Who is Happy? O

ne day, a Crow saw a Swan and thought, “Wow! The Swan is so white and beautiful. I am so black and ugly. I think Swan is the happiest bird in the world.”

The Crow went to the Swan and asked, “Are you the happiest bird in the world, aren‛t you?” “Oh! No, I thought I was the happiest bird until I saw a Parrot. It is so colourful,” replied the Swan.

The Crow went to the Parrot and asked, “Are you the happiest bird in the world?” The Parrot said, “It‛s not true. I thought the same until I saw a beautiful Peacock. It has a colourful neck and long feathers. I am sure Peacock is the happiest bird in the world.” 08 BFM JR JULY_Kala.indd 8

“I will go and meet the Peacock,” thought the Crow. The next day, the Crow went in search of Peacock. Finally, the Crow found the Peacock in a zoo. Many people were gathered around him and were admiring its beauty. The Crow waited until evening. After the people left, the Crow went to the Peacock and asked, “Are you the happiest bird in the world?” The Peacock said, “No my friend. I thought I was the most beautiful and the happiest bird in the world. I have

been observing all the animals in the zoo for some time. The Crow is the only bird that is not kept in a cage. So you are the happiest bird in the world." “I wish I were a Crow,” said the Peacock sadly. The Crow thought, “Oh! I was so wrong. I should not compare myself with others. Everybody is unique and special in some way. I am the happiest bird in the world.” The Crow flew away happily.

I am so lucky. I am the happiest bird in the world. June July 2016

AMAZING ANIMALS

Let‛s know some interesting things about tigers before you run.

GRRR! IT’S A

TIGER!

Run! …Oh! Wait!

Tigers are the largest wild cats living in the world. They eat other animals and hunt for food alone at night! Tigers are good swimmers and cool themselves off in ponds and rivers. Every year ‘International Tiger Day‛ is celebrated on July 29 to raise awareness to protect tigers. Tiger is our country‛s national animal too.

Jim Corbett National Park is the first and oldest tiger reserve in India. It was started in the year 1936 in Uttarakhand state to protect and save tigers. It is also famous for its tiger safari.

SKILLS

MOTOR DEVELOPMENT

SKILLS FOR PRE-SCHOOL / KINDERGARTEN

Help your child master finemotor skills and allow him / her greater independence. Hand-eye coordination develops fine motor skills, learning and creative expression and lays foundation for academic learning in later years. Here are some fun activities to develop motor skills in play-way methods.

Kiddy Bank and Money Box

Egg Carton and the Beans Number concept can be re-inforced, writing a number inside each hole and the child has to add correct number of beans into it. Have your child hold a few beans in his or her hand and place them into the carton one by one by moving a single bean up to the finger tips each time. Note:Be aware of the choking hazard with the little ones.

Regular kiddy bank or recycled money box can be used, encourage the child to hold 2 or 3 coins in the hand and push them through one at a time without dropping the others. 12 BFM JR JULY_Kala.indd 12

July 2016

06/07/2016 01:38:18 PM

Play Dough (Clay)

Give freedom to the children to squash, squeeze, roll, pound the clay and make anything they like. This will get their hand muscles moving.

Tripod Finger Activities The thumb, index finger and middle fingers are used to control pencil when writing. Show your child how to isolate the tripod fingers with a small slip of paper under the ring and little fingers. This develops stability to the joints and muscles of the hands while the tripod fingers are moving, and reduces fatigue during writing.

Tripod Coloring

Finger Ball Walk Children can do this activity using tripod fingers until they get the hang of walking the ball up and down their legs, look that the child makes grabbing movement instead of walking movement with their fingers. Once they get the hang of it they will be able to isolate the tripod fingers. You can change the size and type of ball.

For this activity use a crayon, but use in an undemanding way, use the tripod fingers to hold crayon down flat and rub color all over the large area, eg. in a circle drawn on a paper.

Mini Paper Crumpling

Tearing Paper

Cut small pieces of crepe or tissue paper, give your child one piece at a time to squish a bit using the tripod fingers of both hands, then ask the child to use just the tripod fingers and roll the crumple paper into a small ball.

Tearing paper can be fun to the child and at the same time develops motor skills. Make them tear the strips horizontally or vertically, then ask them to tear the strips into smaller squares by using tripod fingers to grasp the paper. Then these square papers can be used to make collage, which is a great pre-school hand exercise.

Note: Teachers & Parents can help the child develop motor through these activities

STORY 1

The Flying

Elephant

A sugarcane farmer once lived in a small village. He worked very hard in his fields and hoped to have a big harvest.

One morning, he saw that a big chunk of his crop was missing. The next day, another huge chunk of his crop was gone. “I‛ll stay awake tonight and see who‛s eating my sugarcane,” the farmer thought to himself.

3

2

That night, he waited by the window, watching his fields. As the moon rose, he saw a tiny speck grow larger in the sky. It was an elephant flying right into his field!

4 The farmer watched in amazement as it flew down and started eating his sugarcane.

He tiptoed outside and waited for the elephant to finish eating.

When the elephant began flying away, the farmer grabbed its tail in order to catch the elephant. Soon he was flying above his fields into Indra‛s kingdom of Paradise.

Paradise was filled with beautiful birds and flowers. The ground was covered with silver grass and precious stones.

The farmer soon found the royal palace and met Indra. “Your elephant has been flying down and eating all my sugarcane. My harvest is ruined,” said the farmer.

9

“I am very sorry. Please take whatever you want from my kingdom. I‛ll make sure he doesn‛t go down again and damage your crops,” said Indra and blessed the man with a safe journey back home.

PLAY ZONE

A PERFECT PLAY

“Mom! See what I have made. This is an elephant. It‛s so colourful.” Do these words sound familiar, don‛t they? Every child loves to play with play dough. The child finds it interesting and fun. It helps shape his imagination. This play certainly gives a good work to the small hands. The uniqueness of playing with play dough is that there nothing really right or wrong: it is just about exploration, discovery, sensory, creativity and of course play.

What are the benefits? • A child learns visualization and interpretation skills. • It develops self –expression in a child. • It enhances hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. • It helps develop concentration skills. • It helps child to know that there is always more than one option. A Joyful Ride

D

id you go for a ride on a roller coaster, d didn‛t d ‛ you? Well, the biggest and widest roller coaster in India is at Mumbai. This is a steel floorless roller coaster and is known as ‘Nitro‛. It is a part of Adlabs Imagica amusement park in Khopoli, Mumbai. This was designed by Bolliger & Mabillard. It was opened to public in October 2013. Nitro is a unique roller coaster as there is no floor on its trains. Make sure you go for a ride on this big roller coaster in your next vacation.

• The first Roller Coaster is thought to have been built in Russia in 1800‛s and the frames were made in wood. • LaMarcus Thompson designed the first official roller coaster in America in 1878. • The oldest operating roller coaster is Leap the Dips. It is located at Lakemont Park in Pennsylvania and was built in 1902.

Do you like a roller coaster ride? Why?

STORY Whoa! You look so beautiful.

The Butterfly

Story so far........ One day, a little boy, Rohan sees a cocoon in the garden. Rohan eagerly waits for the butterfly to come out of the cocoon. At last, one day the cocoon cracks a little. Rohan tries to help the butterfly by making the crack little bigger using scissors. Finally, the butterfly comes out of the cocoon, but doesn‛t fly. Read on to know what happpened.... Something is seriously wrong. I will go and call father. Come on! Little Butterfly! Why don‛t you fly?

Yes, Rohan, why are you shouting?

Rohan ran to his home.

Father! Father!

Father! Come with me to the garden.

Rohan and his father went to the garden. The butterfly was still struggling to fly……

Oh! Rohan! You should not have cut the cocoon.

I cut the cocoon to help the butterfly come out. Always remember Rohan. If you do not undergo any struggle you can‛t be successful.

The butterfly‛s efforts to come out of its cocoon will prepare its body and wings to fly.

This butterfly has emerged easily. That‛s why it is not able to fly.

MENTOR SPEAKS Are we unknowingly harming our

CHILDREN

by the way we communicate with them?

Ms. Swati Popat Vats Avoid using unnecessary questions “Are you going to eat your food or not?” in which there is no choice, children get confused and they feel frustrated. When you ask, “Do you want to listen to a story?” and children may say ‘No‛ but the teacher still continues with the story, this irritates children and they feel let down. Avoid sarcasm When a child breaks a toy, we get irritated and say, ‘Yes, break them all‛, and he dutifully proceeds to do so and to his utter consternation finds that you are angrier!

38 BFM JR JULY_Kala.indd 34

July 2016

Give requests and directions positively, start a sentence with a positive and not a negative ‘Walk slowly‛ would be a better way of instructing, instead of saying,‛ Don‛t run‛. Similarly, instead of saying, ‘Don‛t sit there‛, it is better to say, ‘Let‛s sit here as you may get hurt on that stool‛. It is important to give instructions to children that also explain the reason why you do not want them to do a particular thing or act. Just telling them not to do it, is not enough. Avoid repeating your instructions Repetition is good for children, but it should not be boring or it becomes drill and then children tend to switch off and ignore the message. When you tend to repeat yourself too much then it also teaches children that you

It is important for adults to learn how to communicate with children. Because children know 100 ways of communicating with you, but sadly we know only one- talking. Raised eyebrows, smiling, hugging, biting your lips, aren‛t these forms of communication? Remember, communication happens on two levels, one with words and the other with body language.

are not serious the first time and they will learn to listen to you only after you have repeated the instruction a couple of times. Eye contact is very important for good listening and once you have their attention, give your instruction to the point. If you feel you want to repeat then questioning would be a better way to repeat. Do not talk too loudly I believe that inside us is an angel and a devil. The angel talks very softly and the devil shouts. So if the child is surrounded with adults who talk loudly and shout all the time then the child learns to listen to loud voices and hence he will always listen to the

inner devil. But if we surround the child with soft voices, soothing calm voices, then he will hear the voice of the angel and it will guide him to make the right decisions. • At age one follow one step directionscome here, sit here, etc • At age two follow two step directionslike bring the ball and come here, sit here and play, etc • At age three it‛s time for three step directions - go to the table, pick up the spoon and bring it here. • At age four, follow 4 step directions and by age 5 and forever at least 5 step directions.

Communication with your child will help your child develop confidence and self esteem, so invest your time and focus on correct communication styles to suit your child.
