We urge you to guide your children while reading the magazine as there are terms they might not recognize. There shouldn’t be any difficulty going through the pages as we have curated the edition keeping the children’s age group in mind. The magazine comes with a ‘word finder’ for terms that are not yet in children’s memory. We have also incorporated a ‘Did you know?’ section, for children to take interest in the topics! We hope you find the magazine interesting! Keep reading. August 22

POEM Adam lived near the sea,

He wanted to be legendary

He allowed little Adam to go When she, his mother, said a firm no

So he ran to the ocean one day And decided to go far away

They feared many a dreadful thing And waited for what fate had to bring!

He wanted to travel beyond his land And see the world as he had planned

But when they gave up and started to mourn They heard a great man return

One day his father learnt about it, And granted him the permit,

The ran to the port to look at him, It was Adam who fulfilled his dream!

He saw a zeal in his son And patiently waited for Adam to return

He was too precious for his mom and dad Adam made them very proud and glad!

Several days passed by And his wife only wondered why? We should always pursue our dreams

World Lion Day is observed every year

across the globe. There are less than 5O,OOO lions in the world right now. The first World Lion Day came into being in 2013. It was headed by Dereck and Beverly Joubert, a couple who were passionate about the preservation of these wild cats. The couple launched the Big Cat Initiative (B.C.I) in partnership with “National Geographic” for protecting the lions across the globe. This day is celebrated to create awareness about the decreasing Lion population in the world and helping them live in their natural habitats, without any fear, protecting them from danger! So, let’s all go ahead and do our best in protecting these glorious animals.

on August 1O to raise awareness about the conservation of lions. Scientifically known as ‘Panthero Leo,’ lions are referred to as the ‘Kings of the Jungle.’ The lion is an endangered species on the IUCN Red List. India has the largest population of lions in the world. The 5 biggest cats which are found mostly in India include The Asiatic Lion, The Royal Bengal Tiger, The Indian Leopard, The Clouded Leopard and The Snow Leopard. Lions are mostly loved by children, thanks to iconic characters like Simba from “The Lion King.” Poaching and hunting has resulted in decreasing lion populations

Red Colobus monkeys are a species of old-world

monkeys found around the eastern, western, and central parts of Africa. Colobus monkeys are chillers; they hang in the forest canopy, dreaming the day away. There’s nothing frenzied or fast about them. Red Colobus monkeys are one of the most threatened species of primates in all of Africa, due to the destruction of forests; it could be assumed that there are not many of them left in the wild. These monkeys inhabit mangrove swamps, scrubby shrub lands, moist forests and farmlands. Red Colobus monkeys usually live in groups consisting of four adult males and many adult females.

among each other? She told Asha to cut the walls out of cardboards, Lata to make the roof of the doll house, Seema to paint the walls while she created the interiors. They were too excited to make the doll house and completed it within a few hours! She set up all the dolls inside the doll house, and all played together for hours!

was a little girl who always wanted to build a doll house. She dreamt of a little doll house in the corner of her bedroom ever since she was a toddler. She made a list of all the things that she would require. She started on the journey of gathering all the raw materials. But after many days she was extremely tired and was able to finish only a small per cent of the work. Disheartened she gave up. The next day, all of Leelas friends came to play with her when she had an idea. What if she divided the work equally

We can accomplish much more if we work together.

STORY A

rich girl named Seeta lived in a small town called Ambikapur. Due to a great emergency, Seeta had to visit her mother in a distant town. In a large pot, Seeta put all her jewellery and filled the other half of the pot with olives and sent it to her friend Indira. Seeta didn’t tell Indira about the enormous wealth in the pot. She just told Indira to keep the pot safely as it was delicate and precious. On returning to Ambikapur after two years, Seeta immediately went to Indira’s house to fetch her pot. But on opening the pot, Seeta saw all her jewellery was gone! Infuriated, Seeta went to the court and accused indira of stealing her gold.

After an hour, the king ruled that Indira had indeed stolen Seeta’s gold! The ministers enquired how the king was so sure, the king said, “Seeta told me she had filled half the pot with her jewellery and the other half with olives at the time she left the pot with Indira, two years back! But when we opened the pot today, the olives were still raw! If Indira didn’t open the pot, the olives would have perished by now! Isn’t it simple?”

PICTURE

STORY A Tourist visited Ladakh for a trip. This is a conversation between the tourist and his local driver named Jigmet.

Tourist: What do you plan on doing after the tourist season has ended? How will you earn money? Jigmet: I plan on going to Siachen. There I will join the army as a loader.

Tourist: You mean you’ll join the army as a Jawan? Jigmet: No. This is a contract job. I cannot join the army as I’m already past the age limit.

Tourist: How will you go there? Jigmet: First, I will travel 265kms to Siachen Base camp, where my medical check-up will be done to see if I am fit enough. Then if I pass, the army will issue uniforms, shoes, warm clothing, helmet, etc. After that, we’ll climb mountains for 15 days to reach Siachen as there is no motorable road. We’ll work there for 3 months. August 22

14

Tourist: What work will you do? Jigmet: I’ll work as a loader. I’ll carry the supplies airdropped in Siachen for the soldiers, from one chowki to another, on my back.

Tourist: Why doesn’t the army use any animals or vehicles for transporting? Jigmet: Siachen is a glacier, so usual vehicles will not work there and ice scooters make a lot of noise which attracts enemy attention and that can be dangerous. Animals cannot survive the cold as we are at an altitude of 18875 ft with -5O degrees C in winter. We go out quietly at night around 2 am and pick up loads and bring them back to the barracks. Tourist: Aren’t you scared of getting hurt? Jigmet: We get paid 18OOO rupees per month. Since all expenses are taken care of, we can save upto 5OOO rupees in these three months. I need the money for my family, especially my daughter’s education.

Jigmet: Many of my friends have died by falling into the vast crevasses, or due to frostbite. Some have even been shot down by enemy bullets. But it is all worth it because I get to serve the army and my country, which is the best reward of all. It makes me feel proud to be an Indian. 15

POEM Taqwa Fatima

The tiny ant looked in the mirror one day,

And thought: “Why did I have to be this way?” “Why am I so meager, so small? Why couldn’t I be an elephant, big, mighty and tall?” I carry rice, sugar and grains to eat… While the elephant plucks fruits standing on his mighty big feet! As she was complaining and crying about her misery, A big blue elephant listened to her story. “You know, little ant,” said the big blue elephant, “Behind every creation of God, a purpose is meant!” “I don’t have to carry around grains its true, But there are so many things I can’t pursue! An ant can carry 5O times its own body weight, And this is something written in their fate! “I didn’t think about it” said the teensy little ant, Let’s not focus on what we can’t!”
