LOCAL HISTORY

A MARVELOUS BEGINNING For more than 100 years, Branson has attracted visitors to the Ozarks, lured by natural beauty and outdoor recreation activities. The first family attraction to draw visitors was Marvel Cave (beneath the property where Silver Dollar City theme park is currently located). First called Marble Cave because its limestone walls were thought to be marble, the cave was described by geologists in the 1860s and explored in the 1880s by adventurers who lowered themselves on ropes 200 feet into the main chamber. Scientific American magazine described the cave in 1885, and word of the natural wonder spread throughout the continent. Canadian mining expert William Henry Lynch read of the cave, purchased it sight unseen, traveled to the Ozarks and, with his two daughters, opened the cave for public tours in 1894.

1950 - 1969 TV SHOWS & HYDROELECTRIC POWER The area first gained national prominence in

the entertainment industry in 1954 when Red Foley, a legendary country singer with 38 top 10 hits, moved to Springfield, Missouri, from Nashville, Tennessee to host “Ozark Jubilee,” one of the first successful network television shows. In 1959, the area was changed forever with the completion of Table Rock Dam. This brought much needed power to the area, spurring the growth of many area businesses. Construction of a dam created Table Rock Lake, nationally renowned for bass fishing and water sports. In addition, the cold water from the bottom of Table Rock Lake that was now flowing into Lake Taneycomo changed it into one of the country’s most popular trout fly-fishing lakes.

FIRST FAMILIES OF ENTERTAINMENT BALDKNOBBERS JAMBOREE In 1959, Mabe brothers Bob, Bill, Lyle, and Jim began performing twice a week in a converted roller skating rink on the Lake Taneycomo waterfront in downtown Branson. The brothers combined popular country tunes with Ozark

Mountain music and threw in a dash of comedy to entertain audiences. In 1969, the Baldknobbers, as the brothers called themselves, built a theater on Highway 76, making their act the longest continuously running show. SILVER DOLLAR CITY In 1960, the long-term plans of Hugo and Mary Herschend came to fruition with the opening of a small, old-time Ozarks village attraction atop the long-popular Marvel Cave, about 10 miles west of Branson on Highway 76. They called it Silver Dollar City, and it offered an 1880s steam train ride, demonstrating craftsmen, themed shops and music. The first year, it drew 125,000 people. Following Hugo’s death, Mary and her sons Jack and Peter continued to direct the growth of the family business, and by 1963, Silver Dollar City was Missouri’s top tourist attraction. In 1967, Silver Dollar City received national exposure

when the popular “Beverly Hillbillies” television show filmed five episodes at the park. PRESLEYS’ COUNTRY JUBILEE In 1963, the Presley family began a music show at The Underground Theater near Talking Rocks Cavern in Kimberling City with special guests from “Ozark Jubilee,” including Red Foley. They made history in 1967 when they built the first music theater on Highway 76. Today, Presleys’ Country Jubilee stars three generations of Presley family members including two original members of the show: Together with other cast members, they perform a variety of musical styles on a wide range of instruments, and a much loved array of comedy skits.

In Branson, the Spotlight Shines Brightest when Students Take the Stage.

On your group visit to Branson, students may end up singing for a packed house in a 2,000seat theater or giving a karate demonstration for 100 in a smaller venue. Maybe they’ll spend the afternoon making music at a world-renowned theme park or close out the day by showcasing their dance skills while water and fire (yes, fire!) provide a unique backdrop. The performances and venues may vary, but one thing is constant: Student groups find exciting and memorable experiences waiting for them in Branson.

What You Know

Chances are you’ve heard something about Branson. After all, it’s been a longtime hub of entertainment in the Midwest. Once dubbed “the live music show capital of the entire universe” by the TV news program 60 Minutes, Branson currently is home to more than 40 theaters, a fantastic lineup of live shows and hundreds of performers who call the area home. More than that, Branson offers an immersive experience for young travelers, giving them the opportunity to perform in a variety of settings and to share the very stages the city’s top performers call home. With a long tradition of being gracious with fans and for taking time to encourage young talent – no matter what form it takes – it’s no wonder Branson is becoming one of the top student-travel destinations in the U.S.

What You May Not Know

One of the most surprising things about your group’s time is Branson is how often you’ll be surprised. After all, it’s hard to believe this city of about 11,000 residents has the capacity to welcome millions of visitors each year and the variety to keep them coming back. Known far and wide for its lineup of live music shows, Branson also has performances focusing on magic, acrobatics, comedy and the skills of furry and feathered friends. As for the music, don’t bring any preconceived notions with you. Sure, you’ll find country, bluegrass and gospel, but those genres are just part of a delightful mix that includes pop, R&B, rock and current radio (or Pandora for the younger generation) hits.

Finally, be prepared to be surprised (pleasantly) to learn a trip to Branson doesn’t have to break the budget. Perhaps that’s one of the reasons the travel experts at Trivago ranked Branson as the Best Value City in the U.S. in 2016.

Down Time is Fun Time

The Highway 76 Entertainment District has long been the focal point of Branson’s tourism scene and there are a variety of activities and opportunities to explore attractions in the heart of the city. Student travelers (and their adult chaperones) enjoy attractions such as the Track Family Fun Parks, where go-kart racing rules and the Branson Ferris Wheel takes visitors to new heights. Highway 76 leads to one of Branson’s most popular attractions, Silver Dollar City, the 1880s theme park where craftspeople demonstrate a variety of skills and welcome student-led performances. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg … literally. One of the most recognized sights on Highway 76 is the Titanic Museum Attraction, a replica of the ill-fated ship that, you guessed it, has an iceberg among its features. The museum is a popular venue for student-group performances and activities. Of course, live shows also offer excellent entertainment for student groups. Whether it’s the stirring tunes of AYO featuring Voices of Glory, the amazing vocal skills of SIX, the showmanship of Billy Dean or other productions, Branson shows delight audiences of all ages. Additionally, your group’s down time in Branson offers the chance to shop at some of the country’s top retail outlets, take a nature hike on one of the area’s many trails, enjoy thrilling zipline rides and to fish one of three beautiful lakes. Perhaps best of all, Branson has dining and lodging options to appeal to a variety of tastes and budgets, which means you’re never far from a fantastic meal and a good night’s sleep. Clearly, Branson has many options for your group to consider, but don’t get overwhelmed. The Branson Convention and Visitors Bureau is eager to assist. Whether you want someone to coordinate a site visit, find volunteers for an event or give your group a shout-out on social media, the CVB team has you covered. So, start making your plans to visit Branson today. You’ll probably want an encore.
