College of the Ozarks to dedicate memorial to honor the patriots of the global war on terror On Nov. 7, College of the Ozarks will dedicate the newest addition to Patriots Park, a memorial to honor the patriots of the global war on terror. “College of the Ozarks is honored to pay tribute to those who have defended, and continue to defend people from all walks of life who are threatened by the evil ideology of terrorism,” said Marci Linson, vice president for patriotic activities and dean of admissions at

College of the Ozarks. Bryan Cizek, director of patriotic activities at the college, has fought in the war on terror and knows its dangers firsthand. He served in the U.S. Army for nearly five years, starting out with the 4th Infantry Division out of Ft. Hood, Texas. Soon after, he joined the Operations Community and served in the 75th Ranger Regiment as an Airborne Ranger Team Leader, conducting multiple tours in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

“We were in the fight of our lives against an enemy whose sole existence threatens our way of life in America,” Cizek said. “We were fighting against radical beliefs. Not a foreign superpower. Not a foreign army. We were fighting an insurgency. We went out night after night looking for those who wish to destroy the very principles our country was founded upon. When those towers fell, our country was fundamentally changed in how we live our lives – that’s terror.” See MEMORIAL on Page 8

Yakov joins Vets for Vets celebration By Brenda Meadows Branson Veterans Task Force

Yakov Smirnoff will be the featured guest at the 2018 Vets for Vets Celebration Show, 2 p.m. Nov. 5 in the Mansion Theatre, 189 Expressway Lane. The celebration, fashioned after a USO-style production, consists of military veteran entertainers or former United Service Organization alumni. The unique line-up of performing veterans drew Yakov, who has entertained veterans and troops stateside and abroad, to perform at Vets for Vets. “I love being in Branson and seeing all the veterans, the active military, and their families,” Smirnoff said. “That’s one of the reasons I choose to bring my show back to Branson during Veterans Homecoming

Week.” International vocalist George Dyer will also join the line up of patriotic performers. “One of my favorite things to do during Homecoming Week is to go to Veterans Village for serving coffee and conversation with the veterans that visit there,” Dyer said. “I love Branson because it is all about showing gratitude to our heroes.” This will be the show’s seventh year in Branson and IMAX Entertainment Complex’s second year as a sponsor. Paul Bluto, Branson’s IMAX Entertainment Complex owner, said sponsoring Vets for Vets again is “our family’s way of saying ‘thank you.’” The “family” includes McFarlain’s,

Florentina’s Ristorante Italiano and Montana Mike’s. Built Right Affordable Homes & Structures, a new Vets for Vets co-sponsor, said its contribution is a way to thank the Branson Veterans Task Force. “The Branson Veterans Task Force is a tremendous asset to our veterans and our community,” said Built Right Sales Manager Tom Christian. “Thank you for doing all that you do.” Familiar faces on the Vets for Vets docket include ventriloquist/singer Jim Barber, Barbara Fairchild with Roy Morris, Brandon and Megan Mabe of the Baldknobbers, The Bretts, Gordy and Debbie, The Sonshine Dancers, with Vietnam Vet Norvin Breek, Broadway performer Peggy Lee Brennan, The Golden Sounds of the Plat-

ters with Vietnam veteran Eddie Stovall and more. “Only in America would this be possible,” said Yakov. “That a Russian could become an American, and ‘make America laugh again!’ What a country!” Vets for Vets is a free show for vets and their families. No tickets are issued and seating is

on a first-come basis. It is one of several events that serve to kick off Veterans Homecoming Week, Nov. 5-11. A donation for the Branson Veterans Task Force (a 501c organization) will be accepted. Call 417-337-8387 or email bvtf-mo@hotmail.com or visit bransonveterans.com.

As time goes on, the names of those whose remains have been found and had the cross placed next to their name changed to a star. At least 1,600 men remain unaccounted for in southeast Asia. Overall, there are more than 90,000 still lost or unaccounted for since the end of World War I. If weather permits, an 8 a.m. outdoor service on Nov. 6 at the Welk Resort, 1984 MO-165, will honor and remember those who fought for freedom, and lost their own on foreign soil during times of war. Marine Corps veteran Eddie Beasley will sing hymns and Mick Standley, Army Reserve veteran, will perform taps. The remembrance service will move to the theater in case of inclement weather. There is no charge and the public is invited. For information, call the P.O.W. Network at 417-336-4232.

Old Glory gets steel support By Brenda Meadows Branson Veterans Task Force

For 17 years the Avenue of Freedom on Gretna Road has displayed rows of American Flags that are donated as memorials to heroes. But winds and weather have caused some poles supporting the flags to bend or break. Flags along the avenue, hosted by the Branson Veterans Task Force, has a memorial placard bearing the name of a veteran, first responder or present-day warrior. Many people pondered a way to make this place of honor safe from the elements. Then Vietnam War veteran Steve Weyher, chairman of the Avenue of Freedom Committee, had an idea. Result – problem solved. “The cost of replacing flags and poles was getting out of hand,” he said. “So, after years of replacing poles due to the storms, I knew I needed to strengthen the poles somehow.” Weyher had an idea to put a steel rod into the shaft of the existing pole. He went to Branson Steel where he told steel worker Jessie McKnight his idea. McKnight took the existing poles apart and discovered a hollow insert inside them. The insert was taken out and replaced with a half-inch-thick steel rod. He then made 100 steel rods, each six feet long, and inserted them into the existing poles. “I sure want to thank the Branson Steel staff for their support on this project and other projects they have helped us with in the past,” Weyher said. “The task force and many volunteers have been making sure the flags fly without incident and all placards remain in place, as well as two weather-resistant flags flying from each light pole in the center of Gretna.” Donations from individuals, organizations and businesses are responsible for the flags along the 1.5 miles of memorials. As each flag is “retired,” it is shipped to a recipient the donor specifies – complete with a personalized certificate. Weyher and retired project Chairman

The Branson Bugle

Tom Goldsworthy receive letters and calls from people that come to Branson to look for “their” flags. “The person who orders the flag is not always the person that gets the flag,” Goldsworthy said. “Some dedicate them for relatives that served and some to honor friends that served.” SuddenLink and employee Randy Brott supply the lift truck needed to place flags on the poles. Many volunteers are committed to keeping the avenue maintained on poles that are the property of Empire Electric, Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 913 and the city of Branson. To sponsor a flag, call 417-337-8387 or email bvtf-mo@hotmail.com.

MEMORIAL from page 1

The dedication of the memorial reflects the patriotic goal of the college. “This isn’t just an honor; it is a responsibility,” Linson said. “Our patriotic goal is to help students develop their understanding of American heritage, love of country, and willingness to defend it. Honoring the servicemen and women of the global war on terror is a patriotic duty. It not only shows much-deserved appreciation to these heroes but also teaches our students about their valor and sacrifice.” Patriots Park, located at the entrance of the College of the Ozarks campus, is home to several memorials that highlight the bravery of the country’s service men and women – The Missouri Vietnam Veterans Memorial, The Missouri Gold Star Families Memorial, and The Korean War Memorial. Patriots Park also includes Veterans Grove, which consists of nearly 150 sugar maple trees that honor veterans who have traveled with the college as part of the Patriotic Education Travel Program. The park is open daily, from sunrise to 10 p.m.

Those who served during the Korean War will gather on Nov. 8 in the Dayroom to be honored.

They will have a group photo taken at 1:30 p.m. More than a dozen WWII vets attended the first dayroom celebration in 2016. There were 22 honored during the 2017 Dayroom recognition. “This will be Veterans Village’s third year to have a day that focuses on WWII veterans,” said Chairperson Brenda Meadows. “They deserve our respect and gratitude.” Some of the veterans come in wheelchairs or with walkers. But, it doesn’t dampen their spirits, keep them from

sharing their stories or joining the live music sing-alongs. They also bring their spouses, friends and family members. And some return alone. “This past year a lady showed me the photo I took of her husband in 2016,” Meadows said. “She had on a vest and asked me to read the back of it. There was that picture of him, with a appliqué that read, ‘Widow of a WWII Vet.’ It touched my heart that she returned to our event alone. She said she feels at home there.” It is the second year for the Dayroom to dedicate a day to Korean War veterans. Veterans Village hosts its Dayroom, Vendor Village and Mess Hall, Nov. 5-10. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the exception of Saturday when hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call 417-337-8387 or email bvtf-mo@hotmail.com.

Retired U.S. Air Force Maj. Stephen Long, 74, of Las Vegas, died Aug. 10 from complications arising from Parkinson’s Disease. Local residents may remember him from frequent appearances on Tony Orlando’s show. Long was born Feb. 16, 1944, in Hastings, Nebraska. He is survived by his wife of 45 years Katherine; son, Shannon Long; daughter, Katie Long Silvia; and several grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nina Barnhart and Daniel Long; and stepfather, Hank Barnhart. Steve graduated from Willamette University in 1966 and entered the U.S. Air Force March 13, 1967. Long trained as a fighter pilot, was selected for O-2 Forward Air Controller operations and was sent to Thailand

in November 1968. Steve was shot down by enemy fire Feb. 28, 1969 over the Ho Chi Minh Trail inside Laos. He spent 1,490 days in captivity as a prisoner of war. After repatriation, he was lucky enough to fly the fighters of his dreams, the F-4, F-105, and F-16 Falcon. He retired from the Air Force in 1987. He became an instructor in Nevada’s classified F-117 Stealth program from 1987 to 1992. In 2000, he became the Deputy Director for Veteran’s Affairs for the State of Nevada and oversaw the construction of the Nevada State Veterans Home in Boulder City. Long had a quick wit and enjoyed fishing, hiking, hunting, and spending time with family and friends. Long loved flying and had flown fighters as recently as 2008. The family cannot thank all the kindness and compassion he received at the Nevada State Veteran’s Home in Boulder City enough.

Honoring veterans in Branson By Sarah Hord, Dee Elledge, Kathy & David McAllister, Becky Jewsbury and with Mary Schantag and the P.O.W. Network

A variety of events are planned for veterans and their families throughout Veterans Homecoming Week. Shindigs’ Welcome Home Celebration The third annual Welcome Home Celebration will be 3-5 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Jim Stafford Theatre, 3440 76 Country Boulevard. Stop by and enjoy the music of local entertainers. No reservations required. Contact Sarah Hord at 417-335-4668 or Sarah@OzarksKirkwood. com.

Medics, Nurses and Combat Vets Reunion There will be a reunion for Medic, Nurses, Combat Veterans and Evac Hospital Doctors from 2-4 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Westgate Resort, 2201 Roark Valley Road. Reunions are the act of people getting together again after being apart. Among veterans, this usually results in your brothers and sisters welcoming you with open arms and sharing stories that can cause tears, but can also heal hidden wounds and fears. When combat veterans come together for their reunions there are always stories about the courageous medics and nurses that

save their lives and the lives of their buddies. Too often the names are never known on either side, but the appreciation and bonds endure. The keynote speaker will be Tommy Clack, a triple amputee from Vietnam War. Contact either Sarah at 417-335-4668 or Sarah@ OzarksKirkwood.com or Becky at Westgate Resort at 417-332-3557 or becky_jewsbury@wgresorts.com. Sandbox Party The Sandbox Party will be 8:30-10 a.m. Nov. 7 at Mel’s Hard Luck Diner. No need to bring your shovels and buckets to this Sandbox Party. All you need to bring is yourself, a buddy and your appetites! Once again Mel’s Hard Luck Diner in the Grand Village is providing free breakfast for all veterans that have served in the “Sandbox.” Call Sarah at 417-335-4668. See VETERANS on Page 23

WWII Reunion In salute to the Greatest Generation, a World War II reunion is 1-2:30 p.m. Nov. 5 at Jim Stafford’s Theatre. It took “All Hands On Deck” to unite Americans during WWII. There were many sacrifices: ration books for food, drives to collect scrap metal, paper, and rags,

and encouragement to purchase war bonds to help “Bring him home sooner.” Now that they are home, come and enjoy free coffee, cobbler and entertainment. No reservations required. Contact Sarah Hord at 417-335-4668 or Sarah@OzarksKirkwood.com.

Thank you, from Dee Elledge and Sarah GreenHord, to all the businesses, friends and veterans that have donated, supported and attended the events we co-hosted with the P.O.W. Network last year. Homefront Heroes/Spouses luncheon Holding down the Homefront while loved ones served our country has taken a toll on military families. Homefront Heroes will be honored from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 9 at the Shoppes at Branson Meadows. For those serving, knowing that someone was waiting for them to come home was always a comfort. The question is “Who comforts the one who is trying to get the kids to their school plays, and call the repairman every time something breaks?” The spouses, of course!

We want to say, “Thank you” to those of you who held down the homefront and those of you who continue to support your veterans now. Join our sponsor, Veterans Coffee Company, for a lunch and entertainment. RSVP by calling Sarah 417-335-4668 or Dee at 870-4213511.
