Peace in Patriotism L

By Chelsea Johnson Senior criminal justice major

ast March, I had the pleasure of returning to Vietnam with 12 unspoken heroes from the Vietnam War. As a participant in the Patriotic Education Travel Program, my life was impacted in three major ways. First, I was impacted as an American. It is a privilege and honor to recognize the acts of service of those who fought in Vietnam. I believe any serviceman or servicewoman who has sacrificed their own freedom to make our nation great deserves that recognition. Second, I was impacted as a student. For the trip, I was originally paired with Col. John Clark, U.S. Air Force. He was shot down on March 12, 1967, in western Bien Hoa Province in North Vietnam. See PATRIOTISM on Page 8 Chelsea Johnson walks with Capt. Frank Swygert.

Clark then spent six years as a Prisoner of War and was released in February of 1973. I received word 48 hours before we were scheduled to leave for Vietnam that Col. Clark would not be going with us. This broke my heart as much as it broke Col. Clark to give the unfortunate news. This was supposed to be his redemption trip, and I was afraid of leaving this country without him. I met Capt. Frank Swygert, U. S. Army, in the San Francisco airport. Swygert served as a part of a Military Assistant Advisory Group, also known as M.A.A.G., in 1962. He was one of the first Americans in Vietnam, arriving there before the combat soldiers. Both of these Veterans take my breath away. Today, tomorrow, and forever they will occupy space in my heart. I was impacted most on the trip as a

daughter and sister. When I was 14 years old, I lost my father to cancer. I told my mother that I would make a miracle out of our mess, so I finished high school and came to college. I truly thought that I had seen the end of tragedy. I was wrong. On Sept. 28, 2016, six months before our scheduled trip to Vietnam, my brother was killed. I was not even sure if I would be able to go to Vietnam. I remember sitting in our dean of students office the next day, crying out to him, “I just want to be okay for my Vietnam veterans. I have to be okay.” Many ask me how I got over my tragic loss. They wonder how I could step foot on foreign soil and have Vietnam veterans call me “Sparkle,” as if it was the name my mother gave me. I look around me at the faculty and staff of my college, and I proudly tell people, “It is because I am surrounded by excellence.” For some, College of the Ozarks provided a trip of a lifetime, but for me College of the Ozarks changed the course of my life.

In the 1970s, many students wore Prisoner of War and Missing in Action bracelets bearing the name of a captured or lost soldier. This was a way for families to remember soldiers in their hearts and minds. Col. John Clark’s name, rank and date of capture are inscribed on the bracelet that he received after being released and returned home in the 1970s during Operation Homecoming. He gave the bracelet to Chelsea on June 27.

Veteran empowered care: Building resilience through applied military strength By Julie Peters Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce

Branson Veterans Task Force is hosting a morning event for combat warriors, both veterans and active duty personnel, to learn about tools to manage the challenges of post-traumatic stress. U.S. Army Retired Col. Jill Chambers, CEO of This Able Vet, LLC, is recognized as the

first person in the U.S. military to develop a successful, sustainable strategy designed to reduce the crippling stigma associated with mental health challenges in a warrior culture, breaking through the barriers of silence on this issue. Having successfully recov-

ered from her own post-traumatic stress following attacks on the Pentagon on 9-11, she has developed new strategies for increasing and ensuring resiliency for those who face combat-related adversity. The focus is on learning non-pharmaceutical and innovative self-care options that allow one to take responsibility for one’s own journey to

wellness. While this is one of life’s serious issues, Jill’s kindness of spirit and passion for her work will lift your spirits and help you develop a can-do attitude about your own journey. Whether you are a veteran yourself, or someone who loves and supports a combat veteran, join us in the Starlite Theatre

VIP Room on Nov. 9 at 10 a.m. to learn about Veteran Empowered Care — Building Resilience through Applied Military Strength. For information, or to note that you are interested in attending, call Julie at 417-243-2117. Your call noting your interest will help us plan for adequate seating.

According to Navy Rear Adm. Samuel J. Cox, “Heroes is a real credit to the U.S. Navy and Naval Aviation.” The 2015 GI Film Festival Founders Choice Award Winner, “The Unimaginable Journey of Peter Ertel” will capture the hearts of many. It is a remarkable life story about an honorable man who maintained his uncommon humanity despite being trapped in a universe of hatred, destruction and death. It is also a story of the sometimes-miraculous pull of the tides of fate and the true meaning of love. “Brothers In War” is a gripping first-per-

son accounts and digitally remastered archival footage, including the soldiers’ own home movies and personal audio tapes. Brothers in War recounts the harrowing combat experiences of the men of Charlie Company — one of the last American combat infantry companies to be drafted, trained and sent to fight together in Vietnam. “Lost and Found: The Legacy of the USS Lagarto.” In 1944, the submarine USS Lagarto left a small shipyard in Manitowoc, Wisconsin and traveled 8,000 miles to serve in the war in the Pacific. While on patrol, the sub vanished after engaging a Japanese convoy in a ferocious sea battle. For 60 years nothing further was known; families were simply told ‘Lagarto overdue from patrol, presumed lost.’ In 2005 a British diver stumbled upon the re-

mains of Lagarto and her crew of 86 at the bottom of the Gulf of Thailand. For more information contact Tom Forster, V.P. of Marketing, Branson’s IMAX Entertainment Complex, 417-335-3533 ext. 135, tom@bransonimax.com or James Wilhite at bransonfilmfestival@ gmail.com.
