In June 2019, College of the Ozarks sent 20 students to Europe as part of the Patriotic Education Travel Program for the 75th anniversary of the Normandy invasion. Bryan Cizek, director of patriotic activities, oversaw the planning and implementation of the trip, which marked the College’s 11th tour to Europe and the 24th Patriotic Education Travel Program in total. Previous tours took students to the battlefields of World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War. “This trip truly enriched my understanding of sacrifice,” said Emily Braden, se-
nior business administration and public relations double major. “These men were often younger than we are now, and they bravely served on foreign soil for people they would never meet. They understood how important freedom is, so they willingly sacrificed their own. It is now our duty to keep that sacrifice alive.” While abroad, students had the opportunity to see Westminster Abbey and the Churchill War Rooms in London, England. In the Normandy region of France, students visited Pointe du Hoc and attended an event commemorating the 75th anniversary of D-Day. See D-Day on Page 8
Rally to support Congressional Gold Medal for Ghost Army WWII unit By Carolyn Spence Cagle Board of Directors, Ghost Army Legacy Project
Not widely known until declassification of their work in the late 1990’s, the Ghost Army played a critical role in securing Allied victory during WWII. The Army used inflatable decoy tanks and artillery, fake radio transmissions, and sound effects to conceal Allied troop movements from the Germans. Like actors in a repertory theatre, the Unit would implement an ever-changing multimedia show tailored to each of their 20 operations in France, Belgium, Germany, and Luxembourg often occurring close to enemy lines. Overall, the 1,100 members of the Ghost Army used creativity and illusion to save thousands of lives and meet war outcomes. An overview of the Unit and their work occurred at the 2014 and 2015 Branson IMAX Military Film Festival during Veterans Homecoming Week. Interest in the film was intense, with attendees occupying two movie theatres to watch the “Ghost Army” film by the documentarist, Rick Beyer. Due to classification of their work, the heroic efforts of Ghost Army veterans went largely unrecognized for 50 years until the late 1990’s. Less than 20 members of the Ghost Army survive to support urgency to acknowledge their bravery and war contributions. To respond to that need, the Ghost Army Legacy Project (www.ghostarmylegacyproject.org) and supporters now advocate for granting of the Congressional Gold Medal to celebrate the meritorious work of the Unit and specifically members of the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops and 3133 Signal Company Special. Supporters of this initiative include the Veterans
and Military Coalition of the Ozarks (includes approximately 32 organizations in Missouri and Arkansas), the American Legion, the national World War II Museum in New Orleans, Wright Museum of WWII, various historical and military organizations, and several state legislatures,

including those in Arizona and Missouri. The recent 75th anniversary of D-Day also offers veterans and their families a timely opportunity to add to others’ support, including that of 28 Representatives and 11 Senators to grant the Gold Medal to the Ghost Army. Further support momentum will occur by veterans and consumers writing their federal legislators and seeking their co-sponsorship of the Gold Medal in their relevant chamber (House of Representatives or Senate). Two 2019 bipartisan-supported bills focus on granting of the Medal: HR 2350 (House of Representatives) and S 1421 (Senate) (each titled “The Ghost Army Congressional Gold Medal Act”). These bills need your representative and senators’ co-sponsorship. That is critical to gain bill co-sponsorship by at least 2/3rd of federal House of Representatives members and 2/3rd of Senate members. These percentages will allow the Medal bills to come to a vote in each chamber to affirm granting of the Gold Medal. A letter to your representative and two senators to seek their co-sponsorship is critical to reach the needed co-sponsorship percentage for each chamber to take action on the Medal. Thank you for your support to honor the “unsung heroes” of the Ghost Army.

D-DAY from page1
“To hear the stories and stand in the presence of the men who survived the hellish assault was absolutely riveting,” said Jordan Sutton, senior criminal justice major, about the servicemen who stormed the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. “No words of mine will ever do justice to the soldiers who wrote history with their deeds. Above all, I am thankful that such men have lived and that I have had the opportunity to hear their stories. They will not be forgotten.” One student in particular, Kortney Cambers, senior public relations major, recounted her personal encounter with a veteran. “I was honored to meet John Santiano,” said Cambers. “He is a 97-year-old WWII veteran who fought on D-Day at Point du Hoc. On June 7, 2019, John was surrounded by many as he told of his experience at Normandy 75 years ago. His
voice quivered; I got chills. He told of the gruesome details that day which caused him to, ‘cry and cry, then cry some more.’ After gaining his strength, John scaled a 100-foot cliff to fight the German soldiers. John fought alongside his brothers, many of whom are not around to share their story. I am now commissioned to spread John’s story and those of all the men who fought on D-Day.” The goal of the Patriotic Education Travel Program has always been an extension of the Patriotic Goal of the College. College of the Ozarks continues to invest in students so that they may have a renewed respect for veterans and an appreciation for their country. Students like Braden, Sutton, and Cambers came back invigorated to share the stories of veterans who endured the harrowing assault on D-Day. The Patriotic Education Travel Program ensures the feats of the Greatest Generation will not fade, but rather live on in the words of the young people who understand the immense debt owed to those warriors who came before them.

Avenue of Freedom is more than a display By Brenda Meadows Branson Veterans Task Force

Many people have inquired about the American flags (Avenue of Freedom) placed on poles in the center divide along Gretna Road. Not only do they create a colorful display, but each flag represents “a hero.” Each represents a veteran, first responder or present-day warrior who is being honored. The flags, hosted by the Branson Veterans Task Force (BVTF) through sponsorship or donations sent by friends, family members, military brothers and sisters of the honoree each flag represents, are an area attraction themselves. And people who have sponsored a flag or are memorialized by a flag, come to Branson to see them as they “wave.” “People that make a donation to have the flags flown actually come (to Branson) and look for those flags,” said Tom Goldsworthy, who was the first chairperson of the project and is now retired. “The person who orders the flag is not always the person that the flag is sent to. Some people buy them for relatives that served and some sponsor them in honor of friends that served.” The Avenue of Freedom is in its 18th year of flying Old Glory along the 1.5 mile stretch of Gretna. When the Task Force receives sponsorships or donations from individuals, schools, organizations or businesses the flags are assigned by number to a pole. It is displayed from the week before Memorial Day (the last weekend in May), until the week after Veterans Day (the third week of November). When each flag is “retired” it is folded and placed into a special flag case then shipped to a designated recipient, complete with a personalized certificate. Members of the BVTF and helpers from around the nation have been making sure the flags on display are monitored. If any one of the flags gets blown from its pole, or hangs loosely by one corner, it is noticed or reported by caring community residents or visitors. “The Task Force and many volunteers have been making sure the flags fly without incident and all placards remain in place,” said Vietnam Veteran Steve Weyher, Avenue of Freedom committee chairman. “People have called us, or the city, to let us know when a flag blew down or one of the supporting poles broke. I am glad to say that doesn’t happen much anymore.” Sudden Link, with employee Randy Brott, supplies the lift truck needed to place Old Glory on the poles. Members of the community are committed to keeping the avenue maintained on poles that are the property of Empire Electric; Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 913; and the City of Branson. “We have some people who drive up and down Gretna looking for the flag they sponsored. We don’t mind helping them locate it. We get calls from people who are visiting Branson, and they just want to thank us. It is a wonderful sight to drive up Gretna and see all of those red, white and blue flags waving courtesy Branson Veterans Task Force in the wind.” Each of the American flags along A form to sponsor a flag can be downloaded at the Avenue of Freedom repbransonveterans.com. Branson Veterans Task Force hosts its 2019 Veterans Village at Ballparks of America in Building 2, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Ballparks of America,1000 Pat Nash Drive, Nov. 5-10. On specified days at the event, WWII and Korean veterans will be recognized and honored in the Day Room and Mess Hall. Those who served during WWII gather on Nov. 6. Korean War veterans will be recognized on Nov. 8. On each of those days, the veterans will be asked to share personal stories in the Day Room. And on their specific days, a group photo of the veterans will be taken at 1:30 p.m. Veterans and their families and volunteers annually attend the Village’s Day Room, Vendor Village and Mess Hall. The Day Room is modeled after a USO canteen with snacks, coffee and live music. Live music, provided by a “Round Robin,” is comprised of veterans or volunteer musicians who take turns leading a song as the musical “circle” rotates after each courtesy of Branson Veterans Task Force number.
