NEW MAN 15 LITRE D38 MAKES ITS DEBUT AT BRISBANE TRUCK SHOW Making its Australian debut at the recent 2015 Brisbane Truck Show, just seven months after its world premiere at the IAA Trade Fair in Hanover, Germany, the MAN TGX-D38 was the centre of attention on the MAN stand. The new Euro 6 TGX-D38 boasts a plethora of new technologies, outstanding performance, a new level of driving dynamics and comfort along with low ownership costs. The new flagship of the MAN fleet, the TGX-D38 is being optimised for Australian conditions to meet the demands of long distance transportation in B-Double and heavy-duty applications. Importantly this model is 36 pallet B-Double compliant. MAN’s focus with the TGX-D38 was to provide a truck offering the highest levels of driving dynamics and performance with low ownership costs. At the heart of the new MAN is a 15.2 litre six cylinder engine that produces 560hp (412 kW) and 1991 ft-lb (2700 Nm) of torque. Its high-pressure common rail fuel system injects fuel into the cylinders at up to 2500 bar, resulting in finer atomisation and lower particulate levels. Other emissions-reducing technologies include a diesel particulate filter, selective catalytic reduction with AdBlue injection, plus a combination of cooled, external

high-pressure exhaust gas recirculation and a CRT closed particulate filter system.
A gradient sensor takes into account the topography when selecting the right gear.
An interesting engine characteristic is the lower RPM torque delivery, from 930 to 1350 rpm. The new engine is one of the lightest in its class, thanks to its aluminium flywheel housing, lightweight compacted graphite iron engine block and cylinder head, plastic sump and rocker cover.
Exterior highlights include the platinum matte finish on the side mirrors and radiator cover, black fascia panel, large chrome D38 lettering on the driver and passenger door and the engine power output (560 hp) on the door badges, that visually convey the power output of the truck.
The new MAN TipMatic TX semiautomatic 12-speed gearbox, features a number of new features. A new clutch actuator system provides comfortable driving at idling speed and allows the driver to manoeuvre the truck with great precision.
Cabin entry steps are concealed within the door cavities for a sleeker profile, and the sizeable exterior mirrors are fitted with aero covers. The door handles are low-set and the grab rail assists with easy entry into the spacious cabin.
Once underway, the truck moves at a low idling speed of around 600 rpm without the need to press the accelerator. If there is insufficient engine torque at idling speed, it shifts down a gear and for safety, the clutch disengages the moment the driver presses the brake pedal. An inclination sensor always finds the right gear for moving off, whether driving uphill with an empty vehicle or with a full load.
The MAN TGX-D38 features a car-like interior with luxury appointments including a four-spoke, tilt and telescopic, multifunction steering wheel; comfortable, adjustable and supportive air suspension driver’s seat, power windows and mirrors, air conditioning and a quality audio system. The D38 is scheduled to go on sale later in 2015 – in the meantime for further information, talk to your MAN sales consultant.

These include factory floors, restaurants, retail stores, showrooms, apartments, and car parks.
Owned by Tony Iannetta and based in Springvale, the company does work all over Victoria including regional cities such as Mildura, Albury and as far afield as Broken Hill. Whilst commercial projects dominate most of the company’s work they also cater for domestic works such as house foundations, slabs, basements, kerb and channel, garages, driveways, interior floors and much more. Concreting runs in the family – Tony’s father Giovanni became a concreter after arriving from Italy in 1963 and around twenty years ago Tony followed his father into the business. Giovanni 04
is still going strong working as a concreter in the business today. Tony believes it is good old hard work, high service levels and attention to detail that has helped the business experience phenomenal growth over the last few years and brought him a steady stream of repeat customers. “I love this business. I enjoy talking with customers, finding out exactly what they want, giving them the right advice and ultimately specifying the right end product,” enthused Tony. Some of Tony’s key customers include New Zealand based Ryman’s

Giga really makes driving a breeze,” added Tony.
Concrete Concepts currently has over 40 staff, providing an experienced team of concreters with a broad range of skills and services. The company backs up its varied services with a full fleet of equipment including trucks, trailers, bobcats and excavators.
“Why would I sell it? It’s been a great truck - it’s been so good to us. It hasn’t cost us a cent. We’ve just repainted it, put a bull bar on it, new alloy rims and now it looks like new again. Looking at the two together it’s hard to tell them apart!” said Tony.
Tony also talks about the excellent customer service he receives from staff at Patterson Cheney Isuzu, Dandenong particularly sales consultant Shane Kelly and Sales Manager Paul Leggerini. “They have literally bent over backwards for me on many occasions to really help me out which I really appreciate,” Tony went on to say.
Tony’s first Isuzu was purchased back in 1998 and given his satisfaction with the brand he now has nine on the fleet including two Giga tippers – one of which is a 2002 model and the other

Concrete Concepts is continuing to grow into new areas including property development of multi level apartments. So the future certainly looks bright with more Isuzus likely to be on the horizon. 05
WESTERN STAR GIVES PAYNE’S LIVESTOCK TRANSPORT A GOOD START IN BUSINESS Nothing beats the feeling of a brand new, shiny Western Star but even more so when you happen to be just 27 years old and realising a long held ambition of starting up your own transport business.
Danny Payne has been driving livestock for most of his short working life and recently took the ambitious step of purchasing a new Western Star 4900 FXT which will be the backbone of his new business venture, Payne’s Livestock Transport. Danny’s family has been involved in the transport business for four generations. After leaving school he undertook a four and a half year diesel mechanic apprenticeship before joining his father’s business, Payne’s Transport, as a driver. Currently subbing for his father transporting mainly cattle and sheep using B-Doubles, Danny hopes to further expand current markets and find new opportunities now he has his own company and truck. “I’ve always had an ambition of running my own business. I love working in the livestock industry – I understand the industry, I know the people involved and they know me. It’s what I know and enjoy. Payne’s Livestock has built up a good reputation over the years and I just want to keep building on that,” Danny said. Danny has long been impressed with Western Stars and more so since the recent reintroduction of the Cummins engine.
“ I’ve always liked Cummins and the new 15 litre600hp ISXe5 engine with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology is a beauty with great power and torque,” Danny explained. 06
The SCR exhaust after treatment on the ISXe5 is a fully integrated system developed by Cummins Emissions Solutions (CES),
dosing urea into the exhaust stream to reduce oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions. As the only diesel engine manufacturer with in-house integration of all critical subsystems from air handling to exhaust after treatment, Cummins is able to optimise the combustion process to maximise fuel economy. Danny dealt with Andrew Pincott of Patterson Cheney whom he reports was extremely helpful throughout the purchase process. “Whilst Andrew was obviously new to the truck industry I was really impressed with him. If he didn’t know the answer to a question he’d go and find it out. I really respected that and he was great to deal with,” he added. A lot of time was spent getting the truck specs just right. The truck has had plenty of additional work done to it including extra stainless, custom toolboxes, a special paint job including sign writing to Danny’s exacting specifications and a heavy duty custom bulbar. Whilst Danny has only owned the Western Star for a short time he loves it. Whilst most of his work is in the Gippsland area, his Western Star is fitted with the 54 inch Stratosphere sleeper as he sees himself doing more and more long haul interstate work in the future – something he really enjoys. “The Stratosphere cab is perfect – it’s really comfortable and roomy. You can stand up and walk around which is great when you’re getting up in the mornings – it’s fantastic.” Danny went on to say. Finance was organised through Paterson Cheney’s in-house finance department, Westar Finance headed by Con Nitsikas. Danny describes Con as doing a ‘fantastic’ job making the whole process stress free whilst securing a competitive rate. With one of the best looking Western Stars on the road and Danny’s drive and determination, Payne’s Livestock Transport looks set for a bright future.

MAN PRIME MOVERS A BIG DRIVER OF OPENICA’S AUSTRALIA WIDE TRANSPORT BUSINESS
•
Custo m er Experiences AFTER SPENDING TIME WORKING AS A DRIVER IN THE SPECIALISED AREA OF CARAVAN AND BOAT TRANSPORT, VLAD TASESKI DECIDED THAT THE TIME WAS RIGHT TO START HIS OWN TRANSPORT BUSINESS IN 2006, COMMENCING OPERATIONS WITH A SINGLE TRUCK. Vlad purchased parts of an existing business he had worked for and set about slowly changing both equipment and personnel to suit his vision of the best quality transport company in Australia. Since then, Openica Logistics has grown to an impressive business with 45 staff, 30 trucks, and three company owned depots in Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. Whilst the company specialises in transporting caravans, motorhomes and boats, it also moves trucks, cars, jet skis, vans, machinery and general freight across the length and breadth of Australia. Openica’s growth and success has been driven by Vlad, who knows there are no short cuts to success in business. Providing outstanding customer service with absolute integrity and honesty are the foundations upon which he has built the company. It is this attitude that has resulted in Openica Logistics building and maintaining long term customer relationships with leading caravan manufacturers Jayco & Jurgens, boat builders Telwater, leading insurers RACV & RACQ along with numerous other well known organisations. In addition, Openica handle jobs for private customers on a daily basis.
The business name Openica is taken from the village in Macedonia where Vlad was born. It is now very much a family affair with his daughter Andriana and son Alex both working in the company that Vlad and his wife Violeta built. In keeping with Vlad’s quality mantra and business growth objectives and in conjunction with Operations Manager Jono Kristeff, Openica has built a MAN focused fleet which now consists of six current model TGX 540hp prime movers in order to tow the B-Double sized trailers.
“FROM THE MANAGEMENT, SALES AND SERVICE STAFF AT PATTERSON CHENEY RIGHT THROUGH TO THE SENIOR MANAGEMENT AT MAN THE SERVICE, HONESTY AND EFFICIENCY ARE EXCELLENT. THAT’S WHAT I DEMAND IN MY SUPPLIERS AND THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT I GET FROM THE RELATIONSHIP WITH MAN AND PATTERSON CHENEY AT ALL LEVELS,” VLAD SAID. “My opinion of MAN trucks is this. Firstly driver comfort – they are so easy and relaxing to drive. The long service intervals
and low maintenance costs – they use hardly any oil between services. The lubricated for life hubs. The outstanding fuel efficiency. The pulling power of the 540hp engine. No overheating issues – you don’t need to change the coolant until after 400,000kms – that’s simply unbelievable. I could go on and on - they are just brilliant trucks,” Vlad went on to say. “And importantly my drivers love driving them too,” he added. All the trucks are returned to Patterson Cheney for servicing – again Vlad speaks highly of the outstanding service he receives. “Whatever needs doing, whenever I need it, I find it gets done quickly and efficiently – it’s just great service,” Vlad said. The TGXs travel around 200,000kms per year and Openica plan to change over the trucks every 4 years. In keeping with projected growth, six new MAN TGXs are on order between now and the end of the year which will bring the MAN prime mover fleet to twelve.

Distinctive D-MAX delivers the goods for Dave Cowan & family
When it was time for Dave Cowan and his wife to get a second vehicle to be used both for recreation and some business it didn’t take much convincing for him to join the D-MAX generation.
Dave is a carpenter based in Pearcedale and works around the entire Mornington Peninsula. He specialises in domestic work with particular expertise in bathrooms, decks and pergolas.
“Even with all that on board, I was mighty impressed with the fuel economy, performance and just the overall feel of it. My mates were happy they didn’t have to pay much for fuel!” Dave explained.
After test driving the 4 x 4 LS-T Crew Ute at Patterson Cheney Dandenong, with Dealer Principal Terry Jewson and Sales Manager Adam Folino taking him through the features and benefits, Dave made a quick decision.
Dave said he was impressed with the bells and whistles that are standard on the D-MAX such as 6 airbags, Bluetooth connectivity and the stylish interior.
When he bought the D-MAX, he also ordered a few extra things to suit his family’s lifestyle which includes towing a boat to Wilson’s Promontory on a regular basis as well as the usual family ‘running around’ day to day and on weekends. So a Prestige canopy was on the list, as well as an ARB back step, an ARB Bullbar – all powder coated in silver to match the vehicle. He also added very distinctive black alloy wheels and special tyres. The vehicle was raised a little as well. Evidence of the power and fuel efficiency of the 3.0 litre turbo diesel engine was proven on a recent trip to Bermagui. Dave towed a large boat complete with outboard engine, as well as hauling enough fishing gear, food and eskies for 3 friends under the canopy.
10
“My wife loves it – she feels it’s really like a luxury car rather than a truck, like some other 4x4s are,” added Dave. “She loves the fact she gets a great view from inside the cabin plus the leather seats and the overall cabin ergonomics are just first class.”
The kids are also kept happy in the back with a DVD player that Dave had installed as well. Dave is thankful for the service he received at Patterson Cheney especially in terms of having all the extras fitted. “They made sure it all went smoothly and offered a replacement vehicle while things were being done. It made life so easy for us,” Dave went on to say. Dave said he will look no further when it’s next time to upgrade or replace another work vehicle. Meanwhile he takes his D-MAX back for regular servicing at Patterson Cheney Dandenong.
