ISUZU NPS 4X4’S JOIN GIBSON’S GROUNDSPREAD IN DUAL ROLE Long term Westar customer, Gibson’s Groundspread, have recently ordered 3 new Isuzu NPR 4x4s. These new Isuzus will be used for two specific roles - first as mini spreaders for those smaller jobs when a full size spreader is not required or would be uneconomic to use. The important secondary role the vehicles will play is to act as training vehicles for young drivers, enabling them to learn how to handle an AWD vehicle in a variety of conditions that may be encountered on the land. This critical training will make the drivers’ eventual transition to the larger MANs on the fleet smoother and easier.

company’s steady expansion they now operate a fleet of 19 MAN spreader trucks with 3 more on order. The company predominantly services the dairy, beef and sheep industries. The main products they use, fertiliser and lime, are bought in bulk from Melbourne and stored at the company’s depots. Full blending facilities at all three locations allow the company to custom mix blends to suit individual farmer’s requirements.

Gibson also operates 12 TGS 26.480 Tipper and 4-axle dog combination MANs which are carting Revive Recycled Compost to local farmers within the Gippsland Region. Revive Compost is produced by Gippsland Water’s Soil Organic Recycling Facility (SORF) which has been operating for a number of years, steadily increased its production capacity.

Manager Damien Gibson sees the smaller Isuzus opening up access to a bigger pool of drivers given these models can be driven on a light rigid licence and importantly, providing driving opportunities for young people in the Gippsland area. The Isuzus will be joining Gibson’s existing fleet of MAN TGM 4x4 models. Due to the

New Isuzu will provide a big lift to Helping Hands Mission

Helping Hands Mission Inc. is a Victorian based not-for-profit organisation that provides emergency support to Victorian families and individuals who are suffering as a result of extreme circumstances. 04

For all enquiries relating to Helping Hands Mission, or to make a donation please contact Melanie Kent. T: 03 9374 4236 • E: melanie@helpinghandsmission.org.au www.helpinghandsmission.org.au Working in partnership with a number of local and rural aid agencies, the organisation ensures emergency and material aid is provided and is accessible across a broad range of community needs.

families as well as local schools. The recent delivery of a 40 foot container loaded with products further cemented the relationship with the local community including the Inglewood & Districts Community Bank – a branch of Bendigo Bank.

Emergency products relate to food, whilst material aid covers a variety of items such as clothing, bedding, furniture, washing machines and fridges.

After a presentation by Melanie and board member Paul Cadzow to the bank’s Branch Manager Jon Champion, the bank awarded a sponsorship to Helping Hands Mission and underwrote the loan for the new truck.

Helping Hands was established in 2007 and is now overseen by CEO Melanie Kent and her band of over 140 volunteers. Operating 6 days a week, the organisation will feed about 200 families in Melbourne and 800 across regional Victoria in a typical week. To help meet all the associated costs, Helping Hands runs 3 ‘op shops’ which also double up as storage facilities for the collected goods. Another side benefit of the ‘op shops’ is that they have now become established ‘drop in’ centres for people wanting to share the warmth and atmosphere and simply have a chat and coffee with a friendly face. Helping Hands organises bus trips for needy families in country areas to come down to Melbourne for the day to enjoy a good meal and quite simply have a day away. “The rural community has been hit particularly hard by things such as the drought so our services are required more than ever,” said Melanie. Because of the growth of the organisation over the last couple of years and the increasing number of donations which have to be collected, the need arose for a bigger truck. Also, the trend for food to be packed onto pallets required an unrestricted loading area that could accommodate these.

It was at this point that both Westar Truck Centre and Isuzu Australia became involved with both companies, extending a helping hand to the charity to provide the best possible price for the selected Isuzu – an NNR 200. “We were blown away with the support and assistance we have received from Bendigo Bank, Westar Truck Centre and Isuzu Australia,” enthused Melanie. “Isuzu Australia also provided, at no charge, a Priority ‘One’ Service Agreement which covers all our scheduled services which will help us to keep running costs down,” Melanie added. “Our volunteer drivers are so excited with the new truck and love driving it. Its comfort and AMT transmission makes it so easy and relaxing to drive whist the tailgate lift makes loading and unloading a breeze. They’re at the point of drawing straws to see who the lucky person is who gets to drive it,” Melanie laughed. “This new Isuzu means we can continue to provide the support people really need and deserve. It also ensures we can pick up the many donations we receive on a timely basis and get them quickly to the people who need it most,” Melanie concluded.

Inglewood, a town north of Bendigo, has been an area for which the organisation has provided ongoing support for

WESTAR SERVICE CEMENTS THIS RELATIONSHIP Cam Taylor’s association with Boral extends way back for over 25 years when he was a Plant Manager at the company’s metropolitan plants. It was during this time that he formed a close relationship with the truck drivers and it so happened that when one of the drivers was looking to sell his truck, Cam decided to make a career change and move into driving.

Cam has now been an Owner Driver with Boral for the last sixteen years and trades under the name of Team Concrete Pumping. Delivering concrete from the Boral depot at Deer Park to both residential and commercial customers he averages around five drops per day. It was serendipity that got Cam looking at and eventually purchasing a Western Star. Initially, another manufacturer failed to fulfil an order for a truck for him when he learned of a 4784 model, conveniently painted in the Boral livery, becoming available due to a cancelled order. Although initially a little concerned at the size of the truck, after only a few weeks Cam has no issues whatsoever. “I realise I have a fantastic product here and I’m extremely happy with it,” Cam said. The Cummins powered 8x4 model has been spec’d up and blinged up considerably. Additions outside include a stainless steel chrome sun visor, spotlights and night time work lights. Also, the truck has additional outside mirrors fitted on the front of the bonnet and vision cameras mounted up on the door mirrors to aid visibility. Cam also had LED running lights fitted and a self greasing unit installed. “Being an owner driver I’m really busy so don’t have the time to get under the truck every week to check this so it’s really worthwhile,” Cam added. “The cab is really well designed from an ergonomic perspective – everything is in easy reach of you. The other thing I love is even though it’s a mid size truck, it has a ‘big truck’ feel with its wood grain dashboard and beautiful leather steering wheel. Compared to other midsize trucks in our fleet the interior is finished so well. Quite simply it gives me the big interstate truck feel which I love,” Cam went on to say.

06

The truck is fitted with automatic transmission and Roll Stability Control which Cam says makes you more aware of the way you drive the truck. “It’s also a very useful safety feature for owner drivers who use other independent drivers in their vehicle as it applies the brakes if the situation requires it,” said Cam. Cam reserves his most lavish praise for Westar Sales Consultant Sean Flaherty. “I’ve been buying trucks for a lot of years and Sean was by far the best salesman I’ve ever dealt with without a shadow of a doubt.”

“ I’ve been buying trucks for a lot of years and Sean was by far the best salesman I’ve ever dealt with without a shadow of a doubt.” “He was honest, open and worked hard to help me as much as he could. It was the little things he did that really impressed me like working really hard to source a centre console for me– I really couldn’t speak highly enough of him. Plus the Western Star driver’s pack that they gave me was the icing on the cake!” Cam said. The location of Westar Derrimut for servicing is another plus for Cam – it’s only a few kilometres from his home so he’ll be able to drop the truck off for a service then ride his bike home via the Caroline Springs to Werribee bike track! Custo mer Experiences THE ROCKE FAMILY NAME HAS BEEN A PART OF THE MELBOURNE WATERFRONT SCENE SINCE 1857 WHEN MARTIN ROCKE SAW AN OPPORTUNITY TO STRIKE OUT IN BUSINESS FOR HIMSELF BY BUYING A HORSE AND TRAY TO CART SUPPLIES TO THE MINERS AND SHOPKEEPERS AT BENDIGO.

08

ROCKE SOLID RELIABILITY KEEP CONTAINERS RUNNING SMOOTHLY Throughout the years the company has been through various incarnations and ownerships but has always remained true to pursuing its main business as a Melbourne waterfront carrier. In 1995, the Rocke family, headed by Peter Rocke, purchased Coulson Transport Pty. Ltd. Over the ensuing years, Peter’s sons, Michael, Matthew and Paul Rocke developed the business into a dominant Melbourne waterfront carrier, before selling to Mayne Nickless Limited in 1999. The current Rocke Brothers Pty. Ltd. began operating in 2003 in Justin Road, Brooklyn, before moving to the present

location at Alick Road, Tottenham, in 2004. The Company continues to specialise in waterfront transport and associated services, with the Rocke brothers having maintained an unbroken line of five generations of the family in wharf cartage. Although Mathew and Paul have now left the business, Michael remains actively involved and he constantly keeps everyone on their toes. Michael provides a vital link between industry relations, port activities, transport associations and most importantly Rocke’s client base. Today the company is managed by Managing Director Matt Simmons.

Affectionately known as ‘Simo’ he has been with Rocke since 2006 and has held numerous senior positions within the company giving him an unrivalled understanding of the ethos of what makes Rocke tick. Matt puts the success of the business down to a couple of factors. “What we do, we do well, efficiently and most importantly reliably – our aim at all times is to provide the best possible service to our customers,” Matt said. The company positions itself as a ‘mini port’ – 98% of all containers come from the wharf to Rocke’s depot before being delivered to customers. Given the nature of containers, Rocke move just about every product imaginable with work for freight forwarders making up around 50% of the business. Another important part of the business is unpacking and transporting products including specialist materials such as glass. With around 130 employees the company moves about 80,000 containers a year. The business has steadily expanded over the years and now operates 24 hours

Monday to Friday with the likelihood of moving to 24/7 operations in the future.

they will enable Rocke to transport 2 full size 40 foot containers.

Matt has been involved in the purchase process of trucks, and whilst the initial purchase of the first MAN TGSs was largely price driven, the remaining purchases have been based on the quality and reliability that the MANs have demonstrated.

In addition to the quality of the MANs the other factor that has influenced the decision to purchase more has been the quality of service Matt has received from both Westar and the factory.

“The MANs haven’t broken down at all – they’re just a great truck. Any minor thing that has cropped up the guys at Westar have got onto it and fixed it quickly and got us back on the road – they also service all our trucks. Our drivers also love them, particularly for their comfort and the 12 speed TipMatic which makes driving them so easy,” Matt went on to say. The MANs were optioned up with a number of additional safety features including blind spot monitoring and handbrake alerts. Today Rocke has 50 prime movers on its fleet with the latest delivery of 5 TGSs taking the MAN count to 20. These higher powered 26.540 models were purchased specifically to handle new A-Double skels that are being specially built for Rocke. Rated at 85 tonnes gross

“We get great support from Johan Middag and Micheal Collins in sales and Kevin in service at Westar, plus MAN Regional Sales Manager Don Meluccy has always been terrific to work with – he always does what he says he’s going to do!” Matt concluded. The company has exciting plans for the future including the building of a new $10 million state of the art, purpose designed facility at the newly developed Geelong ring road employment precinct at Corio, scheduled for completion in April 2016 and a new depot in Dandenong.

IRONMAN 4×4 PRODUCTS DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR ISUZU D-MAX AND MU-X Ironman 4x4 was originally established in 1958, as a Melbourne based suspension parts manufacturer, named Jacob Spring Works. The company in 1982 took shape as JSW Parts, (short for Jacob Spring Works) to design and supply leaf and coil springs for cars, trucks, buses and 4×4 vehicles.

JSW Parts soon became well known as a manufacturer and supplier of suspension parts all around the world. In 1988 JSW Parts launched the Ironman 4×4 brand of springs and suspension parts in response to the increasing popularity of 4×4 vehicles, recognising that standard suspension systems alone were not designed to cope with additional loads of bull bars, winches and extra fuel tanks. Driven by explosive sales of 4×4s, in 2004 the Ironman 4×4 branded range of products expanded quickly to meet the demand of off road users seeking solutions which would allow their vehicles to go off road loaded with accessories such as winches, recovery equipment, protective bars, canopies, lighting and electrical upgrades. More recently Ironman has introduced a complimentary range of lifestyle/camping products including silicone kettles and buckets, awnings, showers, toilets and chairs. This means that Ironman can supply all the essential equipment you need on your 4x4 vehicle to get you to where you’re going, then provide a full range of gear you can use when you arrive at your destination. “One of the key points of difference with Ironman is that our products are tailor made for individual 4x4 makes/models. There are a lot of subtle differences between vehicles and we take the time to make sure our parts exactly suit a particular model,” said Adam Craze, Ironman’s Director of 4x4.

“We purchased two of the vehicles through Patterson Cheney Isuzu Ute and dealt with Adam Folino who was terrific and made the purchase process a breeze,” Adam said.

“ The feedback from staff is extremely positive with reports that both vehicles are performing really well and are particularly well liked for their comfort, off-road capability and towing ability,” Ironman’s future looks bright, with expansion continuing both locally and all over the world. Ironman are also breaking into new market segments including the military and for use with off-road competition teams and drivers, many of which have successfully completed the Dakar Rally. Ironman 4×4 products are retailed across Australia by around 600 specialist 4x4 retailers and supplied by four warehouses in Melbourne, Newcastle, Brisbane and Perth.

Whilst the two Isuzu D-MAXs & one MU-X were bought initially for product development purposes, they play a vital role as company vehicles by Ironman staff often in remote locations and for use in off road expeditions. “The feedback back from staff is extremely positive with reports that both vehicles are performing really well and are particularly well liked for their comfort, off-road capability and towing ability,” Adam went on to say.
