“These new Isuzus, with their increased performance, greater driver comfort and reduced emissions are in keeping with our philosophy of operating the most efficient and environmentally sustainable trucks available.” Seven years after winning the original Iplex Pipelines tender, Metropolitan Express Construction Division has renewed its contract with the company. As a result of this success whilst running the current Isuzu fleet, the company is taking delivery of new Isuzu FVD 1000 and FV 1400 Autos from Patterson Cheney Isuzu Dandenong. As with the previous contract, Metropolitan Express supply and maintain the trucks and provide fully trained and experienced drivers – a business model Metropolitan Express Director Sam Pantou believes is the key to the company’s continued expansion and success. As before, the new Isuzus will be fitted with custom built Hiab cranes on the back of each vehicle, thus allowing for greater versatility and increased efficiencies. “Each Hiab crane is completely remote controlled, which ties in with our strong stance on safety - throughout our entire fleet, anything we have fitted to the trucks will be remote controlled. “Not only does the crane have a longer reach and large carrying capacity but further efficiencies are gained through the additional 4.2 metre extension, enabling reduced fuel costs by maximising deliveries,” Mr Pantou said. “These new Isuzus, with their increased performance, greater driver comfort and reduced emissions are in keeping with our philosophy of operating the most efficient and environmentally

Metropolitan Express has been operating since 1986 and over the last few years, under the directorship of Mr Pantou along with Mr Van Keulen, has moved to consolidate itself as a national rather than state based company. Recent development includes a new depot in Albury, expansion into the Sydney market and plans to set up in Queensland. The company has recently moved into a new head office at Notting Hill to cater for this growth - new contracts include USG Boral and Blue Scope steel NSW. Supporting the business’ growing needs is Patterson Cheney Isuzu, which has been supplying Metropolitan Express with its transport requirements since the early 1990s. “We have a very strong partnership with Patterson Cheney; in particular with Dealer Principal Terry Jewson and Sales Manager Paul Leggerini. This latest purchase is testament to that strength and a commitment to continuing that relationship” Mr Pantou said.

Custo mer Experiences So when Steve needed some new tilt tray trucks earlier in 2015 he decided to look carefully at the latest Isuzu offerings and as a result an order for three new trucks was placed.
Melbourne based heavy logistics and transport company Dandenong Heavy Haulage is a privately owned Australian company that commenced operations in August 1998 from modest premises in Keysborough. The company’s move to larger, purpose built premises in Hallam has seen DHH grow to be a leader in the transport of plant and equipment in Melbourne and regional Victoria with expertise in the safe and efficient transport of earthmoving and access equipment. Owned and managed by founder Domenic Quattrocchi, the company is still run very much as a family concern. Its focus on customer satisfaction and going the extra mile has seen the company not just achieve significant growth but retain many long term accounts including Coates Hire, Boral and Luxton’s Plant Hire. Coates Hire is a major customer, with DHH tasked with the collection of equipment such as scissor lifts for delivery to customers throughout metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria six days a week. Such is the scale of the work that a permanent member of DHH is located at Coates head office in order to co-ordinate daily activities, along with regular meetings which enable efficiencies to be made wherever possible. Workshop Manager Steve Sawrey is tasked with not only the maintenance of the thirty four trucks and fifteen trailers but also with evaluating and purchasing new vehicles. Whilst the company originally had Isuzus on its fleet, they moved to another brand for a short time. However, in Steve’s own words the other vehicles ‘just didn’t cut the mustard.’

So when Steve needed some new tilt tray trucks earlier in 2015 he decided to look carefully at the latest Isuzu offerings and as a result an order for three new trucks was placed. A new FVY 6x4 1400 Auto was delivered in July 2015 whilst an FYJ 200 8x4 twin steer arrived in October. Another FVY 6x4 joined the fleet in January 2016. All trucks are fitted with tilt trays built by ATM in Trafalgar, and are used primarily to transport all access equipment from Coates depots to customers. “I’ve always had a soft spot for Isuzu – from a performance and reliability aspect they’ve always been a step ahead they’re also really easy to work on,” Steve said. “Our trucks don’t do a huge mileage but the engines are running continually so reliability really is everything to us,” Steve went on to say. The new Isuzus are all automatic, helping to keep the general wear and tear down as well as making the trucks much easier to drive. “The new cabs are even more driver friendly, spacious and ‘car like’. The standard Bluetooth is really useful allowing us to run our mobiles through the unit which is a real bonus,” Steve added.

There has been a long association with Patterson Cheney Isuzu with both Sales Manager Paul Leggerini and Parts Manager Ashley Ryan. Paul actually sold the first Isuzu to Domenic when he first opened the business in 1998 and Paul has also been involved with the latest purchases.

Custo mer Experiences There would not be many family owned transport companies that have as long an association with the transport industry as R.E. Downes. Established by current owner Jason Downes’ grandfather back in 1927, the company has continued to trade from its original Nar Nar Goon location and since then has established itself as a leader in the transport of stock foods up the East coast of Australia. Jason Downes took over from his father around twenty years ago after serving an apprenticeship as a diesel mechanic and spending some time as a driver for other transport companies. He has continued to specialise in the stock feed market carting cattle and horse feed to produce stores up as far as Brisbane and across to Adelaide. Quality of service, specialisation and knowledge is what Jason believes has seen the company secure and hold on to a number of long term contracts with major milling companies. In addition to stock feed, they also cart an extensive amount of raw material for these mills. The Western Star 4864FXB was purchased to allow Downes to enter a new market segment of livestock transport. The new truck fitted with B-Double trailers hauls predominantly cattle to absolutely anywhere on the east coast. Outstanding value was the original reason for the purchase of the new Western Star, however since then the truck has gone on to really impress Jason for its other qualities. “After living with and driving the Star for a few months I’m impressed. It’s real good - drives nice, handles nice, I really like it.” Jason said. Jason drives the truck himself at least a couple of days each week. 06
“The best thing has to be the room in the cabin. It has the 54” Stratosphere sleeper cab and the ability to stand up and walk around is just fantastic,” Jason added. The truck is fitted with a number of extras including a microwave oven, 240 volt inverter, Ballistic truck phone, Pure Air Bunk cooler, drawer fridge and Light Force driving lights. The other noticeable addition is the customised bullbar, manufactured by Whitlock Bullbars in Dandenong that Jason calls the ‘Downes Special’! “It’s something I have on all my trucks. It’s a little shorter than most bullbars and sits flusher and it just looks better,” Jason went on to say. The truck is fitted with the 600Hp 15 litre Cummins ISX engine fitted with EGR technology. Jason is a big fan of engines fitted with this technology of which the Cummins utilises cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and a diesel particulate filter (DPF) to meet ADR80/03 emission levels. The Gen II EGR ISX engines were introduced in the second half of 2012 following a program of continuous product improvements to enhance reliability and durability, fuel economy and driveability. Jason dealt with Sales Consultant Bob Fuerst, at Patterson Cheney Trucks Dandenong. “Yeah it was all good dealing with Bob - there was no stress and the purchase went really smoothly,” Jason said. All the trucks are serviced inhouse with Jason using his considerable diesel mechanic skills when necessary. Whilst this is the first Western Star on Downes fleet, there’s a good chance it won’t be the last.

AGrade Removals and Storage, based in Wangaratta, North East Victoria was established by Craig Geary in October 2012. After working for a number of removals companies over the years in different roles, Craig felt the time was right to branch out on his own. Whilst AGrade do both domestic and commercial furniture removals, a major part of the business is the transport of brand new gym equipment. This can take Craig anywhere from Sydney right up to Darwin, through to Alice Springs and down to Adelaide. Craig handles not just the transport but the complete installation and assembly of the gym equipment – a task that sometimes requires up to eight additional people to complete. In addition to the gym equipment, he has also obtained contracts to transport and fit-out international airport lounge furniture. AGrade’s specially built trailer manufactured by Aldom in Adelaide is extremely versatile, allowing Craig to carry multiple loads of differing sizes. It features a very low floor and up to 100 cubic metres of space along with a hydraulic mezzanine floor that allows equipment to be carried on one level and other products such as furniture, cars and boats on another. The trailer can be sectioned off internally and a 08
side door at the front allows for easy access. Craig put a lot of time and effort into what must be one of the best looking truck/trailer combinations on the road. With its distinctive all over silver paintwork and coordinated graphics this TGX really stands out on the road. The TGX is fitted with a number of additional extrasadditional driving lights, numerous LED lights on the exterior and a bullbar, adding to the impressive look of the vehicle. But this truck doesn’t just look good, it performs where it matters, especially in the area of keeping ownership costs low. After three years Craig is as happy with the MAN as the day he picked it up. “The fuel economy is outstanding. I can get from Mornington, Victoria all the way up to Brisbane on just the 2 tanks – that’s over 3km/litre.Given I’m at close to maximum weight most of the time that’s all the more remarkable,” Craig added. “The long service intervals are a real bonus and keep overall costs down. And even after 187,000kms I still have the original tyres on the back of the prime mover.” “The comfort is brilliant; the lumbar support on both driver and passenger seats is great, the cab interior is really well laid out with all the controls close to hand and it’s just so easy to drive,”Craig went onto say. Craig purchased the truck from Westar Sales Consultant Johan Middag. “Johan was very helpful and particularly knowledgeable about the MAN product and guided me through the entire purchase process,” said Craig. “In a nutshell I’m over the moon with my MAN and if the opportunity ever arises I’ll certainly be buying another one,” Craig summed up.

INDIGENOUS DESIGN’S D-MAX PLAYS KEY ROLE IN NATURAL ENVIRONMENT SOLUTIONS. “They’re great, very comfortable with a powerful diesel engine. I love driving them and they’re simply a good honest working vehicle which suits our needs perfectly.” Indigenous Design was established by Alan Noy in 1987 in response to the community interest in indigenous flora and fauna. The company has a clear aim to provide practical and innovative solutions that lead to the protection and enhancement of the natural environment. They have achieved this by utilising environmentally sensitive land management and landscaping practices. Indigenous Design provides an interdisciplinary approach to landscape and natural resource management through its three business departments: Indigenous Design Environmental Services (IDES), Indigenous Design Land Management (IDLM) and Indigenous Design Landscaping (IDLS). IDES is an on-ground works provider enhancing and maintaining biodiversity (flora and fauna) through specialised and effective weed control, revegetation and other recognised land management practices. IDLM, a dynamic environmental consultancy, specialises in ecological assessment, land management planning and environmentally sensitive landscape design. IDLS provides professional landscape design and construction services for domestic, commercial and educational providers seeking sustainable and environmentally sensitive landscape solutions. Having established a diverse range of customers in the domestic sector and varied industries including local and state government, mining, power and water suppliers, the group now employs sixty five staff across three depots located in Melbourne, Wonthaggi and Morwell, servicing the Gippsland and Port Phillip regions. Quality & Development Officer Ash Deans is a long term Indigenous Design employee with the Environmental Services division and is responsible for selecting and specifying all fleet vehicles.
The vehicles are used for a variety of purposes including transporting crew and equipment to work sites and carrying a myriad of plant and materials. Two of the vehicles are fitted with 400 litre Quick Spray Rigs. “They’re great, very comfortable with a powerful diesel engine. We’ve had no issues with them at all – the reliability is outstanding. I love driving them and they’re simply a good honest working vehicle which suits our needs perfectly,” Ash said. “We often tow trailers with heavy loads including a chipper and the D-MAX copes fine with all of these,” Ash added. “We’re finding the fuel efficiency is also very good,” he went on to say. In an especially nice touch, in keeping with the company’s practical commitment to the environment, additional shrubs and trees are planted by Indigenous Design to offset the carbon footprint of the diesel fuel the D-MAXs use. A win-win all round! Ash dealt with Sales Consultant Travis Jamieson at Patterson Cheney Isuzu Ute, Dandenong. “Between dealing with Travis for purchasing the vehicles and Con organising the finance the entire process was a dream run – they were both great to deal with,” said Ash. At this stage another five new D-MAX’s are scheduled for delivery during 2016.

It was the positive experience that the group had with the Isuzu Trucks on their fleet that encouraged the management team to look at the Isuzu D-MAX product. Value for money was one of the key attractions coupled with the no nonsense rugged design and the attractive chattel mortgage arrangement organised through Con Nitsikas of Patterson Cheney’s In-House Finance arm. The first vehicle was delivered in February 2014 and there are now twelve 4WDs on the fleet – a mixture of manual and autos and Single and Crew Cab models. 11
