Glen Cameron Group to use new Western Star for Interstate division. Leading 3rd party logistics supplier the Glen Cameron Group will put its latest Western Star to work in their interstate division. The truck was purchased by longterm sub-contractor Neil Beattie and will be set up in a B-Double configuration. Neil has been with The Glen Cameron Group for twenty four years and a professional driver for over thirty years. The deal was negotiated by Patterson Cheney Sales Consultant Tony Lamanna – this being the second Western Star he has sold to the group. The truck features the Detroit DD15 560 horse power engine, well known for its power and control but also many other qualities - all designed to enhance fuel economy. “With the powerful Detroit engine this new Western Star 4864FXB really is the ideal truck for Line Haul work,” Tony said. “Unlike many of its competitors we could also spec it with a large 40inch sleeper cab and still have it legal for B-Double work. And of course being a Western Star it has the Stratosphere sleeper cab allowing Neil to stand up and walk around which I know he’ll love,” Tony added. Joe Phillips has had a lifelong passion for pigeons and pigeon racing and also carries with him a wealth of information on both the industry in general and the truly amazing homing skills of these birds. Having worked for many years as a plumber and approaching retirement, Joe wanted to do something that would benefit all 120 members of the seven affiliated clubs which are part of The Greater Melbourne Pigeon Federation. Traditional transport methods to races were rudimentary using cages loaded on to a semi-trailer. Joe wanted to build a vehicle that could transport all the member’s birds more securely and quickly whilst ensuring complete comfort for the valued passengers. Joe’s vision has culminated in a brand new Isuzu FFD Premium complete with a custom designed body built by Chris Cassar & Peter Buttigieg which could only be described as something of a work of art. This unique body can carry 3,200 birds in its 97 individual cages which are designed for maximum comfort. The birds are placed in baskets each of which have enough space between them to allow for ventilation as well as providing a continual water supply and food for what can be a long journey. Two extractor fans and six vents ensure the air is refreshed regularly to keep the birds cool. A back door provides access to a walkway that runs the entire 7 metres of the truck providing easy access to all the cages. Weather permitting, race meetings are held throughout the cooler months at various Victorian locations as far afield as Mildura, from where they find their way back to Melbourne. Each bird has an electronic ring attached to its legs so its individual performance can be measured. Joe’s search for a truck led him to Patterson Cheney Isuzu. “A lot of pigeon flyers are truck drivers and they told me that Isuzu have got the best name in the business – they just don’t break down they told me!” Joe said. “I met Sales Consultant Matt Evans and told him I wanted auto transmission, a powerful engine, air suspension and a 7 metre body and Matt duly recommended the FFD model with AMT, “ Joe continued. “I was very impressed with Matt and ordered on the spot! The help and service he has provided in getting the truck just how I wanted has been magic. Whenever I needed something done it happened straight away – the service has been incredible,” he went on to say. Matt arranged to have additional water tanks, a dump valve, bullbar and stone guard fitted.“Our driver also loves it – just like driving a car he tells me!” added Joe. The body’s design also allows for a progressive release of the birds compared to a single mass release with the previous trailer – much fairer for the racers and safer for the pigeons. Joe’s generosity means that members of The Greater Melbourne Pigeon Federation now have access to the best pigeon transport possible and Joe is happy for this arrangement to continue for many years to come – fully funded by himself. “Our new Isuzu truck is a win-win for all the members and the birds - we can get to race meetings quickly and the pigeons are much more comfortable and refreshed throughout the journey,” Joe concluded.

The sight of left over building materials on domestic construction sites is certainly an eyesore but the fact that each site will contribute 30m3 in landfill comes as the biggest shock. Having spent twenty five years in various roles in the building industry, Job Site Recyclers founder and owner Daniel Reaper saw the wastage that was endemic on building sites – something that hadn’t changed for years. He saw an opportunity to keep building sites clean and at the same time reduce the amount of construction material that ended up in landfill. Job Site Recyclers was formed seven years ago as a result of Daniel’s vision and today has grown to be the dominant player in recycling and reusing builder’s waste in Melbourne with a blue chip list of clients including Metricon, Mirvac, AV Jennings and Carter Grange amongst others. “Our objective is to reduce, re-¬use and recycle the copious amounts of waste being created on domestic building sites every day in Victoria and to keep building sites clean, tidy and safe for the people who work on them,” Daniel said. “There is not much we can’t recycle; in fact we end up recycling 96% of the material that would have been destined for landfill. We have connections with recycling depots all over the state to take the variety of different materials. We also manufacture products such as crushed rock and mulch among other things,” Daniel went on to say. “Best of all, when you factor in the ever rising cost of landfill our service will not cost the builder any more compared to using traditional waste removal methods,” Daniel added.

JSR provide unlimited attendance during the course of the build. Builders are also recognising that a clean site is preferred by their customers and provides a positive reflection on their image, thus helping to differentiate them from other builders. Another benefit from the regular clean ups is that tradespeople have better access to the site resulting in fewer delays and greater safety. JSR now has around fifty staff and numerous utes and trucks on its fleet. The association with Isuzu came about due to dissatisfaction with their previous truck supplier. The trailer bodies are also customised to JSR requirements and divided into sections to carry the different materials. Given the continued focus on environmental issues, Daniel expects demand for their services will only increase. To cater for future demand and expansion the company’s current depot in South Dandenong will shortly be supplemented by a depot in Broadmeadows which is likely to be operational at the start of 2017.

Lane Transport might be based in the small regional town of Killarney, south west Victoria but the company has made a big impact across Australia with the transport of recycled paper and food packaging. Despite coming from a farming family, owner and manager Noel Lane is the first to admit that it is transport that he has in his blood. Initially starting in 1990 with a single truck transporting reels of paper from Melbourne to Adelaide and returning with loads of timber and general freight, the company went through a significant expansion in the early 2000’s. The company now runs 30 B-Doubles and 3 single Tautliners across the Eastern seaboard with Melbourne being the primary base along with Sydney, the Hunter Valley and Adelaide. The transport of recycled paper products is still the major part of Lanes Transport’s business. However, the company now specialises in other areas including the carting of empty food packaging such as bottles and cans one way, followed by timber and building products on the return journeys. The growth of Lane Transport is clearly the result of a commitment to service that Noel abides by. “I personally like to put passion into what we do – we try and get all our processes as close to perfect as possible. Also, loyalty is an important ingredient – we’ve been loyal to our customers and in return they’ve been loyal to us,” Noel said. Having run a North American branded truck fleet for many years, Noel only recently started looking at the European offerings. Whilst visiting Westar Truck Centre earlier in the year Sales Consultant Micheal Collins offered to give Noel a demo in an MAN TGX 26.540.

“After extensively driving the MAN for a couple of days I had just a single word to describe it; “phenomenal”. I then handed it over to one of my drivers and he felt exactly the same way,” was Noel’s enthusiastic commentary. “I then spoke to a friend who had driven an MAN for a while and he told me that he thought it was the most underrated truck brand in Australia! So I didn’t need any more confirmation than that,” Noel added. After the obligatory paperwork an order was placed for a TGX 26.540 XLX cab. “Sales consultant Micheal was great to deal with – he really couldn’t do enough for us. He didn’t pressure us – he was just very easy to get along with,” said Noel. “After having it for a few months my first impressions haven’t changed, in fact they’ve been reinforced more strongly – quite simply, we love it. The comfort and drivability are really the best things about it. My driver spends the entire week away in it and it’s the driver friendliness that is so good – it’s just such a nice place to be and he loves it,” Noel went on to say. Noel also reports that the fuel efficiency is proving to be good and he believes that it should only get better and better over time once the truck is fully run-in. Given the overwhelming positive response with his first MAN Noel has recently taken delivery of another. And as for the future, watch this space!

“The way Patterson Cheney have their service centre set up is also great – I can drop it in at 5am in the morning and it will be ready for me at 3pm,” said Ben. “Or you can drop it off in the evening and take advantage of the 24 hour weekday servicing.”

The company ensures that new commercial buildings meet or exceed specific Green Star sustainability ratings. “Basically our role is to ‘tune’ a new building up, making sure all the services are talking to each other properly for maximum efficiency and to minimise energy wastage,” explained Vining Air Director, Neil Vining. “If there’s a problem we’ll find it.” “We’re the extension arms of the Consultants and they use us for our knowledge and practical advice,” Neil went on to say. When one thinks of investigative skills it’s law enforcement that immediately comes to mind but these are precisely the qualities that Vining Air’s skilled workforce apply when they are called in to find out why existing buildings do not perform as expected from an energy use perspective.

Via a thorough investigative process, involving both extensive industry knowledge and hi-tech tools, Vining Air establishes where a building is failing to meet its energy objectives. This could be the result of an air leak, the failure of an air conditioning unit or lighting that fails to shut down after hours.

Neil’s son Ben also works in the business and runs one of the newest D-MAX’s. The vehicle has a number of enhancements including powder coated alloy wheels, custom bullbar and winch. Ben has recently returned from an epic trip all the way up North to Cape York in the vehicle.

One such example is an almost new office building in central Melbourne whose energy usage (predominantly heating gas) was far greater than forecast. Vining Air were called in and after substantial investigation found that at the top of the 20 storey building’s atrium there was an area that hadn’t been sealed correctly resulting in the atrium acting like a giant chimney. After sealing was carried out energy usage returned to normal levels and energy costs for the tenant were duly lowered. A win all round.

“The D-MAX performed faultlessly on the long trip; I found it really comfortable and the fuel consumption was fantastic given it was fully loaded and for the last part of the journey I was also towing a camper trailer. I’m wrapped in it, it’s a good, reliable, tough truck that’s great for both work and going away at the weekend,” Ben summed up.

Other services that Vining Air perform relate to yearly ‘smoke management system’ checks and the company is also moving into the relatively new area of ‘building enclosure testing’ – a test that finds leakage in buildings. SERVICE SPECIALS Maintaining an efficient cooling system will keep you cool this Summer. To maintain the ideal running temperature of a vehicle’s engine, an efficient cooling system must be in place. The temperature caused by combustion inside engine cylinders can exceed 2,OOO°C and at the heart of effective cooling lies the radiator. Because an array of engine components are now made with composite materials (plastics, etc.) and lightweight metals such as aluminium alloy and magnesium, we must focus on the maintenance and service standards imposed if we are to expect many thousands of kilometres of trouble free motoring. Cooling system fluid quality is one critical component of these standards.

How to stay cool. Coolants protect the engine. Long Life Coolant coats metal surfaces to prevent corrosion. It also keep all hoses and seals durable and pliable during their service life. It is good practice to pre mix coolants prior to filling the cooling system. This eliminates the guess work in estimating the cooling system capacity and ensures accurate concentration. Refer to the manufacturer’s specifications and use a coolant that meets or exceeds the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications. Oil or diluted or ineffective coolant combined with rust and sludge formations damage aluminium radiators. Coolants must conform to AS/NZS2108.1 Standard.
