D-Max Ute – the ideal buddy for the Tubby When Andrew Weston, owner of Escape RV was on the lookout for a Ute to transport his Tubby Ute camper to RV shows around Australia it didn’t take him long to figure out that the D-Max Crew Cab would be the ideal vehicle. Escape RV, located in Kilsyth, is a specialist manufacturer of custom designed slide on/slide off campers that are fitted to a wide variety of vehicles including 4WDs and Utes. The Tubby is the brainchild of Andrew Weston who saw a major problem with existing camper trailers which did not allow for anything else to be towed behind the vehicle. The Tubby Ute Camper is unique amongst Ute Campers by virtue of the fact that the entire unit can be accommodated in the back of a Crew Cab Ute. “With the Tubby secured safely in the back of the Ute, you can take all the family but still tow all your toys behind – boat, jet ski, trail bikes, horse float – in fact just about anything. And then when you get to the camp site and unload the tubby you have all the space in the back of the Ute available,” Andrew said. The 4x2 D-Max has many great features including its class-leading towing capacity and a powerful 3 litre turbo diesel engine. Add to this its flat torque curve which contributes to making the D-Max the ideal towing vehicle.

“It’s really comfortable and luxurious inside whilst underneath it has the Isuzu truck heritage so it’s got the toughness I need. And the fact that it can tow a full 2,500kg regardless of the vehicles Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) is a major benefit.” Andrew went onto say. The Tubby was released late in 2010 and has generated enormous interest. The unit slides in and out of the Ute tray (Single, Space or Crew Cab) and has inbuilt legs for easy manoeuvering. It is constructed from durable aluminium and fibreglass composite panels which provide outstanding insulation. The unit is available with three different sized tents and a variety of options are available including a slide out stainless steel kitchen, water tank, pump, battery and charger – a remote electric leg kit is also available. “The Tubby is proving particularly popular with people travelling to and from Tasmania by ferry – unlike a normal camper trailer the Tubby does not incur any additional fees,” Andrew added. MetroMovers AMT Isuzus make light work of removals

Furniture Removal trucks face a daunting challenge negotiating suburban streets that are more suited to a small car than large truck. Narrow roads, constricted driveways, overhanging trees, large numbers of parked cars and the ubiquitous speed humps all conspire to add to the workload of the removalist before he’s even lifted a box. But one thing that can really help a removalist is an automatic truck – and that’s where Isuzu’s Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) comes into its own and was a key factor in MetroMovers decision to select Isuzu.

TRUCK FORCE | APRIL 2011

“Our aim is to make our drivers’ lives easier and make it easy for them to operate the trucks in suburban areas – Isuzu’s AMT is just fantastic and really takes the stress out of stop start city driving and manoeuvering in confined spaces,” said MetroMovers Director Peter Borain. “My drivers love them; they are just so easy and relaxing to drive and make their job safer and less tiring. The driver’s seat is a revelation – there are so many adjustments you can make to find the perfect driving position. The AMT also enables us to train new drivers so much quicker which is a real bonus,” Peter added. MetroMovers, based in Clayton, was established 8 years ago and covers both the domestic and commercial markets. The ethos of the company is to offer a consistent package of services that doesn’t

change – with the simple aim of ensuring long term repeat customers – a strategy that is paying off with steady growth achieved each year since inception.

“The service at Patterson Cheney was also very good. We were looked after well and all our requests were met in a timely and courteous fashion,” Peter said.

It was this growth that led to the requirement for six new trucks at the end of last year. Peter and fellow Directors Mairead Carstens and Daniel Maguire took their time reviewing the available brands and conducted numerous test drives. In addition to the AMT feature there were many other factors that led them to the conclusion that Isuzu was the right choice.

The Isuzu FRR 600’s were all delivered during November and December 2010 after having their wheelbases extended and custom truck bodies fitted with ‘removal friendly’ features including smooth interiors and equipment designed to protect customers’ fragile items. All are being sign written in the company’s distinctive livery which acts as a very effective mobile billboard for the business.

“It was the complete package that convinced us to go with Isuzu – they are just so far ahead of other truck brands in terms of comfort, equipment, horsepower, general specifications and crucially, whole of life servicing costs. The inclusion of a 5 year warranty was nice icing on the cake. Quite simply, with the Isuzu you get a lot of truck for your money and it’s just perfect for our needs,” Peter went on to say.

The long term outlook is extremely positive for Metromovers and as such future truck purchases are planned. In Peter’s own words they’ll be ‘sticking with Isuzu.’ Contact: T: 1300 13 89 60 E: peter@metromovers.com.au W: www.metromovers.com.au

CUSTOMER EXPERIENCES

New Detroit Diesel DD13 & DD15 Euro V Engines now available for Western Stars Following in the footsteps of the legendary Detroit Series 60 engine come the all new revolutionary Detroit DD heavy duty engine range – Detroit Diesel’s most technologically advanced engines yet. The new engines are lighter, quieter and more fuel efficient and have only been released onto the Australian market after an extensive test regime that saw five of the engines complete a rigorous 120-point testing on Australian roads. These five trial engines, including two DD13s and three DD15s, clocked up over 1.4 million kilometres since May 2009 hauling everything from single trailers to B-Doubles and road trains on both intra and interstate routes.

Western Star the truck of choice for Brown’s Stockfeed

Feedback from drivers of these test trucks has been fantastic – they’ve travelled from Melbourne to Perth, along the east coast of Australia, through stop-start traffic in cities and in regional areas – and in all conditions the DD13 and DD15 have impressed. Results from this ‘real world’ testing reveal an engine with excellent low down torque, great throttle response and most importantly, outstanding reliability. Detroit has long been known to have some of the most fuel efficient engines in the business and the new DD15 continues to build on this tradition. Using advanced technology called Amplified Common Rail Fuel Systems, these engines optimise fuel economy and combustion, while turbo compounding on the DD15 turns wasted exhaust gases into useable energy. The DD15 also features an extremely wide torque band and pulls down to1100RPM, which means less shifting.

Brown’s Stockfeed based in Leongatha, was started by the three Brown brothers Cameron, Chris and Tim. All three had extensive experience in the transport and stockfeed business and when the option arose to purchase their father’s stockfeed business due to his retirement in 2002, they decided to give it a go.

Eight years on, the business has achieved steady growth each year and is now a successful player in the stockfeed market supplying both grain and hay direct to farmers in regional markets, particularly the Gippsland region. The company also transports bulk loads to the capital cities of Adelaide and Sydney and the back loading of grain from the Mallee and Riverina districts ensures trucks don’t return empty. The company has its own grain mill in Leongatha, so the processing and transport of grain is a major part of the business. Brown’s association with Western Star and Paterson Cheney dates back to their formation. Chris and Tim bought their first Western Star eight years ago and since then have gone on to take delivery of another eight units – all of them purchased through sales consultant Tim Washington. Western Star is now the only prime mover brand used on the fleet which comprises a mixture of tippers, drop decks and pressure tankers, custom designed for stockfeed.

“We started off with one Western Star…then two and then five – it just grew from there,” laughs Cameron Brown. “Tim Washington has always been great to deal with and was very helpful throughout the pre and post purchase process – he’s the only sales consultant we’ve dealt with,” said Cameron. “I’m very happy with the way the Western Stars have performed – they’re put together well and built to last. We’ve got a couple of units with seven/eight hundred thousand kilometres on them now and they’re standing up really well – we’ve had no trouble at all,” Cameron went onto say. “The headroom in the sleeper cabs is particularly good which is great for our drivers as it allows them to get up and walk around the cab easily,” Cameron added. All the trucks are CAT powered, but given CAT’s withdrawal from the Australian engine market, any future purchases will necessitate a change of direction. “Tim Washington has already discussed the new Detroit DD13/15 range to me and it sounds pretty good, so it’s certainly something we’ll consider for our future Western Stars,” Cameron said. MAN – an impressive heritage! Whilst MAN today is recognised as a manufacturer of trucks that offer cutting edge technology, reliability and highly advanced diesel engines, many people are unaware that MAN were in fact responsible for the development of the original diesel engine.

MAN Group – innovations and achievements 1873 Germany’s first rotary printing press for newspapers

The origins of MAN date back to 1840 with the foundation of Sander’sche Maschinen-Fabrik, Augsburg. Following a merger of two companies in 1898, a new enterprise was registered in Augsburg as Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg AG (M.A.N.) in 1908.

1888 Germany’s first triple-expansion steam engine

In 1893 Rudolf Diesel and Heinrich von Buz, Director of the Maschinenfabrik Augsburg entered into a co-operation to build the world’s first diesel engine. Buz supported Diesel in all the necessary development work – M.A.N. thus became the cradle of the diesel engine.

Today, following a number of mergers and acquisitions the MAN Groups operations cover a vast spectrum of industries including commercial vehicles, industrial equipment and facilities, printing systems and of course, diesel engines. Over the last century and a half the group has been responsible for many technical innovations and achievements.

levels of standard equipment they’ve got, they’re reasonably priced too,” Mark went onto say.

The company, based in the Victorian country town of Blampied, near Ballarat, transports a wide variety of livestock throughout south eastern Australia for a number of different customers.

The number of MANs in the fleet now totals five, with Mark’s latest purchase, a TGX 26.480 model having recently been delivered in February this year. All Prendergast’s vehicles are auto transmission models, a feature which Mark reports his drivers enjoy due to them providing a more relaxing trip.

Owner Mark Prendergast bought his first MAN, a TGA 26.480 around 4 years ago. “Westar had brought a demo unit round to show me a few months earlier and after a good look over it and a test drive I came away pretty impressed,” Mark said.

“Westar have always scored pretty high on the pre and post purchase experience – any small issues we’ve had have been fixed quickly. I’ve always enjoyed a good working relationship with the Westar personnel,” Mark added.

Mark didn’t place an order immediately, but when the time came for another truck a few months later he decided to purchase an MAN from Westar Campbellfield. As it turns out, it was the first of many.

Mark adheres to a philosophy of regular and comprehensive servicing of his MANs to ensure long term reliability and maximum resale value. Accordingly all the trucks are serviced at Westar Derrimut, conveniently close to Laverton where the trucks are often loading and unloading.

“After living with our first TGS for a while we decided that this was the ideal prime mover for us and we’ve been buying MANs from Westar ever since,” said Mark. “They’re comfortable, tough and reliable with good power. Importantly, the fuel economy is good too. Also, considering the high
