news Great Value Tradepack is back. Isuzu have introduced the latest edition of its ready-to-work favourite, the Tradepack. The NPR 200 Tradepack is available in two versions: Standard and Premium and both models can be driven on a car licence. In Standard guise, the Tradepack is fitted with a heavy duty aluminium tray body measuring 4,500 mm x 2,122 mm with twopiece 303 mm high drop sides. For added practicality, the body features a three-piece ladder rack, incorporating a zinc-coated headboard. The two galvanised coated rear racks are removable should the full tray load space be required.

Towing is catered for with a genuine Isuzu 3,500 kg tow bar incorporating a 24 V, 7 pin flat plug trailer wiring harness and chrome tow ball. For protection, the truck is fitted with a genuine airbag-compatible Isuzu polished aluminium bullbar. The package is completed with special Tradepack decals and mudflaps. Power for both models comes courtesy of the four-cylinder turbocharged and air-toair intercooled SiTEC Series III 155 engine, producing 114 kW of power at 2,600 RPM and 419 Nm of torque between 1,600 – 2,600 RPM. In the Standard model, the SiTEC 155 is mated to Isuzu’s smooth-shifting 5-speed

news Million kms and still going strong. Remember 1988 – Australia’s bicentennial celebrations were in full swing, Kylie was singing ‘I Should Be So Lucky’ and John Leveque’s FVR Isuzu started pounding the roads. Twenty four years later John’s Isuzu is still going strong – all the more remarkable when you take into account that it’s running on the original engine, gearbox and diffs. Based in Highett, John is a sub-contractor with Toll’s ‘Fast Division’ and has been driving for 28 years. John has owned the truck for 18 years and does much of the minor servicing himself but for any major work he takes it back to Patterson Cheney, Dandenong. The truck turned over the million km mark at the start of the year and shows no signs of slowing down. John keeps it in excellent condition as evidenced by this photo. Here’s to the next million!
RSPCA Mobile Animal Care Unit delivered. An Isuzu FSD 700 Long fitted with a custom designed body by Rambler Concepts was recently delivered to RSPCA Victoria by Patterson Cheney Trucks. The flexible set-up of this unit will allow the RSPCA to use it for a number of different applications including assessment of injured or sick animals during disaster emergencies. Appropriate surgical responses can be put into place immediately utilising the on board, fully operational veterinary theatre. The unit can also provide disease outbreak support, lost and found registration, a holding area for lost animals or as a base for the co-ordination of emergency responses and communication back to head office during disasters. The vehicle comes into its own when veterinary staff are required to attend inspectorate cases and provide immediate veterinary assessments.
In conjunction with local councils, the RSPCA unit also extends to providing facilities for mobile de-sexing, microchipping and vaccination clinics within suburban and remote areas with high feral or stray animal populations. Ultimately
these initiatives reduce the number of animals that end up in shelters. The unit will also be used within the community for educational purposes promoting numerous animal welfare initiatives. TRUCK FORCE | JULY 2012

Mill Park Towing and Isuzu – “they focus on keeping the customer happy and getting the vehicle back on the road – you can’t ask for more than that”
After thirty five years in the towing business, Greg Wagg, owner of Mill Park Towing knows a thing or two about tow trucks. And one thing he firmly believes is that there is no better truck than Isuzu. “I love the Isuzus – they do everything I want them to do and more – great comfort, outstanding reliability and they’re just so user friendly which is why my drivers also love them,” Greg said. Greg has operated Isuzus since 1986 when he ordered his first SBR model. Since then he has gone on to operate more than twenty over the years. Greg now has a fleet of six trucks and tends to buy a new truck each

year. His latest model is an FFR 500 delivered just a couple of months ago and he now has six operating 24/7. All the trucks are fitted with Inman tilt trays. Greg has a couple of key long term business contracts for the Northern suburbs area where he operates from. The first is with Victoria Police where Greg is responsible for stolen and recovered vehicles and the second is with Allianz Roadside Assistance where he operates a breakdown recovery service for a number of major car brands. In addition to these contracts the company also handles standard motor vehicle accidents and car dealership work.

Greg reserves his greatest praise for the service he has received from Patterson Cheney personnel over such a long period, in particular current Dealer Principal Terry Jewson, and Service Manager Wayne Murphy. “I’ve had an excellent long term relationship with both Terry and Wayne and their sales and service staff over the years – they do a fantastic job and are completely customer focused - I really couldn’t be looked after any better,” Greg went on to say. “Any issue I’ve had has just been fixed, no questions asked – they focus on keeping the customer happy and getting the vehicle
back on the road - you can’t ask for more than that,” Greg added. Greg takes particular pride in the relationship he has with his employees. Evidence of this can be found in the effort that he personally went to in ensuring one of his employees could remain a driver with the company after suffering a seizure. After his recovery, the driver had a restriction placed on the gross weight of the truck he could drive. Greg went out on a limb to have an Isuzu 500 ‘downgraded’ to 8 tonne GVM so that the truck came in within the legal weight limit but was still able to tow two cars. Greg worked closely
with Patterson Cheney Sales Manager Paul Leggerini who, in Greg’s words, ‘went out of his way’ to ensure this ‘downgrade’ was carried out in the most cost efficient and timely manner. Given Greg’s business philosophy it’s not surprising that Mill Park Towing has more than enough work on its books and a crew of loyal employees.

Mick’s way is the key to the success of Highland Haulage. Highland Haulage owner Mick Linger firmly believes that success in business relies on staying involved at the grass roots level. This is why he often heads out on the road carting freight from the head office in Deloraine, Tasmania right up the east coast of Australia, just like his regular drivers. “It’s the only way I can really get an understanding of what’s happening right at the coal face – to experience first hand what my drivers experience really is invaluable to my understanding. I also enjoy seeing and meeting our customers – it ensures I remain competitive in business,” Mick said. “If there happens to be any issues emerging I can take immediate action to fix things,” he went on to say. Mick grew up in the transport business – his father acquired his first truck in 1971 and ran a successful trucking business. In 1994 Mick acquired his first truck and commenced operating as Highland Haulage, often working in tandem with his dad. Mick initially intended to have just one truck and a couple of trailers. However, things have worked out just a little better than Mick anticipated – eighteen years down the track the company has achieved steady growth and now has a fleet of thirteen trucks and seventeen trailers. The business is very much a family affair with Mick’s wife Chris heavily involved whilst his son Markas, an apprentice mechanic, helps out on his days off. Mick’s diverse range of customers means he transports a variety of general freight from Tasmania right up the east coast of Australia and occasionally over to Perth. Highland Haulage now averages around a dozen crossings a week from Tasmania to the mainland and has depots in Melbourne and Sydney. The company also specialises in loading and unloading containers for a number of customers including one that supplies goods to King Island out of Melbourne. Mick’s association with Western Star started with a second hand model which proved so good that Mick went on to purchase a new Constellation model. He now has six Western Stars in the fleet – the latest, a Stratosphere, delivered just a few months ago. The Stratosphere gives drivers the highest levels of comfort available in the market place including a cab that allows you to stand up and walk through to the sleeper compartment, air-conditioning, extra insulation and a spring mattress to guarantee a peaceful and restful night’s sleep. “You just can’t fault the new Stratospheres. For cab comfort and accessibility nothing compares. The sleeper area is just so spacious and the fittings are nothing short of superb,” Mick enthused. “Our drivers love the Western Stars too – I’ve never had one driver come back with any sort of complaint... and that’s

good for my business,” he added. All the trucks are fitted with Detroit engines. Mick prides himself on the excellent rapport he has with his drivers, most of whom he talks to on a daily basis whilst they are on the road, and this no doubt plays a crucial role in the ongoing success of Highland Haulage. Most recently Mick has dealt with Phil Salter at Westar and reports that he always gets a good result with all Westar personnel whether it be sales or service. “The important thing is that when we have had an issue with a truck it gets fixed and is back on the road quickly. I really can’t ask for any more,” Mick enthused. Another thing Mick loves about the Stars is the little features that come fitted as standard. “I love the fact that they come equipped with a socket to plug a fridge into. Over the years, Polyfoam Australia has diversified into a number of different product areas and expanded its product range. The company now services a broad number of industries including agriculture & aquaculture, general packaging, industrial & automotive, building & construction, science & medical, retail & leisure and custom moulding. Today the company has offices in Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales and Queensland.
“We actually recycle 120% of what we make which includes additional product that we obtain from other companies,” said Polyfoam Australia’s Victorian State Manager, Nick Tandy. “Used packages are recycled for use as pods or bricks in building construction, so from an environmental perspective it is a very friendly material,” he went on to say.
Polyfoam Australia is one of the largest converters of expanded polystyrene (EPS) in Australia, with expertise in expanded polypropylene (EPP), as well as vacuum and injection moulding of plastic. The company also manufactures a large range of extruded foamed polyethylene (PE) rolls and sheets. Produce packaging for vegetables and seafood is still the largest part of Polyfoam Australia’s business. The key advantage of polystyrene for produce packaging is the fact that it is lightweight and doesn’t bruise or damage the contents. It also offers outstanding thermal efficiency, negating the need for a refrigerated truck when transporting product from the supplier to the supermarket, offering significant cost savings for the operator. The beauty of the polystyrene product is that it is completely recyclable and Polyfoam Australia strives to lead the industry in social and environmental

Polyfoam Australia already had a number of MAN prime movers on its fleet for use on country runs and it was the excellent efficiency and reliability of those trucks that prompted Polyfoam management to look at another MAN to complement its range of rigid trucks that are used primarily on metropolitan runs. In addition to the truck fleet, Polyfoam Australia owner Bruce Pickett also operates an MAN in the form of a motor home. “We needed a rigid that could also tow a trailer, so the MAN TGL 12.250 fitted the bill perfectly,” said Nick. The MAN was purchased from Patterson Cheney Dandenong and Nick reports that the pre and post purchase experience was excellent. The truck was delivered in March this year and has already proven a good performer. “One of its best attributes to date has been the way it holds its speed across a variety of road conditions making it an easy truck
to drive – the cab comfort also comes in for high praise,” Nick added. Whilst drivers were initially skeptical of MAN’s 12 speed tipmatic transmission it has now garnered favour with all who drive it. “Drivers now love the auto transmission - they find it less stressful, especially in the stop start traffic they encounter,” Nick went on to say. Nick plans to take the truck back to Patterson Cheney for servicing. “We’re very strict on servicing vehicles according to the log book and we have a very strong view that a well maintained vehicle is going to be less costly in the long run,” said Nick. By purchasing Isuzu Extended Care, customers can extend the standard three-year factory warranty by a further two years (to a total of five years), covering their vehicle for up to 400,000 kilometres or 6,000 hours (depending on the model). In addition to the package, customers will also receive five years of cover under the Extended Isuzu Assist feature. Tony brings many years experience in the Road Transport Industry, including his most recent 6 year tenure as General Manager with a major refrigerated transport company. Prior to this Tony spent 15 years as an owner driver operating on interstate linehaul operations; experience which will be invaluable in dealing with past and future Patterson Cheney customers.
We are pleased to announce the appointment of Sales Consultant Sean Flaherty, who joined the Westar Derrimut team selling heavy trucks on April 30. Sean joins us from the Mercedes Benz Organisation, having worked at both national and local levels since 1998. Over that time Sean has built up a wealth of experience and brings with him a great passion for life and the job of selling trucks and building up customer relationships.
