natural de Caxias do Sul - cidade foco da imigração italiana no Rio Grande do Sul - a charmosa Luciane Scopel vem encantar a coluna de dezembro. A jovem de traços marcantes, olhos azuis e sombrancelhas torneadas, seguiu os passos dos antepassados italianos, e foi desbravar outras terras. Escolheu a "Terra do Tio Sam". Na bagagem, sonhos e desejos de aproveitar as oportunidades, conhecer novas culturas e aperfeiçoar a Língua Inglesa. No Brasil, além de estudar Relações Públicas na UCS (Universidade de Caxias do Sul), fez desfiles de moda e fotografou para campanhas de moda praia e lingerie. Já nos Estados Unidos, encantou jurados e público participando do concurso Miss Brasil-USA e classificou-se entre as três finalistas. A vontade de continuar os estudos sempre prevaleceu. "Essa é a garantia do meu futuro. Algo que ninguém pode tirar de mim." Por isso, Luciane dedica-se à faculdade de Business/Marketing no El Camino College, em Redondo Beach. Morando há sete anos em Los Angeles, Luciane trabalhou durante dois anos numa companhia americana de peças de avião. Segundo ela, um trabalho diferente, mas que desenvolveu seu Inglês e técnicas de venda. "No começo ficava meio perdida, mas depois valeu muito a experiência."

Mesmo sentindo-se realizada com o novo estilo de vida desde que mudou-se para os EUA, Luciane pensa em voltar a morar no Brasil. A saudade dói menos pois ela mora com a mãe e os dois irmãos. Esse é outro aspecto da sua vida em que ela observa equilíbrio morando na América. "Sou abençoada porque tenho eles junto de mim. Isso me dá forças todos os dias." Proﬁssionalmente, já sabe o que quer quando terminar a faculdade. Ela vai abrir seu próprio negócio, colocando em prática ensinamentos da faculdade. Por enquanto, ela divide o tempo entre os estudos e o trabalho como garçonete em um requintado restaurante chinês. "Tiro uma grana legal, conheço muitas pessoas e ainda me divirto!", ressalta.

The young with strong lines, blue eyes and raised eyebrows, followed in the footsteps of her Italian ancestor by taming other lands. She chose the "land of Uncle Sam." Packed in her luggage, were her dreams and desires to take advantage of the opportunities that would come, to get to know new cultures, and to perfect her English. In Brazil, in addition to studying Public Relations at UCS (University of Caixas do Sul), she was featured in fashion shows and photographed for beach and lingerie fashion ads. In the U.S., she has already enchanted judges and the public while participating in the Miss Brazil-USA competition where she was selected as one of three ﬁnalists. Her will to continue her studies always prevailed. "This is the guarantees of my future. Something that no one can take away from me." For this reason, Luciane dedicates herself to the Business/Marketing program at El Camino College, in Redondo Beach. In the seven years since she moved to Los Angeles, Luciane spent two of those years working in an American airplane parts company. According to her, it was a different kind of work than she was accustomed to, but she developed her English and sales techniques. "In the beginning I was half lost, but in the end I valued the experience very much," she explains. Even though she was felling realized with her new life style since she moved to United States, Luciane thinks about returning to live in Brazil. The homesickness she suffers is lessened by the fact that she lives here with her mother and two brothers. This is another aspect of her life that brings balance to her life in America. Luciane states, "I am blessed because I have them by my side. This gives me strength every day."

Professionally, she already knows what she wants to do when she ﬁnishes college. She plans to open her own business, putting into practice the lessons she received in school. For now, she divides her time between her studies and her work as a waitress in a fancy Chinese restaurant. "I make a good living, meet many people and I am still able to have fun," she explains.

The history of Luciane joins the one of millions of Brazilians who choose America as destination to work or to study, waiting spoon the fruits of this battle. Um gaúcho fazendo Videogames nos EUA By Raquel "Keka" Diefenbach

O universo dos videogames fascina meninos de todas as idades. Agora, fazer desse mundo de fantasia seu "ganha- pão" não é um sonho? O gaúcho Alex Bortoluzzi é hoje um dos nomes mais respeitados da Treyarch, parte do grupo Activision, empresa que já produziu vários jogos famosos como Spiderman 1 e 2, Tony Hawk, Shrek 2, Doom, X-Men e True Crime, e tem escritórios espalhados pelo mundo. Um apaixonado por videogames desde adolescente, Alex reunia os amigos em Porto Alegre, sua cidade natal, para jogarem durante madrugadas inteiras com os computadores ligados em rede (um verdadeiro "projeto científico" formado por um emaranhado de fios e monitores, que cada um levava de sua própria casa). Durante a faculdade, começou a pesquisar sobre o mercado mundial de games. Um completo autodidata, aprendeu a trabalhar com diversos softwares de animação, textura, modelagem e visualização enquanto administrava uma empresa de computação gráfica com mais dois sócios. Ele começou sua carreira internacional quando conheceu um artista de jogos em 1995, pela Internet. Em 1997, foi convidado para vir a Los Angeles trabalhar numa pequena empresa de jogos. Não demorou para que seu talento fosse descoberto: no ano seguinte, foi contratado pela Treyarch. "Quando cheguei aqui foi um período difícil,

sentia saudades da família, dos amigos e da namorada, Tatiane. Tive que passar 5 meses sozinho, estudando e trabalhando muito para me acostumar com o ritmo e estilo de vida americano." Esse choque cultural o levou a mudar vários hábitos, inclusive a alimentação: "No Brasil, eu estava acostumado a ter duas horas de almoço. Na minha indústria, não é incomum comer na frente do computador enquanto se trabalha. Além disso, trabalhar 12 a 16 horas por dia, meses a ﬁo, também é normal. Mesmo assim, estou plenamente satisfeito e feliz com a escolha que ﬁz. Sempre tive fascínio por videogames e realizei um grande sonho aqui nos EUA". Hoje, esse brasileiro talentoso faz parte de um mundo onde os negócios giram em torno de grandes investimentos, e que está em constante ascendência. E o conselho dele para quem mora nos EUA: "Desenvolva seus talentos, trabalhe duro e seja correto que o seu trabalho será reconhecido." O universo dos videogames fascina meninos de todas as idades. The gaucho (native of South Brazil) Alex Bortoluzzi is one of the most respected names at Treyarch, a division of Activision, the company with ofﬁces around the world that produced the famous games Spiderman 1 and 2, Tony Hawk, Shrek 2, Doom, X-Men, and True Crime.

meeting a video game artist on the Internet. In 1997, he was invited to come to Los Angeles to work in a small video game company. He did not hesitate to show his talent, and in the following year he was hired by Treyarch. "When I arrived here it was a difﬁcult period," he explains, "I missed my family, friends and my girlfriend, Tatiane. I had to spend ﬁve months alone, studying and working for me to get accustomed to the rhythm and American lifestyle."

His passion for video games traces back to his adolescence, when Alex would get together with friends in Porto Alegre, his city, to play computer games on the net until dawn (which was a true "scientiﬁc project" put together by a mix of wires and monitors that led back to each boy’s home). During his college years, he started to research the worldwide video game market. Completely self taught, he learned to work with diverse animation software, texture, modeling and visualization, while managing a computer graphics company with two partners.

The culture shock caused him to change some of his habits, even with regard to eating: "In Brazil, I was accustomed to two hours of lunch. In my industry, it is not uncommon to eat in front of the computer while you work. Also, to work the 12 to 16 hours a day, month after month, is also normal here. With this, I am fully satisﬁed and happy with the choice that I made. I was attracted to video games and I followed through on my great dream here in the U.S."

Recheio e Cobertura:

2 latas de creme de leite 5 colheres (sopa) de açúcar Canela e nozes para decorar

Modo de preparar:

Separe as gemas e bata as claras em neve, bata as gemas com o açúcar e adicione o óleo aos poucos e continue batendo. Peneire a farinha com o fermento e a maizena. Envolva as nozes. Misture as claras no preparado de gemas, alternando com a mistura de farinhas. Unte e enfarinhe uma forma, despeje a massa e leve ao forno pré-aquecido por 40 minutos. Desenforme, deixe esfriar e corte o bolo no meio. Para o recheio e cobertura: bata o creme de leite e depois de ﬁrme, adicione o açúcar e bata mais um pouco. Recheie o bolo com o chantilly, sobreponha a outra parte e cubra com o restante. Decore com a canela e as nozes e sirva bem gelado. 26 22

Cake:

6 Eggs 1 1/2 cups of sugar 2 tablespoons of oil 1 1/2 cups of wheat ﬂour 1 tablespoon of baking powder 1 tablespoon of corn starch 100 grams of crushed walnuts Butter and wheat ﬂour to grease

Filling and topping:

2 cans of sour cream 5 tablespoons of sugar Cinnamon and walnuts for decoration

How to prepare:

Separate the yolks and mix the egg whites until it becomes meringe. Mix the yolks with sugar and add oil gradually as you keep mixing. Strain the wheat flour, baking powder, and the corn starch, and add the walnuts to the mix. Mix the egg whites with the yolks and then add the flour. Grease and add flour to the tray. Put the entire mix into the pre-heated oven for 40 minutes. Remove it from the tray, let it cool and then cut it horizontally in half through the middle. For the filling and topping: Mix the sour cream and after is consistent , add sugar and mix a little more. Fill the cake with chantilly, then place the other part of the cake on top, then cover the cake with the rest of filling and topping mix. Decorate with cinnamon and walnuts, and serve it cold.

O baiano, representante da história cultural do Brasil, nos EUA Ele veio da terra da grapiúna, do cacau e do acarajé. É conterrâneo de Castro Alves, Glauber Rocha e Jorge Amado. Eduardo Mendonça veio da terra que exporta talentos e sábios poetas. Nasceu e foi criado no bairro da Liberdade, berço da cultura baiana em Salvador. Apaixonado por música e arte desde criança, começou a carreira artística cantando em bares, clubes e trios elétricos. A primeira apresentação profissional aconteceu aos 14 anos na TV Itapuã, na Bahia. Ali, teve certeza de que sua vida seria direcionada à arte. Descendente de família real africana, Eduardo mantém o título hereditário de Mamabeka ("profeta da corte"), documentado pelo Instituto Geográfico e Histórico da Bahia. No Brasil, além de seguir cantando, ele dava aulas de Educação Artística em escolas públicas. Os anos de experiência na licenciatura trouxeram oportunidades como a direção da "Escola Parque", a maior escola pública da América Latina, localizada na Bahia e com, aproximadamente, 9 mil alunos. Eduardo fixou residência nos Estados Unidos há 9 anos, e tudo aconteceu por acaso. Chegou em Seattle com o propósito de ministrar um workshop de percussão. Mas a recepção foi tão calorosa que resolveu ficar e começar um trabalho ligado à cultura brasileira. Lá, começou a carreira como vocalista e diretor musical da Banda Voou. Depois, integrou a banda Steel Band Bakra Batá. Fundou o "Show Brazil!", um fabuloso espetáculo que envolve músicos e dançarinos profissionais brasileiros e americanos. O show tem duração de 45 minutos e abre com percussão de Ijexá (ritmo afro-brasileiro trazido pelos escravos africanos), e segue para o Baião, Maculelê, Capoeira e finaliza nos ritmos do samba, galope e samba-reggae. O músico viaja com o Show Brazil! por inúmeras cidades dos EUA. Apresentou-se no Carnaval Brasileiro de Vancouver, Canadá, e no Bumbershoot Festival, em Seattle como convidado do grupo Olodum. Teve a honra de cantar para o ex-Presidente da África do Sul, Nelson Mandela, e para o Papa João Paulo II, além de participar de um vídeo-documentário para Paul Simon, na Bahia. Perguntado sobre o sentimento patriota em relação ao Brasil, ele se prontifica: "Amo meu país. E acredito que nós somos os principais responsáveis pela educação de nossas crianças. Eu pretendo dividir residência entre EUA e Brasil, dedicando a estrutura do ShowBrazil! às criancas com talento, mas sem oportunidade na Bahia, que sonham em desenvolver seus dons. Sei que é pouco, mas é o que está ao meu alcance."
