CHAMBER VIEW

The Chamber Means Business Chamber President Owen Gleadall reflects on a successful President’s Ball and assesses the year ahead.

Firstly, I want to thank all those who attended the President’s Charity Ball at Magna last May. I think it lived up to its reputation and provided a great night with good food and excellent entertainment. Having the ‘Man of Steel’ present was quite a coup and he attracted a huge amount of attention, hopefully raising the profile of this exciting project. We had over 450 people attending this year which is a new record and I think reflects the high esteem in which this event is held in our local area. Our next major event is the annual Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards on Friday, 18th October and we are looking for entries in all categories. Last year was exceptional in the number and quality of entries, so let’s maintain that high standard and show the world just how good business is here. Make sure you put this date in your diary and join us to celebrate the successes of our local businesses. The Chamber continues to develop and has recently undergone a major restructure following the Board’s decision to reduce our involvement with publicly funded contracts. In the early days these were a great source of revenue as we developed and supplied many programmes for the support of businesses from new start-ups to existing organisations. However, with the demise of Business Link, Yorkshire Forward and an overall lack of government funding in general, it became apparent that the match funding required to make these contracts viable no longer exists. On that basis, the Chamber took the decision that we would concentrate on core activities covering membership and support services, export documentation, policy and representation and other areas of local economic support. Whilst this inevitably led to a number of redundancies, it also gave us real opportunities

Patrons

for development and growth. We now have a totally committed team, located both at Genesis Park in Rotherham and with a town-centre base at The Core in Barnsley, working together to make a real difference to business in our area. Our strapline of ‘The Chamber Means Business’ is our key focus, and we intend to grow and develop relationships with all major stakeholders across the region over the coming months. Our involvement in the newly formed Sheffield City Region Chambers Group also gives us direct links with the LEP and ensures a positive and influential involvement in the economic development of our region. Times may be challenging for some time to come, but we firmly believe that with all the changes we have made we are in a very strong position to provide the breadth and quality of services that our members demand and deserve.

A Night Of Pride For Chamber At Charity Ball Local charities are to benefit from much-needed funds raised by business people from across Barnsley and Rotherham, digging deep and showing their generosity at this year’s annual Chamber Charity Ball. Thousands of pounds were raised at the Ball which took place at the Magna Centre on Saturday, 11th May 2013, for the President’s chosen charities, Shiloh Rotherham, Barnsley Churches Drop-In Project and the Barnsley and Rotherham Street Pastors. Commenting on the impact the monies raised will have, Jonathan Lang, Shiloh’s Operations Manager and Trustee, said: “It is a privilege for all of us involved in trying to change people’s lives for the better that the Chamber should deem us worthy charities they wish to support. “The timing could not be better, as the number of needy adults coming through our doors has been rising significantly since the turn of the year. We have continued, and

always will to rise to the challenge, and the Chamber’s backing will enable us to go on taking our service provision in our stride.” Guests were greeted by a model of the proposed 125-foot sculpture – “Man of Steel”, a fitting representative for this year’s Yorkshire Pride theme event. The fundraising activities included raffles and auctions, while the Gillian Banks Theatre School wowed over 400 guests by performing scenes showing the region’s cultural prowess in sport, music and art. Guests were taken on a journey celebrating the region’s mining and steel heritage, and then travelled into its future technological and manufacturing excellence. Chamber President, Owen Gleadall said, “I

am very pleased with the level of support my first charity ball has received - with over 400 people attending. However, no event of this type can ever happen without sponsorship and I want to thank all those that donated so generously. “My chosen charities are set to benefit greatly from the various initiatives on the night and I know the money raised will be put to good use in our local communities. With such a great show I am already thinking of how we can better it in 2014 – watch this space!” Local companies can still make a donation to the Chamber President’s Charity Fund – call 01709 386 200 for more information.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Rotherham Nursery Is ‘Outstanding’ Pollywiggle Day Nursery, Treeton, has recently been judged as ‘Outstanding’, the highest grading given by Ofsted, the body who regulates all children’s nurseries. Pollywiggle Day Nursery is now one of only three other private day nurseries to receive this outstanding rating across the whole of the Rotherham borough.

“It is wonderful that Ofsted have recognised the hard work and commitment we place on helping every child to reach their full learning potential.”

During the inspection, Ofsted (the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills)  examined three key areas; the wellbeing of the children, how well the children’s needs are met and the effectiveness of the management. All 3 areas at Pollywiggle Day Nursery were judged as worthy of this highest level of rating.

Kirsty added “We don’t advertise the nursery - we rely simply on our parents telling other parents about the quality childcare we offer and that their children are happy and settled at Pollywiggle. We work closely with our parents in partnership to make sure every child progresses well, becoming a confident and independent individual.”

Kirsty Hanberry, Business Manager at Pollyiggle Day Nursery said “We are extremely proud of this achievement. Our Early Years Practitioners work so hard to make sure that every day is special for the children we look after.

Since receiving their outstanding rating Pollywiggle Day Nursery have also been approached by another Rotherham nursery to act as a mentor to discuss their experience and share what it takes to reach this achievement.

Solar Europa And Chamber Develop Business Package

Solar Europa and the Chamber have worked together to develop a package for businesses for which the consumption of environmentally friendly electricity will bring much needed long-term cost savings. Solar Europa provides the solar PV system free of charge to businesses. In exchange for the free system, Solar Europa requires the business to enter an agreement to consume the Green Electricity generated by the system. This Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) is for a period of 20 years saving up to 50 per cent of grid prices and will not only secure a material reduction in utility based electricity costs but will also protect against energy price inflation (historically at least more than 3 per cent above RPI and rising) as a result of linking increases to RPI only. The electricity costs are agreed at the outset, on signing the PPA and incorporated into the contract. The contract is portable so should a member decide to sell its business or move premises the new owners can also benefit from low cost electricity. The UK has now introduced the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) which is a direct business tax calculated by reference to the energy that a business consumes and the carbon created in producing that energy. For every ton of emissions produced by Industry in consuming carbon creating energy the CRC is charged at £16 per ton. This tax could prove to be ruinous to every size of business over 25 to 30 years. By generating renewable energy from solar PV this reduces the consumption of electricity created from carbon creating sources so it is not only the cost of energy bills that is reduced but also the amount of tax payable under the CRC scheme – a double saving for members to enjoy. Chamber Member Visits Prime Minister Early in May the British Chambers of Commerce accompanied fourteen of their members to Downing Street, to engage in an honest and open conversation with the Prime Minister about issues facing UK businesses. David Hawkins of Barnsley based Solar Europa, one of Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce patrons was part of the lucky group.

for discussion centred on international trade and exports, and what more the government can do to support existing and potential exporting businesses.

The meeting was an opportunity for Chambers of Commerce and their members to educate senior officials within government about the vital work being carried out by businesses every day. Themes

As Chambers, we believe that exporting overseas will play a major part in unlocking the growth potential of the UK, and if we are to win the ’global race’ that the Prime Minister regularly speaks of, we need to be

doing much more to help companies break into new international markets. Solar Europa are working with the British Chambers of Commerce to offer members free solar panels. The £100 million scheme was piloted in the local area and supported by Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber, its success has led to arrangements for a national rollout.

Chambers Fly The Aviation Flag In an event organised and hosted by Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce and Doncaster Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Heathrow airport, many issues were discussed around the UK’s aviation debate. More than 20 businesses took part in a two hour long debate about the need for extra capacity in the UK to keep pace with other hub regions across Europe and the middle east. Heathrow’s own estimates put the value of lost trade to the UK at £14 billion which would be very useful in times of economic stagnation and would aid economic recovery. Aviation also acts as a catalyst for businesses across all sectors, which are facilitated by greater connectivity. This concept of

connectivity includes not only the number of destinations served, their importance to business, and the frequency of flights, but is also about the ease with which passengers can find the route they want, at a time that suits their needs. Gareth Owen, partner at hlw Keeble Hawson Solicitors and board member of Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber said: “The statistics are compelling – UK businesses trade up to 20 times more with emerging markets where there is a direct daily flight compared

with those markets where there is no direct or a less frequent services. “South Yorkshire has a global reputation for its manufacturing innovation and the growth of businesses could be hampered by poor air links. “We must keep pace with the creation of hub regions across the rest of Europe and ensure that the Sheffield City Region secures a proportion of that £14 billion worth of lost international business.”

Young People In Rotherham ‘Get Ready’ For Work With The Help Of Gala Tent Five young people from Rotherham have been given a unique insight into the world of work by Gala Tent, one of the UK’s leading designers and manufacturers of marquees and gazebos. The company jumped at the chance to help unemployed people between the ages of 18 and 22 prepare for the world of work, having been approached by Rotherham Youth Enterprise, who were delivering the Job Centre Plus initiative, for help with the ‘Get Ready’ programme. As part of the eight week long programme, Gala Tent’s managing director Jason Mace ran a workshop at My Place in Rotherham, providing valuable advice on employment, interviews and enterprise. Jason talked about his experiences of setting up Gala Tent, providing a useful insight into the highs and lows of starting a business. Jason also offered advice on preparing for interviews and employer’s expectations

of employees in the workplace, alongside graphic designer Kathrine Furniss from Gala Tent, who gave the group tips on producing a good CV which leaves a lasting impression on potential employers. The young people were then set an enterprise challenge, with all profits raised going to local charity, Rotherham Cancer Care Centre. Rotherham Cancer Care Centre loaned £150 to the young people who set about organising two events held at Rotherham Street Market and Parkgate Shopping centre. Gala Tent supported the Parkgate event by loaning the young people a marquee which would provide a professional shop front for their business.

Jason Mace, Managing Director of Gala Tent said: “I was delighted to get involved with helping to inspire young people into being entrepreneurial and motivating them in their search for employment. I was really impressed with the hard work and enterprise of the young people involved in the programme. They took on board the advice and guidance we gave them in the workshop and made a real success of their two day business venture, raising over £500 for a good cause. I wish the group all the best in their search for a career and hope that a few of them may even be inspired to pursue their own business ventures.” Jackie Frost, Enterprise Projects Manager at Rotherham Youth Enterprise, said: “Gala Tent’s support of the ‘Get Ready’ programme helped the young people involved to raise £568.14 for Rotherham Cancer Care Centre, on top of paying back the initial £150 loan. The event at Parkgate would not have been possible without the help of Gala Tent as their marquee provided protection from the bitterly cold weather. The marquee made an impressive pop up shop and, along with the workshop delivered by Jason Mace and Kathrine Furniss, it inspired real confidence in the young people we were working with.”

Every Cloud Has A Silver Lining Cloud, Cloud, Cloud…It’s everywhere. Every time we talk about IT someone brings up the term cloud, cloud services or cloud technologies. But do we need to keep talking about it as if it’s something new different or unusual? Surely it is now becoming ‘the norm’ and businesses of all shapes and sizes are benefiting from cloud technologies? Companies now fully understand that the term cloud computing simply means computing resources delivered as a service, using the Internet. We use this format in our personal lives all the time (Skype, Dropbox etc) and businesses are realising that they too can gain from the advantages that cloud solutions provide. Let’s face it, as the next generation comes into the workplace they will expect nothing less than to be using IT services delivered over the internet. It may also help to foster a more entrepreneurial spirit as new businesses can now be set up with reduced start-up costs and information accessed almost anywhere and on any device. For a small business, using cloud technologies can diminish their upfront

For larger businesses who are looking for greater mobility, agility and better data management in an increasingly dynamic workplace, cloud solutions can provide all this and more.

Late Payments Remain A Problem Business

Following on from recent headlines about the impact of late payments on businesses in the region, the Chamber conducted a short poll of businesses to measure the extent to which this is having on businesses.

Policy & External Affairs Committee

Dominic Beck – External Affairs Executive discusses the impact of late payments on businesses. When asked what proportions of payments were received late – Nearly a half of all businesses asked said around a third of all payments were received late. This indicates a turbulent market place where the extent to which late payments are a problem for your business, could be dependent upon what sector you are operating in or the size of the customers you are doing business with.

to help with cash-flow and simply because they can’t pay suppliers until customers have paid them. This is not a surprise in our findings and is indicative of the culture that is apparent in some industries, which in these difficult times is more prevalent. However, nearly half of responders said that they do not pay suppliers late at all. So there is no one explanation.

Businesses were asked what impact the economic downturn had on how promptly they get paid – 43% of people who responded said no difference whilst 26% said more businesses are paying later than before the economic downturn. Again, very mixed results are evidence of a fragmented economy whereby some businesses are feeling the pinch more profoundly than others.

These results all point to an economy where no one rule of payments applies and that sectoral and industry variables will have more of an influence on whether businesses pay or get paid late. The stagnant nature of the economy is having more of an effect on business confidence, which is making businesses stretch the payment time of paying bills because there is no confidence that debtors will pay them on time.

The Chamber is currently looking at how we engage with members, partners and government through the external affairs and policy functions. We are currently seeking the input of members as part of this process and your ideas and suggestions would be welcomed. At the moment we have a Transport Working Group and a Red Tape Working Group and we are hoping to incorporate and cover some of the other areas we are asked to consider as a Chamber, such as finance, construction and business crime. This is an ongoing review of all our policy activities and the views of the members will ultimately shape the future of this aspect of what the Chamber offers. If you would like to be involved in attending potential future meetings of a Chamber Policy & External Affairs Committee, please email Dominic Beck on dominic.beck@brchamber.co.uk.

TIPS FOR BUSINESSES

Recipe For Success Writing your business award entry can be time consuming, frustrating and a little daunting so taking some time away from the office to plan, prepare and learn some top tips will be time well spent. Business awards give you the opportunity to show your competitors, customers, prospects and local community the best your business has to offer whether this is a service, product, team or individual. Receiving recognition and third party endorsement by winning or even just being shortlisted, can provide you with a platform to grow your business and increase your turnover.

3. What have you done which is truly outstanding in your business in the last 12 months?

Key areas to consider when entering business awards:

6. Time – don’t underestimate how much time is needed to source your information, write, re-write, double check and prepare your supporting materials before submitting the final entry.

1. Choose your category carefully to ensure it reflects your business objectives and supports your future business ambitions 2. Decide what you hope to gain out of entering business awards – is it just the win or can you gain something else from the experience?

4. Who has the knowledge to provide you with the relevant information, facts and figures? 5. Do you have someone in your team who can write the entry or would you benefit from external resources to assist you?

7. How will you integrate entering the awards into your marketing strategy? Awards are a fantastic marketing tool if used in the right way.

Data Protection – My Top 10 Tips Following my article last month entitled ‘Expert Advice in tackling Cyber Risk’ where I provided a series of questions to help you manage the risk to your information, this month I thought I’d follow-up with my ‘Top 10’ tips for better data protection. 1. Never write passwords down or use easy to guess passwords. 2. Never share any of your passwords with anyone – ever. 3. Avoid opening attachments or responding to suspicious emails or clicking on any links within suspicious emails. 4. Never circumvent security controls or restrictions applied to corporate computer systems. They are designed to protect you and your corporate information. 5. Never leave sensitive documents around the office, in meeting rooms or public places. Cross-shred sensitive documents if no longer needed. 6. Avoid leaving documents containing

sensitive information on display on desks or in vehicles – lock them away or move them out of view if left in a vehicle. 7. Never leave removable media (CDs/DVDs, unencrypted USB Sticks) on display on desks or in vehicles – lock them away or move them out of view if left in a vehicle 8. Never email sensitive information from your corporate email account to your personal email account. 9. Think twice before disclosing your work or personal details on any Social Media sites. 10. SUPPORT FOR BUSINESSES

UK Steel Enterprise Provides More Funding For Rotherham Start-up Businesses UK Steel Enterprise has launched a new scheme to support business start-ups in Rotherham with a funding pot of £25,000, of which £15,000 will be targeted at young entrepreneurs up to 30 years of age. UK Steel Enterprise is working in partnership with Rotherham Investment & Development Office (RIDO) and Rotherham Youth Enterprise to promote the new Kickstart Fund, which can provide a combination of loans and grants. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Steel. Its Kickstart Fund provides grants of up to £500 to start-up businesses to purchase essential equipment and or services that can get them trading. Its main investment fund provides business finance in amounts from £25,000 up to £750,000 to more established companies in South Yorkshire and other areas affected by changes in the steel industry.

“The funding I got from UK Steel made all the difference to starting a new business. Instead of using my old DIY kit to make the made to order vivariums, I now have a professional set of tools which make all the difference to the finished products. My clients come from all over the UK and each one wants an individual look and finish to show off their reptiles. No two vivariums look the same as I add all sorts of finishes – some with glitter, some painted – anything to stop them looking bog-standard,” said Ben Taylor. Keith Williams of UK Steel Enterprise says Ben has shown just how quickly a business

can take off with good marketing: “Ben has only just started but by cleverly using social media like Facebook to promote his business he has already secured a good level of work with orders coming in from Scotland to Essex as well as from local customers in South Yorkshire. Our aim with the Kickstart Fund is to support people like Ben who have the drive to be successful.” Anyone wanting to make an application to the Kickstart Fund should call Rotherham Youth Enterprise on 0114 269 5053.

Keith Williams, Regional Manager for UK Steel Enterprise says he is looking forward to building on the success of previous Kickstart funds in Rotherham. “Our experience of supporting new-start businesses in Rotherham shows that relatively small sums of funding can make all the difference when it comes to starting up. Applicants can get support from our partners at RIDO and Rotherham Youth Enterprise which helps them with business planning and mentoring through the early stages. We’ve helped over 200 people start a business in Rotherham since 2009 and this new fund should see even more new businesses launching and becoming sustainable.” One recipient of Kickstart funding is Ben Taylor, a young Rotherham reptile enthusiast who has set up a new business manufacturing funky vivariums. He has received support from a combination of Rotherham Youth Enterprise, RIDO’s Business Centres and UK Steel Enterprise. With the help of a £500 grant from UK Steel Enterprise’s Kickstart Fund he was able to buy specialist tools and stock that put his enterprise on a far more professional footing.

Staying Ahead Of The Times Running a business isn’t as simple as ringing the till at the end of each day; it’s so much more than that. So when you run an Antiques shop, how do you stay ahead of the times in business? Chris Hamby of Hamby’s Rotherham does just that. Taking on an apprentice has been a real eye opener for me. Our first apprentice in the Antiques Shop made such an impact on the way we work, taking on additional responsibilities above his job description that we decided to recruit a second apprentice to work in our Footwear Shop.

Hamby’s is a family run business which dates back to 1961, but owner Chris Hamby has not rest on his laurels. Originally a credit drapers, supplying clothing, footwear, furniture and decorating supplies to villages and ran by his parents, Hamby’s has received an overhaul over the last 50 years, moving into new markets to offer customers what they really want. Chris not only runs a successful footwear store, but also an antiques shop, both based in the heart of Rotherham Town Centre. His model is a unique one – he isn’t afraid to try new things. “I suppose you could say I’m an innovative type of retailer, in that I don’t just want to focus my business down one route, I want to try new things and be the best I can be in several areas. Both businesses challenge me in different ways, but my passion drives me to ensure both are a success. To me it is vital to stay ahead of the game, and I have looked into different initiatives over the years to ensure I do just that. Last year we

contacted an Account Manager at The Source to help us develop the business further and grow our workforce. The Source had some fantastic suggestions including WorldHost customer service training and recruiting an Apprentice. I had no idea how recruiting an apprentice could benefit me, but it has been phenomenal.

My best piece of advice for running a successful retail business is to never stand still. Don’t be reactive, stay ahead of the times and you will succeed. It could be anything from expanding into new markets, utilising different initiatives to grow your business or sharing best practice with neighbouring retailers; it’s all valuable for growth.” George Elliott, Account Manager at The Source said: “Chris Hamby is so enthusiastic about growing his business, recruiting an Apprentice was the ideal step. Chris’s Apprentices have made astounding progress and are a real asset to his team. Hamby’s is a shining example of a proactive employer that is keen to try new things to expand his business.”

The New High Street Marketing Tool ShoPING is revolutionising the high street, enabling shoppers to find out about the latest deals and offers delivered straight to their mobile phone whilst they shop. It allows retail businesses of all sizes to directly target shoppers near by. The application is free to shoppers enabling them to choose from a menu of stores/ items they would like to receive latest offers from. When a user is within proximity of a ShoPING retailer, the consumer will get an instant notification or offer straight to their pocket indicating the stores promotion and location. ShoPING has been created with a clear aim: ‘to rejuvenate the high street shopping market and encourage consumers to benefit from the offers available in their surrounding area. Every user will have their own unique ShoPING experience.’ Andrew Claypole, Director of ShoPING, explains further: “our idea was in response to the current economic climate and the

continuing increase in internet shopping which are affecting high street shop sales. “ShoPING allows retail businesses, regardless of size or trade, to target potential customers in their local area by posting offers direct to their phones with a click of a button and in turn allows shoppers to receive offers they actually want - it’s a win-win situation”. ShoPING is designed so that each retailer can post an offer, which will be received by potential customers immediately. Retailers have full control on what offers they wish to send and when an offer expires. They also receive key analytical data on how well their ShoPING offers are working, from initial view rates, open rates to click rates. When ShoPING was launched it instantly

created a spark with retailers and shoppers in South Yorkshire. The shops started signing up in the first two weeks, there were 190+ downloads of the app in week 1 (iPhone & Android). As well as downloads, it had magnificent social network explosion. The plans are to move across England with the support from other Towns/Cities so that ShoPING will become the new shopping app and retail marketing tool to boost the high street economy. For more information about signing a business up to ShoPING contact the Chamber on 01709 386200 and quote ‘Retail Membership’

Sporting Chance For Barnsley’s Young People Young people who are not in education or employment are to be encouraged into sport thanks to a new scheme in Barnsley. Not-for-profit company Team Activ has teamed up with Barnsley Council and Barnsley College to launch the scheme, which targets teenagers aged 16-18 who are known as NEETS - Not in Employment, Education or Training. The pilot Sportivate scheme, funded by Sport England, will help 12 teenagers from the Dearne area learn how to kayak at Dearneside Leisure Centre then support them to continue playing sport after the course has ended. Jude Langdon, network manager at Team Activ, said: “We chose kayaking as it was something a bit different to the traditional football and netball and it’s quite a unisex sport. It’s also fully inclusive for young people with a disability and BME groups. “We wanted a sport that is easily accessible after the course has ended so the young people can carry on doing it by themselves.

It was very much about finding a sport in their local area which they could easily continue with.”

people have attended every week, they will receive two awards – the Kayak award and a Sports Leaders UK Day Certificate.

The six-week course will help individuals to develop skills such as confidence, selfesteem, communication, team work and leading others.

The kayak award will allow young people to hire or access kayaks at various outdoor water facilities. They will also receive membership to Manvers Waterfront to encourage them to keep participating in sport and physical activity.

Becoming Chamber members in 2007, father and son partnership Pete and Chris ThorntonSmith of The BPAS Group from Wickersley were seen around local and national events providing exceptional sound and lighting. However, now it’s time for a change of direction and a special offer to Chamber members. Chris now works for fellow members Transmitta Limited in Chesterfield as Head of Audio and this allowed Pete to switch the emphasis of the business. He grew his role as an advisor to local SMEs and in April 2013 took the final step and rebranded the business to PeterTS.com. He works in three distinct areas:

• Small Business Advisor Take the opportunity to chat with a respected network of time-served Business Advisors and challenge him and his colleagues and to resolve the issues you can see in your business

• ISO 9001 Support Centre

Pete has been a long time advocate of using video in marketing and so, to mark the occasion, he is offering Chamber members the opportunity to cut a short video at his Moorgate premises in Rotherham.

As a Quality Management Specialist let him show you how to lighten the load of that quality system as it all clicks into place be it ISO 9001 or AS9100

Seeing yourself in the picture has never been simpler. Pete will guide you through the process and tell you the steps to follow. He will even edit and optimise the video for you then upload it and add it to your chosen page.

• Social Profile Builder

Bookings for this offer close at the end of August so pick up the phone now and ring Pete on 07732 300686 or send that email to pete@peterts.com and be sure to mention the Bulletin.

A Healthy Smile – Easy As 1, 2, 3 According to the British Dental Health Foundation, there are just three simple steps to maintaining good oral health. Following National Smile Month, the foundation issued the simple three-step reminder. This includes brushing teeth for two minutes twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, cutting back on sugary drinks and foods and visiting the dentist regularly.

UK workers who don’t have access to a dental plan through their employer would like cover to be available to them.

said: “Employers regularly tell us they value the dental cover in their plans, not only as an employee benefit, but also to help them control the amount of time taken off for unplanned dental emergencies. “The benefit helps to provide more choice for people seeking treatment and care, and eases concerns about paying dental bills.

But according to the foundation, a quarter of adults don’t brush their teeth twice a day – worrying figures, given that people who only brush once a day are a third more likely to develop tooth decay.

“And, with poor oral health linked to a number of serious health issues such as strokes, coronary heart disease and diabetes, it is an issue for employees and employers alike to take seriously and act upon.”

Meanwhile, visiting the dentist at least once a year reduces the risk of tooth decay by 60 per cent. However, the foundation has also found that many of us put off visiting the dentist because of money worries, with nearly a fifth (19 per cent) delaying their treatment due to the cost and more than a quarter (26 per cent) admitting price has an effect on the type of dental treatment they opt for.

Westfield Health’s Chamber Primary Health Plan, which is available to all members of Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce, includes a dental benefit and provides a set amount of money back towards the cost of NHS or private dental treatment.

Research by YouGov also revealed a third of

Westfield’s Executive Director Paul Shires

The plan also offers a dental trauma benefit, which gives employees money back towards the cost of treatment carried out as a result of accidental injury to their teeth. For more information about the Chamber Plan, visit www.westfieldhealth.com/ chamber or call 0845 602 1629, available 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.

This figure demonstrates that employers have an obligation to look at ways to reduce the risk of injury in the workplace and also promote a safe and healthy work environment. Working with Maguire Training, the Chamber are launching a series of modules aimed at raising awareness of health and safety issues for employers, employees and those that are self-employed. The initial modules that will be available include: • H & S – The Basics • Risk Management • COSHH

• Environmental Awareness • Fire Safety • H & S in the Office • H & S for Home Workers • Manual Handling • Slips, Trips & Falls • Lone Working
