CHAMBER VIEW

Deputy Chief Executive’s

Foreword

It has been a couple of months since I took on my role as Deputy Chief Executive and I can already say that it has been fantastic and I’m looking forward to further developing the role over this coming year. I have had 2 great years managing Chamber Skills Solutions (CSS), and 3 years previous to that working within the membership team. These past 5 years have been very enjoyable, it’s a pleasure to work for the Chamber and with our members to develop their business and staff. As an organisation we are a voice for business, both locally and at a national level and we are apolitical. We can support and advise around lobbying, we can connect people and we are there to signpost all the amazing services that are available, both within our own membership, as well as around our region. Our Membership offering is growing from strength to strength with the team now fully established. Testament to the hard work of the entire staff members, we were finalists at the British Chamber of Commerce Awards in November within the ‘Excellence in Membership Services’ category. It was a very proud moment to see our logo up alongside some of the largest operating Chambers in the country with our work within our region being recognised nationally. Our training arm, CSS, is proving to be highly successful. 2018 saw us introduce new training options including CIPS qualifications, funded CMI Management programmes, as well as niche mechanical courses around Pneumatics

and Hydraulics, enhancing the already established training packages currently on offer. We do try and meet the needs of all our members - if you do need help, please ask us, it is a two-way thing and you also have the Membership Survey to complete, which closes on 31st January. The survey doesn’t take long, so please air your views, it can really help.

The Quarterly Economic Review too is important to complete, and if you wish to hear the Quarter 4 (November) results, we’re holding a breakfast event on the 17th of this month. The year ahead is somewhat unknown with ‘Brexit’ on the horizon. Please be assured, we are here to advise and provide as much guidance and information as possible, so please sign up to our E-newsletter and attend events to keep up to date with the latest developments. In the meantime, we will be focussing on several key events on the calendar, including International Women’s Day, the Quiz night for our Charity of the Year - Molly’s Fund and the Business Awards later in the year. All the best for a great and successful 2019.

CHAMBER NEWS

All Change in the Chamber Boardroom Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce is celebrating a record year of success after all three areas of the member-led organisation recorded significant growth during the past twelve months. The impressive performance of the organisation was shared with members at its AGM which saw the organisation post its best financial results since the Barnsley and Rotherham Chambers merged in 2007.

our Chamber, when the board meets again, there will be more women sitting around the table than men. I think this speaks volumes about how far we have come as an organisation. “Over the past twelve months we have seen all areas of our business enjoy significant growth and this is largely due to the efforts and dedication of our staff and Chamber members who have given up their time to support our work through our member representation council and working groups.

Driven by a growing membership and increased demand for training amongst local businesses, the Chamber saw membership numbers rise to 1152, as well as recording a 90% membership retention rate. The hard work of the Chamber staff has seen Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber become finalists at the British Chamber of Commerce Awards for Excellence in Membership Services. Chief Executive Andrew Denniff also welcomed a number of new appointments to the Chamber’s Board. Tricia Smith of the Source Skills Academy; Glen Banks of Kinspeed and Frank Kler of Learning Curve Group were appointed as non-Executive directors. This year will see Lisa Pogson enter into the final year of her presidency, and during the meeting her successor was confirmed as business consultant Mark Broxholme who has spent much of his career working in the Steel Industry, before launching Swallow Consultancy in 2016.

Both Andrew and Lisa also paid tribute to longstanding director Gareth Owen, who stepped down from his role with the Chamber at the AGM. A well-known member of South Yorkshire’s legal community, Gareth spent more than 34 years working at Sheffield-based Keeble Hawson, and has acted as a member of Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber’s Member Representation Council since 2009 and been a non-executive director since 2010. Andrew Denniff, Chief Executive, Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber said: “For the first time in the history of

“As Britain heads towards uncertain economic times, the need for support and representation for local businesses has never been greater. Despite the uncertainty posed over the implications of Brexit, it is clear that growing numbers of business owners across the region are turning to the Chamber for advice and support.”

CHAMBER NEWS

Christmas celebrations for the Chamber The Chamber finished their year on a high with a trio of festive events to support local good causes in December. Collectively, members of Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber raised more than £1,000 during the Christmas period which will be used to support the Chamber’s chosen charities. The events kicked off in style with the Chamber’s annual Christmas Dinner on Friday, 7th December, where guests enjoyed a five course meal, as well as live entertainment from Zenon Band, whilst Business Growth Award winner Enzygo Limited was given a Salute to Business to mark its tenth anniversary. Hosted by Shaw Lane Cricket Club and sponsored by Superfast South Yorkshire, over 100 guests were in attendance and helped to raise more than £500 for the Chamber President’s Charity Fund, which will be distributed to Charity finalists at the 2019 Business Awards.

Following the success of the evening, the festivities returned to the Chamber’s former Rotherham headquarters, and now home to Chamber Patron Electrical Safety UK where 60 businesses took part in an informal networking event over a coffee and a mince pie, whilst some members swapped their business suits for Christmas jumpers, donating additional funds to the Chamber’s chosen charity of the year, Molly’s Fund: The Young People Health & Wellbeing Fund. The celebrations culminated at Wortley Hall, when an additional 80 guests attended the Chamber’s Women in Business Christmas Lunch, adding an additional £400 to the funds raised for Molly’s Fund during a raffle. Whilst Faye Smith, founder of Keep Your Fork, received a 10 year Salute to Business.

Lisa Pogson, President, Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber said: “Christmas is a time for giving and I’d like to thank everyone who has contributed to our busy December events programme. Looking back over the past twelve months, it’s been a special year for Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber and I look forward to seeing what 2019 will bring.”

DIAMOND NEWS

Our simple honest service can reduce your print copy costs CSP Systems provide all clients with a clear and simple service arrangement meaning that our clients know exactly what they are paying and exactly what they are getting for their money. Sadly many other businesses are paying far more than they need to. CSP Systems offer a free evaluation of your print/copy costs so that you can see where you could make potential savings.

personally and professionally. We don’t have any hidden clauses or small print trying to catch you out to take more money. We believe in our products and our service personnel – there’s nothing we need to hide.

It’s vital that all businesses looking at a supplier of digital network print, copy and scan solutions take a minute to read what kind of service arrangement you are entering in to. Here are the questions we think you should be asking:

With CSP Systems you will only ever pay for what you use – we charge for copies/prints monthly in arrears so that you only pay for the number of copies/ prints completed – there’s no minimum number.

How long is the service agreement for? Some providers try and tie businesses into expensive contracts that cover a long period of time. We’ve seen some that were a full five years in length! Providers should not unfairly tie businesses to their service agreements. The maximum termination period should be 90 days. What does the service agreement cover your system for? Some providers will charge your business for toners and parts after a set period of time. Furthermore, many service providers will charge you for additional items (which they will often describe in complicated terms). For example you may find an “extra quarterly manufacturer’s warranty charge” in your agreement which is added to the cost per copy/print charge.

D I A M O N D

Is there a minimum number of copies/ printers per month or quarter? Many providers hide a charge for a minimum number of copies/prints per month regardless of whether the client will complete anywhere near that number. This is often not explained to the client as they sign the service agreement and they end up paying for copies/prints that they’ve never used. Is the toner chargeable? Many providers will make the price of colour copies and prints look very inexpensive. However, when it is time for the colour toners to be replaced, they find that the service agreement states that toner is chargeable.

Even better, our Ineo Remote Care service system enables all our installed systems deliver a daily report directly to us with meter readings, toner levels, drum life, waste toner capacity checks and system error codes. This makes our service provision very proactive, ensuring that our clients have no system down time. If you’re running out of toner, we’ll deliver the new toner before you even know. If there is a system error, we can work on the problem before you are aware. Does our simple, honest service sound appealing? Let’s talk!

Why our simple, honest service is much better Our honest service is delivered efficiently by professionals. We’re a Yorkshire business and therefore we believe that things should be kept simple and straight. We pride ourselves in looking after our clients both

Major cash boost for The Civic The Civic, Barnsley’s leading arts venue, has secured major funding for a community engagement programme to develop new audiences. The £183,000 Esmée Fairbairn Foundation grant enables The Civic to develop a three-year programme of outreach activities in the local community. Helen Ball, CEO of The Civic, said: “It’s incredibly exciting times for The Civic and for Barnsley. We have ambitious but tangible plans to increase our audiences across all art forms and build new relationships with local groups. Ultimately this fund enables us to become more sustainable as an arts organisation, to build new audiences, increase ticket sales and build support from local business.” From 2019 to 2021, a new full-time role of Community Engagement Officer will deliver a programme of outreach activities and lead a volunteer recruitment programme for the venue. It also commissions new work from more established artists; this year it co-commissioned one of 2019’s most anticipated new shows from Gary Clarke, Wasteland, the sequel to his smash-hit COAL, which premiers in the spring. The arts venue also runs Cross the Sky, a theatre company for learning disabled adults and provides support to a number of community groups by providing opportunities for them to share their work. Helen added: “We have exciting plans for 2019 as The Civic reaches its 10thanniversary next autumn. Audiences can expect a showcase of national and international quality, fun family days out, new commissions and engagement activities for all. We are looking forward to celebrating our anniversary with our local community.’’ The Civic is currently running an ambitious £5m Connect Appeal to complete renovations and become a world-class destination for the arts.

The vision is to open up the whole of The Civic to create a dramatic and inspiring series of spaces including a new theatre, café, and extended gallery. The Civic recently received £1,000 for the Connect Appeal from Barnsley TUC Training Ltd, a small charitable organisation that exists to support the people of Barnsley. A spokesperson from Barnsley TUC Training Ltd said: “Barnsley TUC Training Ltd share the values and objectives of The Civic, which is why we’re proud to support its Appeal. Our charity works to improve social wellbeing for those in need in our community, and culture and the Arts have the power to bring people together in a transformative way.”

Hatfield bags funding for growth Rotherham-based Hatfield Energy has secured an eight figure finance deal to support the firm’s fast growth which is on track to reach its forecast group turnover of over £30m. The family-owned firm has been based in Rotherham for over 45 years. It has evolved at a fast pace offering bulk commodity supply into heavy industry with an ever-increasing portfolio of secondary and virgin raw materials.

“The support provided by Adam Simpson at Liquidity Club has been great. Adam knows the market well and has made my life a lot easier by presenting the appropriate funding package to assist our growth plans.”

In 1985 Roy Hatfield Ltd moved to Templeborough with a custom manufacturing facility and on site laboratory which is where the company still operates from today. Hatfield Energy can accept and process thousands of tonnes of select bulk materials and industrial wastes. The combined group has four main areas of operation: the metals and minerals division; Hatfield Energy Ltd; gypsum recycling; and industrial and environmental services.

Adam Simpson, director of Liquidity Club, said: “Hatfield Energy is a thriving business who have recorded impressive growth and an appetite to build on this success. I am delighted to help one of Yorkshire’s fastest growing companies to secure the appropriate funding deal to support their continued growth aspirations.

Business finance providers, Liquidity Club worked with ABN AMRO Commercial Finance (ABN AMRO), who acted as funders on the deal, and the Asset Based Lending (ABL) facility will support Hatfield Energy’s growth strategy which includes further expansion of its portfolio of products

and capabilities. It works by accessing cash held within the debtor book and inventory assets, thereby giving Hatfield Energy access to working capital to support future growth. Chris Lambert, finance director at Hatfield Energy, said: “This is an exciting period of growth for Hatfield Energy and we are looking to build further on this success which was highlighted when we were recognised in this year’s Fastest 50 Growth awards. The management team have worked hard in recent years to grow the business and have high aspirations for the future as we are set to reach a group turnover of over £30m this year.

“The ABL facility will work well to support their strategy because it is linked to assets which means funding can be increased as the business expands.” Austin Thorp, sales director at ABN AMRO Manchester, said: “ABN AMRO is delighted to be able to support Hatfield Energy with its continued growth trajectory - a long established business with a strong management team, which we are confident can deliver its plan.”

EXTERNAL AFFAIRS

BREXIT - What really is Next? Since the EU referendum in June 2016, business communities across the country have faced unprecedented levels of uncertainty about trading conditions in the future. While the final outcome of the Brexit process still remains unclear, the Chamber is encouraging companies of all sizes and sectors to consider how they may be affected. Across the UK the Chamber Network has been focused on the practicalities of Brexit for business and since the referendum we have been working, together with many members, to identify areas where companies have concerns and calling for government to answer those practical and pragmatic questions. We believe that there’s power in working together. As the UK approaches its departure from the EU in March, it is crucial that businesses are doing all they can to prepare for the future, so we’ve compiled resources to help firms plan for change. In the midst of high levels of political noise and turbulence it is important that businesses understand what it all means in practical terms. Locally we have utilised our regular Quarterly Economic Review to not only get feedback from members but also to stage a very timely event on Thursday, 17th January at the New York Stadium in Rotherham. Hosting a “non-political” Brexit event focussing just on business may prove difficult, but during the week of the parliamentary vote we felt it was appropriate to do so. Facilitated by Yorkshire Post Business Editor Greg Wright, our panel of experts will attempt to outline the implications for those businesses who trade abroad, particularly within Europe and also discuss the impact on all businesses of a potential no-deal scenario.

Time is running out. We and our european colleagues continue to urge the government to act decisively to get a comprehensive deal done. We need clarity rather than political posturing if they are to get answers to the practical questions that still remain and given the present timeframe there remains a high degree of uncertainty for businesses. Whatever the outcome from 30th March onwards a transition period is essential as a no-deal Brexit will not only impact upon UK business, but would also undermine european companies, supply chains and customs links between the UK and the continent.

James comments: “There have been significant changes within SMH over the past 12 months. Under my new role as Managing Partner we are focused on achieving high levels of growth by offering additional services not available from our competitors, in addition to being on the acquisition trail. “With the recent acquisition of BullockWoodburn Chartered Accountants in Buxton we are now expanding into new regions, and our new services, such as capital allowances and commercial finance, further expand our main offering of accountancy, independent financial advice and wills and probate. This puts us in a great

position to take the SMH group to the next level. “We made the decision to undertake a complete re-brand to develop the SMH brand in line with our long term plans. This culminates with a new website, which is the new focal point of the group. The website is our information centre, where our clients and visitors can find out about any aspect of financial advice they might require for their business, their family or their own individual circumstances. Our aim is to ensure no financial stone is left unturned. “We made the decision to undertake a complete re-brand to develop the SMH brand in line with our long term plans. One of our main objectives is to break into the top 100 accountancy firms in the UK and our re-brand has got us off to a great start in aiming to achieve this. Our rebrand perfectly encompasses this.”

Local businesses to shape training for their future workforce. RNN Group, which comprises of Rotherham College, North Notts College and Dearne Valley College has successfully secured support from the Association of Colleges (AoC) for essential funding for its involvement with the Teach Too project. The Education and Training Foundation development programme focuses on shaping curriculum and courses for the future to support employer’s needs. RNN Group recognises the skills gap and need for tailored skills to help the local economy and the project will help with the development of curriculum across all three of their colleges and help shape the courses of the future to fit with the skills employers want. The project aims to make young people aware of the array of local businesses and what they offer to help them stay locally and drive the economy forward, as well as giving employers a direct involvement in designing, planning and developing courses. It is through the programme that the Group also aims to raise learner and community aspirations, develop a broad set of employability skills relevant to industry, support business growth, increase training and development of staff and additionally provide routes to higher-level employment opportunities.

Jason Austin, Interim Principal for the RNN Group said, “The funding received from AoC is a fantastic opportunity for the Group to provide learners a more enhanced learning experience by engaging industry professionals and a modernised design of delivery. “We plan to work in partnership with local businesses not only to support students in developing the best possible set of skills for them to succeed in their industry, but also to offer additional training for our staff to create the best possible learning environment.” The project initially is focusing on the subject areas Catering and Hospitality and Digital at Rotherham College and will provide students with increased availability of industrial placements, course masterclasses and workshops led by industry professionals and a modernised design and delivery of new teaching and learning materials. If as a professional in your sector or on behalf of your organisation you would like to be involved in the Teach Too project, please contact the Quality team based at Rotherham College on 01709 722874.

Rotherham startup strikes chord with Def Leppard A Rotherham-based videographer is setting his sights on a recordbreaking first year after his business was given an unexpected boost by one of the best-known names in the rock industry. Stuart Turner launched video production business LensGo in the spring after deciding to turn down the chance to build a lucrative career working for a large media agency in favour of using his skills to support South Yorkshire’s business community, with the long-term aim of creating new skilled jobs within Rotherham’s growing creative industries sector Just a week after opening the doors of his new business, Stuart’s services were snapped up by Def Leppard who commissioned his business to capture a special concert at the Royal Albert Hall, organised to raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust. Although many new entrepreneurs aim to build businesses on rock solid foundations, Stuart was determined his venture would not be one-hit wonder and called upon help from the ERDF funded Sheffield City Region Launchpad programme to unlock the potential offered by his new videography business. With the help and support Stuart received from the Launchpad programme he has successfully secured work with a growing number of businesses throughout the UK, as well as supporting a number of organisations in the Sheffield City Region including, Sheffield City Council, Rotherham United Community Trust,

resulting in new jobs being created within the local economy.

Gulliver’s, Rotherham Hospice, the Doncaster Knights and has even worked with actor Brian Blessed. Having spent more than a decade working as a professional videographer, Stuart is no stranger to capturing life through a lens, and after building a workforce of camera operators, editors and designers and securing new contracts throughout the UK, LensGo was named as a finalist for the most promising new business category at the Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards. Stuart Turner, Founder, LensGo, said: “Video is fast becoming one of the best tools to help businesses engage with their customers and audiences and I felt there was a clear gap in the market for our services. I was keen to base my business in Rotherham to help create new skilled jobs within the creative industries sector and since launching the business we’ve successfully built a local, regional and national client base,

“Having spent most of my career working as a professional videographer, I knew my industry well and working with the Launchpad programme helped to give my business direction – I was conscious that when it comes to video there’s quite a large market for the services but I didn’t want to be all things to all people.“ Julia Millea, Business Advisor, Launchpad, said: “Stuart has come a very long way in a short space of time. Working as a freelancer for a number of years, Stuart benefitted from an insight into what is needed to run a business, but there can be very different challenges associated with running your own company. “A key element of the Launchpad programme is encouraging entrepreneurs to understand the importance of business planning, enabling the business to grow and develop. Stuart has gained a lot from the workshops and one-to-one planning sessions and although he is perhaps more comfortable behind the camera than in front of it, gaining recognition as a finalist at the Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards is a well-deserved reward for his efforts over the past few months.”

Supply chain soars with Boeing’s extra investment Leading companies based on the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in Rotherham are set to supply Boeing’s new £20m manufacturing facility in the Sheffield city region (SCR). The 25,000 sq ft facility, named Boeing Sheffield, will enable the Seattle firm to bring the manufacture of key high-tech actuation components and systems used in Boeing’s Next-Generation 737, 737 MAX and 777 aircraft in-house, enhancing production efficiency and reducing costs. Liberty Speciality Steels will be supplying locally made steel which will be provided to Maher, a first time supplier to Boeing, who will then supply bespoke steel bar and premachined components. Investment under previous owners Tata Steel in 2005 saw the Rotherham site at Aldwarke become the focus for steel making, casting and rolling of specialist steels. The steel is manufactured before undergoing further refining at the Stocksbridge plant or the Thrybergh Bar Mill to improve the quality. The South Yorkshire operations have been supplying steel for the A380 Airbus and Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner. Donna Saul, managing director of Maher, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for Maher to be part of the Boeing supplychain, providing machined components and bespoke steel bar to the Boeing facility in Sheffield. The team at Maher are excited to work closely with Boeing and look forward to supplying the service and support required to make Sheffield a success story for both companies.” Boeing is undertaking a major Research &

Development programme with the AMRC to develop new manufacturing techniques that can be applied in the new facility on the Sheffield Business Park. MetLase Ltd has been confirmed as Boeing Sheffield’s tooling and fixturing partner. The joint venture between Rolls-Royce and the Unipart Group is a mechanical engineering consultancy that specialises in increasing productivity by designing and manufacturing complex tooling, fixturing and components for a wide range of industries, often bringing lead times of months down to just days.

Sir Michael Arthur, president, Boeing Europe and managing director, Boeing UK and Ireland, said: “In Sheffield we have an excellent local supply chain and Boeing is sourcing from these established companies because of their high-quality manufacturing capability and talented people. “I’m delighted to bring Maher, MetLase and NIKKEN on board as new Boeing suppliers, and to extend our supplier relationship with Aeromet and Mettis. We look forward to working together.”
