CHAMBER VIEW

Chief Executive’s

Foreword

It is the beginning of October and most of us will already be into the planning stage with only 80-odd days to go until Christmas - the Chamber is no exception - we like to be organised and as relaxed as possible so that we can enjoy the festive period. C H A M B E R P AT R O N S In less than six months we leave the European Union and the plans for Brexit are far from completion or indeed anywhere near agreement. As 29th March looms ever nearer, the government still has no agreed strategy or plans for the biggest change to our way of life since 1945. The two weeks of the 2012 Olympics in London took over ten years of planning and to expect that in less than three years we would be in a position to satisfactorily exit the EU with everything that it has woven into our national lives since the early seventies was incomprehensible. Certainty, Continuity and Confidence has gone out of the window and with it the ability for many of our businesses to plan adequately beyond the end of the current financial year. The leading lights who set us on this path have now left the stage and others have been put in their place to sort out the shambles.

want to be with a ‘No Deal’ scenario - is that what you voted for? (see page 17). But, before all that we have our annual Business Awards evening later this month at the Magna Centre in Rotherham, full details of which appear later in this edition of the Bulletin, hopefully I will see you there on the night.

chartered accountants

And finally, notwithstanding the issues of Brexit, the Chamber heads toward our AGM next month in a healthy state with new directors preparing to join the Board and Lisa Pogson, our president, moving into her final year in office. The recent progress we have made with the acquisition of a new business [CSS], the expansion of our property portfolio and enhancement of our profile under her stewardship reflect the positive style of leadership she and her fellow directors has brought to the Chamber. I look forward to working with all of them during the forthcoming year.

Of course, we will put our business plans and budgets in place because that is what business does best, but the lack of a clear way forward is proving hugely frustrating. Whatever the outcome by April next year the UK will either be in some kind of limbo or in a place where we really do not

City Region Mayor praises contribution of businesses

CHAMBER BUSINESS

City Region mayor Dan Jarvis praised the vital contribution made by members of Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber and has pledged to do more to unlock economic growth after making a commitment to address ‘deep rooted structural challenges’. Speaking at Chamber Means Business, hosted by the Chamber, Mr Jarvis praised the contribution made by its members, and important role the Chamber plays in representing the challenges faced by the local business community. During his address, he laid out his plans to address challenges facing productivity, transport infrastructure and building a skilled workforce for the future. Later during the popular event, which saw more than 350 in attendance, business owners participated in a forum session hosted by Lisa Pogson, President of the Chamber, giving them the chance to hear about future regeneration and investment plans within Barnsley and Rotherham town centres, as well as finding more about the work being delivered by McLaren from their site on Rotherham’s Advanced Manufacturing Park. The audience also posed questions to representatives from Barnsley and Rotherham Councils as well as hearing more about the future plans for the Wentworth Woodhouse estate. Supported with a sell-out exhibition which featured over 50 businesses from across the region, the event recorded its highest ever number of participants and brought together

senior business figures alongside new entrepreneurs, showcasing some of the innovative work currently being undertaken across the Sheffield City Region. Speaking at Chamber Means Business, Mayor Dan Jarvis said: “I was pleased to address the Chamber Means Business event and hear from companies across Barnsley and Rotherham, who have so much to offer our region. “But I am under no illusions of the challenges facing our business community, in areas such as skills and transport infrastructure. Westminster cannot and never will be best placed to deliver a response to these challenges. We must own them. So as Mayor, I am getting on with the job, providing leadership, vision and ambition. “I serve as Mayor because I believe ours is a region whose best days are in front of us – not behind us. Since my election in May I have been focused on developing a vision for a Global Innovation Corridor that builds on the advanced manufacturing and engineering strengths we have here. This will help in creating a truly connected set of business to business interactions, as well as attracting new global investors.

“We all have a part to play in telling our story, and there is much for us to champion. I will personally be taking this story around the world to seek new investment, build new partnerships and attract new businesses – and I hope businesses in the Sheffield City Region will also join me in telling this story, wherever we go.” Andrew Denniff, Chief Executive, Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce said: “Chamber Means Business is a unique event in the Chamber calendar. One which provides our members with the chance to hear about future plans for the region, as well as offering a chance to make new connections and create opportunities to retain business within the local economy. “It is clear from the speeches by both Mr Jarvis and our representatives from Barnsley and Rotherham Councils the vital role every business plays in helping to shape the local economy and I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the day, from our visitors to our exhibitors for making this year’s event our most successful one to date.” Chamber Means Business will return in 2019.

Are Sheffield City Region Businesses prepared for possible Cyber Attacks? How local firms are being impacted by cybercrime will be the focus of the forthcoming Sheffield City Region breakfast. Business people and cyber security experts will discuss their experiences, how they are taking preventative measures and what the government is doing to support and protect their business from future attacks. Cyber security was just one of the business issues that Sheffield City Region firms were surveyed on throughout September in the Quarterly Economic Review. Other questions asked businesses about their sales performance, predicted turnover and training investment, to gain a snapshot of how business is faring and how the local economy is performing. The survey results will be delivered at the breakfast event by Dr David Littlewood, a lecturer in strategic management at the University of Sheffield’s Management School, set within the context of current affairs and trends. Keynote speaker Detective Sergeant Shelton Newsham, Yorkshire & Humber Regional Cyber Crime Unit, will then explain the ‘Four key cyber threats to businesses and how to defend against them.’ He works alongside UK Government agencies, international law enforcement and investigation teams dealing with new attack vectors, identifies new social engineering tactics and provides free cyber security advice for decision makers, business leaders and their staff. He will share case studies of how businesses have been affected, what they’ve done and the free resources available to take preventative measures. Attendees will have the opportunity to voice their own concerns, opinions and experiences during a panel discussion on how cybercrime is affecting

the Sheffield City Region and what businesses, government and academia are doing to address it. This will be chaired by Greg Wright, The Yorkshire Post, and feature a number of local stakeholders including Sian Dudley, CAST Theatre, Nigel Brewster, Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership, and Dr. Achim Brucker, Sheffield University Management School. Funded by the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership and Growth Hub, the Quarterly Economic Review survey and breakfast is run by the Sheffield City Region’s four Chambers of Commerce; Barnsley & Rotherham, Doncaster, Sheffield and East Midlands. The results of the survey are used to shape the support available to the local business community within the region. Dan Fell, CEO, Doncaster Chamber said: “The Quarterly Economic Review provides a snapshot of the local economy and attendees at the breakfast event will be the first to find out about the health of the local economy. They’ll hear case examples and best practice on how to keep their business cyber secure and avoid threats to their future operations and growth. “The results of the survey will show just how many Sheffield City Region

businesses are being affected by cybercrime and the preventative measures being taken both at the practical and policy level. An attack can be devastating for a business operationally, financially and reputationally. “The results will also show how the current economic climate is affecting local business owners, particularly with regards to Brexit, and how this is impacting on recruitment, skills, investment and international trade.” The survey results and voice of event attendees will influence the mandate of work of the Sheffield City Region Chambers of Commerce, key influencers and policy makers to ensure the right support mechanisms are in place for businesses and the local economy to prosper. The Sheffield City Region Quarterly Economic Review Breakfast takes place on Tuesday 23 October, at Inox Dine, Students Union Building, Sheffield University, from 8.00am to 10.00am. The event is free to attend and is open to business leaders and owners across the Sheffield City Region.

AESSEAL wins prestigious Princess Royal Training Award AESSEAL has received a national Princess Royal Training Award for its ‘outstanding’ training and development programme. It is the sixth award this year to recognise the Rotherham-based manufacturer of mechanical seals and support systems for the quality of its apprenticeship scheme and the outstanding apprentices it produces. The award citation recognised the ‘unique dedication to developing their workforce’ of AESSEAL and the impact its bespoke Manufacturing Apprenticeship programme - run in conjunction with Rotherham College and Sheffield University – has had on tackling the engineering skills shortage in South Yorkshire and achieving commercial success. The company recently invested £500,000 to double this year’s intake of apprentices to 40. Its apprenticeship programme won the 2018 Made in Sheffield Manufacturing Apprenticeship/Training Scheme Award and its apprentices Amber Nicholson, Nathan Wall and Ryan

Morris have scooped awards this year, including two for Amber. The Princess Royal Training Award, delivered by the City & Guilds Group, sets AESSEAL among top UK organisations including John Lewis and the Royal Air Force to be honoured for their training excellence. Announcing the award recipients, Chris Jones, Chief Executive of the City & Guilds Group said: “Once again, it is evidence of the very real benefits that investing in staff development can bring to employers, large and small, private, public and not for profit.

“At a time of increasing economic uncertainty and reduced investment into workforce development it is great to see critical business issues being addressed through impactful L&D. Through the Awards we highlight excellent examples of training that have already proved to be effective and we encourage others to build on their success.” AESSEAL will receive the Award from HRH The Princess Royal at a ceremony this month (October). Julia Bloomer, Learning and Development Manager said: “AESSEAL invests not only in our apprentices but in all our employees. They are central to the success of the company. “Our commitment to tackling the engineering skills gap has helped us develop a team of highly qualified and loyal colleagues. We’re extremely proud of our 97 per cent staff retention rate.”

Printers celebrate 50 years in business with a Charity Race Night

Celebrating

1968-2

Derek Hattersley & Son Printers are celebrating 50 years in business, and to mark the occasion they have organised a Charity Pig Race Night. The company was founded in 1968 by Derek Hattersley in a garage attached to his house and as the company grew, one garage became three garages. Both of Derek’s sons became partners in the company and were fully trained at Kitson College in Leeds in all aspects of printing. Until his death in 1988, the business was letterpress only, but when his sons, David and Chris, took over, the company migrated to litho printing. At this point the business also moved to its current home of Mount Pleasant Farm in Hoylandswaine and, with more space, a mailing and packing department and stitching and trimming

line were added. Since 2013 the company has been run by David’s widow, Jane, Derek’s younger son, Chris and now incorporates digital print. To mark their 50th Anniversary they are organising a Charity Pig Race Night to raise funds for Barnsley Hospice Lymphodema Unit. This charity is close to the companies hearts, following the excellent care of David Hattersley, one of the partners before he sadly passed away in 2013.

Master Cutler’s Challenge raises £240,000 Superheroes from across the steel city and beyond have raised an incredible £240,000 for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and The Cutlers’ Company Charitable Trust. Companies, schools and community groups in South Yorkshire have been supporting children and young adults across the region whose lives are just too short by taking part in the Master Cutler’s Challenge 2018. Former Master Cutler Ken Cooke chose South Yorkshire’s only children’s hospice as the main charity for this year’s Challenge, an annual event that has raised more than £1.8 million for great causes since it launched eleven years ago. From head shaves and superhero walks to gin tasting nights and 35-mile treks, money raised through the Challenge will help Bluebell Wood provide services such as end of life treatment and care, counselling, sibling support groups and music therapy. The fantastic fundraising endeavours have been celebrated at an awards evening at the Cutler’s Hall, where AESSEAL plc won the award for the most money raised, after achieving an amazing £30,000.

Sheffield High School for Girls won the award for the most money raised by a community group, and XPO Logistics UK were the winners of the ‘Most Enthusiastic’ award for holding superhero dress down days and taking on Bluebell Wood’s Dragon Boat Race. Newcomers to the challenge, Insight, were crowned the most creative team of the year. The ‘Gordon Bridge’ award, named after the Master Cutler who launched the Master Cutler’s Challenge 11 years ago, is given to an individual, group or business who have gone above and beyond in tackling the Challenge. This year’s accolade went to Chris Heaton, who attempted a world first run across the Gobi Desert. Ken said: “I’ve been hugely impressed by the commitment and enthusiasm of all the teams and individuals involved this year, and delighted that these combined efforts have helped to take the total raised in 11 years of Master Cutler’s Challenges to over £1.8 million. It’s been

a pleasure to play my part in this year’s challenge and that, between us all, we have helped make a difference for the children and young adults supported by Bluebell Wood.” Rachael Dawes, Corporate Fundraising Manager, Bluebell Wood, said: “We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part in the Master Cutler’s Challenge. From dressing up as superheroes to testing themselves at a sporting event, everyone embraced the Challenge in brilliant style. The funds raised will help to support families facing unimaginably tough times, and give them opportunities to make special memories, however much time they have left together.”

Macalloy’s crowning glory for Sydney’s skyline A unique addition to the skyline of Sydney, Australia has been made possible by steel products made in Rotherham by Macalloy. Dinnington-based Macalloy are world leaders in design, manufacture and supply of threaded bar and cable systems to engineering and construction projects across the globe. Approximately 80% of the company’s turnover is from export. Described as a “centerpiece and architectural statement,” the $250m (£137m) Arc by Crown development is almost complete in Sydney’s Central Business District (CBD). Architecture firm Koichi Takada produced a striking design incorporating heritage-inspired lower brick levels transitioning to a modern glass-andsteel tower, capped with a sleek public rooftop that will feature daybeds, a water feature and a bar. Super strong and aesthetically pleasing, Macalloy products are the choice for architects around the globe. The thread is rolled, rather than cut. This gives rise to the use of smaller diameter bars for a given metric thread, resulting in material cost saving.

Multi-award winning company launch new search system Knowledge Bank was founded in 2016 but only launched a year ago and is already changing the face of the mortgage industry. Knowledge Bank, a financial technology, or ‘FinTech’ company, launched a ground-breaking new search system to help mortgage brokers and lenders to search different mortgage criteria to ensure that they can always find the best mortgage for a client. At any given time there can be more than 5,000 different residential mortgages available to someone looking to buy their next home. As every lender has different restrictions or ‘criteria’ regarding who they will lend to, finding the right mortgage can be a mammoth task – even for the most experienced mortgage broker.

To solve this problem, Barnsley mortgage broker, Nicola Firth, invented Knowledge Bank and with the help of local IT expert, Craig Flannigan, launched the first ever mortgage criteria search system. Just one year from launch Knowledge Bank contains over 70,000 different pieces of mortgage criteria from over 165 lenders across eight different sectors including buyto-let, second charge loans and equity release – as well as your usual residential mortgages.

Rotherham News More to come from McLaren? The level of support received by McLaren since announcing it was investing in a new production facility in Rotherham could lead to the British car manufacturer bringing more projects to the Sheffield city region (SCR). A £50m investment has been made in developing and manufacturing the future of lightweighting technology with the soon to-open McLaren Composites Technology Centre (MCTC) on the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in Rotherham. And the man leading on the new centre has spoken in glowing terms on the financial backing, support and professionalism encountered in the region. Speaking at Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber’s Chamber Means Business event in September, Ken Smart, project director for the McLaren Composites Technology Centre (MCTC) (pictured at the chamber event, second left), said that the company had initially been surprised by the high levels of professionalism and business acumen in local government and praised partners at the Sheffield city region, Sheffield City Council and Rotherham Council who worked to land the high profile inward investment. Evidence comes from the £12m commitment from the city region’s “Unlocking Business Investment” programme and the swift approval of the

planning application for the new facility. McLaren recently took the keys for the new 75,000 sq ft facility that will enable the development and manufacture of the Monocell and Monocage carbon fibre chassis used in future McLaren models. Smart discussed the reasons for McLaren choosing to locate only its second ever production facility and the first outside its native Woking, in the SCR. He said: “The McLaren Technology Centre (MTC) in Woking is a wonderful building but it is just too small for our planned expansion. Added to that, there’s not enough people in that area who want to be engineers. “We made the decision two years ago to bring back carbon fibre production to the UK and we chose this region as we were looking for a labour pool containing the technical skills we need. Having the two universities here was important. “Secondly, working with the AMRC [the University of Sheffield’s partnership between industry and academia] meant that we could try out new methods of production. The centre has all the equipment, bought with public money, and so we didn’t have to take the risk of

buying the equipment and our ideas not being possible. “Thankfully they are, and in March the first carbon fibre “tubs” were produced at the AMRC. The unique kit, specifically designed for us, is now being installed in our factory.” The Rotherham facility is due to be fully operational in 2020 when the current team of 45 will have grown to around 200 people. Smart apologised that McLaren won’t be showing anyone around inside the facility. “We can’t give away the crown jewels,” he said. The fastest growing luxury automotive brand in the UK recently revealed an updated and expanded £1.2bn business plan and has upped its production targets to reach 6,000 mid-engined sportscars and supercars a year by 2025. It registered 390 vehicles in the first half of 2018. Smart added: “We are already looking at what else we can do in the region, and what we do is high tech. Now we are here, and with all we’ve experienced, we are here to stay. “I’d be very surprised if there wasn’t more to come.”

Julie Dalton, managing director at Gulliver’s, said: “This is the right place and we will create a resort that will be world class.”

New Rotherham bins to be made in Rotherham Rotherham Council has awarded a £2.5m contract for its new bins to MGB Plastics, the company whose Rotherham factory has the capacity to manufacture in excess of 2 million wheeled bins per annum.

Metalysis powers up industrial scale plant Innovative firm, Metalysis is powering up a worldfirst commercial plant following millions of pounds of investment at its Materials Manufacturing Centre in Rotherham. The finished facility at Manvers means that it can now produce tensto-hundreds of tonnes per annum of high value, niche and master alloys using a simple, cost effective process with significant environmental benefits.

Dr. Dion Vaughan, chief executive officer at Metalysis, said: “In powering up and operating our industrial plant, Metalysis is poised to achieve its target to generate significant profits from our new South Yorkshire production facility.”

The authority has recently approved plans to introduce plastics to the kerbside waste collection service and paid for year round garden waste collections. MGB Plastics is the UK’s largest and leading manufacturer of wheeled bins and kitchen caddies and operates a 65,000 sq ft facility on Barbot Hall Industrial Estate. It has the most extensive collections of large tonnage injection moulding machines and wheeled bin tools in the UK. Part of the renamed IPL Plastics group, which recently launched on the Canadian stock exchange, around £25m has been invested in advanced technology in recent years.
