BREXIT What Now? Regeneration of Barnsley and Rotherham Town Centres

CHAMBER VIEW

Chief Executive’s

Foreword The focus for everyone, let alone our businesses continues to be on the Brexit debacle. At the time of writing we have missed the expected and continuously promised ‘Brexit Means Brexit’ leave date of 29th March. New timelines revolve around 12th April or indeed the 22nd May, should some kind of deal be cobbled together, based on the premise of the “least worst” acceptable arrangements for the majority of our MP’s. Hardly the starting point for the brave, new post-Brexit world promised to us nearly three years ago. However, ahead of whatever Brexit might mean to us we have recruited extra resource within our export documentation services department and have prepared a number of briefing and workshop sessions for businesses across our patch, in the hope that we can keep you as informed and as up to date as possible. Locally, towards the end of March, we did at least receive some welcome news from our regional mayor Dan Jarvis. It would seem that at last he has persuaded our four local authorities in South Yorkshire to agree a pragmatic way forward on the Devolution Deal which I hope will begin to see some progress in drawing down much needed

funding for our city region and looking forward to a potential Yorkshire wide deal sometime in the future from which I hope we will all continue to benefit.

Within the Chamber it looks again like we have had a successful trading year across all three of our businesses and that our membership numbers have held up very well, with a small increase during what continues to be challenging and uncertain times for all of us. The highlight of our activities in early March saw a record attendance at our International Womens Day event during which former Rotherham mayor, Lyndsay Pitchley became the latest ATHENA International Award recipient Reflecting again on what I said 12-months ago, there continue to be many challenges, not only facing business but also impacting on the wider community we all live and work in. The Chamber will as ever continue to influence where it can but also represent the best interests of our members whenever possible.

The Chamber welcomes two new Patrons Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber kicks off the year with two new patrons and 54 new members. Chartered surveying practice, Burgess Commercial and recycling company, Russell Richardson & Sons became the latest businesses to join the Chamber’s Patronage offering. Chartered surveying practice, Burgess Commercial and recycling company, Russell Richardson & Sons became the latest businesses to join the Chamber’s Patronage offering. Burgess Commercial was founded in January 2009 by Paul Burgess and Neil Keally at the height of the global financial crisis, the experienced surveyors drew on their extensive knowledge of the commercial property market to provide a comprehensive range of commercial property services including overseeing sales, leases, property management, rent reviews and valuations, aimed specifically at the South Yorkshire market. Neil Keally, Director, Burgess Commercial said: “At the time we launched the business, the property bubble had well and truly burst, the

Banks were being bailed out and Britain was facing its most serious recession since the 1930s. We knew from the outset that it was a difficult time to launch a new business, but throughout our business journey we’ve worked closely with the Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber and felt we were well positioned to help others access specialist commercial property advice. We felt becoming a Patron of Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber was a fitting way of celebrating the tenth anniversary of our business.” Russell Richardson, which was founded in 1978, is responsible for helping businesses dispose of confidential waste including document shredding, electronic media destruction and IT recycling, as well as document archiving. The company has been an active member of Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber since 2015 and during that time have supported a number of Chamber-led activities.

Russell Richardson said: “Since joining Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber in 2015 our membership has undoubtedly helped us to grow as a company and has raised our profile in the region. Our level of involvement with the Chamber has naturally evolved to becoming a patron and we’re excited to continue and strengthen this relationship, working with the team to build on this further.” Shane Young, Membership Manager of the Chamber, said: “We have been working closely with both Burgess Commercial and Russell Richardson & Sons for several years, in which both have supported the Chamber through membership and events. I’m delighted that both Neil and Emma have seen the benefits of developing the relationship and I’m looking forward to working with both companies on this journey.” Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber now holds 18 patron businesses, and a membership of over 1,100 businesses across the South Yorkshire region.

Young learners steal the show at skills event Two Barnsley apprentices stole the show at an event urging Sheffield City Region businesses to maintain their commitment to young learners despite Brexit worries. Lucy Cowley, 20, and Rhiannon Birkin 17, took to the stage at The Source’s National Apprenticeship Week Question Time: Skills Event to talk about their budding careers. They explained how learning while working was paying off for them at Stocksbridge-based environmental consultants Enzygo and award-winning mechanical seals manufacturer AESSEAL. The event also featured rallying speeches and startling research

detailing how the region could be affected. Paul Johnson, senior economic policy manager at the SCR, gave an illuminating talk on how Brexit could negatively affect the region’s economy and reduce its workforces. Russell Richardson complete relocation to new facility Following a period of unprecedented growth, Russell Richardson have now completed a move of all their operations to a new 50,000 sq ft facility on the Rotherham border, tripling the size of their previous premises. The family owned and run company, is relied on by thousands of SMEs across the country; the head office of the Formula One Grand Prix team, numerous police forces, motor giants and even famous British fashion designers to provide confidential waste, archiving and recycling services. Following an exciting 40th year in business, Russell Richardson are now processing over 1000 tonnes of paper waste every month – almost triple that of two years ago.

The company’s growth strategy, which has seen over £750,000 of inward investment in new machinery, staff and fleet, has led to business going through the roof, says MD Jonathan Richardson. “When we moved to Attercliffe eight years ago we never dreamed we could outgrow that site. But work started to come in at such a rate, our 13,000 sq ft warehouse just wasn’t big enough. Park House Lane is ideally located for transport links and we’ve managed to bring all arms of the business within one

site which has helped improve logistics and security.” GDPR regulations and businesses becoming more environmentally conscious have led to further demand for secure confidential waste services. Said Jonathan Richardson: “We’ve made massive investments that should now future proof us for further planned growth and I’m proud to say that most of the money we’ve invested has been spent locally.”

When you get to work, spend a minute simply noticing your breathing. As thoughts about the day ahead come into your mind, set them aside and return to your breathing.

Set a reminder to continue to practice a minute of meditation at regular intervals throughout the day.

Taking a minute to be more mindful could be as simple as just taking a mindful moment to give your brain a break from reading emails, a lengthy task, or rushing

Rotherham based company wins prestigious national business award AESSEAL, a Rotherham based manufacturer that specialises in the design and manufacture of mechanical seals and support systems, has won national recognition at this year’s prestigious Make UK Future Manufacturing Awards. AESSEAL won the Developing Future Talent award, sponsored by Randstad Inhouse Services. This award recognises the manufacturer that has done the most across the country to build skills, talent and develop their employees internally and promote engineering and manufacturing careers through activities within the community.

Michael Rich, Test House Manager at AESSEAL says: “This award is testament to our hard working and dedicated team, and we are delighted to have won. We put a lot of work into developing our people and to be recognised for this is magnificent. I’m thrilled that we have former apprentices here with me tonight celebrating this award.”

AESSEAL won the regional round of judging back in November and was up against stiff competition from a range of innovative businesses, both small and large. It was selected by a panel of judges drawn from business leaders, industry experts and academics after impressing them, stating:

Stephen Phipson, CEO at Marke UK, the manufacturers’ organisation said: “Developing future talent is vital for all manufacturers. The sector is changing at a phenomenal pace so I encourage other manufacturers’ to take a leaf out of AESSEAL’s book by taking positive steps in up skilling their workforce and preparing for change.”

“This company demonstrated a multifaceted approach to developing young talent within the sector. This included a schools outreach programme,

an award-winning manufacturing apprenticeship programme, support for initiatives to attract and support women in engineering, and a dedicated team including a member of the Enterprise Adviser Network, Prince’s Trust Mosaic Mentors and apprentice ambassadors.”

BARNSLEY TOWN CENTRE

Barnsley town centre is changing. The ongoing £180m regeneration funded by Barnsley Council – known as The Glass Works - is bringing shoppers back into the heart of the town, with the new Barnsley Market and a reviving high street helping to buck declining national footfall trends and create a modern and vibrant town centre. It’s been a long time coming. Back in 2015, Barnsley Council committed to the redevelopment to not only give the town centre a facelift – but to create a town centre of the future with a complementary mix of retail and leisure along with a strong and unique independent offer. That commitment was illustrated with the decision to put the famous Barnsley Market – known for its colourful traders and high quality products – right back into the heart of the town centre, choosing to stick by and support its iconic market where other towns and cities have chosen to desert them. It’s a risk that is starting to pay off.

18

Bulletin

Fast forward four years, and the new Barnsley Market is bustling with trade. In December 2018, footfall in the market was up 10 per cent on the previous year, with over a staggering 260,000 people spending their money locally. Some traders – including one who has been on the market for 32 years – recorded record sales. And if the market’s success is anything to go by – the rest of the scheme is set to rip up the decline of the high street script. This year, the market will be joined by Market Kitchen – an independent food court that will offer a range of tasty street food alongside the three

traditional market cafes that have called the market home for years. JD Sports – one of the country’s biggest fashion retailers – is set to open this side of Christmas in a prime high street location, with more big announcements on the way. A state-of-the-art Cineworld Cinema, Superbowl UK, NEXT and Muffin Break are all on the way ahead of the scheme’s 2021 completion, and promise to not only further revitalise the town centre, but build on the success already being enjoyed. And the offer will be more than retail, leisure, food and drink.

This summer, the flagship Library @ the Lightbox – much more than a library – will open its doors. It will feature cutting-edge digital technology, a rooftop terrace, events space, a sensory room for people with autism as well as a traditional library offer and much, much more. It will be a community hub that’s accessible and welcoming for all. Lounges café/bar/restaurant will open adjacent to the library – providing another new food and drink destination right in the heart of the town centre. Investment continues further afield, with plans for a new Digital Campus ideal for start-up businesses and complete with a hotel and housing on the way. The development has been great – and will continue to be so – for job growth, too. The Glass Works is helping to create employment and training opportunities for local people, with local contractor Henry Boot Construction also offering apprenticeships for Barnsley’s next generation. The project is also impressing other developers, with interest in office spaces being shown, that will help deliver more and better jobs in Barnsley town centre for years to come. But what’s just as impressive, is that the independent food, drink and retail scene continues to boom.

Nearly 70 per cent of the town’s retail, food and drink outlets are owned independently – and Barnsley’s growing independent scene is as much to thank for the ongoing success of the redevelopment as the multi-million pound investment. In the last 12 months, around 16 new independent bars and restaurants have opened in the town centre, helping to revitalise its evening and night time scene. Those independents include gin bars, craft ale pubs and Italian, Brazilian, Mediterranean and American smokehouse restaurants. Dessert parlours, clothes shops, gentlemen’s barbers, jewellers and gift shops add even more to the diverse offer – with the town centre’s Victorian Arcade fully let and entirely independent. The strength of the independent offer is illustrated by the fact that one local entrepreneur – who already owns two prominent business in the town centre – is set to open a new business in The Glass Works. His new business – a bar/ restaurant offer called MEET - is the first confirmed independent business for The Glass Works, but is unlikely to be the last. The regeneration of the town centre is not the only thing bringing local people – and indeed others from across the

region – back into Barnsley. Its events programme has been revitalised and is jam packed with innovative events and grand occasions. The Tour de Yorkshire – arguably one of Europe’s biggest cycling races – will kick start its second stage in the town centre for the second year running on Friday 3 May. Barnsley Bright Nights – the town’s Christmas event new for last year – dazzled crowds with its state-of-theart digital projections and light shows last year, and will be back for more in 2019. And the town proved it’s one that can boogie last August when Dancing Town – a legacy event of the BBC 2 Documentary ‘Our Dancing Town’ that featured Barnsley in one of its episodes – strutted into the town centre for a 10day extravaganza that featured events for all ages, abilities and interests. It’s no surprise that it will be getting a sequel this summer. The success of the project so far is supported by a new scheme recently launched by the council. Love Barnsley Town Centre encourages locals to be proud of their town, support the ongoing redevelopment and spread the positivity it’s generating. It’s already gained a lot of support and it’s easy to see why. There’s a lot to love about Barnsley town centre.

Life is sweet… Yorkshire Cake House recognised as February ‘Business of the Month’ by Hallam FM and PlusNet. Business Owner, Kimberly Needham has worked tirelessly to get her business off the ground, baking many bespoke cakes, cupcakes and traybakes for all occasions. In February, the company rebranded from Cupcakes KST to Yorkshire Cake House, and Kimberly took the plunge to become a limited company and take on a full-time role within the company. Whilst going through the changes to the company, Kimberly applied for the Hallam FM’s Business of the Month completion, sponsored by PlusNet.

After submitting the application, Head of Network and Production at Baur Media contacted Kimberly to congratulate Yorkshire Cake House on becoming the worthy winner of the competition, becoming the February Business of the Month and receiving a radio marketing ad which aired for 7 days. Most recently, the company celebrated International Women’s Day by baking, decorating and boxing 150 individual cupcakes for the Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber’s International Women’s Day event at Holiday Inn Barnsley.

Kimberly Needham commented: “Life has been a whirlwind over the past couple of months, one which I have throughly enjoyed and don’t want to slow down. I’m extremely grateful from the support of Hallam FM. The advertisement brought many enquiries and people have been pleased to tell me that they heard the ad and have been happy to tell friends and family of our little triumph. “It took about 6 months to come up with my new name, logo and brand, but I am truly happy and in love with it!”

Dream Dozen now in place at Wentworth Woodhouse Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust’s pool of expertise has been strengthened with the appointment of six new trustee. “I am delighted to be able to use my professional experience to support Wentworth Woodhouse, a majestic building with a very important social history which I found out about just four years ago when I read the book Black Diamonds and took tours of the house,” said John.

Established to secure a long-term future for Wentworth Woodhouse, Their valuable skills and knowledge range from construction and law to finance, business management, conservation architecture and the upkeep of historic buildings. But the newest is a 19-year old student from Kimberworth…

Also welcomed is Keith Knight, a specialist conservation architect for over 30 years. He is a former English Heritage historic buildings architect and a Building Conservation Officer for a National Park and a London Borough.

Toni Paxford is learning the ropes as an apprentice trustee - and bringing the views and interests of young people to a board which from the off has included the Duke of Devonshire and Rotherham businesswoman Julie Kenny CBE. Toni is no stranger to making her voice heard. She is a former member of Rotherham Youth Cabinet and in 2017 launched Paige’s Project, a support group for 11-25-year-olds with an ‘invisible’ illness. “Wentworth Woodhouse has always fascinated me. My grandparents and mum used to tell me stories of the house and the family and as a young person who is very active in the community my aim is to spark an interest with other young people,” said Toni, who is currently studying Youth and Community Work at a local university. Said WWPT chair Julie Kenny: “We are keen that the voice of the younger generation is represented at board level and are very proud to have Toni in our team. She is determined, driven and passionate. She will spend a year as an apprentice, learning the ropes, and then become a full trustee.” Meanwhile, Henry Boot Construction boss Simon Carr has added his weight to the board.

Simon has been with the Sheffieldbased construction giant for over 30 years and was made its MD in 2009. Simon recently stepped down from the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership, having served as a private sector board member from 2010 to 2018. He is also a board member and former chair of the National Federation of Builders, a board member and past president of the Yorkshire Builders Federation and sits on the CBI Construction Council. Simon commented: “I first heard of the good work being undertaken at Wentworth Woodhouse from Julie Kenny. I jumped at the chance to get involved in saving such a beautiful and important building. It was an absolute privilege to be appointed as a trustee.” The Trust also welcomes the seniorlevel financial expertise of Sheffield Chartered Accountant John Caldwell, MD of Rotherham-based international firm S3 ID Group, which designs and sells electronic safety equipment for the oil, gas and energy industries.

Now running his own practice in York, Keith is chair of the Yorkshire Branch of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation. Lawyers Rachel Cowper and James Berry have also been welcomed as trustees. Rachel, of Wetherby, is Head of Legal for Yorkshire developers Berkeley de Veer Group. She was a real estate partner at Leeds law firm for 10 years and co-ran the firm’s Corporate Social Responsibility Programme. James is a partner with national law firm Freeths LLP and specialises in Dispute Resolution for clients in manufacturing, construction and technology. He lives in Sheffield and is a governor at Sheffield Park and Sheffield Springs Academies. Said WWPT CEO Sarah McLeod: “We now have an immense range of experience, knowledge and support in our board of trustees. We are extremely grateful for their time and commitment. They give us a very strong core foundation as we build Wentworth Woodhouse’s future.”
