CHAMBER VIEW

The Year Ahead Chamber President, Owen Gleadall reflects on 2013 and discusses the focus for the year to come.

During the course of last year the Chamber continued to develop and went through a major restructure following the Board’s decision to reduce our involvement with publicly funded contracts. On that basis, the Chamber took the decision that we would concentrate on core activities covering membership and support services, export documentation, policy and representation and other areas of local economic support. It also gave us real opportunities for development and growth. We now have a totally committed team, located both at Genesis Park in Rotherham and with a town-centre base at The Core in Barnsley, working together to make a real difference to business in our area. ‘Business. Always Business’ is our key focus and we intend to grow and develop relationships with all major stakeholders across the region over the coming months. Our involvement in the Sheffield City Region Chambers Group also gives us direct links with the Local Enterprise Partnership and ensures a positive and influential involvement in the economic development of our region. Times may be challenging for some time to come, but we firmly believe that with all the changes we have made we are in a very strong position to provide the breadth and quality of services that our members demand and deserve and in terms of growth, the Chamber has continued to pursue profitable business and achieved the level of projected surplus at year end once again. Our representation locally also continues to grow in stature with very close links with the local councils in both Barnsley and Rotherham, where we have a place around the table of all

Yorkshire sports stars shine at charity lunch A host of Yorkshire sporting stars and personalities joined the Chamber for a special Christmas luncheon, in support of Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity. Boxers and Cancer Charity ambassadors, Scott Jenkins and Adam Etches, attended the event, which took place at the Holiday Inn, Barnsley, to back the charity’s Christmas Star Appeal. The appeal encourages people to give a gift to support the Cancer Charity’s work, and ultimately give more families in the region a brighter future. Other stars who attended included Barnsley footballer and Cancer Charity patron, Bobby Hassell, former player and coach at Rotherham United, John Breckin (who also was a player at Doncaster and coach at Barnsley), Mark Todd from Sheffield United and former premier league referee, Keith Hackett from Sheffield. Away from football, British Superbikes rider Kingsley Ruddy, from Hoyland, Barnsley, Olympic swimmer Joe Roebuck, from Rotherham, and head coach of Sheffield Eagles RLFC, Mark Aston, also attended. Six-year-old, Darcy Jo Burke, from Darfield, Barnsley, featured in a poignant video shown

to guests about the switching on of Weston Park Hospital’s first ever Christmas lights display. Darcy was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumour in March this year and was chosen to turn on the hospital’s Christmas lights display in recognition of the immense bravery whilst undergoing extensive radiotherapy treatment. The event was compèred by “The Voice of Sheffield United FC”, matchday announcer Gary Sinclair. Ireland Colliery Brass Band from Chesterfield played carols throughout the lunch to create a festive atmosphere. Bobby Hassell said: “It is a great honour to be here alongside fellow sportsmen to support the work of Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity. “The hospital does a fantastic job helping cancer patients in our region and as a patron of the Cancer Charity I hope that I can help raise more money and awareness of their vital work.”

The sporting-themed festive lunch saw proceeds from ticket sales, raffle and auction totalling £2,225 donated to charity’s Christmas Star Appeal. Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity fundraiser, Catherine Rhone, said: “We are so grateful to the Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber of Commerce for hosting this fantastic event and it was an honour to have so many well-known sporting faces attend and support our appeal. “Money raised will help us towards funding world-class cancer research and treatments that will give more families the chance of spending more Christmases together.” The Christmas Star Appeal, sponsored by Sheffield law firm Irwin Mitchell, is supported by both staff and patients from Weston Park Hospital. It is hoped the initiative will raise more than £15,000 for the Cancer Charity.

Free childcare at ‘Outstanding’ new nurseries Pollywiggle Day Nursery Ltd has recently undergone an expansion program to open five brand new children’s nurseries across Rotherham and Doncaster, adding to its existing site in Treeton with new sites in Swinton and Eastwood in 2013 and three new sites in Doncaster opening in early 2014. All new sites have been opened to mainly provide places for 2 to 3 year olds as many families will now be able to take advantage of a new Government initiative which aims to extend its free early education offer of up to 15 hours free childcare per week. Kelly Wright, Area Manager of Pollywiggle Day Nursery Ltd commented on the scheme,

‘Most parents are now aware that their 3 and 4 year olds are eligible for these free childcare places but many are still not aware their 2 year olds may also be eligible. Early education means children can socialise with others their own age, increasing confidence, independence and making sure they have the best head start in life.’

Kelly added, ‘We can check whether a two year old is eligible with one simple phone call. If they are eligible, there is nothing to pay and this scheme does not affect any benefits parents may be claiming. If your child would be entitled to free meals at school, they will be able to benefit from free early education once they turn 2 years old.’ Pollywiggle Day Nursery recently celebrated being awarded ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted at their Treeton site – the highest award possible.

Introducing Grimm & Co to Rotherham Inspire Rotherham has been recently successful in securing support of the ‘Ministry of Stories’ (London), to create the Yorkshire chapter of this exciting, already proven approach. The Ministry of Stories is a writing centre, supported by Nick Hornby (author/screenplay writer) plus a host of celebrities/artists. The Ministry is hidden away at the back of ‘The Hoxton Street Monster Shop’ in London, part of the wider family of ‘826 Valencia Writing & Publishing Centre’, San Francisco, fronted by the ‘Pirate Supplies Store’, supported by Dave Eggers. Grimm & Co. is a retail outlet for magical beings, supplying and servicing self-conscious wizards, hungry giants, rainbow seeking leprechauns and a place where fairies (grown up/infant) can earn their wings and then try them out on the flight simulator. Somewhere in the shop, hidden behind the secret door, invisible to most humans, there will be a word labyrinth, a magical story space for 7

Friends, Romans, Beer Lovers… The Rotherham Real Ale and Music Festival is hoping to prove that there’s no place like Rome, when it marches back into town. This year, organisers of the popular event have teamed up with the Chamber to offer an exclusive offer for members to make this year’s event one of the most memorable to date. This year’s festival will step back in time, transforming Magna into the ancient Roman fort that occupied the site more than 2,000 years ago. Proceeds from the festival’s Roman extravaganza will go towards supporting the work of four local good causes: The Rotherham Hospice, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity and the Magna Education Trust. Rome’s seven hills will be represented by seven bars inside Magna, with each becoming home to a comprehensive selection of real ales from across Roman Britain– with plenty of locally produced ales also on offer.

Sponsorship packages start at just £70 and all packages include festival glass, programme and free entry to the festival. For beer loving businesses, barrels of your favourite beer are available at just £100 and accompanied with 15 free entry tickets. The power of video marketing With over 6 billion hours of video watched each month on YouTube – that’s around an hour for every person on the planet – video has certainly come of age especially in the B2B sector. Chamber member, Sheffield based Fortay Media has been at the forefront of producing powerful business videos for the past 7 years and has seen the impact video is having on the marketing mix.

study, an on -screen introduction to the company and its workforce, an interview with an industry leader – all help drive traffic to your website to find out more.

While most local businesses understand the benefits of using video, it’s the ‘where and how’ that is still a challenge for even the most marketing savvy companies. With its wide raft of diverse clients, Fortay Media has extensive experience in how to maximise the use of video and is able to advise clients on the most appropriate approach to take. According to Fortay Media, with so much information readily available at the touch of a button, many customers are already half way through the buying process before they even contact you. Understanding where your Prospects are in the sales funnel will, therefore, have a major impact on your video ROI. In the initial stages, a video can be used to establish credibility and expertise. This is where the personal approach plays a major role. A testimonial or case

It gets even better with tablet and smart phone users. They are 3 times more likely to view a video than PC users. They are also more likely to be at the evaluation stage of the sales process. This is where product demonstration or ‘application’ videos work well. Showing your products being used, ‘how to’ videos and ‘explainer’ videos all lead to closing the sale. Video is also very versatile. 60% of marketers now use video in their email marketing to promote products or services and / or generate leads. Downloading to a mobile device allows for demonstration on the move and creating a you tube channel opens up millions of viewers around the world and the chance to create a ‘global phenomena’

Google loves video. They know that most people prefer to watch a video than read reams of text. 7 seconds for a website compared to 2 minutes for a video. Research also indicates that embedding video in your website has the potential to increase your page one ranking 50 fold.

Video is very engaging and when combined with a ‘sales process’ strategy is a powerful generator of leads and website driver. Integrate it with all aspects of your marketing mix especially social media and it quickly becomes your ‘silent sales person’

To avoid property being stolen from your van, where and when practical, try to remove portable power tools from the vehicle when parking the vehicle up overnight, and store them in your home, out of sight of prying eyes. 2. Use notices to state to criminals that no valuable items are stored in the van overnight. 3. Keep a record of all serial numbers for power tools, valuable equipment and satellite navigation units, and consider writing your details or that of your business on to the casing of power tools, using a permanent ink pen. Marking tools in this way should make them less easy for offenders to sell and so less likely for offenders to steal. 4. In recent times a number of vans have had their catalytic convertors(CATs) stolen whilst they were parked up. The Police supported website, www.securedbydesign.com contains details in it’s

website, www.soldsecure.com, contains details of garage security products that if fitted ought to make your garage much more of a challenge for offenders to attack.

vehicle security section, of a number of products that either better secure the CAT to the vehicle, or mark it making it harder for an offender to sell on. 5. Offenders may target vans for theft of the fuel in their fuel tanks. There are locking fuel caps and fuel filters that can be fitted to help combat this type of offence. Another way to combat this kind of offence is to park your vehicle so that the filler cap is close to a building line or to a colleague’s vehicle. This procedure may inhibit offender’s attempts to reach the filler cap. 6. Always be aware of where you park your van, and ideally look for a well lit parking space, in a busy and easily monitored area. 7. When you park your van at home try and use a garage, if you have access to one. The Sold Secure

8. If you park your van at home overnight consider installing external lights that illuminate the vehicle and it’s surrounds during the hours of darkness. Low energy bulbs emitting white light and housed in luminaires are ideal for this. 9. Offenders tend to try and attack vans by forcing the rear doors. Parking your van so that the rear doors are close to a wall or a garage door, will make access via this route less likely. 10. The spare tyres housed in cages under certain vans have also been targeted for theft in recent times. Spare tyres are obviously an essential piece of kit. See if you can increase the security of the cage containing yours.

AGM Report – November 2013 The Chamber’s recent Annual General Meeting saw the Chief Executive, Andrew Denniff announce a net surplus of £94,247 on turnover of just over £1 million during the year ending March 2013 and a reminder that the group’s current balance sheet stood at £1.3 million. Following a full review and restructure of the business undertaken during April/May the Chamber presently employed 13 staff based at Genesis Park and in new offices at The Core in Barnsley. Membership, under the guidance of recently appointed Operations Manager, Mark Hannigan was increasing steadily and currently stood at 1170 and the ongoing budget for the financial year was ahead of target.

The Chamber continued to engage widely and plays a leading role in economic activity across both Barnsley and Rotherham, occupying a key, influential role on the Rotherham Economy Board and the newly formed Barnsley Economic Partnership. The AGM also confirmed the appointment of Paul Jagger (Thomas Rotherham College) as President Elect and noted that he would succeed into the position of President during November 2014.

In closing the meeting Andrew further commented, “ I must recognise the unswerving support from all my staff who have ‘stuck with the programme’ through a very difficult period for all of us and I know that all members of the Chamber can be re-assured that we are in the best possible hands to take the business forward into 2014”.

Business Community unites to offer employment advice Local businesses were invited to engage with school children and the jobseekers as part of a Local Employment Advisory Forum (LEAF) event held by the Chamber, Mears and Rotherham Metropolitan Council. The LEAF event was primarily there to offer support and advice for attendees and information was available to gain an understanding of career paths available, what roles are available and the skills and qualifications required to fulfil these. The event was a huge success, with around 35 businesses exhibiting and offering advice as `potential future employers for over 500 visitors, of which 400 were students and pupils from local Rotherham schools looking to take the next step towards future employment. The National Apprenticeship Service was on hand to offer the latest apprenticeship advice and they received 35 enquiries following the event. Also, the Princes Trust was in attendance to offer advice on enterprise and grants, and received around 70 enquiries. To complete the day, the event hosted the Rotherham Young Entrepreneur awards,

Apprenticeships, skills and the pledge During the autumn statement the government announced the development of a model which uses HMRC systems to route apprenticeship funding direct to employers and there will be consultation on the technical details and alternative funding routes for the smallest businesses in early 2014. The Chamber has a long track record of promoting the benefits of apprenticeship schemes to employers and we believe that firm and robust proposals around underpinning these benefits with a framework of support for employers is a step in the right direction for businesses. Dominic Beck, Policy and External Affairs Executive at the Chamber said, “Employers support the idea that they should have a greater say over how apprenticeship funding is used. At the same time though, we are pleased that the government has listened to the British Chambers of Commerce’s warning that funding apprenticeships through the tax system may not be suitable for all companies. We support the concept for those companies that want to take greater control over apprenticeship funding, but there need to be alternatives for those who cannot take this task on. “Businesses already pay huge amounts to train their employees, both young and old. So we remain adamant that the training costs of the youngest apprentices should be met by

the government in full as they are at present, with employers responsible for their wage and mentoring costs.” The Chamber, like many Barnsley businesses has promised their commitment to apprenticeships by signing the Barnsley Apprenticeship Pledge. Launched during Apprenticeship Week in 2013, the initiative asks Barnsley businesses to commit to working toward employing 2.5% of their workforce as apprentices by April 2014 and the Chamber was amongst the first businesses to show their support. The Chamber has welcomed Sara Richardson to the business as their Business Administration Assistant as part of her Business Administration Level two apprenticeship. Sara said, “An apprenticeship has enabled me to get straight into work and should help me to progress into a future career. The main benefit for me is that I am able to learn and earn while in a business environment”

OBITUARY – Anthony George Baker (7th May 1935 – 17th November 2013) The Chamber was sadden to hear about the passing of Anthony Baker. Anthony became the fourth generation of the Baker family to serve as President of the Chamber, performing the role between 1982 and 1983. He continued his support and involvement as founder and Chair of the Rotherham Enterprise

Agency, a company which recently marked 30 years in business and Chairman of Yorkshire and Humberside Chambers of Commerce. Anthony was educated at Clare College, Cambridge, where he studied engineering. Following graduation he held various senior appointments in the steel industry before establishing his own business producing a coal based product.

He was well-known in Rotherham and throughout South Yorkshire where he held a number of positions. In 1985 he became Chairman of Rotherham Health Authority until 1992 when he was appointed the founder and Chairman of Rotherham General Hospital Trust. Anthony was also a past Deputy Lieutenant of South Yorkshire and Freeman of the Culters’ Company.

With a heritage spanning almost two decades, the reputation of the Yorkshire International Business Convention (YIBC) certainly proceeds itself. Now, for businesses in the City Region the excitement is set to hit fever pitch as the YIBC is to be held in the town for the very first time. YIBC has brought the biggest names from the worlds business, entertainment and global politics to a Yorkshire stage since 1995. That stage will now be set at The Magna Science Adventure Centre on Friday, 28th March 2014.

18 Bulletin

Andrew Denniff, Chief Executive at the Chamber said, “This is a wonderful opportunity for Rotherham to be hosting such a prestigious business event. The Chamber of Commerce will be working together with YIBC and other leading companies to ensure that we maximise the potential for the event and that we involve as many local businesses as possible. We have committed to supporting the occasion and will be directly engaging in

making sure that this is a huge and lasting success for our region.” Already the line-up of keynote speakers is shaping up to create a day of insight, intrigue and absolute entertainment. Mike Firth, founder of YIBC, said: “We cannot wait for the Rotherham YIBC, everyone is excited and looking forward to the speakers and the experience the delegates are set for.”

COVER STORY

This Years Speakers Robert Peston Robert Peston, the BBC’s go-to man for breaking business news tops the bill currently, he is expected to share his experience and insider knowledge of the high-flying world of banking. Following a hugely successful career, which has seen him editing some of the most influential newspapers in the country, his own stock skyrocketed during the banking crisis and subsequent economic mire which has flowed from the financial meltdown of 2008. Breaking the story that Northern Rock was on the cusp of collapse, he led the way delivering exclusive after exclusive as the world markets tumbled. He will be joined by previous YIBC speakers Rosie Swale-Pope, Brian Blessed and debutant Richard Noble.

Rosie Swale-Pope Rosie made her YIBC debut last year as the event was held in Bridlington as the premier host venue - following numerous successful years in West and South Yorkshire. Rosie’s inspiring tales of perseverance and triumph over adversity were a huge hit with delegates in East Yorkshire. Not least was when she recounted the tale of how she became the first person to circumnavigate the globe on foot – this grandmother literally ran around the world!

Brian Blessed As one of the most recognisable faces, and voices, of modern theatre, TV and film, Brian Blessed’s larger than life character always makes for an interesting and certainly entertaining, if a little wacky, interlude. Often forgotten is his intrepid tales of exploration of the world’s highest peaks and most barren of landscapes. This not-to-betaken-too-seriously man has some serious life experience and shares it in the most engaging of manners.

Richard Noble This cast will be complemented by the appearance of Richard Noble, the man behind Thrust II and the ultimately successful bid to push a land-based vehicle (or car to most folk) past the sound barrier. His life has quite literally been one on the fast lane, and he will share the ins and outs of getting a mammoth idea and dream off the ground into something real and tangible which has pushed the limits of engineering, testing his business acumen to the edge and has ultimately been hugely successful.

More speakers will follow, completing a line-up that promises to be mouth-watering.

Solar Europa And Chamber Develop Business Package Solar Europa and the Chamber have worked together to develop a package for businesses for which the consumption of environmentally friendly electricity will bring much needed long-term cost savings. Solar Europa provides the solar PV system free of charge to businesses. In exchange for the free system, Solar Europa requires the business to enter an agreement to consume the Green Electricity generated by the system. This Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) is for a period of 20 years saving up to 50 per cent of grid prices and will not only secure a material reduction in utility based electricity costs but will also protect against energy price inflation (historically at least more than 3 per cent above RPI and rising) as a result of linking increases to RPI only.

The electricity costs are agreed at the outset, on signing the PPA and incorporated into the contract. The contract is portable so should a member decide to sell its business or move premises the new owners can also benefit from low cost electricity. The UK has now introduced the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) which is a direct business tax calculated by reference to the energy that a business consumes and the carbon created in producing that energy. For every ton of emissions produced by Industry in consuming carbon creating energy the CRC is charged at ÂŁ16 per ton.

This tax could prove to be ruinous to every size of business over 25 to 30 years. By generating renewable energy from solar PV this reduces the consumption of electricity created from carbon creating sources so it is not only the cost of energy bills that is reduced but also the amount of tax payable under the CRC scheme – a double saving for members to enjoy.

Autumn Statement

A Summary of Key points from the Chancellors Autumn Statement: International Trade •T he number of regionally based UK Export Finance (UKEF) Export Finance Advisers will be doubled.

Chamber View

Enterprise

Andrew Denniff, Chief Executive said “Like many of the Chancellors recent statements, this years is good in parts. Many businesses will be pleased that he has finally relented on business rates after years of increases that have put unnecessary pressure on businesses all across our region.

•A n additional £160 million for Start Up Loans to 2018-19 to meet higher than expected demand and allow the scheme to roll out to all ages.

“The rates relief announcements are positive but not nearly enough to boost cash flow and potential investment. The Chancellor should have been bolder and sought to implement proper reforms to support and encourage businesses as the nation’s economy begins to recover.”

•T he New Enterprise Allowance scheme, which helps unemployed people to set up their own business, will be extended to March 2016. Labour Market & Skills •£ 40 million has been allocated to deliver an additional 20,000 higher apprenticeship starts in the 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years. •E mployer NICs abolished for under-21s earning less than £813 a week (equivalent to the NICs upper earnings limit, matched to the income tax higher rate, which will be £42,285 in 2015-16), from April 2015. Business Rates • Inflation-linked increases in business rates will be capped by 2% in 2014-15 - rather than by the September RPI outturn of 3.2%.

Member View Gareth Owen, Consultant at hlw Keeble Hawson said, “The Chancellor has announced some good news such as capping business rates increases at 2% with vacant high-street property relief of 50% but this is an area which must be further reformed urgently if high streets are to stand any chance at all of survival. The playing field with on-line retailers must be levelled or the high street will die.” Robert Teal JP, Barnsley Retailer said “The statement had many examples showing that Government was listening to business. A specific benefit to businesses like mine, which employ young workers, was the scrapping of Employer’s NI on under 21 year olds. Over 10,000 young employees in Barnsley and Rotherham will become less expensive to employ: I will certainly consider this when recruiting for my expanded businesses in 2014.”

Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership View James Newman, Chairman of the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership, said: “The LEP welcomes the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement and his renewed commitment to rebalancing the UK economy by decentralising powers and funding. “Whilst we are pleased that the national economy is moving in the right direction, we recognise that further ‘difficult decisions’ will be needed in 2014, and urge the Government to hold follow through on their commitment to devolution. “We support the Chancellor’s focus on supporting business growth through increases in funding for exports and innovation. “We will welcome more detail on the allocations of funding as we develop our Strategic Economic Plan ahead of the Government’s deadline later this month.”

POLICY

Policy and External Affairs priorities for the coming year In 2014 the Chamber will once again build on our reach and influence within Barnsley and Rotherham as the leading business representation organisation. Dominic Beck – External Affairs Executive highlights what’s to come this year from the Chamber’s Policy and External Affairs department. We will continue to promote participation in our representative activities through our working groups, Representation Council and engagement events. This year we will again hold our MPs breakfast meetings in Barnsley and Rotherham, a budget breakfast in March and take part in the regional Chamber’s business conference. The Chamber attaches a great deal of importance to the engagement and participation of our members in the activities of the Chamber. We will explore new and innovative ways of ensuring that being part of the Chamber is something that businesses all feel value from.

this is where we believe our ability to be genuinely considered as the leading business representation organisation in the area is determined heavily by our ability to wield our influence at a strategic level. In 2014 we want to champion a number or key issues for businesses, including work place health in partnership with the public health teams in Barnsley and Rotherham. Instigate and establish the new Corporate Covenant initiative and potentially deliver a project in partnership with other interest groups around supporting ex-servicemen and women back into employment once they have left service.

In addition to the representation orientated activity of the Chamber with our working groups and events, the Chamber has seen a marked growth in our activities more broadly in our external affairs.

We are very keen to ensure that business is supported in the area whilst also promoting the good work that local businesses do for their local communities, the disadvantaged and the youth.

In the past year we have hosted visits from national policy makers and we have been approached by national bodies to provide evidence on a range of topics including health and safety. We do a substantial amount of engagement with South Yorkshire Police, both local authorities in Barnsley and Rotherham and continue to support a plethora of socially driven initiatives. In

Finally we would like to declare a call to action to all our members and non-members in Barnsley and Rotherham to engage with your local Chamber of Commerce for the prosperity and betterment of all. This way we can all work together under the leadership of the Chamber to deliver our aims and objectives.

We’re one of the only steakhouses in Yorkshire to offer this and it is attracting lots of interest, with diners inviting their friends and colleagues down to watch them attempt the feat! “We are really pleased with the number of bookings we took for Christmas parties and have some really exciting plans for Christmas and the New Year. And a Northern Soul night booked for 18th January 2014” Craig adds: “We’ve had a fantastic start since we opened at the end of October. Feedback from customers is that they are looking for a healthier option, rather than Indian or Chinese food – and we are filling that gap in the market. What is helping us to build our reputation and brand which keeps customer returning is that we serve quality,

Real Steakhouse & Grill Customer James Hughes said: “I would much rather pay that little bit more knowing all the food is locally produced/reared and free range and good quality, like it is at the Double Barrel, over pubs and chains that get bulk stock in at cheap prices and make a horrible meal.” The Real Steakhouse and Grill at the Double Barrel is available for private hire for children’s parties, christenings, anniversaries. WOMEN IN BUSINESS

Jackie Freeborn, Women in Business Chair tells us about what the Women in Business group have achieved in 2013. As we move in to 2014 it is a time to reflect on what 2013 brought us, and for Women in Business it has been a really amazing year. As Chair of the working group I am immensely proud of the local women in business who give up their time, share their ideas and resources to champion, celebrate and recognise the contribution we make to our economy, wider society and in securing strong family values in supporting young people to achieve the best they possibly can. And what better way to end our year than with our Sparkle and Steel event, which embodies all of those things. On 13th December Sue Wright, Director at Diamond Dispersions who is half the brains behind the company which has won a Queen’s award for Enterprise: International Trade, shared her thoughts about her own personal journey as a fantastic role model for all women today. And just to show that women have always contributed significantly to our engineering and manufacturing base, I am delighted that the women who worked tirelessly in our

engineering and manufacturing sector during WWII (lovingly referred to as Women of Steel) all in their 80’s and 90’s, joined us to tell us a few tales about their work and life experiences.

We have provided a range of different events and networking opportunities which have been well received including our International Women’s Day celebration in partnership with Inspiring Women from Sheffield Chamber. In March 2014 we are doing this again along with ladies from Doncaster as well. We had a Bake and Banter, business networking whilst eating cake - nothing better! Our vintage tea afternoon provided a style consultant to help women understand the power of image and communication, and our Business Surgery provided up to date advice, knowledge and tips on HR legislation and good practice, social media and PR and branding. An eclectic range of events to meet all of our preferences and tastes. Always wanting to fulfil our social responsibilities we supported charities for homeless people in Barnsley and something we are very proud of… we supported the Junior Chamber campaign in support of The Flamingo Foundation in re-cycling over 80 of our bras!
