Chamber View As I come to the end of my period as President I think it’s fair to say that we continue to grow and progress.

The Chamber recently hosted the annual Business Awards in Barnsley at the Metrodome, which was a fabulous evening. This was the first time we have held this event in Barnsley and it was good to note that it was by far the best attended, the entry levels were higher than in previous years and the quality was outstanding, and I’m sure you will all agree when you see the winners of each of the categories. Our membership continues to grow steadily and our representation of business in local economic discussions is welcomed and valued. The creation of the Sheffield City Region Chamber’s Group is a vehicle by which all regional Chambers can come together on a regular basis and comment and advise on any of the plans and developments affecting this city region and our members, with a single voice. This year we have also participated in a trade mission to Xi’an in China and helped to host their reciprocal visit to the region, which was an opportunity to demonstrate the developments taking place at the AMP at Waverley and other areas of our region; including the Man of Steel project, an iconic sculpture due to be erected at Kimberworth in Rotherham overlooking the Lower Don Valley. We continue to develop our links with ClujNapoca in Romania and also with our Chamber colleagues in the Netherlands, these will be built on over the coming months as their plans

offer opportunities for local companies to be involved and gain valuable business. A new initiative for the city region has recently been launched – The Big Investment Project [BIP] - in which all South Yorkshire Chambers are involved and supportive. This is intended to offer a path to funding for those larger development projects, which will make a significant difference to wealth and jobs across our region. Typically, projects will range from £10 million to £75 million. Finally, another ‘feather in our cap’ is our inclusion on the shortlist for a BCC award for “Excellence in Membership Services”. This is national recognition that we are doing it right. Hopefully, by the time you read this we will have the award proudly displayed in Genesis Park!

BIP – A boost for the economy Exciting plans to help identify and develop transformational and iconic projects across South Yorkshire and the North Midlands to generate significant new opportunities for business and people in the region have been announced. Recognising that there are not enough significant, ambitious and commercially sustainable new projects in the Sheffield City Region to transform the economy, the Chambers of Commerce for Sheffield, Doncaster, Barnsley and Rotherham and Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, have joined forces to create the Big Investment Project (BIP).

BIP will act as a catalyst to generate new growth opportunities – projects typically above £10m and up to £75m – put forward from businesses and individuals for the region. Through an evaluation board featuring local and national business leaders, BIP will identify the best projects to go forward to a group of mainly Londonbased investment fund managers who are set to visit the region early next year.

Andrew Denniff, Chief Executive said; “Major, transformational projects can give a real boost to the region’s economy. Here is a real opportunity for far sighted entrepreneurs and businesses to get the kind of financial backing that can support ideas that will have a leading impact on what we believe will see long term, sustainable change across the whole region”.

What do you need to do? Simply fill it out the Expression of Interest Form on the BIP website - https://bip.uk.com Your idea will be assessed by an evaluation panel and, if successful, will be worked up (using specialist help if necessary) into a project and into a prospectus to go to the funders.

AMEE proving a success in City Region More than 100 companies have signed up to the Academy of Manufacturing and Engineering Excellence (AMEE), which has a target of training up to 800 young people and placing 300 jobless into apprenticeships. In its first eight months the academy, run by Brinsworth Training, has found apprenticeships for 63 unemployed youngsters and has training completed or in the pipeline for more than 40 staff at more than 20 firms. Employers who have signed up include Ronseal, Cutting & Wear, Firth Rixson, Toyoda Gosei and Robson Handling Technology. The companies can access subsidised training under the scheme, which is aimed at delivering training that cannot be found elsewhere. Jen Spendlove, Operations Director of Brinsworth Training said, “The training is bespoke in each case. It might be that a company has an employee who knows how to use one piece of equipment, but not another. And rather than sending them on a big course which doesn’t really cover what they want and has all the costs in time and

money, we can organise the niche training they need. “That way it literally fills the skills gaps that can hold companies back. But it is not just for the shopfloor, it can also cover training for managers where they have gaps in knowledge, perhaps in exporting or identifying new markets.” The project has been partly supported by HM Government with Employer Ownership funding and has a strategic advisory board made up of more than 20 employers from the engineering and manufacturing sector. Most of the training is done at the company’s own premises, with the Introduction to Engineering taster days for would-be apprentices run at Brinsworth’s Rotherham base. Jen continued “We have an impressive engineering and manufacturing sector here

in the Sheffield City Region, but we need to make sure we have the skills to keep up in a global market. “Relying on market solutions to the problem doesn’t seem to work. But AMEE is about employers being pro-active and finding the solutions themselves. The training also means companies can recruit locally knowing that they can provide the bespoke training needed. “It might be that they operate in a very niche market and have equipment that is very specialist. It might be difficult or impossible to find off-the-shelf training for that, but under this scheme we can literally build the training to match.” AMEE is open to all manufacturing and engineering businesses in the Sheffield City Region and is due to run until 2017.

Eagles announce Olympic Legacy Park stadium Sheffield Eagles Rugby League will return to the site of the old Don Valley Stadium in 2016, when they move in to a new state-of-the-art community stadium in the Olympic Legacy Park. The Eagles have landed a significant investment to help fund the building of the stadium, which will feature a high quality synthetic pitch, an impressive main stand, a 50 bed hotel, catering and hospitality areas, and facilities developed in partnership with Sheffield’s second University Technical College. Plans for the new Legacy Park are well advanced and the first phase of the redevelopment is already underway with the building of a new through school, catering for children from 2 to 16 years. The school will open its Primary phase in September 2015, with the Secondary phase opening a year later. At the same time, Sheffield’s second University Technical College (UTC) will open on the same site, specialising in human sciences and digital technologies. The Eagles have secured a £6 million pounds investment to build a main stand incorporating a 50 bed hotel, restaurant and hospitality facilities along one side of the ground, and there are plans to develop joint facilities with the UTC within the stadium complex. Additional funding has also been agreed for a high quality synthetic pitch and whilst it is important to appreciate the Eagles role in the broader partnership for the Olympic Legacy Park, it also should not be under estimated just how critical the new stadium will be for the club’s ambitions on the field.

Sheffield Eagles, Mark Aston, said: “The new ground gives us the impetus to challenge for and achieve Super League status, something we have never given up on. When we nearly lost the club back into 1999 and reformed with a new direction. Having the best facilities at the new stadium will allow us to continue the development of our own local talent, retain and attract quality players and be very competitive as a club”. Andrew Denniff, Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive, commented: “I am really excited that the new facilities, as part of the overall UTC set-up, will provide

a genuinely accessible regional hub for both learning and leisure activity. The Eagles are arguably South Yorkshire’s most successful sporting franchise in recent years and the 21st century facilities offered in and around the new stadium will hopefully match their ambitions to play in the Super League”.

Capital Investment for Window Manufacturer Leading new build window manufacturer, Building Products Solutions, is investing £280,000 to expand its premises and bring its entire production operation in house. The company’s investment is being boosted with a grant of £80,000 from the Sheffield City Region. Building Product Solutions will extend its premises by 3500 sq ft to house a new glass plant.

“We’re spending substantial amounts on our workforce and new equipment with a clear growth strategy. The expansion paves the way for seven new members of staff – it’s an exciting time at Building Product Solutions!”

The investment will allow the business to develop its own sealed unit production plant where it is able to cut sheet glass to size and manufacture its own glazed window components in-house. The expansion will cut costs by 20% but more importantly, help Building Product Solutions deliver top quality customer service and reduce turnaround time. It is also set to create seven new jobs before Christmas. Ian Harrison, Managing Director of Building Product Solutions said: “After a

Party Conference Season: British Chambers of Commerce View The British Chamber of Commerce offer their views on the key business and economic issues raised during the party conferences.

THE LABOUR PARTY

CONSERVATIVE PARTY

LIBERAL DEMOCRATS

“Chuka Umunna’s commitment to further devolution of economic development in England is progressive. There is no such thing as national prosperity without boosting the growth prospects of our cities and counties. Decisions on local growth are best taken when businesses and councils decide what arrangements work best for their areas, and deliver these accordingly.”

“The commitment to raise the level of public investment in apprenticeships will be supported by business. Increasing the number of apprenticeships from two million to three million over the next five years is a challenging but worthy aspiration. As an economy that relies on knowledge and skills, training our young people is as important as the infrastructure of our nation such as our roads, railways and airports.”

“We would have liked to have heard more from Vince Cable on the issue of business rates in his Conference speech. British companies now pay the highest business rates in Europe which has a huge impact on investment, and ultimately jobs and growth too. We are calling on the next government to commit to a thorough review of the system and freeze rates for all businesses until 2017 when a full review is due to take place.”

“Businesses will also support Mr Umunna’s announcement to commission an independent review into British export support. Growing the UK’s export sector is essential to rebalancing the economy and putting it on a long-term sustainable footing. Ensuring we have the best possible support mechanisms for export businesses will be necessary if we are to compete with the world’s best.” “Business will find much to agree with in Labour’s focus on delivering more apprenticeships and technical degrees. We must support all talent pools in the economy to maximise economic growth in a knowledge based economy. Education, training and skills at all levels are as important to the infrastructure of the nation as our roads, railways and airports.”

12

Bulletin

“Businesses will support the Chancellor’s continued commitment to mend Britain’s public finances. Above all, companies value certainty, consistency and predictability when it comes to economic policy - so it is pleasing to see the measures announced by the Chancellor are in keeping with the goal of getting the deficit down.” “Keeping corporation tax low is important to the UK’s competitiveness – but so are the many taxes businesses pay before making a profit. To have a truly competitive tax system, the government must reduce and reform business rates, which remain the highest in Europe. We are calling on the next government to achieve the lowest business input taxes and charges by 2020.”

“It is positive to hear the Secretary of State speak of the importance of longtermisim in both business investment and in government policy. But too often in the past the rhetoric of politicians is at odds with the reality of what businesses see on the ground. Actions, not words are what count and this means sticking by an evidenceled approach to policy, not cutting across established mechanisms such as the Low Pay Commission for the minimum wage, and abiding by the findings of the Davies Commission on building new runways.

We wanted to hear the views of everyday businesses about the national minimum wage on whether they see it as positive or just another increase in the cost of running their businesses. Paul Moorhead, Director & Licensed Insolvency Practitioner at Moorhead Savage Ltd “Times are still tough for many businesses and increasing costs will only put more pressure on cash flow and profitability. But paying a fair and decent wage is an important responsibility for employers. Successful businesses recognise the need for good pay and conditions matched to good people management and motivation.”

Chris Harpin, Commercial Director at Castus “It sounds like politicians are taking a rational approach that I’m happy to support but more effort is needed to reduce the cost of living so that people can enjoy the money they earn rather than just cover taxes and everyday living costs.”

Lisa Pogson, Director at Airmaster Air Conditioning Ltd

Owen Gleadall, Managing Director of Merlin Software

“We at Airmaster have always tried to pay fair wages and viewed the NMW as a good thing. More recently we have been asked to sign up to the ‘Living Wage’ by some of our customers. We agreed at Board level that this was a fair thing to do, but it can be a strain on resources and we have to identify other areas to save costs.”

“In my view, minimum wage has to be determined in consultation with the business community and others and as such is best carried out by the existing Low Pay Unit. That way it is free from ‘political’ interference and is more about balance than votes.”

Helen Jaggar, Chief Executive at Berneslai Homes “One of our company aims is to be an Employer of Choice and that means paying a decent wage, so we support both the minimum wage and Living Wage. Paying a decent wage both attracts and retains staff, and provides a return on your investment”

Ian Wragg, Managing Director of Kinspeed “The main problem with the minimum wage is that other staff look at it as a measure of what they should be earning. So the proposed 3% increase in minimum wage will result in an expected increase for staff not on minimum wage to maintain parity.”

Theme park company on the up in Barnsley A Barnsley company which makes installations for most of the UK’s theme parks has moved into new, bigger premises to keep up with demand. Themesparx moved into Fall Bank Industrial Estate at Dodworth in August 2013 just months after setting up, but has now relocated to a new building more than three times the size on the same estate. The company supplies sets, sculptures, moving characters and special effects for theme parks including Alton Towers, Legoland, Chessington World of Adventure and Blackpool Pleasure Beach. Matthew Kitchen-Dunn, who owns the business with his wife Jane, said: “We realised almost as soon as we moved into the first unit that we would soon outgrow it with the amount of work we were

Postman Pat’s van and In the Night Garden characters to trees and rocks - that move. getting in, but luckily we found somewhere almost next door.” The company specialises in making animatronics or models - of everything from

He broke away to set up Themesparx in May 2013. When the company moved to Fall Bank in August 2013 it employed six. There are now nine staff, with plans to increase that to 15. Turnover is in the region of £1m, with a projected increase of 30 per cent in the next year.

Manufacturing firm to “go green” with grant funding Manufacturing firm Naylor Industries, which was established more than a century ago is set to embrace 21st-century eco-friendly technology. The Clay division of Naylor’s Drainage subsidiary has been given grant funding of almost £650,000 towards a £2.5m project to increase capacity and reduce energy consumption in its Cawthorne factory. This project will boost sales, create jobs and reduce the company’s carbon footprint. Naylor’s finance director Andrew Trippitt said: “We are thrilled that this grant funding from the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership will enable us to progress our ambitious plans to grow internationally whilst simultaneously creating a more sustainable business for the future. “Over recent years, we have made great progress in developing export sales of our

specialist pipe systems for the chemical drainage and trenchless technology sectors. “At the same time, capacity constraints and rising energy costs have posed a threat to future growth. This project will allow us to expand our international sales whilst allowing careful control of energy consumption. “The project plan is all about enabling us to develop and grow our export business in a sustainable manner whilst creating employment opportunities in the Sheffield City Region.” Naylor’s products include clay and plastic pipes as well as decorative gardenware. The company has sold onto every continent

and into 49 different countries. The firm is seeking to expand its export markets and has identified opportunities particularly in markets that are experiencing dramatic economic growth, such as Indonesia and the Philippines. The £2.5m investment project aims to “dramatically reduce” the company’s carbon footprint. Smart utility metering will allow the production team to optimise and control energy consumption; an in-house plastic reprocessing plant will allow the firm to reuse its own waste on site and energy-efficient lighting will be installed. At the same time, commissioning of a new energy-efficient kiln and dryer will allow the company to increase capacity, whilst creating in excess of 30 jobs.

My congratulations go to all our winners and especially everyone at Roy Hatfield’s, the Business of the Year. “Holding the evening in Barnsley has certainly set the bar for our future events and has given us a real challenge, one I am sure the Chamber will rise to next year” This year also saw the Chamber present their first Charity of the Year award, which was awarded to The Pippa Jones Little Treasure Trust who received £3000 in prize money.

Happy Days are here (again) as Airmaster welcome autism community group Swallownest-based Airmaster have just welcomed new tenant Happy Days to share their building. Happy Days are a community outreach service supporting adults with mild to moderate learning disabilities and Autism. They offer opportunities to develop life and employment skills, as well as providing leisure activities ensuring healthy physical and mental wellbeing. Back in 2007, Airmaster had been looking for premises to house their growing workforce- but when the recession hit, they struggled to fund the expansion and were in danger of stunting future growth until the three directors decided to buy the former Wetherby pub at Swallownest themselves. Director Lisa Pogson, explained, “Our vision was always for this building to be at the heart of the community. Our first task was to convert the former landlord’s flat into a separate three bedroom residence on the top floor. “Inviting Happy Days to share the redeveloped basement area will bring members of the community right into our building and we are delighted they can make excellent use of the space to support vulnerable adults. Airmaster’s directors are now looking to open a community café within the pub’s former conservatory this year and invite interested applicants to get in touch.”

“Our users will also be supported to do things they can find difficult but others take for granted, such as shopping, accessing local leisure centres, libraries and travelling on public transport to enjoy entertainment like bowling or the cinema. We are really looking forward to being here.”

Lisa concluded, “We already have plans for some exciting Christmas events on the carpark which is rapidly becoming something of a community square with Stewart the Tuk Tuk man selling his fruit and veg every Saturday- so watch out for news.”

Copier technology earns top marks with school Barnsley photocopier specialists Copier Systems have been busy in the summer holidays, helping the Sutton Park School implement the latest scan-and-go technology which has widely improved the efficiency of firms all around the country. The scan-and-go technology itself is a step in the direction of the ‘paperless office’, encouraging firms to move away from the filing cabinets of old using and introduce digital storage of documents. “Using this quick, reliable system, employees of Sutton Park School have collectively saved time and effort, enabling them to input more time into the tasks that really matter, streamlining productivity” explained Copier Systems managing director, Andrew Bethel. Serving the Hull-based school, Copier Systems continue to represent Barnsley on a national

scale; delivering cutting-edge systems to organisations of all backgrounds, shapes and sizes, as Mr Bethel outlined the benefits for businesses and, specifically, the school; “Storing physical documents reduces office space and is openly prone to damage. Instead, the ability to store documents digitally negates these issues, with latest developments also delivering essential security and efficiency”. “Employees will save time not only scanning documents, which emails instantly to the user, but in the long-run where pinpointing individual files now takes a simple click of a button”.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Social Media Focus

How to build a ‘Fanbase’ with social media? David Watkins from Fortay Media shows you how (and why) to build a Fanbase. When Oscar Wilde wrote ‘there is only one thing in life worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about’ in his book ‘the Picture of Dorian Gray’ over 100 years ago, he could very well have been referring to the social media phenomena of the 21st Century. The concept of social media is not new – all that’s changed is the methodology. No longer do we write letters and request a response. Today we use Facebook and Twitter to achieve in minutes what previously took hours, days even weeks. So what are we are trying to achieve? In a nutshell, social media is all about managing your reputation. It’s evolved from simply connecting people to become an integral and powerful part of our marketing strategy. You ignore it at your peril. The figures speak for themselves. Facebook –1.2b active users and over 24m of them in the UK, 100m Twitter users - spending an average 170 minutes each month tweeting, and 300m LinkedIn members - 40% of whom check in daily. There is no doubt, social media is transforming the way we do business. So how do you harness this power? First you need a plan. A strategy that

enables you to focus using a rifle gun rather than a scattergun approach. Know what you want to achieve – driving traffic to your website, who you want to influence – your target audience as specific as you can and what social media tools they use. For example, Facebook lends itself more to b2c, LinkedIn is predominantly b2b while Twitter crosses all sectors and profiles.

“Content is the key and original stuff at that. Establish yourself as an ‘expert’ – someone who knows what they are talking about and is prepared to share this knowledge in an interesting way rather than simply continually promoting your brand. “

community. A ‘fanbase’ - followers who have similar interests or who have influence and then making sure you give them a reason to talk about you. Content is the key and original stuff at that. Establish yourself as an ‘expert’ – someone who knows what they are talking about and is prepared to share this knowledge in an interesting way rather than simply continually promoting your brand. Build a ‘fanbase’ with added value content and measure your success through key metrics such as the number of retweets, likes and links etc. Interact with your followers by quickly responding to queries or complaints, incentivise them to ‘like’ you with freebies or goodies and encourage them to share your posts with their own fanbase by making it useful to their followers. It’s a fact. Building a carefully targeted online community using social media not only raises your profile and brand awareness but more importantly drives traffic to your website – your number one priority.

However, it’s not about the volume of tweets or posts - in fact quite the opposite. It’s all about building a

Mental health must be a priority It’s time to face the issue and impact of mental illness. It includes a full Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) providing access to a 24 hour counselling and advice line, as well as face to face counselling sessions or cognitive behavioural therapy, if recommended by the telephone counsellors.

CMO Professor Dame Sally Davies highlighted that up to 70 per cent of people with common mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety are in work, saying: “It is crucial that we take action to help those people stay in employment to benefit their own health, as well as the economy.”

Vertex Access Tackle London’s Vertical Garden On the door step of Buckingham Palace, the Rubens Palace Hotel unveiled London’s largest and most colourful Living Wall. Vertex Rope Access operatives were more than happy to turn their hand to gardening completing maintenance works in front of an eager audience. Standing tall at 350 square metres with over 10,000 plants and ferns, the London Living Wall will brighten the popular walk from Victoria Station to other tourist attractions around Victoria. The wall is ripe with pollinating plants recommended by the Royal Horticultural Society – made up of horizontal rows of ferns, flowers and plants, anchored by 16 tons of vertically placed soil. These plants are said to be the best pollinators, attracting wildlife such as bee’s, birds and butterflies, improving the air quality for those living, working in the area and making this busy tourist clad area of London a little greener. Vertex Rope Access was commissioned by Treebox to provide Industrial Rope Access solutions for the maintenance of the Living

Wall façade, this included; replanting/pruning of plants and ferns and maintenance of the irrigation system. For this project, Rope Access was considered the best option. The other methods of access such as scaffolding and MEWPs were not reasonably practicable in providing an efficient access solution. Secondly, the

Living Wall will need regular maintenance; Rope Access provides a safe, fast, cost effective access solution, creating little visual disturbance. The ‘Vertical Garden’ is not only an aesthetically pleasing tourist attraction but helps combat surface flooding by using rain water from the hotel roof and filtering it into the walls irrigation system, this not only absorbs excess water during heavy storms but allows for sustainable, low maintenance preservation. Vertex Access provides Industrial Rope Access Operatives for a variety of operations. Often the use of abseiling techniques can be the most practical way to achieve tasks that would otherwise involve considerable expense, time and impact on the building.
