Chamber View

Paul Jagger brings your right up to date with the Chamber and its plans, hopes and expectations for the new year.

We are very excited looking forward into 2016. The Chamber has made a significant decision to refocus the direction of travel for our organisation and we can now look forward to getting all our members involved in what promises to be a great year. Our key goals for 2016 will be to have a Chamber full of active, engaged, diverse members. This will also extend to our partners across the whole Sheffield City Region and especially our two local authorities in Barnsley and Rotherham. We must continue to be recognised as the “go-to” private sector organisation for the voice of business in our locality and we must also play our part as key influencers on behalf of not only our members but indeed the wider business community. Last year was transitional for the Chamber and we performed well, but this year must be one of progress and development, to stimulate greater engagement with

business and to promote as widely as possible the opportunities for investment within the region. Acknowledging the importance of the city region economic agenda is essential and the broader role of Chambers of Commerce is obviously an area that I believe we will develop with our colleagues in Doncaster, Sheffield and the north Midlands. The role of the Local Enterprise Partnership will come under greater scrutiny as they actually start to have finance available and money to spend. It is essential that Chambers of Commerce, as representatives of business, are both fully supportive of the new LEP chairman Sir

C H A M B E R

Nigel Knowles and indeed totally focussed on the “Business Growth Agenda”. As the economy continues to improve and expand, our own membership will also continue to grow and with the increase in profile comes a responsibility to show leadership on behalf of our members. Your Chamber will certainly aim to do just that.

The Y-Accelerator has been delivered in partnership by Rotherham Investment and Development Office (RiDO), the University of Sheffield and South Korean trade organisation TRoom, with valuable support from Sheffield Hallam University and numerous public and private sector mentors. On November 12, the programme culminated in an investor pitch day, hosted at AESSEAL’s head office in Rotherham. The teams delivered a seven minute pitch and were questioned by a panel of judges and the audience which included a variety of potential investors and partners.

Changkeun Moon, CEO of Ultimate Drone said: “Before participating in the Y-Accelerator programme we developed great technology but we didn’t have a business. Dominic Beck, Corporate Affairs Manager at Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce said: “Hosting the Korean delegation through the Y-Accelerator shows that Rotherham is looking far beyond the shores of the UK to attract inward investment and develop long-term partnerships with markets thousands of miles away from Rotherham. The Korean entrepreneurs showed how you can turn a fledgling business idea into reality and we are proud to have been involved in the project which was led by Rotherham Council.”

The judging panel was made up of Gordon Bridge, chairman and group director at AESSEAL PLC, Julie Kenny, Chief Executive, Pyronix Ltd, and Peter Sorsby, Director of Corporate Banking, Royal Bank of Scotland. After deliberation and an audience vote, Ultimate Drone was announced as winner, receiving £30k investment from the programme. Ultimate Drone is developing a revolutionary high-powered multi-

Safetynett (UK) launch their Retained Health & Safety Support Service to the Barnsley and Rotherham businesses All businesses must appoint a competent person to help meet their health and safety responsibilities. Although competency isn’t strictly defined, a person is often referred to as competent if they can demonstrate sufficient training and experience or knowledge and personal skills. This person is there to ensure compliance with health and safety legislation and avoid the damaging consequences of injury, prosecution, fines and insurance claims. Phil Slingsby, Commercial Director of Safetynett (UK) says “Competency is often one of the first points deliberated in a court case and therefore it’s very important that the competent H&S person in any business really knows what they’re doing”

Green is the Colour The first year has passed of the whole Kinspeed car fleet now being electric / hybrid cars and the results are eye opening. Our previous company cars have been commercial pickups which helped the driver’s personal tax but were generally diesel guzzling beasts. When one of the directors decided to move to Barnsley, the company decided to look at the prospect of buying an electric vehicle to cut down on fuel costs. Our first dip into the market was with a Vauxhall Ampera which is an electric hybrid that does 38 miles on a charge. With the employee living 36 miles away it has proved to be a very inexpensive car to run, averaging 250+mpg over 51,000 miles.

• £18,000 saving in fuel

Since then we have bought 3 Mitsubishi Phev electric hybrids and have seen the following savings:

Our next project is to have solar panels installed to pay for the electricity to charge the vehicles up in the day.

• £1,600 saving in Road Tax

By the way we also sell and implement Sage software…. Which is also green.

Rotherham Wins Great British High Street Award Rotherham town centre is celebrating after beating off stiff competition to win the best town category in the Great British High Street competition. Rotherham, alongside Altrincham and Tamworth, was one of just three towns to be shortlisted in this section, and online voting took place throughout October and November. Public votes contributed to 50 percent of the selection of the category winners, with the other 50 percent coming via the judging panel, made up of industry leaders from across retail, property and business. Rotherham was visited by Judge Alana Renner, Deputy Communications Director at The Post Office, on 5 November. Rotherham Council’s Advisory Cabinet Member for Housing and the Local Economy Cllr Denise Lelliott said the win was wonderful news for the town. “We are delighted that the efforts to regenerate the town have been recognised in this national competition - having seen the other entries this is a huge honour,” said Cllr Lelliott. “A number of partners have come together to make a real difference to the town centre and their hard work and belief in the High Street is paying off. “A combination of restoring the town’s historic core, creating high quality public spaces and supporting independent retailers to help differentiate our offer has been a winning

formula. “The response from shoppers and residents has been fantastic, our success in this competition is thanks to their support and the fact that so many people voted for the town is a huge boost to everyone working and running a business in the town centre,” she added. Charlotte Scothern of Patchwork Pig added: “It was such a boost for all the businesses that are trading here to see us shortlisted from 230 applications! The High Street and wider town has changed dramatically in recent years; the Townscape Heritage Initiative has undoubtedly transformed some of our most impressive buildings. Many of my customers can’t believe the changes when they visit.” Rotherham’s Retail Investment Manager Bernadette Rushton said she was delighted the hard work in the town centre had been recognised. She added: “Despite what the name suggests, the competition isn’t about saying we have the best High Street in the country or that we don’t still have challenges to face, it’s about recognising the work that has gone into regenerating the town. “There has been a huge investment in the town centre from a number of partners,

not least the retailers and building owners themselves and we hope to be able to show the judges just what fantastic businesses, old and new, we have here and just how far the town and High Street have come in recent years.” Rotherham’s win means a share of a prize pot worth £80,000, alongside expert training and tailor-made tips from Google’s training taskforce – the Digital Garage on Tour – for 100 of their shops, bars and restaurants.

Students develop enterprise skills in a giant tepee Barnsley College students had the opportunity to take part in a range of enterprise activities in a giant tepee as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW), a campaign to promote enterprise and entrepreneurship. Students took part in practical enterprise activities including designing a marketing logo, a finance and budget planning exercise, a procurement challenge and creating a timeline of successful global entrepreneurs including Mark Zuckerburg and Bill Gates. Students were also given a theoretical activity where they were asked how they would regenerate Barnsley town centre if they were given £3m as part of the Better Barnsley Project. The aim of the event was to inspire students to develop a range of skills and encourage innovative thinking in relation to becoming self-employed. Rubina Rashid, Head of Enterprise at Barnsley College, said: “We wanted to provide an environment outside the classroom which would allow our students to think in an innovative and creative way. The tepee provided the opportunity for students to think outside the box and has encouraged them to develop a range of entrepreneurial skills.” As part of the week-long schedule of events, Ben Mansford, Chief Executive of Barnsley Football Club who has recently been appointed to the college’s Board

of Governors, and Andrew Denniff, Chief Executive at Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber of Commerce, provided an inspirational talk to over 100 students. The theme of the talk was ‘Make it Happen’ and Ben and Andrew spoke about their career journeys, highlighting that roles evolve over time and that with hard work and dedication everyone is able to achieve great things. Business student Kimberley Sacre said: “I really enjoyed the talk, it made me realise that just because I’ve already been to university and changed my mind about what I want to do, I can still succeed. It definitely inspired me

to pursue my dreams.” Other activities that took place throughout the week included a motivational talk by successful entrepreneur Julian Hall and ‘My Markets’ where students had the opportunity to run their own market stalls and sell hand-made products to help raise money for charity. In 2015, through the release of the highly acclaimed film ‘Suffragette’, we have been reminded of the great sacrifices and determination of women throughout the ages and we owe it to them and us to continue to strive to achieve this. We are incredibly proud of Lisa Pogson, one of our brilliant Women in Business who in November was appointed President Elect, going on later this year to become the next President of the Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce In celebration of women’s achievements I am thrilled to announce that Women in Business, will be joining thousands of others worldwide, to honour and celebrate the contribution women make on International Women’s Day on the 8th March 2016. Its official – spending is the new austerity As the government relaxes its grip on the UK purse strings, businesses are set to follow suit and begin to spend more, particularly on marketing in 2016. When provided with a fresh new budget, the temptation can be to start spending immediately. This knee-jerk reaction often leads to money being wasted. With an increase in marketing activity, a carefully planned strategy is a proven way to make sure your efforts stand out from the competition. So put your chequebook away and do the thinking first. Follow these simple tips to give your business the advantage in 2016.

happening, when it is happening and who is responsible. If your strategy is full of holes then it isn’t finished. Leaky ships tend to sink. 5. Be flexible Things can change in a business within a matter of days. Don’t be afraid to alter your strategy if needed. It should act as a road map to get you from A to B, but never be so rigid that you can’t react to changing situations.

1. R eview the main objectives of the business. It may sound obvious, but often businesses don’t take time out to reconfirm their goals. This exercise is vital to the success of your marketing. It’s usually rather enjoyable too. 2. Identify your audience To run a successful marketing campaign you need to really get under the skin of your audience. Who are they? What do they watch, listen to or read? Where do they go? Who are they influenced by and what do they like to do? Once you have built up a picture of your audience you can plan a targeted strategy with them in mind. 3. Consider all channels and choose carefully There are many ways in which to communicate with your target market but it’s important not to spread yourself too thinly. If you’ve fully understood your audience, you’ll have a good idea of how best to engage with them. Remember, it’s better to communicate well through one channel than badly through three or four. 4. Westfield Health continues support for Transplant Games South Yorkshire-based health insurance provider Westfield Health has been announced as the headline sponsor of the 2016 British Transplant Games in Liverpool. The not-for-profit organisation has now been involved with the Transplant Games for the last nine years and the 2016 event marks the eighth time that Westfield has been the title sponsor. Hosted annually by the charity Transplant Sport (TS), the Games attract hundreds of athletes from across the UK – all of whom have undergone a life saving transplant – to compete in a variety of sporting events, from swimming and lawn bowls to running and volleyball. They are accompanied by members of their family, support personnel and coaches. The aim of the event is to raise awareness of the importance of signing onto the NHS Organ Donor Register and to discuss one’s wishes now with our families. Graham Moore, Westfield Health Chairman said: “The British Transplant Games is always an incredibly moving occasion.

Each and every competitor has been on an amazing journey and to see them back to health and competing in sport is testament to the incredible value of organ donation. “We were delighted to support the 2015 Games in Newcastle which left a wonderful legacy, with the number of people on the donor register across Newcastle increasing. I’m sure Liverpool 2016 will be just as successful and we are delighted to help make the Games happen once again. “Westfield Health is committed to making a difference to communities throughout the UK and we are extremely proud to be continuing our support of the Games in 2016.” Andy Eddy, TS Chairman said “We cannot thank Westfield Health enough for yet again being the platinum sponsor for the British Transplant Games.

“This vital support means that TS, together with Westfield Health, can really make a difference across the UK, in promoting not only the benefits of transplantation through this sporting event, but also in raising awareness of the desperate need for more people to sign on to the NHS Organ Donor Register.” The Games, which will take place from 28 – 31 July 2016 was launched at a prestigious ceremony at the ACC Liverpool, on Monday 30 November 2015. A model for the rest of the UK to follow Wosskow Brown, who a year ago answered the call from government urging the private sector to help regenerate local economies has been praised for creating “a model for the rest of the UK to follow” by regional business and industry ambassador Richard Caborn. The former Minister for Sport was speaking at an event to celebrate the Wosskow Brown Foundation’s first anniversary and the opening of a dedicated office - described as a one-stop shop to growth.

Year Two and beyond is to scale up. We want to uncover new partners to join us on this journey and find further organisations to work with,” said Foundation head Jim Lawson.

Mr Caborn said: The Foundation sets a great example. The vision these people have here is a model not just for South Yorkshire but for the nation. They hooked together the private sector and sport and the community. They are helping a lot of young people to go into develop their potential. A year ago the law firm’s charitable organisation launched it’s first initiative, the WB100 aimed at providing free support to 100 businesses, 100 charities and 100 grassroots sports clubs over five years. “We have been working with our first 36 beneficiaries to great success and our aim for

“Our dedicated office signals our intention to continue helping our local economy and community partners. It’s a place where those we seek to help can walk in and have informal conversations with us about their growth ambitions. We will be opening a second office at our Barnsley site during 2016 and from there will be delivering business breakfasts

and seminars aimed at supporting the growth ambitions of local organisations. “So we would like to invite any business in the Barnsley and Rotherham area who are looking to grow during the next 12 months to get in touch and find out whether we can assist them to achieve their goals. With the recent demise of the Government’s Business Growth Service and its Growth Accelerator programme, we are keen to reassure local businesses that we are here to help them grow.” Wosskow Brown managing partner Ian Brown said: “So much has been achieved in our first year. Established businesses wanting to expand, budding entrepreneurs wanting to get off the ground and local charities and sports groups needing help can come to network, get advice and benefit from business events and courses.”

Tram train on its way The first tram train vehicle has made it to Sheffield but delays to the innovative project mean that it won’t be running to Rotherham any time soon. The already delayed £60m pilot project, first mentioned in 2009, is set to begin in 2017, running vehicles on both rail and tram networks, using the freight route from Rotherham and then joining the Sheffield Supertram network at Meadowhall South. Transport Minister Andrew Jones said: “This is a great milestone in the pioneering Tram Train project which, when complete, will mean better journeys for passengers in South Yorkshire, as well as helping to boost the economy of the local area and beyond.” SYPTE’s Executive Director Steve Edwards, added: “Tram Train will demonstrate the potential, both locally and nationally, of this new technology to deliver value for money services. It will provide a boost to the regional economy, thanks to improved connections across the region. And, if the pilot is successful, it opens the way for Tram Trains to be introduced in other parts of the country.”

Local Business Woman Named Small Business Apprenticemaker of the Year Anne Wilson was named small business apprenticemaker of the year at the celebrating enterprise awards 2015, held in the House of lords. In 2010, Anne Wilson, Managing Director of precision engineering company Numill, foresaw an industry-wide skills drought. Anne committed to putting apprentices at the heart of Numill. The business has made a significant investment to employ, teach and support apprentices and safeguard its future. It’s also provided work placements for school-age students via schools and local charity, Workwise. Anne has endeavored to spread the apprenticeship message beyond Numill by supporting other employers through Apprenticemakers. As Chair of the Employer Strategic Advisory Board for a local engineering college Anne provides advice and support for an Employer Ownership Pilot project, which has supported 144 apprentices and provided training to many more. Most recently, Anne has become

Governor for Sheffield College to represent small business and industry. Anne Wilson said: “It is vitally important to nurture our up and coming young people so we can have an employable, skilled workforce for the future. My involvement with education and the wider business community is to help others understand the significance of, and support, the future needs of engineering and manufacturing beginning with primary age school children. It is a big honour to be nominated and to win this award.” Sophie Hardwick, SFEDI’s apprenticeships lead, said: “As an Apprenticemaker, Anne has proven herself to be committed for the good of her own company but her perspective is far wider reaching than that. She is someone who has spotted a significant future skills

gap and understands that apprenticeships are the route to filling it, for the good of an entire industry. For that Anne truly deserves to be recognised as Small Business Apprenticemaker of the Year.” The annual event was hosted by the Institute of Enterprise and Entrepreneurs (IOEE) and the Small Firms Enterprise Development Initiative (SFEDI), bringing together educators, entrepreneurs and other key figures from the UK’s small business, enterprise and skills sector. The Small Business Apprenticemaker Award is given in recognition of an individual who has championed the apprenticeship model in their own enterprise and beyond, demonstrating a dedication to extolling the benefits of apprenticeships for learners, SMEs and the wider economy.

Charity prize money to support vulnerable young people Proud winners of the Charity of the Year award, SAFE@LAST, are going to utilize the £3,000 received in prize money to help reach vulnerable young people. The charity, which provides services and support for children and young people in South Yorkshire who are at risk of harm before, during and after running away, were presented with the Charity of the Year award and a £3000 donation prize at last year’s Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards. SAFE@LAST is using the prize money, donated by DuoCall, to purchase USB wristbands to be distributed to young people across the borough. The wristbands will be given out through their Education and Prevention Project which works to educate and inform children and young people about the risks of running away. This project highlights to young people where they can turn for support aiming to prevent them from reaching a point where they think running away is their only choice. The wristbands will be branded to promote the SAFE@LAST helpline and also

include data and links with information for young people. SAFE@LAST Director of Children and Young People’s Services Tracy Haycox commented: “There are significant benefits to leaving a piece of merchandise

with a young person displaying SAFE@ LAST contact details as a physical reminder of our visit and information. Young people that call our helpline to ask for support when they are in crisis often say they have the number because of the wristband.”

Technology company scoops two national awards Alexa Greaves, MD of tech company AAG Systems Ltd, collected not one but two prestigious awards at the Forward Ladies’ National Women in Business Awards 2015, held at The Queens Hotel in Leeds. Greaves was named Business Woman of the Year and also snared the Business of the Year (Growth – 10+ employees category) award for her Yorkshire-based IT company, making her the only double award winner at the event.

“WIBA is an important showcase for the talents and achievements of leading women in business, and it’s a great honour to collect two National awards on top of our success in their regional competitions.” Greaves was quick to share the credit for the awards with her colleagues, continuing “These awards are a testament to the skill and dedication of the whole AAG team to making our company an industry leader. Having so many women in the boardroom is still unusual in our industry, but we’re proving that there are no gender barriers to success at AAG, because we’re all committed to the same goals for the business”.

In their sixth year, and with more than 400 people attending, the awards are always hotly contested both nationally and at the local level by female entrepreneurs and woman-owned businesses across all industry sectors. Speaking after receiving both awards, Greaves stressed the importance of organisations like Forward Ladies saying,

‘Yorkshire Man of Steel’ Steve urges community to bark up the right tree at Rotherham Hospice Rotherham Hospice has installed a memorial sculpture, a steel ‘Tree of Life’ in the garden at Rotherham Hospice. It has been two years since the idea for the tree- which is three tonnes of stainless steel, three metres high and almost 4 metres wide- came to Colin Cawood-Campbell, Hospice head of fundraising. “For a long time we have wanted a special commemorative artwork within the Hospice grounds which would enable our patients’ families to remember their loved ones”, explains Colin. “We were introduced to Steve Mehdi who was really taken by the idea and are so grateful that his considerable skills offered freely have produced this stunning work of art for the Hospice.” The team were even more thrilled when in October, they learnt that they had been given a highly commended award at the

Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards in the charity of the year award, with their bid for garden landscaping to improve patient enjoyment. Christopher Duff, Rotherham Hospice chief executive explained, “The timing was perfect. This award now helps us get cracking with some of the hard landscaping around the newly-placed tree over the winter months ready for the launch in February” There are 300 leaves available which can be engraved on site at £100. They will stay on the tree for a year, after which they will be carefully removed and presented back to the donor in a special memorial box. Leaves can stay on the tree for 3 years for £250 and there will be a limited number of

‘lifetime leaves’ at £500 and bark panels for businesses to sponsor at £3000.” Hospice’s new head of marketing, Peter Bradley concluded, “Whichever way you chose to support the Tree of Life, you are helping the Hospice raise the £2 million donations it needs every year to be there for others at the time they need it most.” Leaves can now be bought online on the Hospice website www.rotherhamhospice.org.uk. Give your business a lift off Video is booming with experts suggesting that 74 per cent of online content will be video by 2017. a tiny fraction will have the credentials to offer a professional, legally compliant service so make sure the operator you’re planning on using has a Permission for Aerial Work which is issued by the Civil Aviation Authority. Even with a legally compliant operator, you could still fall foul so bear the following in mind: • Drones fitted with cameras must not be flown within 50 metres of people, vehicles, buildings or structures or over congested areas or large gatherings such as concerts and sports events One area helping to drive this more than most is the use of drones to capture stunning aerial footage and photos. The number of firms offering professional drone services trebled in 2015 alone. But what are the uses, what are the advantages, and what are the pitfalls that businesses need to look out for? Video production company Deadline Digital has a few handy tips. What are the uses for aerial video? • T he view - it sounds obvious, but the main reason most people turn to aerial video is to gain a better view of their subject with sectors such as construction, heritage, housing, education and leisure benefiting from the spectacular footage and incredible stability that drones offer. • Surveying - from roofing inspections to

crop and livestock surveys, a drone is the ultimate tool in efficiency.

• the weather (drones and rain don’t mix!) • you need landowner permission.

Advantages • T he class factor. Drone footage can add the wow factor to any video. • Health and safety - camera-equipped drones offer a much safer method of assessing hard-to-reach places such as a roof without risking ladder injuries. • P rice - hiring a drone operator is a lot cheaper than a full-blown helicopter.

Deadline Digital is a video production company based at Barnsley’s Digital Media Centre specialising in video journalism and aerial videography. It has a CAA licence and is fully insured for aerial work, having undertaken commissions for a range of public and private sector clients. FIND DEADLINE DIGITAL ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Here at VOOT we like to Keep IT Simple “When I launched VOOT in 2008 I did so with the intention of proving (to myself) that it was possible to establish a business that generates all of its sales from referrals and recommendations – and obviously repeat business from existing clients.” explains Nigel Short.

The Business Phone Experts

VOOT is nurturing a growing reputation locally for quality, impartial business telecoms advice. Initially established entirely to supply business mobiles, demands from our client base meant that we expanded into the delivery of landlines & calls, phone systems & broadband. Now the vast majority of our clients take more than one product from us, and most are allowing contracts to expire with existing suppliers in order to allow us to manage more. In April of 2014 we expanded our telecoms provision to include IT – with the addition of 3 quality IT technicians, to service primarily the education sector. We provide daily IT support, and equipment including interactive touchscreens and multipoint WiFi systems to over 1/3 of Rotherhams schools already, with expansion planned in 2016 to widen that to at least half of Rotherham schools and further afield into North Derbyshire, North Notts and beyond. To provide additional value to our clients we host a regular monthly networking meeting at Aston Hall Hotel – where we encourage them to share experiences and do business with other VOOT clients.

So, how are we doing on those referrals and recommendations? We receive many on a monthly basis, but we think this story sums it up; Around 3 years ago we received a referral to a London client from a local company who we had saved over £1000 a month, just on their landlines. The referral led to a contract to provide landlines to 18 offices nationwide, and savings so far of over £60k. That client has now placed an order for over 800 mobiles, and another saving of over £110k per annum on their existing spend! If you’d like to find out a little more about why we are receiving so many recommendations – give us a call. We’d be happy to put you in touch with some of our clients so you can ask them!

Are you restricting your business potential? We hear so often from businesses, “I’m too busy to take on an apprentice”, but an apprentice can be the additional resource you need to help you overcome busy periods and seek out new business opportunities. If you are too busy, you may be restricting your potential growth – perhaps you are unable to cope with customer demand, find the time to quote for work or get back to your customers in a timely manner. IT Desk here for your Windows worries Microsoft have announced that they won’t be rolling out Windows 7 on new laptops as of October 31st 2016. With Windows 8 pre-installs ending a few months earlier on June 30th 2016, this means only Windows 10 will be available to new computers from November 2016 onwards. So what do you need to do about this? If you are already running Windows 7 and 8, there’s no need to panic. General support and security updates are set to continue until January 10th 2020. Your current devices will carry on as they are. You just have to bear in mind that if you really like Windows 7 or 8 and want to buy a brand new laptop or computer using one of these older operating systems, you’ve got to act within the next ten months. If you are interested in upgrading your current system to Windows 10, the option

to upgrade for free is now available. And you can do this without making too much of a commitment to 10 as there is an option to downgrade back to 7 or 8 if you decide the new system isn’t for you. For help or advice about Windows, you can give IT Desk UK a call. We offer IT support around the country and are proud of our reputation amongst clients for the professionalism and the speed we deliver our services.
