Outgoing President, Paul Jagger, rounds up his term in office.

In writing my final contribution to the Bulletin I thought it would be interesting to have a look at my first contribution on appointment as your President two years ago. I laid out three challenges and I feel in terms of accountability, I ought to address these issues again. They were HS2, closer working of the Chambers in South Yorkshire and wider engagement with Chamber members. Firstly HS2 seems to have travelled backwards in my two years in office in that we no longer have the Meadowhall connection and the line has been moved eastwards. Further there is no meaningful proposal for a station in South Yorkshire on the mainline. I have therefore been engaged in arguing on behalf the Chamber for a proper Parkway station South Yorkshire in order to maximize the benefits of the line to the whole of the region and not just the station proposed in Sheffield which is essentially a branch line from the mainline. We in Barnsley and Rotherham have always argued in favour of HS2 but it is meaningless to South Yorkshire without a proper well-connected park way link. With regards to closer working for the South Yorkshire Chambers I have expended considerable amount of time on this issue and we’ve only been able to make

modest progress. Both the local authorities the LEP and other institutions constantly advises that closer working will make it easier to work with us, this point we acknowledge and clearly understand. We have been able to work together in a fairly informal structure but it has been a bit hit and miss it times. A real solution in the future has to be found that has the support and backing of all the chambers within South Yorkshire. You might well therefore be invited to appraise me in terms of the modest progress that has being made. On a more positive note I have been able to engage with and meet a number of Chamber members during my term in office and it’s always been a very enjoyable experience which enabled me to understand many of our members and the way they exploit the opportunities this region has to offer.

in the years to come on behalf of business in Barnsley and Rotherham.

Looking at the present environment post BREXIT something most of us didn’t expect, it remains a challenge and an opportunity that we will need to be working on very closely

As is the tradition for returning presidents I will remain on the board for further a two years and I will give my maximum effort and contribution to helping Lisa Pogson our incoming president, in any way necessary .I would like to say thank you to all the people who have worked with me during my term of office and thank you for your help and support. I’ve enjoyed my two years and I hope despite the above I brought a little something extra to the work and the development of Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber thank you.

New Chamber Website Launched

Here at the Chamber of Commerce we continue to strive to be at the forefront of our Digital offering. The new website has been developed in WordPress, which is one of the most user friendly Content Management Systems on the market, this will allow us to easily maintain and keep the site up to date so we can always provide our members and users with relevant content and the latest business news. Last year we revamped our Social Media offering, developed and launched our bespoke app and most recently we made the decision to change the format of ‘The Bulletin’ to an on-line publication.

With our members in mind we’ve further developed the “My Acount” section so that members to be able to customize their own Business Directory listing along with a new feature which allows members to submit their news articles directly to us

through the login platform. We’ve also added a new feature within our events and training section so that users can download our full calendar, or export a single event/training date direct to their calendars so that you’ll never miss a date again. The design is clear and easy to navigate, not only enhancing the overall usability of the site but also making it an enjoyable experience in the process. Feel free to have a look at the new site and please let us know your feedback .

For 2016, we made the decision to start looking at our website’s and the value they add to our members as well the wider business community. Over the last few months we have been working on a new site which was launched at our exhibition in September. The new website has a fully responsive design, perfectly resizing to fit any device type, meaning visitors to our site can now enjoy the optimal browsing experience navigating pages at ease on any device they choose. This element completely eliminates the need to zoom, rotate or resize the website regardless of whether it is accessed on desktop, tablet or mobile.

Exhibition brings together the region’s businesses This year’s Means Business exhibition was held at Oakwell Stadium in Barnsley, where Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber welcomed numerous businesses and individuals to this high profile venue. The exhibition (sponsored by Enterprising Barnsley, Barnsley College, Segmentation Group and Business Fire Safety) took place on Thursday 15th September, providing business people from across the region the opportunity to meet exhibitors, make new contacts and attend FREE seminars. Over 50 local businesses, from a broad spectrum of industries and markets, exhibited at the event to promote the excellent work they are doing within the region. The seminar programme started with Cllr. Sir Steve Houghton, who gave an overview of the work that was been carried out in Barnsley Town Centre. This was then followed by Barnsley College and the Business Fire Safety awareness project. During the day a number of stadium tours hosted by former Barnsley FC player, Barry Murphy, took place, which gave a behind the scenes look at the club and stadium.

Shane Young, Membership Executive said: “The 2016 Means Business exhibition was a sell-out. We’d like thank the 50 exhibitors and all the visitors for their continued support with this event. It clearly shows the importance of events like this and the power of networking. “The exhibition gives members and the business community the opportunity to

Chamber Launches Testimonial Videos Eight Chamber members provided a video testimonial of the membership services and their thoughts of these. Here at the Chamber we work tirelessly for our members to provide a service and value for money in membership fees. In light of this, who better to give us a testimonial on the Chamber than our members themselves. We have produced a series of member testimonial videos, with the help of Stuart from Turner Media, highlighting the services we offer, from our Membership to Events and Training, along with acknowledging our hard working staff. Members who provided testimonials, including Diamond members Andy Bethel of CSP Systems and Diane Wainwright of The Source Skills Academy, gave a view into the services and how they’ve helped their company.

You can view the Chamber YouTube channel by searching ‘Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce’ in the YouTube search bar. The power of video with a marketing campaign and ongoing plan is now not only common place but essential. We film a lot of our events and produce a video to use for marketing future events, these can all be seen on our popular You Tube channel along with our members testimonial videos.

CHAMBER NEWS

The Yorkshire Man of Steel has come a long way from its humble beginnings In 2008 the iconic Tinsley Cooling Towers were being demolished. They were held in great affection by many people who were saddened by their demise. Lots of imaginative ideas emerged about what might replace them, but by then a deep economic recession had taken hold and there was little appetite for a new landmark.

In this time of uncertainty a local artist called Steve Mehdi came up with an idea to create a landmark sculpture called the ‘Man of Steel’. It was based on his experiences as an ex-steelworker and the people he worked with and as the project gained traction it broadened into a wider concept. Rotherham Council added their support and granted planning permission, placing it high on their list of priorities for regeneration and growth in the region. Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce added their support and soon there were others, like; Billington Holdings PLC, Hambleton Steel, Steelphalt, BHP Chartered Accountants, Blenhiem Park Developments, Constant Security Services Ltd, FCC Environment, Freeths Solicitors, IFM Insurance, Lincoln Electric, Maher Ltd, Mayflower Engineering Ltd, Mott MacDonald, Newburgh Engineering, Outokumpu, Performance Engineered Solutions Ltd, ProCo Print, RiDO Rotherham, Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, Sheffield City Region LEP, Sheffield Hallam University, Sheffield

University, the AMRC, SH Structures, Tool and Steel Products Ltd, Whistle Video, We Are Branding, 23 Legal, and 3volution LLP. The Heritage Lottery Fund added their support earlier this year and plans are now well under way to fulfil an ambitious dream to build an icon for the region everyone can be proud of.

Maltby Academy: ‘Ready for Business’ The power of the influence of business and industry on young people, their families and professionals in schools, cannot be underestimated. The ability to engage and inspire children from an early age to develop employability skills, nurture their talent and shape their future progression routes, is key component to helping maximise their achievement in school. A high performing 11-18 school, within an innovative Multi Academy Trust with four partner primaries, our aim is to provide an inspirational learning experience through which young people and adults develop the confidence, resilience and desire to be the very best. We want all young people to acknowledge and celebrate their skills, personal qualities and achievements and secure positive progression routes enabling them to be competitive in a global employment market.’ Successes at Maltby come in many forms, and all of the 1200 students at Maltby Academy are encouraged to strive to reach their full potential and celebrate their many achievements. This summer saw students from Year 11 and Year 13 celebrate the best ever exam results, well above both academic and vocational national benchmarks. As a school that is featured on a national stage, students are encouraged to study a diverse and broad curriculum which is underpinned by the highest quality of teaching and learning. All students enjoy learning in the state of the art facilities including the FA Sports Partnership funded sports facilities

and 4G pitch, which is home to the SY Soccer schools 2014-16 league winners. Further to the academic provision, students are offered high quality enrichment and career inspired opportunities, including; learning directly about the workplace from STEM ambassadors; engaging with employers at our STEM and Apprenticeship careers fairs; as well as invaluable work inspiration activities in both YR 10 and YR 12, several of which have led directly to employment. Recruitment into the Sixth Form is strong, with students from schools across the Rotherham and Doncaster areas having chosen to join the Maltby Academy Sixth Form. The primary destination for progression is onto further education at a broad range of both regional and national universities, including globally recognized Russell Group and international HE institutions. Over 75% of Yr 13 students will be enrolling onto university courses this autumn whilst many others have secured highly sought after and competitive apprenticeships with internationally re-known employers. When opportunity knocks, Maltby Academy students don’t hesitate to seize the moment. Through recent partnership work with the University of Sheffield, a group of Year 8 and Year 12 scientists successfully showcased their ”Secret Life of Birds” project at the highly prestigious

Royal Society Science exhibition in London. Ambition and entrepreneurship are fundamental to the vision and values of Maltby Academy, a school that has high expectations of its youngsters, develops personal skills and inspires a strong work ethic. Believing wholeheartedly, that Maltby students are as good if not better than any other student. With an alumnus that includes many of our recent graduate teachers, Maltby Academy is looking to develop a bright future of prospective employment for all learners within its community and is looking forward to forging more links with local industry and employers. Academy Principal, Rachel Nash says, “We value the involvement of the world of business and higher education in our learning community. Seeing students being inspired by opportunities bring and relevance and context to their learning in the classroom. We want to engage with as many different partners as possible and are looking forward to working with the Young Chamber to extend the possibilities.”

Championing workplace health and wellbeing.

Sheffield based health and wellbeing provider, Westfield Health, have launched a new Wellness Programme for employers looking to take a more proactive approach to the health and wellbeing of their staff. Partnering with Sheffield Hallam University, who’ve been delivering this academically proven programme to their own staff for over 10 years, this innovative concept goes a step beyond traditional health screening, combining an assessment with behavioural change techniques – to help deliver long term results. Staff attend an assessment, at a location chosen by the employer, based on 6 key areas around current health, lifestyle and fitness. Rather than seeking ill health, the programme is designed to illustrate current health levels

and uses motivational interview techniques to identify small, positive lifestyle changes which, over time, could make a substantial and sustainable difference to peoples’ health. Following staff assessments, employers receive a report which gives a clear picture of the overall health and wellbeing of the company. Any issues that are identified can then be acted on with the delivery of relevant Wellness Workshops covering both physical and mental health, and wellbeing topics. Working studies have already shown that by implementing the Wellness Programme in

the workplace, employers can expect to see a highly favourable ROI, reduced sickness absence and significant improvements in staff health as well as a feeling of being more valued at work.

BCC: Better balance needed between cutting deficit and supporting growth • • •

Public sector net borrowing, excluding public sector banks, fell by £0.9 billion in August 2016 compared with August 2015. Public sector net borrowing, excluding public sector banks, fell by £4.9 billion in the current financial year compared with the same period in 2015. Public sector net debt, excluding public sector banks, at the end of August 2016 was 83.6% of GDP “In the upcoming Autumn Statement, it is vital that the new fiscal framework has the flexibility to meet changing economic conditions and deliver a better balance between cutting the deficit and supporting growth. This must include bolstering the UK’s tax base through measures to increase business investment, and using historically low borrowing costs for much needed investment in infrastructure.”

Commenting on the public sector finances for August 2016, published today by the ONS, Suren Thiru, Head of Economics at the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), said: “Although government borrowing fell in August, it was by less than many had expected. “If the UK economy slows as we expect, cutting the deficit is likely to become increasingly problematic as materially weaker growth will make it more difficult to generate tax revenue.

Business Fire Safety South Yorkshire is right on target Funded by the South Yorkshire Fire Authority and working in partnership with South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, the Business Fire Safety project has been supporting small and medium enterprises in reducing the risk and impact of fire on their business premises across South Yorkshire. To date, in excess of 180 businesses have received support, and fire safety awareness has been raised for over 800 employees. This free initiative has provided guidance, business toolkits and links to opportunities to develop skills throughout, assisting businesses to manage their fire safety obligations under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. Businesses have also benefited from the accreditation scheme and the Business Fire Safety app available on Apple and

Google app stores. The project has been promoted at various events in South Yorkshire with seminars and masterclasses taking place to pass on valuable knowledge about fire safety and improve the working environments of organisations across South Yorkshire. The funded part of the project has now come to an end, though the Chamber will continue to assist businesses with fire sa fety support, toolkits and signposting to relevant services where assistance is requested.

Fans campaigned to raise £20,000 for endangered Sheffield Eagles Sheffield Eagles’ raised more than £12,500 in seven days to help keep the club alive once the season ends in October, with a goal of £20,000 achieved within three weeks. An unnamed investor has promised his support to the rugby league club. But his funding, including a new stadium costing up to £7 million, depends on whether he receives approval for a £35 million biomass power plant. This cannot be gained before the club’s end-of-season deadline, so the supporters have rallied to raise money to help sustain the club until the takeover, which has been proposed for November. The fundraising page was set up by lifelong supporter Nicky Swire. She said: “We’re overwhelmed by the response from fellow fans and the local community, and we’re hopeful it might be a bit of a catalyst for other

investment from the region to help keep the club going.” The Eagles face going into administration and an uncertain future if financial support is not secured.

Charity uses £3,000 donation to raise awareness SAFE@LAST, delighted winners of the 2015 Charity of the Year award, have taken delivery of thousands of USB wristbands to distribute to vulnerable young people. The charity provides services and support for children and young people in South Yorkshire who are at risk of harm before, during and after running away. They’ve utilized the £3000 prize money received with the 2015 Charity of the Year award, donated by DuoCall, to purchase the wristbands which will be distributed to children and young people across the borough. The branded wristbands promote the SAFE@LAST helpline which young people can call, text or web chat with if they are thinking about, or have, run away from home. The wristbands also include data and links with information for young people to find further support. They will be given out through their Education and Prevention Project which works in schools to educate

and inform children and young people about the risks and dangers of running away and where they can get support. The project reaches upwards of 30,000 children and young people each year. SAFE@LAST Director of Children and Young People’s Services Tracy Haycox commented: “We know that each year around 100,000 children and young people in the UK run away from home or care. In 2014/2015 South Yorkshire Police alone received reports of 2,109 children going missing. We also know that running away or going missing is recognised as a symptom that something is not well in a child’s life. When things go wrong young people do not always know how, or feel able, to ask for help. Instead, many of them run away from

home or care and become exposed to great risks in order to survive. Leaving a piece of merchandise, like these USB wristbands, with a young person displaying SAFE@LAST contact details as a physical reminder of our visit and information is incredibly valuable and young people that call our helpline to ask for support often say they have the number because of the wristband.”

New Chief Executive for Rotherham Titans - A letter from Richard Lamb

The summer is now truly over, & the rugby season will by the time you read this have started! The Titans have gone through a number of changes off the field this close season, with a new dynamic Board & owners & myself taking over as Chief Executive.

I am based in South West London, so many will be asking why my interest in running a Yorkshire club? It is simple - the opportunity to be part of shaping a great club for the future. One of the immediate challenges we faced is making clear for fans & commercials partners what the club has to offer & the relevance it plays in people lives. Rugby is a brand that has all the core values that you would want as fan, business & partner. We have tried to embrace the dynamic way people engage with sports brands in terms of our change of logo & by embracing social media through our website, twitter& facebook communication. Titans play in a national competition & too often we fail to communicate that opportunity to our commercial partners.

Our partnership with Prostate Cancer is a clear demonstration that we offer that national platform. The way our current partners have bought into this is fantastic.

To help drive the Titans brand we have also looked at ways that people can engage without always having to come to the Stafforce Stadium. We have entered a number of 7s tournaments this year (20/20 of rugby). This gives all partners access to a younger audience & haves proved a goldmine in finding new emerging talent. Our planned youth development at under 18s will help drive this even more. It is an exciting time to be a Titan – it would be great to chat to you.

Best Regards, Richard Lamb

Questions to Consider When Creating Your Disaster Recovery Plan The Importance of a tailored Data Protection and Backup System We all know that at some point your data is going to be in danger, be that due to Ransomware (CryptoLocker which is prevalent at the time of writing), a machine error, a virus, a Natural Disaster or more likely ‘someone’ simply deletes something that they shouldn’t. Sooner or later, we’re all in a situation where we risk losing some or all of our data. Most disaster recovery plans rely on File and Folder backup of critical files, failing to consider the importance and time involved in recovering the System Files and Applications (Full Imaging Backup). Are file and folder backups going to save

When disaster strikes the key objective is to recover as fast and fully as possible, but without a Full Image Backup, all System Files and Applications that are critical to speedy recovery need to be rebuilt.

Systems or Both?

Recovery of data files without the application that runs them is of little benefit. Day to day data losses such as data files being deleted or corrupting are recoverable quickly, however incidents that affect your IT infrastructure more severely don’t discriminate between data and applications. In the event of an actual disaster, the entire system including applications, users and user permissions etc will be gone as well.

A true “disaster recovery” system ensures that systems and applications, as well as data are duplicated both On and Off Site and are available for recovery as Bare Metal Restore (to dissimilar hardware) and this should be a service delivered by the provider.

Not all solutions will handle both Physical and Virtual machines and rather than have multiple solutions, it may be better to standardise on one solution that covers both.

How Can Your Business Recover? It is of course important to backup off-site, however this can bring another challenge in recovering data from the remote location. When operations are disrupted by a server failure for example, recovering data, applications and system files over the internet can be painfully slow. If there is no internet connectivity, off-site information will be unavailable no matter how well it is backed up. Again if it is a File and Folder Backup then fileby-file recovery, even with on-site availability, is still a time-consuming process and the server will need to be rebuilt to include the Users and User Permissions etc. How long will this take? MARKETING FOCUS

Marketing Focus Seeing the big picture is an essential leadership quality but it’s no use if you fail to spot the nuts and bolts are loose. So many businesses are wrapped up in their brand and performance that they overlook the fine detail. As a communications business, here at Cream we’re a little bit obsessed with attention to detail. Not everyone has to be as meticulous as us, but basic spelling, grammar and punctuation really should be a priority. Spelling mistakes and sloppy English speaks volumes. Even the most expensive and dynamic website won’t save you if your homepage is littered with typos. Communication fails just seem to jump out and I know many other businesspeople who make business decisions based on the fine detail. Whether a company gets our name incorrect or fails to spell correctly in its own communication, the reaction is to mentally strike this company from our supplier list. Harsh maybe? But if a company can’t get the small things correct, how can I be confident it’s got a proper steer on the big stuff? Yes, a business decision can come down to a comma. It can come down to inappropriate language. Text speak in emails? UR kidding! The most innocuous communication can deliver the biggest impact in a good and bad way.

In recruitment, it’s absolutely critical. A poorly worded application will be struck out very early. Taking the time to check who you are addressing (Dear Sir won’t get you anywhere) and checking your application and CV for errors is essential.

Equally, a sloppy advert or weak description of your ideal candidate can damage your business’s reputation. The ability to see the big picture is crucial. But, please, not at the expense of fine detail. www.creamconsultancy.co.uk

INTERNATIONAL TRADE

NEW Department for International Trade

The new department has been created only a few months ago in July following changes in Government. DIT has overall responsibility for promoting British trade across the world. It will develop, coordinate and deliver a new trade policy for the UK, including preparing for and then negotiating Free Trade Agreements and market access deals with non-EU countries. The new department will be a specialised body with significant new trade negotiating capacity.

It will take on the responsibilities of UK Trade and Investment, the relevant trade functions of the former Department for Business Innovation and Skills; and take on responsibility for UK Export Finance. UK’s Biggest Export Directory Have you signed up yet? The UK’s 5 major high street banks pledge to work with the new Department for International Trade to transform access to UK business exports. The Directory will link UK companies with contacts from around the world. Potential customers and buyers from global markets will be able to search for companies from across the whole of the UK which are ready to supply the products, services and skills they need. The directory heralds an incredible opportunity for the UK economy and is part of wider government plans for a more digital service that will provide a world-leading platform for British businesses and the UK economy. The government and banks see this unique collaboration as the critical first stage

in creating a ground-breaking service, aiming to make the UK the easiest place in the world from which to start exporting. Further details of the service will be revealed as the offer develops in advance of its launch in November 2016. Business customers of the 5 banks will be encouraged to join the directory and take advantage of this exciting opportunity to promote themselves in lucrative global markets.
