Chamber View Chief Executive, Andrew Denniff brings you right up to date with the Chamber and its plans, hopes and expectations for the next few months.

As most of us settle back after the summer break the Chamber enters its busiest period of the year, with a number of key events to focus on.

04

All the latest news from inside the Chamber.

10

You will see in the main body of this edition the annual Business Awards at the Metrodome in Barnsley will be quickly upon us and the Chamber Means Business event at Tankersley will provide us with a wonderful opportunity to showcase what the Chamber and many of our members have to offer.

agenda. An improved transport infrastructure across the north of England is essential to the our region’s economic growth, just as the importance in getting a clear view from all of us on the benefits derived from Meadowhall being the preferred site for a South Yorkshire station on the proposed HS2 route is essential.

These two occasions provide the cornerstones for a packed season of events that will give all our members the opportunity to engage widely and talk about their businesses with each other. I look forward to seeing you over the next few weeks and hearing about your achievements and plans for the future.

There will also be big challenges in attracting the inward investment we need into the region, whilst also encouraging and supporting those businesses already here.

15

The economy may be starting to look a little better as we head into the second half of 2014, but this in itself creates new problems. We need to not only work much more collaboratively across the region, but also recognise and accept that our objectives must be to focus on what is best for the whole city region.

18

Away from our events programme, the Chamber’s plans are to enhance our strategic influence across the region by developing some long standing views on a number of key issues. The new Regional Growth Hub is a key project in which the Chamber needs to play its part and also make sure that a lot of the work we already do in supporting business is recognised and can be reflected in what the Hub has to offer. Trans-Pennine connectivity and the opportunities for the whole city region around HS2 must also be at the top of our policy

Recognising the best in business The 2014 Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards are almost upon us and the interest this year has been high. We’ve had many entries again this year and as Chief Executive, Andrew Denniff hoped, we may be looking at a record-breaking year once we meet the deadline.

Prizes will be awarded to a shortlist of five, with an overall winner receiving a cash prize of £3000 and the title of Chamber Charity of the Year. This award has been sponsored by The Real Steakhouse who have kindly donated the £3000 prize money.

It has been good to see that amongst the entries this year, are many new names, particularly in the two new categories; Outstanding Retailer of the Year and Digital and Creativity in Business.

Along with the Charity of the Year Award, the Chamber will also award local companies celebrating significant milestones via the Salute to Business Award.

The number of entries and the new companies shows a real optimism in the region and the judges will have a tough time choosing a shortlist of five to go through to the ceremony on the 17th October. Entering your business for an award may be challenging but being shortlisted brings great benefits. Not only does it provide the obvious profile in local media, they are also a way to recognise the achievements of your staff, build positive recognition and add value to your brand for your customers, it is also, quite simply, a great accolade for your business. The deadline for entries is fast approaching, so if you haven’t already, you still have a short time to enter. The event this year is supported by a number of local businesses including overall sponsor, Solar Europa and we are grateful

Tickets are now available for this year’s ceremony taking place at the Barnsley Metrodome, Friday 17th October 2014, so join us for a fabulous evening of entertainment, good food and of course in recognising our regions best in business.

Top Award for Laser Cutting Specialists A well-executed growth strategy together with innovative investments and creative flair has seen Barnsley-based Cutting Technologies scoop the top award at the Sheffield City Region business awards held at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre.

The laser cutting and engraving specialists clinched the Top SME/ Business award, following on from the company’s success at the 2013 Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards. On collecting the award, Cutting Technologies’ director Jane Robinson said: “To be named Top SME in the whole of the Sheffield City Region is a great honour and a credit to the whole Cutting Technologies team. “They have worked unbelievably hard over the past year to win new business, diversify our offering and ensure our reputation goes before us. The calibre of the companies shortlisted was incredibly

high so winning this award is superb recognition of the team’s efforts and achievements over the past few years.” The award was presented to Cutting Technologies by John Collier, Chief Executive at Pera Consulting who said: “I was thrilled to be able to present Cutting Technologies with their Top SME/Business Award, especially as they are one of our Manufacturing Advisory Service clients. “This is an area full of business vitality and imagination with SMEs capable of driving sales, creating new jobs and breaking into supply chains far beyond the city region.”

The Sheffield City Region Business Awards takes winners from six of the region’s business awards, including the Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards, to contest for top honours at a regional level. Cutting Technologies were double winners at last year’s awards, walking away with the Business Growth Award and the Excellence in Manufacturing Award. These awards led to the company’s nomination for the Top SME/Business Award at this year’s City Region competition.

Burning issue for businesses Employees in every organisation need to be happy and healthy to perform at their best and protect the business bottom line. But a combination of increased work pressures and easy access to email thanks to smartphone technology is leaving many at risk of the latest workplace threat – employee burnout. Symptoms include stress, exhaustion and lack of motivation. A recent Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) study found that more than 90 per cent of managers work outside their contracted hours, with almost half working an extra day of unpaid overtime per week. ILM chief executive Charles Elvin said: “When you add up all the skipped lunch breaks, early morning conference calls and after hours emails, you see just how

widespread the extra hours culture is within UK business.” Westfield Health sales and marketing director Paul Shires said: “Our own Big Work Survey revealed nearly two thirds (64 per cent) of employees are stressed at work. “Our Chamber Primary Health Plan includes a full Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), providing access to a 24 hour counselling and advice line, as well as face to face counselling and cognitive behavioural therapy sessions.” According to research from the EAP Association, nearly 70 per cent of people who used an EAP recovered or improved following counselling.

Spotlight on Yorkshire Everyone will know that in July this year Yorkshire welcomed the Tour de France and it was watched by millions across the world but what impact has it had on the region and did local businesses benefit? Yorkshire’s Grand Depart was hailed as the “greatest ever” with millions of people lining the route across the two days to show their support, along with the immense television coverage across 188 countries with British Eurosport posting a 60% rise in the average live audience compared with 2013. It was clear that the tour was popular but to what gain has millions of viewers achieved? Research conducted by ResearchBods has shown that more than 1/3 of the UK’s population had their opinions of Yorkshire positively changed and now 1/4 of the country are now wanting to visit the county.

Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire said, “The passion, the crowds and the support that Yorkshire demonstrated for the Tour to the watching world were mind-blowing. The economic benefit to the country is being conservatively estimated to be in excess of £100m, but could well be more” The feedback locally the Chamber has received is the Tour brought positive returns for the leisure industry, with hotel bookings up and food retailers benefiting and there was also a boost for Barnsley town centre whilst celebrating with their 100 day festival.

Some of our members also experienced a direct benefit thanks to the tour, Cutting Technologies were able to demonstrate their skills by providing gold laser cut lettering helping to turn Langsett Le Hub into a Hollywood-esque backdrop and Barnsley based PR Agency, Cream, won a contract from Barnsley Council to deliver the PR for the Barnsley region. Rotherham businesses didn’t miss out either, Rotherham manufacturers ZND provided pedestrian barriers lining the route and Templeborough’s Sign Express showcased their talents by turning the University Arts Tower yellow.

New Training Partnership The Chamber and AAT (The Association of Accounting Technicians) are working together to offer a range of short courses for essential business accounting knowledge. The one day courses, Budgeting for Small Business, Managing Cash flow – keeping your business healthy and Finance for nonfinancial managers, have been designed for business people without an accounting and finance background, to help them to manage their day to day business financial needs. Mark Hannigan, Operations Manager at the Chamber commented on the new courses, “The AAT Essentials courses are short but

highly informative which is what today’s businesses want. The courses are AAT accredited and we are the only providers delivering the essentials package in South Yorkshire, and it’s because we saw the need for our members” The courses are priced VAT for members and available for package courses are also available company’s premises.

Growth Hub Andrew Denniff explains what the City Region Growth Hub is and its opportunities for the future.

“Originally to support the potential of the 44,000 business operating across our local economy and to attract potential inward investors to look at the opportunities available within the Sheffield City region, a ‘Growth Hub’ was first put forward as an idea within the LEP’s Strategic Plan, formulated over a year ago. Locally many businesses have described the present support landscape as “confusing and inefficient, with little coordination between national, regional or local offers and indeed the organisations that provide them”. As many of us know within the Chamber network, this frustration is reflected in many of our discussions with our members who are simply trying to do what is best for themselves and their businesses. The “postcode lottery” of business support is a barrier to growth, and inconsistent with the principles of a city region working within a functional economic area. What the ‘Growth Hub’ offers is the potential for a single point of entry for any business across the region to access the level of support, advice or guidance they require to develop and grow their business. For this to work however the initial point of contact must be local to the business concerned. As mentioned previously, the current diverse network of assistance needs to be coordinated properly and a working structure of practical signposting to the most relevant and appropriate point of real help put in its place. This does not mean a growing level of new bureaucracy to support the already under pressure publicly funded business advisors and their associated support services.

I might suggest that what we really need is something along the following lines: Some kind of local access to the growth hub - certainly Chambers of Commerce have been there for many years and could be that point of access, this coupled with a central contact number that if appropriate can refer to local support. There would also have to be some shared specialist, regional resource potentially hosted by local authorities, but commissioned from the private sector. With a framework from which we can supplement resources where needed

for very specific interventions in such areas as start-ups, export, high growth or investment opportunities. The fact is that the Chamber wants to play its part in the ‘Growth Hub’ as we feel that we have plenty to offer. Like many other organisations across the region we will continue to work with many businesses, as we have done for over a hundred years. By combining all our strengths and working sensibly we have an opportunity to make this work – we must not simply regard it as a ‘funding opportunity’ to duplicate a lot of what is already out there.”

Construction student builds competition success A Barnsley College Construction student has been awarded second place in the Senior category of the Guild of Bricklayers competition. Bricklaying Apprentice Reece Tuffnell, 18, from Shiregreen in Sheffield, was presented with a trophy from the Guild of Bricklayers after the competition. Competitors were judged on their speed, accuracy and the appearance of a test wall which they had to build in six hours from drawings that were provided on the day. Reece competed against students from ten colleges in the Yorkshire region and earned second place due to his bricklaying skills in levelling, measuring and interpreting drawings; all of which he has learnt at Barnsley College and at Luke’s Brickwork where he works.

John Mellor, Bricklaying tutor at Barnsley College, said: “It’s a brilliant achievement for Reece. The competition wasn’t easy and his bricklaying skills were put to the test but Reece kept calm and held a positive and professional attitude. I would like to congratulate him.” Reece added: “I enjoyed taking part in the competition as it really made me think about how to use my skills effectively. The tutors at College, together with my employers, have been brilliant, giving me expert advice which definitely helped me in the competition.”

Carillion receives Gold Level Award for its support of the Armed Forces Leading support services company Carillion has been praised for its commitment to the Armed Forces, with the presentation of a Gold Level Award under the Ministry of Defence’s new Employer Recognition Scheme. The scheme has been designed to offer public thanks and acknowledgement to companies like Carillion that have demonstrated particular support to the Armed Forces - by signing the government’s Corporate Covenant, for example. Carillion is committed to being a genuine partner to the MOD and, as such, has promised its support in a number of ways, for example the company has set itself the target of recruiting 300 Reservists by the end of 2016. Carillion actively encourages Reserve Service and has changed its HR policy to allow Reservists to take two additional weeks paid leave during the year. The value that veterans can bring to the workplace is highly regarded by Carillion and the company currently employs in the region of 400 former service personnel. EXTERNAL AFFAIRS

The need for better trans-Pennine links – Is HS3 the solution? Clive Watkinson, Chair of the Chamber Transport working group provides an update on the idea of a Northern Hub. The Chamber’s transport working group has been pushing for better trans-Pennine links for many years and in the last 6 months this hard work has paid off with the Department for Transport agreeing to a feasibility study of trans-Pennine traffic. In our view, trans-Pennine links fall into three categories: Leeds to Manchester, Sheffield to Manchester, and Hull to Liverpool (freight). It can be argued that the Leeds to Manchester links would already be pretty good if you stopped cars from South Yorkshire utilising the M62 and reduced road freight between the Humber ports and Liverpool. Thus, by creating better coast to coast and South Yorkshire to Manchester travel links, any Leeds to Manchester congestion is solved by default.

The natural way to remove freight traffic and particularly container traffic is by utilising the railways and to this end your transport working group has long advocated the re-opening of the Woodhead rail route, although not necessarily using the existing tunnels. The aforementioned feasibility study evaluates South Yorkshire to Manchester road and rail links. The routes under review include the A57 (Snake), A628 (Woodhead), A635 (Holmfirth) roads and the Hope Valley railway line. The study does not include the M62. The Chamber’s current view is that, whilst we support any improvements to the Hope Valley rail line, this is never going to be a major rail link due to its route through

the Peak District national park and the planning restrictions that go with that. We therefore strongly support the re-opening of a Woodhead tunnel, preferably with a road tunnel in addition to rail. This brings me on to talk of HS3. The simple fact is this – “HS3 is no more than a general idea to improve rail links between Leeds and Manchester.” The current time for this journey is 49 minutes; HS3 would cut it to approximately 30 minutes. Investment in the North is to be welcomed, however I’ll leave it up to you whether you think knocking 19 minutes off the Leeds to Manchester journey time is the best use of this investment.

Rotherham MPs Breakfast Meeting Once again the Chamber, as the leading business representation organisation in Barnsley and Rotherham, is hosting a breakfast meeting with the two Rotherham Members of Parliament: Kevin Barron MP and John Healey MP. This gives members of the Chamber the opportunity to discuss, quiz and debate key issues pertinent to local businesses and the wider economy with the decision makers at national level. The event will take place at the Best Western

What our members said about TransPennine links: “Over the last three years the main road route between Sheffield and Manchester, the A628 Woodhead Pass, has had to be completely closed on 27 occasions and partly closed seven times, due to a combination of road traffic accidents and bad weather, the A57 Snake Pass suffers even more disruption, we need a sensible conclusion to help link these two great northern cities”

David Clarkson Managing Director - DBL Logistics

“The main problem is the variability of journey times - if you don’t know whether crossing the Pennines will take 1 hour or 3 hours you always have to plan for 3 hours which increases wage costs”

Mike Smith Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (FCILT).

“Providing attractive and efficient links between northern economic centres will support the foundations for business growth and long-term economic stability. Enhancements through a well-connected passenger and freight network will ensure that northern city regions have direct access to international gateways. This will improve the North’s access to other UK and global markets.”

Town Centre Update Better Barnsley Barnsley Council has announced exciting proposals for a future-proof, new look town centre. New town square – Expected October 2016

New central library – Expected early 2017

A new landscaped public square where routes into the town centre meet. The square will be large enough for market stalls and public events, and will look into the refurbished indoor market.

Proposed for location on Mayday Green, this state of the art building will be a hub for community activity.

Revamped metropolitan centre and market hall – Expected early 2017 Bright and open, this newly refurbished space will create flow between outdoor and indoor shopping, and easier to get to for shoppers and businesses. New shopping boulevard – Expected 2017 By extending Lambra Road there’ll be a new route behind the redeveloped indoor markets with new shopping and leisure opportunities.

New car parking – Expected November 2015 High quality, safe, bright, and easy to access open-air car parking, with plenty of spaces. The scheme will attract significant private sector investment. It will provide an opportunity for jobs to be safeguarded, and for additional jobs to be created. Funding for the scheme is being provided by the council from monies raised through capital receipts in recent asset and land sales, as well as existing borrowing and approvals. The money spent on the scheme will have

no impact on the council’s revenue budget or ability to maintain its essential services. This scheme, combined with additional public realm improvements and the development of a brand new college building, brings the total town centre investment to £57 million. Work on the major scheme will start in early 2015. There will be an ongoing consultation and collaboration process as the council develops more detailed plans, to make sure the needs of local people, businesses and potential investors are taken into account. There will be regular Facebook and Twitter updates, user surveys, workshops, and a town centre drop-in-shop where people can view and comment on the proposals.

Melett wins Queen’s Award for Enterprise for the third time Melett is recognised as the leading global brand in the development, manufacture and supply of quality replacement turbocharger parts to the professional aftermarket. After winning the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2006 and then 2009, Melett is delighted to add 2014 to the list. The Queen’s Award for Enterprise is the most prestigious accolade for businesses and individuals in the United Kingdom. To receive the International Trade Award, a company must show a substantial and sustained increase in export over three consecutive 12-month periods, to a level which is outstanding for the products and services concerned, and for the size of the organisation. Founded in 1995, Melett was acquired in 2002 by the current owner and Managing Director, Ian Warhurst - a Chartered Mechanical Engineer and member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. The business, and its’ success, is built on

strong engineering principles and strict quality control processes with all parts being engineered in the UK. In a rapidly developing global market, Melett has seen strong growth in recent years as it has supported the development of its customer base. In order to keep ahead Melett has invested heavily in its premises and manufacturing facilities, supply chain, distribution, product database and employees. This investment has included the opening of new operations in North America, Latin America, China and Europe as well as significant expansion at its UK facilities.

Whilst the business is headquartered in the UK, the majority of Melett’s sales are to overseas customers. Melett has exported to over 100 countries, including all except two of the countries in the EU. Melett does not view the European market as a particularly difficult one to operate in and considers it as part of its home market. Expansion further afield has required significant commitment to researching markets, understanding cultures and building relationships with key partners. With significant growth forecast for the global turbocharger market for years to come Melett is well placed to continue its own growth story.

The website details information about the exhibition, exclusive offers for Chamber members, exhibitor and attendee information – all while also acting as an information sharing platform. Mark Hannigan, Operations Manager at the Chamber said “The annual exhibition

has proved to be a success for us and our members. Now in its third year, we are seeing interest and demand increasing for profile at the event. “The benefits of inter-trading for our membership has always been clear and we felt this needed to be taken to the next level. With the event growing in popularity and serving the purpose ‘to do business’ it seemed logical to marry the two together” Mark added, “We have had a great response so far for both the event and the new website and we are looking forward to where it heads next!” The site has been designed and created in partnership with Chamber member Castus.

Barnsley Accountants celebrate 30th Anniversary Over the past thirty years, Cudworth-based Thorntons Accountants has provided financial and business advice to many Barnsley-based entrepreneurs, but during the late 1980s and 1990s the company used much of its expertise to help ex-miners use the skills they had developed in the colliery to establish successful businesses of their own. Today, many of those fledgling businesses have gone on to become household names in their respective industries and as a result, Thorntons has grown from a business employing just one accountant in 1984 to a busy practice with ten full time members, including three partners. Gavin Spencer, Steve Heeley and Mathew Parsons all began their careers as trainees with the firm, steadily progressing through the ranks and going on to secure senior positions in the business. Today, the company’s ethos of encouraging staff to develop and grow remains an important part of the business and Thorntons is planning further expansion by recruiting a new apprentice to the firm. Steve Heeley, Partner Accountant said:

“Since 1984 there has been a dramatic transformations in the local economy. When the company was formed, few people considered self-employment as a career option, but as the mines and steelworks closed, many were able to lay the foundations of a wide variety of new businesses. “Some of the businesses we have helped to nurture over the years have gone on to become very successful in their own right, responsible for employing hundreds of people throughout the region and we continue to represent some of the businesses that first starting using the firm when it opened its doors. “We have experienced many highs and a few lows over the past thirty years, and even receiving a few unusual requests

along the way – a particular memorable one being when a client tried to pay our bill with a Doberman! “Thirty years is a significant milestone for any business to achieve and we’re all very much looking forward to seeing what the next thirty will bring!“

The company which is based on High Street in Rotherham Town Centre has gained recognition in two categories for its work with the Rotherham Real and Music Festival, being shortlisted for both Best Event and Best Regional Campaign. An additional shortlisting has been secured for its work with the Sheffield & District Law Society in the best publication category for its work on the society’s official magazine, The Legal. Finally, business owner Matthew Ridsdale has been shortlisted in the category of Outstanding Freelance PR Practitioner. The company was founded by Matthew in September 2011, and enjoyed significant growth, undertaking work on behalf of a wide range of businesses throughout South Yorkshire as well as working with some of Britain’s best known brands including Disney and EE.

The nationwide awards received approximately 1100 entries received nationally from PR teams, consultancies and individuals across the UK of which approximately 350 entries were shortlisted. Matthew Ridsdale, Founder of Cannon PR said: “The past three years have been the most exciting, challenging and rewarding ones of my career to date. There have been many highs and of course some lows. The PRide Awards are judged by experienced fellow practitioners working in the Public Relations Industry and to be shortlisted in the awards is a great achievement for any consultancy, but to be shortlisted in four is without doubt the highlight of my career to date. We were previously shortlisted in 2012, Cannon PR’s first year of trading, and I’m firmly keeping my fingers crossed that Cannon PR can go one stage better when the winners are announced in November.”

£168,000 boost for disability sport in Rotherham Disabled people in Rotherham will have more opportunities to get involved in sport after Rotherham United Community Sports Trust received £168,000 of funding from Sport England’s Inclusive Sport fund. The club is one of 44 projects across England that will benefit from £8.06 million of National Lottery investment from Sport England to open up more opportunities for disabled people to play sport. The project targets adults with mental health issues who have limited access to sport. The specific groups which will be targeted are: • A dults diagnosed with psychosis (chronic depression, bi-polar and schizophrenia)

• A dults who have experienced brain injury, triggering psychotic disorder

improve the long term access to sporting activity after the end of this funding.

• Adults with early dementia diagnosis that is leading to cognitive and mental deterioration.

Jamie Noble, Head of Community at Rotherham United said “This is an unbelievable achievement to get this funding. We are only one of 44 projects in the country and I think one of only a handful doing work around mental health. As a football club, we are committed to supporting all communities in Rotherham and this is an area of work which we have seen a growing need for in the past couple of years.”

The project will build the capacity of community organisations working with these groups by training support staff, carers and service users to deliver sport provisions to ensure sustainability and

He went on to add “We have had some fantastic support from the Rotherham Public Health & Sports Development Team as well as the partner organisation who will be involved in this project. We can’t wait to get going now!” The number of disabled people playing sport regularly is on the rise. In December 2013, Sport England’s Active People Survey - an annual, in-depth measure of the nation’s sporting habits – revealed that a record number of disabled people in England now play sport each week. However, non-disabled people are still twice as likely to play sport as disabled people (39.2 per cent compared to 18.5 per cent) which is why Sport England continues to focus attention and investment to address this imbalance.

YouTube for Business With the advent of Social Media being an integral part of any companies marketing plan, it is very difficult to make this work to its optimum without the use of video. Just to give you some facts and figures: • T here are on average 6000 tweets sent per second of which over 400 per minute contain a link to a video. • E very minute of every day sees on average over 100 hours of video uploaded to You Tube. • On average, around 240 million hours of online video is viewed each and every month. This demonstrates the power of video

and how essential it is for business. Here at the Chamber we launched our YouTube channel, “Chamber TV” earlier this year to good effect. This allows our members and other local business to see what we do as opposed to just reading about it. The feedback we receive regarding our YouTube channel is phenomenal and video is now an essential part of our marketing strategy. There are plenty of companies who use video to demonstrate products and

services, however it can also be used for video testimonials. If you have a happy and loyal customer, get them to share their good experiences they have had with you company to promote this to others.
