Welcome to Chamber Means Business 2016 Today sees the fifth year of ‘Means Business’, which started with separate events in Barnsley and Rotherham back in 2012, came together for two years at Tankersley Manor, a super event last year at Wentworth Woodhouse and this time we move to our new venue here at Oakwell, with what we hope is a different and very well-supported format. Without the hard work of the Chamber staff and the commitment of our Patrons, all our exhibitors and the joint event sponsors Barnsley College, Enterprising Barnsley and Segmentation Group today would not have been possible and I extend my personal thanks to all of them. I hope you all get as much out of the day as you expect. However, the key to successful events like this are the number of visitors that take time out of their busy schedules to come along and see what the Chamber and its key partners can do for them and take the opportunity to catch up with what is happening within the local economy. I would encourage all our visitors today to take the time and have a good look around the exhibition and also use their time here to get to know as many people as you can. With there still great uncertainty following the Brexit decision in June, it is as important as it has ever been to talk to each other, get out there and make as many contacts as you can. This year has seen Doncaster Sheffield Airport become the fastest growing airport in the UK building on 20% growth in passengers last year. This year it is forecasting growth of 40% to 1.3m passengers. Thanks to new investment, the airport is well placed to facilitate business travel. It has seen the arrival of Flybe to the airport, delivering 11 new destinations including major European hubs in Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris and Dublin providing a gateway for the Sheffield City Region to the world. In October, Flybe will add Dusseldorf, with Chambery starting in December offering winter sports getaways. The Dublin service offers onward connectivity to Boston, New York, Chicago and Toronto with U.S.-bound passengers able to clear US immigration and customs services in Dublin. Another development for business travellers is a new codeshare relationship between Flybe and Airberlin, which opens up access through the Berlin and Dusseldorf hubs to 150 worldwide destinations in which New York, Munich, Zurich, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Gothenburg and Vienna are well served from Doncaster Sheffield Airport. Through Wizz Air, the airport also serves 12 destinations in Eastern Europe. At the still new terminal, a premium lounge with fast track access and a meet and greet parking service have all been launched. As well as rising passenger figures and a record year for cargo growth, the Peel Group, owners of Doncaster Sheffield Airport have launched Aero Centre Yorkshire as the new branding for the 1600 acre development site encasing the airport. The site has planning consent for over 2 million square feet of office, warehousing and distribution units. Overall a successful region needs a successful airport and with the investments made by the airport to make it a viable option for business travel, the ask of the region is to use and support its local airport wherever possible.

Policy & External Affairs The Chamber continues to operate two active working groups, the Policy & External Affairs Committee and the Transport Working Group. These two bodies offer members and partners of the Chamber to discuss some of the key issues alive in the business community at any given time. They both feed into the Representative Council which meets to provide the Chamber with strategic direction and continues to mold itself in the ever changing business environment. Business Engagement Events As part of our ongoing engagement and representational activities the Chamber continues to host a range of relevant events designed to involve our members and wider partners in the work we do and lobbying we undertake. The events listed below remain some of the core annual initiatives we aim to ensure are provided to maintain the strong voice our members have in the Chamber’s activities in this regard. • MP’s Breakfast Meeting, Barnsley and Rotherham • Annual Budget Breakfast • Issue based seminars and workshops • International Trade Focused Seminars Strategic Engagement In addition to the representation oriented activity of the Chamber with our working groups and events, the Chamber has seen a marked growth in our activities more broadly in our external affairs. Over the past year we have continued our involvement in the partnership structures in both Barnsley and Rotherham through the local strategic partnerships and town centre forums. We maintain strong working relationships with both Barnsley and Rotherham Council’s business support and economic development teams to ensure that we support the businesses we already have in the region and also encourage others to move here and create jobs and wealth.
Your Chamber Needs You! The Chamber is calling on all Chamber members to get involved with our Representation Council and Working Groups. The Chamber’s Representation Council which is made up of businessmen and women from across the region and meets six times a year to influence the strategic vision and direction of the Chamber. Our four working groups the Policy & External Affairs Committee, Transport Working Group, Construction Plus and Women in Business

New Chamber Website Launched www.brchamber.co.uk Here at the Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce we continue to strive to be at the forefront of our Digital offering. We revamped our Social Media offering, launched our bespoke app and most recently we made the decision to change the format of our Bulletin to an on-line publication. For 2016, we made the decision to start looking at our websites and the value they add to our members and the wider business community. Over the last few months we have been working on a new site and we are pleased to announce this will be launched on Thursday, 15th September. The new website has a fully responsive design, perfectly resizing to fit any device type, meaning visitors to our site can now enjoy the optimal browsing experience navigating pages at ease on any device they choose. This element completely eliminates the need to zoom, rotate or resize the website regardless of whether it is accessed on desktop, tablet or mobile.
The new website has been developed in WordPress, which is one of the most user friendly Content Management Systems on the market, this will allow us to easily maintain and keep the site up to date so we can always provide our members and users with relevant content and the latest business news. With our members in mind we’ve further developed our member’s user section for members to be able to customize their own Business Directory listing along with a new feature which will allow members to submit their news articles directly to us through the login platform. We’ve also added a new feature within our events and training section so that users can download our full calendar, or export a single event/training date direct to their calendars so that you’ll never miss a date again. The design is clear and easy to navigate, not only enhancing the overall usability of the site but also making it an enjoyable experience in the process. Relaunch of training services to support South Yorkshire’s businesses Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber’s training arm has been re-launched to further support businesses across the region with any training requirements they may have. Chamber Skills Solutions (CSS) works with a large network of quality specialist training providers to deliver training that meets requirements across all sectors and occupational areas, from Manufacturing to First Aid, there is a wide variation of courses to cover all businesses. On top of this we also run in-house accredited courses on an array of topics. The relaunch will see a more comprehensive training schedule, with the introduction of Prince 2 training and CSCS Card training and application.
