CHAMBER VIEW

Chamber View President, Lisa Pogson highlights her objectives for her term of office.

“I am so proud to take on the role as President of Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce.“ “When I left school at 16 with a handful of average GCSEs, a love of English, an interest in property and buildings with a willingness to work hard and help people, I was happy to start on a Youth Training Scheme, as an admin ‘dogsbody’. I have worked at every opportunity and have made fabulous friends and had some great support and mentors. “I also volunteer and am a trustee of a literacy charity in Rotherham - Grimm & Co. I would encourage everyone to get involved with things in their local community, it is great to mentor and help others - no matter how short of time you are. “I was told recently that good leaders Inspire, Motivate, Support and Say Thanks! I would really like to thank Paul Jagger MBE, our Past President, who will stay on the Board for my two-year term. He has been supportive of me and continues to mentor me, for which I am very grateful. There are many others but, I would also like to thank the 3 J’s - Julie Kenny, Jill White and Jackie Freeborn - all of them

have been fabulous for me and I wouldn’t be here without their support. We have so much talent in our region.

projects like HS2 and the Trans-Pennine links, but smaller projects like the Tram Train link between Rotherham and Sheffield.

“I have thought long and hard about my theme for these two years over recent months, but a lot has changed in those months and I feel Confidence is what it’s all about!

“Collaborating across the city region is important for our voice to be heard and taken seriously in the lobbying arena. As a Board, we feel that wherever possible, we must work with other local Chambers to take our message forward.

“Confidence in our Economy, confidence in our People and confidence in greater Collaboration. “This year my focus is on core business and helping to build on the work that has been ongoing for several months in the Chamber. “We want to continue a great customer experience and engagement to help businesses with skills to support growth and change. We have a great membership and we need to work with all for mutual benefits, networking and sharing resources wherever possible, making the most of technology and transport. This is not just about large

C H A M B E R

“Finally, we started last year by celebrating International Women’s Day, it was a great success, but we need it to be bigger and reach more people in 2017. So, at Tankersley Manor on 8th March - get booked in for what will be a great event.”

CHAMBER NEWS

Chief Executive reflects and looks forward to 2017 Andrew Denniff reflects on the previous 12 months and looks forward to the forthcoming year. “The challenges for business, and indeed society itself, over the past year have been well documented. Whether it be Brexit and the resultant change in government, the outcome of the US election or the ever-fragile state of the Middle East, with the impact they all have on world and national economies.

Looking ahead this year, Andrew concluded, “There is huge degree of optimism within the organisation, with our first ever lady President, Lisa Pogson. To achieve our ambitions, we must be reflective of our wider membership base and with Lisa and two other female directors now on the Board, this is certainly a step in the right direction.

“Locally the issues remain no less of a problem, with continuing stringent reductions in public services, the new world of regional devolution, the challenges for the Local Enterprise Partnership or the concerns around our infrastructure, be they HS2, Trans-Pennine connectivity or the relatively simpler solution of extending our Super Tram system across the region.

“There will be a number of issues to deal with, non-more so than the direction that leaving the European Union will take us, this alone is likely to have a significant effect on how we all do business, both at home and abroad. “Our Chamber shall continue to provide as much help, support and guidance as it has done for many years and we will engage as widely as possible in support of our members and the business community as whole”.

“From a Chamber perspective, we continue to engage positively with our many partners across the region in both the public and private sectors, with the sole purpose of both representing and promoting our members’ best interests”.

Chamber raises over £900 for local Charities Festive spirts were high as businesses gathered at the Chambers Christmas Dinner on the 1st December, supported by Fortem (Formerly Willmott Dixon Partnerships), Mears Group and Norse Barnsley. We were delighted to welcome 150 guests to Tankersley Manor for a fun evening with entertainment from comedian Archie Kelly, who is best known for his comic portrayal of Kenny “Dalglish” Senior in the awardwinning Peter Kay’s Phoenix Nights. Guest’s dug deep to generously raise over

£900 for Newlife Foundation for Disabled Children and the President’s Charity Fund which will be donated towards this year’s Charity award at the Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards in October. The evening not only celebrated Christmas but the anniversaries of three local

businesses; IT Desk (UK) Ltd who celebrated 10 years, Hickton and Newlife Foundation for Disabled Children who both celebrated 25 years in business, all were presented with a Salute to Business certificate by Immediate Past President , Paul Jagger MBE.

An aligned Chamber movement to be voice for business during time of devolution Presidents of both Sheffield and Barnsley & Rotherham Chambers of Commerce have announced their intention to promote a greater sense of partnership between the two organisations. The move reflects a desire to work as a ‘regional chamber movement’ across South Yorkshire, ensuring powerful representation of the local business community in a time of devolution, and mirroring the Combined Authority and Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership. Currently the Region has a forum for Chambers to connect. However, a more aligned position, which will initially see the two chambers strengthen their ties and co-operation, represents a new stage towards the potential creation of a South

Yorkshire chamber body, reflecting the voice of business for the whole region. Darren Pearce, President of Sheffield Chamber, commented: “The leadership and governance of the region is set to experience significant change over the next few years, with the establishment of the Combined Authority, the potential of a city region Mayor, and devolution of funding to the region.” “The role of the Chambers is to support business in the evolving economic

landscape and our intention is to work ever closer together, positioning the South Yorkshire Chambers as the voice of business for the region.” Lisa Pogson, newly appointed Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber President, added: “There is a commitment by both Chamber boards to work in greater co-operation to find an aligned voice on many key issues and establish areas of joint working to ensure we strengthen our proposition to members.”

EXTERNAL AFFAIRS

Trans-Pennine Tunnel Study Findings: The Next Steps Within the Autumn Statement, the Chancellor confirmed that the government will continue to examine the case for improving connectivity between Sheffield and Manchester to support the development of the Northern Powerhouse. The Trans-Pennine Tunnel Strategic study has already made good progress and has undertaken initial analysis of five better performing options. Details of which can be found here in the stage 3 report: The report has identified that delivering a new strategic link between Manchester and Sheffield city regions, involving a significant length of tunnel, is achievable. Within this report initial analysis demonstrates: • That there could be large economic benefits associated with delivering a new strategic link between Manchester and Sheffield • A new link could attract up to 35,000 vehicles a day and deliver significant benefits, such as improved journey times, a saving of up to 30 minutes and providing some relief to existing routes

• A tunnelled solution would offer increased reliability and resilience for road users, including overcoming the challenges associated with adverse weather conditions However, further analysis is required to fully understand the wider impacts and benefits. Alongside this work, Transport for the North (TfN) is undertaking a separate study into the impact that a tunnel would have on the wider transport network; which will feed into the case for improving Trans-Pennine connectivity.

Launch of Construction networker Last year saw the launch of the first Construction networking event at the Barnsley Civic with over 60 businesses in attendance. The Chambers Construction Forum found a need for a neworking event directed at the Construction sector, providing useful updates and information to the group, alongside the opportunity to build networks and open up opportunities with other organisations. The topics covered previously have been; Building a Better Barnsley, legal updates and payment issues, and the increasing demand for low carbon environmental goods and services. From January the events will run on a bi-monthly schedule with the first taking place on the 11th January at Barnsley College’s new Cube Construction Centre, based at Honeywell. This event is in association with Barnsley College and Dearne Valley College, both of whom will be providing an update on the Government’s Apprenticeship Levy and Reforms. If you would like to attend the FREE construction networker please visit www.brchamber.co.uk/events

Extra lane on M1 smart motorway scheme to give boost to motorists Drivers in South Yorkshire have been benefiting from extra capacity when an extra lane opened on the M1 in December. The hard shoulder has been opened between junction 34 for Meadowhall and Rotherham and junction 35a for the A616 Stocksbridge bypass, as part of a smart motorway to increase capacity. Overhead electronic signs will also help to prevent queuing and keep drivers informed about the journey ahead, and emergency refuge areas provide a safe place in case vehicles break down.

Highways England’s senior project manager Andy Kirk said: “We are investing a record £15 billion on improving our roads, making journeys easier, safer and quicker. “Smart motorways are a safe way to increase capacity on our roads and proven to cut journey times and wasted hours stuck in traffic.

“This is a great milestone in the scheme, with more than 100,000 drivers a day benefiting from four lanes of road ahead of the smart motorway full opening this year.” Roadworks and a speed restriction of 50mph will remain between junction 32 (for the M18) and junction 34 (for the Meadowhall and Rotherham) while work continues. The scheme which is 10.5 miles is expected to be completed this year.

Your phone lines may be on their way out Here are our top five questions when it comes to the next generation of phone lines, SIP It’s official, BT has stated that ISDN lines will be phased out as of 2025. There are many people out there right now trying to take advantage of this change by pressuring our businesses into making changes to their lines. Although many businesses will need to change their lines, it’s only right that before doing so they have access to the right information. Here are the top five questions that we’re regularly asked about the change over from ISDN to SIP… Why is ISDN coming to an end? Although BT owns and maintains most of the infrastructure for telephone lines in the UK, for both PSTN Lines (Public Switch Telephone Network) and ISDN, they want to move away from traditional telephony and migrate to a more modern IP-based solution. When will ISDN lines be no more? The proposed cut-off date that BT has given for ISDN is 2025. Although this may seem a long way away it’s definitely important to be prepared. What is ISDN being replaced with? SIP is the recognised alternative to ISDN lines. This solution allows you to run voice and data simultaneously over your business internet connection. SIP allows numbers to be hosted in a central database that is fully accessible by your

provider via the internet without contacting the network provider; meaning diverts and disaster recovery plans can be actioned within 30 minutes by your communications provider. Another major benefit when looking at SIP is its flexibility; adding extra SIP lines to your business is efficient and cost-effective. For instance, a plumbing and heating provider requires more lines in Autumn and Winter months; SIP channels can be increased and decreased within 24 hours. Should I scrap my ISDN lines and migrate to SIP? Yes you probably should. But first, you need to ensure you have a phone system that’s capable of SIP trunking. Most modern phone systems (last five years or so) should have this capability. Alternatively, Unify systems

M E M B E R S

are available that support both SIP and ISDN, so you could invest now and be ready for the upgrade when it comes in the future. How do I switch from ISDN to SIP? Making the switch from ISDN to SIP can be fairly simple, providing you plan correctly. DuoCall will be happy to help you plan and guide you through the process. It’s important to have access to the right information before making a decision, so if there’s anything at all that you’re unsure of then don’t hesitate to contact us.

Innovative IT system wins national health award The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust’s new in-house clinical IT system has won a national award. The award was presented to the Trust for helping transform the way colleagues across the hospital and community provide patients with the right care at the right time. The Trust’s SEPIA clinical portal achieved the ‘Enhancing Care By Sharing Data and Information’ Award at the Health Service Journal (HSJ) Awards, which for 35 years have recognised and celebrated the finest achievements in the NHS. James Rawlinson, Director of Health Informatics at The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust, attended the ceremony on 23 November 2016 at the Riverside InterContinental 02 Hotel in London alongside colleagues Chris Holt, Richard Slater, Chris Birks, Joanne Mangnall, Helen Green and Andrew Clayton from Rotherham CCG. He said: “It’s a fantastic achievement for all the hard work clinicians and IT teams have put in over the past two years to develop SEPIA. It’s a real honour and we’re incredibly

proud to win. “We developed SEPIA because community matrons told us they often spent a significant amount of time travelling to the hospital, visiting wards and making phone calls to help provide information to colleagues about patients. This new way of working means patients are treated more quickly and efficiently because they can see comprehensive patient information from any mobile device. We have been working with community nurses to develop SEPIA and they now say they couldn’t live without it.” Hospital and community health services merged across Rotherham in 2013, which meant the Trust had an opportunity to develop new software to gather accurate, real-time information about patients. Colleagues can now see patient demographics, including live views of Accident and Emergency attendees, lab results, admissions to hospital and

discharge dates for patients across the community. Health professionals can access the information from desktops, laptops and hand-held devices with information spanning all departments, including A&E, theatres and community settings. Access to the portal is controlled to protect patient confidentiality and to make sure changes cannot be made to patient records. Andrew Clayton, Head of Health Informatics at NHS Rotherham CCG, also commented: “This is great recognition for Rotherham. A tremendous amount of work across health partners has gone into the portal which is helping to improve the quality of care for our patients by sharing information across the different services in our health and care community. We fully support the continued development of this system, it is a crucial part of our future plans to enhance patient care across GP, community and hospital services in Rotherham.”

Partnership is making a difference to lives of local disabled Children A charity partnership supported by Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce is already making an impact on the lives of disabled and terminally ill children in South Yorkshire. – that will soon be a thing of the past.”

Newlife Foundation for Disabled Children became the Chamber’s ‘Charity of the Year’, after being presented with the Charity award at the 2016 Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards, and received a donation of £3,000 from Secure Power Ltd. The prize donation is now helping two children – one in Rotherham and the other in Doncaster – get the specialist equipment they urgently need.

The bed – which costs £3,283 – is now on order. The prize money has contributed towards the purchase of the bed, with the remaining balance of its donation helping to fund a wheelchair for an eight-year-old girl in Rotherham. Newlife guarantees that 100 per cent of any fundraising or donation made in South Yorkshire will be spend on providing equipment for disabled and terminally ill children in the area.

Five-year-old Lucas Rodermond, from New Edlington in Doncaster, has Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Epilepsy and Global Development Delay. Night-times are currently a nightmare for his family because he experiences seizures and, a poor sleeper, he frequently gets up and walks around the house, climbing over stair gates and on furniture. Mum Kim Rodermond explains: “Lucas’s seizures mean he can, and has, hurt himself on the side of his bed. He also gets up about 20 times a night; he has no awareness of danger and that, combined with his seizures and sleepwalking, poses a serious safety risk for him. We have stair gates, but he can climb over these; he likes to be physical so he will also climb on windowsills and wardrobes – but then he falls because his balance is poor. Because of this we have had to put a fabric wardrobe in his bedroom so he can’t climb on it.” Lucas’s paediatrician told Kim about specialist safety beds – fully padded and with sides high enough that children can’t climb out – but she was shocked to discover how much they cost. She said: “Lucas gets a Disability Living Allowance and I thought I could afford to save £10 of this each month to buy the bed he needs. Then I looked up the prices and almost had a heart attack.

Newlife County Fundraiser Caroline Artschan said: “We are delighted that we won the Charity of the Year award and received the prize donation from Secure Power, along with ongoing support from the Chamber. Lucas would be almost 40 before I could save enough!” Fortunately for Kim, her son’s school told her about Newlife Foundation for Disabled Children, which has recently provided a specialist car seat for one of Lucas’s classmates. Newlife is the UK’s largest charity provider of specialist equipment for children with disabilities and terminal illness and has supported 389 under-19s in South Yorkshire, with equipment totalling £358,001 (1,218 children/£1,203,200 in Yorkshire as a whole). Kim said: “I am really pleased with the quick response from Newlife. Getting the new bed will make a huge difference to Lucas’s night-time safety. There have been many times when his arms have been blue from bruises after hitting his arms during a seizure

With statutory services continuing to make stringent cutbacks we are receiving more requests for help than ever before so the £3,000 is very timely.” She added: “I am looking forward to working with the Chamber – which has 1,200 members – in the coming months to show them how their support can transform young lives.”

Award-winning learners are the future Inspirational stories abounded when leading training and skills academy staged its success awards. The event at The Source Skills Academy at Meadowhall, presented by Harry Gration, marked the outstanding achievements of 12 of its learners and employers. Judges had hundreds of deserving candidates to choose from, said Ann Cadman OBE, performing one of her last duties before her retirement as managing director of the award-winning academy she founded 13 years ago. “We have welcomed thousands onto our training programmes over the years and we have seen so many grow in confidence and improve their futures,” commented Ann. “But this year has been an outstanding one. More of our learners than ever before have excelled in their qualifications and businesses who employ them have given ever-greater support. We felt it was time to reward them at an awards event.” Sheffield’s Deputy Lord Mayor Cllr Anne Murphy presented Apprenticeship Awards to Gabrielle Selman for her Outstanding Commitment to Achieve at Excel Parking Group, and Hannah Wibberley for her outstanding impact at, Wrapik Fast Food Bar in Huddersfield. Hannah’s bosses said they would not have been able to grow their family-run firm without her dedication. The Apprenticeship Personal Achievement Award went to Eddie Hoyand, 20, of Ecclesfield, who joined steel plate stockholders Murray Plate Group as a shy

17-year-old admin apprentice, placed by The Source. Now the life and soul of the office, with a permanent role at the company and a Level 3 qualification, Eddie’s example has forged the way for a further 11 apprentices at Murray Plate. Traineeship and Community Awards for determination to succeed were won by former Hinde House pupil Chanel Priestley, who now has a customer service apprenticeship with Meadowhall, and Aaron Taylor, now an accounts clerk apprentice at Atkinson’s on The Moor. Two other winners were Elaine Staniland, who beat anxiety and loss of confidence after the death of her husband with the Source’s Preparing to Work team and now plans to be a support worker and The Determination to Succeed Award went to Roman Amaya, who fled her native Eritrea alone in 2013 after her father was jailed for his Protestant religion.

After a time in refugee camps in the Sudan, she was resettled in the UK and is working as a cleaner around her studies to be a nurse at Sheffield College. Five local businesses won awards recognising the time and support they give to people development through training and education - B Braun Medical, who run a unique programme that allows apprentices to work right across its departments, Meadowhall fashion store USC who have employed 85 apprentices over 12 years of partnership with The Source, Murray Plate Group, Jameson’s Tea Rooms on Abbeydale Road and Knowhow, the Sheffield-based national customer support centre for Dixons Carphone, which has 70 apprentices. The awards day was so successful The Source now plans to make the championing of achievements an annual event.

Unity Logistics’ continue to impress Co-founder Simon Arnold shortlisted for national award within one year of trading. In its first 12 months of trading, Unity Logistics, a Rotherham-based international shipping agency, now finds co-founder and director Simon Arnold shortlisted for a national, industry recognised award. Every year, for over 25 years, BIFA (the British International Freight Association) have hosted an awards ceremony which consists of 10 main categories plus a Young Freight Forwarder (YFF) category, and it is the YFF category that Simon has been

shortlisted for. BIFA’s website states “The competition encourages and rewards high standards and professionalism, representing the ultimate recognition of special achievements in different sectors of the industry”. In response to being shortlisted, Simon said: “To be recognised on a national level means a lot to me, and although this is an individual award, it reflects the hard work

and results that both Emma and I have achieved over such a short period of time. Whilst we would of course love to bring this award home, whatever the outcome we can be very proud of ourselves and we will know that the selected winner will be a very worthy one”. Winners from all categories will be announced at the awards ceremony, which will take place on Thursday 19 January 2017 at the Brewery in Chiswell Street, London.

Give winter illness the cold shoulder As the weather gets colder, the coughs and colds return with a vengeance. And while it’s tempting to curl up on the sofa and give in to comfort food, a healthy diet and exercise will help maintain a strong immune system and fight off the bugs. But as much as we try to avoid winter illnesses, getting sick will often be inevitable and the NHS will be under pressure as demand increases. Health organisations are encouraging people to take charge of their health, saying ‘self-care’ is the best choice to treat very minor illnesses and injuries. Some also suggest patients with minor ailments should seek advice from their local pharmacist, while hospitals say many A&E patients could be treated by pharmacies or GPs instead. Barnsley manufacturer undergoes rebrand to spearhead 2017 A Barnsley-based manufacturer has undergone a major rebrand to align with its ambitious growth and expansion plans for 2017. the rebrand puts us in an incredibly strong position to build-up the Red Dog Linings brand and will see the business reach new heights.”

Red Dog Linings, formally known as Triten, is anticipating the rebrand will lead to increased growth at the company, a diversified product range and will reposition itself as the UK’s largest hardfacing specialist. The company has rebranded as Red Dog Linings after Triten International acquired Triten Corporation’s minority shareholding in Triten International Limited to become a fully independent business. The company, which employs 85, manufactures hardfaced plate to reduce abrasion and impact in bulk materials processing plants. Following the rebrand, the company will focus on three product lines; hard facing plate, industrial refurbishment and roll reclamation. In recent years, the Carlton-based company

has seen its products used in a variety of industries including steel, cement, wasteto-energy, chemical and recycling. It trades its products across the UK and exports to North and South America, parts of Northern Africa and the Middle and Far East. Phil Leonard, managing director of Red Dog Linings, said: “The only thing that is changing is our name and logo, everything else is staying exactly the same. We think that

Red Dog Linings is looking to increase turnover by around 40 per cent in the next couple of years, and the company is planning to invest this anticipated increased revenue in cutting edge technology which will in turn create more jobs. Red Dog roll reclamation is the refurbishment of hardfaced rolls for steel mills, food manufacture and other industries. It also undertakes a wide-range of general engineering projects such as the manufacture and repair of roll bearing housings including heavy duty chocks, roll end furniture, drive shafts and spindles.

Wentworth Woodhouse sale as Government confirms grant With the backing of a £7.6m Government grant, the sale of Wentworth Woodhouse in Rotherham to a preservation trust can finally take place. A deal for the largest privately-owned house in Europe was confirmed in February 2016 with the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust (WWPT) who raised funds and developed a long term strategy for the future of the site. The Trust had until November 30 to find the balance and with seven days to spare, the Chancellor of the Exchequer pulled a rabbit out of the hat in his Autumn Statement by announcing a £7.6m Government grant.

Under the ownership of the WWPT, the restoration and development will provide jobs, stimulate local employment and open “one of England’s most important and grandest historic houses” to the public on a regular basis. The former service wing will host a huge range of events and the stables become home to dynamic small businesses. Within the 18th century house and outbuildings more than a dozen apartments and cottages will be restored as lets for holiday makers.

Lloyds loan for Rotherham university campus Funding is being arranged for a proposed £12m higher education campus in Rotherham town centre. A higher education campus for Rotherham was given priority in the borough’s Growth Plan and partners at the Council and the RNN Group have been working on a bid for funding from the Sheffield city region skills capital fund - a £13m pot for training space, workshop or launch pad facilities. Set to be built on the site where the former Victorian hospital at Doncaster Gate was controversially demolished by Rotherham Council, the centre is planned to open in 2018, and could accommodate 44,000 sq ft of space - enough to eventually house 1,000 students.

World first for Martek as it lands £8.5m drone contract Innovative Rotherham company, Martek Marine, has won a €10m (£8.58m) framework contract with the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) to monitor pollution in Europe’s waters. Based at Manvers, Martek is one of the world leaders in the supply of safety and environmental monitoring systems for the shipping industry. The latest contract will see the Martek Drones division send its 2-metre long drones up to 50km offshore to measure the sulphur and CO2 levels emitted from the exhausts of commercial ships. Paul Luen, CEO and owner of the Martek Group, said: “The drone we are using is unique in the world. To carry out this work so far offshore it has to be able to fly for up to six hours and carry a payload of up to 10kg. It will also have to withstand all weathers, including gale-force winds and heavy rain. It’s effectively a minihelicopter.”

A bid for around £3.5m via the Sheffield city region is progressing and now Heads of Terms have been issued by Lloyds Bank to the RNN Group for a loan of £10.5m.

UKEF - Update Yes, it’s ok to talk about the Autumn Statement a few months on, as the Chancellor announced additional support through UKEF. In fact, it’s good news for exporters: • doubling its total risk appetite to £5 billion, and increasing its capacity for support in individual markets by up to 100%; this will be supported by an improved risk management framework and the use of private insurance markets to reduce Exchequer exposure • increasing the number of pre-approved local currencies in which UKEF can offer support from 10 to 40, enabling more overseas buyers of UK exports to pay in their own currency

So, better equipped UKEF can support exporters so that no viable exports fail for lack of finance or insurance. UKEF’s current maximum portfolio allows £50 billion commitment, but with only approximately £20billion exposed, there is room to get the support you need.
