CHAMBER VIEW
Chamber View Chief Executive, Andrew Denniff brings you up to date with the Chamber and the expectations for the next few months.
As we begin working towards our objectives in the new financial year, I am pleased to report the past 12-months have seen the Chamber establish a sound financial base to develop the business even further. The core business has for the first time seen a us achieve a small surplus on activities and our acquisition of the training business Chamber Skills Solutions, in May of last year, has seen a significant growth in training provision and a subsequent additional income stream for the group. With Rotherham Enterprise Agency also seeing record occupancy levels in our various properties, it is pleasing that all three parts of the Chamber‘s activities are operating in profit. The appointment of Lisa Pogson as our first ever lady president has also added to the sense of optimism and empowerment across the Chamber’s diverse membership. A hugely successful International Women’s Day event on 8th March, incorporating the
ATHENA International Awards, reflected the real progress and positivity that is now evident within our organisation. Recent announcements around McLaren and Boeing arriving at Waverley, excellent news about the Liberty House takeover at Tata Steel and the planned proposals for the Gulliver’s Valley theme park near Rother Valley, have all given us reason to look forward to the next few months. There remain however huge issues for business, particularly as we travel down the road to Brexit and try to piece together the impact more locally of the Devolution Deal and the continuing effect that HS2 has on relationships across the wider region. The
challenge

of
economic
regeneration, particularly in our town centres and the constant demand for increased and enhanced inward investment means that the Chamber will continue to collaborate as widely as possible, not only with our partners and members, but also within the wider family of chambers at both a regional and national level.

Chamber raises £605 for Disabled Childrens Charity The Chamber held their first Charity Quiz in aid of Charity of the Year, Newlife the Charity for Disabled Children. On 31st March the Chamber was joined by over 170 people (34 teams) who participated in our first ever charity quiz. The raffle and jewellery sales raised an astonishing £605 for the charity, who supports families of disabled and terminally ill children across South Yorkshire. The champions of the evening were Tickers ‘N’ Bashers (Hargreaves Industrial Services) with 75 correct answers out of 100, and the team who walked away with the wooden spoon were The Burrowers (Burrows Motor Company). “There are currently 18 children in urgent need of equipment in South Yorkshire. This will enable Newlife, the charity for disabled children to make a real difference.”
Awareness Manager Caroline Artschan said: “We are extremely grateful to Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber and all who donated prizes. It was such a wonderful event. “So good to see hundreds of members, friends and family coming together, having fun and helping to change the lives of local disabled children.
Quiz Master and Deputy Chief Executive of the Chamber, Dominic Beck comments: “The first Chamber Charity Quiz has been a tremendous success, with lots of fun and laughs had. We are already planning for the possibility of the event being held at the same time next year, so look keep a look out. Thank you to all the companies who took part and for the generosity towards raising funds for our Charity of the Year, Newlife.”
Chamber responds to HS2 consultation Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber of Commerce enthusiastically support the original Meadowhall HS2 route. The Chamber accepted the original route without alteration and applauded the concept of a station within the Meadowhall area as being best place to deliver connectivity and economic growth to the central and northern parts of the Sheffield City Region (the extreme southern part of the city region also being well served by the proposed East Midlands station). We were therefore shocked and disappointed at the sudden change in route without any prior notice or consultation and its presentation as being almost a foregone conclusion. Despite our disappointment in the manner of this announcement we have
looked at the proposal in a logical and clinical way taking into account what is best for the City Region as a whole rather than the narrow interests of the Barnsley and Rotherham areas whose businesses we represent. With this in mind we would wish to comment as follows: • We are still strongly supportive of HS2 as a concept providing it serves both the northeast and northwest regions of the UK rather than just stopping in Birmingham. • We recognise that any route is likely to have adverse local effects; however the newly proposed route will create
many adverse local effects both during construction and with the loss of businesses and housing within the Sheffield City Region without delivering any significant benefits to the wider city region due to the lack of a proper mainline station. • We are strongly opposed to the idea of the proposed branch line into Sheffield City Centre (click here for a detailed explanation). The strength of feeling is such that should the current proposal stand we would very reluctantly be forced to withdraw our support for the whole project.

International Womens Day celebrated across the Sheffield City Region The Chamber’s Women in Business Group hosted their annual International Womens Day event, which incorporated the ATHENA international Awards, at Tankersley Manor Hotel. The event, hosted by award-winning journalist Jo Davison, was a complete sell out, with over 160 guests who joined in the celebrations, supported by Sheffield City Region LEP. Keynote speaker, Dame Julia Cleverdon, DVCO, CBE, shared her lifetime experiences and encouraged everyone not to sit in neutral, to lead, work and live by values, be bold and challenge when oppression, injustice and discrimination is taking place, but to act with integrity, humility, compassion and fairness. There were many inspirational speakers who shared their own nuggets of knowledge, from both professional and personal perspective. Julie Kenny, CBE, highly successful female entrepreneur and a Director of Sheffield City Region’s Local Enterprise Partnership, spoke about the economic and societal need and gains from greater gender balanced leadership; the opportunity to bridge cultural differences, to harness potential by championing the talents, wisdom and experience of women through value driven leadership. The President of ATHENA International, Andrea Conner joined the celebration
via video link from Chicago, USA, congratulating ATHENA Award recipients and welcoming them to the 8,000 strong, world-wide leadership network. The ATHENA International Award recipients were; Eve Lodge of Barmy Buntin, who received the Young Professional Leadership award, Naylor Industries PLC took the Organisational Leadership award and the ATHENA Leadership award was presented to Amy Cooper of Onboard Skate Park, who will now join the ATHENA leadership network. Jackie Freeborn, Chair of Women in Business commented: “I am so very pleased and proud to announce that the Sheffield City Region is the first and
only ATHENA International affiliate in the UK. We are thrilled to bring together existing and emerging women leaders to create the ATHENA International Leadership Exchange, providing a range of training, coaching, personal and organisational development opportunities to ensure that our region does not miss out on the talents of exceptional female leaders.”

Chamber’s Spring Budget Breakfast The Chamber’s Annual Budget Breakfast, in partnership with Allotts Accountants, took place in March to discuss the implications of the Budget. Over 80 local businesses attended the event, on Friday 10th March, to digest the main highlights of the Budget Statement, which was released on the 8th March. The presentation was given by Allotts Chartered Accountants, who gave
an overview of the implications to changes to business and personal taxation. It was one of the shortest budget statements for a very long time, and it was recognised by the business community present that the Chancellor could have done more to support small
businesses and particularly provide enhanced incentives around business investment. Look out for the next Budget Statement Seminar due to be held sometime in Autumn 2017!

Plan unveiled for McLaren to open £50m factory in Rotherham A space is being readied on the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in Rotherham for supercar manufacturer McLaren to build a £50m, 75,000 sq. ft. carbon-fibre composites factory. Reshoring UK production, the new Composites Technology Centre will be responsible for the development and manufacturing of advanced carbon fibre chassis for McLaren Automotive supercars. The centre will host more than 200 hitech automotive jobs at the Factory 2050 development; where a new Lightweight Centre will also be built to house the AMRC’s existing Composite Centre, and will generate more than £100m of value added in the economy over the next 10 years. Opportunities for expansion thereafter create an ambition of doubling that to £200 million. McLaren Automotive and the University of Sheffield will also deliver a two-year R&D programme and the University’s AMRC Training Centre will train McLaren apprentices who will work in the new facility, with the first pre-production carbon fibre chassis expected to be delivered to the McLaren Technology Centre in the latter half of 2017 using trial manufacturing processes before going into full production by 2020. Mike Flewitt, Chief Executive Officer of McLaren Automotive commented, “In 1981, McLaren was the first company to
recognise the exceptional properties of carbon fibre, and we have designed the highly-technical material it to be at the heart of every McLaren road and racing car ever since. The now-iconic McLaren F1 was the world’s first road car to be built with a carbon fibre chassis and every car built more recently by McLaren Automotive has the same. Creating a facility where we can manufacture our own carbon fibre chassis structures is therefore a logical next step.

Bryn promotes the apprenticeship route Apprentice Quantity Surveyor Bryn Roberts from NPS Barnsley recently took part in The Great British Apprenticeship Challenge (GBAC). The event is specially created to help young people, parents and employers understand the truth about apprenticeships. The GBAC is a unique approach to discussing and learning about the ‘challenge’ young people are faced with in the UK today when deciding their post school pathway. Bryn was one of six local apprentices invited to the ‘chat-show’ style event, hosted by BBC Look North anchor Harry Gration, to share their
experiences, motivations and the benefits they have seen from taking the ‘earning to learning’ route. Following this, Bryn was also invited to feature on BBC Look North as they went behind the scenes of the life and opportunities of apprentices in Yorkshire, and discussed the apprenticeship levy, skills shortages, the north/south divide and investment in the training and development of young people. Sharing his views on apprenticeships,
Bryn said: “When you do an apprenticeship, you get experience and qualifications, but you also get some money which is important to young people too. “You can go to a job interview with a degree after spending three-five years in a classroom, or you can go having got your degree while working on site. When you do it the apprenticeship way, you know the job you are going into which is what employers are looking for.”

Cruising with Couture Just as the new series ‘Cruising with Jane McDonald’ hits the TV waves on channel 5, most people may have often wondered what it would be like to go on a first class cruise. Travelling from place to place on a stunning floating city filled with opulence and glamour was once only a dream for many, however now more and more people are opting for this type of travel with the introduction of more passenger ships and boutique river cruises than ever before. Singer, TV personality and Queen of the ocean, Jane McDonald who found fame on the reality TV series ‘The Cruise’ says that now 1.7 million people are cruising the oceans in search of that exotic getaway. Jane, a loyal client of Angel Couture, by Kay Heeley, for almost 10 years often chooses designs on and off stage to make her feel fabulous for such a hectic lifestyle. Kay Heeley the owner and designer of the Angel Couture brand, features in the new series of ‘Cruising with Jane McDonald’ when her and Jane filmed scenes together in Vienna last year, so Kay and her label are no strangers to cruise wear. Glamorous Couture, Evening and Day wear are combined with comfort and practicality for an ever-increasing portfolio of cruising clients. Kay is currently working on a collection for Jackie Ashley, a first-time Cruiser. Jackie wanted comfortable and especially non-crease fabrics, in basic neutral colour palettes which can be easily mixed and matched. Huge Euro Drone Contract Win for British Fast Track 100 Company Martek Marine (MARTEK) has fought off global competition to win a prestigious Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) contract with the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA). The services offered in the new contract, will fulfil part of the world’s largest ever civilian maritime drone contract, valued at EUR 67 million. Improving safety, cutting costs, speeding up processes, making access challenges a breeze…just some of the benefits to drones. For these reasons, they are quickly becoming a staple of the maritime industry and as the development of drone technology gathers momentum, we are likely to see them used in more maritime applications than ever before. Martek’s drones will assist with border control activities, search & rescue operations and monitoring of pollution, as well as the detection of illegal fishing and drug and people trafficking. A typical surveillance task involves the deployment of a drone from the deck of a ship to a specified area of interest. The drone then collects requested surveillance information before

sending it, in addition to payload data, to the users. The service provision from Martek not only includes the drones, but also the pilots, long-range antennae, mission control vehicles and ground crew. Video and drone sensor data will be streamed live to a control centre, to allow EU Member States to make prompt decisions on intervention actions. The chosen specification of drones under the EMSA contract are of compact design, making them extremely manoeuvrable in addition to having the ability to start and land vertically from both shore and vessels. Focusing on short range operations, the drones will be equipped with the latest sensors designed for maritime surveillance. To operate effectively in the harsh maritime environment, the technology has been developed to withstand storm force wind and heavy rain, snow and salt spray.
Paul Luen, Martek Group, CEO says: “This contract sets us up for major expansion as THE maritime drone experts. More world firsts will be delivered by us in this exciting technology field during 2017, as we launch further disruptive drone services.” The Martek Group was established in 2000 to service the marine market and now have wholly owned companies in Europe and Singapore, employing over 70 staff worldwide. No stranger to marine innovation, this news follows the company’s success having being awarded a place on the framework contract for maritime emissions monitoring using RPAS by EMSA in November, 2016. Martek’s sister company COPTRZ provided consultancy on both contracts.

SOTpay link with Beauty Salon to prevent fraudulent transactions A Rotherham business is working to eliminate the risk of financial fraud losses. Rotherham based, Pure Aesthetics Clinic, one of the country’s elite beauty salons were concerned about the growing struggle that SME’s face when combating fraudulent transactions and the associated fees via payment platforms, prompting MD, Fiona Chester-Lawson to contact Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce for support, who directed them to the exciting new technology company, SOTpay. The introduction was welcomed by Chester-Lawson who stated: “We approached our local Chamber of Commerce in regards to our payment processing system, as we weren’t happy with the service provided by our previous provider. Fortunately, we were put in touch with SOTpay, who helped us implement their secure payment platform, which negates the risk of fraud, reduces our payment processing costs and supports our compliance with PCI DSS regulations.” Jason Mace, Managing Director of SOTpay said: “After discussing the company’s needs, it was clear that Pure Aesthetics could benefit from implementing SOTpay and our payment gateway, to securely accept a payment
online, by telephone, by text message or by email, which was exactly what the salon needed.”
These alarming figures have sparked panic with retailers, who simply cannot afford to fall victim.
In 2015, financial fraud losses reached £755m which represented a 26% rise in 12 months and the worrying trend continued into the first half as 2016, with more than one million occasions of attempted fraud recorded, meaning an incident happened in the UK every 15 seconds between January and June 2016.
SOTpay, uses patented techniques to allow businesses to securely take payments over the telephone without disclosing sensitive card information to the telephone agent, thus providing a PCI DSS compliant system, whilst minimising processing charges from payment gateways such as Worldpay and Sage pay by switching to their own gateway solution, SOTpay+.
This represents a 53% increase compared to the same period last year.
Major projects key to regeneration of Rotherham town centre The regeneration of Rotherham town centre must be driven by large scale developments and major changes like the proposed £43m leisure hub on Forge Island, according to a council investment boss.
Tim O’Connell, Business Investment Manager at RiDO, said: “The main piece of work is the town centre masterplan. My view would be that there needs to be some major changes. We have done a number of things, and we’ve done some really good things in the past in terms of the smaller scale initiatives around High Street and independent retail, but there needs to be some major change.
“Delivering something on Forge Island with a cinema and hotel, and some appropriate, family-friendly food and beverage and leisure offer, will make a big difference in creating the right environment for people to live and for people to come in to town.” A draft masterplan from consultants at the WYG Group is due in Spring 2017.

Are you worried about someone you love, but can’t always be there for them? From as little as £3.69 per week, the 3rings plug gives you and your family the added peace of mind you’re looking for. 10 family members and friends will get daily comforting messages, letting you know she’s used the kettle during these hours. If however, no activity is detected, you’ll get an alert.
You may be worried about someone who has recently suffered a fall or injury, is recuperating at home after a stay in hospital, or has found themselves living alone. When you can’t always be there, 3rings can help. It’s a small price to pay to know that they’re safe and well each day. The plug isn’t there to replace your daily phone call, but can offer instant peace of mind throughout the day for those times you’re unable to reach your loved one. Imagine, just by your mum or dad making their morning cup of tea, or your uncle or a grandparent watching their favourite TV show, the whole family will know that everything is OK. That’s what the 3rings
plug can do. Simply plug an appliance your loved one uses regularly, like the kettle or the TV, into your 3rings plug. If you want to check that, for example, mum makes her morning cup of tea between 5am and 9am, and uses the kettle again between 3pm and 6pm, simply set this up via your 3rings account. If all is OK, you and up to
The 3rings plug delivers a simple and affordable solution, giving you reassurance whilst respecting your loved one’s privacy and helping them to stay independent in their own home. Case Studies Utilinet recently reviewed the contract for a manufacturing company. The contract was 3 years old with a year to go on one contract and two on the other. We were able to fix both contract prices until 2021, heading off today’s energy price increases. The company will be paying over £1000 per annum less than they were when they came to Utilinet in 2014.
Utilinet reviewed the contract for a local golf club . The contract was 2 years old so the secretary had diligently budgeted 15% per annum for his gas price rise. The final signed Basket contract was contracted through to October 2020. It was not only 27%, cheaper than their current contract, but was in fact cheaper than a contract they signed 5 years ago.

£12m HE campus a key part of Rotherham’s regeneration The new Higher Education Campus is set to play a key part in the regeneration of Rotherham - boosting skills levels and attracting hundreds of students into the town centre. Rotherham College, part of RNN Group, will open the centre to students in Autumn 2018, offering a new programme of degrees and degree apprenticeships. The project involves the construction of a 35,500 sq ft campus on the site of the former Victorian hospital at Doncaster Gate. John Connolly, chief executive of the RNN Group, said: “This project will create
a real skills revolution in the town, helping people to achieve things they never thought possible, without having to move away to university and have a huge debt looming over them.” The group consulted with 200 local employers and has partnerships with large employers as it aims to help build the workforce of the future.
Xeros targets textile sector Xeros, the cleantech company based in Rotherham, has revealed that textiles is the first of its new target markets for its patented polymer beads. Based on the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP), Xeros is a Leeds University spin-out that has so far been deploying its special polymers in the laundry and leather tanning industries where they can massively reduce the amounts of water needed. Xeros said it has started small-scale trials and that all the early indications are that similar reductions can be made in the new area of textiles. Mark Nichols, chief executive of Xeros, said: “It is a sector which is very water and chemical intensive and therefore holds significant potential for our technology.”
£100m Tata Steel - Liberty House deal done International industrials and metals group, Liberty House, has closed a deal with Tata Steel UK to acquire its Speciality Steels business for a total consideration of £100m. The sale agreement covers several South Yorkshire-based assets including the electric arc steelworks and bar mill at Rotherham, the steel purifying facility in Stocksbridge and a mill in Brinsworth. Sanjeev Gupta, executive chairman of the Liberty House Group said: “I am
proud that we are acquiring a world-class business with a very skilled workforce and broad range of high-value products. It is one of only a handful of such operations in the world and I am confident it will flourish within our group.”
