CHAMBER VIEW
Chamber View President, Lisa Pogson brings you up to date with the Chamber and her expectations for the coming months.
My aim as president is to keep Confidence at the heart of everything we do. This has been challenged heavily in recent months; what with the General Election as well as the terrorism and tragedies that have been happening around the country. In fact, I feel that Confidence is even more important now. Positive thinking and looking for opportunities are the things that will keep us going through all this uncertainty. At our recent Rotherham MP’s Forum, we received the message that we may be looking towards a much softer Brexit than we originally envisaged. In any business, we all know that getting initial negotiations correct is important, so how we will leave the EU and on what terms? We were told that the work of the government and parliament in general, will be busy dealing with getting through 1,000 pieces of legislation, just to keep the status quo. We really need to focus on what WE must get on with and not to be scared of asking for what WE need as businesses operating in an ever changing environment. Investing wherever possible in projects
and people is important too. There are some great local opportunities on the horizon. Inward investment such as at the AMRC and at Gulliver’s Valley, will bring work and jobs to the area; the Glassworks project in Barnsley Town Centre and funding via the Principal Towns initiative for the areas further out of town; Rotherham has just launched its own Town Centre Master Plan too and businesses are looking at where they fit into this, which is essential to moving the work forward. We need to keep Collaboration at the heart of what we do and as founding members of Athena UK this is important, we are continuing our footprint events across South Yorkshire in the coming months; thanks to Naylor Industries for the first one! I have already been in post for over six months and have spent time with the Board, Representative Council and numerous members and patrons, these include new additions Swinton Business, the RNN College Group, Magna Science Centre and Electrical Safety UK. We C H A M B E R
have also recently started to issue weekly newsletters and we may start using these as a vehicle for asking for more feedback and information from our members and information on training and events for our members. We hope that all members will take the opportunity to attend Chamber Means Business at the New York Stadium in September, either as an exhibitor or visitor, or both! We have the Business Awards on 13 October, where we hope you will nominate yourselves or others and there will be a new award this year - a Lifetime Achievement Award. We look forward to receiving those nominations. Whatever the forthcoming months bring - let us all focus on whatever opportunities are available.

EXTERNAL AFFAIRS
Qatar blockade causes concern for exporters Companies trading with Qatar are becoming increasingly concerned about the severing of diplomatic ties with Qatar on 4 June by Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt have implemented what is effectively a blockade against Qatar, closing airspace and territorial waters and preventing onward shipment of goods traditionally routed through them. This is of greatest concern to companies which might have goods destined for Qatar now ‘stuck in transit’ in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt, particularly those with Letters of Credit stipulating delivery by specific dates to secure payment. UK exporters are being encouraged to discuss with their shipping agents alternative routes into Qatar but a threat of wider action by Yemen, Libya and the Maldives could further complicate arrangements. The British Chamber of Commerce in Qatar has issued a statement which said: “On 4 June 2017, Saudi Arabia,
United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt cut diplomatic ties with Qatar. This has led to closures affecting road, air and sea routes between these countries and Qatar, as well as travel and residence restrictions affecting Qatari nationals. Restrictions on entry to the UAE have also been placed on certain holders of Qatari Residence Permits. These restrictions don’t apply to British nationals. As of 6 June 2017, the land border between Qatar and Saudi Arabia is closed. All flights between Qatar and Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Bahrain are suspended until further notice. These measures are likely to lead to some disruption for travellers in the region. You should check with your airline before you travel. Direct flights to and from the UK aren’t affected. Travellers should also check with the
FCO Travel Advice for Qatar which is being updated regularly. Trade with Qatar is similarly affected by the closure of ports and road borders to Qatar bound shipments. Companies with goods in transit to Qatar should check with their shipping and handling agents to determine how best to ensure the shipments can reach Qatar. Local shipping agents in Qatar can advise on what new routes are proving most reliable and effective. For companies that have future business in Qatar, the Qatar government has emphasised that its ports and the airport remain open and they are operating business as usual. The British Chamber of Commerce in Qatar judges the embargo to be only temporary in nature but it is not possible to say how long it will continue. Further information will be posted as and when the situation changes.”
Members debate local issues with MPs The Chamber gave member businesses the opportunity to meet and debate with local representatives in Parliament just two weeks after the General Election. The Rotherham MPs Forum took place on Friday, 23rd June with Sir Kevin Barron MP, John Healey MP and Sarah Champion MP on the panel, Chaired by Immediate Past President, Paul Jagger. Over 30 members attended and had the opportunity to direct questions to the Rotherham MPs.
The burning issues of the day included the current economic climate, Brexit, investment and training. Autumn will see the Barnsley MPs Forum meeting which is open to members of the Chamber at no cost.

Maltby Academy: Where Informed Decisions are Key “Success for today Prepared for tomorrow Empowering all Maltby Academy learners to enable them to make informed decisions about their future in the work place is a key objective for the careers education information advice and guidance (CEIAG) program. Since becoming a diamond member of the Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce last year, students from across all year groups have engaged in a curriculum program linked to developing their understanding of employability and the different work sectors in which they might choose to build a meaningful career. Earlier this year, students from Year 13 took part in the Employability Development Day; during which students had a mock interview with one of several local and national employers. Preparation for the interview was robust, students where challenged to identify their individual skills and qualities relevant to a potentially securing a position of employment with an employer in their chosen work sector. Furthermore, strong links with colleagues at both Lincoln University and Sheffield Hallam University enabled students to participate in workshops designed to practice interview techniques. More recently, students in Year 10 and Year 12 are learning how to secure their future through a program of workshops and employer engagement
opportunities. With the support of the Chamber, learners have participated in employer encounters focussed on researching careers in STEM, securing an apprenticeship and developing their own employability skills. Transition of students into the Maltby Learning Trust Post 16 provision is strong, with the majority of key stage four students opting for Post 16 learning. The curriculum offer across Post 16 is varied. As well as a broad range of facilitating A level subjects; students can also choose from a range of vocational level three BTEC courses in Health and Social Care, Sport, Information Communication
Technology and Applied Science. Maltby Academy are very proud of the diverse range of positive progression routes that students choose, decisions which are founded in a curriculum with CEAIG and Lifeskills at the core.

Active Response Initiative for Counter Terrorism Awareness Active Response Security Services and South Yorkshire Police deliver Counter Terrorism awareness sessions for local businesses. The initiative was put in place following organisations in Barnsley Town Centre expressing a need to understand what to expect and how to advise staff to react in the event of an incident. Recent terrorist activity within the UK has resulted in increased anxiety and questions about how well a Town like Barnsley might be prepared in the event of an incident. A well-known retail chain with multiple stores in the Town Centre registered eight of their staff and management to attend the awareness session immediately following a visit from Active Response. Customers of Active Response acknowledged that they saw a great value in providing practical instruction on a subject that has recently raised concerns and demanded some form of plan based on best advice. Active Response approached South Yorkshire Police to be involved in the awareness sessions to give businesses advice from specialist officers. The sessions are based around Project Griffin and Argus, which have been designed bespoke for these half day sessions. The awareness sessions will include:

Experian offers key tips to market your business Whatever your product or service, there are customers out there who will be willing to pay for it. It’s just a case of finding them – and more importantly, helping them to find you. Knowing your customer Whether your business is B2C or B2B, when it comes to finding customers, there is one key step that people often miss. That is to identify WHO your ideal customers are. Missing this can lead to a watered down message and less impactful marketing. It can be tempting to try to reach as large an audience as possible but this isn’t always the best way. So before you go out looking for new customers, think about the type of people or businesses who are most in need of your product or service and who are most likely to be attracted to your brand Marketing your small business If you don’t have much experience in marketing then it can be difficult to know where to start but the good news is that we’re here to break it down for you and help you not waste time on marketing activities that may not get you anywhere. Instead, we’ll give you the options and help you decide which will work best for your specific business. Always keep your ideal customers in
mind when deciding how to proceed. If you are a local business looking locally for customers, then a door to door leaflet drop or advert in a local paper can be the perfect way to find your customers. Taking out an expensive advert in a national newspaper, would likely be much less successful and much more costly to you! Online advertising There are a number of different forms of online advertising available. Probably the most common is Paid Search or pay-per-click (PPC). This allows you to bid on certain key words and terms that would be relevant to your business and in so doing, to rank more highly for those terms in search so that customers are more likely to find your business when looking online. As always, a good understanding of who your ideal customers are, will help you to choose keywords and terms that they are most likely to use to find you. Content marketing Content marketing has grown hugely in popularity over the last ten years. The idea behind it is to use valuable
free content to build a relationship with prospective customers so that when the time comes to sell to them, they already feel that they like and trust you and so are much more likely to buy. There are many different forms of content marketing and usually a combination of them will give the best results. Blogging/vlogging This can be a hugely successful strategy. Research by Hubspot showed that companies who blog receive a whopping 97% more inbound links to their website. Email marketing Building an email list is a fantastic way to find new customers. It allows you to communicate with people on a much more personal level and those communications aren’t floating somewhere on the internet, they’re going directly to people’s inboxes.

A healthy workforce means healthy business What’s your company’s number one asset? Your staff, right? This is complemented by Hospital Treatment Insurance for when hospital treatment is needed. This provides the peace of mind that if non-urgent medical treatment or surgery is ever required, policyholders can bypass potentially lengthy NHS waiting lists by opting to be treated privately at a time and place that is convenient for them.
You probably maintain your premises, equipment and systems regularly, but do you make sure that your workforce is functioning at its best? Their health and wellbeing should be part of your business strategy, so encouraging them to take a proactive approach to looking after themselves should be a priority. Westfield Health is the British Chamber of Commerce’s preferred supplier of employee health cover, and we have worked together to develop the Chamber Primary Health Plan to take care of your employees’ everyday health needs. By providing this cover,
you can help keep your staff at their fit and healthy best allowing them to claim money back, up to set limits for things like sight tests and glasses, dental bills and therapy treatments, and give them access to a range of valuable health and wellbeing services.

New Foundation for Barnsley Following the recent extensive refurbishment of our Barnsley office on Regent St. in the town centre the Wosskow Brown Foundation now has an additional base to offer its support local organisations. Our WB100 programme offers free support to 100 businesses, 100 charities/social enterprises and 100 sports clubs between 2015-19. The support we offer to organisations is valued at £2500 which means we will have pledged some £3/4M of in-kind giving to this programme. Since our 2015 launch we have engaged with just under 100 organisations across the region. Barnsley based organisations we have assisted include Pulse HFW who deliver exercise sessions into over 100
care homes in the region. Now in their fifth year the Directors are delivering further growth by offering a franchise opportunity for those seeking to become business owners. Another local organisation supported by the Foundation is Pinfold Pumas Football Club who have built an impressive 20 teams including junior, adult, girls and disability sides. The Pumas also recently got to the final of the People’s Cup, a national competition. These two organisations give you some
idea of the diversity of the support the Foundation provides. We believe a strong local economy isn’t just about helping businesses – a balanced economy means strengthening charities, social enterprises and sports clubs too. BUSINESS AWARDS
Nine children receive vital equipment through generous donations Newlife the Charity for Disabled Children have received over £5,000 in donations from Chamber organised events. The Charity that supports disabled children was successful at last year’s Business Awards when they received a £3,000 donation, kindly sponsored by Secure Power, and became the Chamber’s Charity of the Year. The judges of the Charity award presented Newlife with the award as they felt the funding could make a big transformation to not only the Charity but to people’s lives. The partnership between both Newlife and the Chamber has made a difference to nine children living within the region. The donation from the business awards contributed towards equipment for two children, five-year-old Lucas Rodermond, from Doncaster, who was in need of a specialist bed – which costs £3,283 – and the remaining balance helped fund a wheelchair for an eightyear-old girl in Rotherham. Further to this, In March this year, over 170 Chamber members and individuals participated in the Chamber’s first ever Charity Quiz Night which, in conjunction with a raffle and jewellery sale, raised £605 for the Charity. Caroline Artschan, Regional Fundraising and Awareness Manager of Newlife, said: “We are extremely grateful for the support from Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber and the kindness of its members over the past 9 months. The
donations from the events have helped purchase equipment for nine children within the region. Along with the money raised through various events, the exposure we have received and contacts I have made through the Chamber and its Women in Business group have been astonishing. “I would like to thank everyone for their generous support and look forward to meeting new and old contacts at future events.” Andrew Denniff, Chief Executive of Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber, said: “Newlife became our chosen Charity of the Year and were announced as the winners at last year’s Business Awards evening at Magna in Rotherham. Since then they have become very engaged
with the Chamber and attended many of our events throughout the year, taking full advantage of their status to not only raise funds but to increase their profile within the local business community. Caroline has really used their position as our preferred partner and I hope has benefitted immensely from the partnership”. Newlife also run their own fund-raising events, the next being the ‘Great North Run’ where they are asking individuals to run on behalf of a disabled child. The run takes place on 10th September in Newcastle, if you would like to get involved please visit www.newlifecharity.co.uk

BUSINESS AWARDS
Steering distribution into a new era Mark Mellish, Managing Director of Universal Components and Business of the Year, provides an update following their win at the Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards, in October 2016. When we started the planning to move to our new headquarters in January 2015, June 2016 seemed an age and a different world away. However, a year on we are settled in and now that the move has been completed on time and on budget we can really start to utilise the incredible opportunities and advantages our new building and location will provide. Apart from a world class facility and impressive company headquarters, S74 as we call it, has meant: • All the team together in one site, with departments, people and ideas thriving. • Opportunities for new business. • Expansion of the company’s sales and operational service. • The facilities for innovative training and development that will ensure excellence and great succession as well as great opportunities for the local community. Alongside the last year, S74 has enabled us to: • Acquire and relocate Scuderia, a specialist distributor of prestige car
parts. Alongside DAF and Volvo we can now add Bentley and Aston Martin. • Launch of a B2C business called getoffroad.com specialising in Land Rover parts. If you ever want to pimp up your Defender then we can help! This is now well established, growing and gaining momentum month-on-month with its own dedicated team and office, well we had some spare! • Be more confident and migrate to South Africa where we have opened a new Facility just outside Capetown, where European commercial vehicles can take advantage of our 30,000 products! • Build for the future with other opportunities for companies to store their products with us (3rd party logistics).
One of the highlights of the last year was winning the Business of the Year award and Excellence in International Trade award, at the Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards in October. It was a fantastic start to our time in Barnsley and Rotherham, and provided a fantastic platform to complete the move and re-establish our place in the market. We live in challenging times with more to come and therefore it is really important to celebrate success in all forms. We couldn’t do what we do without our fantastic team and so to be recognised is the best reward. We continue to look forward to the year ahead and developing our team to meet the customers’ expectations. I imagine it will only seem like two minutes until we are sat at the business awards ceremony in October amongst local businesses and will again be sharing everyone’s success. Exciting times… Mark Mellish, Managing Director

New business support for Rotherham animal charity Thornberry Animal Sanctuary, an established rescue and rehoming centre for abandoned animals, has been given additional funding support from Sheffield’s Wake Smith Solicitors. After hearing about Thornberry’s ongoing work to rescue and rehome more than 400 animals a year, employees at the 200-year-old law firm voted the Rotherham charity as its nominated good cause for the next year. The firm’s charitable board is now working to drive fundraising and organise numerous events throughout the calendar and the first job was to visit the centre, meeting lurcher Lucas who has been at Thornberry for more than two years and is waiting for his new forever home. Annette Rigg, animal carer at Thornberry, which is based in North Anston, said: “Every year we rescue hundreds of abandoned, neglected and unwanted animals, including dogs, cats, rabbits, horses and other farm animals, from across South and West Yorkshire, North East Derbyshire, North Nottinghamshire and beyond, and give them a second chance. “We are dedicated to finding secure,
loving homes for as many animals as possible and providing the best care to those who remain with us, so the Wake Smith funding stream will be a massive help to us. “As an independent charity, it’s thanks to the kindness of our supporters that we are able to do all that we do. We rely entirely on fundraising, donations from members of the public, legacies and business support for our continued survival. “Every bit of support, whether it’s volunteering, donating items, raising money, adopting animals from us or even just spreading the word about us, is very much appreciated and we are looking forward to working with Wake Smith for the coming year. Every penny really makes a difference to us.” Kate Lax, solicitor at Wake Smith and charitable board member, said: “The charity was picked after a voting process involving all staff.
through a variety of events and are looking forward to working with the small team at Thornberry. It relies solely on donations and fundraising to continue. Each month, the vet bills alone can reach up to £9,000.” The Wake Smith charitable board includes Kate Lax, Lorraine Slack, Lisa Wilson, Bridie Mulgrew, Alison Gaddes, Abi Shortte, Bobby Griffin-Pygott, Hayley Naisbett and Holly Dobson. Last year the firm raised £7,840 for Rotherham General Hospital’s Special Baby Care Unit after holding fundraising events ranging from quizzes, raffles, cake sales, sweepstakes, monthly dress down days, social events and lunches, plus a successful office-based tuck shop for hungry employees.

The aim of the awards is to make these industries more enticing to women; to create role models for women considering a career in these sectors, while encouraging companies to employ and train more women in these industries. Consultants who ‘practice what they preach’ Brook Corporate Developments, supported by the British Standards Institute (BSI), have recently gained upgraded certification of their Quality Management Systems. The Barnsley based consultants company upgraded their certification of their Quality Management Systems, transitioning from ISO 9001:2008 to the revised latest QMS standard ISO 9001:2015. This revised standard for Quality Management Systems puts increased emphasis on the strategic elements of business management; in particular looking at business risk and opportunity together with examining business ‘stakeholders’ needs and how they can be satisfied. The standard also looks to businesses establishing strategic tasks and objectives, beyond those which would normally be regarded as ‘quality objectives’. In the case of Brook Corporate

In addition to this, performance statistics for 2016 put LBA in second place nationally for its overall on-time

The Sports Bar is also due to re-open after work in the departure lounge area has progressed. TrustFord Barnsley Technical wins high profile award two consecutive years TrustFord’s 20-year-old apprentice, Jacob Loveday from Rotherham, has won two prestigious awards, two years running. Steve Lindley, Jacob’s Manager at TrustFord Barnsley, said: “We are so proud of Jacob and all that he has achieved. He has exceeded all of our expectations. He is a dedicated and enthusiastic member of our team and we know he will reach great heights within TrustFord and within the industry.”
This year he claimed the Technician of the Year award at the TrustFord awards for excellence ceremony and in 2016 he won Apprentice of the Year. Jacob was put forward by his proud Manager Steve Lindley. Steve has worked with Jacob at TrustFord Barnsley since 2013 when Jacob first became an apprentice, on a Ford training programme run by Skillnet, one of the UK’s largest providers of Apprenticeships to the automotive industry. Jacob was thrilled to have won for a second year running and said he “wasn’t expecting it at all. I just come in and do my job.” Jacob has always been interested in cars and mechanics and as soon as he was able he searched for apprenticeships online and decided to sign up with Skillnet in 2013. He completed his
apprenticeship in 2016 and swiftly became a fully-fledged Technician. Jacob said: “The Skillnet apprenticeship courses are fantastic. They are very organised and I would recommend it to anyone thinking of getting into the automotive industry. My aim now is to work hard, keep going and hopefully one day progress up the ladder.”
Lee Acton, Chief Executive, Skillnet, said: “We are delighted that once again, one of Skillnet’s apprentices has been successful at the annual awards celebration. Our Skillnet courses are designed to expose apprentices to a wide variety of skills and resources and the fact that Jacob has won two years running is testament not only to our outstanding courses but also to Jacob’s hard work and efforts through the years to get where he is today. We are exceptionally proud of him and all those who have worked with him.”
Renovation of Piano Factory Gets Cutting Edge Finish The renovation of an old piano factory in London has been given a cutting-edge look thanks to Yorkshire’s leading laser cutting and engraving company, Cutting Technologies. The factory in Camden has been converted into 15 residential apartments with the whole interior of the building being remodelled and the exterior repaired. Using 3mm mild steel, the staircase design follows that of floating treads cantilevering from the wall with the aim of the balustrades being to create
something eye catching whilst adhering to building regulations. Jane Robinson, director and co-founder of Cutting Technologies added: “It’s always rewarding to see the final results of our work and these balustrades prove why laser cutting has always been great for creating something which is both practical and beautiful.”

INTERNATIONAL TRADE
Trade Deficit Narrowed….. But is it all down to Exports? Unfortunately not….The latest trade data from ONS shows that the total trade deficit narrowed by £1.8 billion in April 2017 compared with March 2017. But this is down mainly to the fall of import values. Unfortunately, exports have remained fairly stagnant. The main contributions to the fall in imports came from mechanical machinery, oil and cars; this follows increases in imports of these commodities in March 2017. Import values for goods traded with non-EU countries fell by 7.7%, compared with EU countries down 1.7%. The good news in respect of exports is that April saw an increase of 2.6%
in export values to non-EU countries, but on the flip side experienced a decrease of 3.8% to EU countries, contributing to a £0.2 billion widening of the EU goods deficit to £8.3 billion.
