THE LORD OF THE JELLYFISH “Aquarist” Frank Zurek looks after the jellyfish at the 14 oz. store in Berlin. The aquarium is an astonishing achievement that fascinates customers and zoologists alike. In an interview we spoke to Frank Zurek about Aurelia aurita, power cuts and holes in bell-shaped hoods.

This also includes 14 oz. Berlin, which Frank Zurek came across by chance. The company that installed the heating at 14 oz. Berlin before it opened in July 2008 set up the contact.

--- As soon as you enter 14 oz., your eyes are immediately drawn to the huge aquarium above the cash desk. The seawater tank with a volume of 6,000 litres exudes a fascination that causes many customers to stand still and dreamily observe the transparent jellyfish as they weightlessly swirl around the deep blue water.

The architects of 14 oz. had clear ideas about the seawater aquarium, which was to be an integral part of the interior design. During the planning phase they had already been in contact with the Zoological Garden in Berlin, which then, however, declined the offer to cooperate or pass on its experience. Frank Zurek rose to the challenge and was motivated to design one of the largest private seawater aquariums in Europe.

The tank was designed and installed by Frank Zurek, in his own words an “aquarist”, who looks after the jellyfish that live here.

“My concern is first and foremost the fish, not the sales,” he explains. In 2005 he turned his hobby into a career and opened his business under the name of “Rent The Aqua Men” in Stahnsdorf near Berlin. Within five years he has managed to build up a steady clientele in a niche business.

Meanwhile it’s the staff from the Berlin Zoo and the Sea Life Centre who come to visit 14 oz. – not to go shopping, but to see the breeding and the young jellyfish with their own eyes. This is a development that is seldom observed in large aquariums. Frank Zurek: “We can be very proud that breeding works here. We have what you could call a small, private jellyfish breeding station, which is unique.” ‹‹‹

DER HERR DER QUALLEN Der „Aquarianer“ Frank Zurek betreut die Ohrenquallen im 14 oz. Store Berlin. Dabei hat er Erstaunliches geleistet – Kunden und Zoologen sind fasziniert. Im Interview spricht Frank Zurek über Aurelia aurita, Stromausfall und Löcher in den Schirmen.

--- Betritt man das 14 oz., fällt einem sofort das riesige Aquarium über dem Kassenbereich ins Auge. Von dem Meerwasserbecken mit 6.000 Liter Volumen geht eine Faszination aus, die viele Kunden dazu veranlasst, träumerisch stehen zu bleiben und die transparenten Quallen beim schwerelosen Treiben im satten Blau zu beobachten.

Konzipiert und eingebaut hat das Becken Frank Zurek, der sich selbst als „Aquarianer“ bezeichnet, und der die hier lebenden Quallen betreut. „Mir geht es in erster Linie um die Tiere und nicht um den Verkauf“, erzählt er. Im Jahr 2005 hat er sein Hobby zum Beruf gemacht und seinen Laden mit dem Namen „Rent The Aqua Men“ in Stahnsdorf bei Berlin eröffnet. Innerhalb von fünf Jahren hat er es geschafft, sich in einer Nischenbranche einen festen Kundenstamm aufzubauen.

Dazu gehört auch das 14 oz. Berlin, zu dem Frank Zurek ganz zufällig stieß. Der Kontakt kam über eine Firma zustande, die vor der Eröffnung des 14 oz. Berlin im Juli 2008 die Heizung installierte.

Die Architekten des 14 oz. hatten klare Vorstellungen von dem geplanten Meerwasseraquarium, das ein fester Bestandteil der Innenarchitektur werden sollte. Im Vorfeld hatten sie bereits Kontakt mit dem Zoologischen Garten in Berlin aufgenommen, dieser jedoch hatte eine Zusammenarbeit und den Austausch von Erfahrungswerten abgelehnt. Frank Zurek’s Kampfgeist war geweckt, und er konzipierte eines der größten privaten Meerwasseraquarien in Europa.

Mittlerweile besuchen auch die Mitarbeiter vom Berliner Zoo oder vom Sea Life Center das 14 oz. – nicht, um einzukaufen, sondern um mit eigenen Augen die Nachzucht und die jungen Quallen zu sehen.

Eine Entwicklung, die in großen Aquarien sehr selten zu beobachten ist. Frank Zurek: „Wir können sehr stolz darauf sein, dass eine Nachzucht hier funktioniert. Wir haben sozusagen eine kleine private Quallenzucht, die einmalig ist.“ ‹‹‹

››› INTERVIEW WITH FRANK ZUREK --- Owner of “Rent The Aqua Men” What’s so special about the jelly fish aquarium here at 14 oz.?

“There’s nothing comparable, as this is the biggest private tank in Europe in terms of volume and number of creatures. Only zoos and zoological aquariums have larger aquariums.”

What sor t of jelly fish swim in the tank here?

“We have around 30 common or moon jellyfish, their Latin name is ‘Aurelia aurita’ and they aren’t poisonous. Coldwater jellyfish, which are most at home in 17 to 18 degrees, are found mainly in the North and Baltic Seas. But our tank is also home to hermit crabs, which eat the leftover feed and algae. We also have coldwater prawns that eat part of the green algae. As prawns reproduce very quickly, they produce plankton. This is a good additional source of food for the jellyfish, which, by the way, are carnivores.”

What else do the jelly fish here eat ?

“They are fed daily, primarily with frozen mini crabs (zooplankton). Phytoplankton, on the other hand, only contains algae, which is no good for the jellyfish. In addition, we use a special feed, which mainly consists of red plankton and is enriched with multivitamins and additives. With this we achieve a very high nutritional value.”

What happens if the water temperature changes?

“The computer control system inside the tank has an SMS module containing pre-programmed ideal values. If the pH-value or temperature levels change, I receive the information by text message and can react quickly. It’s the same for a power cut – which is actually the worst thing that can happen. The tank is permanently cooled, and if the temperature rises above 22 degrees the jellyfish will die. In an emergency I can be here in about half an hour, which is fast enough to be able to fix any damage that could occur.”

What are your routine tasks?

“I come here twice a week to do a routine check, which involves monitoring the technology and the entire tank. I also feed the jellyfish by hand to guarantee a high food density. In comparison to other private aquariums the tank at 14 oz. is very big, so the food density is not as high. I catch every single jellyfish and try to give them the feed directly. Hand feeding works very well.”

Do you have a personal relationship to the jelly fish?

“I actually have a personal relationship to every creature as I want them to have a good life. Once we had a delivery of jellyfish whose bell-shaped hoods were full of holes. With the right care and food we managed to close the holes and they regenerated in our tank.”

There are also a lot of algae in the tank. What does that mean?

“The formation of algae is a very good sign and confirms that there’s plenty of life in the seawater tank. That’s a good thing, as the algae absorb harmful substances. If there weren’t any algae, the entire biology and the whole tank cycle would collapse and become damaged. So if the algae suddenly disappeared from the tank we’d have to start worrying.”

What are the conditions like for the jelly fish in the tank compared to what they would be like in the sea?

“We wanted to create the most ideal conditions possible for the creatures, which is why we have invested in the best technology on the market. The tank has extreme conditions and the best water parameters. The biggest challenge was to get the right current, as jellyfish need to keep floating and mustn’t fall to the bottom, otherwise they’ll be crushed by their own weight.”

What’s the life expec tancy of the jelly fish?

“Jellyfish get smaller as they get older, then they evaporate and disintegrate because they consist of 90% water. In the beginning I had a real problem with the fact that they were only living for six months. But then I did some research on the internet and found out that it’s the same in the wild, and jellyfish simply have a very short life expectancy. That’s just the way of the world.”

››› INTERVIEW MIT FRANK ZUREK --- Inhaber von „Rent The Aqua Men“ Was ist das Besondere am Quallenaquarium hier im 14 oz.? „Es gibt nichts Vergleichbares, denn es handelt sich um das größte private Becken in Europa, was Volumen und Anzahl der Tiere betrifft. Nur Zoos und zoologische Aquarien haben größere Aquarien.“

Was für eine Art Quallen schwimmen hier im Becken? „Wir haben etwa 30 Ohrenquallen, auf Lateinisch heißen sie ,Aurelia aurita’, und sie sind nicht giftig. Als Kaltwasserquallen, die sich bei 17 bis 18 Grad am wohlsten fühlen, kommen sie in freier Wildbahn in der Nord- und Ostsee vor. Im Becken befinden sich aber auch Einsiedlerkrebse, die Reste vom Futter und Algen fressen. Darüber hinaus haben wir Kaltwassergarnelen, die Teile der grünen Algen fressen. Da sich Garnelen sehr schnell reproduzieren, stellen sie dabei Plankton her. Das ist eine schöne Zusatznahrung für die Quallen, die übrigens Fleischfresser sind.“

Was passiert, wenn sich die Wassertemperatur verändert? „Die Computersteuerung im Becken hat ein SMS-Modul, in dem sich vorprogrammierte Idealwerte befinden. Wenn sich die pH- oder Temperaturwerte verändern, bekomme ich die Information per SMS und kann schnell reagieren. Das ist auch so bei Stromausfall – eigentlich das Schlimmste, was passieren kann. Das Becken wird permanent gekühlt, und wenn die Temperatur über 22 Grad steigt, sterben die Quallen. Im Ernstfall kann ich in einer guten halben Stunde hier sein, es gibt dann noch keine Schäden, die wir nicht beheben können.“

Was gehört zu Ihren Routineaufgaben? „Ich komme zwei Mal pro Woche zur Routinekontrolle, dabei überprüfe ich die Technik und die gesamte Anlage. Zudem füttere ich die Tiere per Hand, um eine hohe Futterdichte zu gewährleisten. Das Becken im 14 oz. ist im Vergleich zu anderen privaten Aquarien sehr groß, und die Futterdichte ist somit kleiner. Ich fange jede einzelne Qualle ein und versuche, ihnen das Futter direkt einzubringen. Die Handfütterung funktioniert sehr gut.“

Was fressen die Quallen sonst noch? „Die Quallen werden täglich gefüttert, in erster Linie mit tief gefrorenen Mini-Krebsen (Zooplankton). Dagegen sind im Phytoplankton nur Algen enthalten, damit können die Quallen nichts anfangen.

Darüber hinaus verwenden wir ein Spezialfutter, das vor allem aus rotem Plankton besteht und mit Multivitaminen und Zusatzstoffen angereichert wird. Damit erzielen wir einen sehr hohen Nährwert.“

Haben Sie eine persönliche Beziehung zu den Quallen? „Eigentlich habe ich zu jedem Tier eine persönliche Beziehung, ich möchte, dass es den Tieren gut geht. Einmal hatten wir eine Lieferung mit Quallen, die Löcher in ihren Schirmen hatten. Wir haben es durch richtige Pflege und Futter geschafft, dass sie die Löcher in ihren Schirmen schließen und sich die Quallen in unserem Becken regenerieren.“

Im Becken befinden sich viele Algen, was bedeutet das? „Die Algenbildung ist ein sehr gutes Zeichen und bestätigt, dass in dem Meerwasserbecken viel Leben ist. Sie sollen ruhig wachsen, denn die Algen nehmen Schadstoffe auf. Wenn die Algen weg wären, würde die gesamte Biologie, der ganze Beckenkreislauf, zusammenfallen und zerstört werden. Sollten also schlagartig die Algen aus dem Becken verschwinden, müssten wir uns Sorgen machen.“

Wie sind die Bedingungen für die Quallen im Becken im Vergleich zur freien Wildbahn? „Wir wollten für die Tiere so ideale Bedingungen wie möglich schaffen und haben dafür in die beste Technik auf dem Markt investiert.

Hier im Becken herrschen extreme Bedingungen und beste Wasserwerte. Die größte Herausforderung war die richtige Strömung zu realisieren, denn die Quallen müssen immer in Schwebe gehalten werden und dürfen nicht zu Boden fallen, weil sie sonst durch ihr eigenes Gewicht zerdrückt werden.“

Wie lange begleiten Sie die Quallen? „Die Quallen werden immer kleiner je älter sie werden, dann lösen sie sich auf und zersetzen sich, weil sie zu 90% aus Wasser bestehen. Am Anfang hatte ich ein richtiges Problem damit, dass sie nur sechs Monate alt werden. Ich habe dann im Internet geforscht und festgestellt, dass es auch in der Natur so ist, und die Quallen einfach eine sehr kurze Lebensdauer haben. Das ist der natürliche Lauf der Dinge.“ Vielen Dank für das Gespräch!
