As usual, an enormous number of breeders, riders, horse owners, spectators, journalists and sponsors enjoyed top sport and breeding in Lanaken. To satisfy everyone, the organizers presented a diverse program, including the WBCYH, Studbook Zangersheide’s stallion approval, the Sires of Sires showjumping class, as well as Zangersheide Quality Auctions.

Sales over the past three months have generated more and more money. Cornet Obolensky, alone, is represented by 92 offspring sold for a total turnover exceeding €1.5 million, and his foals are a ‘must’ in sales throughout Europe.
36 – BUNDeScHAMPIONAt 2018
The German young-horse championships, the Bundeschampionat, celebrated their 25th edition in 2018, welcoming around 880 horses and ponies to Warendorf. The Bundeschampionat is also a reflection of what is going on in breeding in Germany. It should be noted, however, that this year there were fewer entries: 69 five-year-olds in the first jumping qualifier (115 in 2011), and 117 six-year-olds (131 in 2011). EG offers the opportunity to review the health and the future of horse breeding in the world of sport. A better occasion, in any case, than that of Olympic Games because the field of observation is wider. For example, in showjumping riders from around 50 (48) nations line up at the start of competition – nearly twice as many as 20 years ago in Rome WEG 1998. Every sporting continent represented. Distant Oceania with two complete teams: Australia and New Zealand. Asia, geographically sprawling, has never aligned so many representatives: Japan, Russia and, for the first time, Israel, plus individual riders from Hong Kong, Taipei – at the eastern end of the continent, but also from the Philippines, Thailand, Korea and, finally, from the Lebanon, Jordan, Bahrain and from Saudi Arabia in the far west. Noting that we regard the Middle East as part of Asia, Qatar and Saudi Arabia were absent teams. In the same spirit, Africa with a new team from Egypt and a rider from South Africa counting alongside Marocco. Certainly, the American continent continues to enlarge. In the north the United States, winning team gold on home turf, and Canada, always aligning competitive teams. But, never before has the south been so represented. Alongside Brazil, we saw teams from Argentina, Chile and Peru, and more geographically central, teams from Venezuela, Colombia and, finally, Mexico. We also noticed individual riders from Ecuador, Uruguay and Peru. Undoubtedly, the relative proximity of the United States and Tryon, NC, partly explains this craze, but not quite all.
Timeo hominem unius libri
We will not include Europe’s situation here, gathering together nearly half the total contingent (11 teams out of 23) with, for the first time, a team from Hungary, albeit with only three riders, plus individuals from Macedonia, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Romania, Norway, Finland.... The purpose here is to underline how much equestrian sport and, in particular, jumping has developed globally over the past 20 years. Because, at the same time, it has been necessary to fulfill passions and produce the tools to go beyond the dream, to reach the goal. We are talking about the sport horse breeding business. It does indeed, explain why the number of studbooks producing sport horses has increased in parallel. The WBFSH counts around 75 members today, whereas they were only 25 at the beginning of the 90s. The majority of breeding societies are European with the exception of those coming from South America, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. If Europe is still the largest supplier of sport horses, an analysis of Tryon’s results shows deep evolutions within a quarter century. Traditional market leaders (Germany, Ireland and France) who previously claimed 80% of world championship-qualified horses in showjumping, fell to 38% (48 horses: Holsteiner (7), Oldenburg (7), OS (7), Westfalian (5), Hanoverian (2), Mecklenburg (1), Rheinland (1), DSF (1), SF (11), ISH (6)), where Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg), through its four studbooks (KWPN, BWP, sBs, Zangersheide) supplied 51 horses – so more than their ancestors, and 41% of the quantity and quality needed for WEG in Tryon. These are early observations that deserve greater study. We will return again to jumping next month, then also analyze, in the same way, the situation in dressage and eventing. RIP Cumano (1993-2018): A statement issued by the Lansink family on September 20 said; "Unfortunately, we had to say goodbye to Cumano today." According to Jos, "Cumano was one of the greatest horses I’ve ever ridden and had some of my most beautiful successes with. First place at the 2006 World Championships in Aachen, second at the European championships in 2007 in Mannheim, first (2004), second (2008) and third (2007) in the Grand Prix of Spruce Meadows... and many more. He was a horse who never gave up and never let me down. After his sporting career, he was enjoying his well deserved retirement in the fields at my stables in Meeuwen. He was in the field day in and day out. Even when he was enjoying his retirement, he always showed that he was still the king. Thank you for everything, buddy. You’re not with us anymore, but you will live forever in our hearts”. Holsteiner Cumano (Cassini I - Chanell II x Landgraf I) was bred by Willy Luhrs in Germany, measuring 1m78, he was quite literally a giant among horses, but in so many ways. He was retired from sport in 2011 during the CHIO Aachen, the site of his greatest victory in 2006. His sire, Cassini, was a successful international jumper with Franke Sloothaak, while his dam descends from Landgraf I. (Photo: Peter Llewellyn) Fortunato de Oxalis (see photo) records the best score during the Swiss national sport foal champioship in Avenches. Nearly 50 foals had to qualify to enter the final through a series of regional shows, and Stefanie Schöllkopf could hardly believe the result. The lovely little stallion Fortunate de Oxalis C (Finest Selection - Rarità-Rubina de Oxalis x Rubin Royal) bred by Schöllkopf and Urs Huber was awarded the highest marks among the dressage foals with 288. The German expert Karl-Heinz Eckerlin was amazed by Fortunate’s expression, and stated that nothing negative could be said. But that wasn’t enough for the breeders. Nera des Oxalis CH (For Romance - Di Nera x De Niro) was only slightly behind Fortunate with 286 points, and became the leading filly. They had never had a winner until now, then had two at the same time. Expert Peter Zeller said that both foals have such an outstanding quality, that they deserved to win. Twenty-six foals with showjumping pedigrees were also presented to an expert jury, which saw Martina and Willi Hartmann from Schinznach-Dorf as the breeders of the winning colt, Aarhof ’s Central Heart CH (Central Park – Cara mia von Aarhof CH x Chameur) with 280 points. They were also awarded third place with Aarhof ’s Balou Mio CH (Balou Star Cara Mia von Aarhof CH x Charmeur). Bearing the same dam’s name, they were of course the result of embryo transfer. The runner-up in this lot was the colt CHG Casido CH (Casalido - Cartina x Cartani) bred by Christine Hürzeler from Zofingen. The best showjumping filly was Carlina du Col CH (Checkter - Cholyne de Vautemaivre x Padarco van Het Hertsveld) bred by Nicole and Reto Kramer-Wälti from Kallnach with 270 points. SM Corlyssa CH (Cornet du Lys - Rivella Site x Kannan) finished second. She was bred by the Stud San Martino in the southern canton of Ticino in Switzerland. S.G. Six new sires in Switzerland out of the nine stallions presented Avenches to be approved as Swiss Sport Horse sires by Zuchtverband CH-Sportpferde – their own breeding association. Four of these horses were born in 2015, one in 2012, plus one 17-year-old who was approved retroactively for his results in sport. The BWP I’m Special de Muze is the sire of the large (1m70) bay, I’m Special H CH (out of Contendra H x Contender) whom Swiss rider Andreas Ott purchased during the foal auction of the Luzerner Warmblutpferdezucht, and presented him at the licensing. I’m Special H CH certainly lived up to his name and showed himself in a perfect manner. The second three-year-old is Porthos ter Sarren (Diamant de Semilly - Ilona van de Fruitkorf x Darco), who showed great loose jumping pressence, as well as under saddle. This stallion was bred in Belgium and is owned by Barbara Schnieper and Martin Hauser from Seewen. Meanwhile, Toulano von Worrenberg (2015: Toulon - Keanu x Chamonix) has a Holsteiner pedigree, bred out of Keanu (out of Danda x Le Grand I) – a granddaughter of Caletto II. Bred by Ferdi Hodel, Toulano is owned by the Von Worrenberg GmbH stud that he owns togeher with his wife, Sandra Hodel. The final three-year-old is the very modern Hanoverian, chestnut stallion Viuda von Worrenberg (Van Vivaldi [KWPN] - Hispaniola [Hann] x Hohenstein [Trak]), from the same stud. This dressage-bred youngster demonstrated lovely paces in an elegant manner. All these stallions are approved temporarily and must show the required efforts when they turn five. The Westfalian stallion Daddy’s Best (Den Haag - Eliza x Estobar NRW) is a superb dark-bay stallion who is a very multi-talented six-yearold, having already recorded results in driving classes up to ‘M’ leve, as well as competing in both showjuming and dressage. He was bred in Germany by Stephan Borgmann, and is owned by Heinz Mägli from Mümliswil. Approved thanks to his sporting results was Upgrade (Heartbreaker - Palett x Pilot), who was bred in Geesteren in the Netherlands by A. Floryn. This brown stallion has proven his capability in showjumping with 27 rankings over 1m40 and 12 over 1m50. After passing the veterinary tests he was licensed for ZVCH, alongside KWPN, Irish Sport Horse, Oldenburg and Hanoverian. He is owned by De Wiemselbach stud in the Netherlands. S.G. PHOTOGRAPHY:
Despite the issues plaguing the venue and the inclement weather, the 2018 World Equestrian Games will undoubtedly go down in history. From being the first Games since its 1990inception to not include jumping’s ‘final four’ rotation component, to having the first woman world champion in WEG history, Tryon 2018 was certainly one to remember.
F
or all the breeding buffs out there, here is a breakdown of the 2018 WEG competitors.
Jumping into the history books The original start list brought forward 124 competitors on day one. The most prolific sire of competitors in this list was the current WBFSH number-one jumping sire ChaccoBlue (Chambertin - Contara x Contender) with an astounding EIGHT offspring: Chaqui Z (Quilina Z x Quinar Z); Chalou (Skylubet x Baloubet du Rouet); Chacco-Blue II (Naiti Rouge x Cincaba Rouge)l Chacco Balou (Balounielle x Baloubet du Rouet); Chacna (;Karewa x Narew xx); Chacco Kid (Solara x Come On); Blue Movie (Showtime x Pilot); and Chactino (Cento’s Contina x Cento). Number two on the WBFSH rankings was also the second-most represented stallion with four direct offspring and four grandchildren: Diamant de Semilly (Le Tot de Semilly Venise des Cresles x Elf III). The third most represented sire was Cornet Obolensky/ex Windows vh Costersveld (Clinton - Rabanna vh Costersveld x Heartbreaker), who currently sits at number four on the WBFSH rankings. He was represented by four direct offspring and is the grandsire of a further three. An honourable mention goes to Darco (Lugano van la Roche - Ocoucha x Codex), current WBFSH 28th ranked sire, with three direct offspring and seven grandchildren. Less contemporary stallions that are still imparting a great influence on the start list through their sons and daughters are headed up by the great Quidam de Revel (Jalisco B - Dirka x Nankin); currently in 11th place on the WBFSH sire rankings, represented at WEG by two direct offspring and a staggering 12 grandchildren. Number 12 in the current stallion rankings Nabab de Reve (Quidam de Revel - Melodie En Fa x Artichaut) brought forward two direct offspring, while being grandsire to seven. WBFSH number eight Baloubet du Rouet (Galoubet A - Mesange du Rouet x Starter) brought one offspring and seven grandchildren. Represented by no direct offspring but seven grandchildren apiece were Jalisco B (Alme - Tanagra x Furioso xx – no longer in WBFSH top 100) and Heartbreaker (Nimmerdor - Bacarole x Silvano – WBFSH number 15). The most represented studbook in the initial startlist
was the BWP with 20 competitors, followed by the KWPN with 19, OS with 13 and Selle Français with 12. Holsteiner and Zangersheide come in equal fifth with seven competitors apiece. In the hotly contested team competition, the USA came away with gold and comprised: Devin Ryan with Eddie Blue (KWPN: VDL Zirocco Blue - Silvana x Marlon); Adrienne Sternlicht with Cristalline (DWP: Cristallo I - Monalisa x Caretello B); Laura Kraut with Zeremonie (Holst: Cero I Toulouse x Quick Star); and McLain Ward with Clinta (OS: Clinton - Last Flight x Lord Pezi). Silver went to Sweden: Henrik von Eckermann with Toveks Mary Lou (Westf: Montendro I - Pina-Colada x Portland L); Malin BaryardJohnsson with H&M Indiana (BWP: Kashmir van Schuttershof - Halifax x Animo’s Hallo); Fredrik Jönsson with Cold Play (OS: Contendro I - Honey Moon x Argentinus); and Peder Fredricson with H&M Christian K (KWPN: Namelus R - Sirnanda x Calvados). Bronze went to Germany: Simone Blum with DSP Alice (DSP: Askari Landblume x Landrebell); Laura Klaphake with Catch Me If You Can (OS: Catoki - Argentin x Acordplus); Maurice Tebbel with Don Diarado (Rhein: Diarado - Lady Lancer x Lord Lancer); and Marcus Ehning with Pret A Tout (SF: Hiram Chambertin - Gare A Elle Deux x Stew Boy). The absolutely outstanding winner of the individual gold was Germany’s Simone Blum with her lovely 11-year-old mare

DSP Alice. This wonderful mare was bred in Germany by Ralf Mews, and is owned by Simone herself. Silver went to Switzerland’s Martin Fuchs with the 12-year-old Westfalian gelding Clooney (Cornet Obolensky - Fraulein vom Moor x Ferragamo), bred in Germany by Bernd Richter. Bronze went to another Swiss representative: Steve Guerdat with the 12-yearold Swedish Warmblood mare Bianca (Balou du Rouet - Coco x Cardento), bred in Sweden by Stall Hickey AB, and is now owned by Guerdat himself and Elias Stud Farm. The remainder of the individual top ten can be found in the showjumping table on page
Interestingly, all the horses placed in the top ten were between 10 and 13 years of age, with five mares, four geldings and one stallion. There were two representatives each for Holsteiners and OS, plus one each for DSP, Westfalia, Swedish Warmblood, KWPN, BWP and SF.
Few dressage breeding surprises As usual, the top 12 in the Special, the only individual contest we got to see at Tryon, was dominated by the Donnerhall, ‘d’ line with five representatives, and once again

De Niro was the most influential Donnerhall son, with two of his own, and one by his son Danone 4 (Weltmeyer). At least he is described as Danone 4 on the start sheet. ‘Hippomundo’ and ‘All Breeds’ list the horse that was 10th at Tryon, Dante Weltino, as being by Danone I, while ‘Horsetelex’ has the stallion by Danone II. Danone stands at Klosterhof Medingen (as did his sire, De Niro), and he is described as the sire of Dante Weltino. Usually a name without a number indicates the first stallion, or in this case, Danone I. The Don Schufro (Donnerhall x Pik Bube) son,
Diamond Hit is out of the Ramino mare, Loretta, prima mare in the Paul Schockemöhle band. Loretta is also the dam of Sandro Hit. At a time when Sandro Hit was wildly popular and Diamond Hit somewhat ignored, Mr Schockemöhle told me that he thought Diamond Hit was the best son of the mare, time would seem to be proving him right. The ‘S’ line of Sandro Hit was represented by 11th placed, Sammy Davis Jr (San Remo x Wenckstern). There are three representatives of the ‘F’ line: Charlotte Dujardin’s bronze medallist in the Special, Mount St John

The ‘B’ line had only one representative, but a fairly special one at that, gold medallist, Bella Rose by Belissimo out of a mare by the Anglo Arab, Cacir. A few years ago, (Dutch) commentators were predicting future dressage dominance by Dutch riders and Dutch-bred horses. It has not come to pass. The Dutch style of riding increasingly looks like a one-way road to oblivion, and few Dutch-bred horses have come to the top. The best placed KWPN representative was Cosmo who can hardly be cited as a win for Dutch dressage breeding since he is solidly jumping-bred, by Van Gogh out of a Frühling mare. Buriel KH was one of the unexpected delights of WEG and he does represent Dutch dressage lines, by the Ferro son, Osmium, out of a Krack C mare. Holland’s most successful rider, Edward Gal, in seventh, was riding the Danish branded Glock’s Zonic NOP. The stallion is by the very Dutch, Rousseau (by Ferro out of a Jazz mare) but out of a mare of German breeding, Romanov x Don Schufro.
breeding of eventers, indeed the popular belief was that you couldn’t breed eventers, they were just a lucky happenstance, and the WBFSH eventing rankings were filled with unknowns out of unknowns. Of course, it was never true, the Irish had made a nice little business out of selling eventers to rich Americans, indeed it was simply an extension of their time-honoured role as a source of hunters all the better to carry the gentry in pursuit of the un-eatable. There were a few pioneers, like Sam Barr and Friedrich Butt, who set out specifically to breed eventers and, in doing so, proved that it was in fact quite easily done, probably easier than breeding top jumpers or dressage horses. Nowadays breeding eventers has become a serious business in a number of countries, with France to the fore, and looking at the final top-15 eventers at the Tryon WEG, six are French bred, three Irish, two KWPN and two from Germany. In the pedigree of Allstar B, the gold medallist at Tryon, we find all the influences that have shaped the modern eventer at work. The 13-year-old gelding is branded KWPN, but his top line is all French, combining the great sire of showjumpers, Almé with the Thoroughbred, Night and Day xx. Allstar’s damsire, Eckstein is by Zion (65% blood, combining Lucky Boy xx and Fra Diavolo xx). The final line on the pedigree combines the Holsteiner, Ladalco (by the Thoroughbred Ladykiller xx) with the blood of another of the Thoroughbred stallions that renovated the Holstein breed, Cottage Son xx – who had already been the sire of several top eventers, including British Olympic horse, Cottage Romance, before he was imported to Germany from Britain. competed with distinction at the inaugural World Equestrian Games 28 years ago in Stockholm 1990: Two kiwis, Sir Mark Todd (62) and Blyth Tait (58), plus Australian Andrew Hoy (59). A trifecta of Antipodeans with a total of 16 WEG appearances between them. Indeed, Tait was the individual gold medalist in 1990 riding the great Messiah. It’s a fourth WEG for Hoy (1990, 2002, 2006, 2018), although he also competed in two previous world championships, 1982 and 1986, and has two team bronze medals from his efforts. Tait has five WEGs to his name (1990, 1994, 1998, 2002, 2018), and no prior world championship appearances. However, he became the most successful unretiree, having not competed for New Zealand on the world stage since the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. Tait returned to his NZ home to train racehorses, although he returned to the international scene with a four-star ride in 2011, with his eye on a team place for London 2012. Obviously, a ‘go big’ or ‘go home’ mentality that took him to Tryon. Sir Mark Todd is one of the most capped New Zealand Olympians, now making his sixth WEG appearance (1990, 1994, 1998, 2010, 2014, 2018). Like Tait, he also retired and tried his hand at racehorse training, but his strong competitive spirit and passion for eventing drew him back to the highest level in 2008 (Beijing OG in Hong Kong). Collectively, it’s been said that any one of these riders – well-known for their brilliant horsemanship – could take a donkey around Badminton, and win! You won’t, however, find the bloodlines of any donkies in the eventing list…. But there are a few interesting bloodlines.
Eventing sires with multiple entries There were only four sires with multiple entries: Heraldik xx (three); plus Contendro I, Diamant de Semilly and Jaguar Mail (each with two). Given that the latter two are great French sires, it was little surprise that Selle Français headed the studbook leaderboard (15), ahead of Irish Sport Horse (14), with Holsteiner and Thoroughbred a long way down (six apiece). It’s also worth recognizing the patrimony of the riders in the French team – all of whom rode Selle Français horses – the only nation competing at WEG to demonstrate loyalty to their home breeders 100%. Interestingly, there are no common ancestors among the five French horses (four team members and one individual rider): Tresor Mail (2007/SF/st Jaguar Mail – Nocturne Mail x Iowa) bred by Bernard Le Courtois, is the one stallion in the group, who has 67 products registered, to date, with Selle Français. Perhaps the most interesting ancestor to note is Tresor Mail’s maternal great-grandfather, the German-bred Holsteiner, Libero H (Landgraf I x Ronald) who rose to fame in the showjumping arena under the saddle of Jos Lansink. Libero H, who died in 2006, was in-bred to Achill, and won an impressive series of Grand Prix classes and World Cup qualifiers, culminating in WC victory at the 1994 Final in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands. Libero H was awarded ‘preferent’ status by KWPN – the highest award a

stallion can achieve. Tresor is 73.63% Thoroughbred via some well-known names: Hand In Glove xx, Laudanum xx and Dark Tiger xx. His career began in young-horse classes under the saddle of French international eventer, Jean Teulere, and has been ridden by Sidney Dufresne since mid 2014. The pair has one recorded victory in a CCI2* event at Le Pin au Haras, France, in 2016, as well as good placings in Nations’ Cups and at three-star events in the past two years. Opium de Verrieres (2002/SF/g Ultra de Rouhet AA – Risiere II x Fragile) is a gelding bred by Dominique Bernard and Cendrine Pouget. His paternal Anglo Arab line shows the legendary Nithard AA as his paternal great grandfather, and his dam’s sire is by the Selle Français Amour du Bois. His sire, Ultra de Rouhet AA (42.26% Arab) has been fairly popular among breeders with 395 registered products. Opium is 68.75% Thoroughbred, and has had a long career exclusively with Livio, starting together in CIC young-horse classes in 2008. Since then, the pair has rarely been outside the top-ten in international eventing competitions up to four-star level Vinci de la Vigne (2009/SF/g Esterel des Bois – Korrigane de Vigne x Duc du Hutrel), is another gelding with some predominant showjumping bloodlines, being a great grandson of the legendary Jalisco B. However, his grandfather, Papillon Rouge, is the most notable name – a star of international showjumping with Xavier Leredde who has close to 1,000 products registered with Selle Français alone. On Vinci’s bottom line is another brilliant showjumping sire, Muguet du Manoir – 675 products, many with international results up to four-star level. Qing du Briot (2004/SF/g Eolien II – Henriette x Etalon Or), bred by Patricia Bardon-Planchat. Also from showjumping ancestors, in particular his paternal grandfather, Sioux de Baugy, sired by Grand Veneur, who have 356 and 472 products, respectively. Co-bred by Patricia Bardon-Planchat, Patrice Planchat, Liliane Bardon and Claude Bardon, Qing is 62.89% Thoroughbred, via his primarily Anglo Arab motherline. Pivoine des Touches (2003/SF/m Nykias - Kanelle des Touches x Elf d’Or) – not the bloodline that appears on the French Equestrian Federation website, which is incorrect – is the only mare in the French group. She qualified for the five- and six-year-old classic cycle – scoring ‘elite’ in the latter under the saddle of Donatien Schauly, with whom she has spent her whole competition career. Pivoine des Touches is a paternal granddaughter of Tanagra (Furioso xx) – who is also the grandmother of the great Quidam de Revel. Consolidating her jumping pedigree, her dam is a daughter of Rosire (Uriel) – a world-class competitor under the saddle of 1990 world showjumping champion Eric Navet (FRA), who also proved himself to be a popular sire with 1,348 registered offspring with SF. Pivoine is 54.69% Thoroughbred. A final fact from eventing at WEG 2018 – France and Great Britain were the only two nations who brought all their riders home inside the top 30. ■
canadian Warmblood 2018 performance test
BY
CWHBA (CHRIS GOUILD) FEI
PHOTOGRAPHY:
After several years hiatus, the Canadian Warmblood Horse Association Stallion Performance Test (SPT) returned to Saddlewood Equestrian Centre near Bethany, Ontario ,from September 3 to 9. This year’s test involved five nominated stallions ranging in age from three to 10 years, and it was an occasion when the Baloubet du Rouet line shone bright in Canada.
T
est champion, Bon Baloubet and reserve champion Beau Balou were both sired by the Baloubet du Rouet grandson, Bon Balou (Balou du Rouet - La Belle x Agentinus). This unusual outcome confirmed the preeminence of the Baloubet du Rouet sire line in the Canadian performance test, marking the third time horses of this lineage have come out on top. Previous champions were Bratt Z (out of Manni x Capitol I) by Baloubet du Rouet, bred by M. van der Bruggen, and Bling by Bratt Z, out of Matterhorn dam, Viola-Rose, bred by Carousel Ridge Ltd. With a General Index of 120 and a dressage index of 125, Bon Baloubet was first in both categories and second in jumping with 112, while Beau Balou, the only three-year-old, showed great potential as a jumper and came out with the highest jumping index of 115. The test which was managed this year by Hakan Wahlman from Finland, saw excellent quality horses well prepared. Five of the five received index results that confirmed their approval as stallions. Senior guest judge JanOve Olssen from Sweden, CWHBA chair Charmaine Bergman, studbook member Jennette Coote and breeder representative Cathy Chalak were suitably impressed by these five Canadian-bred stallions. Indicative of renewed interest in breeding, the final days
Beau Balou, by Bon Balou, out of Iroise de Grandry (retired 1m50 showjumper with the Angot family in France), by Calypso de Moyon)
were well attended and everyone was able to enjoy the good food and hospitality that makes the all inclusive Saddlewood venue so popular. The only thing that could not be controlled was the weather. According to Jennette Coote, “the weather was interesting, hot and muggy at the beginning and cold and windy by the end, which gave us a chance to see the horses perform under difficult conditions.” Overall the stallions performed very well, demonstrating their various strengths. Although most were bred oriented toward the jumper ring, their good gait scores indicated all-round ability. • Bon Baloubet (2013/CWHBA Bon Balou - Highfalutin Miss xx x Present Value xx): Excellent interior scores, good gaits and jumping ability, a pleasure for the test riders. Breeder/owner: Sarah King • Beau Balou (2015/Hann Bon Balou - Iroise de Grandry x Calypso de Moyon), at only three, his jumping talent was very evident. Breeder: Unrecorded. Owner: Look Ahead Sporthorses/Louise Masek. • Daccardi V (2008/KWPN Indoctro - Marjan x Glennridge), although being focused on a dressage career, a very capable jumper and all-round talent. Breeder: Stal Vogelzang. Owner: Hans Nibourg. • Prometheus (2011/Westf Portland L - Vesta x Viva Voltaire), superior disposition with positive jumping characteristics. Breeder: Suzanne Hess. Owner: Brett A Taylor. • His Querido (2012/Oldbg His Highness - Roxelle x Quatro B), dressage-bred with superior quality gaits, especially the walk. Breeder: Angela Wong. Owner: Jackie Vanden Brink. To truly evaluate the stallions requires preparation and a smooth running test. All the necessary elements came together. The guest test riders, Cassandra Jessop and Megan Glynn for dressage, and over fences JF Santerre and Mike Pegg, gave the all-important rideability scores. Hard-working volunteers and staff at Saddlewood filled every logistical need. Most importantly the participation and dedication of the stallion owners, whose enthusiasm and willingness to pitch in when needed created a great sense of camaraderie, of course made the whole test worthwhile. ■ October 2018

Quercus du Maury AA passes on at the age of 26
BY
JEAN LLEWELLYN (GENETIQ’ANGLO PRESS RELEASE/ADRIEN CUGNASSE) PSV
PHOTOGRAPHY:
Nicknamed ‘The Genius’, this Anglo Arab stallion was owned by l’Institut Français du Cheval et de l’Equitation (IFCE – French Institute for Horses and Riding), and had been available as a stallion since 2015 thanks to Génétiqu’Anglo. Quercus du Maury represented the genesis of Anglo Arabian breeding, and was the fruit of Renée-Laure Koch and Louis Delieux.
D
elieux, based in the Gers region of France, was the breeder of Quercus’s sire, Quatar du Plape (1982: Amir IV AA - Flore AA x Djecko AA. A former rider himself, Delieux was one of the promoters of the Anglo Arab revolution in terms of demonstrating their qualities as sires over the fences. Indeed, it was his own very capable performance mare Floberie (Caprice VIII) whom he crossed with the handsome Djecko (Quicko) – a stallion who had shown exceptional aptitute in free jumping. The product of this union was Flore, who gave birth to two marvellous stallions: Quatar du Plape (by the great jumper Emir IV), and Hazard (Abiron), a horse who competed in Nations’ Cup classes and recorded an index of ISO167 (1981). Unfortunately, while Quatar du Plape did not compete, he presented a quite brilliant aptitude in jumping tests, in particular by Claude Joineau. Unjustly neglected at the beginning of his breeding career, Quatar du Plape, later established himself as the best stallion stationed in southwestern France during the 1990s and 2000s, thanks to the quality of his offspring. With her ‘du Maury’ suffix, Renée-Laure Koch has notably been the best breeder of the last three decades in his same region. Her success with breeding pure-bred Arabians for endurance is world renowned, and she has also reshaped Anglo Arab stock descending from Yasmine (Daninos). Meanwhile, Louis Delieux owned Sehaidane (Yasmine's mother) whom he’d bought from Edmond Berthelot. The latter, then an instructor at the equestrian center where the Koch family went to ride, had nowhere to raise horses, so entrusted the care of his mare to his friends, which is how Sehaidane became a broodmare at Haras du Maury. Indeed, she founded an exceptional bloodline that produced, among others: Orme du Maury (Fol Avril AA, sixyear-old classic cycle finalist at CSI); Osier du Maury (Jalienny AA, classic cycle finalist at the age of five, six, and seven, ISO 151); Tenarèze (Jaguar Mail [SF]: ICC 154, and six- and sevenyear-old world champion of young horses in Le Lion d’Angers); Devin du Maury (Quatar de Plape: Polish team in CCE, ICC 138); Sirocco du Gers (Dorsay [SF]: ICC 169, fourand five-year-old classic cycle finalist, seven-year-old world champion in Le Lion d’Angers, and CCI3* winner); Fusain du

Defey (Phosph’Or AA: ISO 162, classic cycle qualifier at the ages of four, five, and six); Illusion d’Amours (Bleu Blanc Rouge II [SF]: six-year-old classic cycle qualifier and CSI); Poemedamour de Buissy (Ryon d’Azex AA: Grand Prix and CSI-W level in the USA); Top Story de Buissy (Clinton [Holst]: 1m30 Grand Prix showjumper); Rock’N Roll Animal (Quatar de Plape: ISO 140); Vestra Libera d'IO (Calvaro [Holst], ISO 149); Vox Dei (Kannan [KWPN], ISO 143); Cadet de Beliard (Jaguar Mail [SF]: ICC 143, five-year-old CCE reserve champion of France); Vinka’s (Tinka’s Boy [KWPN], ICC 149); Aurore du Maury (Samuel AA: ISO 150); Henri de Here (Cabri du Val: ISO 154); Desiree de Here (Joad AA: ISO 156); Kafka Brunemont (Reve d’Elle [SF]: ISO 157); Quinquet d’Ivraie (For Pleasure [Hann]: ISO 151); Turquoise d’Ivraie (Quick Star [SF]: ISO 153); Laurier de Here (Veloce de Favi AA: ISO 152); Bijoux du Maury (Samuel AA: ISO 153); Gentiane du Maury (Emir IV AA: ISO 155); Kim du Maury (Samuel AA: CSI); Saxo des Hayettes (Quartz Adelheid Z [Zangersheide]: ISO 160, 1m60 Grand Prix); Shamdala de Buissy (Laurier de Here AA: ISO 141, 1m40 Grand Prix)....
A controversial purchase Traditionally, the French National Studs bought their Anglo Arab stallions based on model at the age of three. However, acquired thanks to his performances in the classic cycle circuit, Quercus du Maury divided Anglo Arabian fans into two camps: The proponents of modernity who saw in him an exceptionally well-born performance stallion; and the traditionalists who were critical of some of his perceived morphological defects. It became clear, however, that Quercus du Maury was a wise purchase, competing initially, then as a sought-after sire. With an ISO 161, he had a very good career in CSO, regularly being placed in Pro and CSI events both in France and abroad. He had also been a four-year-old finalist having completed 11 clear rounds over 14 courses under the saddle of French international showjumper Bruno Rocuet. At the age of five he was awarded ‘elite’ status having cleared 16 rounds out of 17, then finished 13th at the national agegroup championships in Fontainebleau. One year later he
qualified for the final with 13 clears out of 17 courses. Between the ages of seven and 10, he became a good competitor with Joëlle Caïraschi Dagut, with more than 35 victories to his credit. He won or was placed in The Hague, San Patrignano, San Sebastian, Lyon, Le Mans, Jardy, Vichy, Tours, Royan, Rennes, Palermo, Nantes, Marolles en Brie....
du Thot (ISO 139); Regalo du Boulat (1m40 Grand Prix); Simsala de Souvelaine (1m40 Grand Prix); Oraure de Soult (CSI); Rustine de la Vaysse (1.40 Grand Prix).... Quercus du Maury is also a notable sire of dams, who have established themselves with Alvaro Mongrenier, (1m45 placed); Onyx'Jac (1m45 placed); Panthère de Bacon (1m45 placed; Rohan de Poussot (level Pro 1 CEC)....
A remarkable stallion French National Stud closure Hyper endowed for jumping, light intelligent, respectful, with good impulsion and balance, Quercus du Maury had a lot of blood. He bequeathed genius, respect and blood to his offspring, which is demonstrated as much in showjumping as in eventing. Among his more notable offspring: Sweet Phir (ISO 157, CSIO with the French team); Kantor de Logerie (ISO 157, CSIO young riders’ European championship); Othello de Lusse (CSI5*, World Cup); Looping de Buissy (CCI3*, a star of Cross Indoor); Kaliani (ISO 154); Nebula (1m45 Grand Prix, 90 placings and wins); Maelle de la Tour (1m45 Grand Prix); Lieutenant de Joue (CSI3*); Lolipop d’Allez (ISO 149); Noe Brebaudin (CCI2*); Loin du Coeur (ISO 147); Quoniam de Lean (CCI2*); Rapsody des Gravettes (ISO 143); Quercy Haut Agenais (ICC 142); Legend du Couhours (ISO 141); Onyx Haut Agenais (ISO 141); Oubliee Lamblardie (ISO 140); Union Libre Fly (ICC 139); Romance
With the closure of the French National Studs, Génétiqu'Anglo assumed the management of Quercus du Maury’s breeding career in 2015, and the stallion has had his best breeding in recent years. Since completing his final breeding season in 2017, he has been able to enjoy a peaceful retirement in southwestern France, and his bloodline will continue thanks to the stocks of frozen semen. Endearing and emblematic, Quercus du Maury was hugely popular in the Génétiqu'Anglo stables where he enjoyed pride of place, and his disappearance has left a great void. The whole team of Génétiqu'Anglo thanks everyone who participated in Quercus du Maury’s career, from his breeder, to his successive riders, including all those who bought, raised or valued his production. ■

Like every year, the ZVCH (Breeding Association for Swiss Sport Horses), hosted their championship in Avenches. A variety of showjuming and dressage classes for the young-horse age-groups saw quite a few five- and six-year-olds and older awarded with Swiss Horse Champion 2018 titles. Dressage superpromotion ‘S’

how Girl CH (Show Star - Drogheda x Davignon) knows what it means to be honoured in Avenches. With the high note of 73.23% from both rounds she claimed the title in great style ridden by Melanie Hofmann. Show Girl CH was bred by Robert Weber from Schwarzenburg and is owned by Christina Ernst from Bubikon. Christiane Schroeder, Deitingen and Silvan Flury are the owners of the second placed 10-year-old gelding Dream On S CH, bred by Christina Kressibucher, Landschlacht.
Dressage superpromotion ‘M’ Elena Fernandes from Bäretswil showed the eight-yearold mare GB La Ballerina (Londontime - GB Diamanta x De Niro) for a total over both classes of 75.11%, winning the Swiss Champion’s title for the chestnut mare, bred and owned by Hans and Sandra Grunder-Bauer. The runner-up was Rubyal vom Basi CH (Rubin Royal - Larissa x Lysander) with a total of 70.62%. This 11-year-old gelding was bred by Elisabeth Bräm-Meyer from Dietikon and was ridden by his owner, Silvia Schneider from Schüpfen.
GB Dolcino CH (Don Index - GB Dolce Vita x De Niro) also ridden by Elena Fernandez.
Dressage final for six-year-olds
Another great moment for Hans and Sandra GrunderBauer, and another Swiss champion’s title, this time with GB Dolcino CH (Don Index - GB Dolce Vita x De Niro) ridden by Elena Fernandez. The dark-brown gelding performed very convincing paces for an overall score of 85%. Hanni and Fritz Grunder from Zollbrück bred this great horse. And also, for the second time in this championship, Sandra and Hans Grunder were again delighted when their own-bred GB Kiss Me CH (GB Konvally - GB Millenia x Hohenstein), shown under the saddle of Andrea Ludäscher from Subingen, demonstrated great potential. This horse chestnut gelding is now owned by Urs Ludäscher from Subingen. Dantino CH (Desperado - Feldhit IV x Welt Hit II) was one of three stallions participating in this year’s competition for six-year-old horses. He finished fourth in qualifying, but managed to move into third place with his rider Markus Graf from Dielsdorf. Gaby Koller from Hedingen owns this dark bay stallion, who was bred by Bernhardine and Yaver Kälin from Eight-year-old mare GB La Ballerina (Londontime - GB Diamanta x De Niro) with Trachslau.

better notes in the final ridden by his owner Nicole Keller from Lucerne, which gave him third place. Fourth was GB Zahira de Luxe CH (Zhivago - Villa Fomia x Ferro) from breeder Ursula Schlechten in Sutz. The promising darkbrown mare is owned by Hans and Sandra Grunder Bauen.
Dressage final for four-year-olds Once again, Walter Kunz was the breeder of the most successful horse. Veni Vidi Vici KWG CH (Van Vivaldi - Diva Royal KWG x Samarant) lived up to his name as he ‘came, saw, and conquered’. Even though, in the opening test on Friday, he only reached 7.00/8.00/8.00/8.00, his scores improved considerably in the final class. Rahel Larissa Reusser celebrated a great performance with the gelding, owned by Tallulah Lynn Nater from Meilen. Nothing under an 8.00, giving him a total of 79.83% and Swiss champion’s title for four-year-old horses. Sabine Salm from Lenzburg bred Dolce Divina CH (Danviano - Angels Dust x Alabaster Salm), who was ridden by Corinne Sélébam Alt from Dintikon. Corinne showed quite a few horses for their owners in Avenches, and with Dolce Divina CH finished second with a score of 78.13%.

Dressage final for five-year-olds
Jumping elite superpromotion He bred Loxana CH (Loxy de la Réselle - Rosanna x Roman) himself, and went clear in the winning round of the final: Andreas Ott from Mettmenstetten with his own 12-yearold mare. Also clear in both rounds was Barbara Schnieper from Seewen with the 11-year-old Camara Bella CH (Colman Alestra x Argentinus). Schnieper had only just returned from the Masters’ in Spruce Meadows to finish second with this mare, owned by Robert Wolf from Rothenburg, and will be leaving immediately to join the Swiss national team for the World Equestrian Games in Tryon.
Breeder Walter Kunz from Grosswangen always has great dressage horses in his stables, and this was demonstrated once again in Avenches. The brown mare Donja KWG CH (For Romance - Diva Royal KWG x Samarant) ridden by Melanie Hofmann was a long way clear at the top. For her trot and canter she achieved a score of 8.50 and 9.00, and also a 9.00 for her walk. Similarly, in the more difficult program, she didn’t score one note under 8.00. Owned by Urs Ludäscher from Subingen, there’s no doubt that we’ll be seeing more from this great horse in the future. Fidelio von Worrenberg CH (Fidertanz - Larissa von Worrenberg x Lauries Crusador xx) also scored very good notes in qualification – a forecast that he would finish among the top ranked horses. Sandra and Ferdi Hodel from Volken bred the Fidertanz son, who was ridden by Nina Ehrensperger from Wettingen and is owned by Regula Popp from Walterswil. Two further horses in this same championship achieved good results. Bretton Star JWG CH (Bretton Woods - Rubinette KWG x Abanos), another Show Girl CH (Show Star - Drogheda x Davignon), awarded 73.23% from both horse bred by Walter Kunz, scored rounds, to claim the Dressage superpromotion ‘S’ title with Melanie Hofmann October 2018

Youngsters’ superpromotion
5yo showjumping final
For the first time in this show-jumping youngsters’ superpromotion championship, only seven-year-old horses were competing, while the eight-year-olds entered the ‘elite’ class for their own age-group and older. The brown sire Cerano von Worrenberg CH (Ci Ci Senjor - Novelle x Car-paccio) bred by Ferdy Hodel from Volken and owned by Rudolf Sigg from Wermatswil claimed the Swiss champion’s crown for 2018. The very experienced rider, Evelyne Bussmann from Ersingen, showed the stallion in a perfect way. Ronja VI CH (Conteur - Ranga x Czandor) was the runner-up with ZVCH-papers in this final, which was also open to foreign horses. The dark-brown mare, bred by Rudolf Häberli from Spiegel, is owned by Daniel Schneider from Fenin.
There where 19 in the final class and it was breeder and owner Jörg Küng from Grosswangen who finished the jumpoff as new Swiss champion in this age-group. His mare Marylin II CH (Milor Landais - Carla x Calando II) finished with a time of 43.35. It was a very tight competition as the speedy runner up crossed the line in 43.79 seconds. Fordana du Pre Mo CH (For You de Pegase - Cardena x Calando II), ridden by Ivana Camenzind from Develier, was bred by Jacky and Philippe Studer from Delémont and is owned by Marie-Madeleine Charpilloz, Rossemaison.
Six-year-old showjumping final Niklaus Schurtenberger from Worben had a busy final day, riding seven different horses, but it was with Cassido CH (Cassirado - Laguna x Larome) that he won the exciting jumpoff for six-year-old horses. It was effortless for this pair to jump clear in the quickest time of 49.28 seconds. The brown gelding was bred by René and Josef Helfenstein in Sempach, and this impressive horse is owned by the rider and BN’s own Swiss correspondent, Sonja Grob, from Nebikon. Bred and owned by Hans Zimmermann from Sévaz, Zartos du Chene CH (Sévaz Zambesi - Isba des Baumes x Sir Libero) was only 28/100ths slower under the saddle of Arnaud Martin from Oensingen.
4yo showjumping final There were eight four-year-old horses that qualified for Sunday’s final, following two classes held on Friday and Saturday. Three jumped clear, three finished with four faults apiece, while two had eight-fault rounds. With no jump-off, it meant that three horses shared the 2018 Swiss championship: Carisomo IV CH (Curtis Sitte - Carisma PMS x Carthago E), bred by Paul and Priska Erni-Suhner from Eich, and ridden by Niklaus Schurtenberger who co-owns the horse with Christian Winz from Zielebach. The other two four-year-old Swiss champions are Cassi’O CH (Cascadello - Corona x Carano), ridden by Adrienne Müller from Veltheim, bred and owned by her mother Annette Müller-Merz, and Zinedan Athletic CH (Zinedine - Carrera x Carolus). Zinedan was bred and is owned by his rider, Pascal Bucher from Retschwil. ■

As usual, an enormous number of breeders, riders, horse owners, spectators, journalists and sponsors enjoyed top sport and breeding in Lanaken. To satisfy everyone, the organizers presented a diverse program, including the WBCYH, Studbook Zangersheide’s stallion approval, the Belgian seniors showjumping championship, the Sires of the Sires showjumping class, as well as Zangersheide Quality Auctions. The new world champions ride in a faultless jump-off to win the seven-year-old

he podium of the five-year-old championship was occupied exclusively by Irish riders. In partnership with Richard Howley, Uppercourt Cappucino became the new world champion. He was bred by Paul O’Byrne by crossing Pacino with Uppercourt Posh (OBOS Quality). The 22-year-old rider Darragh Ryan and Sir Shutterflyson CSF Sir George (bred by Shane Connolly) ranked second, followed by Michael Pender riding HHS Vancouver (Indoctro), bred by Marion Hughes. Remarkably, it was Howley’s first participation in the World Breeding Championship for Young Horses: “I came to this world championship with one horse, namely Uppercourt Cappucino. That was my aim in the beginning of the year. The fact that everything went according to plan, gives a great satisfaction.” Mystic van‘t Hoogeinde (Echo van’t Spieveld - Geena van’t Roosakker x Darco) was laurelled as the world champion of the six-year-old showjumpers. Bred by Rony Thys, BWP-bred Mystic is out of a dam who herself jumped internationally at 1m55, and via her maternal line belongs to the outstanding performance family of Usha van’t Roosakker. Jeroen De Winter and Mystic remained faultless in the final jump-off to cross the line in 33.01 seconds. finished in 33,01 seconds. A Colestus daughter bred by Eric Schock claimed the silver medal with Donald Whitaker in her saddle. Out of Caipirinja (Colorit), Chilli posted a faultless Chilli jump-off in 33.95 seconds. Mano Negra van de Bucxtale (Mylord Carthago - Odile de Haar x Concorde) and Brazilian Thiago Ribas da Costa finished third – zero faults in 35.17 seconds. The Feniram stud farm bred Mano Negra. The approved stallion Solid Gold Z (Stakkato Gold Callinda Z x Calvin Z), bred by Gestüt Sprehe and owned by Studfarm Zangersheide, gave Christian Ahlmann a great
championship. Ahlmann said; “It is already special to win here, in front of my own family and friends, but realizing this with our own stallion makes it completely beautiful. Especially when you look at how tough this class was. I would definitely compare it to a two-star CSI.” Another approved stallion, namely Grandorado TN (Eldorado van de Zeshoek - Charmique x Carolus H), bred by M. Rietberg and D.J. Verhoeven, ranked second in partnership with Dutch rider Willem Greve. Gudrun Patteet won bronze riding Sea Coast Crystal de l’Eau, a daughter of Clapton, out of the Capitol I dam, Florence I.
Twenty-three newly approved stallions On September 13 the candidates were presented and evaluated in hand, and had to free jump the following day. On September 15 the program started outdoors, with some candidates and several already approved stallions jumping a standard course, followed by a second indoor free-jumping presentation of stallion candidates. The jury, comprising Heinz Meyer, Eric Levallois and Luc Tilleman, finally approved 23 new sires. Progenitor Casall has one newly approved son, Pacha van het Costersveld, plus one newly approved grandson, called Conrad Quality Z, bred by Koen Terryn, whose sire is Connor (Casall). In partnership with Nicolas Delmotte, Connor performed at international 1m40 to 1m45 level. With regard to Conrad Quality Z’s dam, Terryn said; “La Corofina is a full sister to Corofino. She has already produced three international showjumpers at 1m50 level or higher, namely Panama V, Barbou du Ruet and Zara. La Corofina (Corrado) is now 22 years old, but only looks 15. Babouche is a son of Olympic gold medallist Big Star, out of Hiamant van‘t Roosakker (Diamant de Semilly). Hiamant has produced several successful showjumpers, including Elegant Hero Z (international 1m40 to 1m45 level with Leopold Van Asten), and Kerswin van ‘t Roosakker, the 2015 world champion of five-year-old horses in Lanaken. Formidable 2000 Z, also selling at €52,000, is a son of For Pleasure out of Cephale 2000 (Cassini I). Cephale 2000 is the dam of approved stallions Dominator 2000 Z and Karmann 2000 Z, respectively by Diamant de Semilly and Kannan. On Friday, we noticed €26,636 as the average price for a colt and €25,632 as the average for a filly. On Saturday, September 15, the highest price of €72,000 was paid for another Big Star son out of a Carvallo dam. We are talking about Big Day Z. His dam, Carlina, played a leading role in the international showjumping scene by winning several Grand Prix, Nations’ Cups and World Cup classes. On Saturday, the average price for a colt was €26,679 and for a filly €23,714.

Are Irish breeding fortunes on the rise?
SUSAN FINNERTY PHOTOGRAPHY: SUSAN FINNERTY
BY
Green shoots! Looking back on previous Lanaken’s during WEG season is always a reminder of how Irish-breds once ruled the showjumping world. And then we sold our best mares (what did they produce elsewhere if they were so good? The quest to track down hard details continues!), we were slow to adopt the finely-tuned performance stallions produced on the Continent and Irish breeders got left behind their European neighbours. So the part-reality, part-myth goes.
T
he tide has started to turn though with the likes of MHS Going Global (Quidam Junior - Gowran Lady, x Cavalier Royale, bred by Ita Brennan), Ireland’s great green hope at the 2016 Rio Olympics with Greg Broderick. And climbing up the ladder behind him are the Irish-breds that have been doing well, increasingly well each year at Lanaken. Four Irish Sport Horses have won WBCYH gold medals since 2010. That was when NLS Coole Al Clover (Aladatus Z Laural Lodge, x Clover Hill, bred by Brian Kenny) broke through, followed three years later by Arraghbeg Clover (Captain Clover - Blidsworth Lion Queen, x Bonnie Prince, bred by Agata Leonard), whose breeder was told at the sales her filly foal was worth just €800. The third gold medal champion in quick succession was Killossery Kaiden (Lux Z - Killossery Kruisette, x Cruising. bred by Frank and Laura Glynn) and just last year, it was Columbcille Gipsy (Toulon - Gipsy III, x Grundyman, bred by Eamonn Murphy) who won gold again and was later sold for €700,000 at the PSI Auction in early December. And then there was this year’s unprecedented treble win by the Irish Sport Horse studbook when the top-three places were filled by the once-underdogs of the breeding world. So who bred this year’s medal winning five-year-olds?
Gold: Uppercourt Cappucino Sadly, as is often the case in the long road to breeding champions, the success story sometimes involves a late breeder. This was the bittersweet case recently at the Burghley Horse Trials where the breeders of winner Ringwood Sky Boy (Courage II - Sky Lassie x Sky Boy, bred by Myles Mahon) and second-placed Ballaghmor Class (Courage II - Kilderry Place x Young Convinced xx, bred by Noel Hickey), have since passed away. Uppercourt Cappuccino (Pacino - Uppercourt Posh, x OBOS Quality 004) was bred by the late Galway man Paul O’Byrne, a consultant surgeon who has also stood the KWPN sire Kroongraaf (Burggraaf - Rianne x Amor, bred by G.A. Wensink Ooyman) at his former Uppercourt Stud in Co Kilkenny. (Incidentally, Kilkenny is the Irish county that produced the highest number of Irish Sport Horses – seven –

that competed in Tryon recently at the 2018 World Equestrian Games). One of half-a-dozen recorded foals out of Uppercourt Posh (OBOS Quality – dam and breeder not recorded), the Lanaken champion has some interesting siblings. These include eventing horse Uppercourt Cooley (Warrenstown You Two), the oldest of his dam’s offspring, and he is competing at three-star level with British rider Emily Baldwin. Another half-sibling is Chantilly Bojangles (Kroongraaf) the 2015 small hunter champion at Dublin for then-owners Paul O’Shaughnessy and Lynn Turley. Uppercourt Posh’s only covering by the Belgian warmblood sire Pacino (Diamant de Semilly - Dira Courcelle x Muguet du Manoir, bred by Haras de Reve) produced Cappucino in 2013. That was the same year that Maureen McMahon’s young stallion was lost to both the Irish showjumping team and breeders after a such a promising 2012. Back then, he and Clem McMahon were part of two victorious Irish Nations’ Cup teams at Hickstead and Dublin. Interestingly, Pacino himself jumped at the WBCYH in Lanaken as six-year-old, when he was unplaced in the 2010 sixyear-old final. Foaled in 2001, Uppercourt Posh’s dam is not officially recorded, nor does she appear to have any performance record. Not that it prevented her from breeding a Lanaken gold medallist.
Joe Reynolds, his daughter Judy, her husband Patrick Heavey and Vancouver K
Silver: CSF Sir George Co Galway is now Ireland’s largest producer of sport horse foals in recent years. The Connolly family, near Tuam, produce both quantity and quality with their annual foal crop, recording an average of 20 foals per annum under their CSF (Connolly Stud Farm) banner. Eighteen mares are due to foal in 2019, and amongst them is the dam of the Lanaken silver medallist: CSF Sir George (Sir Shutterfly - Norrira x Cavalier Royale, bred by Shane Connolly). Busy preparing foals for this year’s sales, Shane Connolly couldn’t make it to Lanaken to watch the Sir Shutterfly gelding come within 0.17 seconds of winning gold. Shane is one of those young, progressive breeders; For example, Norrira’s 2018 colt CSF Casco (Carrera VDL) is already registered on the Irish Horse Register system. Unsold at the recent Barnadown foal sale, this colt is back up for sale at the upcoming Goresbridge foal sales. CSF Sir George was sold as a foal at the Cavan Elite Foal sale for €5,700 and was later resold as a three-year-old at the Goresbridge Supreme Sale of Showjumpers for €42,000 to his current owner Molly Tracy, from California. He is by the Silvio sire Sir Shutterfly, a full-brother to Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum’s great Shutterfly. CSF Sir George’s dam Norrira was showjumped for one summer (2004) with D.J. O’Sullivan, recording five SJI points. The Cavalier Royale daughter has since produced 11 foals by a variety of stallions, including two apiece by Kroongraaf and the late Selle Français Harlequin du Carel (Rosire -Alaya du Carel x Starter), plus an interesting three-year-old, CSF Rock DJ, by Rich Fellers’ 2012 World Cup champion Flexible. Her oldest progeny include Sera Que (Harlequin du Carel), competed by Swedish rider Anneka Gustafsson and the American export CSF Royal Cruz (Cruising). Undoubtedly her best-known offspring before her Lanaken silver medallist was CSF Mr Kroon (Kroongraaf). Selected on the Irish Sport Horse team as a six-year-old with Declan Egan in 2015, he returned the following year with Bulgarian rider Rossen Raitchev, when they placed second in the opening seven-year-old qualifier at Lanaken. Now a nineyear-old, he is currently competing at 1m40 level on the Continent with Italy’s Emanuele Camilli.
Bronze: HHS Vancouver Completing the Irish clean sweep in the five-year-old final was another Kilkenny-bred; HHS Vancouver (Indoctro - La Juanita x Don Juan de la Bouverie, bred by Marion Hughes), one of nine recorded offspring of his dam. All of this year’s five-year-old medallists are by continental sires, including VDL Stud’s great servant, Indoctro (Capitol I, bred by Gerd Hansen). The use of European-based performance stallions, through artificial insemination, continues to grow here, and much of that practice was initially led by Marion’s uncle, John Hughes. In fact, the home-bred and owned HHS Vancouver’s dam line traces back to both of his Williamstown Stud’s stallions,
Cavalier Royale (Cor de la Bryere - Ligustra x Liguster, bred by Anke Johannson), and Don Juan de la Bouverie (Nicias - Laura de la Bouverie x Dollar de Livoye.) Registered with the sBs and classified as ‘not approved’, the 1987-foaled Don Juan de la Bouverie had strong competition for mares as he was alongside the popular Cavalier Royale. La Juanita’s dam, La Dona, was competed by Irish Horse Board member Marion, whose father Seamus had introduced ‘the first warmblood to Ireland’ Cavalier Royale and whose broodmare daughters have the best strike rate in producing Irish Sport Horse medallists at Lanaken this year. Cavalier Royale features again in two of this year’s three medallist’s pedigrees and is the sire of this Grade A mare, La Dona that continued her later showjumping career on America’s West Coast. La Juanita, who herself produced nine foals, is the first of her five recorded foals. The three-star event horse HHS Dasset Appeal (Ghareeb) is the first of La Juanita’s performance progeny, and another eventer is MGH Annaghmore (Heritage Fortunus), competed by Tryon hero Padraig McCarthy. Another of her offspring is the Army Equitation School recruit Templetuohy, runner-up in last year’s Millstreet Derby with Captain Geoff Curran and a full-sister to MGH Annaghmore. This is the second Lanaken medallist bred by Marion Hughes herself, following Z Seven Caretina’s silver medal two years ago. Her late mother Anne bred the bronze medallist Z Seven Canya Dance (Canya Makan - HHS Chantilly Lace x Cavalier Royale) in 2016 while her aunt Ita Brennan bred another bronze medal winner in Ballypatrick Mystique (Heritage Fortunus - Lady Ligustra x Cavalier Royale) two years previously. Again – Cavalier Royale – Brennan/Hughes family – Kilkenny. There was so nearly a fourth medal, too, when Cuffesgrange Cavadora (Z Wellie 72 - Cuffesgrange Caviladam) finished fourth with Ger O’Neill in the six-year-old final. She has an intriguing damline story as not many Lanaken finalists have a dam that jumped in the European pony showjumping championships. That was the diminutive Cuffesgrange Caviladam (Luidam - Cuffesgrange Millenium x Cavalier Royale, bred by Eamon Sheehan). Spotted in her field by newly-appointed Horse Sport Ireland board member Clare Hughes, she was bought from Eamon Sheehan of Cuffesgrange Sport Horses in November 2014 and went on to earn a place on the Irish gold medal team at the European pony championships last year with Clare’s son, Seamus Hughes-Kennedy. Late registration paperwork glitches now see Eamon listed as the breeder of Cuffegrange Cavadora, also sold to Clare, as a three-year-old. The paperwork can sometimes be slow, there are still some chinks in the pedigrees and performance details, but just maybe those green shoots are starting to grow back? ■ October 2018

Local initiative turns into Polish sport horse promo
BY AGATA
GROSICKA PHOTOGRAPHY: MAGDA KAPICA
For almost a decade, the Udorz Stud Farm – a well-known riding and breeding centre located in the south of Poland – has been holding the annual breeding championships for Warmblood horses in four age categories: foals, yearlings, two-, and three-year-olds. Entries in the youngest age-groups are presented on a triangle, while the eldest are judged in free jumping.
O
nce hosted at a local level, this event has now grown into one of the most important events on the Polish Sport Horse breeding calendar, thanks to the engagement of organizers to promote the initiative, and its fortunate location adjoining three large Polish voivodeships*: Silesia, Lesser Poland and Swietokrzyskie. This year the event held on September 9 saw 50 horses competing in all categories. Maciej Wyszomirski, the director of the Silesian-Opole Branch of the Polish Association of Horse Breeders was very satisfied with this year’s edition: “We started almost two decades ago and held our championships in different locations around the county of Silesia. We were very lucky and eventually got affiliated with the Udorz Horse Stud about eight years ago, and since then we have organized our championships in Udorz. It is a great equestrian centre with sporting traditions and willing to promote Polish-bred sport horses. The two last editions were very successful, not only in terms of the number of horses in competition. We managed to achieve the quality of horses we’d always dreamt of. Udorz has become the place for all breeders from southern Poland who come every year to celebrate. Currently in Poland we are having three major breeding events: Ours which covers Southern Poland, one organized by Kuyavian – the Pomeranian branch of the Polish Association of Horse Breeders in North-West Poland, and one in the Mazurian district. They are becoming professional and spectacular
The colt Silvano G (Chepettano [Holst] - Simon SP x Catanis [Holst]) – 2yo winner 28 October 2018
Oldenburg filly Cheyenne (Millenium T [Trak] - Cherokee [Oldbg] x Fürst Romancier) – yearling winner, with her breeder, Monika Kolakowska shows. Our common goal is to use the potential of these shows to promote the breed of Polish Sport Horse.”
What exactly is a Polish Sport Horse? “That’s what we would like to establish – one common breed for all sport horses bred in Poland. Interestingly, if you look at the starting lists at any competition in Poland or abroad and come across a horse with a Polish passport, what identifies him is this abbreviation – PZHK. It is not a breed, it is the abbreviation of the Polish Association of Horse Breeders. We would like to replace it with one common name for our horses. “Among 50 contestants who came to Udorz this year we had horses representing traditional Polish breeds: Lesser Poland, Greater Poland and SP – which stands for Polish half-bred horse. They all will contribute to the branding of a Polish Sport Horse. “And of course we had foals born in Poland, yet out of German sires keeping their Oldenburg passports. It all proves the diversity of the horses currently being bred in Poland and has significantly improved their quality.” Speaking about the quality, there were many horses who caught the eye of the audience and the judges thanks to their looks and moves. The winner of the foal category – a beautiful grey four-
month-old filly called Chocolate White ‘G’ is living proof of the potential of the Polish Sport Horse. Bred and owned by Pawel Gaszka from Rybnik, Silesia and registered in the SP studbook, she has a very interesting pedigree: A combination of a few exquisite breeds and bloodlines: sired by Hickstead White (Hickstead [KWPN], out of Cariana [Oldbg] x Calico S [Holst]. The yearling category was the most popular with 18 contestants, yet the winner – a very elegant, dark bay Oldenburg filly Cheyenne (Millenium T [Trak] - Cherokee [Oldbg] x Fürst Romancier) made it clear from the outset – she was the first to present – that she did not come here only for fun. Her gaits, especially in trot which got a note of 9.50 points from judges – who nicknamed her Candy Girl – clearly demonstrated that we are talking about a horse with great dressage potential. Her owner and breeder, Monika Kolakowska, was very happy with Cheyenne’s performance, saying, “She has inherited all the exquisite sport genes of her ancestors, with great dressage gaits and type. She is also gentle and friendly around people
which will in future increase her chances of becoming a successful sport horse. I chose a Trakehner, Millienium, for my mare because of their matching exteriors and breeding achievements: One of his ancestors was Gribaldi – the sire of Totilas. It surely paid off. The two-year-old winner – a grey colt, Silvano G (Chepettano [Holst] Simon SP x Catanis [Holst]) – represents a totally different type and prospect. This very strong and powerful horse registered with SP , bred by Karol Gmyrek and owned by Sławomir Misko looks like a horse that can jump really high, so maybe next year we will see him entering the free jumping competition for three-yearolds. The diversity of horses presented in Udorz certainly seems to be the best invitation to return next year to have a look at next generation of Polish Sport Horse. ■

Sales over the past three months have generated more and more money, but not all organizers have been prepared to forward all their results, so our tables are not exhaustive. for €72,000. The damline of Usha is being seen everywhere in sales and displays big prices. Many stud farms are now using this motherline, which has a very strong commercial coastline. During the only sale of the Z Quality Auction in Lanaken in September, no fewer than six foals out of a daughter or granddaughter of Usha van't Roosakker were present, and their average selling price was almost €36,000, some €10,000 above the average price which is closer to €26,000. This bloodline has entered a virtuous circle, producing a lot of bankable descendants. And with sales wanting to attract this pedigree into their catalogues to boost their averave prices, both the colts and the fillies of this damline are creating an auction boom! Noteworthy are: Notre Dame van’t Roosakker (Diamond Semilly - Babe van’t Roosakker x Kannan), a filly, sold for €53,000 on August 31 in Drachten, Netherlands, at the Starsale Auction, while her full brother, Nottingham, sold in the same auction for €35,000. Incidentally, this latter sale definitely seems to offer the most action for sellers, with an average price for foals that continues to increase each year, settling at almost €26,000 in 2018. Among the maternal lines that also show an excellent sales edge, we can mention that of Ta Belle van Sombeke via the offspring of Quasibelle du Seigneur (uterine sister of London), and the line of Valentina van’t Heike, notably via his sisters and their offsprings, for example, the foal Chico Bay Z (Chacco-Blue - Flo Z x Flipper d’Elle) who sold in Lanaken for €59,000. New Zealand Warmblood Association mare upgrades
BY
SALLY REID
Several competition mares have recently been upgraded to Principal status in the NZ Warmblood Association Studbook; four of these were bred in New Zealand, one in the Netherlands and one in Australia. Many are out of quality Thoroughbred broodmares.
S
outhwind Roulette (Ramirez - Kev’s Girl xx x Sir Bart xx) is owned by her breeder Janelle Sangster-Ward of SWE Equestrian, who describes her as a ‘horse of a lifetime’. This beautiful, elegant mare went from Level 1 to PSG dressage in just three years, and also had wins in young-horse-show jumping classes. Injury put an end to her competition career,
but she now has some very promising progeny, including the colt SWE NeuerStern (Negro), and SWE Santorini (Solitär Hit), a gelding who has been sold to an eventing rider in Australia. Roulette’s sire, the magnificent Holsteiner Ramirez (Ramiro Z), was imported from the Netherlands and became one of the most successful stallions to stand in New Zealand. He was the foundation stallion of Astek Stud, and died in 2015. Waldfee (Worldwide PB - Cordura Ryegrass xx x Depot xx) is owned by her breeder, Michele Nelley of Kismaayu Horses. Waldfee’s sire, the truly wonderful Worldwide PB, was bred in Germany and imported to New Zealand in 1996. He stood at Bernie Maubach’s Vollrath Stud and competed successfully here to PSG level, siring many excellent offspring, a number of which were retained by Vollrath as breeding mares. In order to give him access to a greater pool of mares, Worldwide was sold in 2006 to Claire Seidl-Wickins in Australia, where he continued his competition and stud career. He received his full licence with the Hanover Verband in 2009 and has sired – among other talented progeny – the premium stallion TS Wicket. Worldwide was then bought by para-dressage rider Joann Formosa; an extraordinary testament to his temperament! The pair
represented Australia at the London 2012 Olympic Games where they won gold in Grade 1B. Worldwide PB is by Weltbuerger (Weltmeyer) out of Bella (Brentano II), so the newly upgraded Waldfee carries some formidable blood. Her Thoroughbred dam, Cordura Ryegrass xx, was bred in Australia. Donnerstar CDS (Donnerubin DC - Gymnastic Grace x Gymnastik Star) was bred by Jacinda Younger of Chevaux Dansants Stables in Feilding and is owned by Ellen Mitchell. This lovely mare’s sire, Donnerubin DC (Donnertraum Delilah x De Niro) is a licensed NZ Warmblood who carries 100% German bloodlines. He stands at Chevaux Dansants. Donnerstar’s dam, Gymnastic Grace, is an Australian Warmblood by the outstanding Gymnastik Star, a premium Class 1 licensed and performance-tested Hanoverian, who stood at Stella Stud and left a great many champions. Gemstar (Galanthus - Keenan xx x Keen xx), another beautiful mare with Gymnastik Star blood, has also earned ‘principal’ status through her high performance results in dressage. She was bred by her owner, Phillipa Thompson. Her sire, Galanthus (Gymnastik Star x Graf Landau), stands at Kinnordy Stud in Australia and is the full brother of Kinnordy Gym Bello, who stands at Astek Stud here in NZ. Frangelico F (Figi R - Tilly x Jive Magic) was bred in Australia by Sappho Ransan-Elliott, imported by Brugs Nicholls as a foal, and is now owned by dressage rider Sophie Griffth. The mare’s sire, Fiji R, is a German-bred Oldenburg son of the brilliant Florencio (Florestan), five-year-old world young-horse dressage champion in 2004, six-year-old champion in 2005, and the sire of 44 licensed sons. Fiji R was one of his first foals. Frangelico F has enjoyed consistently good dressage results. A daughter of the legendary Sandro Hit, the KWPN STB mare SH Vinny (Sandro Hit - Winny x Lorenz) has also been upgraded. Vinny was bred in the Netherlands by T. Pittens of Nistelrode and was performance-tested there, with a total score of 75.5. Her dam, the equally modestly named Winny, is a KWPN STB ster preferent mare. SH Vinny competed successfully at Grand Prix in New Zealand with her owner, Brugs Nicholls, who is originally from the UK and has bred horses on both sides of the world. She describes the gorgeous Vinny as having a ‘super-strong’ stamp. ■

Bundeschampionat 2018
BY ADRIANA VAN PHOTOGRAPHY:
TILBURG PETER LLEWELLYN
The German young-horse championships, the Bundeschampionat, celebrated their 25th edition in 2018, welcoming around 880 horses and ponies to Warendorf. The Bundeschampionat is also a reflection of the current breeding scene in Germany. It should be said that there were fewer entries this year: If we look at showjumping, there were 69 starters in the five-year-old first qualifier (115 in 2011), and 117 (131 in 2011) in the qualifier for six-year-olds.
M
any breeders and spectators were complaining this year that the best young horses are staying home. Despite the negative comments it is always very interesting to see the horses, because you always learn something about different bloodlines.
Jumping bloodlines: Cornet Obolensky Taking a look at the offspring from certain stallions who are influencing young jumping horses, we can’t ignore the BWP-bred Cornet Obolensky (Clinton Rabanna vh Costersveld x Heartbreaker, bred by Thierry Degraeve). In the first of the five-year-old qualifiers he appeared twice as a damsire. But he is also represented by his sons: Colestus (out of Spice Girl R x Stakkato, bred by Hartwig Rellensmann);v Comme Il Faut (Ratina Z x Ramiro, Stamm 8145, bred by B&S Sportpferde GmbH); Cristallo (Cassie x Cassini I, bred by Ivo Auer); and Coronas 2 (Frau Antje x Calypo Ask, bred by Angelika Rutten). In the qualifier for six-year-olds, there were five Cornet Obolensky offspring plus two maternal grandchildren – one by his son Cornet’s Balou (out of Georgia x Continue, bred by Paul Schockemöhle).
same time as the Bundeschampionate, the Brussels Grand Prix was taking place and, given the wonders of modern technology, Vornholt’s secretary and Zhaschkow stud manager were watching it ‘live’ on their iPhone. Remarkably, victory went to Comme Il Faut under the saddle of Marcus Ehning, which caused great delight in the Vornholt camp. Certainly, the pure emotion of seeing everything come together is one of the beauty’s of breeding: Building from the foundations and seeing Comme Il Faut celebrate victory in Brussels at the same time as his daughter is winning Warendorf.
Comme Il Faut In the first five- and six-year-old qualifiers, Comme Il Faut had, respectively, three and six offspring – whittled down to two five-year-olds in the final, including the Rheinland-bred mare Chao Lee (out of Cobain Z x Chacco-Blue, bred by Otmar Eckermann). She, in fact, went on to win the final under the saddle of the breeder’s daughter, Katrin Eckermann. During the five- and six-year-old finals I was sitting next to Hubert Vornholt, who stands Comme Il Faut at his stallion station, Cornet Obolensky/Windows vh Costersveld (Clinton - Rabanna vh Costersveld x where is available with fresh semen. At the Heartbreaker

In the six-year-old final, with six Comme Il Faut offspring, it was a close call, with Katrin Eckermann finishing second with the OS-bred mare, Daddy’s Destiny (out of Double Action x Acasino B, bred by Lisa Frohberg). Another daughter placed sixth: The Westfalian-bred Cyber Zirkeline (out of Peggy x Phantom, bred by Kristina Rochell) under the saddle of Stephan Naber. Comme Il Faut himself won the Bundeschampionat as a five-year-old under the saddle of Franz-Josef Dahlmann and became reserve champion at the WBFSH-FEI World Breeding Championships for Young Horses in Lanaken in 2010. As a sixyear-old he was runner-up at the Bundeschampionat with Dahlmann.
Stakkato (Hann) Stakkato (Spartan - Pia x Pygmalion, bred by August Meyer) appeared five times in the pedigrees of the five-year-old horses in the first qualifier, three in the finale, plus six six-year-olds with Stakkato in their bloodline– none of whom progressed to the final. As a five-year-old Stakkato himself won the Bundeschampionat under the saddle of Eva Bitter. The seven-year-old winner was the Oldenburg-bred stallion Stargold (Stakkato Gold - Charme x Lord Weingard, bred by Gestüt Sprehe) under the saddle of Tobias Meyer. Stakkato Gold (Stakkato Wertherroeschen x Werther, bred by Arend Kamphorst) is one of the most popular of Stakkato’s sons. Placed in the final was also the Hanoverian gelding Sympatico (Stakkato Cameron Diaz x Cornet Obolensky, bred by Hans-Heinrich Brüning).
French invastion by Diamant de Semilly The influence of Diamant de Semilly (Le Tot de Semilly - Venise des Cresles x Elf III, bred by Jules Mesnildrey) cannot be overlooked. In the five-year-old final his Hanoverianbred son Dark Knight B (out of Coco Chanel x Cordalmé Z, bred by Peter
Enders) finished second in the hands of Maximilian Wricke. Also placed was the Oldenburg-bred mare Diaradonna (Diarado’s Boy - Lavandula x Cartoon, bred by Paul Schockemöhle) under the saddle of Tobias Thoenes. Diarado’s Boy (Diarado - Abenteuer x Argentinus, bred by Britta Lübbers) is a son of Diarado (Diamant de Semilly Roxette I x Corrado I, bred by Klaus Thingholm Kristensen). The Oldenburg stallion Diaron (Diarado - Lenda-Cara x Come On, bred by Manuela Lachnit) won the sixyear-old final under the saddle of Patrick Stühlmeyer. Also the OS-bred stallion Diavoltan (Diarado - Weltana x Acord II, bred by Harm Oncken) was placed in the final under the saddle of Andreas Kreuzer. Finally, the six-year-old Hanoverian-bred Diamant de Plaisir (Diamant de Semilly - Lady Pleasure x For Pleasure, bred by Gerd Sosath) under the saddle of Thomas Heineking. Second in the seven-year-old final with Tobias Thoenes was the OS-bred gelding Dante MM (Diarado - April Love x Luxius, bred by Volker Ruehne), while the Holsteiner-bred gelding Dynamit Nobel KW (Diarado Ramona XIII x Narew xx, bred by Gestüt Nordvorpommern GmbH) under the saddle of Alexa Stais was also placed in this same class, as well as the Oldenburg-bred stallion De Quidam (Diarado - Landirubina x Quidam’s Rubin, bred by Heinrich Lübberding).

And then there were others! The Mecklenburg-bred stallion Chacco-Blue (Chambertin - Contara x Contender, bred by Karl-Heinz Kopp) was represented in every age-group class in the final. Also via his sons, such as the Westfalian-bred stallion Chacco’s Son I (out of Lancley x Lancer III, bred by Wilhelm Schwenker). With many more sires represented in Warendorf, it was educational to witness the trends in breeding and analyze breeding decision based on the most represented sires. ■

Alligator Fontaine 1988-2018 rIP
www.stutteriask.dk
BERNARD LE COURTOIS/TRANSLATION CHRISTOPHER KING It was with great sadness that we announce the death of our stallion Alligator Fontaine. It’s true that he lived to the great old age of 30, but it’s always a difficult moment to say goodbye to a horse that has shared 30 years of your life. BY
A
lligator was born at the stud of Michel Pelissier (Normandy) with an exceptional pedigree, as he was the son of Noren-Gayssire Fleury – horse of the year 1984 in the USA, and Nighty Fontaine, the sister of the famous stallion, I Love You – horse of the year 1983 in the USA, and winner of the World Cup in that same year. I bought him as a foal with our friend Marion Grimblat – Alligator was then brought up at the Haras de Brullemail. He started his jumping career with Pascale Wittmer, and was the revelation of the six-year-old generation. Syndicated for five million francs, he joined the stables of Michel Robert, but it was later with Eric Navet that he achieved his greatest success, French Champion in 1999, twice finishing second in the Derbies of La Baule and Aachen, winner of the Sires of the World, as well as many other international victories. He is still the only SF stallion to have reached the jumping performance index of ISO 190, closing his career at 16 as Penelope Leprevost’s first GP horse, and then with Sophie Coutureau-Pelissier at 17. Alligator started breeding at the age of six in 1994 but, unfortunately, French breeders didn’t use him very much. He only bred 400 foals in 23 years of breeding (1994-2016). Nowadays some stallions breed that many in only one year! For those of you who are still nostalgic for this great stallion there is still a stock of frozen semen. Alligator produced 66 horses with a jumping index of 120 or more. His most famous international champions are the stallion Otello du Soleil, ISO 169, and the crack bronze medal winner at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games in Hong
Kong, Jalisca Solier, ISO 184 – Steve Guerdat’s mare of his lifetime – jumping for the Swiss team. Alligator has also proven to be an excellent sire of broodmares, especially at Brullemail stud-farm where his daughters, like Jenna Mail, have produced the crack Ornella Mail (ISO 175); Halliga Mail has produced four GP horses, including the five-star Quarto Mail (ISO 158); Impala Mail also gave four GP horses, including Matahari Mail (ISO 153).... Alligator became a globetrotter as he not only bred in France, but also travelled to Argentina for one year, then two years at Flyinge in Sweden, before coming back to France. He was finally stationed in the south west of France to breed, where we decided to retire him at 27 years old in the sun in the Averyon at the Haras du Battut where Renée Sturbois took great care of him. Alligator was a very charismatic horse with the most stunning look in his eyes, and will always be one of our most special and preferred horses. Beauty, strength, courage, scope, health and kindness are the best words to describe him. The loss of Alligator is a page that turns in the history of our Brullemail stud farm, but his blood will live here forever through his daughters and grand-daughters, breeding along the motherline of Nighty Fontaine, his dam, as well as through the success of young stallions like Andain du Tailie*Mail or Tresor Mail, his nephew, competing at this year’s World Equestrian Games in eventing and winning a bronze medal with the French team. ‘Adieu’ my handsome Alligator. ■ (Alligator appears on our front cover)

the young blood upgrading Polish dressage
BY AGATA
GROSICKA JULIA SWIETOCHOWSKA
PHOTOGRAPHY:
Having seen the foal auction during the WBCYH in Ermelo with an outstanding selection of the world-class dressage foals, I was really curious what to expect in Radzionkow, the Silesian district of Poland where a month later the first-ever private foal auction was organized on the September 2 as a side event accompanying the Polish dressage championships.
T
he Cichon Brothers have certainly been very busy for the last couple of months travelling around Poland, meeting with breeders and selecting the foals, and I have to admit that they were well prepared for the auction. But, is our local market prepared for such an event? Are the Polish people ready to buy a four-month-old foal on the spot? We have this saying in Polish which, translated into English, says ‘you buy a cat in the bag’ – meaning you don’t know what in there and what’s gonna grow out of it! On the other hand the selection of the foals was not just random and their prices – compared to what they might cost in the future – represented a real bargain.
World-class quality at bargain prices Two foals by Revolution (the brand new five-year-old champion of the world), two by Fürst Sav (a very charismatic son of Foundation), one by Don Deluxe and one by Fürstentraum (the sire of Patrick’s Kittel’s mare, Well Done), one by Franklin (one of the top stallions from Helgstrand Dressage), and four by Sir Europe (Sir Donnerhall) – were combined with no less exquisite local mares. Of the 11 presented colts, four were sold during the auction, and two

more the following day when prospective buyers visited the stables and talked to the breeders. The colts that found new owners right on the spot were: Fürst Olymbrio (Fürst Sav [Foundation] - Vestgaardens Olympia x Blue Hors Don Olymbrio) SP Polish-bred by MM Brothers, sold for €4,500. This colt is of a very modern type and has inherited a lot of charisma from his sire. Fabled Frank (Franklin [Ampere] - Arist x Crist), a DWB colt bred by Joanna Zelazowska, sold for €5,500. His origins represent a very fashionable combination of Dutch and German dressage bloodlines, and his sire, Franklin, comes from Helgstrand Dressage – Cichon Dressage’s business partner. Sir Bon Bon (Sir Europe [Sir Donnerhall] Galice x Fürst Heinrich) – a DWB colt bred by Joanna Zelazowska – sold for €6,000. His classic pedigree speaks for itself, and the breeder also focused on selected mares which, as a result, produced offspring of the same quality as their western peers. Dalida – an Oldenburg mare (Sir Europe [Sir Donnerhall] - Tequila xby Ron William) bred by Marek Twardak, sold for €4,500. The Oldenburg colt Raphael G ( Revolution - Quinnie G x Quaterback) dam’s bloodline includes such great horses as bred by Paweł Gasinski

Sir Bon Bon (Sir Europe [Sir Donnerhall] - Galice x Fürst Heinrich) – a DWB colt bred by Joanna Zelazowska Rohdiamant, Romanov and Rubin-Royal. The two foals that sold the following day were: Brawor (Sir Europe - dam Burza Wiatrow x Pegasus HB), a Polish SP colt bred by Julian Ordyniec. The dam comes from very wellknown bloodline of Polish dressage horses. Pegasus HB was the only Dutch stallion (Flemingh) licensed in Poland and has contributed a great deal to Polish breeding. The second was Raphael G ( Revolution - Quinnie G x Quaterback), an Oldenburg colt bred by Paweł Gasinski. Pawel Gasinski, a well known Polish breeder, was very satisfied with the auction results, though he only sold one of his two presented foals; “It was the first auction of that type and that level, very professional and very well prepared. I will definitely
participate in future editions. I am sure that when more people find out, all their efforts will pay off. I have 12 mares in my stable outside Warsaw, three of them are expecting – two by Jovian and one by Revolution. I’m getting some more impregnated in the near future using the semen of acclaimed Hannover, KWPN and other western stallions.” According to Mateusz Cichon, the main organizer of the event; “I’m very pleased with the course of the auction. We managed 100 percent to organize it the way we wanted, though we had no experience in that matter. I feel that number of foals we sold was a little bit low, but it is still a good result for the first edition with an average price of €5,250 – no lower than the prices reached abroad. Next year we have to work out the question of ‘reserve prices’ – but we may give them up completely just like in case of the Verden auctions. “I selected the foals with our business partner, Kamil Pulinski. We saw them all twice because in case of such young horses it is easy to make a wrong choice. Then we consulted with Allan Hansen – my coach from Helgstrand Dressage – regarding our final choices. “We had only Polish buyers as we were a little afraid to promote the auction abroad. Next year we’ll do so. I am pretty certain that Polish foals are both attractive in their quality and price. Our local market is still quite small. We need a few years to make it a tradition. In two years we’re planning to sell adult horses as well, and our ultimate goal is to create the event as big as those in Germany or Holland.” ■

Strzegom is the place to be in September
BY AGATA
GROSICKA PHOTOGRAPHY: KATARZYNA BRODA, KATARZYNA BORYNA
The Polish Association of Young Horses this year organized their various championships in one location and at the same time. On this occasion, from September 20-23, Strzegom in the Lower Silesian region of Poland hosted all three Olympic disciplines: dressage, eventing and showjumping.
A
s it happened, this idea was an extremely successful initiative, gathering all the riders in one place and providing opportunities to socialize as well as showing the status of sport horse breeding in Poland. Which discipline is more advanced in terms of breeding, and which horses are be more capable of competing at an international level? Questions that are complex and not necessarily with easy-to-define answers, so we will look at each of the three disciplines separately.
Age-group categories in dressage These horses competed in three age-groups: four-, five-, and six-year-olds, divided into Polish-bred horses and those with foreign passports. Interestingly, although one may have expected complete dominance from German- or Dutch0bred horses – which seems an obvious rule in the dressage world – some of the results were quite surprising.
In the four-year-old category, the winning Polish-bred horse was Karamba SP (Cardamom SP - Cerkwica SP x My Will [KWPN]), bred by Zbigniew Fialkowski, owned and ridden by Karolina Mazurek, with the final score of 8.20. In the ‘foreign horse’ category, the Oldenburg stallion Daily Deal Junior OLD (Daily Day West - Rascala H OLD x Fürst Heinrich), bred by Witold Pietrzyk and ridden by Gabriela Jaworska-Mazur scored 8.30 points... So we could say that the level of performance for these two winners was very similar. However, with horses so young and equally talented, anything can happen on their way to Grand Prix level, so let’s hope for the best.
Five-year-olds
The winner of the Polish-bred category was a Trakehner stallion called All in One (All Inclusive - Alana [Trak] x Agar [Wlkp]) bred by Monika Machlowicz-Wojsiat, ridden by Aleksandra Szulc who recorded a final score of 7.58. The foreign category was taken by storm by the beautiful Danish Warmblood stallion Heiline’s Zanzier (Blue Hors Zack - Danceline TS [Hann] x De Niro [Hann]), owned by MM Brothers and ridden by Jan Gawecki representing Cichon Dressage with the total score of 9.26 points. Interestingly, this charismatic chestnut, licensed in Poland as well as Denmark, (where he is represented by Helgstrand Dressage), has already had his ups and downs. Two months ago the same couple competed in the Ermelo WBCYH and did not perform the way they would have wished. However the score achieved in Strzegom proves that Zanzier has great potential to Four-year-old eventing runner-up: Erudycja (Albaran xx - Eurudyka SP x Palegro become a Grand Prix horse on an [Westf]), ridden and owned by Malgorzata Swiderek-Baran international level, but simply

victory: “We’ve been working together for a couple of years now. (Last year in Strzegom the couple also won the Polish category with the score of 8.50. This time their canter was valued at 9.50). We have improved with every single day and every single ride.” She went on to say: “On Sunday the judge Peter Engel from Germany asked me ‘what have you done to her? You are half a point even better than yesterday. Everything was perfect – in the right lines and the way it should be.’ He also added that ‘Victory is the right name for that mare’.” A multi-medallist at Polish senior dressage championship level with her two previous horses, Skowronska-Kozubik knows exactly how to carve such a diamond into a quality Grand Prix horse. With the assistance of her coach, and the horse’s breeder, Andrzej Salacki (who is also the coach of the Polish national dressage team), they are heading the right direction. “We did not plan to go to Ermelo this year. Instead we worked at home. Slowly but surely. I love riding Victory. She’s so obedient and easy to teach. Maybe we’ll try our chances in the seven-year-old competition. We’ll see.” Certainly, I would love to see Victory and Skowronska-Kozubik ride in the world’s international dressage arenas so that other people are able to enjoy their performances as well.

This was a new performance record for Polish-bred horses in the younghorse dressage championships. So in this age-group, precision and submission was awarded a 9.50, which eclipsed the world-class dressage bloodlines. Skowronska-Kozubik was obviously delighted with her
The four-year-old eventing category combined the Polish and foreign-bred horses, and was won by a gelding Dolce Bie M (Biegacz M Dolce Vita M x Veloce de Favi), bred by Prudnik State Farm and ridden by Artur Spolowicz. The runner-up – and the horse that caught everyone’s eye, including the judges – was a lovely, happy mare as described by the judges: Erudycja (Albaran xx - Eurudyka SP x Palegro [Westf]). Her rider and owner Malgorzata Swiderek-Baran was very proud with the performance of her favorite mare: “I think she may be the horse of my lifetime. Our relationship is very strong. She’s like my pet. I found her in a Facebook advertisement two years ago and immediately liked her. I went to her breeder, Ewa Fabinska (Wigry Farm), checked her out, and bought her. What I really like about her is her calm head. She’s very obedient and focused on the rider which is very crucial in case of a good eventing horse. She is also 60% Thoroughbred, which is very good compared to my previous horse Epikur who was 40% October 2018

The five-year-old Polish-bred winner was a gelding Dante M SP (Chacco Fly [Oldbg] Dalia SP x Cancoon [Holst]) bred by Andrzej Michalski and ridden by Magdalena Tabis. The foreign winner was a grey Holsteiner stallion Castigo de Amor (Cascadello - S-Con Lime x Con Air) ridden by Andrzej Gloskowski. This was the most popular category among the riders with 20 participants. The Polish six-yearold category was won by the bay gelding La Vulkano L SP (Vulcan L [Westf] - La Marina L SP SP mare Victory (Rock And Roll [Hann] - Whiskey Girl x Worldly [Hann]), six-year-old Polishx Marino [KWPN]) bred dressage winner with record score, ridden by Zaneta Skowronska-Kozubik. bred by Jan Ludwiczak Thoroughbred and really couldn’t canter so well in threeand ridden by Dawid Skiba. BWP stallion selections: 2019 dates and locations

The dates and locations of the 2019 BWP stallion approval have now been announced. The second phase takes place January 17-19, in Azelhof in Liege. The BWP Top Stallion Auction is scheduled that same weekend, on Saturday, Januar,19. Only three-year-old candidates are expected at the second phase.
T
he Third Phase will take place March 1416. At the request of the stallion keepers, BWP has been looking for accomodation providing fixed (permanent) boxes. The ‘Zilveren Spoor’ in Moorsele made an interesting offer, and consequently the BWP Board decided to organize the third phase in the Zilveren Spoor. In 2019, there will be some more innovations : • During the second phase, only the three-year-old candidates will be judged. The older stallions will exclusively be presented during the third phase. The four-year-old jumping-bred stallions are expected to participate in at least two laps of the 2019 stallion competition. • BWP Top Stallion Auction: will be open to the
candidate auction stallions who go through to the third day of the stallion approval. The candidate auction stallions who do not succeed may be auctioned via an internet auction. In that way, every stallion gets the chance to be auctioned. • Obligatory inspection of the arena on Wednesday: Where, in earlier times, the stallion keepers were free to choose, they now are obliged to have their jumping-bred stallions jump twice over a line of lower fences. For the dressage-bred stallions, there will also be a short moment for inspection of the arena in hand or in free movement. New chairman announced for Horse Sport Ireland SUSAN FINNERTY PHOTOGRAPHY: COURTESY HSI
BY
Horse Sport Ireland, the national body for the Irish Sport Horse industry, has a new chairman with the appointment of Kildare businessman Joe Reynolds. The announcement by the Minister for Agriculture, Michael Creed and Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross was made earlier this month.
A
nd in a further shake-up (or down-sizing from its original unwieldy size) of Horse Sport Ireland, three ministerial appointments were made three days later when Lucinda Creighton, Clare Hughes and Mary Lambkin Coyle were added to the Horse Sport Ireland board. Joe Reynolds, whose daughter Judy competed in dressage at the Rio Olympics and recent World Equestrian Games, replaces acting chairman Jim Beecher who has held that role since February 2017. The businessman, sport horse breeder and racehorse owner joined the Board of Horse Sport Ireland two years ago and is a member of its Finance, HR and Commercial Committee and Dressage and Para Dressage High Performance Committee. Speaking after the appointment was announced, Joe Reynolds said: “I am delighted to take up the position of chairman in an organisation which I have been involved with for many years. Exceptional strides have been made on the Indecon recommendations, within Horse Sport Ireland, over the past 12 months and we are now at a very exciting stage. I am very much looking forward to continuing that good work with the management team.” Ronan Murphy, appointed last summer in his role as Horse Sport Ireland CEO said: “I would especially like to welcome Joe to the important role of chairman of Horse Sport Ireland at this exciting time in the sport horse sector in Ireland. I have worked with Joe over the past year on the board of Horse Sport Ireland and on a number of committees and we are very fortunate to have someone with his in-depth corporate and sector knowledge, enthusiasm and experience chairing the new board. Also taking their places alongside the chairman and three government appointees on the streamlined board are Lt.Col. Tom Freyne (Coaching and Education Advisory Council), Taylor Vard (High Performance Sport Advisory Council), and Adrian Flynn (Equestrian Sport and Recreation Advisory Council), who have all
been recently elected to the HSI board. Showjumper Edward Doyle (Breeding & Production Advisory Council) will be the voice of breeders at the board table, and the one remaining seat, representing the Northern Ireland sector, is expected to be filled shortly. The streamlining of the Horse Sport Ireland board was one of the recommendations made by the Indecon report last year. Commenting on the appointment of Joe Reynolds, the Irish Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed alluded to this when he said: “I am very pleased that Joe has agreed to take on the challenge of chairing the new Board of Horse Sport Ireland. His extensive experience in the equine sector makes him an ideal chair to provide strategic leadership and continue the implementations recommended by Indecon to expand employment and create the maximum contribution to the Irish economy.”

Take a Chance On Me Z - Sire of the World 2018 Eleven stallions produced clear rounds in the jump-off of the Sire of the World 2018 class, with the nine-year-old Zangersheide stallion Take a Chance On Me Z being the fastest. It was thrilling sport Friday evening in the Sires of the World, to which the audience had flocked en masse to see the 61 stallions at work in this Grand Prix over a height of 1m50. Eventually, there were 20 combinations that qualified for the jump-off. The first starter, Dayro Arroyave, immediately took the lead with a clear round in 42.68 seconds with Iceman de Muze (Erco van’t Roosakker), and would eventually finish eighth. One combination later, Christian Ahlmann entered the arena with the nine-year-old Take A Chance on Me Z. He immediately showed that his chestnut stallion clearly inherited the speed of his father and set the time-to-beat in 38.45 seconds. In the end, there was no other combination that managed to top off this incredible jump-off. “Take A Chance on Me Z starts to look more and more like his father, Taloubet Z,” Ahlmann says. “I've been riding him from the beginning and he’s been getting better and better. This year we already finished second in the Longines Global Champions Tour in Valkenswaard, fifth during CSI4* Munster and sixth and seventh during the CSI4* of Wiesbaden. In addition, we achieved several top 10 rankings in CSI5* Chantilly and CSI5* Estoril. If everything continues like this, you will certainly see him in action during the upcoming World Cup season.” Olivier Philippaerts was runner-up with Cigaret JVH Z (Clinton), another nineyear-old Zangersheide-bred stallion, in a time of 39.87 seconds. Third place went to Brazilian Marlon Modolo Zanotelli. stopping the clock in 40.57 seconds with Icarus, a 10-yearold Douglas VDL son. Fourth place to Ahlmann again, this time with Colorit, in a time of 41.25 with this 15-year-old son of Coriano Z. Kiristian Houwen closed the top five in 41.64 seconds riding Edinburgh –a nine-year-old son of Vleut.
