SUmmer DrOUGHt.... AND, tHeN!

T

he drought struck the majority of European countries in an exceptional way this summer. The full spectrum of weather phenomena. Following an extremely wet winter, an unpredictable summer heatwave, and all its consequences! Scandinavian countries have only received between 20 and 50 percent of their regular rainfall in recent months. The situation is particularly critical around the Baltic where Sweden has suffered the worst drought for 75 years. In England, France, the Netherlands and Germany, meadows have baked and even burst into flames. Believe it or not, in some regions, the pastureland and meadows filmed from the air have turned more yellow than the fields of wheat! The immediate consequence has been that herds did not find their usual food. Farmers and horse breeders have had to tap into their stocks of hay reserved for the winter in order to compensate for the lack of fresh grass. A short-term solution for every consequence is immeasurable. If it is certain that the necessary ‘repairs’ will impact avalailable stocks, and thus the price of hay and straw, what about all feed (granules, pellets, flakes) for next winter? According to Stephae Joty from Royal Horse (Neovia); “The prices for complete feed will rise, no doubt, and specialists are talking about a minimum increase of between five and 10 percent.” Another question deserves to be asked.

Breeders often evoke – justly so – the benefits of spring grass for their horses and, in particular, for mothers and their suckling foals. Will this deficit of ‘fresh grass’ have consequences for the development of the youngest? What might we conclude from this summer drought? That it is an exceptional phenomenon and there is no reason whatsoever to worry about it? In our opinion, no! The experts are formal. This drought is the consequence of what is known as ‘global warming’, in full acceleration. So, this is not the first dry summer (after such a tough winter in the same areas), and probably not the last. With a two-degree Celsius increase in the average annual temperature forecast by experts to occur throughout the old continent before 2030, it goes without saying that this overheating is going to impact the traditional regions of horse breeding, of race and sport, from Ireland to Holstein, via evergreen Normandy, and beyond. So, we shall have to adapt ourselves or die from warmth! But should we not react? Should we not become active participants – with our respective fields of expertise (breeding, production), together with other sporting actors (organizers, competitors) – in a joint reflection of how to decrease, at our small level, not only the negative influence of greenhouse gases, but also all our activities that contribute to climate degradation? It is a question of responsibility, solidarity... Of survival. Not only for us, but also for our horses on our unique planet. Xavier Libbrecht September 2018

Top price for a Big Star offspring: On the last Saturday in July the festival of foals in Donaueschingen was held when 16 so called ‘Überflieger’ – high-flyers – were presented by the German breeders of sport horses. Riders competing at the tournament on the Immenhöfen were willing to pay high prices for future stars, as stallion keepers made their way from the far north of the country down to the Black Forest. It was the first foal in the ring – Pennylyn GE (Big Star - Pennsylvania GE x Cornet Obolensky) – the athletic daughter of Olympic champion Big Star (Quick Star - Jolanda x Nimmerdor), who reached the top price of €27,000 (US$ 31,466). One of the most successful stables from Baden-Württemberg secured this star prospect who was bred by by Steffen Jahn from Wolfersdorf. A colt bred by Edgar Langen, Remagen, changed hands for €20,000 (US$23,308) when Offspring (Origi d’Or - Melodie x Landjunge) was bought by the stallion stud Volz in Schleswig-Holstein. Also popular was Valana (Vingino - Valentine T x Verdi), the beautiful filly with great paces, bred by Frank Timmrech from Schwarzholz, for whom Austrian buyers paid €18,000 (US$20,977). The hammer fell at €17,000 (US$19,812) for the son of Comme il faut: Come again (out of Suerte Blanca x Lancer II), bred by Gerd Gross, who will move to the stable of a showjumping rider competing in Donaueschingen. Don Johnson HH (Don VHP Z - Miss Sparrow x Cormint), perhaps the first foal of Global Champion star Don VHP Z (Diamant de Semilly - Sara van het Parelshof x Voltaire), presented by Wolf-Dieter Wagner, sold for €15,500 (US$18,064) to another showjumping rider. Stakko Blue (Stakkato Gold - Cheyenne Blue x Chatender), bred by Boris Gruber, will move to a jumping stable in Belgium for €13,000 (US$15,150, while one of the last sons of the late Olympic champion Cento (Capitol I - Viola x Capitano) – Call me back (out of Kimba la Vie x Kiwi) will remain in the Black Forest at the Dobel Stud for €10,000 (US$11,654. It took auctioneer Hendrik Schulze Rückkamp 90 minutes to wind up the auction with a higher average price of €12,731 (US$ 14,837). Auction manager Fritz Fleischmann was more than happy: “This auction was a highlight. Fantastic atmosphere, and foals found Top-priced filly – Pennylyn GE (Big Star x Cornet Obolensky great new owners. I’m sure we will hear from them in the future.” S.G. The 17th Elite Foal Auction at the Oldenburg Horse Center Vechta achieved a phenomenal result. The prize highlight was Marco Polo by Marc Cain x San Amour I x Depardieu. This colt, bred by Ulrike Finck-Deichner from Hessian, was knocked down for €110,000 to a renowned dressage stable in Germany. The colt comes from the well-known Egale dam line. Inspirado, by Asgard’s Ibiza x Fürstenball x San Amour I, bred by Marcel de Wilde from Belgium, was sold for €68,000 to a famous stud farm. His dam, Finest Dream, also started her career in Vechta. Zara by Zackerey x Bretton Woods x Donnerhall, bred by the Blue Hors Aps stud farm in Denmark, changed hands for €59,000 to a highly respected dressage stable. Zara comes from the famous Finnländerin dam line. Her granddam Fabina, champion mare of the Oldenburg Elite Mare Show in Rastede 2003, is the sister of Olympic Champion Don Schufro. The demand for jumper foals was also very positive. The champion of the Vechta foal championship, Don King, by Diamant de Quidam x Contender x Cassini I, bred by Johannes Heinrichs from the Rhineland, was sold for €55,000 to a top-class jumping stable. Sire Diamant de Quidam was the OS champion stallion in 2015. The hammer for Quaresma (Quabri de L’Isle x Carembar de Muze [Glock’s London] x Calvaro), bred by Hartwig Schoof from Schleswig-Holstein, fell at €48,000 to a known stallion keeper. The colt comes from dam line 104, which also delivered Corradina (1998: Corrado I - Elsafina x Sandro), 2010 World Equestrian Games team gold medal winner with Carsten-Otto Nagel, bred by Hartwig Schmidt. According to auctioneer Fabian Kühl, “The meticulous selection of the elite foals was worth it. Our breeders were rewarded for the quality of their internationally highly popular foals.” Foreign customers also showed great interest in the Oldenburg quality: Overall, 28 of the 93 lots sold abroad to USA (five); Austria (three); Belgium (3); Russia (three); Sweden (three); Switzerland (three)’ the Netherlands (two), and one apiece going to Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Denmark, Estonia, and Serbia. This Oldenburg Elite Foal Auction realized Price highlight: Marco Polo by Marc Cain x San Amour I x total sales of over €1,650,000 – an average price of approximately Depardieu, bred by Ulrike Finck-Deichner €18,000. The stallions that are known in Westfalia as ‘NRW Landbeschäler’ (approved and recommended) were tested in August for the WFFS gene. The test was done by the owners voluntarily and 50 stallions have been tested. Four stallions were found to be carriers: Successful international showjumper A la Carte NRW (2008: Abke x Lux, breeder Jenny Ekkel); Christiano (2002: Coriano x Liberty Life, breeder Antonius Schulze-Averdiek); Lacordos (2000: Lancer III x Acord II, breeder Dr. Heinz Rieke); and Quantissimo (2014: Quantensprung x Distalzar, breeder Burkhard Wahler). CONSIDER THIS QUESTION?

Are mare families the secret to breeding jumpers?

BY

CHRISTOPHER HECTOR AND GEMMA ALEXANDER FEI

PHOTOGRAPHY:

Recently we looked at the question of whether the star showjumpers were more likely to be out of mares that were themselves stars in the competition arena, or were non-competing mares more likely to produce the goods? We saw that even two top breeders had diametrically opposing views....

J

an Greve feels that mares can't successfully hold down two jobs, while Joris de Brabander argues that the best jumping competition mares will produce the best jumpers. In the end we found that the figures did not 'prove' one way or the other - there are great jumpers out of mares that have never competed, and there are also great jumpers out of competition stars, although it should be noted that some of the greatest competition mares never produced anything of note in their second career. There did seem to be a slight tendency of recent times for more competitors out of competitors, which may say something about the switch in Warmblood breeding over the past 30 years, a switch that sees greater emphasis placed on competition results for both sire and dam... Back in 2008, Sporthorse Breeding Magazine compiled a list of what they saw as the top mare families. • #1: Holsteiner stamm 776 and the families of Ramiro, Locarno, Promised Land, Acorado, Landos, plus Calvados I and II contributed to this #1 ranking. • #2: KWPN stamm 020 (Emmerton, Mac Kinley, Modesto and Cavalier) • #3: KWPN stamm 114 (Looping, Okidoki and Vancouver d'Auvray) • #4: Holsteiner stamm 18b1 (Common Sense, Lapacco, Farn, Quantum, Lagos, Constant, Roman and Ronald) • #5: KWPN stamm 006 (Cycarlos LZ, Nairobi and Mr Blue) • #6: Holsteiner stamm 162 (Coster, Carthago, Non Stop, Feinschnitt I, Cascavelle, Lacros and Stanley) • #7: Holsteiner stamm 18a2 (Calle Cool, Castella, Chambertin, Calvadur, Chamonix, Komeet and Marmor) • #8: KWPN 093 (Kalusha, Oranta and Renville) • #9: Holsteiner stamm 741 (Calira , Olli-Pop and Leandro) • #10: SF stamm 42 (Ideo du Thot, Kingly du Reverdy and Elf d'Or) • #11: Holsteiner stamm 1298 (Chupa Chup, Emilion and Lord ) • #12: KWPN stamm 002 (Darco and Arko III) • #13: Holsteiner stamm 5401 (Leconte, Prima Vera and Fernando) • #14: Holsteiner stamm 104a (Corradina, Corland, Celano , Landetto and Carneval) • #15=: is BWP stamm 42 (Utopia and Vigo d'Arsouilles)

• #15=: Hannoverian stamm 763 (Sham and Tresor) • #15=: Holsteiner stamm 6372 (Concept and Lambrasco) • #15=: Holsteiner stamm 890 (Casall and Conally) • #15=: KWPN stamm 022 (Casadora and Paloma) • #15=: KWPN stamm 106 (Authentic and Olinda) • #15=: KWPN stamm 203 (Ever Mury Marais Z and Sherry Mury Marais Z) • #22: Holsteiner stamm 6893 (Cash 51 and Concerto II) • #23: SF stamm 7 (Quidam de Revel and Uriel) • #24: SF stamm 2 (Koro d'Or and Papillon Rouge) • #25: Holsteiner stamm 7299 (Lord Louis and Indoctro) Now I realise full well that serious commentators, such as Tom Reed of Morningside, question the methodology of this selection, pointing out that there is no control for the number of progeny and, therefore, the proportional success rate, but there can be no question that these are influential mare families. The 'best'? Well that might be a little like the search for the Holy Grail, but they will do as a starting point. Let's look at last year's top 25 jumpers as recorded on the WBFSH final standings, did they come from one of these famous families? Number one last year was the stallion Halifax van het Kluizebos (Heartbreaker - Dalida van de Heffinck x Fetiche du Pas). Dalida has no competition results, produced seven foals between 2007 and 2018, and Halifax, her first foal, is the only competitor so far. It is when we come to the 2nd dam, Ovanna de Heffinck (Darco - Havanna van de Heffinck x Furioso Z) that we find black type in abundance: Ovanna's 1996 daughter Tifanie, bred to Clinton, produced Adonis van de Silverhoeve, who jumped 1m60. Bred to Clinton the following year, Ovanna foaled another 1m60 jumper, the stallion, Upsilon van de Heffinck, and the following year, again with Clinton, another 1m60 jumper, Versace. By now, I guess the studmaster has got the message, and he is sticking with Clinton – not surprising since Clinton had been sent to the breeder, Hubert Hamerlink of the Van de Heffinck Stud in Belgian, by Clinton's owner, Henk Nijhoff who thought the stallion would have a better chance of being licensed in Belgium than Holland. In 1999, the cross produces the broodmare, Wiewe van de Heffinck. In 2007, Wiewe foals Halifax van de Heffinck (Cabrio van de Heffinck) who jumped 1m50, and in 2013, September 2018

the 1m25 competitor, Magic Star van de Eedthoek (by H&M Zilverstar). By the time we get to the 3rd dam, it is getting a little like one of those nineteenth century novels where the list of characters is so long there is an index of names to help you find your way. Havanna van de Heffinck, born 1984, by Furioso Z (Furioso II x Gotthard) out of a Siegfried mare, had 11 foals, including five broodmares who in turn produced 32 foals. Havanna's most successful competitor was the Darco stallion, Quiro van de Heffinck who jumped 1m50. The 4th dam is Winnette van de Heffinck (Siefried, out of a mare by the Selle Français stallion, Ut Fata), she did not produce a competitor, but her daughters, and granddaughters, certainly did. Winnette's first foal, Dinnette-F van de Heffinck (Feischnitt II) in her fourth season produced Kinnette van de Heffinck (Pachat II) who is the dam of three 1m60 competitors: Quelle Homme van de Heffinck (Quidam de Revel), Souvenir van de Heffinck (Heartbreaker), and another Heartbreaker, CP Aprilla. Dinette in turn produced Quinette (Heartbreaker) who produced the 1m50 jumper, Baileys van de Vijf Eiken (by Tresor). Bred to PKZ Contact van de Heffink, she foaled the 1m60 jumper, Grand Cru van de Vijf Eiken. Bred to Randel Z, Winnette produced Ginette in 1990, who in turn is the dam of the 1m60 jumper, Quelle Dame van de Heffinck (Quidam de Revel) who jumped 1m60, as well as two 1m50, one 1m45 and two 1m40 jumpers. Winnette's 1992 foal, Papillon van't Schorre (Feinschitt I van de Richter) produced the 1m60 jumper Boomerang van het Kluizebos (by Clinton) who jumped 1m60 successfully in Brazil. Papillon's full sister from the following year, Quinette

van't Schorre, bred to Clinton, foaled Waikiki van het Kluizebos who jumped 1m50 with Belgium’s Dirk Demeersman. All this would seem to establish fairly firmly that the really good jumpers come from top mare families but, be warned, success is far from inevitable. Even with a mare line as successful as this one, where we have looked at four mares, who between them had 37 foals, and then 106 grand hildren, with a further 21 great-grandchildren appearing on the Hippomundo performance pedigree, success is not overwhelming. Out of those 164 horses, 39 competed at an international level of 1m25 or better – with just nine competing at the magic 1m60. That is a percentage of 5.5 that made it to the highest international level, and really Halifax is the only superstar! Remember too, that we have been looking at the Quinette Ut mare line, the most famous line of Belgian master breeder, Hubert Hamerlink, whose experience meant that the matings were expertly planned.

Aachen top 20

It is also salutary to glance in the direction of this year's winner of the prestigious Grand Prix of Aachen, Prêt A Tout. The gelding is arguably the worst-bred superstar on the international scene. According to Arnaud Evain, Prêt A Tout is far and away the best son of Hiram Chambertin – indeed he really is the only decent product. There is one other on the Hippomundo data-base, the 1m45 mare, Ortis de la Bresse (Prince du Domaine). Arnaud sums it up: “The mare line has not produced anything remarkable, or even good, so luck, once again, is the winner in the progression of the genes.” Halifax is from the BWP mare line 13, not one of our famous families list. Second-placed, Clooney 51 (Cornet Obolensky - Fraulein vom Moor x Ferragamo) is from the Hanoverian stutenstamm 3193604, or on Claus Schridde's family catagorization, 1015. Third, Don VHP Z NOP (Diamant de Sémilly - Sara van het Parelshof x Voltaire) from the Dutch Merrielijn 83/ fokfamilies 283. Once again, my friend Huub van Aert helps me understand why there are more than one set of numbers. “In the Netherlands, there are two numberings. The fokfamilies, introduced by Joan van Gorkum in his series of Aachen Rolex Grand Prix winner Prêt A Tout (Hiram Chambertin - Gare a Elle Deux x books, Prestatie Families, while the NL Merrielijnen catagories were Stew Boy [Jalisco B]) ridden by Marcus Ehning (GER)

introduced by Jac Remijnse in his book, The Leading Mares of The Netherlands. Then you have the Belgian prestie families introduced by Jo de Roo.” Thanks Huub.... Fourth, Gancia de Muze (Malito de Rêve - Barones x Nimmerdor) Merrielijn 190/fokfamilies 400. G&C Arrayan (Baloubet du Rouet - Grandezza x Grannus) doesn't have a mare family reference, while HH Azur (Thunder van de Zuuthoeve - Sion va de Zuuthoeve x Sir Lui) is from Merrielijn 166/fokfamilies 2012. Creedance (Lord Z - Camantha x Notaris) fokfamilies 527. Royce (Cafe au Lait - Petula x Grandilot) Hanoverian stutenstamm 2188403, or Schridde's 711. Fine Lady (Forsyth - Dorina x Drosselklang II) Hanoverian stutenstamm 4192101, or Schridde's 480. The Swedish-bred Ohlala (Orlando van de Heffinck - Carrera x Cardento) doesn't seem to have a family, while Chesall Zimequest (Casall Ask Milva IV x Concerto) is from the Holsteiner stamm 1120. Babylotte (Dollar du Maurier - Ulotte x Concorde) is another orphan. Breitling LS (Quintero - Armonia La Silla x Accord II) is Holsteiner stamm 2151. Bull Run's Faustino de Tili (Berlin - Bijou van de Vijfheide x Darco) Selle Français 74, Cuplandra (Uprade - Tokelandra x Metall) Merrielijn 51/fokfamilies 212. All Star (Argentinus - April Love ZH x Almé) Hanoverian stutenstamm 3194601 or Schridde's 1039. And finally in 20th place, Garfield de Tiji des Templiers (Quasimodo Z - Paloma de Lauzelle x Goldspring de Lauzelle) Hanoverian stutenstamm 1192912 or Schridde's 1002.

From the opposite direction Okay so we have found none of the world's top families in our top 25 Aachen list, so let's go the other way. Let's look at this ‘number one mare family in the world’ – the Holsteiner stamm 776. The family's main claim to fame, indeed almost its only claim to real fame, is Ramiro. The stallion jumped Grand Prix, and produced a superstar jumper in Ratina. Ramiro was bred to many mares, and many really top mares, so his name does show up on the mare side of a number of good horses, but really given his opportunities, he does not seem to have had the lasting influence of the other great stallion of the time at Zangersheide, Almé, who has been a real stallion maker, not to mention sire of many top competitors. The other horse cited by Sporthorse magazine, Locarno (Lord Calidos - Wurzel x Romino) produced three 1m60 competitors, but they were, like their sire, bit players in the big sport. Really the same goes for all the 'stars' cited in the Sporthorse magazine list. Claus Schridde's reference book, Holsteiner Stutenstämme was published in 2008, and although there are seven pages devoted to Stamm 776, the list of international jumpers produced from this family is a pretty

Mary Lou 194 (Montendro I x Portland L) ridden by Henrik von Eckerman (SWE) motley crew: Cornwall W (Caretino x Lord), Tatjana (Lorenz x Moltke), Graf Rasputin (Ronald x Excellenz), Ibiza (Acord II x Landgraf), Leandra (Landgraf x Ramiro), Black Incipit (Wiesenferdl x Ronald) and the aforementioned Locarno. The stamm seems most famous for producing licensed stallions who really didn't produce anything very interesting... One of the famous mares of Stamm 776, Aktie, was awarded premium status at regional shows and also at the DLG in 1927. In 1939, she won with her family the state challenge trophy. Last month’s article set out to resolve competitor or broodmare, and ended up on both sides of the fence, I'm afraid this one produces a similar muddle. Yes, the top horses of the day tend to have lots of black type on their pedigrees, but they don't seem to be neatly arranged in numbered mare families...

Number crunching Over to our resident numbers cruncher, Gemma Alexander of Pacificjumpingbreeding.com to see what light the stats throw on the subject: And yet another way to look at the argument: how many September 2018

of the mares in the current top 100 rankings have had foals? And how many of these foals have gone on to have success in the competition arena? A quick browse on Horsetelex shows that there are 28 mares in the current top 100 jumping horses (based on earnings; really, the ranking system used is irrelevant, we just want a list of the top competing mares!). Number one on the list is Gazelle (Kashmir van Schuttershof x Indoctro); Gazelle has three foals recorded: Jess (Darco, 2009); King Kong (Darco, 2010); and Ninja JW van de Moerhoeve (Elvis ter Putte, 2013). The only one of these three to have a competition record is King Kong, who’s best result to date is a 28th placing in a two-star 1m45 class. Number two is HH Azur (Thunder van de Zuuthoeve), no recorded foals. Third-ranked is the wonderful little Fit for Fun 13 (For Pleasure x Fabriano). ‘Fitty’ has had two foals, Camargo 2 (Canturo, 2008); and Champ of Fun (C-Trenton Z, 2009). Camargo 2 has just stepped up to the big classes with Luciana Diniz, their best result to-date being a 14th place in a 1m60 class at the recent CSIO5* in Budapest. Number four in the rankings is Gancia de Muze (Malito de Reve x Nimmerdor). Gancia has one foal recorded, Louise van het Dalemhof (Nabab de Reve, 2011), no competition record to-date. Fifth is Coree de Hus (Cornet Obolensky x Liberty Life) who in conjunction with having a hectic competition career has also managed to produce NINE foals: Feeling de Hus Z (For Hero, 2010); Vodka de Hus Z (Vivaldi du Seigneur 2010); Congo de Hus Z (Churchill de Hus, 2011); Firenze de Hus Z (Ferron, 2011); Calvi de Hus Z (Caligula de Hus, 2012); Pacha de Hus Z (Pilot de Hus, 2012); Centurion de Hus (Ulixe, 2012); Verdi de Hus Z (Vivaldi du Seigneur, 2013); and Extase de Hus (Numero Uno, 2014). The wonders of Embryo Transfer! Of these nine, three have competition records: Feeling de Hus Z’s best result is a fifth place in a young-horse 1m40, Vodka de Hus Z’s best is a 27th place in a three-star 1m40 class; while Firenze de Hus Z’s best result is a sixth place in a young-horse 1m40. The next highest-ranked mare is Mary Lou 194 (Montendro I x Portland L), coming in at seventh; Mary Lou has no Fine Lady 5 (Forsyth x Drosselklang II) o f f s p r i n g ridden by Eric Lamaze (CAN) recorded.

12 September 2018

Number eight is Eric Lamaze’s Fine Lady 5 (Forsyth x Drosselklang II). Fine Lady has one foal recorded, Corny Star by Cornet’s Stern (2010), no competition record. The next two highest-ranked mares are Cita (Casall x Pik Ramiro, 14th) and California (L’Esprit x Libero H, 17th), neither of whom have offspring recorded. Number 18 is Ursula XII (Ahorn x Papageno), who has one foal: Ashton Dollipierre (Dollar de la Pierre, 2005). Her best result to-date is a second place in a two-star 1m35 class. The next five highest-ranked mares are all foal-less: 20thranked Suma’s Zorro (Douglas x Horos xx); 27th-ranked Bianca (Balou du Rouet x Cardento); 33rd-ranked Lizziemary (Cabri d’Elle x Acord II); 36th-ranked DSP Alice (Askari x Landrebell); and 45th-ranked Ohlala (Orlando x Cardento). Number 48 on the rankings is H&M Legend of Love (Landzauber x Corgraf), who is a mother of one: Child of Love 3 by Chilli Willi (2012), who has no competition results on record to-date. Again, the next nine highest-ranked mares have no offspring on record: 55th Twentytwo des Biches (Mylord Carthago x Kalor du Bocage); 57th Molly Malone V (Kannan x Cavalier); 58th Fair Light van’t Heike (Vigo D’Arsouilles x Darco); 60th Hannah (Dulf van den Bisschop x Kashmir van Schuttershof); 70th VDL Groep Arera C (Indoctro x Voltaire); 73rd Cuplandra (Upgrade x Metall); 80th Clinta (Clinton x Lord Pezi); 81st Claire Z (Clearway x Coronado); and 83rd Dsarie (Veron x Ahorn). The 92nd-ranked Babylotte (Dollar du Murier x Concorde) has had two foals: Waylotte DDH Z (Wolisco, 2010); and Karlotte DDH (Emerald van’t Ruytershof, 2015). While Karlotte DDH is too young to have a competition record, Waylotte DDH Z has a best result to-date of a fifth place in a one-star 1m40 class. Number 95 on the rankings is the sensational Cristalline (Cristallo I x Caretello B), who rose to fame under Australian jockeys Chris Chugg and Gabi Kuna. Before being sold to American young-gun, Adrienne Sternlicht after a stellar performance in the World Cup Final in 2016, Cristalline had two foals in Australia: Cristacon and Glenara KG Cinderella, both by Conquistador (Clinton x Heaartbreaker). Neither have a competition record to date. The final mare in the current top 100 is Sydney une Prince (Baloubet du Rouet x Alfa d’Elle) coming in at number 97; Sydney has no recorded offspring. So what we have found is that nine of the 28 mares in the current top 100 rankings have already had a foal – 32%, not an insignificant number! These nine mares have had 22 foals between them. Seven of these 22 foals have competition results in classes of at least 1.35m to date, with one already placing at the 1.60m level. Given the relatively young age of most of these offspring, these are fairly convincing results. I think this has me leaning more towards the de Brabander argument that mares can be both successful competitors and successful progenitors, aided of course by that wonderful modern invention of embryo transfer! ■

Impressive vintage

JEAN LLEWELLYN/PRESS RELEASE PHOTOGRAPHY: HANOVERIAN VERBAND/ERNST BY

A grand vintage impressed at the Herwart von der Decken Show in Verden recently. “Congratulations to the Hanoverian breeders on such top mares”, guest judge Johann Knaap from the Netherlands said. The dressage champion mare was Vanity Fair, while FS Darcos Diva was the dressage champion, and Belle Nobless was awarded as the best half-bred mare.

T

he Herwart von der Decken Show, saw 18 three-year-olds with jumping genes in their pedigrees competing, while 49 mares had valuable dressage bloodlines. Hann.Pr.A. FS Darcos Diva (Darco de Revel x Cassini Boy Junior), bred and exhibited by Hengststation Ferienhof Stücker, Weeze, was the best showjumping mare. The expressive bay impressed not only with her boundless ability over the fences, but also on the triangular course. According to Dr. Werner Schade, breeding and business manager of the Hanoverian Verband; “She could also have competed in the group of dressage mares”. Reserve champion mare was the Cornet Obolensky x Lordanos daughter Hann.Pr.A. Casablanca (bred and exhibited by Heinrich Ramsbrock, Menslage), who was only marginally inferior to her predecessor. Among the dressage mares Hann.Pr.A Vanity Fair by Vivaldi x Sandro Hit (bred by ZG Wencek, Moers, exhibited by Rhenania Pferde Andrea Klüfers, Alpen) was crowned the winner. Unbeatable in type and impression, she enthused with spectacular movements. The celebrated reserve champion mare in the top-class final ring was the Fürstenball x Farewell III daughter Hann.Pr.A. Feingefühl (bred and exhibited by Gaby HeyeHammerlage, Belm). Flawless in conformation and a modern dressage horse from head to toe, she was awarded her welldeserved sash. “We have seen the top of the top today,” Knaap said. “It is impressive that many breeders still own the mares.

You can be very happy if these mares go into breeding.” Three half-bred mares competed at the Herwart von der Decken Show. “Compliments to Hanover for the use of Thoroughbred stallions,” Knaap said. “This is an investment in future generations.” Hann.Pr.A. Belle Nobless by Bonaparte N AA x Vulkano (bred and exhibited by Heide and Helmut Peters, Hammah) was honoured as the best half-bred mare, who had already proven her outstanding quality within the class of jumping mares. The Herwart von der Decken-Show was the impressive prelude to ‘Verden International’. In addition to the Hanoverian Championships for riding, dressage and showjumping horses, equestrian sport up to advanced level was on show at an nternational level. Another highlight was the Verden auction of foals and broodmares, with the filly Bea Birmingham (Birmingham x Londonderry) achieving the top price of €28,000. She was bred and exhibited by Kurt Thieße from Neustadt. Until then, the colt Roache (bred and exhibited by Sally Hjort Schultz from Denmark), was leading the price scale with €24,000. It would have been an extraordinary story as his sire, Revolution, was becoming five-year-old world champion in Ermelo, the Netherlands, at almost the same time. The brown colt also descends from the dam line of Dallas, from which French Kiss, who became World Champion with Katrin Burger in 2004, also decends. While 57 promising dressage talents were in the spotlight on Saturday, Friday saw 37 showjumping foals and three broodmares create a lively auction. The highest price was for a Balou du Rouet x Calido son Beck's Balou (bred by Sabine Pedrina from Italy, exhibited by Jürgen-Heinrich Ohlhoff, Bergen) who was the most sought-after foal. The perky brown, whose dam was successful in advanced level jumping, was worth €15,000 to breeders from Schleswig-Holstein. “There were many names in the foals' pedigrees that have proven their performance in sport, which is a compliment to our breeders,” said auction manager Jörg-Wilhelm Wegener. ■

The 48th Breeding Championship in Baden-Württemberg saw a noticeable increase this year, not only in quantity but also in great quality, and some of these horses will also now be shown during the ‘Marbach Weekend’ in the autumn.

A

chieving an 8.00 for her three great basic gaits, the darkbrown mare Zoé, by Zalando and out of a Fürst Romancier dam, bred by Jose Rief, rocked her presentation. She was ridden by Ramona Ritzel, who purchased Zoé as a foal and will continue to train her. Second place was shared by two horses: The Don Diamond son Damian out a of Sandro Hit mother from the breeders Blessing. Alongside a son of Fürstenball out of a Scolari dam, bred by Resi Woerz. Both finished with an end note of 7.80.

Nördlinger auction that was best of the three-year-old stallions: Emilio. This son of Escolar from a Don Schufro dam was bought by Patricia Reuner Krebs two-and-a half years ago at the Elite Foal Auction. Katrin Burger is now training the horse, bred by Sabine Reisenauer, and presented him with great prowess to score victory with 8.10. Martha-Rose Kullen scored a double as breeder of the runner-up: Doubtless – a son of Don Nobless out of a dam by His Highness.

Dressage ribbons for 5yo and 6yo Darling Harbour – winner from the outset In the field of the four-year-old mares and geldings it was the Danto Weltino son, Darling Harbour, who topped the leaderboard. Bred by Maria and Ekkehard Hellstern the lovely dark gelding really demonstrated his canter highlights on the final day. Runner-up with 8.20 was Donna Tessa, a daughter of Don Frederic out of a Sir Donnerhall dam, bred and owned by Anton Herre. Third was another Don Frederic daughter, out of a mother by French Kiss: Equi Diamonds Doris Day, bred by Stefan Haas and owned by Martina Herboldsheimer.

The five-year-old Faysha (Lord Leopold), immediately impressed with her trot and great rideability. With 8.10, this Meder-bred mare from Bad Duerrheim, owned by Regina Meder, claimed victory, followed by Diva Georgina (Don Juan de Hus x Don Crusader) with an 8.00. She was bred by Rupert Wiedemann. Löwenherz topped the six-year-old age group – a son of Lingh out of a Wolkentanz I mother, bred by Gillian Kleinhans and owned by the Casper family.

Gold ribbon for Topas Stallion champions, First Date and Emilio He was a class on his own in the field of the three- and four-year-old stallions: the For Romance I x His Highness son First Date. This dark-bay stallion bred and owned by MarthaRose Kullen impressed with his exceptional basic gaits that were all awarded 8.50. It was once again a winner from the

This Birkhof champion is on his way to multiple titles. After winning the black-gold ribbon as six-year-old, the Totilas son won the golden sash in the field of seven- to eight-year-old dressage horses. The half brother to Lord Leopold was bred by Simone and Martin Meder and won this highest dressage class ridden by Nicole Casper.

Double win for Colorit offspring It was a successful championship for the internationally successful Württember stallion Colorit, when two of his off-spring – Concordia and Coolio – both bred by his owner Klaus Isaak, won the black-gold ribbons in their respective classes. Last year, Concordia won the bronze medal at the Bundeschampionat, and now with her trainer and rider, Andreas Kreuzer, this Colorit x Cassini I daughter was presented in a lovely manner, earning straight 9.00s from the judges. Kreuzer also showed Coolio (Colorit x Caretina) in the field of fiveyear-old horses, when he achieved an overall score of 8.10. ■

Verden’s shiny Hanoverian futurity prospects

JEAN LLEWELLYN/PRESS RELEASE PHOTOGRAPHY: HANNOVERANER VERBAND

BY

The horse show ‘Verden International’ is the perfect setting for Hanover’s best futurity prospects to determine their riding horse, dressage horse and showjumper champions. The stars of tomorrow regularly celebrate their first successes on the premises of the Hannoveraner Verband.

D

iamond Lady by Dimaggio x Benetton Dream (bred by Axel Windeler, Verden-Walle), perfectly presented by David Taylor, was nominated Hanoverian champion of fouryear-old mares and geldings. They finished just one-tenth of a point ahead of Dschamilja by Dancier x Lauries Crusador xx (bred by Rudolf Hagen, Großefehn) and Sascha Böhnke who were rewarded with the silver medal. Third place went to two horses: the Fürstenball x Rotspon son Fürst Flulidu (breeder: Iris-Maria Berger, Stuttgart), thanks to his rider Sophie Duprée’s masterly performance, and Little Hollywood by Livaldon x Wertschatz (breeder: Dr. Joachim Adams, Lingen) with rider Saskia Sophia Kunz. The four-year-old stallions were of stunning quality and the Celle state stud stallion Labbadio by Lissaro x Dancier (bred by Jan Heimsoth, Wahnebergen) convincingly won the competition. The eagerly moving brown stallion, born less than five kilometres away from the Rider’s Stadium, was presented by Mike Habermann. Premium stallion Quattroporte by Quantensprung x Stedinger (breeder: Burkhard Wahler, Medingen) under the saddle of Jose Pedro Baptista finished second. Two stallions finished equal third: Vidar by Viscount x Edward (breeder: Wolfgang Meyer, Spenge) and Catja Thomsen and Falihandro by Fürstenball x Dancier (breeder: Madonna Hedberg, Queensland/Australia) with rider Janine Drissen. Feingefühl by Fürstenball x Farewell III (breeder: Gaby Heye-Hammerlage, Belm) in the hands of Sandra Kötter dominated the division of three-year-old mares and geldings. The Hanoverian premium candidate loves Verden. She was already nominated reserve champion at the previous week’s Herwart von der Decken Show. Sarafina by San Amour x Christ (breeder: Walter P. J. Droege, Düsseldorf), and presented by Claudia Rüscher, followed at a distance. Third was Vlow by Vivaldi x For Compliment (breeder: Johannes zur Lage, Bersenbrück) with Anja Mohrahrend zur Lage.

The Don Nobless x Sandro Hit son Despacito (breeder: Josef and Karl-Heinz Rudde, Ahaus) won the division of three-year-old stallions with outstanding scores for basic gaits and training level. The shiny black youngster was presented by Greta Heemsoth. Fun4ever by Feedback x De Vito (breeder: Gerd Pigge, Lastrup) finished as vice champion. This half brother of the internationall successful stallion,

Foundation, was ridden by Felix Hilmer in Verden. Third place went to two stallions: Dancier Gold by Dancier x Weltmeyer (breeder: Georg Strübing, Vienenburg) with Anna-Sophie Fiebelkorn and Jenson Button by Jazz x His Highness (breeder: ZG Nordhausen and Rayber, Suhlendorf) with Judith Flach.

Showjumpers showing great promise The young Hanoverian jumpers showed great promise with the four-year-olds already shining at the showjumping championships. Glücklich by Grey Top x Stolzenberg (breeder: Peter Wisch, Otterndorf) was the happy winner (8.50). The grey mare had already impressed at mare shows with her quality, for example last year at the Herwart von der Decken Show in the showjumping and family competition. Now, twelve months later, she displayed all her qualities with Sven Rudolph and was rewarded with the title. Two horses finished second, equal on points (8.40): Mangoon by Messenger x Contagio (breeder: Carsten Müller-Rulfs, Ritterhude), competing with the breeder’s daughter Julia Müller-Rulfs, and Davie Jones by Diacontinus x Santini (breeder: Zuchtgemeinschaft Pudenz and Frühling, Großefehn) with Anja-Sabrina Heinsohn. The grey horse was sold at the Verden March auction only five months earlier, when he moved to the show stable of Rainer Schmerglatt. The five-year-old champion was celebrated following an exciting jump-off. Paganini by Perigueux x Lordanos (breeder: Eitel Wehrs, Steinwedel) and Tobias Meyer completed two convincing rounds for the gold medal (9.20 points). Meanwhile, silver went to Sir Chita by Stanley x Contender (breeder: Dr. Christoph Rowold, Haselünne), ridden by Anne-Estelle Janßen (8.83). Finishing third was Stakki by Stakkato Gold x Acord II (breeder: Peter Wernke, Holdorf) with Paweena Hoppe (8.63). There was a lot of excitement in the six-year-old division with time being the decisive factor in the jump-off. Karl Brocks and San Classica by Sandro Boy x Classiker (bred by the breeders’ alliance Vincke & Ahlers, Weyhe-Dreye) made short work of the task and won the title with a two-second advantage in fast and cheeky style (0/40.45). The duo had already won the vice championship title last year. Silver went to Policeman by Perigueux x Acord II

(breeder: Heinz Sprenger, Fritzlar) ridden by Eva Bitter (0/42.36). The successful showjumping rider had won the Verden Grand Prix three years ago with his sire Perigueux. Third was the already well-known Gunfire PJ by Grey Top x Contender (breeder: Pferdezucht Dr. Jacobs GbR, Bierbergen) and Patricio Muente (0/43.45) who had won the title in the five-year-old division last year.

Dressage finale in Verden The last Hanoverian champions at ‘Verden International’ were determined in the dressage arena. Farewell’s Fritz by Farewell III x Sir Donnerhall (breeder: Manfred Wahmhofft, Wallenhorst) and Carola Koppelmann took a victory lap in the five-year-old division, having scored 9.00 for both trot and rideability. The vice-champion’s title went to Bounty by Benicio x Calypso II (breeder: Hannes Brüning, Ochtmannien) who earned the highest score for walk (9.00) with Swedish rider Antonia Öhrstam. This

handsom bay horse has developed into a fantastic athlete. The vice champion of four-year-old riding horses last year also finished fourth at the 2017 Bundeschampionat. Janine Drissen and privately owned stallion Bob Marley by Bon Bravour x De Niro (breeder: Frank Lage, Dannau) celebrated with a bronze medal after scoring 8.50 for both trot and overall impression – average 8.00. Best Friends by Bordeaux x Don Primero (breeder: Eva and Dr. Ulf Möller, Hagen) won the six-year-old final with Lena Stegemann, scoring an 8.20 average, his highest mark coming for walk 9.00. The Diamond Hit x Royal Diamond son Deduschka Moros (breeder: Wiesbadener Jugendwerkstatt GmbH, Wiesbaden) and Lena Waldmann earned the second highest score (8.10), scoring 8.50 for trot, canter and overall impression, ahead of Spotlight by Sir Donnerhall x Wolkentanz (breeder: Carsten Müller, Neustadt), who was the highestpriced horse of the 2017 Verden March Auction, ad completed the top three with Tessa Rank. Spotlight’s best marks were 8.50 for trot and overall impression, for a final average of 8.00 ■

eduardo Campos... From Spain, with passion

Yeguada Campos stallion and 7yo champion Clarence C (Carano - Kira XVII x Lavall I)

TILBURG PRIVATE COLLECTION

BY ADRIANA VAN PHOTOGRAPHY:

Eduardo Campos (40) and Eva van Eeckhoudt (36) are very passionate about breeding. They met ten years ago, and that is when they decided to breed more seriously. “During the first five years I didn’t have a clear idea of where I wanted to go with my breeding. I already had some mares, so really breeding was for a little bit of fun.”

S

ince then, however, Yeguada Campos has had an interesting journey, developing into a highly regarded stud farm. Eduardo and Eva have also found time to start their own family: Rodrigo now seven-years-old and threeyear-old Carlota. ◆ Can you explain when and why you started breeding? Why you chose Spain for your breeding program? Isn’t it quite a chore to keep fields irrigated and to bring food from Belgium?

I rode when I was younger. I think I was 10-years-old when I started riding. Four years later I started with jumping competitions and it went quite well. But when I finished high school my parents obliged me to stop riding to attend university. I had to move to Madrid to study and stopped riding. However, at that time, I was riding a Belgian Warmblood Lys de Darmen mare, and I convinced my parents to use her for breeding while I was away at university. So everything began with that mare! Nothing good came out of her, but it was because I was only using local stallions. I remember that I went once to the national freejumping competition with a daughter of the Lys de Darnen mare. She was three years old, and it didn’t go so well. The result was not good. But at that moment I realized that I wanted to go for it! I decided that I needed better mares. I made contact with people from other countries. I wanted to see more things. I wanted to learn! I went to Holland to VDL because I was looking for some better mares to buy, but it was right at that moment, when I was looking at their stallions, that I realized that I also wanted to have approved stallions. My English was not so good in that time, but I was very clear in my mind about my goal. I wanted to breed top stallions, and the first decision was to find a way to get the right mares. Why in Spain? I am Spanish. I love my country. In Spain we have a good life. I like the weather and the mood of the people. Our place is 30 hectares and it is located in Talavera de la Reina – a small city of 80,000 people that is more or less 100 kilometres from Madrid and 80 kilometres from Toledo. Many people always asked me if in Spain it is possible to breed for the weather and I always give the same answer: Go to my place and look at my horses. If they could speak I am sure they would say that they prefer to live in Spain. At my place they are out in the field the whole year. We have good grass year-round, even in summer, because I can water every day. I can control how much water I use in the fields so I can determine how the grass is growing. And when the weather

is hot the mares and foals can decide if they want to go under the shade of a roof we have in every field, but you’d be surprised to see that they prefer to stay in the sun eating grass. We have very good accommodation with everything we need to breed and also to train the stallions for the approvals and sport. ◆ Everybody who looks at your breeding program understands that you have a passion for Holsteiner bloodlines. But why? What makes a Holsteiner so special? Does the Holsteiner still attract you as much as it did 10 years ago? Once I decided to try to get the best possible mares for my project, I had to think about how to make it happen. Spain is not a breeding country of jumping horses and at that time my English was not so good. I contacted a Spanish agent of the Holsteiner Verband and we organized my first trip to Holstein. That was the moment I met stallions like Corrado I, Cassini I, Caretino.... I remember that I also went to see Contender. When I stood in front of the boxes of stallions like Corrado I or Cassini I, I started to dream. I had a very clear idea that I wanted to breed stallions like that. And why not maybe a stallion of mine could be in those boxes one day. Why was I more focused on Holstein? If we speak about football for example, I think that in recent years when young children start to feel passion for football, they look at Messi or Ronaldo, they became supporters of Real Madrid or Barcelona. Maybe that was what happened to me with stallions like Cassini, Corrado, Carthago! Or even their sons, Cumano or Berlin. My big passion for breeding started when those big grey stallions were really at the top. ◆ With how many different marelines do you breed and why did you choose for these marelines? We have 30 breeding mares right now and use several mare lines. We have mares out of the direct motherline of Corrado, Cassini, Berlin, Capitol, Quinar, etc., but also from outside Holstein like the motherline of Qerly Chin or the full sister of Romanov. We wanted to have mares out of the best marelines to breed. But we did not want to just have a good paper. The most important thing was to have a good mare to breed, but she had to come from the best marelines. It took time and it was not easy, but in the end we got together a good group of mares. Everybody can breed with the best stallions in the world, but what makes the real difference is to do it with the right mares. September 2018

19

◆ What are you looking for in a mare? How important is performance for you? Should a mare have competed herself? I believe in the marelines. In breeding there is no guarantee but I believe you have more chances when you start with a good motherline. But a good motherline is not enough if the mare is not good, so you need a ‘good’ mare out of a ‘good’ motherline. I have mares that have been in the big sport like Estia (Caretino - Vardana x Fernando, Stamm 890, bred by Josef Unkelbach, or Orage (Dominard - Kristin x Rex Magna xx, bred by J. Cornelissen) that won a World Cup, but I don’t need that they had been in the sport. I want that they have have good conformation, movement and quality in free jumping. But for me one important thing is to have mares with charisma. If you have a look at my mares you can see that they all have charisma and that is something they often transmit. In my opinion, when you try to breed special stallions you can’t forget about the charisma. Probably that is the first thing you will notice in the stallion when he comes into the ring during the approval. In some approvals you see very beautiful stallions with blood and charisma, but very often those stallions have insufficient jumping power. If I want to breed complete stallions, I need elegant mares with blood and charisma to be able to use the most powerful stallions that are sometimes missing that charisma. ◆ Can you explain to BN readers about your success so far? In the last 10 years since we started to breed more seriously, we have bred many approved stallions in different studbooks like Holstein, BWP, Zangersheide and KWPN. It is still a little bit early to see those horses in international sport. From the first ones we bred we’ve had horses qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio, like Blinky Bill (2007: ex Burchess C

Yeguada Campos mares enjoying Spains 20 September 2018

Z, Caspar - Urcess x Heartbreaker) with Denis Lynch and Julia Hargreaves, and Daisy Farish with Great White (Cumano x Julio Mariner) who has very recently become the North American young rider champion. But we have other horses in international competitions like for example Inar C (Quidam de Revel - Operette x Candillo) with Nick Vrins and Rachel Steffen, Jigaro C (2009: Figaro de la Vie - Urcess x Heartbreaker) with Rodrigo Pessoa (originally – now with French rider Mathilde Lockwood), or Cumthago (Cumano My Girl III x La Zarras) with Nick Vrins. ◆ In the 2018 Breeding News Stallion Directory you have 20 approved stallions listed and six of them are shared with Erik Laenen. Can you tell me about this partnership? How did it start and develop? Eva’s family bred and owned Cicero, and she was managing the career of this stallion until she came to live i Spain. At that time Cicero was in the stable of Erik Laenen and that was how I met him. I saw a good stable and a good system to develop the career of the young stallions. Erik has a lot of experience in bringing young stallions to the top level, so I quickly realized that he was a perfect partner for me. We have now been working for 10 years together and have never had a problem. We are always on the same page. We want to reach the top and that will only happen when we work with the best quality. We have already had a lot of success in approvals and stallion competitions. We have a close relationship and I know he treats my stallions as though they were his own, so I can relax even if I can’t see them every day. In past years I have had several stallions at Erik Laenen’s place. On their website you can see Clarence, but he is not there as he always stays at home with me. He is my special friend and I like to keep him close by. I spend a lot of time with him as he is a special stallion. I know I’m losing money by having him in Spain, but with horses not everything can be about money. I enjoy having him here, and he still covers his mares from Spain. We send fresh or frozen semen when it’s needed. Even being based in Spain, which is not easy for his coverings, Clarence already has approved stallions with Holstein, BWP and Zangersheide. And also Grand Prix horses from his first covering years, so I am very happy with his offspring. Clarence gave a lot of charisma to my mares. For example, Estia is a top mare but I always thought that she could have had more sunshine charisma. I covered her with

Clarence and I had Clarestia, who is a very beautiful, elegant mare full of charisma. And the combination worked because the first two sons of Clarestia were Cobolensky and Mont Blanc, both approved for Holstein and BWP. At Erik’s place I now have three sons of Clarence approved in BWP: Nero C (Clarence x Heartbreaker – a full sister of Romanov) who looks a lot like Heartbreaker but with a black coat; Nirvana C (Clarence - Cinderella x Cicero – whose dam jumped Grand Prix with Abdel Said); and Obama C (Clarence x Cassini – a full sister to Quantum. ◆ What is your opinion about how breeding is developing? About the use of the popular stallions? About the number of auctions? About new techniques in breeding (ICSI)? I see that, in general, it’s more difficult for young stallions to breed. Breeders prefer to use popular stallions, and I can understand that it is more easy to sell the foals, but we can make the mistake to breed only on paper. At the end the goal should be to breed the best possible foal and, depending on your mare you should choose the right stallion, even if he is not popular. But I understand that it is not that simple, more so when there’s the need to sell the foals. I often see very ‘norma’ foals with good pedigrees and, in my opinion, that’s because we sometimes think more in terms of the pedigree than in the right combination. There are more and more auctions every year. Some people don’t have the connections to look for the horse they need and the auctions give them the possibility to buy, even if they don’t know many people. They see the publicity on internet and try to get the horse they want. But I’m not involved with any auctions and don’t really know how they work. About the new techniques in breeding, I find them very interesting when you can get foals from mares who are not able to become pregnant in the normal way. But many stallion owners are getting scared of sending frozen semen to breeders in case they try to get more foals using the new breeding techniques. I think it is rather expensive at the moment, and the results are not always good. I suppose in a few years it will become cheaper and the results will improve. Then the question will be whether we need foals by stallions who have been popular in the past, because that’s what most people are using ICSI for, or should be try to give better breeding chances to the new generations of stallions. We can’t forget that times are changing. The horses we need now are not like the horses that we needed 20 years ago. Sport has changed a lot, and it will change even more with new rules such as the boots on the hind legs, so we need to think about the horses that riders will need in the future when we plan our breeding program.

Eduardo Campos and Eva van Eeckhoudt (holding Carlota) alongside their Holstein-approved stallion Crack (Cornet Obolensky) If you start breeding, for me the most important is to start with a good mare. I would prefer to buy one good mare than three ‘normal’ mares with the same amount of money. I think it is very important to start with a good motherline, but we can’t forget that we need a good mare and not just a good paper. I like horses with blood and I like foals with charisma. As a breeder my goal has to be that when you see my foal you want to buy him. When you see my stallion, you want to use him for your mare. So we need to breed eye-catchers we need charisma. For that reason all my mares have charisma. And with that kind of mare you don’t have to be scared to breed with a powerful stallion who can very often be lacking charisma, because that will come from the mare. I would advise anyone to be very hard in their selection to breed only with the best mares. Of course you can make mistakes, but breeding is so expensive that you can only get your investment back when you only breed with the best. It was an honor to do an interview with Eduardo Campos who is very passionate about horses. The following quote says a lot about who he is as a person and breeder: “We have a lot of respect for our horses. Even more when they become older we like to take good care of them. I think you need to respect horses if you want them to give you something back. I am not a dealer, I feel more as a breeder and I love horses. It is our passion. I just enjoy spending time with them in the field. At our place our horses are relaxed because they know they can enjoy their days in peace. I respect them and they respect me.” ■

First stallion selection for Holsteiner approvals

BY ADRIANA VAN

TILBURG

PHOTOGRAPHY: PRIVATE COLLECTION

It is almost that time of the year again that the stallion approvals start. In Germany it means that the first selection will also start from several Studbooks. The numbers for the presented stallions are going down since a few years and the main reason for that is that the amount of foal being born has dropped also.

The number of foals born in 2015: 2,764. The bloodlines are also changing. Let’s take a look at a few past years of the first selection of the Holsteiner stallion approvals. The number of approved stallions listed in Holsteiner were 276 in 2012 (although some are missing from this list); 250 in 2015, while in 2018 we are down to 2003.

Casall’s popularity continues There is one stallion who has already been ‘pulling the cart’ for a number of years already: Casall (Caretino - Kira XVII x Lavall I, Stamm 890, bred by Wilfried Thomann). Casall had a more-than-proven career in sport under the saddle of Rolf-Göran Bengtsson and quite a few of his offspring are following in his footsteps. His daughter Cita (Casall - Pik Pauline x Pik Ramiro, bred by Anja Steen) currently appears in the WBFSH-ROLEX jumping ranking in 14th place under the saddle of Irishman Daniel Coyle. In 2012, 22 direct Casall offspring were presented at the first selection, plus eight grandsons via his son Connor (out of Korrada S x Cor de la Bryere, Stamm 6879, bred by Eduard Struve). In that same year Connor had two sons approved: Coventry (out of Picante I x Contender, Stamm 8769, bred by Hobe Magens) and Contento (out of Ocora x Corrado I, Stamm 8750, bred by Herbert Blöcker). Casall himself also had two sons approved: Cascadello II (out of Viviana x Clearway, Stamm 4847, bred by Detlef Hennings) and Clarcon (out of Tassina x Cassini I, Stamm 3692, bred by Avora Pferde GmbH & CO.KG). In 2015 Casall had 12 direct offspring and many grandsons via his sons: five by Casalito (out of Lalique II x Landgraf I, Stamm 18A2, bred by Josef Unkelbach), 12 by Cascadello I, two by Cascor (out of Pandora IX x Coronado, Stamm 776, bred by Wim Vissers), two by Casquetto (out of Nienburg III x Concerto II, Stamm 730B, bred by Jens Ritters) and 14 by Connor. From these numbers, Casall has two approved sons: Casalito II and Central Park (out of Upstream x Contender, Stamm 318D2, bred by Lothar Steuer). Casalito had one approved son: Casello (out of NCaretana BB x Caretino, Stamm 104A, bred by Manfred Birchler), while Cascadello I had three sons approved:

22 September 2018

Campodello (out of Ballerina X x Diarado, Stamm 776, bred by Michael Obieray), Charleston (out of Kantu x Cantus, Stamm 7126, bred by Heiko Büttner) and Cantesini (out of Ultra IV x Cassini I, Stamm 890, bred by Reimer Detlef Hennings). Finally, Casquetto had one son approved: Cruseon out of Urania XVIII x Cassini I, Stamm 741, bred by Witt Pferdezucht GbR). At this year’s first selection, we saw 21 Casall sons, plus grandsons via Cas Hope with one (out of Annabella x Lord Z, Stamm 425, bred by Detlef Hennings); Casalido, also one (out of Kyara x Calido I, Stamm 7126, bred by Peter Nagel Tornau); and Casaltino (Casall – Palida x Carthago, Stamm

Diamant de Semilly during his competition days, in the hands of Eric Levallois (FRA)

5064, bred by Manfred von Allwörden) with six. Additionally, Cascadello I and II were representedby nine sons, plus one each by Clarcon and Connor. These numbers show that Casall (or his sons) are still in great demand and very popular with breeders and horse owners alike.

A shift to new blood It was also very interesting to observe that the Holsteiner bloodlines are becoming more and more mixed with ‘outside blood’. For a long time, the Holsteiner Studbook has been very strict about using stallions who carried no Holsteiner bloodlines. Then, it was mainly Selle Français and Thoroughbred stallions that were deemed acceptable by virtue of their success in crossing with Holsteiner mares – even though they were not necessarily all the right match. However, when I look at the 2012 list, I see that 197 stallions are coming from the two ‘C’ lines: Cor de la Bryère (Rantzau xx - Quenotte x Lurioso, bred by Therese Essayan) and Capitol (Capitano - Folia x Maximus, Stamm 173, bred by Harm Thormählen). These are the two most widely spread bloodlines in Holsteiner breeding. Meanwhile, there are 28 stallions descending from the Almé (Ibrahim Girondine x Ultimate xx, bred by Alphone Chauvin) line, and 18 from the line of Ladykiller xx (Sailing Light xx - Lone Beech xx x Loaningdale xx, bred by Mrs. A.L. Adda). One of the relatively new lines in Holstein is that of Diamant de Semilly (Le Tot de Semilly - Venise des Cresles x Elf III, bred by Jules Mesnildrey). His breakthrough in Holstein came in 2007, when his son Diarado (out of Roxette I x Corrado I, Stamm 318D2, bred by Klaus Kristensen Tingholm) became champion. In 2012 there were three direct Diamant de Semilly’s and nine by Diarado – from whom two were approved in 2012: Dinken (out of Inken I x Cassini I, Stamm 2294, bred by Theo Molenaers) and Diamaro (out of Raspberryhill x Candillo, Stamm 6082, bred by Dr. Peter Rosbach). In

2018 there are five direct sons of Diamant de Semilly, 10 by Diarado, six by Dinken, and one by Dio Cabrio (Diarado - Virginia IV x Caretino, Stamm 8763, bred by Dr. Hauke Goldschmidt) In 2012 the collection of the first selection was what we might call more traditional, with mostly Holsteiner sires. If we look now to the list of 2018 we can see the influence of Cornet Obolensky/ex Windows van’t Costersveld (Clinton - Rabanna van Costersveld x Heartbreaker, bred by Thierry Degraeve), a BWP-bred stallion who has already lifted Westfalian breeding to a new level. Ten direct offspring of Cornet Obolensky are on the 2018 list for the first selection. The KWPN bred stallion Kannan (Voltaire - Cemeta x Nimmerdor, bred by M.G. Kramer-van de Meer), worked very well in France and is now finding his way into Holstein as well, with seven offspring on the 2018 list. Last but not least, Vagabond de la Pomme (Vigo d’Arsouilles - Sauterelle de la Pomme STX x For Pleasure, bred by Haras de la Pomme) an sBs-bred stallion who is standing in France but whose eldest offspring were born in Belgium. Vagabond has nine offspring on the list for the first Holsteiner selection. These stallions, Diamant de Semilly, Cornet Obolensky, Kannan and Vagabond de la Pomme, all had outstanding sporting careers and have proven themselves with their offspring. All of these stallions are based in France with the exception of Cornet Obolensky. The free market of stallion semen is changing the bloodlines in every studbook, so it will be interesting to see how other German studbooks are being influenced by ‘foreign’ bloodlines. Certainly, BWP, KWPN, sBs and Zangersheide have already been mixing their bloodlines for decades, and with great success. How does the Selle Français look? It will be interesting to follow these breeding innovations during the forthcoming selection season. ■

FeI-WBFSH – World Breeding Championship – ermelo Severo Jurardo Lopez (eSp) riding 2018 6yo champion D’Avie

A powerhouse of dancing ballerinas and rock stars

BY

Ermelo, the Netherlands is the place to be if you want to get a closer look at the best young dressage horses in the world and to see which breeds and bloodlines are the most favorable and the most successful at the moment. Riders, breeders, dressage fans – they all gather around the dressage arena in Ermelo to watch the moves, gaits and performances of the best horses in fivesix- and seven-year-old tests.

S

o, who conquered Ermelo this year, who will return in 2019, bringing another year of training and experience under their girth?

The youngest age group: 5yo When Andreas Helgstrand and his magnificent grey Westfalian stallion Revolution (Rocky Lee x Rouletto) finished their victorious presentation in the five-year-old test, the whole audience momentarily lapsed into silence, then spontaneously rewarded the couple with a standing ovation. The jury was also impressed with the performance awarding them a 9.62 total: 9.80 for trot, 9.00 for walk, 10.00 for extremely powerful, balanced and uphill canter, 9.30 for submission and 10.00 for future prospect. One member of the jury, Maria Colliander, complemented the stallion by calling him “a true rock star and a real powerhouse”. Revolution was bred by Yesemin Yanik and is jointly owned by Hanni Kasprzak and Helgstrand Dressage. According to Andreas Helgstrand: “This one is special to me He has such a nice character, it is out of this world. I previously owned the triple world champion Sezuan when he was the same as Revolution right now, but I think Revolution is even more complete.” He continued by adding; “This year the show is of a very high level. The breeding is moving up, the judging is better and we are looking here at the horses that will be more complete in the future.” The runner up was a Hannoverian stallion Destacado (Desperados x Londonderry) presented by Matthias Alexander Rath. He received 10.00 for his fantastic walk, that was both energetic and relaxed, for an overall total of 9.48. His walk was so ideal that the judges’ presenter, Mariette Sanders, said; “If it were possible, I would have given him 11 for the walk.” His canter was rewarded with 9.40, trot with 8.90, and 9.70 for prospects. The bronze medal went to the very elegant mare, Candy OLD (Sir Donnerhall x Fürst Heinrich) and Eva Möller, with a total score of 9.38. The mare may not have the power of the stallions, yet all her gaits were very rhythmical, energetic and light-footed. “A beautiful, charismatic ballerina” as judge Colliander described her, after receiving 9.70 for prospects and 9.40 for submission, trot 9.80, walk 8.80 and 9.40 for canter.

The horse was bred by Paul Wendeln and is owned by Hilde and Paul Wendeln. Eva Möller was extremely happy with their performance: “Candy is a sensitive horse, but all good horses are. I have been riding her since February and it took some time to get to know her.” In face, Möller did the great job preparing the horse for the show and taking over the ride from Helen Langehanenberg who’d just given birth to her second child. When asked about the other medallists Andreas Helgstrand underlined that he’d seen Candy and Eva three months earlier and today was truly impressed with the progress they’d made. Another horse that also made an impression on the audience and the jury finished fifth in the test – the beautiful and dynamic chestnut Selle Français gelding Dorian Grey de Hus (Don Juan de Hus x Sandro Hit) presented by the French rider Jessica Michel Botton and owned by SARL Haras de Hus. The high score of 9.40 for prospects is positive indicator for the future of French dressage breeding – especially given the successful six-year-old result for another Don Juan son.

Three-time Ermelo winner claims the 6yo prize Spain’s Severo Jurado Lopez and his Hannoverian stallion D’Avie (Don Juan de Hus x Londonderry) delivered a stunning test and were awarded a total of 9.26 points. The trot, in particular, was appraised by the judges with the score of 9.80, while his walk scored 8.00. However, it was his dynamic uphill canter with exceptional expression and the ability to collect that was rewarded with the ultimate 10.00, plus 9.00 for submission and 9.50 for prospects. This superb horse and another offspring of Don Juan de Hus was bred by Dorothee Heitmüller. Lopez was extremely grateful to his horse, saying; “ I have to thank him for this medal. He was good the first day, but today could not have gone better. I hope I can continue to ride him and that we can come back here next year.” Bred by Edeltraud Hähn and ridden by Germany’s Laura Strobel, the Rhineland-bred Villeneuve (Vitalis x Dancier) took home the silver medal with a total score of 9.24 points. Judge Isobel Wessels especially liked the trot: “It has a lot of rhythm and expression and continued to improve during the test. In the collection he stays nicely uphill, which gave him a September 2018

score of 9.40.” Bronze went to the KWPN stallion Hermès (Easy Game x Flemmingh) under the saddle of Dinja van Liere with the total of 8.78. The stallion was bred by G. Gijsbergs and was described by the judges as “an amazing horse, work-willing, with elasticity and self-carriage, all the qualities that are very important in this sport.”

Three stallions claim the 7yo medals All the medalists in the seven-year-old test were stallions, with gold and silver going to KWPN with Glamourdale and Governor, with the leader of the intermediate rankings, Fürsten-Look finishing third. Judge Susanne Baarup commented on the seven-year-old test by saying; “The quality was really high. You gave us goose bumps today. Congratulations to the breeders. The horses we saw today are amazing and easy to go for Grand Prix. I have no doubt about it.” Glamourdale (Lord Leatherdale x Negro) was extremely well presented in the final test by British rider Charlotte Fry. The trot was very powerful and with great impulsion that was valued at 9.80. The lowest mark (7.60) was awarded for his walk, while canter received a 10.00, 9.40 for submission and 9.50 for prospects. Fry herself was completely overwhelmed

with the result. “I have never experienced something quite like this. It’s just like flying, you’re not touching the floor. I am so thankful that I get to ride such a good horse.” Certainly, the Joop Rodenburg-bred stallion belonging to Van Olst Horses has a great future ahead of him. Silver went to Adelinde Cornelissen and KWPN stallion Governor (Totilas x Jazz), bred by J.B.J.M. Streppel. He received 9.00 for his powerful and elastic trot, 8.50 for walk, and 9.00 for canter. He was awarded the highest marks for submission and prospects (9.50). Governor is the son of the full sister to Cornelissen’s former top horse, Paraival, so she is naturally very enthusiastic about this stallion, owned by G.A.M. Korbeld. “He is out of Perzival’s full sister. He is so beautiful and there is nothing he can’t do. All the things that make him the complete athlete. I am grateful to the owners that they let me ride such a wonderful horse. Also credit to the breeders, without them we would be just nowhere.” Despite having scored the best result on the first day, the Hannoverian Fürsten-Look (Fürstenball x Londonderry) finished in third place due to a costly mistake in the last line. The jury, however, praised his powerfully elastic and lightfooted trot, the lovely use of his body to produce a spacious and relaxed walk, as well as his ability to collect in canter.

Glamourdale (Lord Leatherdale x Negro), winner of the 7yo age-group, who was extremely well presented by Great Britain’s Charlotte Fry on behalf of owner, Gert Jan Van Olst. 26 September 2018

Stallion of the year Victory in the Freestyle to Music for the ‘stallion of the year’ show was claimed by the Hanoverian Lord Django (Stalypso x Londonderry) and the first ever Polish rider to win in Ermelo – Ilona Janas (74.166%). Janas was certainly excited about the performance of her stallion, bred by Hermann Heeren. “Lord Django loves the audience – he loves the applause, he’s a very smart and brave horse. He’s also curious which demands that his rider stay focused and calm, as all great horses are.” When asked which horse she liked the best in Ermelo other than her own, Janas replied without hesitation; “D’Avie. I really love watching this horse and would love to ride him too.” Interestingly, D’Avie dam’s sire was the same famous Hannoverian Londonderry who also appeared in the bloodline of the five-year-old runner up, Destacado, as well as the seven-year-old bronze medallist, Fürsten-Look. D’Avie’s sire, meanwhile, is the stunning Don Juan de Hus, who also sired the best Selle Français in the event, Dorian de Hus. The KWPN studbook presented the largest volume of horses (31), including The Hanoverian Lord Django (Stalypso x Londonderry) and the first ever the seven-year-old winner and bloodlines Polish rider to win in Ermelo – Ilona Janas of such acclaimed stallions as Totilas, Jazz and Flemmingh. The Hanoverian studbook was second with approved stallion Numberto (Negro - Jasmijn x Ahorn), 17 horses. bred by Joop Rodenburg, too. Numberto was shown in The Westfallian studbook can also claim a major victory Grand Prix by Spencer Wilton. I’m quite sure that in Ermelo with the ‘king of canter Revolution-ary’ Glamourdale’s body contains everything he needs to performance! Altogether, 180 horses entered the arenas become a Grand Prix horse – and a pretty good one at that! with 19 studbooks represented at this year’s dressage World For me his abilities are above andbeyond. This year in Ermelo, Van Olst’s stable rider, Charlotte Fry, showed Glamourdale to his Glamourdale post script utmost, and was so happy that she could hardly believe she’d won: “It’s almost like Glamoudale felt the importance of the Gert-Jan van Olst saw Glamourdale, who was bred by the show. He gives its best and still there is a little more, it’s late Joop Rodenburg, as a four-day-old colt and knew he had amazing. “Quality of Z-Festival foals improving each year...”

BY

JO DE ROO

From July 26 to 29, the Zangersheide Festival took place. Despite the extremely hot temperatures in Belgium, more than 450 foals participated in the foal championship. They were divided in six groups and, afterwards, we Luc Tilleman, one of the members of the jury who said, “In general, the quality of Z-Festival foals is improving each year. We noticed that the presented foals belong to outstanding dam lines...”

We also noticed that some stallions ‘handed out’ their business card during this Z-Festival, such as Asca Z, Comilfo Plus Z and Toulon. Those stallions were represented in several finals and, generally speaking, we saw a very good offspring from them.” Can the quality still improve? “Yes, if the breeders keep on working in the way they are doing – by using their very best dams that belong to strong performance families and by crossing them with good stallions. For example, Halifax is a young stallion, he is eleven-years-old. It’s important that young stallions get chances and that they can cover the best dams. Breeders should always try to improve. We, as stallion keepers with good stallions, need breeders with good dams. And viceversa, the breeders with good dams cannot realize their breeding aim if we don’t have good stallions. We have to help each other, in order to become stronger and better.” Tilleman’s comments about the winners of the six groups were important to note: Capraline Champion Z (Catoki - Apraline x Landor S), bred by T. De Boer, won the A group of the fillies: “A very beautiful, correctly built filly with many blood. She has an interesting pedigree. She has a nice conformation and demonstrated elegant movements.”

by winning this group. She is both beautiful and has a interesting pedigree.” In group B of the colts, Tsaar Blue VH Beeckhof Z was laurelled as the winner. He is a son of progenitor Toulon, out of It’s A Blue (Blue Boy). He was bred by Patrick and Romy Vandereyt, and according to Tilleman: “He was an eye catcher. He really has the conformation of a stallion, with a lot of expression. He stands over a lot of ground and, in terms of type, he has a real stallion look.” Dolce Vita vd Holstenhoeve Z (Dominator 2000 Z - Evita x Latano I) won the C group for fillies. Bred by Heidi Suls, Tilleman said: “A very complete foal with good movements, very nice conformation and born out of an outstanding dam line. The dam jumped successfully at 1m50 level. Thanks to this full package, it was easy to give Dolce Vita the highest points.” Finally, Dalido BV Z was crowned as the winner of the colts’ C group. He is a son of Diamant de Semilly out of Calida Z (Casper Z), bred by Wim Brans and Elisa Vanmuysen. “Dalido was one of the best moving foals of the Z-Festival. He moved brilliantly. His canter and trot were outstanding. He is built like a stallion and, in terms of his future, he has the qualities to be presented at a stallion expertise. He deserved to win this group,” Tilleman concluded.

Heartbreaker’s signature Cornet Obolensky’s influence Hocus Pocus S Z claimed victory in the A group for colts. He was bred by Nico Schulpen who crossed the Comme Il Faut daughter, Comme Ci Comme Ca S Z, with Halifax van het Kluizebos. According to Tilleman: “Hocus Pocus is a beautiful bay son by Halifax with very good movements. A sport type with much blood. He has a rectangular conformation and is a very promising colt. In Hocus Pocus we can recognize the signature of Heartbreaker. He is very beautiful and bred in a interesting way with Halifax and Comme Il Faut, two stallions that are performing at the highest level.” B-group fillies winner was Athena DB Z (Asca Z - Socca Fontanel x Calvaro Z), bred by the Goen family. “In her movements we saw much lightness. She is born out of a very good dam line and, from the very first moment she entered the arena, she showed that she was a candidate who could claim victory. In the final she convinced us for a second time

28 September 2018

Some people are supporters of Cornet Obolensky (exWindows van het Costersveld), some are not! However, he does have influence, which was exercised during this foal championship. The organisers divided the foals into six different groups, presented over three days. Having analyzed the pedigrees and watched recordings of the top 10 – plus other who completed the top 78, 11 are sired by Cornet Obolensky. Although not every dam was a good match for him, his offspring could be round throughout the championship ranking and all 11 received high points according to different criteria, even those lower down the list. Cornet Obolensky stamps his offspring not only as a sire, but also via his son Comme Il Faut and his grandson Comilfo Plus Z, respectively third (with four descendants) and second (seven descendants) in our top 78. Comilfo Plus Z’s offspring

especially impressed us in a very positive way. A son of Comme Il Faut, he is out of a daughter of Balou du Rouet, and we saw modern built, noble foals standing over a lot of ground and showing great lightness in their movements. His foals could also accelerate in an easy way. At the ages of six and seven, Comilfo Plus Z was a finalist in the showjumping World Breeding Championship for Young Horses in Lanaken. Last year, at the age of eight, he competed in a few five-star showjumping classes in partnership with Christian Ahlmann. Besides Cornet Obolensky and his two sons, a few other stallions were represented in our top 78, with three or more descendants: Asca Z (four), Cicero van Paemel Z (four), Levisto Z (four) and Chacoon Blue (three). In our same top 78 we counted five stallions that were each mentioned three times as a dam’s sire: Carthago, Cornet Obolensky, Heartbreaker, Kashmir van ’t Schuttershof and Nabab de Rêve.

out of Java Touch Hero. Java is a daughter of Calvaro out of China Touch Hero. As another example: Hiamant van’t Roosakker, bred by Marc Kluskens, was produced by crossing the Darco daughter Atoucha van’t Roosakker with Diamant de Semilly. Hiamant produced for instance Kerswin van’t Roosakker, the 2015 world champion of the fiveyear-old horses in Lanaken. Cleopatra Hero Z (breeder: Luc Henry), a daughter of Cornet Obolensky out of Hiamant, ended ex aequo 17th in the fillies A group, whereas Cleopatra’s full brother, Corvette vd Berghoeve Z, ranked second in the colt’s B group. Vadebo NV bred Corvette, as well as runner-up in the B group for fillies – Levine vd Berghoeve Z (Levisto Z) – belonging to the same dam line of the international showjumper Jeunesse (ridden by Yves Vanderhasselt).

Proven dam lines

In our list of remarkable dam lines, we also have to mention Monica, a daughter of Rebel I Z. Monica is the grandmother of Hardrock Z and the great-grandmother of Tabou Z, Corico Z, Crowntano Z, Candico Z and Zaza Z. Monica underlined her breeding value during the Z-Festival, as grandmother of Champteloup JT Z (fourth in the A group for colts), and as greatgrandmother of Triple Crown JT Z and Coronation JT Z, respectively fourth and ex aequo seventh in the A group for fillies. Last but not least, we should mention Carthana di Magico Z, a full sister to Carthina Z. Carthina produced many international showjumpers, including Diamanthina and Emerald van’t Ruytershof, Fragile, Ilusionata and Nixon van’t Meulenhof. Carthana di Magico Z is the grandmother of the Levisto Z son Leopold van het Meesenhof Z (ex aequo eighth in the C group for colts), as well as the grandmother of Copycat Z son, Carthino PS Z (ex aequo eighth in the colts’ A group), respectively bred by Joachim Meesens and Peter Simons. ■

The dam line of each foal was also evaluated (20%), which reaps a two-fold advantage. A foal with lower points in the ‘correctness, ‘movements’, conformation’ and ‘general impression’ criteria could climb in the ranking if it received high points for ‘dam line’. Conversely, foals with high points in the four former criteria, could lose 10 or more ranking places due to low points for their dam line. In the dam lines of our top 78, a few certainly underlined their qualities, including China Touch Hero. This daughter of Chin Chin produced several international showjumpers (such as Jaguar de Tiji, Esprit de la Roque, and Sea Coast Don’t Touch Tiji Hero), as well as approved stallions (including Akarad Hero Z, Best Friend Hero Z, and Don’t Touch Tiji Hero). A L’Aise de Betze Z, a foal by Asca Z out of China Touch Hero, ranked third in A group for fillies, and was bred by De Betze. In the same group Kenya Touch Hero Z was ranked ex aequo seventh. Kenya Touch Hero Z (bred by Luc Henry) is a daughter of Kassander van’t Roosakker

Ireland’s Suma Stud: A four-decade success story

SUSAN FINNERTY PHOTOGRAPHY: FEI AND SPORTSFILE FOR HORSE SPORT IRELAND

BY

Some 40 years in the making – that’s how you could describe the background story of Suma’s Zorro (Ard VDL Douglas - Vixen’s Frolic x Horos – bred by Susie Lanigan-O’Keeffe). The 14year-old mare is on the crest of a wave with a recent string of wins with her Egyptian partowner, Sameh El Dahan.

S

uma Stud is synonymous with its founders Susie LaniganO’Keeffe and Marily Power, (the stud’s distinctive prefix is an amalgamation of their first names) who founded their stud back in 1978. Based in Co Meath for many years, Co Kilkenny in south-east Ireland is now the couple’s home, and although they have semi-retired from the horse breeding business, they have left an indelible mark on the Irish sport horse world. So much so that they were presented with the Outstanding Contribution to Sport Horse Breeding award at the Horse Sport Ireland breeders awards in 2015. And now the Global Champions Tour success of Suma’s Zorro this summer, with a win in Cannes, followed up by another Grand Prix win in the Paris leg of the series, plus placings at Chantilly and Valkenswaard, has catapulted her breeders back into the spotlight. Being an Irish story, there is of course a degree of what Marily describes as “A combination of planning and pure fairytale” in Zorro’s back story, as it traces back to their foundation mare, Royal Penny. She was an orphan foal, spotted beside her dead dam by some racegoers returning from the Curragh Races. Susie’s uncle, George Malcomson had just lost a Thoroughbred foal

that morning, so they brought the orphan filly home. She was said to be the result of an illicit liaison between a yearling colt, the property of the renowned Thoroughbred breeding operation Baroda Stud, and a Connemara mare! Royal Penny became one of the top showjumping ponies of her era and was near-unbeatable in the show ring too. A winner at the Royal Dublin Horse Show, she was sold to the UK, although fortunately, was bought back to start her breeding career as a 16-year-old. A prolific breeder, each of her foals looked like a virtual clone of its sire and, according to Marily, every one of them jumped, including Foxes Frolic (Blue Cliff xx - Royal Penny). Foxes Frolic outgrew his diminutive dam, finishing up at 165cms. He became the talking horse of his day and notched up numerous wins with Susie, including the Gold Cup at Balmoral Show in Belfast. Coincidentally, some 40 years later, this same showjumping class was won by his relation, Suma’s Zorro. Before this international horse, Susie was already an accomplished rider. As a youngster, she made and rode ponies to sell on for her parents Randal (Lanny) and Eileen (Dan) Malcomson, a well-known Connemara judge. She and her brother John were much sought-after ‘catch’ riders, often producing ponies for the wellknown Connemara breeder, Miss Frances Lee Norman. Susie also jumped clear around Burghley’s cross-country course, back in its long-format days, on the overheight Connemara mare, Sally Ann. The pony’s legendary boldness saw them enter Dublin Horse Show folklore after Susie bailed out and was left clinging to the awning above the spectator’s box after the pony jumped out of the main arena and disappeared, skipping over the spectator benches. “It’s alright Missus, she’s still swinging!” the British chef d’equipe, the late Louis Massarella, shouted at Dan! The part-pony could have been sold for the price of a large farm back then, but instead was often loaned to another Irish rider, Ned Cash Junior, for international duty. Another Royal Penny descendant bred by Susie is Vixen’s Frolic (Horos xx - Presently xx x Pride of Shaunlara). Interestingly, the American-bred Horos xx (Head of the River xx - Sound of Success xx x Successor I xx, bred by A.B Hancock III) was the resident Thoroughbred sire at Suma Stud. He won the Croker Cup, awarded to the champion Thoroughbred stallion at Dublin Horse Show in 1991 for his connections. Judging that year’s class was Sweden’s Bo Helander. (This once-iconic class in Horse Show Week was cancelled at the recent show for the third successive year, due to lack of entries). “We were thrilled to win the class as Horos was given 10/10 for type to produce a sport horse” Marily recalled, describing the Thoroughbred. “He was an outstanding mover coming from his shoulder and hind end, and had an excellent front leg. Lighter-bodied than some, he had raced for four seasons but only won two little races. He was a lovely ride, very mannerly and could canter a 10-metre circle. He has made an excellent broodmare sire, crossing particularly well with Puissance (Imperius xx - Lady Marlane x Diamonds Are Trumps, bred by James Whitty). “He was a natural choice for our Pride of Shaunlara mare Presently xx, who then gave us Vixen’s Frolic, the dam of Zorro.” Pride of Shaunlara (Milestone - Boston Burglar x by Prefairy xx, bred by John Hoolan) was a popular Irish Draught stallion that stood at Suma through the years. Marily and Susie were and are huge supporters of this native breed and foundation block of the Irish Sport Horse. Another resident Irish Draught was Crosstown Dancer (Flagmount Diamond - Tara Sky x Pride of Shaunlara, bred by Fintan Brannigan). His breeder sent Crosstown Dancer to Suma Stud as a three-year-old colt to begin his stud career. “At the time, a young lad, Damien McDermott, was breaking and riding our horses and he brought on the stallion extremely well. He gave us some marvellous days out as he was poetry in motion and ‘George’ qualified to go to the WBFSH championships in Lanaken, where he reached the final as a five-year-old.” How their crusade to promote Irish Draught lines originally began was when Marily was struggling to find a suitable stallion to cover her 15/16ths Thoroughbred mare Donna Isla, that had competed at Area International Trial level in the UK with Marily. “I didn't like the Irish Draught stallions I saw, so I used Frances Lee Norman’s lovely bay stallion Clonkeehan Nimbus. We got two smashers like that ,but I wanted to find a better Draught. “At the same time Susie, whom I had met on my return here to Ireland, was finding novice jumping very boring and was wondering where all the nice horses had gone. So we joined up to go and see where the good ones were and bought a couple.”

This was back in the 1970s when tractors continued to replace Draught mares on Irish farms at lightning speed and they found themselves receiving daily phonecalls, “With someone wanting to sell us a mare. Off to the factory otherwise.” Pride of Shaunlara was sourced in Co Cork and his owners have often declared that buying him changed their lives. “If we had not found him, we would never have been so involved with Irish Draughts or developed our stud the way it has.” Later sent to Tom Hutchinson to produce, the stallion sailed over six-foot fences in training. Paul Darragh had offered to buy him on the spot having seen him jump, but an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease saw shows and Pride of Shaunlara’s competition career grind to a halt. “Meath was not the ideal place to stand an Irish Draught, as Thoroughbreds abound and people were also not sure whether two women could really do the stallion mens’ job, so mares were a mixed bag” recalls Marily, who found that once callers saw their Irish Draught arrival in the flesh, they were all won over by his quality and sheer presence. Vixen’s Frolic was loaned to Susie’s cousin, Stephen, “as we were flat out with the stallions. He broke her and bred her to Paris Lights (Alme Z - Urioso x Surioso). That daughter, named Coolmore Frolic, bred two good ones to Puissance; On A Frolic, jumped by Linda Moloney and Up Up And Away, the four-star event horse with Caroline Powell (NZ).” The move from the traditional to continental lines came about when Susie and Marily switched to using Warmblood stallions. “The first good one we bred was Suma’s Sound of Music (Indoctro - Distant Music x Horos xx). She won both the fiveand six-year-olds at the RDS (Royal Dublin Show) with Dave Quigley and was owned by friends of ours, the TJM Connollys from Crossmolina. She had a good career with several different riders after that, including internationals. “Vixen’s Frolic then came back to us ready to compete” continued Marily, “but sadly she broke a bone in a hind foot so went to stud. A beautiful, quality grey mare who was quite feisty, she bred two by VDL Arkansas (Acobat - Aziemieka x Silvano, breeder Wiepke van de Lageweg) who both did well. Suma’s Black Fox was selected to go to the WBFSH young event horse championships at Le Lion d’Angers and Suma’s Maybe jumped up to1m30 and is now breeding. “But her last foal, Zorro has proved what is always possible for a small breeder but very rarely happens. “Going to the VDL and Nijhof studs in Holland was an education. Fabulous movement and power. They pulled out all the stops to show us their stallions and then to trust us with a young one of their own which was VDL Arkansas,” recalled Marily about their first stallion investment. VDL Arkansas arrived in Ireland in January 2000. “Clem McMahon was chosen as the rider and did a super job, September 2018

Just some of the many former graduates include Kylemore Stud’s Olive Broderick, event rider Louise Codd, dressage rider Ivan Kelly, Connollys Red Mills representative Nia O’Malley and producer Catriona Shanley. “They were a hardworking, dedicated bunch. One nice thing that we really appreciated was that many of them came back to prepare and present our horses at our dispersal sale” Marily gratefully noted. “We planned it [the sale] carefully and wrote information with photos about all the stallions concerned,” she added. “We mixed up the age groups and instead put families together. Everything was sold with a complete veterinary certificate, Suma’s Zorro – ridden by Sameh El Dahan (EGY) either for soundness or pregnancy, and the

World equestrian Games 2018 – tryon, NC

BY

JEAN LLEWELLYN AND ADRIANA VAN TILBURG

Stockholm, Sweden, hosted the inaugural World Equestrian Games in 1990. This quadrennial event hosts the world championships in all the equestrian disciplines that come under the auspices of the International Equestrian Federation (FEI). Taking place the Tryon International Equestrian Center in North Carolina, WEG 2018 begins with an opening ceremony on the evening of Tuesday, September 11 and runs to Sunday, September 23.

T

he following list includes declared entries as at August 29. Some countries are missing because they have indicated that they will not be announcing their final team lists until after September 1. As usual, BN has focused on dressage, eventing and showjumping – the Olympic disciplines – although WEG encompasses other equestrian sports.

Competition stallions First though, it’s interesting to analyze the stallions that appear on the entry list, to date, and identify those that were presented and approved as young horses by their respective studbooks. (The bloodlines and breeder names for these horses appear in the respective entry lists.) From the 13 dressage-bred stallions, 11 were approved as two- or three-year-olds, one is not approved – Salvino/ex Sandronnerhall – while Indoctro van de Steenblok was approved at the age of nine by the Anglo European Studbook (AES). Given that the majority of stallions successfully negotiated the approval process, we will mention those studbooks with more than one reresentative: Two for the Hannoverian Verband – Damsey FRH and Delatio; three for Oldenburg – Mane Stream Belstaff, Cennin and Ramoneur 6. The KWPN also has three approved stallions: Blue Hors Zack, Glock's Dream Boy, and Apache. Jeannette Nijhof had the following to say: “It is very simple. With a

dressage stallion you can already see all the characteristics from a young age, like type, movement, health, character, etc. So you can select them already at a younger age.”

Jumping stallions Something very interesting occurs in the jumping list, as several stallions were approved much later in their lives, and two have never been approved. The latter two are Cassino DC and Royce. What could be a reason behind this? Jeannette Nijhof says: “You also have to select a jumping horse for it’s use and freejumping at two-and-a-half or three years of age doesn’t really provide the necessary information. You can select them much better under saddle at the age of three-and-a-half or four, or older under saddle. Then you have much more information. “For me the stallion approvals at a young age is a pre selection and to gather information regarding type, pedigree, correctness, health and free jumping. But the real selection only takes place when you see the horse’s usefulness, so under the saddle. What they can’t do themselves is something they can’t pass on.” If we take a look at the stallions that have been approved retroactively based on performance, Quabri de l’Isle was approved by Selle Français (his birth studbook), Oldenburg and Zangersheide in 2016. He has now become an extremely popular sire. H&M Chilli Willi was also approved in

2016, by AES. The first studbook of approval for VDL Glasgow van het Merelsnest NOP and Don VHP (who was also first approved as a coming four-year-old under saddle), was by the AES. Interestingly, these stallions are now being proudly touted by other studbooks. Both were selected based on sporting performance and are now in high demand. Joris van de Oetelaar, director of the AES says: “We will always keep approving young stallions, and because we are in very open minded about that, we are often the first to find future talents. Our approvals system is already very fitting with sport because of our gradual approval method. • Licensed: Young stallion – 30 mares; • Approved: Unlimited number of mares; • Older stallions (from the age of four): Status based on sporting results or presentation under saddle; • Elite: Stallions that are already performing at the highest level, with free registration of their offspring.” Based on the foregoing information and other research, it appears that 50% of the stallions were approved as two- or three-year-olds, and 50% were either approved as older stallions, or are not yet approved. Seemingly, owners with stallions bred for jumping are choosing not to send them to the approvals, but prefer to keep them at home and build them up for sporting careers, hoping they will later be approved based on their performance results. Blooming BWp elite foals at national championship

JO DE ROO PHOTOGRAPHY: JO DE ROO

BY

On August 25, the Belgian Warmblood Studbook organised the national championship for BWP ‘elite’ foals and BRp (ponies) foals, that had all been pre-selected during local championships. In showjumping, the organisers welcomed 85 colts and 89 fillies, plus 23 and 21, respectively, in dressage (plus 47 ponies).

M

ore and more breeders are presenting their foals at championships in Belgium, where associated auctions are also booming. Such events have become marketplaces that gather buyers and sellers in one place. It’s a good economic initiative, although one has to wonder how long such auctions will continue at the current rate of success. Naturally, the day when the number of sellers exceeds the buyers will mark the time when prices will drop, an indication to breeders to produce fewer foals, which will

mean fewer studbook registrations and less administrative income... and so on! Of course, I visited the event not as a seller or buyer, but to assess the qualities of the foals and to see which stallions are leaving their mark. By analyzing the sires of presented foals in the option showjumping, we see that Tangelo van de Zuuthoeve (Narcos II - Olympia van de Krekebeke x Laudanum xx, bred by René Vets) is leading the way with a total of 13 out of the 174 presented foals. Tangelo is followed by two sires with eight descendants apiece: the 17-year-old Untouchable (Hors La Loi II - Promesse x Heartbreaker), and the sixyear-old Matisse de Mariposa (Diamant de Semilly - Inabelle de Mariposa x Stakkato) – the latter bred by Herman de Brabander. The seven-year-old Lavallino ter Klomp (Clearway - Senorita x Coriano Z) had seven descendants; two five-year-olds – Amadeo van‘t Vossenhof Z (Asca Z - Bessemeind’s Caloma II Z x Carthago) and Nixon van‘t Meulenhof (Denzel van‘t Meulenhof Carthina Z x Carthago) each had six offsprig; followed by two stallions with five apiece: the four-year-old Ermitage Kalone (Catoki - Bellaventure Kalone x Kannan) alongside the 22-year-old Toulon (Heartbreaker - Nikita x Jokinal de Bornival). A wide range of ages, as you will see, for the most represented sires.

In the showjumping colts’ category, victory went to Sire Echo VH, bred by retired farmer Marc Van Hasselt. He bred this son of Echo van‘t Spieveld (Heartbreaker) out of Chellana Z (Chellano Z), saying: “This year, I will celebrate my 70th birthday, so I have been breeding for more than 50 years. Annually, I used to breed one or two foals. I have two children, but they are not riders, so Jeroen Geerts is

riding my young horses. Chellana Z was born in our stables and belongs to the bloodline of St-Anneke. At that time, Chellana didn’t perform in sport because we had so little time to train our horses. However, Sire Echo’s grandmother, Orthencya van Sint Anneke, performed at international level.” Stefaan De Smet, a member of the jury, declared: ‘He really impressed us. He is very noble. He has a very good canter and is correctly built. She also has a certain temperament, but she is So Beautiful vd Guldennagel (Casino Grande - Nambina very easy to handle,” Thijs concluded. vd Gulden-nagel x Canabis Z) won the showjumping fillies category, and we talked to her breeder, Stijn Thijs, who Unfortunate timing conflict annually breed around eight foals. “I am very happy and proud. In the final of the female dressage foals the top five were very competitive, all very well matched. But because her first foal, Riet, had such good qualities, we decided to use her exclusively as a broodmare. It was a good decision as this year she gave us So Beautiful. Nambina is now in foal to Casino Grande’s sire, Casino Berlin. Nambina is a good broodmare whose half brothers and sisters are doing very well in sport: Hotcha van‘t Rozendael, Iliaz vd Guldennagel and Kambino vd Guldennagel. They have to prove themselves. Hotcha is already an approved stallion with Studbook Zangersheide.” What did So Beautiful inherit from her parents? “Her sire, Casino Grande, as well as her dam Nambina, both have a lot of blood and are very beautiful. Brazilian flavour in Dublin

SUSAN FINNERTY PHOTOGRAPHY: SUSAN FINNERTY

BY

With the World Equestrian Games looming on the horizon and the Global Champions Tour in full swing, the ‘A teams’ were not in town for this year’s Dublin Horse Show. However, the Mexican team won over the Dublin crowds with a memorable first-time victory in the Longines Nations’ Cup competition, with the home team and reigning European champions tying for second place alongside France and Italy.

L

ed by their Belgian chef d’equipe: Stanny Van Paesschen, whose son Constant was in action at the Valkenswaard round of the Global Champions Tour the same week, it was 37 years since Mexico last competed at Dublin. It was interesting to see the variety of bloodlines on their victorious team, with 50% bred in Europe and two on the opposite side of the Atlantic, including the 16-year-old veteran Landpeter Do Feroleto (Landritter - Wynza x Wangmix) bred by Bia Nicotero and representing the Associação Brasileira de Criadores do Cavalo de Hipismo studbook. Both ‘Peter’, who competed on home Olympic turf with Stephan De Freitas Barcha (BRA), and his current rider Federico Fernandez are true survivors, with each surviving horrific plane and lorry crashes. Despite the motorway crash that has left him with a visible wound, ‘Peter’ still travels the world to compete at CSI5* and CSIO5* level, including La Baule, Aachen and Spruce Meadows this year. Flying the flag for the Criadores de Caballos Deportivos Mexiacanos was the 11-year-old gelding Babel (Billy Du Lys Quimera x High Flyer), bred and ridden by Patricio Pasquel, while the two European-breds were the11-year-old Hanoverian mare Chacna (Chacco-Blue - Karewa x Narew, bred Paul Schockemöhle) with Enrique Gonzalez, and Victer Finn DH Z (Va Vite - Seagmull x Stakkato, bred by Hagen de Dwerse BVBA). That same 10-year-old gelding’s rider, Eugenio Garza

Sinead and Tom Brennan received their Horse Show Week leading show jumping breeder awards in the main arena before the Longines Grand Rix 44 September 2018

Perez, is trained by Irish showjumping hero Eddie Macken, part of the ‘Dream Team’ that won three consecutive NationsCup (1977-1979) in Dublin. Those glory days for Irish Sport Horse breeding, with all four riders on Irish-breds, wasn’t replicated this year, as the horsepower for this year’s home team of Shane Sweetnam, Mark McAuley, Paul O’Shea and Cameron Hanley was supplied by Swedish, French, German and Dutch breeders. Their respective horses were Main Road (Heartbeat Main Mirco x Irco Marco, bred by Marina Björkman); Utchan De Belheme (Calvaro - Queenchan Bluebel x Mr Blue, bred by Frederic Aimez); Skara Glen's Machu Picchu (Silverstone Verona H x Matterhorn, bred by J. Van der Vegt);and Quirex (Quirado - R-Concepta x Concept, bred by Nina and Sonja Ellerbrock). In the €200,000 Longines Grand Prix on the five-day event’s closing afternoon, it was another win for rising Dutch star Kevin Jochems, winner of the King George V Gold Cup at Hickstead two weeks previously, with the same horse Captain Cooper (Namelus R - V.Sarah 17 x Corland for breeder Haras Cooper). Another with Brazilian connections, (his FEI profile records him as bred by the Sao Paolo-based Haras Cooper), the 11-year-old was one of two Namelus R offspring to feature in the Grand Prix top-10. Namelus is by Concorde, out of Joost daughter, Eamelusiena, bred by Stal Roelofs. The other was Brego R’N’B (Namelus R - Nikita x Gerlinus, bred by L.H. and H. Mulder-Buiten), ridden to seventh place by Jochem’s Dutch compatriot Angelique Hoorn. France’s Alexis Deroubaix was the only other rider to record a clear round in the jump-off, but his time of 41.31 on Timon D’Auren (Mylord Carthago - Miss Du Beny x Drakkar des Hutins, bred by Bertrand Chambry) was short of the Flying Dutchman’s unbeatable target of 40.93. Taking third place was the Rio Olympics team gold medal horse Reveur de Hurtebise HDC (Kashmir Van Schuttershof Laika De Radoux x Capricieux des 6 Censes) and Frenchman Kevin Staut, the fastest (40.40) of the four fault-rounds. The home favourite was, of course, the Keith and Shelly Doyle-bred Molly Malone V (Kannan - Janini x Cavalier), with the AESregistered mare having already won this Grand Prix win back in 2014 with Bertram Allen. Luck wasn't with her this year when the 14-year-old crowd favourite finished fifth. However, it was another grey mare, Mo Chroi (Cruising - Into the Blue x Mister Lord xx, bred by

Claire McDonnell) that provided the last Irish Sport Horse win in the Dublin Grand Prix when she won back in 2010 with the Irish Army Equitation School’s Comdt. Gerry Flynn. And rewind to 1999 for another dash of Brazilian flavour when Nelson Pessoa, father of the current Irish chef d’equipe, Rodrigo, was the victor with Special Envoy (King Of Diamonds - Highland Lady x Highland Flight xx, bred by Mary Hughes), the horse that Rodrigo still credits as the most influential in his career.

The status of Irish breeding... That was then, but where is Irish sho jumping breeding now? One of the most intriguing benchmarks at Dublin Horse Show is the LHK Insurance International seven/eight-yearolds competition. Sunday’s final was won by an Irish rider, the Canadian-based Daniel Coyle with Ariel Grange’s Zangersheide-registered mare Legacy (Chippendale Z - Regina D x Bon Ami, bred by Rotty Romain). Runner-up was Amanda Derbyshire, recently announced as part of the British showjumping team for the World Equestrian Games at Tryon in September with the Irish Sport Horse mare Luibanta BH (Luidam - Mibanto x Abantos, bred by Justin Burke). Derbyshire’s Dublin prizewinner was the eight-year-old Holsteiner mare, Celina BH (Canstakko Carrera x Carthago, bred by Lonnie Bechmann Schultz). Six more Irish riders were in the top-10, including thirdplaced Philip McGuane who rounded off a hat-trick for mares in the €14,000 class with the Selle Français mare Antigone Gravelotte (Breemeersen Adorado - Libertina x Caretino, for breeder Claire Breeson). In fourth place was the Mikey Pender-partnered Irish Sport Horse gelding HHS Calais (Cavalier Royale - MHS OBOS Cruise x OBOS Quality 004, bred by Ita Brennan), one of the increasingly few offspring of Cavalier Royale – the groundbreaking Holsteiner sire in Ireland. Another encouraging result was Susan Fitzpatrick’s seventh-placed Fellow Castlefield (Je t’Aime Flamenco – Bred By Liefhebber x Twister. B. Liefhebber) as the Dutch-bred gelding went on to win the 1m45 Millstreet Grand Prix the following week. Stanny Van Paesschen had a busy week as he, together with Bart Bles, judged the Horse Sport Ireland-sponsored ‘Mo Chroi’ four-year-old final, when the guest riders were Daniel Coyle and Richard Howley. Finishing on an impressive aggregate score of 154 marks was Joe Pendergast’s home-bred JPD Dougland (Ard VDL Douglas - Dourwies x Corland), who had sailed through the two earlier qualifying rounds that week with regular rider Shane Goggins. All three of the Dublin young-horse finals feature Cruising-themed names, with the five-year-old ‘Flexible’ championship named in honour of Rich Fellers’s 2012 World Cup final champion and London Olympics team horse Flexible (Cruising - Flex x Safari), bred by Edward and Catherine Doyle. The winner of the 16-strong jump-off on Sunday was Marion Hughes’s MHS New York (Quidam Junior

I - Cavalier Kells Lady x Cavalier Royale), bred by Tom Brennan and partnered by stable jockey Mikey Pender. It was the same cross of Quidam Junior I and Cavalier Royale that produced Ireland’s sole showjumping hope at the Rio Olympics: MHS Going Global, bred by the late Ita Brennan. And fittingly, it was the same bloodlines she had built up that was to see her name posthumously recorded, along with son Tom and Sinead Brennan as the Horse Show week’s leading showjumping breeders. The third of the Horse Sport Ireland-sponsored championships – the Cruising six-year-old final – was won in a closely-contested jump-off by Eddie Moloney (rider) and TSI Equestrian’s Temple Alice (Foxglen Cruise Control Inishannon Shamrock x Rantis Diamond) for breeder Susan McDonald). Aside from show jumping, Ireland’s enviable record as an eventing nursery and the popularity of the young event horse classes as a potential sales outlet means the Dublin finals are one of Irish producers’ main targets. This year’s judges were a stellar bunch, including Rio Olympian and 2014 Badminton Horse Trials winner Sam Griffiths, multiple British team medallist Mary King, and noted producer Angela Tucker. Continental lines were prominent as once the scores were added up for the various phases, including the cross-country element in the main arena, the four-year-old champion was Jason Higgins’s Ogue Special (I’m Special De Muze - Ogue Carel Alice x Harlequin Du Carel) bred by Vincent Murphy. In the five-year-old section, the champion was Aoife Quigley’s home-bred Kilcandra Vanessa (Orestus - Kilcandra Lily de Noche x Orbis xx). Although the judges would have liked to have seen more Thoroughbred blood in their finalists, “We can only judge what we see on the day,” commented a pragmatic King afterwards. According to the 2017 foal statistics, Thoroughbred sires now account for just 12% of last year’s foal crop, so this situation is unlikely to change. In the three-year-old loose jumping finals, the showjumping section winners were Brian Hutchinson’s home-bred gelding SRS Valiant (Je t’Aime Flamenco - Venco x Oklund), and in the filly section it was Trade Horse Limited’s River Field Cornet Chin (Cornet Obolensky -Aldatus Chin x Aldatus Z) for breeder James Farrell that emerged as its champion. The potential event horse three-year-old winner was Brian Daly’s home-bred Newmarket Marley (Newmarket Venture Touchdown Girl x Touchdown), one of the relatively small number of horses said to have changed hands at this year’s show. Even in the showing classes, the perception is that many of the youngsters are picked over years before they can make it to Dublin. One confirmed sale was that of Andrew Etter’s homebred stallion Celtic Hero B Z (Calikot Hero - Cricket Z x Carotin) previously owned in partnership with Belgium’s Luc Henry. Produced with great success on the Irish circuit by Damien Griffin, the six-year-old was sold to America’s Heather CaristoWilliams with the proviso that the stallion return to Etter’s Belmont House Stud at the end of his competition career. ■ September 2018
