sense of familiarity, an old friend who delivers information that continues to be an invaluable resource to breeders everywhere. This 2021 edition of the WBFSHBN Stallion Directory, is the 17th of a perpetual series – and the third time it has been published exclusively online, and free of charge! This is the only ‘global’ stallion database that is ‘live’ for 365 days a year, with entries offering self management by stallion owners and representatives who can independently add/update information, making it even more accurate and efficient. Over the years we have always strived to perfect the tools we place in your hands, although capturing the most up-to-date information in this ever-changing world can often present challenges. However, our task is far from over, and we are committed to delivering this veritable ‘Who’s who’ of the breeding industry. Through our Directory the answers to many questions will be answered, unreservedly. It’s as simple as that: a key... a resource. Year after year we have been recording and cross-referencing information from the stallion databases developed by member studbooks of the WBFSH. Step by step! Four thousand stallions recorded on our database during the first year, increasing to over 9,000 every year since then. As the volume of studbooks and breeders is expanding every year, they are the best witnesses to our progression and professionalism. Consequently, over the years, as we focus on purging deceased and gelded stallions from our database (although we do appreciate that their reputations are being kept alive thanks to modern reproductive techniques long after Stallion Directory 2021

they’ve left this world), we are constantly adding newly licensed/approved stallions as soon as information becomes available. In terms of our rankings, each year they are updated by a process of due diligence and, as always, we are striving for quality not quantity. Continuous improvement is our goal to better inform you, the breeders, and provide a window into the world of sport horse breeding. We also answer basic questions – what are the dominant bloodlines. Or, more anecdotally, what is the average age of active stallions, the dominant colour? This is why, for the 12th year in a row, the WBFSH is supporting our initiative. This renowned Federation’s logo on our front cover is our motivation, our encouragement. Our thanks go to all the private stallion owners who are primarily concerned with the Directory entries, and to those studbooks who every year are providing reliable information. We extend our thanks to them for their involvement and continued support. This year, the stallions and contacts appear online as a unique interactive database, where owners can self manage their stallions, adding and updating information. A major step forward for breeding in a world where technology is an essential tool. TORY

PART I: THE STALLION LIST • Life number: While some studbooks have embraced the UELN concept, there are others who have yet to adopt this universal numbering system for birth registrations. A pity, since registration numbers are essential for accurately tracking horses whose names may change several times during their sporting careers. • Year of birth and pedigree: Virtually 100% • Size and colour: Included in the database where provided by studbooks. • Breeder, studbook of origin: It’s frustrating that some studbooks and independent breeders often fail to mention this information. So, dear breeders, please take pride in your role and honour the accomplishments of others by sharing this information with us and the rest of the world. Breeders are the most important component in this project, alongside the stallions themselves. • Approval studbooks: A unique aspect of our Directory, as an increasing number of ‘star’ stallions are regularly approved by more than one studbook, even if they are not recognized by their own birth studbook. Ironic!

We continue to strive for alphabetical integrity by using primary names to better facilitate the search process and, hopefully, avoid any foreign language confusion. The breeder who owns one stallion is as important as one who owns 20 or more. By cross-referencing every stallion entry (where the owner is known), our Directory database has become a valuable ‘interactive’ source. This is why it is unique, and why the searchable online database provides the ability to sort stallions by specified criteria. Power at your fingertips, although when contact information is minimal or unrecorded so a vital link is lost.

DIAMANT DE SEMILLY – A DIAMOND IN EVERY STRAW

ompared to last year’s Sires of Sires ranking there are no changes in the top seven. However, when we look at the numbers of sons approved/licensed by member studbooks of the WBFSH we notice some significant changes. Is this a precursor of future changes at the top of this ranking? We will find out next year. Meanwhile, it’s Diamant de Semilly safe to say that Diamant de Semilly’s (Le Tot de Semilly – Venise des Cresles x Elf III) supremacy is not a passing phase. On the contrary, he continues to widen his lead, thanks to a good rise in sons from 134 to 141. In partnership with Eric Levallois, Diamant performed at the highest international showjumping level, collecting many victories and honourable placings. These include team gold at the 2020 WEG in Jerez de la Frontera, and French champion in that same year, plus team silver medal at the 2003 European championship in Donaueschingen. This French progenitor’s popularity continues unabated. There is yet one more stallion who has reached the 100+ mark for sons, namely Quidam de Revel (Jalisco B - Dirka x Nankin), who maintains his second place on 110. We cannot overlook a rising star, the BWP-born Cornet Obolensky/ex Windows van het Costersveld (Clinton - Rabanna van Costersveld x Heartbreaker) who gained the largest volume of approved/licensed sons this past year, rising from 84 to 94, to rank fourth. Will he infiltrate the top three next year? Sandro Hit (Sandro Song - Loretta

x Ramino), dropped three sons, but kept his third place, while Kannan (Voltaire - Cemeta x Nimmerdor), who passed away in 2020 saw a good rise in sons from 77 to 84, to rank fifth. Upward mover Casall (Caretino Kira XVII x Lavall I) caused an international showjumping furore for many years under the saddle of Sweden’s Rolf-Göran Bengtsson, Casall, including European championships, WEG, World Cup finals, GCT classes, as well as the Olympic Games. Casall climbed from equal ninth (64) to equal eighth (alongside Cassini I), with the addition of six sons, 10 more than Carthago (Capitol I – Perra x Calando I) and 11 more than Heartbreaker (Nimmerdor – Bacarole x Silvano), respectively ranked 11th and 12th. There is a good chance that their numbers of approved sons will increase in the coming years as breeders today often combine them with the better dams by using the ICSI technique. One major surprise is For Pleasure (Furioso II – Gigantin x Grannus), who gained seven sons and three places although he died a decade ago this year. In partnership with two world-class riders, namely Lars Nieberg and Marcus Ehning, For Pleasure won double team gold medals at two Olympic Games, and enjoyed an exceptionally long and triumphant showjumping career, which is a great advertisement for his good health, hardiness and performance qualities. hanging from one mid-life career to another is always challenging, but converting a top eventing horse into a world-class showjumper is extremely rare. But, Denver quite literally took that leap into the spotlight. Denver’s early education came in the hands of French rider Constance Lucie Copestake, who competed and progressed with him through the ranks. Indeed, the pair scored some notable results with top placing at each level up to up to four-star, when they finished fifth at Chatsworth CCI and 4*-S in May 2019. In September of that same year, just a few short months later, Denver appeared in his first CSI, under the saddle of Britain’s Holly Smith, immediately followed by their first five star victory during the La Vanguardia Trophy class during the CSIO5*-NC Final in Barcelona, Spain. According to Marleen Woertman, the daughter of Denver’s breeder Anton Woertman: “I don’t think my father thought he would ever breed a foal like Denver. During the time my father was alive we only bred one or two foals. It was his hobby and he loved German bloodlines. He was a passionate breeder and had really a good feeling for it, but breeding was always a pure hobby for us. My father went to stallion approvals and studied all the bloodlines. I used to help him with starting the horses under saddle, but we had already sold Denver when he was a foal. As my sister and I grew older we got more interested in dressage and we were both quite successful. My father had a very good eye for knowing whether a foal would suit us for later. If not he would sell the foal, like he did with Denver. He is I think the only one I didn’t start under saddle. I also believe that if he stayed with us he would not had made it to this level. Even though I don’t remember Denver clearly, this award has been the trigger for me to pick up breeding myself, and also to honor my father. He passed away in 2014 so it means a lot for us that this award has come our way.” Constance Lucie Copestake has fond memories of Denver: “We found Denver as a five-yearold in the Netherlands and he had just done a bit of showjumping up till then. He was always very ‘blood’ to ride – athletic, powerful, and light on his feet. He had a huge stride and always made everything feel effortless. My favorite memory with him was when he finished fifth at Chatsworth in 2019. He was always super to jump, and so adjustable for a big horse. It’s fantastic to see him doing so well in showjumping and I’m proud to have been a part of his journey. I wish him and Holly all the best in what should hopefully be an exciting year.” Holly Smith shares these sentiments: “Denver’s quality for jumping is that he is full of blood, really athletic and really brave. He progressed quickly to jumping the bigger courses because of this. The only disadvantage from his former career is that he learned to be quite strong in the cross-country, which is why he switched to showjumping. When I jump a few classes it comes into play and he can still be a bit strong. The advantages are that he is physically very fit, his flatwork is well developed, and he is very brave and well-travelled. red by Inge and Günter Bastian in Bargteheide, Germany, they recall, “As a filly she already showed her extraordinary and supple movements.” Weihegold’s dam, Weihevoll, was bought at the auction in Vechta as a three-year-old. She gave birth to only one product: Weihegold. Inge Bastian decided to use Don Schufro for her mare as she was familiar with the bloodline, having his dam, Fiesta, in her stable as a broodmare. By coincidence Christine Arns-Krogmann noticed Weihegold when a friend tried a horse at the Bastian property. She was crazy about Don Schufro blood and flabbergasted when she noticed Weihegold. “I had no choice than to buy her, although the Bastian family hadn’t intended to sell her. I used my perseverance and didn’t stop calling them.” Finally, Arns-Krogman was in a position to start Weihegold under saddle and immediately spotted her talent. “I’m experienced in breaking horses. However, what I felt with ‘Weihe’ I’d never felt before. She didn’t want to make mistakes, she was so ‘teachable’, incredible!” For the next few years Weihegold alternated training with Beatrice Buchwald and staying at home with Arns-Krogman for a break during the winter months. The first time that Arns-Krogmann felt Weihegold was a precious exception and could become the best in the world was during the Freestyle to music in Amsterdam 2016 with Isabell Werth in the saddle. “It was phenomenal, goosebumps!” Embryo transfer has already delivered a good number of foals from Weihegold. “We feel differently with Weihegold than with our other mares”, Arns-Krogman explains. “Normally I use D-stallions, but as ‘Weihe’ has an immensely good hindleg and a wonderful character and working attitude, a stallion doesn’t have to add this. Therefore, I look for stallions with a good front leg, stallions from the S-line.” Weihegold gave three foals in 2009: Sir Weihbach (Donnerhall) was approved in 2012, Total Hope (Totilas) was approved and became a winning stallion in Sweden. Three other Weihegold children have stayed with Arns-Krogmann: Weihcine (Fürst Heinrich), Weihronce (For Romance) and Weihe’s Hope (Sir Donnerhall). “Weihronce is a lookalike of her mother, a little ‘Weihe-duplicate’. She also felt the same when I was breaking her as well.” In 2012, Weihegold competed for the first time in German M and S dressage shown by Beatrice Buchwald. From nine starts, she won six times. In 2013 she won several Prix St Georges tests, resulting in winning the famous Nürnberger Burgpokal in Frankfurt. In 2014 her wins continued with the Louisdor Prize for young Grand Prix horses. In 2015 Buchwald debuted Weihegold in Grand Prix with immediate wins in Neumünster, Oldenburg, Salzburg and in the GP Special in Frankfurt. Partnered by Buchwald’s trainer, Isabell Werth, Weihegold debuted successfully in the World Cup in 2016 winning Amsterdam and Neumünster, followed by Olympic team gold, individual silver in Rio 2016. This latest breeding ranking win in a short season comes from just four classes in two events: CDI-W Amsterdam and CDI4* Achleiten (AUT), which resulted in four outright victories in GP (two), GP Special, and GP Freestyle. ■ Claartje van Andel Weihegold/Isabell Werth (GER)

red by Johan and Jannie Schurink, Scuderia 1918 Don Quidam (Quidam 8 - Nairoby x Amethist), to give him his full name, has been competing since September 2018 under the saddle of leading Australian eventing rider Kevin McNab. Jan and Jenny Schurink started breeding some 25 years ago and now have just three horses and two ponies, although at their peak they had 17 horses. According to Jan, “To have a foal that’s born in our stables become number one in the world is amazing. It is great for my wife as she did a lot of work here with the horses and she deserves the award.” Don Quidam’s dam Nairoby (Amethist) competed at advanced-level dressage, but what is especially interesting is that his fourth dam is a Thoroughbred descending from TB-3H. Out of a half sister by Denver, Sanne Z (Hemmingway), comes the 1m40 jumping horse Glenn (Cornet’s Prinz), and from a different half sister, A La, comes the 1m40 jumping mare Gold Lady (Armitage). Jan Schurink continued by explaining: “Already as a foal Don Quidam had a lot of presence and showed a lot of power. We lost track of him after we co-raised him with our farrier. He then came back on our radar when we learned around two years ago that he was under the saddle of Kevin McNab. He is making us more and more proud as time passes, and we hope Don Quidam will become an Olympic winner. “The stallion Amethist was rather a classic stallion, so we were trying to find a more modern stallion for Nairoby, and that is how we discovered Quidam de Revel. Every now and then we looked to Oldenburg for stallions, and that’s where we noticed Quidam, and Don Quidam was the result. As it happened, we didn’t really think about Don Quidam as an eventer, as he was jumping bred. We certainly don’t recognize Nairoby in Don Quidam because she was very good in dressage and jumping, and was expecially strong when she had to jump. Indeed, it was much easier to handle her in dressage. It makes us very proud to have bred a horse like Don Quidam.” According to Kevin McNab: “My journey so far with [Scuderia 1918] Don Quidam has been very exciting. He’s the type of character you love to have on your yard and ride everyday. He's a real tryer and loves his work, so as a rider he makes my job fun. He improves every time we go out. When I started riding him I could always feel he had a lot of movement and ability on the flat and in 2019 we really cemented our partnership and started started producing some very competitive scores after the dressage. To jump he is a pocket rocket. He has a great record when it comes to jumping and has now had a number of high placings at 4* level including 2nd Burnham Market 4*S 2019, 2nd Barroca d'Alva 4*S 2019 and 7th Luhmuhlen 4*S 2019. More excitingly he finished 7th at his first 5*L at Pau in 2019. He is now on the selectors’ radar as we approach selection for Tokyo 2021.” Interestingly, Nairoby was the Schurink family’s first horse, and she’s still with them at the age of 26. GREAT COMPETITORS DON’T ALWAYS MAKE GREAT SIRES Showjumping

Oldenburg-International: “We are trying to establish a studbook specifically for breeding showjumpers. In the past 20 years, the aim of most of the breeders, especially in our area, Oldenburg, and Hannover, even in Westfalia, has been to breed a dressage horse. Even at the stallion grading, they are looking for horses that move well, and trot well, because they are always easier to sell when they are young than the showjumpers, and as a result even the good showjumping mares, by Grannus, or Gotthard or Domspatz, these good lines, are being sent to dressage stallions. That in my opinion is the wrong direction – you end up with nothing – half a dressage horse, half a showjumper. That is nothing because we need specialists. I don’t believe we can breed a horse for every discipline. You have to specialise.” And sure enough, Chalou is by the Mecklenburg stallion ChaccoBlue, but he is out of a mare by the Hanoverian Domino, and going back a few generations you find those great Hanoverian stallions of the past: Domspatz, Duellent, Grande.

nce upon a time, there were lots of eccentrics in the world of showjumping in the ranks of both the riders and horses: riders who flung themselves in the air as they neared the jump, horses who bucked on landing, but now it is all so much more professional, the international style so consolidated, that they all tend to ride the same, cover the ground the same, and look much the same over a fence. Enter this year's number one stallion on the list. Chalou is something of a throw back, he certainly has a style of his own, his front legs extended straight out, as if he was jumping water, but he does it over every fence. A different style, but undeniable results. Ridden by Emanuele Gaudiano, Chalou has placed well in CSI5* all over the world. It seems that this aerodynamic jumping style can be an advantage when running against the clock. Obviously, all the stats that come out of the Covid-19 era should be treated with extreme caution as most of the world's major showjumping competitions were cancelled Chalou was lucky then to pick up lots of placings in Doha in February of last year year, and also in Salzburg in January. Chalou was born at Gestüt Lewitz, Paul Schockemöhle's powerhouse stud in the east of Germany, and it’s interesting that he’s branded OS, as is his dam, so we are now into generations of horses in a studbook that was only established in 1997. In a 1998 interview Schockemöhle explained the aims of the, then, recently Hearts Destiny (Heart Throb x Rabino) formed Springferdezuchtverband ridden by Holly Smith (GBR)

“Her looks, and she had a lot of blood, a lot of power, that's what I liked. I love Cassini I, that's why I bought her.” ◆ How big is your stud?

“We have about 50 horses now.” ◆ Why did you go to France for the sire of

Dominator, what was it about Diamante? “We liked Diamante for his power, and it is always a good combination, French and Dutch blood. It's also a feeling that you have when you choose a stallion. Now we are using some different stallions, Heartbreaker, Chacco-Blue, Agenix, Comme il Faut as well as Diamante. We use good stallions and we only breed them to good mares.” Like so many good stallions, the feeling is that Dominator needs a mare with blood, but there is no doubting his capacity to breed power and scope. I'm pretty sure he will be featuring again in the breeding rankings when competitions finally return to normal...

Dressage stallions There is always a problem ranking stallions based on performance rather than progeny, a chance that you end up with a collection of horses that you would love to ride, but wouldn't want anywhere near your precious broodmare, so I am surprised, and relieved, to find that this Stallion Directory 2021

year's BN dressage stallion rankings contain some lovely horses that not only excel in the dressage arena, but have the looks, conformation and breeding, to go on to be sires. Heading the standings is that wonderful campaigner, Damsey (by Dressage Royal out of a mare by the Ramiro son, Rituel) who was retired at the age of 19 in Doha at the end of February. Like so many good stallions, Damsey was rejected by the licensing commission in 2004 and was sold to Dutchman Hans Miedama at the auction of non-licensed stallions. He was licensed one year later and sold to Doug Leatherdale to join his stallion band at Jens Meyer's stallion station. In 2016, Helen Langhanenberg took over the ride from Steffen Frahm who had introduced him to Grand Prix. Just one year later, Helen and Damsey were members of the gold medal winning team at the 2017 Europeans in Gothenburg. In 2019 the pair were third in the World Cup finals in that same city. Twenty times, the pair scored over 80% in the Freestyle. It's that longetivity that Jens believes has made Damsey popular with the Dutch breeders: “He’s 18 years old and for three years he has been the best stallion in the BN dressage rankings. The Dutch breeders say to us, his attributes are that he is sound, and he can give this to the Dutch breeding. I said to them, but who uses an old stallion? No, they say, we had this success with De Niro, we did it the same way, introduced De Niro to the breeders and it works well on the dam side. But in Germany, they won’t use Damsey because he has a Rituel mother – unpopular bloodlines – but in the end, this horse did a great job, and this thinking by the Dutch to breed mind and a good walk is thinking for the future.” It is also the case that sometimes the horses that make the stallion list are way down on the competitors list but this time around, the top stallion, Damsey is fourth on the former, while the second stallion, Desperado NOP (Vivaldi x Havidoff ) is seventh. 45

Eventing What do the stallions Heraldik xx, Mister Imp, Obus Quality, Puissance, Contendro and Jaguar Mail have in common? They have been the most influential sires of eventers in the history of the sport. The other thing they share is that not one of them ever set foot on a cross country track. The fact of the matter is that stallions do not make great eventers, with notable exceptions, the most noteworthy of which was William Fox-Pitt's Chilli Morning. But when combined with a year in which most of the big three-day events were cancelled, I approached this assessment with a feeling of dread, complicated by the fact that so many eventers are listed as stallions long after they have been castrated. But there was a nice surprise waiting, the leading horse is a stallion I highlighted in my, alas, long-distance analysis of the results of the WBCYH in Le Lion d'Angers, one of the few major eventing competitions to go ahead last year. That stallion is Sweetwaters Ziethen TSF (Abendtanz x Campetot AA) who with Sophie Leube took home the sevenyear-old championship. The pair were on familiar territory having finished fifth in the six-year-old division the previous year, and the stallion never put a foot wrong after posting the best dressage score of 27.6. The stallion is from the Sweetwater Stud in Bulgaria, by the Trakehner stallion Abendtanz out of an Anglo Arab mare by Campetot. Abendtanz’s pedigree is studded with the names of the famous Trakehner stallions – Sixtus, Kostolany, Enrico Caruso, and Kassiber. Sweetwaters Ziethen TSF was purchased as a foal at foot with his dam, and raised at Sweetwater. Stud head, George Muehlethaler told me: “Sweetwater Stud was only established in 2012; previously I had bred Swiss Sporthorses on Selle Francais lines as a hobby, Stallion Directory 2021

and to support my tuition, and then I bred Standardbreds in Canada.” ◆ What is your breeding background?

“I majored in Animal Science, then developed in 1980, the first Selection Index for Swiss Sporthorses. After graduating I had the chance to work for two-and-a-half years at the Swiss Main Office for Small Animal Breeding (Pigs, Sheep and Goats), responsible for selection. In 1983 I migrated to Canada with my young family, developed farms, and bred Holstein dairy cattle under the Petinesca and Genervations prefix. We sold semen, embryos, and stock worldwide and had, beside others, Petinesca Charisma, the number one bull for type in Canada. After going back to University in 2000 for an MBA, we dispersed the breeding herd in 2005 and pursued full-time the new project in Bulgaria.” ◆ Is the main aim to breed sport horses or race-

horses? “Our aim is to breed eventers with a minimum of 50% Thoroughbred, Anglo-Arab, or Arab blood. Since we stand the Thoroughbred sire Nuntius xx (Dalakhani brother to Novellist), we also have some mares devoted to breeding racehorses, but the sport horse breeding is growing year after year.” The second ranked horse is also worth serious consideration as a sire of eventers. Leipheimer van't Verahof is the result of the partnership between the Belgian duo of master breeder, Joris de Brabander and one of the true heroes of eventing, Karin Donckers. The stallion is by the great Vigo d'Arsouilles out of a Thoroughbred mare, Southern Queen by South Gale. Karin has evented two full brothers: At three star, Extebaria van't Verahof, and at four-star, Fletcha van't Verahof. With 76,17% blood, Leipheimer is just right as an eventing stallion. Those two are the only ones on the BN list who have placed in the top 100 competitors... Enough said! Christopher Hector 47

SIRE RANKING BASED ON SIX BEST PERFORMING OFFSPRING

he annual WBFSH/FEI horse rankings are based on points earned in FEI competitions from October 1 to September 30 each year. From these rankings we have created a list of the top sires per discipline by calculating the points earned by their top six performance offspring in FEI competitions. As some stallions have many more offspring than others, limiting them to their best six representatives creates a level foundation for comparison. For the third year running, ChaccoBlue heads the showjumping ranking and his increasing annual points total reflects the improving competition results of his best offspring. In this case: Explosion W (ranked #1, and 2019 award winner in the best LONGINES-WBFSH breeder/horse rankings – see page 29); Calisto Blue (#11); Chalou (#32); Carlchen W (#56); Chacco Kid (#72); Blue Movie (#101). Likewise, Cornet Obolensky/ex Windows van het Costersveld, defending his second place, but now sees Kashmir van Schuttershof in close third, having moved up two places from last year. A substantial promotion also for a name that appears in several of our rankings, the Selle Français Diamant de Semilly, up from

eighth to fourth, thanks primarily to the exploits of Don VHP Z NOP. Diamant was, in fact, ranked second in the WBFSH ranking from the results of some 160 competing offspring, compared to over 200 for Chacco-Blue. With the exception of #1 ranked De Niro with a substantial lead, the dressage ranking sees many changes, and four newcomers: Don Schufro; Florestan I; Michellino; and Gribaldi. However, Jazz ranks #1 according to the WBFSH and counting the results of 19 competing offspring – more than any other topranked sire. Contendro I, the eventing leader, remains unchanged, while two others have shown themselves to be consistent producers in recent years: Diamant de Semilly and Jaguar Mail – both Selle Français. The other seven are all new names on this 2019 list, although several have previously appeared in this top 10, then dropped out and have now rebounded, including Limmerick and Master Imp. In conclusion, reviewing rankings does not provide definitive solutions to the breeding equation, but can be valuable if the information is used as part of a much larger equation, and with an element of good luck! ■

STATISTICS! ARE THEY REALLY MEANINGFUL?

his 17th edition of the BREEDING NEWS WORLDWIDE SPORT HORSE STALLION DIRECTORY – our third digital version – includes nearly 10,000 stallions, cross-referenced to their owners/representatives in our online database. This number fluctuates marginally throughout the year as newly approved/licensed sires are added, and deceased stallions or those whose licenses have been revoked or have expired are deleted. This online format provides an interactive and dynamic database that allows owners or studfarms to self-manage their stallion entries, including uploading photos and/or videos. CHART 1 – GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION of stallions on a global scale, per birth studbook. We have only included those countries whose total represents a significant percentage of stallions. Germany consistently occupies the largest piece of the pie at over 45%, followed by France (SF and AA), the Netherlands (KWPN, NRPS), Scandinavia (Danish, Swedish, Finnish and Norwegian Warmblood), and Belgium (BWP,

SBS, plus Zangersheide). We continue to include Thoroughbreds in our analysis as they are licensed for Warmblood breeding with virtually all the major studbooks, but have no relevance to birth countries. ‘Other’ includes Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, NZ, South Africa, North America, etc., representing virtually every continent that boasts worldclass sport horse breeding, but with a smaller percentage of approved stallions. CHARTS 2, 3 AND 4 respectively illustrate years of birth, colour and size. Typically, there are only small differences from year to year which are due more to the upgrading of information as it becomes available. However, for the the second year running we’ve noticed a size increase of approximately one centimetre, and chestnuts have also risen in popularity. Due to studbook inconsistencies in the formatting of stallion lists, we crossreference information so it meets the needs of the Directory as well as, hopefully, providing a useful tool to our breeders. ■

AUCTIONS POST STRONG RESULTS DESPITE COVID-19

here were some doubts 12 months ago as to whether the marketplace for horses during the Covid-19 pandemic would force a strong economic downtown. However, in response to the enforced restrictions regarding indoor gatherings, and rather than waiting for the situation to improve, studbooks and auction houses took to the Internet and continued to sell their wares online – heralding the birth of hybrid auctions – with some posting record sales. So creativity and adaptation to circumstances definitely paid off quite handsomely in some cases. Perhaps not coincidentally, many studbooks also announced a welcome upswing in foreign buyers who no longer had to travel – saving the added expense of air fares, hotel accommodation, etc., – but could enjoy the shopping experience from their home armchairs, and in a familiar language. Where you look at the results on the next page, Paul Schockemöhle’s Chacco-Blue led the field by a substantial margin, although an in-depth analysis is necessary in order to determine which sires represent the best bet! Bred by Jean-Max and Liliane Lucbernet, the Selle Français New Boy de Logerie (2001: Baie de Villeclare - Reale du Tremblay x Ecureuil du Bois), with just one massive sale at €682,500 naturally leads the

sires’ field for ‘average’ sales price, and although he’s a 1m60 CSI performer himself, he represents a more obscure bloodline so is perhaps a name to watch in future sales results. Other sires with fewer than 10 sales Stallion Directory 2021

who likewise posted high averages are also perhaps sending a message to prospective breeders/ buyers that there is a premium to be paid for the ‘rarity’ value of some bloodlines. Overall, 24 sires on this auction ranking list posted sales of €1,000,000+, although few came close to the multi-million euros earned by Chacco-Blue and Cornet Obolensky offspring. However, these two are worlds apart in terms of individual totals in all three respects: sales volume, sales, and average prices, with the latter appearing to win the popularity stakes by some 275%, yet his sales average is . The negative discrepancy occurs in the ‘average’ sales price, with Cornet Obolensky (€18,933) falling below 20% of Chacco-Blue’s €105,838. Given the aforementioned ‘rarity value’ – does this indicate a tipping point beyond which the volume of births becomes almost unviable in terms of sales prices considering the cost of semen (usually at the high end for the most popular stallions), and all the other breeding-associated expenses. Logically – and without being discipline specific – should breeders be looking for the ‘best bet’ in terms of median popularity and mid-range sales prices? Obviously, the stocks of frozen semen remaining from deceased stallions us generally ‘unknown’, so do these sires represent a good investment? For every question there is likely to be more than one answer, taking any mares’ qualities and/or deficiencies into account, so breeding and selling sport horses continues to be seen as a combination of art, science, knowledge, intuition, with a large amount of luck! ■ 59

EXPLANATORY NOTES • Life No: When stallions are sold and/or change nationality, a birth number may be lost and remain

unknown, or a new registration number subsequently issued by another licensing studbook. To date, the 10-digit ULN (Unique Life Number) has not been adopted universally. • Birth studbook: For the majority, ‘part-bred’ means a Thoroughbred/Warmblood cross. Part-bred stallions are typically approved or licensed later in life based on their own or their offsprings’ competition results. In some cases, no WBFSH-recognized studbook may have existed in the stallion’s home country at the time of birth. Similarly, birth studbooks may have merged and former acronyms may now be meaningless to the majority of breeders. We have, therefore, adopted either the new studbook name, where it is provided and recognized, or used ‘unknown’. Although the WBFSH does not recognize the Jockey Club as an independent studbook, many Thoroughbreds (designated by the ‘xx’ suffix) are approved/licensed for Warmblood breeding by a WBFSH member studbook. Special note: Only full members and association studbooks in good standing with the WBFSH are included in the directory so, from time to time, a studbook and its stallions may be deleted. • Clones: When a clone is approved/licensed as a sire by a member studbook of the WBFSH he qualifies for inclusion in the Stallion Directory. When a clone is listed in the Directory, we will add (Clone) in parenthesis following their birth name. Similarly, in the ‘Breeder’ column, the name of the original stallion breeder will be followed by the clone’s breeder (where known). • Colour: Among the world’s studbooks, nomenclature for horse colours are as diverse as the colours themselves. In general, we have adopted the birth studbook’s recorded colour, although they may not be universal. For instance, in Europe, a black and white horse is typically known as Piebald, but may be designated as Black Tobiano or Pinto by some breeding associations. It should be noted that the various shades of ‘bay’ (bright bay, brown bay, black bay, … etc.) have been condensed to either ‘bay’ (B) or ‘dark bay’ (DB) in the Stallion Directory. The online database provides a drop-down menu for colour abbreviations. • Name: Where known, we have included a former name by which a stallion might have been commonly recognized, although this information is not always notified to us. Similarly, where a stallion’s name has been changed with the addition of a sponsor prefix or suffix, we have primarily retained the original name, with a few exceptions. (Hopefully, this will help to avoid any confusion as some competing horses’ names have changed several times during short periods.) • Contact Information: Please note that the names in the ‘contacts’ column in the stallion section are cross-referenced alphabetically to the contacts section. It should also be noted that to avoid alphabetical confusion, proper names appear first; i.e. Lewitz Gestüt, rather than Gestüt Lewitz.
