Kota Kinabalu, 2 July 2020 - The Breeze team made a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC). The team was welcomed by the director of MOTAC, Ag. Ahmad Zaki bin Abu Bakar. The Breeze team consisted of Breeze director, Mohammad Iskandar Ali, their sales and marketing team, along with the creative team and administrator. The purpose of the courtesy visit was to discuss plans for the future between the two. Among the matters discussed were plans of collaborations for upcoming MOTAC events. This includes a

photo competition MOTAC is organizing with Sony Malaysia to promote wildlife in Sabah. Although MOTAC has determined some spots where contestants can go to take their photos, Breeze has also suggested more locations based on current working partners. Ahmad Zaki also expressed the need to further promote islands in Sabah as ecotourism diving spots. His ministry is working on reviving the coral life of selected islands. Breeze offered to help with promoting these islands to locals to visit them along with other lesser known tourist spots located in Sabah. The last issue discussed is the omission of the Visit Malaysia 2020 logo from the cover of Breeze Magazine. Ahmad Zaki explained that MOTAC has decided to postpone the campaign due to the current situation the world is facing. The Breeze team supports the decision, however, the tourism sector should be supported with locals in mind. The courtesy visit ended on a positive note. Both parties parted with the understanding of the roles each will have to play in order to make the collaborations in the future successful.

The canon r5 & r6 are here
C
anon fans rejoice! The dawn of the new age of photography is here. Well, for Canon at least. They’ve just launched the Canon EOS R5 and R6 full-frame mirrorless cameras, and oh boy are the specs powerful. Focused on advanced amateurs and professional photographers, these cameras meet the needs of every hybrid photographer out there. The EOS R5 and R6 share a few things in common. Both are equipped with the new DIGIC X image processor and Canon’s Dual Focus AF II that improves the auto-focus (AF) capabilities from past models. To add to that, Canon has introduced 100% AF coverage for the first time in any EOS line-up. They’ve also introduced AF priority for both people and animals, being able to recognise the heads and eyes of the subject too. Sports and wildlife photographers would be glad that both are capable of shooting up to 20fps, coupled with dual card slots for higher transfer speeds that provide smooth continuous shooting experiences. In body image stabilization (IBIS) is also available in both cameras, making it easier to take pictures when hand holding long focal length lenses. It’ll also come in handy when shooting video without gimbal stabilizers. Speaking of video, this is where the cameras differ. The R5 can record up to 8K 30 fps videos with ease while the R6 tops up at 4K 60fps. The resolution of the sensors are also different. Even though both use CMOS sensors, the R5 sports 45 megapixels
by Noel Jinguli Images | Canon Malaysia
12
while the R6 uses the 20-megapixel sensor from the 1DX Mark III. With that said, both the R5 and R6 are ergonomically designed. They are smaller and thinner compared to their full-frame DSLR counterparts from Canon. That’s the beauty of mirrorless cameras, right? Also, the simple user interface and button layout offers the same feel as the other Canon cameras, while also being user friendly for newcomers to the system. The choices of lenses for the RF mount that the R5 and R6 use is also commendable. Canon has also added a few more lenses in the line-up in conjunction with the release of these cameras. However, if you have your old EF or EF-S lenses lying around, you can still use them on the R5 and R6 with the help of an adapter. If you’re looking to upgrade to a full-frame body or move to a mirrorless system, these should definitely be on your radar. They cater to all types of photographers, from wildlife to landscape, and even hybrid shooters. It just goes to show, Canon is now serious about their mirrorless offerings.

he first thing that comes to mind about Tenom is definitely their signature Tenom Coffee. However, Tenom’s true identity can be found at the Murut Cultural Centre, a 33 acres cultural hub that showcases the legacy of the unique Murut culture, situated 13km or a 15 minute drive from north of Tenom town, lies next to Pegalan River. Murut ethnic is the third largest indigenous group in Sabah consisting of sub-ethnics such as Nabaai, Tahol/Tagol, Kolor, Bookan, Binta, Paluan, Timugon, Serudung, Tenggara and Tengala.
Enjoy their traditional dance performance called Magalang Magunatip which is held every weekend, starting from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. After that, further onto their Must-Try traditional games such as Sakimpang, Menyumpit or test out your jumping skill on a traditional wooden trampoline, locally known as Lansaran. Through this experience, the centre hopes visitors have a glimpse and learn of what it feels like to be part of the Murut culture. The centre itself provides halls and spaces that can cater seminars, workshops, forums, courses, lectures, culture researches and any other activities in regards to the development and promotion of the Murut cultural arts and heritage. Before ending your day, make sure to stop by at the handicraft store. So, come on by to Murut Cultural Centre on your next trip to Tenom! For more information, contact Mr. Mohd Soffriezan Yahya (Manager) or Mr. Maicheal Pingai at 087 - 302 421.
Having a centre for the Murut community is what Datuk Kadoh Agundong, the then Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Sabah envisioned for Tenom. It went under construction starting in 1994 and completed in 1996. Upon entering the centre, visitors are greeted with giant belian timbers, each with distinctive Murut motives. This made the centre to be known as the Building 4B - “Biggest Belian Building In Borneo.” Visitors can walk down through Murut’s rich history and tales of famous Murut warriors such as Ontoros Antanom who united the Murut people in Rundum and Pensiangan during the Rundum Revolt against British colonists in 1915. making hybrids & evs popular
H
ave you noticed that electric vehicles (EV) and hybrids are almost non-existent in Sabah? Of course, there are some Toyota Priuses running around the city and we see the occasional Smart ForTwo here and there, but we mainly see cars running on fossil fuels on our roads. Ever wonder why is that? Let’s be honest, most hybrids available in Malaysia are either unattractive or really expensive. If you go the way of the used cars, hybrids like the Prius or the Honda Insight are to me, bland looking. If you are buying a new hybrid, the cheapest one would be the Honda Jazz Hybrid, around RM87k as of this article. If you want something fancy, then get ready to fork out RM100k or more. The BMW i8 costs more than RM1.5mil. You could buy a house with that! Then there’s the issue with maintenance and the charging infrastructure. Although they’re not that much harder and costlier to maintain compared to fossil fuel cars, finding someone who knows what they’re doing is. This isn’t even talking about EVs where the motors are powered by batteries. The batteries need to be charged so finding charging stations, apart from home, is close to impossible. Handling the maintenance of EVs also takes professionals who know what they’re doing. Lastly, the mindset of car owners need to be mentioned. This is generalizing, but car owners here still don’t understand the consequences of using fossil fuels. As long as a car gets them from
by Noel Jinguli Images | Unsplash 16
point A to B, then they have served their purpose. Therefore, how our cars affect our environment isn’t important. The price of hybrids and EVs, plus the maintenance issues also turns off many car buyers. So what do we need to do? Well, establishing infrastructure for charging stations should be first on the list. Then, bringing in and training professionals who know what to do would help a lot. Encouraging car buyers with incentives for buying hybrids and EVs can also help to persuade them. Above all, educating future car owners on the benefits of these types of cars, especially for the environment, can help in the long run. There’s always a price to pay when doing something meaningful. In this case, we’re totally sacrificing money and the convenience of owning hybrids and EVs. However, if we take action in minimizing those sacrifices, who knows, Teslas might become a common sight in Kota Kinabalu. Most importantly, our environment will be much cleaner in the future.

Theresa tan: Paving The way for luxury
W
e would like to introduce Ms. Theresa Tan, the Head of Sales for BMW Automobiles at Regas Premium Sabah. She was born in Kuching, Sarawak, but grew up in Kota Kinabalu (KK). Theresa used to work in a reconditioned car dealership until 2 years ago. We got the opportunity to sit down and talk with her about her experience in leading the BMW dealership in KK. Breeze (B): Tell us about Regas Premium Sabah. Theresa (T): Well, Regas Premium Sabah is actually supported by Regas Premium Kuching. It has always been a family business, with me, my siblings, and cousins being in charge of different parts of the company. We’ve always wanted to diversify the business, so when the opportunity came in July 2018, we became the exclusive dealer for BMW vehicles in KK. B: What are the challenges you face as the Head of Sales? T: Managing the BMW brand can become challenging sometimes. Of course, we need to look after a big brand name, so we need to comply with guidelines provided by BMW Malaysia
by Noel Jinguli Images | Aznan Johary 18
to run the dealership. Unlike a “recon” car dealership, every new strategy, technology, and software for BMW automobiles have to be implemented with immediate effect. However, I try to turn this challenge into a blessing. I’m sure if we managed this dealership as a used car outlet, we won’t have the strong guidelines and management strategies of an international marquee. B: What is your view on the local luxury car market? T: From my personal observation, drivers here prefer bigger cars, even when driving in the city. Plus, some need to use their cars on off-road trails for work. We want to spread awareness
that BMW Sports Activity Vehicles (SAV) are also capable of doing so. There’s always been the perception that luxury vehicles should be taken care of and “babied”, but it shouldn’t be that way, they’re more capable than people think. Plus our warranty program and after-sales service are one of the best in town. The market here is competitive as well. Local clients are very friendly, but they’re straightforward with what they want and have very high expectations when it comes to dealing with a big brand like BMW. B: Have you test-driven the cars you deal with? If so, which is your favourite? T: Yeah, but not all of them. Regarding which one’s my favourite, let’s just say each car has its own function and purpose. Need a fun car for the weekend or maybe something you can daily drive, with our range of vehicles, there’s a car available for your needs. For myself, I love the feel and control you get when driving a manual car. It’s just an exciting feeling to have when you’re out on the road. B: Since your dealership carries hybrids as well, what are your thoughts on them? T: They are a great change of pace for our buyers. The hybrids offer new advancements in technology. Not everyone is used to them at first, but buyers are warming up to the idea and are looking forward to using them. The prices between hybrids and their fossil fuel counterparts are competitive as well, but of course, hybrids are much better for the environment. The issues of charging stations are just minor concerns, but we are trying
our best to implement more of them around the city. We’ll see how it goes, hybrids are selling really well, so we hope more charging stations can be set up when the Government sees more hybrids are on the road. B: What are your plans for the future? T: Reaching our targets as a team is obvious. I think we can do it. I am happy and pleased that our team is very energetic and passionate about what they’re doing. Of course, the plan is to keep succeeding. As a woman in a male-dominated industry, I can honestly say it isn’t impossible to do so. Most of my team consists of hardworking and determined women, and they have done a great job. I’d love to one day give women mechanics the opportunity to work with us in the future. B: Is there anything you’d like to add? T: I’m very grateful for the support I’ve received from my family, it means the world to me. I also implement a good family culture in the dealership as well. I believe it makes for a harmonious working environment when everyone is able to support each other.
FUN FACTS: Theresa played basketball in highschool and has competed in inter-school competitions. She also works on her own car when there are minor problems that need fixing. 19

family care in your car
K
eeping the family safe is important, especially now with the Corona virus around. It’s obvious we need to keep clean and sanitize everything we use, even our surroundings. However, there’s one space we often take for granted, one we’re in almost everyday - the interior of our cars. We need to step up our cleaning when it comes to our car interior. Every time we enter it, we unknowingly expose it to the environment we’ve been to, contaminating it in the process. Accidentally, we also expose our family when they get in. So how do we combat this? One company we discovered is Auto Leather and Showroom, along the Kepayan highway. They don’t use chemicals when sanitizing your car. Instead, they perform high temperature sanitizing to the interior that kills germs with a temperature of 120’c. They also attack other spots that are usually hard to reach, the air conditioning vents. Dust build up in these vents could cause allergic reactions to your skin, your nose and your lungs. You also don’t know what’s been hanging out in those vents. Your seats are also potential breeding grounds for germs and bacteria, so keeping them clean and sanitized is important. It can be a bit difficult to do it yourself, so letting professionals do what they do is advisable. However, you can take it to the next level by upgrading your seats with leather covers.
by Noel Jinguli Images | Adynnie Qhalisyah
20
This is what Auto Leather specializes in. They have a system in place where they have a database with most seat measurements based on the model of your car, without needing to physically measure your seats. It takes them 3 days to sew the leather together based on the measurements, with another 2 days of fitting them onto your seats. Any car seat can be upholstered, from the charming Kancil to the sexy Ferrari, they’ve done them all. Upholstering your seats comes with other benefits as well. First, it’s easier to clean compared to fabric seats. Just a few wipes and you’re done. Comfort is also improved as Auto Leather uses premium hides like calfskin, nappa, and even suede. The perception of leather being luxurious is also a plus. Though, the people at Auto Leather are trying to change that because they want everyone to know that leather seats are available for every car. Protecting the family doesn’t stop there. There are many more things we could do to ensure our family stays healthy. However, cleaning and sanitizing our car interior is a good start. We never know the dangers from unhygienic surroundings, especially from the one place we least expect.

Here are several ways to help ease the stress whether it is for the pandemic or other matters. Go for a ride while listening to some good music. If you were having a bad day during this pandemic, go grab your car keys and head out for a short ride! Choose any good music genre to listen to while driving which could help you relieve some of the tension. According to research, listening to music while driving tends to alleviate the stress that affects heart health. “We found that cardiac stress in the participants in our experiment was reduced by listening to music while they were driving,” says principal investigator Prof. Vitor Engrácia Valenti.

Why not spend time with nature to ease stress and worry. If you love to be surrounded by nature, try going for a hike at a spot away from the crowd. It can ease stress and anxiety especially when you’re viewing the beautiful scenery of nature and enjoy the fresh air. Finally, do your best to remain calm and attempt to do some physical activity, even if it’s just going for a social distancingappropriate walk around your neighbourhood. You’ll be surprised how such a simple walk could do some good to release stress. Just make sure to take some time out for yourself whenever you can. All of us deserve some ‘me time’ to be happier and away from stress.

Lower Body Muscular Endurance Workout
I
n conjunction with the Merdeka month, here is a simple 4 exercise combo to help build your lower body muscular endurance. Just like how a country is built on a strong foundation, let us bring our attention back to our base of support, the lower body.
Crossover Lunge / Curtsey Lunge: 4 Sets Set 1-10 Reps, Set 2-12 Reps, Set 3-14 Reps, Set 4-16 Reps The crossover/ curtsey lunge is a variation to the common lunge. Full Bodyweight Squat: 4 Sets Set 1-10 Reps, Set 2-12 Reps, Set 3-14 Reps, Set 4-16 Reps The good old squat is no stranger to everyone but it is undeniably one of the most effective workout for the glutes and lower body IF YOU DO IT RIGHT. Fly Steps: 4 Sets ( repeat for each side) Set 1-10 Reps, Set 2-12 Reps, Set 3-14 Reps, Set 4-16 Reps Let us soar high and proud like the Jalur Gemilang with the single leg exercise. EXECUTION • Drive your body up using the front leg. • Lift the back leg up and lean the body forward a little while keeping the core engaged and back neutral. • Spread your arms out and keep your balance.
Glute Bridges: 4 Sets Set 1-10 Reps, Set 2-12 Reps, Set 3-14 Reps, Set 4-16 Reps Before you’re done, let us give some extra attention to those glutes. SETUP • Lie facing up on the floor. • Bend your knees and bring your feet in just about one palm away from your hips. • Align the hip, knee, and feet in one line. • Place your arms by your side. EXECUTION • Lift your glutes up and squeeze at the top. • Avoid lifting the ribcage up to much, if your ribcage protrudes then you should relax your lower back slightly more and focus mainly on using your glutes during the lift.
Happy Merdeka month everyone! Be responsible, be safe and stay active.

Time for a road trip
Y
ou know what would be great to do after this pandemic? Finally going out with a bunch of friends and having fun! But not just any kind of normal hanging out, not going shopping or having brunch together. A real adventure. Yes. You should, absolutely gather your friends and head on out for a road trip! Now, I’m not talking about a day trip to the islands or down to Labuan for some pictures and shopping, but the kind where you must spend at least 1 night at your destination. So, the plan is to either drive the biggest car your friend group has, drive two cars or, rent a van so you guys have more than enough space to fit yourselves and luggage. Alright I know that the idea of sitting in a boring old van for such an exciting trip sounds kind of disappointing. Right? But I’m not talking about just any normal van, I’m talking about renting a dope vintage looking Volkswagen camper van! Now that sounds interesting! In fact, Kombi 4 Rent just so happens to have this service. Wouldn’t it be so cool to be able to look back and say you went on a road trip with some of your best mates? It’s all about the experience! When else would you have an excuse to rent a camper van? It might end up as one of your best stories yet!

Now, you’re probably wondering where could you possibly go in a camper van in Sabah? Honestly, there are so many places! A night in Kudat, then a night up at the highlands of Kundasang or Ranau. On the way back down on the third day, stop by Tamparuli for some white-water rafting! You could also drive all the way to Kota Belud for a relaxing day by the river! Honestly, it’s up to you where you want to go. It doesn’t really matter because I guarantee you, you’ll have a blast.
go through the drive-thru
D
rive-through or “drive-thru” is no new concept today. It’s been a few years now since the first drive-thru was established in Sabah. But did you know the first ever drive-thru in the world came in the United States almost 90 years ago? If you’ve been living under a rock, drive-thrus are usually found at restaurants. With them, you won’t need to get out of your car to go order inside. Just drive up to their window counter, order, pay, and you get your food. It just makes things a bit easier especially if you’re all comfy in your car. Before drive-thrus, there were drive-ins. First established in 1921, Kirby’s Pig Stand introduced the first drive-in to the
pop culture
people of California. Customers would park their cars in the lot of the restaurant as the servers, called carhops, come and take their orders. When the food was served, the customers would “dine-in” in their cars, or have it as takeaway. Then in 1931, the carhops were bypassed, hence the drive-thru was born. The most famous restaurant with drive-thrus is McDonalds. There are at least 3 McDonalds drive-thrus in and around Kota Kinabalu itself. Other than McDonalds, there’s also a Starbucks drive-thru in Sandakan, which is the first of its kind in Sabah. There’s even news that it’s coming to Kota Kinabalu soon. Big name restaurants aren’t the only ones implementing drivethrus though. There’s a small cafe in Penampang, called Pit Stop Cafe, that has a “Pau Drive Thru” for people on the go. Our government hospital now has drive-thru pharmacies to allow patients to take their prescriptions without waiting too long at the hospital. That’s just plain convenient if you hate waiting in line at the hospital. Drive-thrus are real life savers now in times when we need to socially distance ourselves. We don’t need to wait in line with people or even sit to dine-in with other restaurant goers. That’s just the F&B sector, who knows how it’ll evolve in the future, maybe we’ll even see drive-thru grocery stores or the reincarnation of the drive-in movie theatre.

the sixpack baker: packed with wholesome goodness
inding a cafe to unwind after a week’s worth of hectic schedule requires a bit of a checklist. For me, it would require three items: serene ambience; great company and wholesome food with affordable prices. Often than not, the best I get is two out of three, the third being the least checked on my list. Until recently, I was introduced to Kota Kinabalu’s first ever hidden cafe, nestled between Penampang-Kepayan, an above neighbour to its brother company FITM Borneo called “The Sixpack Baker.”
Aspiring to bridge the generation gap, Hazli and his mother experimented with a variety of recipes in order to maintain authenticity of our culture yet still acquiring the younger generation’s taste. In so, they concocted menus that offer a Sabahan fusion of mouth-watering appetizers, mains and desserts. The menu is simply made with the people’s health in mind. With carefully picked fresh ingredients, mindfulness to substitute artificial to organic flavoring and attention to the way it is cooked is what makes our experience wholesome.
Of course being a hidden cafe, a reservation must be made to get the entry passcode. There’s a bell right next to you if you haven’t made any reservations but where is the fun in that? As you enter the place you are welcomed by a delicious aroma of food being prepared, a romantic lighting and a wonderful view of the workshop-like kitchen where you can see none other than FITM Borneo manager, Hazli Bojili working alongside his mother. This ‘jack of all trades’ man is the brains behind this hidden cafe and YES - the name fits.
We started off with my topmost favorite dish, the Sada Gipan Tuhau Pizza. The combination of homemade tomato puree with the sambal tuhau flavor just outbursts in one crunchy bite! With the fresh plump prawn and tuna shreds, it adds as a bonus with the right amount of saltiness from the fresh seafood and a tinge of sweet and sour from the puree. I could eat this for the entire day!

Next was the Cream of Mushroom Soup served with freshly baked bread - but do you want to know the Kadazan twist to this soup? The mushroom used is known to Sabahans as KODOP! Honestly, when it comes to mushroom soup, I get very particular but man, dipping their freshly baked protein bread into the thick yet smooth soup is like a match made in heaven. Giving you that earthy and fulfilling taste that leaves you sipping for more. Pairs well with the pizza too!
If you are not a fan of salad, you should definitely try Garden Herb Salad. This salad is served in a bowl and consists of garden picked dill, holy basil, ulam raja and pegaga seasoned with calamansi. Personally, I am not for one fond for salad, but this salad I surely do not mind ordering a couple times more. It is part of the newly introduced menu called “Hello Sixpack Menu”, a menu catered to those who are opting for healthier dishes. Under this menu, they also serve Salmon Bouquet, Sixpack Baker Tuna Egg Toast, and Nambatan pie “Fishermans Pie” which unfortunately, was unavailable during our visit. The highlight from this menu is the 1:2 Garden Seafood Fried Rice. Why? Well, simply because you will not be disappointed with the amount of meaty bits that comes in the fried rice. A stir fried rice with fresh local herbs, topped with a generous amount of fresh tuna, squid and prawn accompanied with omelette. Hazli specially named this dish as mentioned to tell his customers it is a ratio of 1:2 Carbs:Protein, a controlled portion of rice with a generous amount of meaty goodness. For a sweeter yet healthy drink is the Batak Smoothie. A blend of local banana, strawberries, chia seeds, milk and whey

powder. This smoothie is like waffles in a drink after one sip. The best part? It did not leave me any guilt because it is freshly made and not those powder-blended ones that we’re used to.

We ended the feast with desserts like Beetroot Fudge Cake, Black Sesame Cake, Mango Coconut Chia Pudding and Going Bambangan tart. Personal favourite? The Going Bambangan Tart, this one really hit a home run for me with its flaky tart combined with the perfect balance of tartness and sweetness of the bambangan fillings. You might wonder, with this attentiveness to food preparation, the price might be pricey. Well I can assure you, everything on the menu is below RM 15. Hazli’s mission is to break the “healthy food is bland and expensive” stereotype in our society and encourage people to eat and live healthy.
