Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow. -Melody Beattie

Food for Soul Magazine (Texas Tornado) as some have called me reside in, Texas, with my Hubby, Kirby and our two youngest, Amanda and Cody. Being a former news reporter sparked a great desire in me to continue writing and researching, but with a purpose to help others. It is my passion. Being a wife, and mom of six ages 29-11 has had its challenges, but it has taught me much along the journey. I utilize the experience to coach others to ignite a passion for positive change nutritionally, physically, but most of all, spiritually. I spend much time on projects to boost morale, and a lot of time in the kitchen creating new dishes. Currently, I am a busy homeschooler, and Grandmother of two, and when I’m not wrapped up with family or community…spend many hours working on my God-given passion, which is pen to paper with a purpose!

Seasons of Change Seasons come and go, and depending

“In seed time learn, in harvest teach, in winter enjoy. -William Blake

on your climate, you might experience a longer one than usual. The same goes for our spiritual seasons. You might be experiencing times where you live on a mountain top, and then suddenly here comes a strong wind of change to knock you to the valley. Life has many seasons. Just as the leaves change colors in fall, flowers fade, and branches become bare, some situations and relationships diminish. Yet, what happens when winter begins to withdraw its bitter sting? Seedlings begin to emerge, sprouting hope, life, and beauty as spring awakes with a breath of sweet change. We have to prepare for those seasons when life thunders in unexpected circumstances. To do so would be to put on the whole armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18), as our fight is not against flesh and blood, but a spiritual warfare. We cannot always predict the weather, especially if you live in Texas! It's freezing one day, and a sauna the next. However, in preparation for these seasons of change by planting the seed of God's word in you, harvesting what's learned, putting to action knowledge, you can survive the seasons. May God bless you during yours.

They really need this book. OK. Fine. WE really need this book!” — Your friend and mine, Bob Smiley. Its tagline is “What’s in it for me?” It has caused families to break up, portfolios to bankrupt, and individuals to self-destruct. The addiction? The ME Addiction. It’s that ingrained reaction to think of self-first and others later. Sometimes much later. It’s the idea that having it my way is the best way. Believing that has elevated our egos, sent us into hiding, broken our community, surfaced anxiety, and saturated us with stress. But “having it my way” wasn’t the original way. At the beginning, the first response was to look to God. The better question was, “What’s in it for him?” ME Addiction will help you diagnose the human condition and take steps to a better life. A life that breaks free from the oldest addiction known to humans and begins to live a revolutionary life. The life for which you were created.

Families Feeding Families is organized by business people and community volunteers. The goal of the group is to organize a meal for the day before Thanksgiving that will feed people in need. They serve those that need a hot meal, companionship, prayer, or perhaps just a hug! They serve a traditional Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings. During the event they also offer free haircuts and activities for the children. They encourage families to work together in volunteering for this awe-inspiring experience. This organization partners with Tomball, Magnolia and Waller groups in Texas to provide Thanksgiving meals in their local communities. They put God's love into action by serving these individuals and families in need. In 2011 a local businessman, Rick Gatewood, was inspired to help those in our area during Thanksgiving. Rick contacted several other people in the area about assisting with this worthy project. Other local people, businesses, churches and schools quickly got involved and realized there was a great need right there in their community. On November 23, 2011, the first Families Feeding Families event took place at ChristBridge Fellowship Church in Tomball, Texas. Over 500 meals were served to those that attended. Meals were taken to local nursing homes and volunteers ate with the attendees. Free haircuts, face painting, and children’s activities combined with goodie bags were a big hit! The second Families Feeding Families occurred on November 21, 2012 which took place at the same location. That time 800 people were served on site the traditional Thanksgiving meal, and 200 more meals were donated to Waller Assistance and Restorations Ministries. More free haircuts were done and the number of goodie bags available expanded. More children’s activities were offered and again face painting was a huge hit. The number of volunteers also grew significantly. Families came out to volunteer together. Local school and civic groups came out as part of their community service. A homeless man walked miles to attend and a mentoring relationship was established with one of our volunteers.

5

The 2013 event was the third annual one and it took place on November 27th. Approximately 1,000 people were served the traditional Thanksgiving meal with all of the trimmings. More haircuts were given and the children loved the activities. Meals were also taken to nursing homes and shut-ins. Volunteers drove to the homeless to pass out meals. More churches got involved and again the number of volunteers grew. Here it is 2014, and the organization is still going strong! There were nearly 400 volunteers that came to feed 1,100 people November 26, and my children and I, had the honor of being a part of it for the first time and hopefully not our last. It was amazing to see the overflow of love and thanksgiving resounding throughout the room. The event was awesome! I ran across two volunteers, Missy Ruhmann and Pat Davis who shared their joyful experience in being a part of this event. One had assisted for her very first time, and the other was on his seventh year. You could see the expression of unmistakable love of God in their hearts as they interacted with those they served. I had the pleasure of interviewing a guest who shared her hardship story. She said, that this was her third time to attend with her children. She was a single mother dealing with relocation, job loss, a misplaced home, autistic child, and barely getting by. She stated how this event made it possible for her children and her to escape the troubled circumstances for a day. For a day…they could play with other children on common ground. For a day…they could feel like a winner at games. For a day…they would not have to ask if there is enough money to buy candy. For a day…they could enjoy all the helpings they wanted without worrying who was going to pay for it. For a day…they got to experience the love and a Thanksgiving with volunteers expressing what God had in mind all along, a nonjudgmental, inviting, loving environment. You can make a difference too! Become a part of something great this year by volunteering or donating. Get your whole family involved! Many times you find while blessing others, you in turn end up the one blessed beyond measure. -Brenda A. Graff

Chicken Soup for Breakfast? Why chicken soup for breakfast? Not only does its soothing and savory properties enhance your morning, but the healing elements boost anyone suffering with immune deficiencies. The ingredients in the process of cooking, contain healing properties to ward off and fight against infection, viruses, and may even stop the growth or spread of cancer. It immediately detoxes your body, while putting in nutrients to help metabolize foods ingested for the rest of the day. It also speeds up healing. The bone marrow from slow cooking a whole chicken is phenomenal with its beneficial gelatin, and amino acid components which help to rebuild blood cells, and promote liver health. The amino acid glycine, a much needed ingredient to detoxify is what does the trick. Bone broth is loaded with glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) which helps with joint health. GAGs we get from bone broth are resistant to digestion and are absorbed in their intact form. GAGs like hormones, are stimulating cells called fibroblasts which lay down collagen in the joints, tendons, ligaments, and even the arteries. Bone broth also enhances, hair, skin, and nails by the collagen properties. It heals your gut! Its gelatin properties help with gastrointestinal issues, such as gluten intolerance, acid reflux, food sensitivities, leaky gut, and Crohn’s disease. If that isn’t enough reason to put this recipe in your New Year’s Resolution, then at least add it to your to-do’s to try this year! Grandma knew what she was talking about.

Soul Adhesions By: Nancy McDade Have you ever watched a movie in which men are sitting around comparing scars? I can recall a scene from the old "Jaws" movie in which the fishermen were on a boat around a table comparing scars and sharing their war stories. Usually people can easily recall the exact event that caused a scar. For me, I have about a six inch scar on my upper abdomen. This scar tells the story of when I had two emergency surgeries for a ruptured appendix, gangrenous gallbladder, and an ischemic bowel all within three days. This scar is a reminder of the healing power of God who kept me alive when the odds were not in my favor. While external scars are obvious, what about the scars that we cannot see, the internal scars? These are the scars that are not so apparent to those around us. These are the deep-rooted, hidden, dark places inside. These are the scars that we may not even know are there. We know that something inside hurts, but we don’t know why it does, because we cannot see it. Adhesions work that way. An adhesion is when a scar occurs internally and causes an abnormal union between membranes. This causes tissue to connect to other tissue where it’s not supposed to connect. Although adhesions form a protective barrier around damaged tissue, they also render the tissue inflexible. Can you imagine trying to bend your knee and having it bound by a connection to another tissue that forces it not to bend? This lack of flexibility leads to pain and dysfunction. Much like the "immobile knee" life events can cause internal scars or what I will call "soul adhesions." These events can paralyze us if left alone and not dealt with. Maybe this was neglect or abandonment as a small child, loss of a loved one, divorce, physical or verbal abuse, addiction, lack of encouragement, poverty or being the child who was always picked on. No matter what the cause, soul adhesions are caused by injury. As a result, we form protective barriers. If we are not careful the adhesions or barriers can prevent us from being what God has called us to be. We can become crippled by fear, anger, resentment, jealousy or guilt. 8

The thing that caused injury to our soul can render us helpless, hopeless, and dysfunctional. We can become rigid and inflexible. Although the tissue has a strong barrier around the damaged part, it becomes so hardened that it cannot function properly. Perhaps we all have put up barriers around our hearts because of past injuries. We think the barrier will protect us but the end result is crippling. We may not even do it on purpose, but it is still there. No matter if the barrier that holds the soul captive is fear, anger, addiction, hopelessness or guilt, God can remove it. Matter of fact, He is the "Great Physician." The first part healing internal scar is to recognize that it is there. Sometimes we Photo by B. Graff in – Wind Creek, an AL ‘08 can "sweep things under the rug" in hopes that it will disappear. Unfortunately, when we lift the rug, the trash is still there. If we ask God, He will "lift the rug” and sweep out the dirt. He knows the scars are there, why not let Him heal them? Just as a surgeon can remove adhesions, God can remove "soul adhesions." He does not want us bound by internal scars. The Bible says in, Isaiah 61:1 "The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek, he hath sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and opening of the prison to them that are bound." Now that’s something to get excited about. I want to experience every single moment of joy that God has for me. Jesus suffered way too much for me to be bound up and captive. Today ask Him to reveal the internal scars in your life and to set you free. He is ready, willing and more than able to remove the "soul adhesions" in your life.

Searching for Fido! -Harry Stoorza, Ph.D Life-saving encouragement to adopting a shelter pet. Ready to add a furry friend to your family? Dr. Harry Stoorza, an expert in bringing companion animals into loving homes, shares his dogmatic knowledge in finding your perfect pet from a shelter or rescue group. When adding a pet to your family, you have two choices- adopt or purchase. Pet adoption is on the rise. According to the Shelter Pet Project, 29% of dogs and 33% of cats are adopted from shelters and rescue groups each year. In Houston, there are over two hundred thousand pets in shelters and rescue groups waiting to meet you! Babbs is a brown and very tall dachshund. She was in a crate being unloaded for an adoption event. As one of the helpers was pulling her out, their eyes met and it was love at first sight. Throughout the day, they became a loving family. The weekender confirmed the adoption and now she is a part of a great, young family. Adopting is always the better choice and here’s why: 1. Famous people do it! Celebrities like Emma Stone, Kristin Bell, George Clooney and dozens more adopt from a shelter. It’s hip and people are proud to tell you that Fido came from a shelter. Just look at who is showing off their shelter pets! www.pinterest.com/haldermania/celebrities-who-have-adopted-shelter-dogs/. 2. Huge selections! Shelters and rescue groups have pets of all sizes, shapes and ages. The American Human Society estimates that one out of four shelter animals is pure bred. You can easily find the perfect breed, color, gender or temperament. Shelters are a cafeteria of pet choices. 3. Convenience! There are thousands of nonprofit shelters or pet rescue groups, so one is nearby. “Pet shelters in Houston, Texas area” produced over 81,000 results on Google. Searching by zip codes will narrow your search. 4. It’s the deal of the decade! Most adoption fees start at $50 and average around $125. This usually includes spay or neutering, vaccinations, medical records and microchips. Most even includes training of the dog and the new family! 5. Adopting creates LOVE! Many shelter pets have spent weeks in a loving foster home. They have learned how to be a great part of your family. Plus, how to walk on a leash, stay off the furniture and are house trained. 6. Try before you adopt! Most places let you get to know the prospective new family member with a sleepover or a weekender. Watching your pet interact with your family in your space will help make a better adoption, stronger bond and an easier transition for everyone. 7. You save two lives! When a shelter pet is adopted, their life is saved! Now there is room for another pet to be saved. Most people never have the opportunity to save a life, but your family has saved at least two. 10

HEALTH BENEFITS OF BEING A PET OWNER The American Heart Association has linked the ownership of pets, especially dogs, with a reduced risk for heart disease and greater longevity. Studies have also found that:  Pet owners are less likely to suffer depression.  People with pets usually have lower blood pressure in stressful situations.  Playing with a pet can elevate levels of serotonin and dopamine, which calm and relax.  Pet owners have lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels.  Heart attack patients with pets survive longer.  Pet owners over age 65 make 30 percent fewer visits to their doctors.  Pets can help ease anxiety.  Pets can help healthy aging by supplementing a lost loved one or those that have moved away.  Taking care of an animal can also provide a sense of self-worth.  Choosing to adopt an animal from a shelter, especially an older dog or cat, can add to the sense of fulfillment, knowing that you’ve provided a home to a pet that may otherwise have been euthanized.  Pets encourage playfulness, laughter, and exercise, which can help boost your immune system and increase your energy.  Research at the University of California at Davis School of Veterinary Medicine concluded that Alzheimer's patients suffer less stress and have fewer anxious outbursts if there is a pet in the home.  Children who grow up with pets have less risk of allergies and asthma.  They learn responsibility, compassion, and empathy.  They provide a sense of security in children easing separation anxiety.  Studies have also shown that pets can help calm hyperactive or overly aggressive kids.  Some children with autism or other learning difficulties are better able to interact with pets than people.  Pets can help children with learning disabilities by learning to regulate stress and calm themselves.  Playing and exercising with a pet can help a child with learning disorders stay alert and attentive throughout the day. http://www.helpguide.org/articles/emotional-health/the-health-benefits-of-pets.htm

Got Mussels? It does the body good‌ Mussels are an extremely nutrient based seafood choice. They are very low in calories and fat, yet rich in protein and contain many micronutrient benefits with vitamins and minerals. Mussels are a rich source of many essential vitamins and minerals, such as the B vitamins, vitamin C and folate; and the minerals iron, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium and zinc. They outweigh other sources when it comes to vitamin B-12, selenium and manganese. A 3-oz. portion of cooked mussel meat provides higher than average 20.4 mcg of vitamin B-12, which is approximately 340 % of the recommended daily value. Vitamin B12 is essential for the nervous system, the formation of red blood cells and proper growth. The same amount meets 108% of the DV for selenium and 288% for manganese. Selenium is crucial for the immune system and supporting the thyroid gland. Manganese is important for bone health and energy metabolism. Mussels are high in protein containing nearly the same as red meat, but without the high saturated fat and calorie content. WEIGHT MANAGEMENT AND HEART HEALTH Mussels contain considerable amounts of omega-3. A 3-oz. serving of cooked mussels provides approximately 730 mg of omega-3 fatty acids. According to the American Heart Association, omega-3 fatty acids from fish are beneficial for those who have, or at a risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Omega-3 fatty acids help decrease triglyceride and slow growth rate of plaque in the arteries. Mussels are great for libido! The high protein and manganese which speeds up metabolism results in high energy, vitality, and circulation. However, due to the high sodium content, you might want to watch consuming other sodium sources throughout the day, and limit intake to no more then 6-12. You can find frozen pre-cooked mussels at most grocers for less than $2 for 1 lb., which makes for a quick, nutritional meal. A word of caution, never eat a mussel that does not open during cooking process, and if you purchase raw, do not consume mussels that are open prior to cooking. There are many ways to prepare mussels. Preparation is fairly simple and quick. There are many recipes online but my most recent crave is what my husband put together one night. It was unbelievably delicious! Here is the recipe to the right.

“We make a living by what we get.

C.B. Graff Foodforsoulmagazine.com 2014© Cody B. Graff - codybgraff@foodforsoulmagazine.com

We make a life by what we give.” - Winston Churchill

Experiments have been conducted in which a group of people are given money, and half of them are required to spend it on themselves while half are required to spend it on other people. Contrary to their own expectations, the half who spent the money on others consistently got more pleasure out of the experience than their nonselfless colleagues. A 2010 study considered survey data from 136 countries to see whether people who answered yes to the question "Have you donated money to charity in the last month?" were happier overall. A clear correlation was found In 122 of the countries; in fact, on average it was found that donating to charity had a similar impact on happiness to household income doubling! Giving makes us feel happy. A 2008 study by Harvard Business School professor Michael Norton and colleagues found that giving money to someone else lifted participants’ happiness more that spending it on themselves (despite participants’ prediction that spending on themselves would make them happier). Happiness expert Sonja Lyubomirsky, a professor of psychology at the University of California, Riverside, saw similar results when she asked people to perform five acts of kindness each week for six weeks. These good feelings are reflected in our biology. In a 2006 study, Jorge Moll and colleagues at the National Institutes of Health found that when people give to charities, it activates regions of the brain associated with pleasure, social connection, and trust, creating a “warm glow” effect. Scientists also believe that unselfish behavior releases endorphins in the brain, producing the positive feeling known as the “helper’s high.” Giving is good for our health. A wide range of research has linked different forms of generosity to better health, even among the sick and elderly. In his book “Why Good Things Happen to Good People”, Stephen Post, a professor of preventative medicine at Stony Brook University, reports that giving to others has been shown to increase health benefits in people with chronic illness, including HIV and multiple sclerosis. Giving promotes cooperation and social connection. When you give, you’re more likely to get back: Several studies, including work by sociologists Brent Simpson and Robb Willer, have suggested that when you give to others, your generosity is likely to be rewarded by others down the line—sometimes by the person you gave to, sometimes by someone else. http://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/5_ways_giving_is_good_for_you#sthash.UMoIH4UH.dpuf https://www.givingwhatwecan.org/get-involved/giving-and-happiness

One evening in our backyard, my husband and I set out to BBQ. Off in the distance, I could hear a baby lamb crying out. This went on for at least a half hour. Hearing its cries echoing across the huge field that separated our property, distracted me to the point I became concerned. Was this little lamb caught in a fence? Is it hurt? Does it just need its mother? Is it hungry? Putting my hand to heart was concerned for this little one in distress and told my husband we have to do something! I nearly jumped over the bobbedwire fence to run across the farm to see what was wrong. With every cry I became more unsettled. It was at that moment that God spoke to me in such a way, tears filled my eyes. My husband looked up puzzled and asked, “What’s wrong?” I could hardly utter a word for a few moments. By this point the little lamb stopped crying completely. God reminded me of the parable where it is spoken, that He would leave a herd of sheep to find the one who went astray to keep it from perishing. This is how much our heavenly Father loves us so. Luke 15:1-7 All the tax collectors and sinners were approaching to listen to Him. 2 And the Pharisees and scribes were complaining, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them!” 3 So He told them this parable: 4 “What man among you, who has 100 sheep and loses one of them, does not leave the 99 in the open field and go after the lost one until he finds it? 5 When he has found it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders, 6 and coming home, he calls his friends and neighbors together, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, because I have found my lost sheep!’ 7 I tell you, in the same way, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over 99 righteous people who don’t need repentance.

Sometimes it seems that God has forgotten us? We feel distant or abandoned. Yet, He says that He will never forget us. Isaiah 49:15-16 “Can a woman forget her nursing child, or lack compassion for the child of her womb? Even if these forget, yet I will not forget you. 16 Look, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands; your walls are continually before Me. God reminded me that He sees our tears, and deep sorrow. He is watching over us as a good Shepherd would. El Roi is the God who sees us. Genesis 16:7 The Angel of the LORD found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur. Did you get that? He found her (Hagar), she wasn’t looking for Him. He found his little lamb, suffering in the midst of her circumstance. He lovingly found her through the tears, through the pain, and through the hopelessness she felt as she laid her son under a shrub to die. (Genesis 21) He goes above and beyond to find his little lambs. Often we think that because God has a whole universe to deal with that He can’t deal with our little issues. Quite the contrary…He knows, He sees, He cares, He loves, and He is right there. He is there in the midnight hour when your mind races with failure or regret. He is there when your world is crumbling. Genesis 16:9-11 Then the Angel of the LORD said to her, “You must go back to your mistress and submit to her mistreatment.” 10 The Angel of the LORD also said to her, “I will greatly multiply your offspring, and they will be too many to count.” 11 Then the Angel of the LORD said to her: You have conceived and will have a son. You will name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard your cry of affliction. 18

Often we wish for our Shepard to watch over us? Especially in trying times. Yet we are so blinded by the tears we are unable to see Him in our circumstance. We cry out over and over to Him and he says, “I’m here, right here little lamb, I see you…just follow my voice if you can’t see your way through”. John 10:3 The doorkeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. I think of the infamous song written by Gershwin.

Someone to Watch over Me There's a saying old, says that love is blind Still we're often told, "Seek and ye shall find" So I'm going to seek a certain lad I've had in mind Looking everywhere, haven't found him yet He's the big affair I cannot forget Only man I ever think of will regret I'd like to add his initials to my monogram Tell me where's the shepherd for this lost lamb

-John 10:11

There's a somebody I'm longing to see I hope that he turns out to be Someone to watch over me I'm a little lamb who's lost in a wood I know I could always be good To one who'll watch over me Although he may not be the man some girls think of As handsome to my heart he carries the key Won't you tell him please to put on some speed Follow my lead, oh how I need Someone to watch over me. EL ROI sees it all. And He is chasing after the little lost lambs so he can rejoice over them once their found. He knows each one by name which is inscribed on HIS hand, you can never stray too far. He will find you, even if it means running through a thorn-bush of bobbed-wire. He’s already proven that when He took the crown of thorns, splinters and nails climbing His way to the cross for all His lost sheep. –Brenda Graff Food for Soul assumes no responsibility for the relevance, accuracy, completeness or quality of the information provided in this magazine or on the website. We are a

forgetful people.

We need storytellers. We need someone to lay the drama of God’s love before us. We need to be reminded of the uncommon grace of God. -William R. White
