After two years of uncertainty in the wedding world, it’s safe to say weddings are back – and wow, are they joyful! My inbox and social media feed have never been so full of incredible weddings and the happiness is almost palpable in every photo. It’s been a long wait for some – and there’s a definite sense of couples grabbing life, cherishing love and really savouring the togetherness a wedding day brings. We’ve noticed other changes, too. Weddings are growing ever more personalised, guest experience is front and centre, the rulebook is well and truly being thrown out – and sustainability is key. Sustainability and a deep appreciation of our staggering landscape here in Cornwall is a recurring theme throughout these pages. Our bridal fashion story, Dream a Little Dream, sets the nature-loving mood, showcasing ethereal dresses with dreamily delicate detail amidst the rhododendrons and leafy nooks of the gardens at Treseren, an intimate wedding venue close to the north coast.

THE ART OF REPORTAGE Never underestimate the importance of your wedding photographer. Not only do you want them to produce the kind of images you’ll be poring over for decades to come, but you’ll also want to feel comfortable in their company as they shadow you – and your guests – throughout the day. Multiple award-winning photographer Alan Law prides himself on his unobtrusive approach courtesy of totally silent cameras (no shutter noise!) and subtle blending-into-the-background ability. Creatively capturing your day as it happens with reportage-style photography, you won’t be constantly called upon for posed photo shoots (unless you request it) and asked to abandon your guests or celebrations by stopping and smiling for the camera. Instead, Alan will quietly mingle with you and your guests to reveal the tender moments and characters of your day to stunning effect, creating an album that reflects you, your love story, and all the minutiae of your day with timeless beauty. Book a consultation to begin the process of building a package to suit your requirements, including full event coverage, individually edited images, an extensive gallery of full resolution images and a private gallery to share with family and friends – all of which allows you to switch off and relax in the knowledge that spectacular wedding photos are but a few (silent) clicks away.

LOVE AT THE GATE

A hidden sanctuary on Cornwall’s south coast, The Gate presents a picturesque setting to marry, make merry and spend a cherished few days savouring your newly married status alongside the fresh Cornish air, staggering views and luxurious facilities of a boutique hotel. Located amidst a patchwork of fields between the harbour town of Looe and picturesque fishing village of Polperro, The Gate is perfectly positioned to offer you and your guests a secluded coastal-meets-country retreat tantalisingly close to the sands of Talland Bay. Offering stylish self-catering studios and rooms for families and couples alongside a shepherd’s hut and apartment, the accommodation blends stunning interiors with indulgent extras for a stay full of comfort and relaxation. Expect everything from roll-top baths, king-sized beds and fully equipped kitchens to rolling country views, luxury linens and private balconies with outdoor baths as you sink into your surrounds both inside and out. U Got The Love Photography

Available for intimate weddings to large-scale celebrations for up to 150, the exclusive-use venue offers a choice of three idyllic settings for ceremonies and a stretch tent in the garden for al fresco dining before sweeping views across the surrounding countryside. There’s also a newly renovated reception hall for sit-down feasting and dancing the night away. With accommodation on-site for 24 and a range of further options nearby, you can look forward to a private party in this oh-so special setting. From garden vows and starlit moments around the firepit to dancing beneath the stars and a blissful soak in the outdoor bath, the dreamiest of days is guaranteed. thegatecornwall.com

WORDS OF LOVE…

“Love is a friendship set to music.” Joseph Campbell

A GEORGIAN GEM The Wed team had the fortune to spend a balmy day in May shooting our bridal fashion story, Dream A Little Dream, in the gardens of Treseren. From paths meandering amidst vibrant rhododendrons and camellias, a spacious lawn for vows beneath the 200-year-old walnut tree and a south-facing terrace, it is a secluded and incredibly picturesque setting for an al fresco wedding. Inside, Joe Burford Photography

the elegantly styled rooms of the Georgian house offer a sublime canvas for indoor ceremonies, receptions and relaxed gatherings. Perfect for an intimate destination wedding, you can enjoy a three-day house party for your nearest and dearest in complete privacy here. There’s accommodation for 12 and the latest addition, Loveday’s, is one of the many draws of a stay in this welcoming and characterful setting. With its vintage furnishings and gold leaf ceiling, the new cocktail bar is a chic spot to enjoy cocktails inspired by Treseren’s history (the former mine captain owner is thought to have been the inspiration for Winston Graham’s Captain Ross Poldark) – we loved the Poldark ‘n’ Stormy and Tin Miner’s Daughter.

A selection of dresses by another rising British star of bridal fashion, Kate Fearnley, will also soon be available at the boutique. Relaxed yet luxurious, the romantic gowns feature fashion-forward silhouettes enhanced with hand-finished embroidery and 3D embellishment. S ’ T A WH R U O Y L A D BRI ? E L STY Whether it’s fashionforward or relaxed romance, find a dress that truly reflects who you are for your alleyes-on-you moment words Hannah May Fashion is more than fabric: what you wear impacts on how you feel, how you carry yourself and how you interact with the world. And when it comes to the most important piece of clothing you’ll ever wear – your bridal gown – your choice will determine how you feel throughout your wedding day. Today’s bridalwear is all about embracing individualism, offering fashion-forward designs that can be styled to ensure you feel like yourself while being on-trend. And the beauty is that you don’t have to confine yourself to just one look. The latest collections offer everything from timeless wonders with modern appeal to statement frocks and fabulously fluid fashion in the form of detachable, transformational and custom-made elements begging to be reworn time and time again.

Fashion-forward Attention-grabbing styles are all part of the maximalist movement currently taking wedding world by storm. Whether you’re a fan of the flamboyant or prefer haute couture, there’s an abundance of styles to pore over. Anything voluminous or with an ‘80s flavour including supersized (detachable) puff sleeves, giant bows, flounces and cascades, big skirts and dramatic trains are all gracing the runways,

oozing high-octane romance with voguish edge. Elysian Bridal, St Ives Bridal Boutique

Layers of mixed materials and detailing add to the multidimensional essence of the ‘more is more’ fashionista’s wedding wardrobe, including textured 3D elements, dramatic drapery and sculptural silhouettes. Then there’s embellishment in the form of crystal-encrusted gowns, rhinestone embroideries, sequins, shimmering beadwork and head-to-toe floral prints alongside shocks of colour and black accents. Meanwhile, there’s nothing quite like a LWD (little white dress) to steal the spotlight, with the latest micro minis

causing quite the sartorial stir.

GAIA Bridal, Bliss Bridal Gowns

Brides with a penchant for vintage and glamour-chic styles will find an assortment of gowns to pick from, merging modern design features with classic cuts and flattering silhouettes. From paredback and perfectly fitting to plain styles begging for customisation with an oversized back bow, light-as-air overskirt, floral belt or mock neck lace top – classic meets contemporary to showstopping effect. Minimalism continues its stronghold over fashion houses, with sharp tailoring, bridal suits and impeccable cuts all contributing to the clean aesthetic. Silhouette-wise, slinky and body-con styles such as sheaths, fitted mermaids, and fit-and-flares all accentuate the timeless femininity of the hourglass, with A-lines and pleated styles adding extra volume and shape. Millie Grace, Bridal Gossip

Ballgowns are back with aplomb, ranging from elegant satin Mikado dresses to tiered, tulip and princess skirts, while the surge in demand for Regency wear sees empire gowns as one of the most-wanted frocks of the moment for brides seeking a traditional yet on-trend look. Want to embellish? Pearl detailing is de rigueur everywhere from the bodice to the veil, shoes and jewellery; or if you wish to inject some colour – blue is back with a beautiful vengeance.

Relaxed Romance

True Bride, Coastal Bridal

Kate Fearnley, St Ives Bridal Boutique

Relaxed styles naturally assert an air of romance, with silhouettes, fabrics, and design features all falling on the looser side for a breezy and more laidback bridal look. Free-spirited fashions exude a sense of cool and carefree style and gravitate toward fabulously functional pieces softened by whimsical details. Think sheer features, cut-outs and floral accents alongside nouveau laces and the softest tulles, chiffons

Kelsey Rose, Bridal Gossip

and crepes for the most swoon-worthy of ensembles. Playful meets practical with pockets, jackets, jumpsuits and shorter, dance-ready hemlines; and for brides seeking something a little more sexy, there’s plenty of thigh-high splits, corsetry, deep plunging necklines and skin-baring styles (backless bodices, flossing, crop tops) to pick from. Meanwhile, separates and two-pieces are the ultimate in relaxed bridal wear, allowing you to mix and match your favourite items (and incorporate a sneaky dress change amongst proceedings) to curate an individual look, with detachable pieces such as sleeves, overskirts, collars, belts, trains and sweeping capes all having the same spectacularly transformational effect.

BOHO

style | DRESSES | Rebecca Ingram, Bliss Bridal Gowns

Boho If a nod to nature with an effortless, carefree vibe is something that piques your stylistic interest, then channel your inner bohème with the latest ethereal confections. A blossoming of blooms via floral lace and appliqués, ditsy florals, 3D buds and botanical detailing including colourful floral prints sees the garden come to life through pretty-as-a-picture bridal wear. Flowing skirts in featherlight and floaty fabrics (georgette, chiffon, tulle and organza) epitomise modern boho, which has also received a retro twist through glam ‘70s-inspired silhouettes and ‘20s flapper style drop waists. Though cottagecore designs ooze understated pastoral style, as ever – it’s all in the details. Add feathers, fringing, a hint of sparkle, and ocean-inspired detailing such as intricate, seaweed-esque embellishment (set to be one of 2023’s forerunners), scalloped edge laces and blue and green tinges for majestic boho-meets-beach style.

feature | WHEN THE PARTY’S OVER

Look into sending some photographs to your favourite wedding magazine or blog, and if your shots fit into their real wedding sections, you may soon see yourselves published online or in print. Then you’ll be able to relive the day all over again! Talking of photographs, you have probably been posting wedding images on social media. Throwbacks are a great way of keeping memories alive. But if posting images of the big day is making you miss the planning even more, perhaps try to mix your posts of wedding throwbacks with more

“Try not to get hung up on what you’re missing and enjoy this time in your newly-wed bubble”

recent offerings like a new activity you’ve taken up or simply images of you both enjoying married life.

LOOK ELSEWHERE If you’re craving the organising and missing the feelgood factor of planning a wedding, try throwing yourself into something equally as time-consuming and even more worthwhile such as a charity cause. Organise a charity bike ride or sponsored walk with friends and family. You can even add decorations for the finish line or costumes… Hey, you can even throw a big party afterwards and, as we all know, that takes some planning! If any of your friends and family are tying the knot, try to carefully navigate the landscape and see if you can be of help with their planning. “Advice from other brides is invaluable to those planning their wedding and you will have learnt so much from your own experience,” says Jenny. “There are also lots of forums and wedding planning groups online you could join.” You can also make it easier to share your wedding inspiration. “If you wanted to share your wedding ideas and styling with the world, make your Pinterest board public for others to see. You could also add some of your own wedding photos in there to help inspire other brides,” advises Jenny.

BE INSPIRED If you jet straight off on honeymoon, you won’t even think about wedding planning while you’re exploring your chosen landscape, although you might find the slump back to earth from the dizzy heights of a back-to-back wedding and honeymoon even harder when you return. If so, try to bring something back from honeymoon, whether it’s a love of cooking, an interest in a new species of wildlife or simply a love of walking. You can then try to gently swap silk, lace and tulle for a new obsession! And finally, enjoy this time together. “The first few months as a newly-married couple are so special,” says Jenny. Make the most of this precious time by adding elements of fun and joy into everyday life, whether it’s taking a day trip, enjoying a special dinner at home or singing along to a new playlist together while you do your household chores; this will help set the scene for staying connected throughout your marriage. “Try not to get hung up on what you’re missing and enjoy this time in your newly-wed bubble,” concludes Jenny.

Turn inland from Cornwall’s staggering seascapes and, in a tucked-away corner of the Lizard Peninsula, you’ll find the wooded valleys, pastures and open spaces of Trelowarren Estate which offers an atmospheric setting for this autumnal styled shoot. “Despite the rain, we shot against the moody backdrop and marshes of the venue’s unique bucolic landscape which offered a refreshing alternative from Cornwall’s popular seascapes,” explains photographer Sarah Porteus of Lyra & Moth. “The vibe was very rich and earthy but also romantic,” she continues of the autumnal scenes where the floral design captures the vivid hues of the season: shades of ochre, russet and warm yellow styled with abundant foliage. A striking floral installation beckons you into New Yard Restaurant at the heart of the estate. A charm-filled setting warmed by a log fire, rustic tables are dressed simply with natural textures, candles and flowers and ferns in earthenware pots and vintage bottles. Flanked by mini cakes topped with berries, a tiered cake styled with richly coloured florals and accents of gold leaf makes a striking focal point, while letterpress stationery echoes the atmosphere and colours of the surrounding landscape. With a love of nature and the changing seasons at its heart, sustainability was central to the shoot’s ethos. “We used lots of thrifted items to decorate, antique jewellery and slow fashion to appeal to eco-conscious brides and grooms,” explains Sarah. The sustainable fashions complete the enchanting picture: the groom wears a linen shirt and green suit while the bride looks ethereal against the barren canvas of mossy green, earthy brown and skeletal trees in a blue Cinderella dress, handcrafted in Cornwall.

A Cornish idyll surrounded by 26 acres of countryside, The Cornish Place offers a character-filled canvas for a laidback wedding with a dreamy bohemian vibe. “The rustic boho vibe is going nowhere anytime soon; it’s a timeless mood board that works perfectly in Cornish settings,” explains Sophie Walker-Sünderhauf of The Little Details by Sophie who coordinated and styled the shoot. “The shoot offers a twist on a sage wedding with an added rustic terracotta vibe.” Typifying the look, the handcrafted bridal gown is a bohemian dream with its angel sleeves, tassels and lace paired with dramatic earrings and jewels draped across the forehead. Styled with lanterns and dried flowers, the rustic climes of the candlelit woodshed, with its natural textures and whitewashed walls, is an atmospheric setting for an intimate ceremony. Spilling outside into a meadow speckled with wildflowers, a table dressed with washes of sage green, pops of terracotta and dried flowers makes an idyllic setting to relax and feast on delicious canapés and sweet delights amidst the murmur of birdsong and the Cornish breeze rustling the leaves.

From the lofty trees of the Lime Avenue to the dreamy clouds of the Wisteria Walk, Pentillie Castle & Estate makes an otherworldly setting for a styled shoot with a love of nature at its heart. “If every couple took an earth-friendly approach to their wedding day, the positive impact would be phenomenal,” says Danielle Donnelly of The Wed Hub, who styled the shoot. Every detail was selected with sustainability in mind: the food and flowers were sourced locally and organically, while a series of upcycled and recycled props add personality to the scene while minimising impact on the planet. The uplifting colour palette reflects the vibrance of the flower-filled setting. Grown just a short distance from the venue in Liskeard, the bridal bouquet from The Flower Mill Cornwall captures the wildly beautiful vibe of the shoot with its just-gathered aesthetic and vivid shades of pink, purple, blue and yellow. The colours echo the upcycled ceremony backdrop and the stationery, which is made from recycled card and prettified with vibrant blooms and butterflies. With its far-reaching views, the Old Tennis Lawn makes the perfect setting for a picnic. A wooden palette makes an ideal low-level table for the carnival of seasonal, locally sourced flavours; edible flowers add a pretty touch to the cocktails and handcrafted cushions are perfect for lying back and savouring those blissful newly married moments while watching the clouds slip by. The bride and groom’s fashion choices make an earth-friendly statement of their own, the hired tweed suit and the ethereal pre-owned gown proving sustainability doesn’t mean compromising on style.

your bar company is essential,” asserts Jo. “Have a chat with them to let them know what cocktails or spirits you both like so they can tailor a cocktail menu specific to what you and your guests will love.” From retro favourites with a modern spin to bubbly cocktails, bitter concoctions and non-alcoholic sips, there’s a dizzying choice of cocktails out there. To help you narrow down a crowd-pleasing selection for your menu, we’ve asked Jo to pick out some favourites for a modern wedding or, as she says: “Some which we have tried and tested and enjoyed so much that people keep coming back for more”.

Hurricane Invented in a pub in New Orleans during the second world war and made famous by the song It’s Five O’clock Somewhere, a hurricane is a long, fruity and super popular cocktail. “This is sunshine in a glass!” says Jo. “Rum-based with plenty of sweetness, it ticks a lot of boxes for a great cocktail experience and is a brilliant all-rounder for those who may be cocktail shy.”

Espresso martini A delicious pick-me-up, the espresso martini is fast becoming a key ingredient of a modern wedding and works particularly well after the meal to ward off the post-feasting slump. “It’s a classic but can be done so badly,” warns Jo. “When I go to a cocktail bar, the espresso martini is a good tester of how great their cocktails are. The key to this, again, is quality ingredients as, with only three ingredients, there’s not much to hide behind: you’ll need good vodka, real Kahlua and, most essential of all, awesome espresso.”

Elderflower collins The drinking usually begins soon after your guests arrive from the ceremony, so consider your welcome cocktail carefully and start with something to set the tone of your reception. “All our cocktails are a double measure of spirit but for a welcome drink we suggest you take it easy and offer something refreshing, light and fantastically delicious,” advises Jo. “Elderflower collins does this very well. If you’d prefer something bubbly, make it a bellini.”

Whisky sour Light and refreshing with delightful citrus notes, the whisky sour is another cocktail which is sure to wow the crowds. “At first, the word whisky may put people off, but hang on,” says Jo. “This is bourbon, our American friend with a sweeter finish than the Scotch whisky you may be familiar with. Tempered with lemon and sugar, it is much easier to drink than you would assume and, once tried, guests just can’t get enough.”

the great outdoors From vows in a flower-filled garden to a first dance on the sand, there’s nothing dreamier than an outdoor wedding. Here’s some inspiration for going al fresco words Hannah May

Verity Westcott Photography

Imagine taking your vows to the soundtrack of the sea or birdsong carrying through the treetops; schmoozing with your guests to a backdrop of woodland, clifftop or riverside; dining under open skies before dancing together under the stars... We can’t think of anything more blissful than an outdoor wedding. With last year’s announcement of the legalisation of outdoor civil wedding and partnership ceremonies in England for the first time (on approved premises) Thomas Frost Photography

alongside a powerful cultural shift toward everything outdoors – al fresco weddings have never been more popular, especially for couples wanting to create a unique day rich in wild romance and sensorial detail. Not only does the idea of place assume greater meaning, but a bespoke celebration is also guaranteed, since every detail can be individually designed at a personally picked location. You may wish to arrange a back garden wedding, host an open-air ceremony or plan an outdoor wedding from start to finish. Here’s some ideas to get you started.

The pre-ceremony gathering A get-together before the vows provides your guests with the perfect icebreaking prelude to your day, setting the scene and introducing each other while kick-starting the celebratory mood. Weekend weddings allow the couple to greet guests the day or evening before the main event, and can take the form of a relaxed afternoon picnic and garden games, excursion or activities, or evening supper. If you’ve hired a venue for the entire weekend, then take advantage of all the spaces available by hosting dinner or afternoon tea in your marquee, or evening drinks on the lawn or courtyard. If not, then consider booking a space nearby or decamping to a wild spot for an activity like open water swimming followed by a barbecue, or a coastal walk to a pub with a scenic beer garden. Breakfast on the wedding day can follow a similar vibe and, if the weather doesn’t play ball, bring the outdoors in with hampers packed with fresh foodstuffs topped with posies of wildflowers.

The ceremony Outdoor ceremonies are one of wedding world’s must-haves. And thanks to the recent legislation changes (with the government promising that reforms to religious ceremonies are to follow), couples can now officially tie the knot in a glorious variety of open-air spaces. regarding place should you dream of saying ‘I do’ with the sand between your toes or a river at your feet. Pick ‘your’ place such as your favourite country retreat, where you became engaged or went on your first date – or opt for a venue that allows designated parts or every stage of your day to take place outside in keeping with your vision. Incorporate the venue’s natural features into the ceremony: for example, add a sand ceremony to your beachside pagan wedding, gather at the lakeside or wed under the giant oak at your licensed venue, or encircle the blooming rose or herb garden for a sweetly scented outdoor ceremony.

If you have chosen an outdoor ceremony, the drinks reception can follow directly in the same area or slightly ‘off stage’ with an outdoor bar, mobile drinks and catering vans, canapés and live music whether it’s an acoustic band, singer or string quartet.

Be creative with the layout, seating, décor and refreshments, and incorporate the natural scenery as much as possible into your choices to accentuate the open-air aspect. You might create a garden-themed cocktail menu, hang rattan egg chairs and scatter swing seats, sun loungers, bamboo chairs, botanical print cushions and green velvet sofas (and bring the indoors out!).

The wedding breakfast There are so many outdoor wedding breakfast options. You could select banqueting tables for sharing platter feasts or formal seated dining, a smattering of food stations or street food vendors, or opt for a Thomas Frost Photography

barbecue or picnic for a wonderfully interactive vibe. Incorporate fresh, local and seasonal produce into your menus and consider the presentation to optimise your outdoor setting. Use botanical crockery and linens, adorn tabletops with an abundance of foliage and flowers, and pick earthy tones, natural materials and floral themed décor for everything from the table settings to the chair sashes.

The evening reception that you have to move indoors. Part of the joy of an outdoor wedding is embracing every natural nuance from the landscape to the light and staging your evening reception outdoors can provide a magical finale.

du jour), unique entertainment (think roaming acts, fire and glow performers, stilt walkers, live landscape artists and fireworks) and warming drinks (glühwein, coffee and liqueur, hot toddys, mulled cider) – you’ll be providing the most unforgettable endnote to your day. Arrange an awning, covered area or open-sided marquee complete with heaters and snug areas to keep guests warm. Outside, light firepits, scatter patio heaters and focus on lighting for extra ambience. Consider festoon and fairy lights alongside a range of candlelight (line paths with tea lights and surround seating areas with hurricane lamps), and fashion a gazebo or cushioned area slightly away from the action for a spot of stargazing.

The after-party Depending on your schedule and venue hire arrangements, why not extend the celebrations the next day and host an open-air brunch or lunch – or take your guests to a beautiful location for more al fresco fun?

THE PRAGMATICS

Make sure your outdoor wedding is as practical as it is pretty with these top tips Weatherproof Stock up on essentials for all weather scenarios with sunscreen, flip-flops, insect repellent, wellington boots and umbrellas. And, of course, make sure there’s somewhere under cover that’s decorated and ready to use should the weather take a sudden downturn. See our feature on p.102 for more ideas. Access Ensure walkways are flat (and well-lit) for any wheelchair/pushchair users and young or old guests who may be unsteady on their feet. Comfort Consider your guests’ changing needs throughout the day. Will they become cold, tired, bored or hungry at any point? Pre-empt this and put plenty of contingencies in place with blankets, outdoor heating, a round of evening snacks and warm drinks, a variety of entertainment (think live acts,

A blank canvas can be brilliant. The opportunity to create your own wedding space that reflects all that you love in the world will always appeal to couples desiring a distinctive day. But it can be daunting: from the dizzying choice of options available to deliberating over the minutiae, planning a marquee wedding can be an intricate business. Fret not and embrace the chance to stamp your likes and loves on your tailor-made venue. Here, the experts share their advice for styling a wow-worthy wedding under canvas.

Structural integrity Geodesic dome, tipi, yurt, traditional pole marquee, clear-span marquee, Indian tent...there’s a plethora of structures to pick from, which is your first port of creative call. And once you’ve chosen your tent type, explore different set-ups, structures, layouts and installations for both the inside and outside. “Completely clear roof marquees are on-trend right now with inspiration taken from the glass marquees of Lake Como and Australia,” observes wedding planner, stylist and coordinator Rebecca Marie (rebeccamarieweddings.co.uk). “If you like this look, consider fabric installations to add shade without compromising on style, and always explore hanging florals of some sort to fill the space above guests’ heads.” Wedding planner Rebecca Green from Rebel & Anchor (rebelandanchor.co.uk) is also drawn to the stylistically unconventional. “It doesn’t have to be traditional,” she says. “I’m working with a few couples this year who have gone for something very different. One couple has chosen yurts – these create the most wonderful space which can be daisy-chained to create other areas, such as a bar and chill-out area. Another couple has opted for a giant circus tent. It’s fun and quirky and, again, creates a wow just being what it is.” “Tipis are so versatile,” adds Hayley Eggleton from World Inspired Tents (worldinspiredtents.co.uk). “The sides can be raised to take in a beautiful view, sunset or cooling breeze in summer. In winter with the sides down, with solid oak doors, open fires lit and fairy lights sparkling, the tipis create a cosy winter wonderland.”

Colour happy Once you’ve chosen the shape, try to establish your shade as this will inform many of the decisions that follow. “The colour of your structure can make such a big difference to the aesthetic of your day; take this into account and take note as to whether your tipi is canvas/beige in colour or a crisp white,” says Rebecca Marie. “Choose a colour scheme that you love,” suggests Charlotte Winship from Tipi Spaces (tipispaces.co.uk). “It could be multiple colours or none at all: go neutral. You don’t have to add colour everywhere. Incorporate a few colour notes into your table Tipi Spaces, Photo: Venetia Norrington Photography

arrangements with a simple table runner, coloured napkins, a charger plate, coloured candles (non-drip) or seasonal flowers.”

Sunset Tipis

“My favourite way of injecting colour into your styling is through your candles,” says planner and stylist, Sophie Walker-Sünderhauf from The Little Details by Sophie (thelittledetailsbysophie.com). “They come in so many shades of various colours and it gives a reception a beautiful vibrant look.” Alternatively, Sophie suggests opting for another re-emerging trend: monochrome. “Use whites and black as your base colour with one other colour as an accent. This palette gives a reception a very clean look and is a lovely way of making a rustic venue look slightly more modern.” Palette perfected? Think about the minutiae and set to work expressing yourselves with gusto. “Incorporate favourite hobbies, places you love, adventures you have experienced,” suggests Charlotte. “It’s a fun way to share insights into your life together with your friends and family and adds a personal touch.” Hayley Eggleton agrees: “When it comes to styling, combining elements of your personalities and interests is a good starting base; look to your hobbies, favourite colours and flowers or home décor to get the creative ideas flowing.” “Some of our favourite tipi styling has been DIY décor where the couples have

created lots of things from scratch such as flowers, cakes, backdrops, table decoration, all with the help from friends and family, which can be very cost-effective,” she notes.

Make an entrance Your style should be literally spilling out of your marquee, so give your guests a flavour of what’s in store via the outside spaces and walkways right up to the tent itself. “I love a floral entrance,” says Rebecca Green of a beautifully high-impact addition. “Whether it’s flowers sprawling out of a milk churn with wild abandonment or a considered but quirky deconstructed archway.” Next, pack a visual punch with statement pieces inside. One or two will suffice to achieve the desired impact and can take any number of forms. “I love a statement piece!” enthuses Rebecca. “Perhaps think about the bar. The Natural Hire Company (thenaturalhirecompany.co.uk) has amazing circular wooden bars which can be decorated with foliage. Or if you want a DJ, perhaps look at someone like Disco Wed (discowed.com) who bring their own props and DJ out of a shed with hanging baskets!”

Hatch Marquee Hire, Photo: Freckle Photography

Hang out Depending on what shape and size of tent you choose, there may be one large space or several smaller separate or adjoining spaces to fill – which is where the fun really begins. “Some marquees are large and white – how you work with the styling can soften this,” explains Rebecca Green. “This season most of my marquee weddings have gone for hanging floral installations to create that wow. Perhaps work with the rule of three if you’re looking at floral hoops across the whole ceiling. At one wedding we’re using two large garden trestles to hang over the dining area with lots of foliage hanging down from it. It’s effective and beautiful,” she reveals. “And at one of my weddings we’re having lots of lanterns just over the dancefloor area at different sizes and levels with colours that tie into the wedding scheme.”

Absolute Canvas

“Tipis offer lots of places to hang decorations,” says Charlotte. “I use invisible nylon thread to hang brightly coloured lanterns between the poles. You can’t see the thread, so the lanterns look like they’re floating. Our tipi linking poles are a great place to create a hanging table arrangement over a long table. Hanging tea light holders look beautiful sparkling overhead.” “It’s an incredible way to make the vibe super cosy,” adds Sophie for couples planning more intimate celebrations. “You could opt for a dried flower design and get it installed above your kitchen island after your wedding!”

Light fantastic One of the most impactful features of any marquee wedding is the lighting, with simple solutions evoking a stirring atmosphere. “Hanging

festoon lights look super pretty as the sun’s going down,” suggests Rebecca Green. “Free-standing, outdoor chandeliers can also add a quirky touch of class.” “I like to keep the lighting in our tipis and tents simple,” says Charlotte. “You don’t need bright lights unless you want to spotlight performers. Twinkly fairy lights wrapped around our poles offer a warm ambience after dark and reflect off the ivory white canvas. Candles also offer warmth and intimacy. Festoon lights strung between the tipi peaks are great for offering light outdoors so you can enjoy the warm summer nights. And a firepit is a great way to offer cosy natural light and warmth after dark.” Lighting is also an easy way to up the stylistic ante and enhance the individual look of your wedding. “We love using lighting as a way to personalise and add drama to any event space,” says Hayley Jones

You may have a fairly good idea of what the

weather has in store in the days leading up to your wedding day – or you may get a sudden surprise. If flash floods, a Sahara-busting 30-degree blast or even heavy frost pops up on your weather apps, it’s a good idea to have some accessories ready. After all, you might not be able to control the elements, but there’s plenty you can do to ensure your guests feel comfortable whatever the weather.

DECORATE WITH UMBRELLAS AND FANS Umbrellas can make for stunning wedding décor, whether you use them as centrepieces, bedecked in flowers or hanging upside down along the aisle. If open umbrellas adorn your ceiling, create an umbrella station that matches your theme while also providing brollies to guests who need shelter should there be a downpour. Of course, you don’t need to have umbrellas as a theme to rock the umbrella station idea. Similar to a sweetie cart, position your station anywhere

CREATE A CANOPY Blue skies and glorious sunshine might be your dream W-day backdrop – however, too much sun and not enough shade might not be everyone’s cup of Prosecco! If your venue has some natural shade, find out what time of day this area is shaded and set up an appropriate station there. It might be a chillout area for children’s colouring activities under a big oak tree or a Prosecco station or ice cream truck under a natural floral canopy such as a rose-covered wooden pergola. COASTAL HIDEAWAYS

The Scandi-chic sanctuary

BEDRUTHAN

Perched high on the clifftops of Mawgan Porth, you’ll slip into Bedruthan’s relaxed coastal vibe as soon as you pass through its doors and find yourself cushioned in its snug, Scandi-inspired interiors. Mesmerising vistas across the Atlantic are at every turn, from the colourful climes of The Wild Café to the intimate setting of The Herring Restaurant and the lounges dotted with sink-into-me sofas. A sweep of blue also filled the floor-to-ceiling windows of our room, a Sea View Double, which came with a king-sized bed topped with downy pillows, comfy armchairs, a large bath and furnishings in eye-popping hues of orange and blue. Opening the window and falling asleep to the sound of the ocean was a delight. We whiled away much of our heavenly stay in the spa, wandering between the indoor pool, sauna and steam room to the caldarium and hydro pool, all the while gazing out at serene seas. A visit to the tranquil and fragrant climes of the Sensory Spa Garden was a highlight: during this invigorating yet relaxing journey of hot and cold experiences we enjoyed wavewatching through the porthole of the balmy cedar wood sauna before emerging to a drenching in ice cold water. Alongside body scrubs of seaweed and foraged herbs from the gardens, we enjoyed a warm shower, a soak in the hot tub and the blissful endnote: sitting next to the fire with our feet immersed in warm water and a cup of herbal tea. We savoured our evening meal at The Herring as the sun slipped behind the ocean and the tide lapped at the shoreline below. With sustainability and the finest local produce at the heart of the restaurant’s ethos, there’s always fresh fish, local meat and seasonal vegetables on the menu. Each course was utterly delectable and paired with perfectly matched drinks: think flavour-packed sharing plates, roasted cod, red miso and sweetcorn purée, cavolo nero and wild mushrooms, and brandy poached raspberry and mascarpone brûlée washed down with the likes of Fowey Valley Sparkling Cider and sweet Pedro Ximénez. From the sun-kissed sands of summer to the white-tipped breakers of winter, a stroll or surf at Mawgan Porth is a must; head off on one of the spectacular coastal walks on the doorstep or simply hunker down in your clifftop retreat with a good book while you watch the waves. For those feeling creative, the hotel runs a series of workshops – from landscape painting and jewellery-making to modern calligraphy – allowing you to return from your honeymoon with a new skill as well as the dreamiest memories. bedruthan.com

TALLAND BAY HOTEL

Lying in the hot tub beneath giant pines bathed in the pre-dusk light of the blue hour, I had one of those rare moments of deep and humbling solitude. And though Talland Bay offers everything you’d expect of a luxury four-star Cornish seaside hotel, being there in the flesh is an entirely different experience. As you arrive at the secluded cove cradled between Looe and Polperro on the sleepy south coast, the feeling of being elsewhere is instantly enveloping. Everything is designed to pique your senses while lulling you into a state of blissful relaxation. Menus brimming with local seasonal produce, chic interiors inviting you to sit and stay awhile and grounds dotted with sun loungers and pristine ‘grass infinity pool’ lawns begging you to soak up the sunshine to the soundtrack of the sea all contribute to what the hotel describes as a ‘romantic pilgrimage’. Couples can choose from sea and country view rooms, garden cottages, the self-catering bungalow and dog-friendly rooms, should you also wish to indulge your four-legged friend. We were treated to the Premier Sea View Suite complete with a statement super-king bed, striking décor, leather sofa, mood-lit bathroom (with underfloor heating, free-standing bath for two and walk-in rainfall shower) and panoramic garden and sea views that blended green and blue to jaw-dropping effect. With its balcony with two-person hot tub, private staircase, bespoke furniture and spoilsome comforts such as a Nespresso machine and mini kitchen, the bolthole is as beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside. Roam the South West Coast Path, nest on the beach at the bottom of the hill or simply stay amongst the hotel’s tranquil surrounds as you eat, drink and lose yourself to the charms of this incredibly special place. tallandbayhotel.co.uk

The cabin in the woods

TREE TOPS What could be more calming than waking to birdsong with the sun streaming across the bed? Hidden overlooking a valley in the quaint fishing cove of Cadgwith on the Lizard Peninsula, Tree Tops reimagines glamping with its gorgeous ‘hygge hideaway’ to present the most heavenly honeymoon retreat. The stunning wood cabin is both spacious and cosy courtesy of an open-plan room featuring a snug sofa, wood burner, king-sized bed and floor-to-ceiling windows revealing views of the valley’s lush canopy of trees. In fact, there are glimpses of greenery from every window including in the well-equipped bijou kitchen area and shower room, where a WC, washbasin, heated towel rail and walk-in shower complete the array of facilities. Outside, nothing but the sky interrupts the picture of leafiness, which I was happily mesmerised by from the quiet comfort of the raised deck while intermittingly dozing and reading my book with the dog at my feet, decidedly not taking stock of time. Steal yourself away and slightly further down the hill to discover the twin beaches of Cadgwith Cove alongside its pretty thatched cottages, fishing boat fleet and winding South West Coast Path, which passes straight through the village. Enjoy a drink or dinner at Cadgwith Cove Inn or The Old Cellars, and explore breathtaking cliffs and seascapes at nearby Coverack, Church Cove, Kennack Sands, Kynance Cove and England’s most southerly tip at Lizard Point for a honeymoon in Cornish paradise. uniquehideaways.com

Love in Autumn Loretta and Ted gathered friends and family for an autumnal celebration of their love in the rustic vineyard setting of Knightor “We met through a friend following a conversation that I liked a man in uniform,” smiles Loretta. “We arranged to meet for coffee – and the rest is history!” Ted chose to propose in the Isles of Scilly, Loretta’s favourite place in the world, selecting the island of St Agnes where her gran has lived for her whole life. “He proposed to me on Covean Beach while we both sat on a rock looking out to sea,” she reflects. “It was such a beautiful moment.” The couple chose Knightor Winery for their venue, styling the day to reflect the season in which they wed. “I love all the autumnal colours, so we got married in October and had a rustic, autumn theme,” says Loretta. Tapping into the creative talents of friends and family to help achieve their autumnal vision, a friend made the three-tier wedding cake comprising Guinness chocolate cake, Victoria sponge and carrot cake, while one of Loretta’s bridesmaids arranged the floristry, including gorgeous garlands on the tables. Knightor’s 18th century barn was a carnival of rich autumnal colours, carrying from the posies of flowers in jam jars and bottles to the arrangements of dried flowers filling jugs and watering cans, which sat atop log slices dotted with pine cones. Though she struggles to pinpoint just one (“as the whole day was perfect!”), Loretta admits that walking down the aisle was her favourite moment. Drinks and canapés followed the ceremony, and after the photos a mouth-watering barbecue menu featuring the likes of pulled pork, chicken and vegetarian dishes was served. With the speeches delivered and all formalities complete, the party was kick-started by Loretta and Ted’s first dance, another “magical” moment that featured the vocals of Josh Curnow. “Then we danced the evening away until midnight!” she reminisces. “It’s never too early to start planning,” says Loretta when asked to dispense her advice to other couples in the midst of wedding planning. “Get a wedding book to jot down ideas and slowly tick off the things you have done,” she says of the importance of being organised and taking note of your progress, before adding: “Set your budget and enjoy every moment.” She also suggests having your day filmed if your budget allows. “It is well worth it,” she asserts. “We have watched our video many times already since the wedding. It’s so beautiful and a lovely keepsake as you do forget some parts of the day.”

Summer Loving Alice and Sam hosted a wonderful weekend of celebrations in the heart of the Cornish countryside It was while walking their dog in the local woods on a winter’s morning that Sam dropped to one knee, surprising Alice with a meticulously planned proposal. “He planned for a photographer to be hiding in the woods, so we managed to get some great snaps of the moment!” she laughs. The couple chose Trevenna as their venue because it offered everything on their wish list. “We wanted somewhere rural that had a rustic and laidback feel to it, and would let us have a good number of family and friends stay with us on-site,” explains Alice. “Every time we visited Trevenna we had the most brilliant weather – you’d be forgiven for thinking it came as part of the package!” Booking it for the August bank holiday weekend allowed them to take full advantage of the exclusive-use venue with a welcome dinner on the Friday night and a garden party on the Sunday. The rustic chic venue set the tone for the styling, the trestle tables, bare light bulbs and minimalist floristry blending beautifully with the textures of granite, wood and exposed brickwork. “We both love green, so we knew that had to be our main colour; we teamed it with grey and white and kept the rest very simple,” says Alice. The sunshine arrived once again for the couple’s al fresco ceremony, which was followed by cocktails in the garden to a string quartet soundtrack. Guests settled down to a delectable wedding breakfast featuring fishcakes, chicken and pancetta, courgette and mushroom wellington, brownies and lemon tart before the speeches – which proved to be one of the weekend’s highlights. “There was the most overwhelming response to all of the speeches,” says Alice, reflecting on the cherished moments, from the hilarious to the teary-eyed. Their favourite moment from the day, however, was the first dance. “I didn’t want to have a slow first dance, so we had a more upbeat, dance type song that we both love,” says Alice. “We got up first and as soon as the sax kicked in everyone jumped on and went mad for it!” “With the ceremony, speeches and first dance out the way, it was great to let our hair down,” agrees Sam. The celebrations continued the next day with a more relaxed vibe. “It was really nice to socialise with our guests without all the pressure of the events on the big day,” he says. “There really is no right or wrong way to have a wedding, so you should focus on creating an event that represents who you both are and acts as a celebration for your relationship and the love you have for your friends and family,” says Alice when asked to impart her wedded wisdom. “Focus on creating a setting where you and your guests are relaxed, comfortable, well fed and watered – and ready to have a party!”

Written in the Stars Joi and Declan celebrated their love with a relaxed wedding in St Ives where celestial touches met wild Cornish flowers and sunset frolics on the sands “We wish we could say something more romantic but we’re a Tinder love story!” says Joi of how her and Declan first met. “Our first date was at Crazy Pedros in Manchester for pizza and tequila and we’ve been inseparable ever since. We do have a lot of mutual friends, so we’re sure we’d have met at some point anyway!” During a family trip to St Ives, Declan asked Joi to meet him at the chapel on the island where he popped the question. “I clambered up to my favourite spot in the world and saw him sat on the wall, ocean stretching out behind him, with a bottle of champagne and a bouquet. It was the most amazing sunset and I remember thinking that everything was perfect.” The seaside town was also the setting for their September wedding, where they exchanged their selfpenned vows at St Ives Guildhall. “The ceremony was super personal and really set the tone for the rest of the day,” says Joi. They then walked with their guests to the Beach Café Bar for Pimm’s and nibbles. “It was brilliant as we had loads of people wishing us well as we went by,” she reflects. “The sun was shining; I was in my hometown walking barefoot across the front with a champagne glass in my hand...it was perfect.” Adopting a “subtle celestial theme”, the day was decorated with a mixture of golds, pinks “and lots of sparkle”, with added details including tarot themed table numbers and celestial place names. “Hundreds of wild Cornish flowers in my favourite colours were arranged spectacularly,” adds Joi. Photos on the pier and around the town were followed by the wedding feast at The Loft, where guests tucked into the delicious likes of Cornish mussels, mixed herb gnocchi, crab linguine and mixed mushroom, sweet potato and cashew wellington rounded off by sticky toffee pudding, affogato and biscotti and rhubarb and custard. “We also designed our own cocktails,” says Joi. “I chose a cherry Negroni and Declan’s was kind of like a Manhattan, with bourbon, amaro, sherry and chocolate bitters. Both were served with a personal affirmation card for guests to keep.” “In the tipsy lull between the end of the meal and the disco we rounded up the troops for a stroll over to Porthmeor Beach where we frolicked and watched the sun go down. Then we went back to The Loft for a disco and pasties. We ended the night with sparklers and a very drunken walk back to our Airbnb!” recalls Joi. “Don’t worry so much about what other people think!” she says by word of advice. “There were things about our day that we weren’t sure everyone would ‘get’, but those turned out to be the things that made it really special because they were true to us.”

You Got The Love Lizzie and Dave’s blossom-filled wedding united those they hold dearest during a weekend of celebrations “Dave and I met in 2004 and he took me on my very first date, but our teenage love affair didn’t last long,” reveals Lizzie. Though the timing was never right to rekindle their romance in the ensuing years, the pair remained close friends until they were both single and decided to make a go of it. “I know it sounds cliché, but Dave swept me off my feet. He was determined to make up for those 12 years and he did; I’ve never felt more special or loved,” she says. It was love at first sight when the couple set eyes upon The Green. “It has incredible grounds and views, and it was perfect for the outdoor ceremony we were hoping to have,” says Lizzie. “The thing that made this our venue was the all-inclusive feel. We wanted our own little wedding world for a weekend and The Green gave us this.” The stunning blossom tree centrepieces which dressed their reception tables inspired the dreamily romantic look of the day, with blush pink and blossom motifs carrying through everything from the save the dates to the flowers and cake. The outdoor ceremony featured special readings from Lizzie’s and Dave’s sisters while providing Lizzie with her personal highlight of the day: “walking back up the aisle after saying our vows and the pom-pom confetti throw – I remember this incredibly intense feeling of happiness”. Welcome drinks were followed by live entertainment from The Swing Kings and a wedding breakfast of herby polenta, loin of pork and slow-roasted beef, salted caramel cheesecake and smashed meringue with seasonal macerated berries and vanilla cream: “The best thing I have ever eaten!” enthuses Lizzie. And speaking of fond memories, Lizzie cites her sister’s maid of honour speech as a standout moment. “It was the perfect mix of funny and emotional. Everyone was sobbing. So many people said her speech was a highlight of the day,” she says. As for Dave, it was the golden hour shoot with his new bride that lingers in his memory. “We just walked and talked,” he says. “It was so lovely to have a few moments throughout the day where it was just us.” Then it was time to party, which started with the first dance and was followed by a father-daughter dance. “The final song – Florence and The Machine’s You Got the Love – will stick in our minds,” recalls Lizzie. “We were all on the dance floor, arms around each other and I remember crying because I was so happy to be surrounded by everyone we loved most in the world after the most perfect day.” “Enjoy it all,” she urges other couples. “Planning can be all-consuming and stressful, but don’t forget why you’re doing it. We tried to see the excitement in all the organising, from picking the rings to creating the table plan and everything in-between.”

Call of the Ocean Morwenna and Steve threw a party filled with fabulous flowers, flavoursome food and plenty of fun on the clifftops of Porthleven “As a child I used to go on holiday to Mother Ivey’s Bay,” says Morwenna, who met Steve at school and the pair started dating while at college. “Steve knew how special the area was to me and said he’d take me there for a mini break, but little did I know he was planning to propose! He took to one knee on the beach first thing in the morning when we were the only people there.” From north coast to south, the couple decided to marry at Porthleven Methodist Church followed by a marquee reception overlooking the ocean at Beacon Crag. “We always knew we wanted to get married by the sea and we grew up going to the Masked Ball parties at Beacon Crag when we were teenagers, so it felt like the perfect place for us,” explains Morwenna. Fashion stylist Morwenna jumped at the chance to design the day, using the floristry as the starting point. “I wanted a minimal, clean colour palette so I chose white flowers and green foliage,” she says. “I love the impact of foliage with the warm wood of the rustic tables and whites of the marquee, which was filled with the scent from the stocks and roses. When the sun came out, we opened the marquee windows to take in the sea views.” Alongside her mum and godmother, Morwenna dressed the marquee with a gorgeous mix of flowers and lighting, weaving trailing foliage around the trio of beams while scattering candles throughout, fairy lights in the roof and bulbs in the beams for heightened ambience. Morwenna’s bridal gown - a dreamy design featuring a sweetheart neckline and long sleeve lace top offered two looks for the daytime and evening festivities. “I took the top off for the evening and had my hair down, so I was ready to party!” she says. “It felt more relaxed and was a completely different look without having to take off my gown.” Guests were spoiled with a feast for the senses throughout the day, from entertainment including live music, speech bingo, a magic mirror and DJ set to edible delights such as cocktails, canapés, Roskilly’s ice cream served from a vintage trike and a Mediterranean-style wedding breakfast where Italian antipasti and Baker Tom’s bread primed taste buds for a feast of Greek-style meats and salads, feta pies and an assortment of breads and dips. “Arriving at the church and seeing Steve’s big smile at the end of the aisle with all our family and friends around us,” reflects Morwenna when asked to pinpoint her favourite moment from their dreamy oceanside celebrations. “The church ceremony was very special with our friend who’s a vicar marrying us and more friends leading the music.” And when it comes to planning advice, she asserts: “Not everything has to be costly. Really think about what parts of the day you want to invest in and what parts you don’t.”

California Dreams Rebecca and Gordon’s three-day wedding was filled with flowers, feasting and muchtreasured time with family and friends It was Rebecca’s birthday when Gordon plucked up the courage to pop the question. “It was a beautiful sunny day so we made up a picnic and walked into St Ives,” says Rebecca. “While taking photos of the scenery, Gordon seized the moment and tried to drop to one knee but ended up on two knees! For the first time in his life, I think he was speechless!” Presenting her with a beautiful art deco style ring, he finally found the words to ask her to marry him. Although still under construction when they viewed it online, Stennack Farm presented the perfect wedding space for the couple. “We were looking to create our own wedding and celebrate for at least three days with our friends and family,” says Rebecca, who was instantly sold on the farmhouse accommodation, hot tubs and exclusive-use offerings. Drawing on their travels to California as inspiration, Rebecca and Gordon styled the venue with a vibrant palette of yellows, pinks, greens and blues. The creative couple made the name settings, designed and printed their own stationery, and crafted the signs using graffiti, stencils, spray paint and cut vinyls. Bouquets of dahlias, roses and foliage mirrored the colour scheme along with stunning flower towers that adorned the end of the aisle. Milk churns brimming with flowers and an abundance of foliage were scattered throughout the venue, while the bridesmaids and groomsmen sported corsages and buttonholes to match. The feast-style food featured the likes of mac & cheese balls, salads and lamb flatbreads. “We wanted fresh and crunchy food and it had to be colourful as it was part of our decoration,” explains Rebecca. This was followed by Magnum ice creams complete with dipping bowls, sprinkles and nuts washed down by a shot of ‘Craig Davids’ (tequila and pineapple juice), espresso martinis and sangria. The evening food comprised Reuben toasties with pork belly bites and truffle fries, fuelling guests to dance into the small hours. “The speeches were filled with so much love,” recalls Rebecca when asked about her standout moments. “It was a very emotional day and it just felt amazing to have all our friends and family in one place to celebrate, including some people we hadn’t seen since we got engaged.” “Get recommendations from friends and use suppliers local to your venue if you can,” she advises. “Speak to them on the phone or in person – they are going to be a part of your day, so you want to feel happy and at ease with them.”

North Coast Romance Lizzie and Ryan said yes to a relaxed day full of personal touches on the Cornish coast “Around 10 years ago I worked in a shop in Bristol; Ryan used to come in a lot and he eventually asked me out on a date. A few countries and ciders later, here we are!” says Lizzie of her and Ryan’s romantic beginnings. The proposal was a “mutual agreement,” she reveals. “I asked Ryan if we should get married and he said, ‘let’s go for it!’ We booked the venue and then broke the news to friends and family. A few months later, Ryan gave me an engagement ring for my birthday, which I wasn’t expecting and I just burst into tears of joy. We wanted the wedding to be about us and our love – no fuss – just lovely and relaxed.” The Driftwood Spars in St Agnes was the couple’s venue of choice, taking the location as inspiration for their laidback coastal celebrations. “The beach is where we both feel most happy. The venue has an incredible view of the beach and I wanted to bring that into each room,” explains Lizzie. She planned most of the event herself, making the entire scene a highly personalised affair that wowed guests. Dried flower arrangements in shades of pink and mauve, together with lots of pampas grass, brought gorgeous colour to the space, while tables were styled with lavender, dusky pink table runners and vinyl albums inspired by their favourite artists. “We wrote our own vows and had one of our best friends Nick curate the service,” says Lizzie. “We both spoke from the heart, and we had a sand ceremony and handfasting. It was all so personal and all I could hear was blubbering from our family and friends.” Following the emotional ceremony, guests tucked into a lip-smacking feast including catch of the day with salsa verde, corn-fed chicken with vegetables and Lizzie’s favourite dessert: Eton mess. “My lovely sister-in law-made the cake. We went for a naked cake with lavender,” she adds. When asked to recall her fondest memories of the day, she says: “The speeches were all hilarious. My dad decided to start singing Motorhead into the microphone before essentially roasting Ryan and I for the entire speech; however, there were some heartfelt moments.” “My favourite moment was when my dad collected me,” she reflects. “We walked into the waiting area and a cardboard cut-out of Dolly Parton was waiting for me, smiling away. Then I heard the aisle music and walked into the room to see everyone I loved and – most importantly – Ryan at the end of the aisle.” So how did she pretty much singlehandedly achieve such a day? “Excel spreadsheets!” she laughs. And when it comes to words of advice, her suggestions to others are a mix of practical advice and personal approach. “Set your budget to what you can afford and don’t push yourself: the day is about you, not how much money you can spend. Reach out for help when you feel overwhelmed and have fun - it’s the best day of your life!”

Add a bespoke twist to your reception drinks by serving a menu of your favourite cocktails. Phoebe

Personalise your dance floor for a fabulous focal point at your reception. You could have a large monogram of your initials or extend any venue décor onto the floor so you have a bespoke and harmonious aesthetic. Jessica

Love story.

Tell a story with your seating plan, it might be the story of your adventure together; a timeline of when you met your guests; different years and an anecdote of each year for each table, or the story of where you’ve travelled with images from each holiday and a map as your table plan. Sophie

In the detail.

Embrace your heritage or background by adding personal touches to reflect it. In my years of planning, I’ve seen ceilidh bands, military drumming, tequila shot

bars and even tiny details like mini Welsh cakes as petit fours. Phoebe

Wedding wheels.

Make sure your wedding car reflects your personalities. If you love all things vintage, choose a classic Rolls-Royce or Morris Minor; if sleek and modern is more your style, consider an Aston Martin or Bentley. Jessica

Creative keepsake.

Hiring a live event artist adds an interactive and personal element to your day. Your artist could paint or draw illustrations of your guests for fun keepsakes

or paint a portrait of the two of you or the reception scene, creating a treasured memento for your home. Jessica

Happy meal.

Serve evening food that relates to a special time in your relationship. Maybe you got engaged while travelling in Asia and fancy serving Asian street food, or perhaps you met in Cornwall and would like to offer your guests platters of Cornish pasties. Phoebe

Paper pretty.

Do you have a family member who is particularly artistic? If so, you could include their artwork on your wedding stationery, perhaps on the name cards, the reverse of your menu or as a backdrop for your seating plan. Jessica

Name it.

Have your names on display, whether it’s in neon lights, cocktail toppers or personalised linen. Sophie

The sound of music.

Music lifts the energy at a wedding and, to add to the atmosphere when it’s time for the speeches, choose some carefully chosen songs to introduce those delivering a speech. Perfect for setting the mood, it’s also a great opportunity to choose a funny or meaningful song. Jessica

Let’s dance.

Ask your guests to add their favourite song that they would like played during the evening party to the RSVP to ensure that everyone gets up and dances. Phoebe

Best dressed.

Is there a themed element to your wedding? If so, consider asking your serving and venue staff to dress for the occasion – perhaps it’s a 1920s’ theme or a destination wedding and you want to reflect the surroundings. Jessica

Sweet art.

Make your cake table a centrepiece, perhaps by filling it with images of your favourite people. Show it off and make it unique! Sophie
