Set in a woodland glade in south Devon, our cover shoot features a wing-like carnival of blooms, ethereal dresses and a beautiful palette of blue and toffee hues inspired by an African bird. Aptly entitled Paradise Found, it sums up the feeling that so many of our featured couples described when they laid their eyes on their dream setting to marry in Devon.

There’s Megan and David, who fell in love with the timeless elegance of Rockbeare Manor; Manasa and Albin, who loved the idea of marrying within touching distance of the shore in Combe Martin, and Verity and James, who threw their colourful celebrations in James’ parents’ lovingly restored garden in south Devon. Each couple found their patch of heaven amidst the county’s diverse and dazzlingly beautiful landscape. Whether you’re drawn to the moors or the coast, rolling meadows or wooded valley, you’ll find an incredibly special setting to marry in this extraordinary county.

A love of the land weaves its way through these pages. The South-west is brimming with talented jewellers who draw inspiration from their surroundings, and we look at wedding and engagement rings reflecting everything

When using the logo at minimum size, be careful to ensure that the website address and registration number is still legible if reversed out of a coloured background or image.

Also deep within the Devon hills, Deer Farm Tipi Weddings provides a lush canvas for Modern Love: a fresh, industrial-inspired look for a contemporary rural celebration.

WINTER WONDERLAND

With its rugged, sprawling expanses and ancient Tor-dotted heights, the romance of Dartmoor is undeniable, its untamed beauty making a wildly atmospheric backdrop for a wedding. Located right alongside the meandering River Dart with its granite bolders, Badgers Holt sits in a private, secluded and sheltered location in the heart of the moor.

Badgers Holt is a rustic, wildly romantic and rugged venue with a choice of spaces for ceremonies and receptions, including the Riverside Garden Room, Banquet Fireside Room and a bandstand in the garden as well as the option of a ceremony right on the riverbank.

A beautiful setting for a wedding through all the seasons, Badgers Holt offers particular enchantment during the winter months. Imagine marrying amidst the crackle of a log fire and the flicker of candlelight, then stepping outside for a bracing walk on the moors, hand in hand, basking in that ‘just married’ feeling amidst the wild beauty of the ancient landscape. Returning to the warm and cosy climes of the venue for a veritable feast – whether it’s a hearty hog roast or a three-course banquet – you can dance the night away beneath a carnival of twinkling fairy lights. Complete with self-catering apartments and a wedding suite (sleeping up to 24 guests), you might round off the festivities by curling up in front of the fire, with the rushing waters of the River Dart and the deep Dartmoor night at the window. Dreamy.

STRIKE A POSE

We love a wedding photo booth: not only does it provide a fun activity for guests, it also produces some truly memorable photos as well as a brilliant talking point – and Margot Camper will definitely be talked about long after the wedding is over! With her bright flowers and pink facade, the 1970s vintage VW camper is the perfect fit for a festival wedding, while being kitted out with a Canon DSLR means the quality of the images is superb too.

“After three years of studying fashion photography, and freelancing for four years, I decided to combine my love for vintage VWs, photos and props to create Margot,” says owner Elle Murray. Being a photographer herself means she can also offer professional photos of your guests having fun using the super-fun camper van, adding another element to remember. What’s more, a new ICON booth - a stand alone iPad booth - will be available this spring.

With a huge range of props, it’s easy to get brilliant photos of all your guests – the hard bit will be persuading them to leave Margot! Providing them with gorgeous photos, they’ll have a beautiful keepsake (or 10!) so they can treasure the memory of your wedding day forever.

SILVER BELLS

Calling all lovebirds with a taste for la dolce vita. North Devon’s new wedding venue Little Silver House is an escapist’s dream, combining a sublime away-from-it-all locale with luxe touches for a secluded and incredibly romantic wedding.

Set amidst sprawling countryside overlooking the River Taw in the picture-postcard village of High Bickington, the retreat is perfect for couples seeking somewhere private and peaceful while also wanting to treat their guests to beguiling views, stellar service and a luxurious glamping experience. Ideal for intimate celebrations, couples can exchange vows in the spring-fed grotto by the pond or the blue shepherd’s hut, which is framed by apple blossom in the spring. Ceremonies may also take place in the atrium, on the lawn before farreaching views across rolling meadows or on the veranda of the beautiful Victorian house. Decorate your chosen space to individually suit and take advantage of the team’s expert knowledge and hand-picked list of suppliers who will help to make your dream wedding day scenario a reality.

What’s more, a cluster of shepherd’s huts can be found in a landscaped apple orchard. Each comes with its own private hot tub and dedicated golf buggy, providing a picturesque place for up to eight of your closest friends and family to extend their downtime with you. Meanwhile, newly-weds can enjoy three nights in the spacious annexe of the Little Silver Nugget, where breathtaking views, an award-winning private woodland hot tub and country-cool interiors ensure a dreamily memorable way to commence married life.

FANTASTIC FEASTS

The food will be one of the most talked-about elements of your wedding day, and you want to be confident that your feast will wow your loved ones. With more than 25 years of experience in event catering, Exeter-based Posh Nosh will ensure you’re not only thrilled by the flavours and service on the day, but that the whole experience is an enjoyable and stress-free one.

“Our service is very much a tailored experience, so we take the time to get to know you and what you want for your big day,” says Gemma, events coordinator of the award-winning team. “The food at your wedding is incredibly important, but our services don’t stop there if you don’t want them to. We can help you plan your wedding from styling and decoration through to the running order and, on the day itself, make absolutely sure that everything goes exactly to plan.”

Using Devon’s finest produce, the team makes the most of the county’s stunning surroundings, selecting from the countryside and coastline to ensure the freshest meats, fish and vegetables for your chosen dishes. Thanks to their highly personalised approach, your menu can be tailored to your requirements, whether that’s a relaxed afternoon tea, a sharing feast of piled-high platters or a formal three-course extravaganza. While the delectable range of evening food options extends from local pasties to authentic street food stalls, the team can ensure guests have a mouthwatering experience for the duration of the festivities, from sharing pots served the night before the wedding to a brunch or breakfast hamper the morning after.

And if you’re getting married this year, their special offer of complimentary canapés for weddings booked for the remainder of the 2023 season means their tasty offerings are as budget-friendly as they are delicious! Minimum guest numbers and terms and conditions apply. posh-nosh.co.uk

JUST THE TWO OF US

Picture-perfect doesn’t quite cover it. Nestled amidst sprawling countryside in Devon’s South Hams, Hareston Manor is an enchanting Jacobean manor house surrounded by wooded hills and wildflowers.

Exclusive and bespoke are the keynotes of weddings here and, from English country garden soirées to festival-chic weddings under canvas, the venue hosts custom-made events of the most unforgettable variety. Now opening its doors for winter elopements, the historic venue is set to make a magical backdrop for justfor-two celebrations.

You might choose to tie the knot amidst the flicker of candlelight in St Martin’s Chapel, a stirringly romantic setting dating back to 1379. Ceremonies may also take place at the entrance of the manor house or a private spot in the grounds, with its manicured gardens, sweeping avenues of trees and open spaces with farreaching country views. As is the beauty of an elopement wedding, the rest of the day may pan out however you wish, and you might choose to extend your sojourn in this scenic spot with a stay in the 15th century South Wing apartment or a luxury glamping pod in the surrounding woodland.

With sustainability at the fore of Hareston Manor’s ethos, you can look forward to a wedding rich in romance, history and natural beauty in the depths of winter.

The gorgeous colours of an African bird inspire a luxe and dreamily romantic wedding scene in a tucked-away corner of Devon

feature | STYLING | PARADISE FOUND
16 Devon #54 2023 www.wedmagazine.co.uk
photography Kathryn Clarke-McLeod styling & coordination Hyland Weddings & Events & Glas Events

A visit to the Natural History Museum in London was the spark that inspired this styled shoot, capturing the creative imagination of wedding planner and stylist Natalie Hyland of Hyland Weddings & Events.

“The colours of the Abyssinian Roller, a bird native to tropical Africa, really caught my eye with its natural toffee-coloured back and sky, aqua and royal blue wings,” she says. “It was simply beautiful.”

The dream rural setting for a styled shoot inspired by the bird, Higher Holcombe makes the perfect backdrop – “not only for its undeniably gorgeous outdoor spaces but also because the owner, Jo, spent many years living and working in Africa with her husband”, explains Natalie of the idyllic rural venue in South Devon.

The lush canvas of silver birch trees is painted with the shades of the Abyssinian roller, reflected in every detail from the flowers and dresses to the cocktails. “The bridal gowns, cake and table linen were in the warm toffee and neutral hues of the bird’s body, while the groom’s outfit, florals and napkins were designed to reflect the colours in the wings,” says Natalie.

The smaller details, too, add to the endlessly romantic aesthetic, from the handcrafted granulated jewellery and elegant silks to the billowing sleeves of the bridal gown. Striking a luxe and gorgeously ethereal note, the shape of the ceremony backdrop creates the impression of the bird’s wings. Fabric draping along the aisle, together with a backdrop to accentuate the beauty of the wings, adds texture and depth to the glorious natural surroundings. The effect is oh-so beautiful: a slice of paradise in a tucked-away corner of Devon.

THE CALL OF AUTUMN

The warm hues of autumn meet sustainable touches and ethereal accents in this stirringly beautiful elopement at Brickhouse Vineyard

THE CALL OF AUTUMN 23

The draw of Devon as an elopement destination and, in particular, the leafy vines, rolling meadows and away-from-it-all charm of Brickhouse Vineyard, inspired this romantic styled shoot.

“It was important to me to showcase the very best of Devon and Somerset, using an all-female team of small business owners,” says photographer Hannah Sharpe, who coordinated the shoot. “I chose like-minded women with a sustainable approach, being mindful of how much waste a wedding can create.”

These sustainable elements include the vegan cake and flowers, which combined dried flowers with carefully selected fresh blooms. “None of the flowers were imported,” explains Hannah. “Our florist, Mimosa & Moss, uses seasonal flowers grown in the UK as part of her eco-friendly approach.”

The venue’s 18th century thatched round house and vineyard, aglow with the rich colours of autumn, provide the perfect canvas for a love story styled with ethereal and seasonal touches. “I asked for the colours to be kept true to the colours outside, and so we were treated to an array of rich browns, mahogany, toffee and burgundy,” says Hannah.

The seasonal palette weaves through every detail –from the cake and flowers to the make-up – while the bridal looks carry the captivating beauty of the scene, with dream-like gowns and texture-rich accents in the whimsical flower crown and jewellery.

Wandering amidst the leafy climes of the vineyard in the golden light, the shoot plays out like the most gorgeous dream: an ode to autumn and, indeed, to the romance and enchantment of Devon.

Bows are back

Granted, they never really left the runway, but bows remain an easy way to up the sartorial ante. Part of the maximalist movement, oversized bows are appearing everywhere from the shoulders to the derrière, skirt and train. Detachable or in-built, they ooze modern glamour. Alternatively, mini bows are also de rigueur, offering a more understated look through dainty bow belts, floating bows, tiny hand-stitched embellishments, spines of bows and delicate bow detailing.

THE I DO EDIT

From bold bows to micro minis, these are the looks to love for the coming year’s nuptials

Tulle

Tulle will always be synonymous with bridal wear. As far as ultra-wearable, light-as-a-feather fabrics go, it’s the clear winner. Especially suited to ethereal styles, it whispers feminine and timeless romance. Full tulle skirts, draping or off-the-shoulder sleeves, tulle mock necks and billowing veils are all coveted additions on the catwalk. Dotted, bobbinet, silk or pearl – there’s an array of different types, textures and effects for a multitude of looks. And if you want to create two ensembles in one, pair your gown of choice with a detachable tulle skirt or shawl for an extra shot of style.

Square necklines

Though reminiscent of romantic Regency-style empire gowns, square necklines also offer a modern-cut edge for brides seeking a blend of traditional and trending. Chic, simple and versatile; combine with puff sleeves for an opulent sense of romance, lace for boho beauty, a mermaid silhouette for formfitting seduction or a statement ballgown for tailored elegance.

Corset styles

Boudoir-inspired bridal wear continues to reign supreme. Think lace-up backs, underwear as outerwear, structured bodices and exposed boning for the most sensual ensemble imaginable. Whether you prefer babydoll or bandage dresses, there’s a bridal look to suit. Daring brides will delight in flossing, cut-outs, deep plunging V-necks, corsetry and nude fabrics, while those in favour of a more modest outfit will migrate toward cinched waists, structured bodices, lace bustiers and sweetheart styles.

Textural and sheer fabrics

Barely-there styles are beautifully on point, presenting brides with the chance to bare all or cleverly cover up with just a hint of skin. Sheer fabrics are the perfect solution to achieve a range of looks, including ‘naked’ gowns and bohemian splendour. From sheer tulle tops and illusion backs to translucent lace, sheer skirts and trains, see-through materials (with or without carefully placed panels, appliqués and embroideries) can be as layered, embellished or exposing as you like. Meanwhile, textural fabrics and elements can be used to achieve a more subtle – or similarly risqué – effect, such as with (colourful) floral embroidery, faille, crinkled chiffon, 3D florals, feathers, dotted tulle and crochet.

Voluminous sleeves

Fast becoming a bridal mainstay, voluminous sleeves are a high-impact and romantic addition to any outfit. Puff sleeves maintain their position on the most-wanted list alongside balloon sleeves and flared styles. Off-theshoulder, removable and three-quarter lengths are popular ways to enhance the fairytale factor, while flared sleeves (flutter, batwing, bell) can evoke everything from a retro to a regal vibe. Go bold with bishop sleeves or vintage with fluted sleeves. So long as there’s shape or volume involved, you’ve struck the right fashion chord.

Sparkle

Eye-catching adornments are all the rage, ensuring head-turning fashions with a heady dose of glamour. Metallics are making a megawatt resurgence – either tonally through the fabric or as embellishments, while everything from a delicate scattering of sequins to jewelencrusted bodices are hitting the sartorial mark. There’s a host of ways to create or capture the look including beads, crystal work, mirror and reflective embellishments, and rhinestones, whether it’s head-to-toe sparkle or the odd light-catching speck you favour. Spruce up a plain dress with freshwater pearls strung along your back and shoulders, pick all-over beaded lace or add metallic embroidery to your veil, train or appliqué for the most bedazzling bridal look.

Ballgowns

Never have ballgowns been more breathtaking. Offering brides eternal elegance along with the chance to showcase swoon-worthy designs, the ballgown has been transformed into today’s modern wonder. With costume drama influences and Gothic elements all filtering into ballgowns, expect to pore over everything from frocks with feather fringing and mock necks to blue and black coloured gowns. Tiered skirts remain a staple, while paints and prints are eye-catchingly en vogue. Minimalist Mikados pack a simplistic statement, cutouts and corsets create contemporary edge, splits whisper seduction and ruffles ooze romance. Adornments of note include hand-stitched embroideries and beadwork, paper ribbons, feathers, giant bows and pearl detailing.

Bridal separates

For instant personalisation, mix and match designs are the fun, versatile and oh-so stylish choice. Announce your à la mode status by pairing hand-picked pieces to suit your individual fancies. Making particular waves on the runways are heirloom separates, dressed up jumpsuits with capes/overskirts, statement shrugs and twopiece pantsuits. There’s a set to thrill everyone from fashionista to boho bride, including classic all-white bridal suits (with detachable overskirts), statement cargo pant and bralette two-pieces and silk camisoles or lace tops with maxi skirts. Veils, headpieces and gloves complete the carefully curated ‘editorial’ look – or opt out of the accessories for a more laidback, barefoot vibe.

Micro minis

Party-ready, frivolous and uberfashionable, the LWD (little white dress) is amok on the runways. Micros are one of the most coveted of cool styles, with thigh-high splits and highlows (or the new ‘mini-low’) providing alternative ways to flash your pins during the aisle walk or after-party. Perfect for a sneaky dress change midway through the day, layer a short skirt with a longer overskirt to remove post-nuptials, or swap a maxi skirt for a mini for a wow-worthy first dance moment. You might wish to nod to the trend with a chic tulip skirt or asymmetrical hemline, or own the look with illusion panels, sheer lace, open back or plunging neckline.

Use the fresh start of the season as beauty inspiration for a spring wedding

words Becci Clubb

Spring is all about new beginnings. The mild weather, drawn-out evenings and buds and blossoms all make for a perfect season to start your new beginning as a married couple.

When it comes to hair and beauty for spring brides, there are limitless options. From barely-there make-up to a bright pink lipstick, and long flowing curls finished with fresh flowers to a sleek updo, it can be hard to know where to start. We’re here to help you whittle down the options, lock in a beauty routine and find your spring style.

PREP AND PRIME

Bridal beauty doesn’t begin when you sit down to be pampered by hair and make-up artists on the morning of the big day. Preparations start in the months prior. Around six months before the wedding, start a daily skin and haircare routine. This is especially important for spring brides, as you have harsh weather conditions over the winter to contend with. Nail down the products that best suit your skin’s needs and use them morning and night.

Beauty top tips

What you know

As you head closer to the wedding date, don’t be tempted to try a new product, as you run the risk of a skin reaction – stick with your tried-and-tested routine and you’ll be on the path to radiant bridal beauty.

Stay hydrated

Hydrated skin equals glowing skin. Drink plenty of water and include a great moisturiser in your beauty routine to create the perfect canvas for make-up application. Try applying L’Occitane Immortelle Divine Cream (uk.loccitane.com) at night and wake up with radiant, supple skin in the morning. Don’t forget to moisturise your hands too, ready for the exchanging of rings – try Burt’s Bees Moisturising Botanical Hand Cream with shea butter, watermelon and mint (burtsbees.co.uk).

Banish dark circles

The best remedy for dark circles is getting a good night’s sleep, but wedding planning can leave you lying awake at night. Start using an eye cream to help treat dark circles, fine lines and puffiness. Germaine De Capiccini’s Timexpert SRNS Illuminating Detox Eye Formula (germaine-de-capuccini.co.uk) is an award-winning eye cream that will leave you looking fresh-faced.

Pucker up

Soft, kissable lips are a must on your wedding day! Keep your lips in the best condition by using a lip scrub a couple of times a week (we love Milani Rose Sugar Lip Scrub (milanimakeup. co.uk) and wearing lip balm regularly.

Care for your hair

Dedicate an evening each week to a haircare routine, using a hair mask such as L’Occitane Intensive Repair Hair Mask. Daily, try to use styling products like the Jerome Russell Bstyled range (bblondehair.co.uk/bstyled) to keep your hair in tip-top condition, and have your final colour treatment and haircut two weeks before the wedding to allow it time to settle. Now is not the time to change your hairstyle! If you want a new style for the wedding, have your hair cut before your hair trials so that your stylist knows what they’re working with ahead of the big day.

BRIDAL BEAUTY

While a bridal beauty look is always an individual choice, the aim should be to look the very best version of you. If you always wear full make-up, don’t choose your wedding day to try a minimal make-up for look for the first time. Likewise, if you don’t usually wear much make-up, a heavy coverage foundation and dark smoky eye might leave you feeling out of sorts. Have a make-up trial with your chosen make-up artist ahead of the wedding day or, if you have decided to do your own make-up, get your products well in advance so you can test them and have a trial of your own.

Spring beauty looks

Au naturel

Keep your make-up look neutral with nude tones. Ask your makeup artist to create a light coverage and opt for a soft pink blush and a natural nude lipstick in a matte finish to create barely-there make-up.

Bright lips

Keep your overall beauty look soft but switch out a nude lip for a bright pop of colour, from bold candy pink to rich coral. Echo the pops of colour emerging from nature and reflect the colours from your bouquet in your lip colour.

Dewy skin

Use an illuminating primer under your foundation to achieve glowing, dewy skin. Add shimmering highlighter across your cheekbones and finish the look with a high-shine lip gloss for freshfaced bridal beauty.

Smoky eye

Use browns, nudes and a neutral shimmer to create a smoky eye that’s in keeping with the season. Use a brow product like Benefit’s Fluff Up Brow Wax (benefitcosmetics.com) to enhance your brows. The softer colours and natural brows will make your eyes pop, while keeping the overall look soft and feminine.

HAIR FLARE

With so much inspiration around and so many things to consider, deciding how you want to wear your hair on your wedding day can be difficult. If you are booking a hair stylist, have a trial and pin down the look you want ahead of the big day. This will help you with timing for the morning preparations too.

Spring hairstyle ideas

Long and flowing

Wear long locks down, styled with a big, bouncy blow dry. Add volume at the roots and, if you have fine hair but want to wear it down, consider adding hair extensions to make your locks look thicker. Finish your look with a flower crown.

Half-up, half-down

If your hair tends to fall a bit flat when it’s down but you like the look of loose waves, opt for a half-up, half-down style. Having your hair pinned up and away from your face will add volume and height.

Sleek updo

Style your hair into a perfectly arranged updo. Keep the look sleek by pulling the hair away from your face into a low bun for a fresh finish to your aisle style.

Twisted updo

Embrace a romantic updo, created with twists and plaits. A braided style is a favourite with brides as it creates texture and volume. Ask your stylist to weave flowers or foliage into the plaits.

BE JEWELLED

GIRL’S BEST FRIEND

Sustainable and ethical choices are foremost in couples’ jewellery buying decisions today – and Drakes in Plymouth now offers an exquisite range of lab-grown diamonds for brides and grooms-to-be to peruse by appointment.

“Lab-grown diamonds have been available in the jewellery sector in recent years, but 2022 marked a much wider introduction to the UK audience,” says Abi Davies from Drakes. While the idea of synthetic diamonds was first raised at the end of the 18th century, it wasn’t until the 1940s that research began on whether diamonds could be synthetically produced.

As their name suggests, these diamonds are grown in a laboratory to be chemically identical to natural diamonds that are mined from the ground. Their popularity is increasing thanks to several factors, including their cost and eco credentials. In fact, they start from around 60% cheaper than mined diamonds, meaning you may be able to select a higher grade of colour, clarity, and carat for your budget – or perhaps consider a diamond pendant and earrings set.

“The arrival of lab-grown diamonds into the bridal jewellery market makes fine jewellery sets for your wedding and beyond so much more affordable,” says Abi. “There’s no doubt that the price and size benefits will make a lot of bride’s jewellery dreams achievable.”

The investment or resale value of lab-grown diamonds is still unclear, while mined diamonds are unlikely to lose their value or desirability, due to their finite nature as a natural resource. However, in allowing brides to complete their wedding day look with a stunning flourish of sparkle while keeping within the parameters of budget, eco credentials and style, lab-grown diamonds are a welcome addition to Drakes’ swoon-worthy collections.

Two new Italian jewellery brands have also arrived in-store. The stunning jewels by Italian sculptress and painter Annamaria Cammilli feature fluid three-dimensional forms in gold and diamonds, while Giovanni Raspini creates bold and strikingly beautiful pieces in silver. Perfect as statement pieces for your bridal ensemble as well as special gifts, it’s an exciting time to visit Drakes and plan your wedding day jewels.

The lab-grown diamonds are available to view by appointment; please contact the store.

NATURAL WONDERS

Andy Warhol noted that: “land really is the best art” and, indeed, Mother Nature has served as muse for creatives since the dawn of time, inspiring everyone from painter to poet with her wild beauty.

Today, wedding world is as beguiled by her as ever. Nature-filled nuptials, zero-waste events and outdoor celebrations all embrace our love affair with landscape, and nowhere is that more palpable than here in the South-west. Dramatic moorlands, sweeping countryside and ancient woodlands surrounded by the ocean not only provide the most romantic backdrops

for weddings, but inspire a host of details – including the wedding rings.

The region’s jewellery designer-makers are clearly enamoured by nature, presenting collections that capture the colours and textures of their surrounds –including bespoke rings rooted in a sense of place.

“The jewellery we make is not only inspired by our natural surroundings, but nature plays a part in our making process – from the natural gemstones we use to the beach sand we cast in, and the hardwoods we inlay,” explains Jamila Hirtenstein from Justin Duance.

“Often it feels more of a collaboration between the maker and the natural materials we are working with.”

Justin uses sand collected from couples’ favourite places to cast the bands, along with other elements including metal (like sentimental gold), wood (from a poignant item or place) and gemstones (such as vintage diamonds or sea-coloured stones). In doing so, the rings bring to life each couple’s unique love story with his signature ‘rough’ style that evokes the shapes and tones of nature.

example of how landscape directly impacts the feel and look of a maker’s work. Sea-worn surfaces, organic shapes and tumbled finishes are the keynotes of her pieces, which are cast in a range of metals (including refined and recycled) using the traditional lost-wax process. The result is fabulously tactile pieces that curve and twist like tangled knots of seaweed and rough stacks of stone and rock.

“The refined, fluid, molten texture featured in Erin’s jewellery collections are inspired by the rolling hills and rugged tors of Dartmoor where she spends her weekends,” says Janie Wolverson of Devon jeweller, Erin Cox. “Her distinctive bubble collection is reminiscent of the shimmering waters of the Devon rivers and seas. Delicate hues of blue, green and heather found in Erin’s natural sapphires, spinels and aquamarines are a beautiful way of capturing the tones of the landscape further.”

Working in Fairtrade and eco (recycled) gold and platinum while hand-picking rare and untreated stones to create contemporary yet fine art jewellery, both Erin’s signature collection and her sister venture, The Molten Wedding Ring Company – a capsule collection of hand-cast bands that can be individually customised – represent her wild Devon surrounds to spellbinding effect.

Meanwhile, West Cornwall’s coastline is uniquely captured in Stephanie Stevens’ striking creations. Her one-off jewellery experiences allow couples to follow and co-design their rings at each stage of production, while the influence of the ocean that laps just beyond her St Ives studio is evident in every eye-catching piece, whether incorporating the outline of the coastline into her designs or local sand via bespoke inlays. From her waveshaped rings to spectacular bands set with ethically sourced Ocean Diamonds, Stephanie’s jewellery echoes her surrounds with personalised flair.

The patterns and shapes found in nature also comprise a key source of inspiration for artisan goldsmiths Isabella Day and Ford Hallam at The Remarkable Goldsmiths in Dartmouth. “We feel very inspired by those repeating curves we find in sand textures and waves,” says Isabella. “We use a very rare technique of Japanese engraving that uses tiny punches and chisels to make individual marks, so a lot of our work is to do with the textures and patterns you see in macro: the tiny grains of sand or the ripples in water.”

As master alloy makers with 28 different colours of gold, The Remarkable Goldsmiths can capture the gorgeous colours of nature in their jewellery. “I often try to match stones to metal colours,” explains Isabella. “For example, we have a new Japanese green gold alloy and I plan to bring out a new range of wedding rings in this, some with stones that reflect its beautiful colour.” Having recently mapped the outline of Mothecombe beach to engrave onto a ring, Isabella often

uses lines from the landscape to stamp place and personality onto a piece, while everything from standing stones to the texture of bark provide further starting points for the duo’s strikingly beautiful work.

Dartmoor also weaves its way into the breathtaking creations by jeweller Corrinne Eira Evans, who uses recycled precious metals and responsibly sourced diamonds and sapphires in unusual cuts to create her one-of-a-kind pieces. “Each ring is handstamped with an old setting tool to create patterns evoking the organic landscape of my surrounding moorland of Dartmoor,” she explains. The result is a selection of textured bands in platinum, 18ct yellow or white gold, silver or oxidised (blackened) silver, with the option of added sparkle via a sapphire or smattering of flush-set brilliant-cut diamonds.

If your heart lies in a special corner of the natural world – whether it’s the wild beauty of the moor or the sandy shores of a certain beach – it may offer the perfect starting point for a forever-worthy ring.

BUTTONHOLES

Taking their cue from floristry trends, the humble buttonhole (or even the ‘new’ buttonhole – pocket square boutonnieres) are emerging as something of a standalone and statement feature in groomswear. “Buttonholes have moved through the trends in the same way that bridal bouquets have, from larger, colourful arrangements with a velvet ribbon to more toned down, almost non-floral displays,” notes Rebecca from The Garden Gate Flower Company (thegardengateflowercompany.co.uk). “Whilst matching buttonholes were very much a thing, we are now seeing a more unique approach to these little arrangements – each one celebrating something different that the garden offers whilst still sitting within the chosen colour palette. For 2023 we continue the desire for dried elements; grasses like bunny tails still being a firm favourite!”

“I’ve found that buttonhole style is becoming much simpler,” says Helen from The Velvet Daisy (thevelvetdaisy.co.uk). “Most of my grooms last year had a ‘soft’ version of the classic and simple rose buttonhole – the softness created by using buds at varying stages of opening, with the delicacy of spray roses.” Along with the use of fresh British flowers, another emerging trend Helen’s observed is scented buttonholes, “with small amounts of scented delicacy, not only in the flowers but by using a host of different scented herbs and foliage such as sage, rosemary, camomile, lavender, bay and eucalyptus”.

TIES AND BOW TIES

Black tie is still causing quite the sartorial stir, so anything that fits within the aesthetic or follows a monochromatic theme scores top groom’s style marks. Velvet bow ties and textured ties, such as silk and knit, are clear winners, with modern panache added through prints and patterns of florals, nature motifs, puppytooth and especially jacquard. Colour-wise, jewel tones in blue, wine and green, along with neutral and earthy tones, are all the rage. Throw in a clashing or matching pocket square or pair of braces to complete your look of choice.

Loafers or leather brogues in tan or any shade of brown (or patent and black if you’re donning black tie) remain a groom’s wardrobe staple. Informal footwear in the form of fancy (sustainable) sneakers or a customised pair of Converse are the cool yet considered option for more laid-back grooms.

JEWELLERY

The latest adornments have a definitive ‘feminine’ appeal, with pearl jewellery, ornate lapel pins, brooches and antique pocket watches with delicate detailing all making a stand-out appearance. Pick a personalised or vintage tie bar, commission a pair of bespoke cufflinks (with a touch of dazzle), or opt for a simple bracelet; think pearl beaded, a brushed metal band with engraving, or a chain link. Necklace-wise, a slim metal chain is a subtle, goes-with-anything choice or, for a high-fashion look, a bolo tie with braided leather or cord and ornamental clasp satisfies the catwalks’ current Western-inspired craze.

UNDERWEAR & SOCKS

Don’t forget those finishing touches, chaps. Flash a pair of colour pop or designer socks for an added element of fun or fashionable edge. From unique embroideries to bright hues, go punchy with polka dots, snazzy with stripes, retro with paisley, or super stylish with herringbone dress socks. And finally… surprise your spouse (and keep chafe-free comfy!) with underwear bought especially for the occasion. You can’t go wrong with perfectly fitted pristine white boxers or ultrasoft cotton breathable briefs, while microfibre trunks or contoured boxer briefs provide the ideal mix of coolly snug and stylish.

Some seriously stylish grooms give the lowdown on their big day attire

OLD SCHOOL STYLE

Amo paired paisley and personal accents for his wedding to Alicia at The Headland Hotel in Newquay

“I was keen to go for an old Hollywood vibe,” explains Amo. “I wanted a classic dinner suit but with a unique element, so I selected a blue paisley silk fabric. There was a slight mishap when the suit was made in the wrong fabric, but thankfully it was only a slight difference in pattern and still looked epic!”

A series of carefully considered finishing touches completed his luxe look, from his Rotary watch and watch cufflinks to his initials embroidered on his cuffs and deep crimson buttonhole.

Sorting your suits isn’t about hiring the first grey number you set eyes upon. Your wedding attire is an opportunity to stamp your personal style on your day – and more and more grooms are getting creative with their ensembles and wearing something special for their big moment. Whether it’s a cool cut, bold colour or luxe fabric – or details that reflect their personality or relationship with a loved one – many grooms are personalising their look with touches that say something about them. Your wedding attire is also an opportunity to build on the aesthetic of your day, from a classic dinner suit for a timelessly elegant wedding to light pastels for a laidback, summer celebration. From traditional to contemporary, these grooms didn’t skimp on style…

ACCESSORISING IN STYLE

Tobias drew on his heritage, personal style and favourite finishing touches for his wedding to Hannah at Trevenna

“For our ceremony, I wore my full weight Kennedy tartan kilt,” says Tobias. “I’m Scottish on my mum’s side and proud of my heritage. I modernised the look with a Glen Orchy charcoal tweed waistcoat and jacket along with a white shirt, bow tie and gold cufflinks, which Hannah had bought for me as a wedding gift and had engraved with my initials. To keep with the more modern theme, I went for charcoal kilt socks and black leather shoes – something more plain as opposed to the traditional brogue. To finish the ensemble, I wore a bespoke leather and tweed sporran handmade by my dad. It was a great mix of modern and traditional Scottish.

After our ceremony, I changed into a classic tux. I kept this look traditional with the white shirt, bow tie and cufflinks, a subtle black leather belt and a statement lug sole horsebit leather loafer. As men, we often get a little left behind when it comes to accessorising, so I’ve always been a fan of a good shoe. I wore my favourite watch for our entire wedding day: a chunky gold piece from Armani.”

A PERSONAL TWIST

It was all in the detail for Declan who married Joi in St Ives

“I wanted my look to be a bold modern take that showed a bit of my personality, while still being smart,” explains Declan. “My Twisted Tailor suit was perfect: from a distance it looked plain black but, up close and when it caught the sun, the geometric pattern really stood out. I wore a smart dress shirt with a black waistcoat to differentiate myself slightly from the groomsmen but we all wore the same pink tie to match the theme. I wore a celestial tie clip that matched Joi’s earrings as I wanted to have something in common with my beautiful bride. My Ted Baker shoes were nothing too fancy on top, just black, but the soles were pink for another flash of colour.”

THE LIGHT SIDE

In keeping with their relaxed boho theme and pastel palette, Aidan chose a pale pink suit for his wedding to Naomi at Brickhouse Vineyard

“Initially I was very indecisive about a suit for our wedding day,” says Aidan. “I knew I wanted a light colour that fitted the theme. My groomsmen were always going to be beige, and I wanted to stand out and wear something different. Naomi found the light pink suit and, while I was a bit sceptical at first, it looked great on, and I loved how all the colours came together on the day.

I wore a white satin tie, a white fitted shirt and white loafer-style shoes to complete the outfit. My buttonhole and some personalised gold cufflinks from Naomi finished the look.”

Winter Warmth

Deep colours, gold shimmers and handcrafted touches paint a wildly romantic wedding scene for the dark months of winter photography Freeformimages Photography planning & styling Anomaly Weddings

feature | STYLING | WINTER
WARMTH
62 Devon #54 2023 www.wedmagazine.co.uk

There’s something about a wedding in the winter months – and this styled shoot captures the romantic potential of the season in the setting of a tucked-away Devon idyll. Hawke Barn, a beautifully renovated 16th century threshing barn, is an intimate and romantic venue that radiates warmth and historic charm. Flanked by 250 acres of countryside, where rolling hills and ancient woodland meet a tranquil lake and charmfilled stables and barns, it makes the ideal canvas for a styled shoot that celebrates the rich pickings of Devon’s natural world and its talented creatives.

Described as “a dreamlike and magical fantasy” by planner and stylist Jenny Dell of Anomaly Weddings who organised it alongside photographer Laura Farmer of Freeformimages, the styled shoot embraces a seasonal palette comprising deep shades of burgundy, rich golds and muted greens. These shades carry from the floral arrangements to the linens, antique candlesticks and golden cutlery. The hues continue with the rose petals and gold shimmers of the cake, which sits alongside a grazing platter brimming with fruits, meats and cheese, and gold-rimmed glasses filled with red wine. A handcrafted element is woven throughout, from the macramé runners and chair accessories and handmade wooden rings to the beautifully scripted stationery rich in the wintery hues.

While the groom wears a country green suit, the bride exudes timeless romance in vintage-inspired lace gowns teamed with a bold lip and extravagant bouquet of seasonal blooms and pampas grass. Amidst the historic walls of the barn and warm glow of candlelight, it is a captivating and oh-so romantic scene for the cold depths of winter.

modern love

Natural inspiration meets industrial accents in this contemporary wedding scene in Devon’s rural heart photography Capture Weddings styling Glas Events

feature | STYLING | MODERN LOVE
68 Devon #54 2023 www.wedmagazine.co.uk

Set in a rural locale and hidden amongst Devon’s rolling hills, Deer Farm Tipi Weddings offers a blissfully secluded setting for a wedding with breathtaking views across meadows roamed by the resident deer. In this styled shoot, the venue’s off-white tipis provide a striking venue space that blurs the lines between natural and industrial.

“We wanted to showcase a modern style that complements the Devon countryside while drawing inspiration from the contemporary industrial aesthetic of the surrounding luxury accommodation and history of the farm,” explains Stacey Gray of Glas Events, who coordinated and styled the shoot. “Much consideration went into working with local, ethical small businesses and showcasing the incredible talent of those in the south-west.”

Pillar candles in glass lanterns line the aisle to an arbour, dressed in dainty white blooms, foliage and billowing drapes, that frames the scenic countryside beyond. The far-reaching views and natural textures inside the tipis provide a timeless canvas for the contemporary aesthetic, where striking black accents, which are woven throughout the décor, are softened with a soothing palette of off-whites, oatmeal and oyster. Every element of the design, from the stationery to the cake, carries the clean lines and bold use of colour.

From a crisp white gown to a black lace dress teamed with an updo, the bridal styling is simple and stylish, striking the fine balance between modern and timeless carried throughout this captivating scene.

MODERN LOVE 73

ASK THE WEDDING PLANNERS

How do I set a budget? What should I think about when choosing a styling scheme? And where do I even start with planning a wedding? We’ve asked the wedding experts to solve some of your planning dilemmas

Q: Where do I start with planning a wedding?

A: Discuss the things that are important to you both and how much you have for your wedding budget. Allocate your budget to the different areas such as venue, ceremony, catering, facilities, bar, staffing, insurance, stationery, dresses, suits, rings, hire items, décor, flowers, hair and make-up. I’m a big fan of spreadsheets to plan the day from suppliers through to budgets, timings and service provision. Do some window shopping so that you can see if what you want works with the budget you have allocated. Are there elements of your day that family and friends might like to help with? If you’re not a spreadsheet fan, you could use one of the planning apps to help you with this.

A: Start with what’s important to you both as a couple. Decide on your absolute non-negotiables –not just a wish list but the one or two things that are a must. That might be a location that means something to you, a venue you both love, a band you must have or being on the top of a snow-capped mountain if that’s what floats your boat. The rest will gradually unfold.

A: Make a cup of tea, sit down together and chat about what you both want, what you both envisage and make sure you’re both on the same page. Don’t rush anything!

Q: Are there any planning tools you would recommend?

A: Bridebook has an app for planning your wedding, which allows you to set budgets, create checklists, track progress and give you inspiration and ideas. There’s also TopTablePlanner for planning your seating plan and room layout, and Appy Couple for managing your guest list and RSVPs.

A: I’m a big Pinterest user but do try and pin with purpose – or at least try and hone down those hundreds of images to bring together the style for your day. There are also some good free table planner guides from UKbride. Table plans can be a bane of the planning process; if you have a tool that you can save and play with then you won’t get yourselves in a muddle.

A: The Moleskine wedding journal is an absolute dream! It has sections for everything you could ever

want, and if you’re booking a wedding coordinator, it’s a fab book to hand over to them as everything is in one place. I love good old Google Drive as well: you can easily share documents with your other half and suppliers, and everything is in one place.

Q: How do I set – and stick to –a wedding budget?

A: Decide what it is you want to spend on – the quality and quantity – and then get some prices to see if it will work with the budget you have allocated. Be willing to compromise on some elements to allow you to spend more on others. Get quotes on all areas of the wedding so that you can make an informed decision on what to buy.

A: You really need to know what you’re comfortable with spending, then create a payment plan and figure out how long it could take you to get there. Are you lucky enough to have help with the cost or can you set up a direct debit into a separate account that becomes your wedding account? This makes things easier to manage. We use budget planners that also mean payment terms and dates are clear for suppliers. Remember to be realistic: weddings are generally

feature | ASK THE WEDDING PLANNERS
iStock.com/Prostock-Studio 74 Devon #54 2023 www.wedmagazine.co.uk

quite expensive, even those that are considered to have been done on a budget. If budget is a concern, look at compromising on the date: out-of-season weddings can be just as beautiful and quite a bit cheaper in terms of venues and some suppliers.

A: My top tip is to scrap all the templates and create a list of priorities. Work out want you want to spend the most on: is it the flowers, venue or food? You are more likely to stick to your budget if it’s what you want to spend your money on. Also, you need to know when to stop. The wedding world has so many exciting options but ask yourself whether you need it all.

Q: Do you have any top tips for choosing a wedding venue?

A: Create a hit list of what your venue must have and what you would like it to have. Consider the style of venue, location, cost, size, facilities, accessibility and what is included in that price. Look at what other costs you might need to consider so that you can compare like for like. Create a spreadsheet with a list of your must-haves and add each venue’s details so that you can reflect on all the information after you have viewed them.

A: This comes down to what’s more important: location or the venue itself. If there’s a location that’s important to you both, then start there. If you can be flexible on location, then consider who you and your partner are as a couple: do you like a relaxed beach vibe or festival style? Or do you like the finer things in life and love a historical building? Once you know the kind of vibe you want then you’ll be able to narrow down those venues. Also consider other elements that would be important to you: for example, do you want family and friends to be able to stay on-site? If budget is an issue, find out if there’s corkage. If you want a sea view marquee wedding, then think about the type of marquee that would work for your wedding style.

A: Think about what you want from your venue; do you want somewhere with a good amount of space or maybe even different spaces so you can create ‘breakout’ rooms? Not everyone loves loud music and crowded spaces. Do you want the venue to supply the catering? If yes, make sure you like the food before booking the venue! Does the venue have recommended suppliers that you have to use? If yes, are your desired suppliers on that list?

Q: Do you have any advice for finding your wedding style?

A: Some couples have a clear vision from the get-go, while others choose their style once they have decided on their venue or the wedding dress. From this, you can choose the feel of your day and the colours that suit. Also have a think about the seasons, the feel you want to create and what colours would work well with the natural light. If you have chosen a farm or woodland venue you might choose natural tones, soft woods, off-white linens, greens and blues. If you have chosen a hotel with a coastal luxe feel you might choose to add clean crystal lines, white or coloured opulent linens, indulgent table décor and metallics touches with soft florals. Pinterest is a great place to start planning your wedding look. Create a board with the ideas you love and look at what will work within your budget to create that look.

ASK THE WEDDING PLANNERS

A: Create a Pinterest board and pin everything you love... and then hone it down so you don’t have too much to wade through! I’ve seen lots of boards that have such an eclectic mix of styles that it’s hard for the couple to really see what it is they want, so don’t feel tempted to pin every single idea. Really think about the type of people you are. Are you outdoorsy and love nature, do you want that sea view or do you want that high-end luxe vibe? Check out blogs, magazines and Instagram but also think about what’s important to you. I’ve recently had some very creative clients with different priorities and style, but they were all able to put their stamp on their day. One couple were happy to have a secondhand marquee, which they put up themselves, but when it came to the design of the day, they were very particular, down to having the tablecloths printed in their wedding design.

will need to bring to site to create your day: power, water, toilets, lighting, heating, car parking, staffing, set-up and pack down.

A: Generally, it’s the not-very-exciting logistical issues that tend to be overlooked and usually for DIY, marquee weddings. We now have a checklist for couples having this style of wedding. The catering tent is a big one. Some will need to be ordered separately and this can easily slip through the net as clients assume the tent company will automatically do this or that the catering company bring their own. It’s always worth checking.

A: Make sure you have a cake knife! Sophie Walker

Q: Is there one key piece of advice you would offer all newly engaged couples?

A: Have the items you really want and be willing to compromise. Remember the number-one thing: it is your wedding. Don’t feel overwhelmed by others wanting to help. If you have booked a DIY venue, then invest in a coordinator to take the pressure off you on the day.

Consider the parking and those who will want to drive home the night of the wedding: very often the cars are in an adjoining field with no lighting to guide them back after a long day and night of celebrating! Also, there’s often a separate catering company and bar, or some have a ‘help yourself’ bar – be aware of who’s responsible for the different glassware, otherwise you can be left with a sea of glasses that no one’s clearing away.

A: There are so many styles out there, but make sure it’s all about you. A good place to start would be your house décor, as it says a lot about you as a couple and you (hopefully!) both love it. Or perhaps start with one of your favourite holiday destinations. When it comes to palette, choose one main colour and then ‘fill the gaps’ with neutrals or paler colours, white or black. It will stop it getting too busy.

Q: Is there a wedding planning detail couples often overlook?

A: If it’s a DIY venue consider all the extra utilities you

Finally, make sure you have a plan for waste. Most field owners will want you to take your waste away. The marquee companies aren’t responsible for it. Ask your catering company and bar company if they can take their waste and ensure you have bins around so general waste is easy to dispose of the next day.

A: The age-old mantra of ‘it’s your wedding, so do you’ is very important. Having said that, I believe in putting yourselves into your guests’ shoes and considering what their experience will be like. Remember those weddings you’ve been to and felt hungry or spent hours waiting for photos to be taken –that way you can make sure things flow and everyone has a great time. Also, whilst I’m a big advocate of Pinterest and getting inspiration from other places, don’t get lost in trends as they come and go, so try not to overwhelm yourselves by packing it all in. You don’t have to have a first dance if you don’t want to and never compare your wedding to those highly glossy, Instagram weddings – just take inspiration, not stress.

Rebecca

A: Don’t forget what the day is really about: you’re marrying the love of your life. If things get forgotten, it’s not the end of the world - you have each other.

The big white wedding doesn’t naturally lend itself to being sustainable, with excess decorations, flowers and food often going to waste when the day ends. But there are ways you can lower your impact with sustainable swaps and still have the day of your dreams. Follow our eco-themed tips below and make a positive step towards a waste-free wedding day…

1. Dress to impress.

Many bridal designers create sensational gowns from ethically sourced materials that won’t only make you look incredible but will make you feel good about your choice too. Rolling in Roses (rollinginroses.co.uk) designs a range of gowns made from fabric that originates from orange fibre, while new Devon-based bridal brand Katie Woods Bridal (katiewoods.co.uk) makes each garment to order in the county with high quality fabrics from carefully selected suppliers, ensuring minimal waste and a small carbon footprint. What’s more, each piece has been designed so it can be worn again. If you’re seeking an eco-conscious pre-loved or vintage dress, Days of Grace Vintage (daysofgracevintage.com) in Budleigh Salterton is home to a spectacular range of original antique dresses from the 1900s to the 1970s. What’s more, some bridal boutiques now boast impressive eco initiatives; for example, Bliss Bridal Gowns (blissbridalgowns.co.uk) plants a tree for each dress purchased.

2. Two-for-one.

Opt for bridal separates or one outfit that offers two looks, so you can change your bridal style from day to night without the financial and environmental impact of purchasing two outfits. Bridal separates can be styled with other pieces to wear again after the big day, too.

3. Wedding wardrobe.

You could even hire your bridal gown. Brands including Hurr (hurrcollective.com) and ByRotation (byrotation.com) allow you to source your dream dress and save yourself the worry of what you’re going to do with it once you’re hitched!

4. His and hires. Instead of buying suits for each of the groomsmen, which might be left hanging at the back of the wardrobe after the wedding and eventually thrown out, look to suit companies that offer hire services.

5. Moral maids. Let your bridal party lead the way in choosing their outfits (with some guidance from you if desired!). Picking something that they love means they’re more likely to wear it again.

6. Twinkle toes. Instead of opting for a traditional bridal shoe, choose footwear that you will be able to wear again – whether that’s pretty ballerina shoes, Converse, block heels or shoes that can double up as your something blue.

7. Suitable setting. If sustainability is important to you, you’ll be naturally drawn to venues that work in an environmentally friendly way, from trying to reduce waste and recycling to farming their own crops and using solar energy. Research the venue, check it’s in line with your values and don’t be afraid to ask for any little tweaks to be made.

8. Trim back on travel. If you have chosen a venue that’s a little further to get to, organise transport for your guests. They can all meet in one central pick-up point near your hometown and be transported together on a bus to your venue.

9. Location, location, location. If you are saying “I do” in one location and then moving on to a different location for your reception, try to make sure all the venues are within walking distance, so that once guests arrive they can wander between the venues on foot.

10. Micro wedding. Enforced by the Covid pandemic, the micro wedding trend is here to stay. A reduced guest list results in an intimate atmosphere and a reduction in waste.

11. Meaningful menu. Choose a caterer that uses seasonal ingredients and locally sourced produce. This will make your wedding breakfast fresher and tastier and save transporting produce from overseas. Opting for a plated wedding breakfast over a buffet or grazing table will save on excess waste at the end of the night.

12. Plant power. Forgo cut flowers in favour of growing greenery – huge terracotta pots filled with plants lining the aisle for the ceremony will make a stunning statement. Display little lavender plants in stone urns or potted plants dotted along

trestle tables, then gift them to guests at the end of the wedding for them to grow in their garden.

13. Fresh flowers. For your bouquets, choose handtied, seasonal blooms. If you choose to opt for cut flower arrangements, ask your florist to avoid using floral foam in the displays and gift them to guests after the wedding to be loved for longer at home. Devon-based florist Emma Hewlett (emmahewlett.co.uk) now offers a British wedding flowers package, using purely locally sourced flowers and foliage grown within easy reach of her Exeter studio.

14. Conscientious confetti. For a joyful confetti moment that won’t leave bits of paper flying about afterwards choose natural, biodegradable confetti. Kehelland Trust (kehellandtrust.org.uk) is a horticultural site that produces real flower confetti. The site itself provides meaningful services for adults with additional needs, who grow the flowers from seed, harvest and process the petals onsite, to sell at wedding fairs (or call 01209 718975 to order).

15. Thoughtful favours. One thing regularly left behind at weddings is the favours. If you want to gift something individually to each of your guests, be clever with your choices. Edible treats always go down well, a lottery ticket or scratch card is fun and can be recycled, while miniature potted succulents make a sweet gift and add to your décor.

16. Sustainable stationery. Choose a stationery supplier that works in an environmentally friendly way. Opt for invitations printed with eco-solvent inks on recycled papers, or you could choose seed cards that your guests can later plant in their garden to grow wildflowers. You could even go paperless, sending e-invites instead of physical ones.

17. Decorative details. When it comes to decorating your venue, head for second hand or charity shops to reuse items such as candle holders and vases. For larger items, as well as cutlery and crockery, find a local company that offers wedding items to hire; Out of the Ordinary Event Hire (outoftheordinaryeventhire.com) has stunning wedding hire collections. Before you start sourcing décor, check what your venue supplies – you might be in luck and find they have neon signs by the dance floor, a walled garden with the perfect natural climbing rose photo backdrop or tea light candles dotted around the place already.

18. Tiers of joy. You might think you want a four-tier cake but how much of it will be eaten? Your cake maker can help you work out how much cake you need for your guest numbers to save any going to waste. If you like the height of a tiered cake, slim, tall tiers will give the same overall look (avoid polystyrene dummy tiers and instead ask for a decorative clear acrylic tier that your baker can include and reuse).

19. Jewels and gemstones. Research your jewellers and jewellery pieces, choosing lab-grown diamonds – which Drakes (drakesjewellers.co.uk) offers – or ethically sourced gemstones. Pearls are a beautiful organic and environmentally friendly choice for your bridal jewellery. Try to seek out brands that are dedicated to giving back to the planet.

20. Stick with tradition. Follow tradition and incorporate something old and something borrowed on your wedding day. As the adage goes, choosing vintage jewellery or a borrowed veil will bring you good luck on the big day, and it will help lower your environmental impact too.

THE TREND REPORT

Our favourite wedding trends, from minimalist receptions to mismatched fashions

words Hannah May

There are plenty of ways to personalise your wedding while still being in style. Simply pick from the latest trends and work them your way for a wedding day that reflects you with unique panache.

From al fresco ceremonies to mocktails and vegan menus, we’ve gathered some fresh inspiration for

couples seeking to stamp some extra (and rather en vogue) personality onto their day...

Colour happy

One of the easiest and most impactful ways to evoke mood is through your colour scheme. Though muted tones and pared-back aesthetics remain de rigueur, brights are emerging as a top way to inject some happy

into the look and feel of your day. From rainbow themed celebrations to colour pop accents and statement features, bold colour schemes can brighten a winter’s day, complement a summer shindig and instantly pique your guests’ senses. Fresh zesty tones like lemon, orange and pink grapefruit are perfect for a tropical beach party, while electric blues and fluorescent greens add a fun and futuristic energy. Pick

pastels for a vibrant vintage do, metallics for modern glamour, jewel tones for eye-catching décor or burnt shades for autumnal brilliance.

Plant-based catering

Forget the drab meat-free dishes of weddings past and instead embrace the catering movement that’s garnering popularity the world over. With the huge surge in more sustainable, planet-friendly consumption, a vegan wedding gives you the chance to give back a little – both to your guests and the environment. Whether you include one fish or meat dish alongside plant-based options – or select an exclusively vegan menu – by focusing on the food in a more considered, benevolent way, you’ll enhance your eco credentials and guarantee a flavoursome feast. Local, fresh and seasonal produce will reduce your carbon footprint for a menu as beautiful-looking and bespoke as it is mouthwatering.

Non-alcoholic cocktails

Another way to inject flavour (and style) is to pay some extra attention to your beverages. Please everyone from the kids to the teetotallers – along with anyone in need of a scrumptious thirst-quencher – by designing a non-alcoholic drinks list that looks and tastes sensational. Mix it up with iced teas, milkshakes, a smoothie bar, artisan coffee van, homemade lemonade and juices – and one of the most popular wedding trends du jour: mocktails. Customise or go classic, the lip-smacking choice is yours. Think virgin piña coladas and mojitos, gin-free G&Ts, passion fruit martinis, baby bellinis and negroni mocktails served in vintage or colourful glassware for the most delectable quaffables ever – minus the hangover!

Outdoor ceremonies

Outdoor ceremonies are one of the most wanted on couples’ wish lists. Could there be anything more romantic than uttering your vows under a giant oak to the sound of birdsong or amongst wave-lashed shores with the sand underfoot? Since it became permanently legal for civil wedding and partnership ceremonies to take place fully outdoors (at licensed venues), couples have been chomping at the bit to say “I do” in the most open plan way. Simply pick your venue, the views – et voilà: an al fresco ceremony steeped in natural beauty is yours.

Sustainable elements

Green weddings are going nowhere. Whether you’re planning a zero waste and carbon neutral event, or simply wish to save money in the most sustainable way possible, eco-friendly nuptials are fast becoming the marital must-have. From recycled and upcycled décor to plant-based catering, secondhand outfits, charitable favours and emission offsetting schemes, there’s a plethora of ways to ensure your day is as conscientious as can be.

Mismatched wedding party style

Coordinated bridal and groom party style is distinctly passé. Instead, the bride and groom are creating leading looks that stand out from the crowd, with the rest of their posse sporting eclectic outfits that reflect their individual sense of style. Picture the groom in a bright

blazer or waistcoat alongside his groomsmen in a muted version of the same tone, colour-blocking suits worn in mismatched ways or an accent hue or pattern showcased via different features such as the jacket lining, pocket square, socks, tie or waistcoat. Meanwhile, the bridesmaids can don the same colour dress in different designs or opt for matching styles in a variety of shades for instant wedding party pizzazz.

Dress and suit changes

Transformational wedding wear is all the rage. Opt for two looks in one with a cleverly layered ensemble, detachable elements or statement accessories, or dip out of proceedings midway through the day for a complete dress change. Brides can add an overskirt (with train), sleeves, statement shrug or floor-length cape to a dance floor-ready micro mini or jumpsuit. Similarly, grooms can remove their tie and DJ for their own open shirt reveal or switch their smart three-piece for a fun and fashionable outfit with colour, customisation and endless character.

Minimalist receptions

Less is the new more. Minimalism is in the throes of a renaissance, with stripped-back styling, sustainability, ‘nude’ elements and a general understated approach all forming part of the paredback aesthetic. Select a single focal point such as a statement wall, floral installation or dramatic lighting alongside neutral, natural, monochromatic or soft colour schemes. Keep tablescapes clean and simple with a few low-level floral arrangements, single blooms or sprigs of greenery accompanied by fussfree settings, while furniture should be demonstrably bare.

New florals

Revamped floristry sees everything from dramatic features to a delicate scattering of single stem buds. In line with either end of the maximalist/minimalist movements, flowers are finding new forms by way of floral backdrops and large flower clouds, arches and chandeliers or delicate pressed flower detailing and the occasional frond. Meanwhile, bridal bouquets are going big and bold with a full-on combo of colour, texture and blousy scented blooms, elegant with cascading designs or simplistic with mono toned petals, petite dried posies and bunches of seasonal wildflowers.

Lavender

With Pantone’s 2022 colour of the year Very Peri (a blue/violet hue derived from periwinkle) still making schematic waves throughout wedding receptions the world over, so too is another soft pastel shade hotly tipped to be one of the coolest colours of the year: Digital Lavender. Meanwhile, Pantone’s 2023 colour of the year has been revealed as Viva Magenta: “a signal of strength, inclusivity and self-expression... whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration.” Combine this “animated red” with a purply hue for a striking and on point scheme or pick any one of these trending shades to weave into your décor for statement-making bedazzlement.

NEW ORDER

Thinking about mixing up the timeline of your day? Go for it! From sunrise ceremonials to surprise speeches, here are some ideas for a standout celebration

You’ve nailed the venue and date, but what about the other ‘when’? The timing of your day’s events might seem predetermined by some: ceremony, drinks reception, food, speeches and party. However, like all other aspects of modern weddings, couples are defying convention by mixing up their itinerary to personally suit.

Whether you wish to host a welcome supper the night before or say “I do” at sunset, the schedule can be planned to make the most of the time, place and people at your disposal for a distinctively unique wedding format.

Don’t fancy waiting for the speeches? Deliver them during the welcome drinks. Dying for your first dance? Grab your spouse post-ceremony for the ultimate party starter. We’ve compiled some of our favourite ideas…

Pre-wedding gatherings

Schedule an extra pre-wedding soirée with your guests, whether as a grand gathering or intimate greeting for close family or friends who have travelled from afar. The day or evening before allows anyone helping with the preparations a rewarding break and additional mingling time, while an evening shindig sets the celebratory mood ahead of the main event. Depending on your venue (and where your guests are staying), you might wish to arrange afternoon tea, drinks and nibbles, a takeaway or a sit-down supper. You could also plan a walk, surf, spa session, beach barbecue or activity in keeping with the location and theme of your wedding, blow off some steam and ease the pre-wedding nerves – so think about what you and your nearest might like to see/do/eat – and go for it!

Sunrise weddings

A cultural custom for some across the globe, sunrise weddings are the ultimate way to embrace your day from start to finish and extend the time you have together. In summer, it might seem daunting to wake and get ready in the middle of the night, but imagine uttering your vows as the sun rises from the ocean or appears on the hillside. Especially suited to elopement or intimate weddings, you might want to stage a small sun-up ceremony in the company of others or alone before joining guests to celebrate, or invite everyone to experience the moment with you. The logistics will require a little more effort to ensure your ceremony space is well placed (and permitted) to take advantage of the emerging light and guests can safely find their way in the pre-dawn darkness, but the result could be incredible. And by scheduling some downtime in the day to allow guests to rest and refuel for the party ahead, you can ensure that they’ll have no problems going the full distance from dawn to dusk.

First looks

Though some may still believe that seeing each other before the ceremony is bad luck, other couples are choosing to appoint some private time before their vows for a sneaky ‘first look’. The exclusive chance to see your beloved in all their wedified glory before the rest of the crowd is fast garnering mass appeal, and

NEW ORDER 87

the sweet courtesy is now being extended to other family members such as parents, siblings and grandparents to poignantly mark the occasion in a wholly personal way.

Speeches

There’s no modern etiquette when it comes to the speeches. Tradition dictates that there should be one by the groom, best man and father of the bride, but nowadays you can have as many as you like – or none at all. Bridal speeches are all the rage, along with others stepping up to say a few words including the maid of honour, mother of the bride/groom and even the grandparents or children. Scatter them throughout proceedings, perhaps with the father of the bride saying something postceremony, the groom’s orations being delivered ahead of the first dance and the best man

sharing stories over the firepit. The bride might like to announce a toast during the wedding breakfast or incorporate a speech into the ceremony itself. Pick a place, time, person and wording – or randomly assign the speaking roles and ask for them to be delivered spontaneously for a fun surprise.

Wedding breakfasts

Depending on what time of day you tie the knot, you might want one or several food stops to keep your guests’ appetites at bay. Whether you wish to make a feature out of the food or simply provide a decent belly fill between the day’s events, you can present the wedding breakfast at any time. If you’re hosting a morning ceremony, an early lunch may be required, dine with your guests before an afternoon or evening ceremony or serve them

an afternoon tea, picnic or barbecue before the nuptials and organise a late supper or buffet. Or you could always ditch the formal dining in favour of hampers, food vans and food stations dotted throughout the day.

Twilight weddings

Sunset weddings are one of the most romantic options. Save the main event for last after schmoozing all afternoon or – depending on the time of year and, therefore, sundown – dine with your guests before spoiling them with a twilight wedding as you bid farewell to the day in the most magical of ways. Picture a sandbetween-the-toes ceremony as the sun slips beneath the sea or walking a lantern-lined aisle on a windswept winter’s night as the last light fades. Could there be anything more magically atmospheric?

Your wedding stationery is often your guests’ first taste of your wedding styling, so impress them with designs that wow.

Naturally, your personality and taste will be the deciding factor when it comes to choosing your wedding stationery, but there are other influences that will impact your decision. Where you wed, the season you are tying the knot, your budget and new styling trends are all factors that will guide your stationery selection.

Here, Becci Clubb, founder and designer of ABCD (abcd-weddings.co.uk) shares her predictions for next year’s wedding stationery trends and influences…

All in the detail

From silk ribbons to twine and personalised stickers to wax seals, the current trend for luxury details is here to stay. The little details make all the difference for couples wanting to make an impression with their wedding stationery, by allowing them to create a unique look with the designs they select. This year ABCD have introduced wax seals, fine threads and vellum sleeves to their collections, which already include personalised tags, ribbons, twine and foiling. The fashion for adding finer details also plays a part in on-the-day wedding styling. Think printed menus displayed at each place setting, or framed quotes designed to match the overall wedding theme dotted around the venue.

Bold brights

Wider trends have an impact on wedding styling and we are seeing lots of rich jewel-like tones on the fashion scene as we enter 2023. Key colours will filter into bridal trends and classic white wedding details will be injected with pops of colour, from bold red tones to vivid mustard yellows and elegant emerald greens. We expect to see stationery designs with splashes of gemstone colours; whether a floral stationery set featuring lots of bright colours or a simple design with just one or two bold hues, this trend will make your wedding day details stand out from the crowd!

It’s about you!

Following the Covid pandemic, it has become more important than ever for couples to celebrate their love in their own unique ways. From writing your own vows to serving signature cocktails at your drinks reception, personalisation will be a key trend for 2023 weddings as couples strive to make their wedding all about them. In terms of stationery, this includes choosing bespoke designs, adding a personal logo or monogram, and using your initials throughout your stationery suite.

Elaborate envelopes

Gone are the days when an envelope was just a way of holding a selection of papers together. Envelopes are becoming an important part of the stationery suite in their own right. Elegant printed envelope liners that match the invitations are hugely popular at ABCD, along with personalised stickers to seal them. The envelope has become a considered part of stationery design, with decorative postage stamps, calligraphy lettering and wax seals lending themselves to the look.

Going green

As people try to make ethical and ‘green’ choices more and more in daily life, eco-conscious couples are looking for responsible suppliers that work sustainably for their wedding day, too. From flower petal confetti to bridal gowns made from recycled plastic bottles pulled out of the ocean (check out the Jesus Peiro Amalia collection), couples are choosing to select suppliers that consider their environmental impact.

At ABCD, nature and our environment are our biggest source of inspiration and we try to do all that we can to protect them. Our paper products are all FSC certified, which means they come from carefully managed forests, and the inks we use are eco-solvent ensuring our stationery is suitable for conventional recycling. All our designs are made to order, meaning we don’t hold or throw away any unsold stock. When couples contact us, they have the freedom to choose from a selection of paper stocks including recycled card or they can have their design supplied digitally for them to send e-invites.

Barely-there

Echoing sheer fabrics in bridal wear, transparent and translucent stationery is set to be a big trend for the new year. We’ve seen the popularity of acrylic invitations rise, and couples are predicted to turn to vellum stationery details for 2023. Giving a similar visual effect as acrylic, vellum is kinder to the environment and kinder to your budget too. Used as the invitation itself or as a sleeve holding your invitation packs in one neat bundle, vellum adds a new dimension to traditional paper stationery design.

Purple power

Pantone’s colour of the year for 2022 was Very Peri, a pretty periwinkle shade that we expect to work its way into wedding details for 2023. While the colour for 2023 is Viva Magenta, Digital Lavender - another purple shade - was a hot favourite. We are expecting to see colour schemes that include both purple tones, with pops of periwinkle dispersed through lavender details. A nod toward the hues with splashes of purples in your stationery designs will ensure your wedding is bang on-trend.

Shape shifter

Along with bespoke stationery designs helping to create a unique wedding day look, unusual shapes will be another trend for 2023. Invitations and table numbers will be designed in varying shapes, from oval to hexagon. Stepping away from rectangular designs and choosing something more unique gives a modern edge to the wedding styling.

When it comes to choosing your wedding stationery the endless options can be a little unnerving – especially for the overthinkers among us. To make the right choice for you, opt for a design that’s in keeping with your wedding theme, check that your products are manufactured sustainably and post pretty papers that you would be thrilled to receive!

THE GENERATION GAMES

Lego, dominoes and chess. Not what you might immediately think of when it comes to wedding planning, but bear with us. Wedding guests can often span the decades in age from newborns to nonagenarians. So, you need to plan a day that caters to everyone’s ages and personalities. Yes, it’s easy to set up a craft station for the young (and young at heart!) but what about games that guests from every age can enjoy together? Here are some of our favourite ways for guests to play on your wedding day, whatever their age.

Board games

With chess clubs being popular in schools, children as young as five can master the checkerboard as well as granny who may have been playing for decades. Either set up a chess station where guests can take it in turns to play, à la The Queen’s Gambit, or hire a giant chessboard for outside play. We were recently wowed by a couple who played human chess using their guests

as the pieces on an outdoor chessboard. Of course, the bride and groom were the king and queen, and other guests took their places as the other pieces. But it doesn’t have to be chess. Draughts, dominoes and even Lego building can be accomplished whatever your age.

Another idea that’s trending right now is a bespoke puzzle – an image of the happy couple made into a jigsaw, for example. Guests are then asked to complete the puzzle throughout the day so each guest can put a puzzle piece or two (or hundreds, depending on the size of your jigsaw!) into place. Puzzles and board games will also ensure any guests who are less mobile or unable to stand for long periods feel they have really participated in the day without having to move far.

Racquet games

Although probably not ideal for your very young guests, wedding badminton could fit nicely into an outdoor reception space for those of school age and

above. You could keep a league table so guests can play each other sporadically throughout the day and then move their name up or down the chart according to who has won. The player at the top of the chart at the end of the day can then be crowned Wed-minton Winner! The same can be done with table tennis, too. Younger guests could oversee the league table and even announce the winner.

Arcade games

Hiring retro arcade games and tabletop games like pinball and table football will ensure your guests young and old are catered for. You could even decorate your games area in vintage styling for the older generation. Or, if you have the space, you could have games and entertainment through the ages, starting with the likes of a coin pusher or a Punch and Judy puppet show and moving on to ‘80s style games such as Pacman and more recent games such as Arcade Hoops Basketball. Your guests could then meander through your arcade

of the ages, reminiscing about the games they used to play or trying out something new.

Lucky dip

Mobility issues – either young (toddling over) or old (needing a hand to stand) – won’t be relevant when it comes to a mobile lucky dip. Ask a responsible member of your wedding party to walk around your reception with a lucky dip box and ask your guests to have a dig around to see what they can find. This is a great game for grandparents and grandchildren to do together and should make for some wonderful photography: cue surprised faces please! Prizes could include personalised fortune cookies, luxury marshmallows or macarons, or even a voucher for a drink of your choice from the bar. The lucky dip idea can be used in place of favours, too.

Spinning wheel

A wedding spin-the-wheel is sure to cause hilarity and chaos in equal measure. Either team up in pairs (one spins and one calls out or completes the action) or let people spin and call at random. Ideas for the spinning wheel include forfeits, dares (sensible ones!), treats or just wedding-worthy suggestions like ‘now kiss the bride’ or ‘dance with the maid of honour’.

Name That Tune

Another game that spans the generations is the allinclusive Name That Tune. Ask your DJ or, if you’re not having one, a willing member of the wedding party. You could split your guests into teams with each team having someone from every age bracket in their team (e.g. 0-15, 15-30, 30-45, 45-60, 60+). The host then plays the first few seconds of a

selection of songs and each team must try and guess the song. The team with the most correct answers wins.

World records

Pre-teens are likely to love this one. Choose as many random world records as you can and see if any of your guests can be record-breakers on your big day. Examples include: how many hops can you do on a pogo stick? How long can you keep a hula hoop spinning? What’s the highest number of keepie-uppies you can do with a balloon? You get the idea. Using simple props and non-dangerous world record attempts, this should keep guests who love a challenge – whatever their age – busy. And you never know, your wedding day may also produce a brand new world record!

COUNTRY HOUSES & CASTLES

Live out your very own fairytale in one of Devon’s elegant country houses or majestic castles

Pynes House

Believed to be the inspiration for Jane Austen’s Barton Park in ‘Sense and Sensibility’, this elegant Georgian house provides the most breathtaking location for your very own love story. Set within 37 acres of parkland in the Exe Valley, the glorious gardens hint at the immaculate interiors, where you can marry in a choice of state rooms, all bathed in natural light and exquisitely styled. For dizzying romance, take your vows before the grand doors on the entrance steps with the majestic tree-lined avenue and gardens as your backdrop, before feasting and dancing the night away beneath the sparkling chandeliers of the Ballroom or, for larger affairs, in a marquee in the grounds. Romantic details such as the Romeo and Juliet-style balcony and the myrtle bush in the rose garden, which is believed to have grown from a clipping from Queen Victoria’s bridal bouquet, add to the dreaminess, while the beautiful bedrooms make for an incredibly special place to spend the night.

Bickleigh Castle

This is the place for a wedding rich in history. Beyond the stirring charm of the 11th century Norman castle, with its Great Hall complete with minstrels’ gallery and roaring log fire, there’s the 6th century chapel, Devon’s oldest building, and a truly enchanting setting for a blessing. The grounds are equally fairytale-worthy – the River Exe runs through the estate’s 1,000 acres of lush landscape and wooded valleys, while a cluster of cosy thatched cottage accommodation creates the feel of a wedding village. Kick-start the festivities with a Friday night feast; get married in the garden pavilion before dancing under the stars in the expansive grounds, with fireworks shimmering on the river. The next day, it’s all too easy to continue the festivities with a tasty brunch and fun on the croquet lawn and tennis court. bickleighcastle.com

The grounds offer dreamlike backdrops for ceremonies – choose from the American Garden where a garden pavilion is set amidst a glade of exotic trees; the Belvedere, an 18th century tower with panoramic views across the estate and estuary; and the Victorian Rose Garden, where you can marry amidst a castle backdrop and the scent of roses.

Beautiful love stories from across Devon

Only Love

Love blossomed for Jess and Ruth across a shopfloor one summer in North Devon. Ruth was in Braunton taking care of her Nana when she met Jess at Saltrock, where they were both working for the summer months. “Ruth and I got to know each other and knew we’d each found ‘the one’. Ruth went back to university in Carlisle and I went on to teacher training,” recalls Jess. “Eventually – a year and a bit later – Ruth moved down to Devon!”

Inspired by Ruth’s love for the Lake District, Jess planned the perfect proposal while rowing on the lakes, using her own Gran’s ring that she’d had repurposed for the occasion. “Ruth was shocked – but said yes!” she smiles.

“We have always been inspired by the sea,” Ruth says of the couple’s inspiration behind their wedding. “We wanted a coastal coral vibe, with hints of an Ibizan summer evening.” Shades of coral, turquoise, pinks and gold were used to achieve the look, much of which was handmade by Jess.

“I made place names using stones from the beach, a surfboard guest book and the menu and programme; I also hand-painted the seating plan on a mirror and hand-dried confetti,” she says of her DIY details.

Both Jess and Ruth were accompanied down the aisle by their parents, greeting each other with tears before uttering their own vows. “We sang Ho Hey by The Lumineers with our bridesmaids playing tambourines to the beat!” exclaims Jess, who then danced back down the aisle with Ruth under a shower of confetti.

Guests played an assortment of games before a feast including garlic and lemon chicken skewers, gourmet beef burgers, halloumi and sweet chilli skewers, and pulled pork with a selection of sides.

The speeches provided a particularly memorable moment, with best woman Jenny delivering a speech before Jess and Ruth stood up to share some words with their guests together. With day turning to night, the couple “danced in the sunset and cried with happiness” before returning for the evening’s shenanigans, which included sparklers, s’mores and the first dance to Ben Howard’s Only Love. “We then partied to some classic Ibiza tunes and songs from RuPaul’s Drag Race!” says Ruth.

With so much to take in, then, what was their favourite moment of the day? “We loved every minute as we had taken time to make a lot of the day ourselves,” reflects Jess. “We walked down the aisle to P!nk’s Glitter in the Air played on guitar and violin. It was beautifully played and meant a lot to us both,” she adds.

Celebrating the acceptance of their love for each other was a hugely significant dimension of their day. “As a gay couple, it was important for us to be accepted and show our love as a couple to the world,” says Ruth. “Our bridesmaids bought us little LGBT heart badges to all wear on the day and our best woman’s speech reiterated that being accepted isn’t always the experience had by the queer community, and to celebrate the support and unconditional love that is with us that day.”

“Little and often – as it creeps up so quickly!” is Jess’s top note of advice when it comes to planning. “And do not get upset over those who cannot make it – the wedding is for you and there will be so much love around you on the day.”

“We loved looking out from the top table and seeing all our friends and family having a great day in the sunshine!”

You Are My Sunshine

The sun shone down on Dani and Charlie’s relaxed marquee wedding in an idyllic corner of Devon

Her sister’s wedding day proved to be particularly special for Dani – for she met her future husband, Charlie, there! Some years after that momentous day, the couple were taking a walk along the estuary in their hometown when Charlie surprised Dani with a proposal as the sun was setting.

As planning began for their own wedding, there was one date that stood out to them: they wanted to get married on the anniversary of the day they met, seven years earlier.

Choosing a marquee wedding in the village of Ashcombe, Dani and Charlie’s styling theme was very simple, with lots of greenery and neutral tones, but as planning continued, the couple found themselves calling the theme Botanical and the Beast! “It was a joke, but we wanted to emulate the romantic setting of a grand ballroom that had been overgrown by nature,” says Dani. “We came up with all the styling ideas ourselves and then put together a mood board.”

The big day arrived and the sun shone on the happy couple as they were pronounced husband and wife at the village’s hilltop 12th century church. Dani wore a structured Jesus Peiro gown replete with deep V and trailing veil, while her bridesmaids brought the glitz in bejewelled champagne dresses and matching monogrammed clutch bags. Completing the glamorous picture, Charlie and his groomsmen looked dapper in tailcoats and top hats.

“After the ceremony, some guests walked down to the marquee on the green, as it was a beautiful day, and others took a ride in a spruced-up farmer’s trailer,” says Dani.

A drinks and canapé reception followed, with live music throughout the afternoon. Their location, on the village green in front of Ashcombe Village Club, meant the guests were in the perfect spot to enjoy some lawn games. Throwing themselves into cricket and boules, some friends and family even found a rope swing across the local stream.

The wedding breakfast, which included dishes such as spicy jackfruit pie and creamy coconut pie, led to the couple’s favourite moment. “We loved looking out from the top table and seeing all our friends and family having a great day in the sunshine!” recalls Dani.

As the sun went down, evening guests arrived to espresso martinis and mojitos, before the dancing began. Having taken lessons in the lead-up to their wedding, Dani and Charlie wowed their guests with a surprise first dance routine to Candy by Paolo Nutini. “We loved learning our first dance with Bernie at Teign Valley Dance and had so much fun dancing on the day!” says Dani.

“The party then kicked off with everyone on the dance floor and two massive sets from ska band, Ska Wars!” she continues. As darkness fell guests gathered around a firepit on hay bales and made their own s’mores: the perfect end to a fun-filled day.

And for those who are busily planning their own big day, Dani has some bride-to-bride advice. “Don’t worry about others’ expectations,” she says. “Enjoy the day doing it the way you want to!”

Love

Beautiful blooms in a palette of warm autumnal colours set the scene for Kat and Josh’s wedding in the Devon countryside

Although Kat and Josh met at school, some years passed before their paths crossed again with a chance encounter in their local town. “Josh took my number and then got in touch asking me out on a dog walk,” says Kat. “It wasn’t long before we were inseparable.”

It was during a particularly memorable dog walk on a winter’s night that Josh asked Kat to marry him in the pouring rain. “It was the most amazing surprise and I was caught completely off guard,” she smiles.

Bradstone Manor Farm was the venue of choice for the couple’s “whimsical, romantic, rustic and autumnal” themed celebrations. “We have always loved September as a month and we wanted to display ‘summer on the turn’ with a gorgeous palette of burnt oranges, peaches, dusty pinks and earthy tones of browns, beiges and greens,” explains Kat.

As a florist, Kat was keen to create a statement with her blooms, which took the stunning form of two large beam installations. “We wanted our guests to feel like they were sitting in amongst the flowers and foliage,” she explains. Elegant taper candles, brass holders and beautiful napkins and place cards featuring individually pressed flowers made by Josh’s mum completed the scene, while stationery with illustrations featuring nods to the couple’s loves – from wellies and walking boots to coffee mugs and their dog – added a personalised touch.

A celebrant-led ceremony in the enchanting grounds of Bradstone Manor proved the standout moment of the day for the couple. “Walking down the aisle with my dad was a really special moment, especially seeing how happy Josh was at the end of the aisle,” recalls Kat. The newly-weds then made a memorable entrance to their drinks reception on a 1950s Ferguson T0-20 tractor.

Canapés were served in the courtyard before sharing platters were presented in the barn, treating guests to topside of beef, gammon and homemade scotch eggs alongside Davidstow cheddar cheese, stilton, St Endellion Brie and an assortment of sides. A trio of puddings – chocolate pots, lemon meringue pie and banoffee pie – further fuelled guests for the party ahead.

“Our guests loved getting involved in the photo booth, and the venue provided a skittles alley and pool table, which certainly brought out our friends’ competitive sides,” laughs Kat of the evening entertainment. Guests gathered for a barbecue, drinks around the firepit and a fireworks display, while live band The Shrine ensured the dance floor was packed until the early hours.

Looking back, it’s the sheer joy of the occasion that stands out in Kat’s mind. “Everyone was so happy. It felt like everyone was ‘drunk on love’ as we were all just soaking up the live music, great food and amazing company,” she says. “The few days before was also something that really stood out to us. The amount of family and friends who came together to help make it so special was incredible and we shall be forever thankful.”

And as for any newly-wed words of wisdom? “It’s never too early to get in touch with your favourite suppliers, especially as couples often book their wedding a year or two in advance,” she advises. “And make sure your day reflects the pair of you. The beauty of today’s weddings is that anything goes and it’s your chance to celebrate spending the rest of your lives together.”

The Colour of Love

Manasa and Albin’s wedding was a relaxed beachside affair on the coast of North Devon

Having met at college and been together ever since, Albin popped the question to Manasa at Heathrow Airport on her return from India. Saying yes sparked their search for a wedding venue, which led them to Arches Beach Weddings in Combe Martin. The superorganised couple planned their wedding in less than three months, choosing a glorious summer’s day with the coast of North Devon providing a dream canvas of blue seas and skies.

While Manasa wore a dazzling sari and Albin donned a pale blue suit, the bridesmaids carried the day’s pastel palette in soft shades of pink, which echoed the dainty blooms of the bridal bouquet. “We asked our parents to wear traditional wear in vibrant colours to bring a little bit of home with us on our day,” explains Manasa.

With the seascape beyond and the sunlight streaming into the room, the couple took their vows. “We had a beautiful ceremony. Everyone was so happy around us, we were ecstatic,” says Manasa of the ceremonials that included a personal hand-fasting and a unity sand ceremony. “We all walked along the beach after the ceremony, just dancing and taking pictures.” Colourful smoke bombs carried the palette of the celebrations and created some beautiful photo opportunities, before their guests sat down for a veritable feast.

The couple opted for an Italian-inspired menu, with starters of smoked salmon and lime mascarpone, brie and red onion confit, and heirloom tomato bruschetta, followed by linguini pasta pescatore, chicken saltimbocca, majare con pepperoni, and aubergine parmigiana, served with an assortment of salads. Dessert was a real delight, comprising affogato, panna cotta, tiramisu and cheesecake –washed down with glasses of prosecco of course!

After dinner, as their guests danced, the newly-weds had some time away from the celebrations to give them a chance to take it all in. “Our favourite moment was when just the two of us walked along the beach during sunset,” remembers Manasa fondly. “We looked around and saw our friends and family laughing and talking around us. Both of us looked at each other and Albin smiled and said: ‘We made it.’”

After such a relaxed and love-filled day, what are Manasa’s top tips for other busily planning couples? “Make a checklist of your priorities and shop local with your suppliers if you can,” she says. “Always do last-minute checks on dresses, accessories and travel, and talk to your photographer, videographer and make-up artist at least two days before the event if you are planning a destination wedding as we were.” And her number one tip? “Most important of all, don’t forget to sit back, relax and enjoy your beautiful day.”

Dream Come True

A chance meeting on a night out in Derby led to romance for Megan and David and, four years after their first encounter, David staged an “absolutely perfect” proposal in Megan’s parents’ home. He then proceeded to whisk Megan and their families to London where they spent the evening celebrating at the restaurant the couple had visited on their first weekend away together. “We’re so close with our families, so it was the dream proposal to have them with us during that moment and to revisit somewhere from the start of our relationship,” reflects Megan.

Wedding planning then took centre stage. “We knew we wanted a manor house and Rockbeare Manor was elegant, glamorous and timeless – exactly what we wanted our wedding to be!” she says. Choosing a palette of white, green, champagne and gold to match the décor of the venue, the flowers played a key role in the styling. Dramatic arrangements of orchids, hydrangeas, roses, gypsophila and wild greenery adorned the celebration spaces of the venue, beautifully framing the key moments, from the ceremony to the wedding breakfast. “I must admit – the flowers were my favourite detail on the day!” she says.

Megan tried on 26 dresses before finding ‘the one’: a beautiful sleeved gown with an overskirt so she could change her look for the evening. Her shoes, however, were an easy decision, having set her sights on a pair of Jimmy Choo heels five years earlier! It was worth the wait, with her wedding day beginning with a ‘first look’ with her dad. “I’m an only child and super close with my parents, so having this moment with my dad is something I’ll never forget,” she says. “We were both so teary!”

The ceremony was one of the couple’s favourite parts of the day. “It was so personal to us and we enjoyed every minute,” says Megan, who was serenaded by singer Abi Phillips as she walked down the aisle. “There was lots of emotion, but also some laughs and funny points. The room felt so intimate and it was special to share this moment with our friends and family.”

After the vows, guests enjoyed drinks and canapés to a live soundtrack from The Dragonflies. “The sun was shining and it was such a good vibe!” recalls Megan. Adding personal touches throughout their day, the paper napkins for the canapés featured ‘five funny facts about the bride and groom’, while the table napkins on the gorgeously styled tables had each guest’s name ironed onto the corners, hand-tied with a silk ribbon.

The wedding breakfast was a veritable feast, featuring the likes of goat’s cheese mousse, fillet of beef with gratin dauphinoise and warm chocolate fondant, while buttermilk chicken slider burgers and fries went down a treat during the evening celebrations.

Saxophone player Ellie Sax kicked off the evening revelry in style. “She was amazing! It felt like a real party, which is exactly what we wanted, and it was great to see all our friends and family enjoying this with us. Even the grandmas were up on the dance floor!” says Megan.

“It was the happiest day of our lives and we couldn’t stop smiling from start to finish,” she says, reflecting on their dreamlike day. “Everything was perfect and we want to thank the venue and our amazing suppliers.” She is replete with advice for couples at the planning stage. “Work out your priorities and get those suppliers and details booked first. Focus on one detail each week in the six-month lead-up to the wedding so that you don’t get overwhelmed.”

She adds: “Don’t panic about the little things. On the day, you are in such an amazing bubble. It really does all work out as you’d hoped.”

Dance With Me

remember

Lucy and Stephen met and fell in love during their first month of studying at medical school 12 years ago, and it was while they were in the Australian town of Byron Bay that Stephen popped the question. “The proposal was overlooking one of our favourite beaches, the day before we left Byron after living there for two years,” says Lucy.

Choosing the idyllic Arts and Crafts setting of Coombe Trenchard on the edge of Dartmoor as their wedding venue, Lucy and Stephen decided on an autumn date with a colour scheme of warm seasonal hues to match. The décor had an eclectic vintage feel, featuring many pieces from the collections of the venue’s owner, Sarah Marsh, who also grew the blooms for the wildly beautiful arrangements. Lucy’s intricately beaded bridal gown by Eliza Jane Howell echoed the vintage accents in the styling, while the bridesmaids’ terracotta dresses reflected the rich autumnal palette.

“Stephen’s sister handmade tie pins, necklaces and cufflinks out of brass for the wedding party, and it was a beautiful addition and really complemented the colours and theme,” says Lucy, who also got stuck into some crafting by making little pots as favours.

While she enjoyed the morning of the wedding preparing for the celebrations with her mum and bridesmaids at Coombe Trenchard, Stephen and his groomsmen relaxed in the sunshine at nearby Lewtrenchard Manor. “We had a leisurely morning with drinks and a lovely lunch before everyone gathered in the minstrel gallery for our afternoon ceremony,” says Lucy.

One of the most cherished moments of the day came courtesy of Lucy’s friend Nadia acting as their celebrant. “Having one of our closest friends marry us was truly so special, and she did an incredible job,” she says. “It made the wedding so personal to us, but also it could have started her celebrant career to be honest!”

After the ceremony, guests were treated to reception drinks on the terrace, which included a round of bespoke Dartmoortini cocktails amid garden games and mingling.

Dressed in homegrown florals, long stem candles and crystal glassware, the scenic coach house was the setting for the wedding breakfast. Guests savoured a feast of Westcountry charcuterie board, braised beef shin, and hake with Café de Paris sauce alongside new potatoes and vegetables, rounded off with a plum and cardamom crumble for dessert.

Moving back into the main house, it was time for the cutting of the cake and speeches, before more cocktails were served on the Italian terrace. “Having two rounds of cocktails really got the party started and we had a pretty wild dance floor until midnight, with a few moments that won’t be forgotten!” says Lucy, looking back on their celebrations fondly. “Seeing our family and friends on the dance floor together made the day.”

When it comes to advice for other couples planning their wedding, Lucy says: “Don’t get caught up in others’ ideas and opinions – make sure you stick to what you want! And although it can be a bit overwhelming, the planning is soon over and you’ll miss it, so try to take time to enjoy it together.”

Meeting at university, Verity and James were good friends before becoming a couple in their third year. “James proposed at a Japanese botanical garden by a waterfall, with a haiku he wrote,” says Verity. “We like a lot of elements of the Japanese culture, so this was a lovely backdrop for our proposal.”

Choosing a wedding venue was an easy decision. “We were extremely fortunate to have our whole day in the beautiful garden of James’ parents’ home in Broadclyst,” says Verity. “They are incredible amateur gardeners and have spent a lot of their time reviving the garden to its former glory.”

The picturesque setting inspired their bright and beautiful styling. “The garden is so full of colour, I wanted to reflect that in the rest of the day,” says Verity of the rainbow of colours that carried from the flowers and trailing ribbons of the bouquets to the signage and stationery. “We also made and hung hundreds of pom-poms from a large tree in the centre of the garden, and my final colourful DIY dream come true was draping ribbons from the marquee roof.”

There were also nods to Japanese culture, with 1,000 handmade origami cranes made by the couple and their mums hanging from the roof of the marquee. Continuing with the handcrafted theme, Verity made her own headband from freshwater pearls and crystal beads, as well as the bridesmaids’ headbands and men’s buttonholes, while she and her bridesmaids made their bouquets with flowers and foliage from the garden.

Getting legally married at the registry office a few days prior meant their friend Danny could be the ‘celebrant’ at the ceremony in front of a stunning wisteria walkway. After the vows, there were photos and garden games in the sunshine, before moving into the marquee for champagne and afternoon tea, while Verity’s bridesmaid Chess serenaded everyone. In the evening they cut the cake – made by James’ auntie – and had speeches, before the pizza and taco food vans arrived!

It was just before the couple’s first dance that Verity remembers a particularly fond memory. “James and I went into the house and watched out of a window that overlooks the garden, to just take it all in,” she says. “We had a moment to ourselves and let it sink in that we did this amazing thing and all our favourite people were here to celebrate it with us.”

The first dance – which was choreographed by Verity’s sister to Baby It’s You by London Grammar –led to an evening of dance floor fillers. “I remember bouncing around on the dance floor and one of our favourite songs came on,” says Verity. “We were dancing together surrounded by our best friends – I felt like I was in a movie and all I could really see was James.”

After their dream wedding, what would be the couple’s advice to others? “Ask for help: don’t try to do everything on your own,” says Verity. “The huge collaborative effort from our families and close friends to bring everything together was so special – it really felt like a day for all of us, which I love.”

Forever and Ever

Milly and Edd’s weekend wedding featured fun, food and much merriment at her family home

Childhood sweethearts Milly and Edd met at school at the tender age of 13 before later becoming a couple at 17 – “and have been together ever since!” she exclaims. Edd planned the perfect proposal for Milly, who is a jeweller, at Old Harry’s Rock in Dorset. “He asked me to marry him with three loose salt and pepper diamonds to create and design my own engagement ring,” she reveals of the sweetly romantic moment.

Choosing the church where Milly’s parents were married led to many poignant moments on the day. “I was really nervous for the church, walking in and saying our vows in front of so many people, but both Edd and I agreed it was one of our favourite parts of the day,” says Milly. “My grandfather did a reading that was very special, and Edd’s groomsmen formed a guard of honour for when we came out of the church, which was a lovely surprise.”

A marquee reception at Milly’s parents’ house followed. “We arrived five minutes before everyone else, which I would really recommend, as it gave us a chance to breathe and chat about the service,” she says. Rather than adopting a specific style, the couple selected a series of handmade elements for a personalised feel together with beautiful arrangements of crisp white florals and foliage. “We wanted everything to look very natural and ‘us’,” explains Milly. “I made the bespoke jewellery, including our wedding bands that were made from an old bracelet of my mum’s that we melted down. My earrings were hoops with salt and pepper diamonds set in the pebbles.”

Her cousin created all the stationery, from the invitations to the table numbers, while Milly and Edd bought bay trees and herbs that they placed in terracotta pots and scattered throughout. “I liked the idea of the plants being used again after the day,” she says. “We have repotted a lot of them and given some to family and friends to remember the day.”

Guests gathered at Milly’s parents’ house for canapés and a live saxophonist, after which the speeches were delivered before the wedding breakfast “so the boys could all relax”. Spinach, goat’s cheese and red onion pithivier was followed by sirloin of beef served with herby new potatoes and green salad. A smorgasbord of sweets rounded off the feast in the delectable form of dark chocolate and rum truffles, milk chocolate and salted caramel choux buns, and strawberries dipped in white chocolate.

“We wanted the rest of the evening to be really relaxed and informal. We didn’t have a first dance or any other staged events after the speeches. It really was a perfect day; I danced for the rest of the night,” she says of the evening’s laidback but fun shenanigans.

The following day continued the celebratory mood with a barbecue and drinks, “which was so fun! I would honestly relive the day in a heartbeat if I could!” reminisces Milly.

“Choose what you want, and your own style, and enjoy everything,” she urges other couples. “We made a thing of all the planning so we celebrated throughout, not just on the day. Even when it came to choosing the candle colours, mum and I would have an evening together with a glass of wine! It made the whole year so special and spread out the fun.”

Plan a so-you celebration with these top tips from the wedding gurus. This issue, we look at ideas for making your ceremony special

NOTES ON A WEDDING

Consider your surroundings.

Getting married in your dream outdoor location – whether it’s an ancient woodland or a clifftop overlooking the sea – has become easier now, so think outside the box. Jessica

Write your own vows.

This is a lovely way to openly express how you feel for each other, what you mean to each other and what the marriage and union means to you both. Hazel

Sounds good.

Live music at a ceremony elevates the guest experience. You could choose a live guitarist, a harpist, saxophonist, string trio playing contemporary songs, or my personal favourite, a gospel choir to serenade you down the aisle. Jessica

Include your loved ones.

Incorporate a nod to your nearest and dearest in your bridal outfit. You could wear your mum’s veil, have part of her wedding dress included in yours or even incorporate the favourite flowers of all the special women in your life in your veil design. Sophie

Create your own traditions.

From walking down the aisle together, physically tying a knot and passing the rope to all your wedding party to planting a tree, a sand ceremony, group song, prayer or blessing, have a think about what you’d really love in your ceremony. Hazel

Choose a celebrant.

Celebrant-led wedding ceremonies enable you to curate a highly personalised ceremony with your own choice of words, songs and vows. It also makes it even more special if you have a family member or friend who can conduct the ceremony. Jessica

All in this together.

Ask family and friends to meet and greet, and formally seat everyone; use their skills to create a beautiful and memorable celebration. Hazel

Don’t just fill time.

Sometimes the short and sweet ceremonies are the best. Only include the unique elements that make it yours and highlight you both and your relationship. Sophie

Stay cool.

If you’re holding your wedding in the summer, considering having fresh water available for guests and ask your stationer to create ceremony programs in the shape of fans for a pretty and practical touch. Jessica

So-you styling.

Use décor to create a stunning backdrop for your wedding; choose colours, textures and tones to add to the look and feel you like. Remember to think about how the ceremony backdrop will frame your photos. Hazel

Love bubble.

As an alternative to confetti, hand out bottles of bubbles to create a romantic and super-fun photo moment.

Jessica

Pets galore.

I love it when couples include their pets in their wedding ceremony. Having your furry best friend running around makes it all so much more personal and special. Sophie

On the move.

If there’s a short distance between the ceremony and reception locations, book a roaming band to perform whilst walking your guests to the drinks reception. This will get the party started and create a feel-good atmosphere, not to mention some great photos.

Jessica

Timing is everything.

Have an evening wedding ceremony while the sun is setting and then finish it off with a fireworks display.

Sophie

The right words.

Rather than heading to the internet for recommended readings, choose a unique and heartfelt reading that means something to you both – perhaps a passage from your favourite book or poem.

Jessica
