This year marks 10 years since my wedding. After a ceremony at my family church, my husband and I threw a festival-style wedding overlooking the sea on the edge of Carbis Bay, filled with colour, music, food and individual touches that made it so personal to us. As well as a celebration of our love, it really was a celebration of our loves and all the things that make us who we are, from our favourite drinks, cakes, colours and music to foods inspired by our heritage. And, 10 years on, I’m so glad we did it that way.

We’ve always been about breaking the ‘rules’ here at Wed and, in a county filled with brilliantly creative suppliers, stunning venues and epic locations, there’s plenty of inspiration for couples seeking to put their stamp on their weddings in this issue.

Our bridal fashion story Unbridled Spirit sets the coolly individual mood with its showcase of fashion-forward gowns and separates, perfect for a relaxed and wildly romantic wedding in the Cornish landscape. The natural beauty and away-from-it-all vibe – not to mention the rather photogenic horses – of new wedding venue Lower Bussow Farm in St Ives provided a breathtaking backdrop.

For those dreaming of a so-you celebration within touching distance of the shore, To the Sea blends luxe,

boho touches and modern fashions at The Godolphin, complete with panoramas across Mount’s Bay. And Call of the Ocean offers inspiration for relaxed and romantic celebrations on Cornish sands with dried flowers, warm colours and sea glass jewels adding to the character-filled coastal vibe.

Your ceremony should be the standout moment of your day – we show you how to bring an individual and memorable twist to proceedings in Make Ceremony Magic, while Let’s Dance and It’s a Celebration! are full of ideas for a personality-packed party.

From the western edge of the county to the east, from north coast to south, our Got Wed section is brimming with beautiful weddings and couples, each of whom put their likes and loves front and centre of their celebrations. From Hannah and Tobias, whose wedding at Trevenna was filled with thoughtful touches and the dreamiest bespoke dress, to Phoebe and Ollie, who opted for a super-relaxed day painted with dazzling gold and pink, each wedding is filled with love – and oh-so unique.

LOVE IN PARADISE

Tucked away in a secluded corner of south-east Cornwall, Boconnoc is a wedding venue of dreamlike beauty, its grounds spanning picturesque parkland, ancient woodland and gardens where magnolias, hydrangeas and rhododendrons bloom alongside exotic plants. At its heart, Boconnoc House blends stately elegance with a homely ambience, while The Stable Yard offers rustic romance, perfect for relaxed welcome dinners and morning-after get-togethers. For incredibly romantic ceremonies, there’s the 800-year-old church, Georgian Bathhouse and Dorothy Garden. Complete with a choice of gorgeously styled bedrooms and cottages, this veritable wedding village now boasts a series of new additions to further enhance its wow factor.

Set in a woodland glade flanked by trees and rolling meadows, a new ceremony location offers an idyllic setting to take your vows immersed in nature. The team can decorate the space with hay bales and rugs and even organise the soundtrack of a choir for a soul-stirring ceremony in one of the venue’s most peaceful locations.

A bespoke design by Sarah Fortescue, there’s also a new copper-

topped bar in the Panelled Dining Room, which is stocked with local products such as Lantic Gin from the venue’s on-site distillery alongside crowd-pleasing drinks from Tarquin’s, Cornish Orchards, Skinners and Twin Fin Rum. The breakfasts, which are cooked to order for guests every morning of their stay, are also rich in produce from local suppliers – including a butcher, baker and dairy located close to the estate – and homegrown fruit and vegetables from the kitchen garden.

A serene space to savour some calm before the wedding day, the Stewardry is a recent addition to the choice of accommodation, which is available for seven-night stays. Nestled in a tranquil valley, the luxurious 18th century manor house sleeps 14 in exquisite interiors inspired by Boconnoc’s breathtaking gardens.

And for couples wishing to combine their wedding with a holiday at Boconnoc, the venue now offers a range of activities for guests of all ages to relish an action-packed and tailor-made stay. Get creative in the arts and crafts space or competitive with a choice of indoor and outdoor games. Explore the estate on a series of trails – ideal for walking, running or mountain biking – or head to the lake for swimming and paddle boarding. With a tennis court, foraging and a mobile spa treatment service also available, you’ll be tempted to book a week-long sojourn and make

cherished memories in this captivating corner of Cornwall. boconnoc.com bridalbuzz

WEDDING

A new wedding venue has opened its doors in St Ives – and it offers stunning scenery,

rustic interiors and wild romance in equal measure. Lower Bussow Farm also offers the warmest of welcomes from the Bradley family who have lovingly brought their vision of a characterful celebration space to life.

Located amidst acres of rolling fields and a terraced garden abloom with wildflowers, the resident alpacas grazing the surrounding meadows, the rural location is private and peaceful. Offering the best of coast and countryside, the venue lies within easy reach of the beaches of St Ives, while a walk along the footpath to Rosewall Hill affords the most spectacular views across St Ives Bay and the rugged surrounding coastline.

Framed by flowers, the cedar-roofed pagoda is a seriously scenic setting for a blessing, while the wedding barn is a dream canvas for a celebration to remember, complete with feast-style dining at long timber trestle tables for up to 180, a fully staffed kitchen and bar, a firepit and ample space for live music and dancing. The venue also offers accommodation in the form of cosy cottages, refurbished barns, a farmhouse and small campsite. Don’t miss our bridal fashion editorial, Unbridled Spirit, which was captured in this wow-worthy setting.

Steeped in history, the Victorian hotel blends traditional charm and modern touches. The dedicated wedding team crafts bespoke packages tailored to suit your vision, whether it’s a civil ceremony for up to 120 people in the Atlantic Suite, a gathering of your nearest and dearest in the Land’s End Restaurant or an elopement in the Admiral Boston Room. From the restaurant to the clifftop terrace, celebratory drinks will be served alongside mesmerising ocean views, while the ever-changing seas and skies provide the most romantic backdrop for photographs. Whether you opt for a sitdown dinner or relaxed buffet, you are assured a bespoke menu rich in the finest local ingredients in addition to a carefully selected wine list.

COAST AND COUNTRY

Can’t decide between coast and country? Fret not, for Tregedna Weddings offers both coastal beauty and countryside serenity in a secluded corner of Cornwall. Situated in a picture-perfect setting near Falmouth’s Maenporth beach, the venue offers two spaces for couples to celebrate in fun, relaxed and personality-packed style.

The Loft is a fully licensed venue for civil marriages and partnerships, presenting a light and airy space in a traditional barn setting. Couples can host an intimate wedding of 15 or a grand celebration for 90, while The Barn is a charming blank canvas with exposed beams for 90-100 seated guests, allowing up to 150 guests for the evening reception. For those dreaming of al fresco festivities, the grounds offer backdrops for ceremonies and marquee receptions.

Perfect for DIY weddings, the exclusive-use venue allows use of the kitchen and bar space for you to select your preferred suppliers and tailor every element of your day, from the catering to the décor. It also has on-site accommodation in the Lodge (included in the hire price) for 24 guests to stay for two nights, which can be hired for additional nights to suit your plans. Combining a beautiful backdrop with a brilliantly flexible ethos, Tregedna is a dream setting for a modern wedding replete with the personalisation factor.

A MODERN RURAL ROMANCE

Having opened its doors earlier in 2022, new wedding venue The Barn at Pengelly is proving a hit with couples seeking exclusivity, versatility and boundless rural romance.

Set amongst 500 acres of Cornish farmland in the heart of the Duchy, the venue boasts an away-from-it-all charm while being conveniently located just five miles from Truro. The purpose-built celebration space sits amongst a fifth generation working farm and looks out over rolling hills and serene lakes, offering a combination of multi-day exclusive hire, on-site accommodation (sleeping up to 21), a luxurious honeymoon cabin and wedding coordination.

Flooded with natural light, the sweeping bi-folding doors of the glass-fronted barn opens onto a terrace, seamlessly linking the indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing guests to roam between the blank canvas interiors and the glorious al fresco spaces with their sweeping views across the surrounding meadows.

Licensed for indoor and outdoor ceremonies, the flexible venue can be adapted for intimate celebrations through to large-scale events of up to 150 daytime guests and 250 evening guests.

There’s also a commercial kitchen and fully staffed rustic bar stocked with local favourites (as well as Pimm’s on tap!) and a choice of accommodation including camping, self-catering cottages and the honeymoon cabin – a starry-eyed setting to spend your wedding night with its wood burner, hammock and lakeside views.

HOUSE OF LOVE

Hidden in a secluded valley just three miles from the north Cornish coast lies Pengenna Manor. If you’re seeking a venue with a palpable sense of history and idyllic natural surrounds, then you’ll revel in the 800-year-old house and 300 acres of countryside.

Whether you host your nuptials in the rustic barn or stage a marquee celebration in the grounds, the venue provides a spectacular blank canvas to allow couples to make their vision manifest, boasting no less than nine (indoor and outdoor) licensed venues including the 200-year-old Cowyard Barn, rose arbour and even a beautiful island in the middle of the river under a canopy of trees.

Introducing a new mini wedding package for up to 40 guests, couples can enjoy a host of features and benefits including exclusive-use hire of the venue from 5pm the day before the wedding to 11am the day after; access to two acres of gardens, 20 acres of meadowland and 60 acres of woodland; a two-night selfcatering stay in the Manor; one night’s camping in the river meadows and use of either the Cowyard Barn or the Stables for the wedding breakfast – all for just £4,100.

And there’s more. If you book a weekend wedding under their large wedding package for 2023 at Pengenna before 31st October 2022, you’ll receive 24 hours extra free use of the venue either before or after your wedding, including an extra night of accommodation in both the Manor and the camping meadows. pengennamanor.co.uk

SECLUDED CHARM

Tucked away in Lanteglos-by-Fowey, Tredudwell Manor is a breathtakingly romantic wedding venue, offering couples a gorgeous choice of indoor and outdoor spaces to exchange vows and celebrate in one of Cornwall’s most secluded and irresistibly picturesque locales. At its heart, the 18th century Queen Anne manor house has been undergoing a series of renovations, which are now complete.

During the final phase of the restoration project, the drawing room and dining room were completely gutted and rebuilt with just the exterior stone walls remaining. In keeping with the manor’s rustic elegance, the result is an inviting set of spaces that can be used for weddings, be it an intimate gathering or grand-scale celebration as you and your guests make the most of the venue and its spectacular surrounds.

In addition, the team will be revamping the décor in the ceremony room over the winter with new lighting and creative murals framing the orchard outside, adding an elegant edge to this enchanting country venue.

OCEAN DREAMS

Built in 1887 for a local artist, Beacon Crag oozes romance. Presiding over the cliffs near Porthleven on Cornwall’s south coast, the house is set within five acres of private grounds, boasting staggering views across the sea and rugged cliffscape with its own access to the rocky coves below.

Specialising in elopements and intimate weddings alongside marquee weddings, it’s a wildly romantic place to wed, whether the stormy seas are crashing below or the sun is glinting on the calm waters. Accommodation comes in the form of a self-contained apartment with a private decking area and use of the hot tub (not to mention swoon-worthy sea views), along with a series of en suite rooms with king-sized beds, sea views, large baths and double showers.

Newly available to hire, the venue now offers a stunning handmade arch and a pair of flower towers. Both provide a fabulous focal point for ceremonies and photographs, perfect for couples dreaming of a water’s edge wedding with extra wow factor.

STYLED WITH A KISS

Planning a wedding can be exciting and wonderful to time-consuming and stressful – and everything in-between – and one of the most discussed areas of planning is the styling. Choosing a wedding stylist means you can work with an expert to help create your dream vision, ensuring it looks every bit as magical as (or even better than) you imagined.

Nikki Sherriff of Knots & Kisses knows that fresh eyes and ideas can really help take your wedding to a new level, and that venue styling isn’t simply about making things look beautiful. Every visual element shapes your guests’ experience, so purpose and function are important too, and she’s offering three styling services to help you finesse the look for your wedding.

‘The Style Experience’ will see Nikki working with you from concept through to completion, offering a comprehensive, bespoke styling experience designed to shape the overall look and feel of your wedding. Meanwhile, ‘The On-The-Day Edit’ takes the stress out of the big day itself, removing any décor set-up and styling tasks from your to-do list – perfect if you already have a design in mind and most of the styling supplies you need.

And as well as styling and design, there’s also ‘The Inspiration Session’, a consultation-only service for couples who need a little guidance or a big dose of inspiration – ideal if you want to do everything yourselves but don’t know where to start when it comes to creating a cohesive, trend-led look for your wedding. Knots & Kisses also offers a range of backdrops and ceremony frames, which can be either included with a styling service, or used on a hireonly basis. knotsandkisses.co.uk

THE FASH PACK

A go-to for modern brides, St Ives Bridal Boutique offers an insanely stylish lineup of bridal designers – and the latest arrival, Charlie Brear, is making waves with brides seeking cool girl separates and silhouettes. Designed and made in London, Charlie Brear’s contemporary dresses are accompanied by a range of styling pieces such as overskirts, capes, lace sleeves, reversible tops and silk sashes, allowing brides to create a bespoke look which can be transformed throughout the day and night.

Also new to the boutique, Kate Fearnley is another British designer proving a hit amongst stylesavvy brides. Relaxed and luxurious with playful design elements, the romantic gowns feature handfinished embroidery, 3D embellishment and soft laces.

The love for Aussie label Made With Love shows no sign of abating with the arrival of their latest dresses at the boutique. Cameron marries the designer’s signature figure-hugging skirt and plunging neckline with hand-beaded, 3D lace and detachable tulle bows. Hollywood glamour meets modern elegance in Gia, a strapless stunner with sequined lace and detachable tulle cuffs for an extra touch of drama. And the bold square neckline, structured bodice and hand-beaded lace of Beau is sure to captivate brides seeking showstopping aisle style.

Brand new designer Love Story Bride completes the contemporary collection. MODERN GLAMOUR

A new designer has arrived at Bliss Bridal Gowns in Newquay – and the gowns are seriously headturning. Grounded in European design, Abella from Allure Bridals crafts ethereal silhouettes awash with showstopping features, from dimensional blooms to intricate beadwork and luxe, glimmering fabrics.

Idina is a romantic vision of sequined tulle, its plunging bodice and soft skirts adorned with leafy appliqués, while Marina is a sparkly delight, its A-line skirt and modern bodice shimmering with every step. We’re also a little in love with Helga, with its twinkling overskirt cloaked with lace blossoms and tulle bows at the shoulders.

Another new arrival, the latest collection from Rebecca Ingram brings effortless beauty and whimsical silhouettes to the rails. Brides with a weakness for sparkle will love the gold shimmer of Florie, while those seeking minimalist style will fall for the timeless sophistication of Jakayla; then there’s the sparkle tulle skirt and stretch satin bodice of Vivien, complete with a trending square neckline.

For equally fashion-forward bridesmaids, the boutique stocks a hand-picked selection of dresses from Sorella Vita. Ranging from sumptuous velvet to soft charmeuse, the dresses come in a range of styles and colours, allowing you to coordinate or mix and match for the chicest of bride squads. Complete with the warmest of welcomes from owner Tracy Ashton, who plants a tree with each bridal gown sale as part of her sustainability initiative, a visit to Bliss Bridal Gowns has all the makings of a magical browsing experience.

Home to Romantica, alongside Pure, Jennifer Wren, Silhouette and Sonsie (and with new veil and accessories from Twilight Designs), brides can look forward to a fabulous choice. From Romantica’s award-winning opulent gowns to Sonsie’s shapely dresses designed especially for the fuller figure, brides are bound to fall for (at least!) one of the many frocks adorning the rails. What’s more, the top floor will be dedicated to a selection of off-the-peg dresses for both brides and bridesmaids, alongside an extensive selection of accessories such as veils, boleros and tiaras. So whether you wish to peruse the latest collections, find your finishing touches or bag a beautiful bargain, Frocks and Frills’ will ensure a successful and spoilsome shopping trip. And if that isn’t enough, the boutique is hosting a special relocation sale during October to make room for the incoming collections, offering a plethora of gowns (bridal, bridesmaid and evening), veils, shoes and tiaras at discounted prices. frocksfrills.co.uk

wed’s STYLE GUIDE

From the hemline to the headwear, get clued up on the bridal basics and go find your dress of dreams!

words Hannah May

Buying your wedding dress can sometimes feel as though you’re learning a new language. And if the process leaves you confused between your moiré and your guipure, not to mention overwhelmed by an endless array of choice, then allow us to introduce you to the bridal basics.

By breaking it down into the ten core components, you can virtually design your own blueprint of a gown, arming yourself with a vision that fits your individual sense of style and body type while also keeping a keen eye on the latest trends that might take your fancy.

From the skirt to the sleeves, here’s our mini guide to help you get started...

Silhouette

The shape of your dress is one of the most important factors, ensuring the most comfortable and flattering fit to help you look and feel your best. A-lines flow softly out from the waist and complement all frames, while structured ballgowns create a waistline and lend support to curvier physiques. Empire lines (the runways’ Regency obsession where the skirt starts just under the bust) and body-con styles are perfect for petite or boyish figures, including columns/ sheaths and one of wedding world’s most lustworthy silhouettes: the Little White Dress. Then there’s the fit-and-flare, which hugs the body until it kicks out at the thigh, and the classic mermaid that flares slightly lower at the knee – both of which hark of old school glamour by accentuating the natural hourglass. Or you could ditch the dress altogether and opt for a bridal suit, which remains an haute couture

Skirt

Straight with a front or side split, bud-shaped or statement ballgown? Whether as separates or built into the gown, the skirt can be chosen or even customised to suit your personal look. Voluminous yet light-as-air styles are all the rage and include frothy tulle overskirts, ruffles and tutus, while more floaty lines add an ethereal edge and come in the form of bias-cut silk skirts, sway-worthy crepe frocks and reams of billowing chiffon with fluttering trains.

Hemline

From the latest resurgence of micro minis to dramatic floor-sweeping lengths and everything in-between, pick a hem to flatter and/or flaunt accordingly. Shorter hems can be clean and minimalist or daringly high fashion (such as feather skirts), while knee or ankle skimmers and maxi styles are more reminiscent of vintage fashions from the ‘50s and ‘60s. High-low hemlines bare the legs while remaining longer in the back (the perfect heel flashing, dance-ready option), with floor-length epitomising timeless elegance, though receiving a modern makeover via floral accents, elaborate embroidery and eye-catching prints.

Back

With as much attention afforded to the back as the front of the

the impact of the aisle walk and beyond, select from open and backless to

backs, cut-outs, sheer and draping backs to add another dimension to your dress. Cross straps, scoop, V and caged backs are all de rigueur on the runways.

Bodice

The bodice is key in defining the overall silhouette and look. Firstly, think about your strap type (such as spaghetti, halterneck, strapless), then the bodice shape, such as scooped, sweetheart, jewel, off-the-shoulder, bateau/boat, deep plunging V-neck, high and square necklines. Sample them all to see what best suits your frame while experimenting with the latest trends, which currently include corsets, asymmetrical and mock necks.

Fabric

As far as your fabric is concerned, ask yourself: is it fit for purpose? If you’re hosting a winter wedding, then a barely-there chiffon gown might not be in keeping with the season or aesthetic. Similarly, a heavy satin or multi-layered frock might swamp your frame and style if it’s a breezy beach wedding you favour. From the fit to the feel, check that you’re well supported, comfortable and able to move while deliberating between tulle, silk, lace, satin, taffeta, chiffon, crepe, organza, velvet and charmeuse. As part of the cottagecore movement, cotton and crocheted styles are on the rise, while sheer (and nude) fabrics are also en vogue.

Sleeve

Depending on the dress and time of year in which you’re tying the knot, you may opt out of sleeves entirely. Strapless ballgowns tend to leave the arms and décolletage bare, but a bolero, long-sleeved top, detachable sleeves or cape can be added for a more transformational, layered look. However, sleeves are still reigning supreme on the runway, particularly anything with volume such as the bell, balloon and puff varieties. Cap, flutter and long, sheer sleeves present a subtler alternative, while trumpet, lace and off-the-shoulder versions give an instant injection of ethereal romance. Add floral embroidery, beadwork, sequins, pearls or appliqués for extra style points.

Waist

corsetry – the waist continues to be reimagined with every bridal collection. Embellish with a belt, flossing, ribbon or cut-outs, and expose with bridal separates like a waist-skimming skirt and crop top. Certain styles and silhouettes

accentuate your waist while others will draw the eye elsewhere; the trick is to try them all and see what works best with

Colour

Blue is one of the biggest shades du jour, with blush, peach, lemon and nude tones still gracing collections the world over. Try to match your skin shade (e.g. dark, olive, fair) and undertone (warm, cool or neutral) with the dress’ colour – and note the subtleties between champagne, oyster, pale gold and silver tinted gowns. For example, yellowtoned ivory gowns tend to suit fair skin well, while creamier coloured frocks work better with medium shades of skin. Brides with olive skin pair perfectly with traditional white gowns, while darker complexions are complemented by most dress colours, including brights. And don’t forget to think about the venue, season, décor and the shades of the groom’s and bridesmaids’ ensembles to ensure a harmonious look for the entire wedding party and scene.

Accessories

When it comes to accessories, brides are spoiled for choice. The main risk is overkill through donning one of everything, which can overload your outfit and make everything appear too fussy. So start with the dress and add features from there. For example, if you’ve selected a minimal shift, then an elaborate headdress or killer heels would elevate and lend extra interest – or you could opt out entirely of accessories for a pared-back look. Unembellished gowns could be complemented by ornate addons such as a bejewelled belt, oversized corsage or maxi ribbon, while statement frocks with all the frills might be paired with a clean cape, tulle overskirt or mini train. Otherwise, accessories and embellishments are one of the easiest ways to make your bridal ensemble more bespoke, with today’s must-haves including vintage or individually designed jewellery to detachable sleeves, fringing, feathers, appliqués, embroidery, handstitched blooms, sequins, crystals and oversized florals.

ENDURING LOVE

1. 1. 1. 1. 1. 1. 2. 2. 2.

From ornate Victorian style to bold art deco design, our love affair with timeless and romantic style is an enduring one – and jewellers are experiencing a surge in demand for pieces with a nostalgic twist.

You might be lucky enough to find a one-of-a-kind vintage or antique ring – or even an heirloom piece charged with sentimentality, which can be reworked to create a ring tailored to you. “Some customers choose to wear a treasured family ring passed down from loved ones,” explains Nicola Luscombe at Drakes. “You can choose whether to have the ring resized, serviced and cleaned or work with our team to remodel it using the existing metal and stones, creating a ring you will treasure for years to come.”

You may choose to combine something old with something new by having a modern ring made with a vintage diamond. Justin Duances houses a stunning collection of these age-old stones. “Each vintage diamond is completely individual,” explains Jamila Hirtenstein at Justin Duance. “Customers can choose one of these unique stones and have it crafted into a design of their choice.” You may also have your ring cast in sand from your favourite beach, creating a

texture which pairs perfectly with the organic nature of the vintage diamonds.

And then, of course, there’s a dazzling choice of vintage-inspired designs. “We’d recommend looking for something unusual such as a cluster set, stones set into the band or even a piece with coloured gemstones rather than diamonds,” advises Nicola at Drakes. “As well as engraving which can be added to your chosen design, yellow and rose gold brings a vintage feel to a ring, even those with a modern setting.”

Alongside a renewed interest in yellow and rose gold, the team at Drakes has noticed an increasing number of couples opting for two-stone rings. “These are unusual but growing in popularity,” says Nicola. “We have a small collection of two-stone diamond and gemstone rings.” Also look out for halo designs, pavé set diamonds and millgrain detailing for a ring which honours the romantic designs of the past.

2. Justin Duance justind.co.uk

Pairing a brilliant cut diamond and diamond halo, this romantic design from Drakes is rich in vintage appeal.

Combining something old with something new, we love the idea of creating a modern design with a vintage diamond from Justin Duance.

Dating back to the reign of King Louis XV of France in the 18th century, the marquise cut is back in the spotlight. This striking style is from Drakes.

Symbolising loyalty and new beginnings, this dazzling emerald ring by Erin Cox is rich in vintageinspired romance.

So-Cool Jewels

Seeking a dazzlingly distinctive piece to complete your bridal ensemble? Janie Wolverson of The Lucky Sixpence specialises in standout accessories for brides who are keen to break away from the traditional bridal mould and – thanks to the launch of some new pieces on her website – brides-to-be have a captivating choice of seriously special creations.

Statement-making crowns are amongst the highlights of the new collection, from a showstopping mother of pearl spike crown to a floral twig crown in a glorious range of gold tones, glass diamantes and Swarovski crystals. There are also pearl and diamanté halos, headbands, head chains and scatter pins designed to layer and mix and match with each other or with Janie’s one-off pieces crafted from vintage finds. The capsule collection means you can pick and choose elements to build your own look. For The Love Of Rubies

We’re a little in love with this eternity ring by west Cornwall based jeweller, Justin Duance. The symbol of love and romance, rubies have long been coveted for their rich red lustre and these delicate rubies, which have been fully traced and sourced from Greenland, pop with captivating colour against this textured sandcast setting.

As well as sandcast creations, textured rock and wood inlay rings, and individually handcrafted pieces made from heirloom or recycled metals, Justin’s unique and eye-catching jewellery will ensure timelessly ‘you’ style.

Ring Tones

If you’re looking for something altogether more eye-catching than a plain wedding band, then prepare to be dazzled by these colourful creations by Emily Nixon. With her studio located within touching distance of the water, the west Cornwall based jeweller draws endless inspiration from the ocean, her signature sculptural style echoing the textures found along the tideline: think seaweed-inspired rings sprinkled with exquisite diamonds and natural gemstones, and earrings and necklaces shining in a myriad of coastal hues.

Continually adding to her exquisite collection and experimenting with new forms, these latest creations make for dazzling wedding bands. The distinctive textures of sea urchins and weathered rock meet a glorious carnival of sapphires in shades of blue, teal and green through to bold pink and purple, making for a standout symbol of your love of each other – and the sea. emilynixon.com

Ocean Treasures

Seeking a distinct piece of jewellery infused with a love of the ocean? Daisy Munn of Tide and Trove has always been drawn to the coast and her love of its texture, colours and light inspires her exquisite jewellery. A blend of 100% recycled precious metals, sea glass and recycled diamonds make each of her lovingly handcrafted pieces unique and effortlessly beautiful.

“My pieces are dainty, with soft feminine curves and delicate detailing,” explains Daisy. “My sea glass is lovingly hand collected from the Devon and Cornwall coast. With some pieces more rare than diamonds, some glass is so beautiful and precious that I was inspired to create Tide and Betrothed engagement rings – for those who love the sea, for those who connect with the coast and for those who just appreciate the beauty in the sea tumbled treasure.”

YOUR PATH TO WEDDING WELLNESS

From life-coaching and nutrition to rejuvenating spa experiences, wed looks at feeding mind, body and soul on the run-up to W-day

words Hannah May

Self-care is vital, and even more so while in the throes of planning one of the most important days of your lives. Not only will forging healthier habits and a stronger mindset help mitigate stress or anxiety during the run-up to your big day, but it will also stand you in better stead as you begin married life. We’ve sampled a selection of wellness rituals and embarked upon our own mini journey to help inspire you with yours...

Feed the soul...

Whether it’s a daily hike on the moors, therapeutic sea swim or al fresco yoga session, nothing beats the endorphin rush of being outdoors. Exercising mind, body and soul, the myriad benefits are instant as you inhale fresh air, feel the elements on your skin and lose yourself in the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape.

Water & Stone Wild Spa

Water & Stone taps into the wild outdoors with its Nordic spa experience at CSpace: a secret sanctuary in the centre of Newquay guaranteed to relax and rejuvenate every part of your being. Flit at your leisure between a woodfired sauna, hot tubs and ice baths as you embrace everything from the ritual of löyly (steam heat) to the art of cold water immersion (at a brain-freezing temperature of 5°C) in one invigorating hit.

You might wish to escape here with your loved one for some together-time away from the wedmin or make it a regular part of your routine as you build resilience, bolster your health and find peace in the private space that has been designed to cultivate a deep and lasting sense of wellness. The tension eases as soon as you enter the open-air spa and derobe in the Mongolian yurt changing room before roaming barefoot amongst ice tank, plunge pool, drench bucket, sauna and hot tubs. I slept like a baby after my visit here, feeling suitably restored and ready for whatever lay ahead.

St Michaels Resort Hydrothermal Experience

The spa at St Michaels Resort is a wellness hub that has it all. Situated a stone’s throw from Gyllyngvase Beach in Falmouth, its waterfront position combines panoramic bay views with a privately out-of-sight position. Inside, you’re greeted by coastal-inspired interiors as you escape into a world of unadulterated serenity.

The Hydrothermal Experience is St Michaels’ ode to escapism, featuring an extensive selection of spaces and facilities including the world’s only Cornish sea salt steam room, rainforest steam room, Finnish herbal sauna, experience showers, day beds and heated loungers alongside the southwest’s largest hydrothermal pool: an assortment of 21 massage stations in the form of jets, Jacuzzis and high-pressure showers. Outside, you’ll find a barrel sauna and hot tub framed by the ocean and lush greenery of the garden, inviting you to imbibe the elements of the season.

There’s a tantalising treatment menu should you wish to prolong your stay. As well as various Detox Retox and Afternoon Teatox packages to pick from, there’s also a host of signature treatments such as a marine detox massage and wellness treatments including Reiki, reflexology and nurturing massages. I opted for the heavenly Indian head massage, which sent me to another plane of relaxation as a heady blend of Eastern aromatic oils were applied to my arms, back, shoulders, neck, head and hair. Stumbling out of the spa and into the sea breeze, any notion of stress seemed as distant as the horizon beyond.

stmichaelsresort.com

Feed the body...

Neglecting the vital role nutrition plays on our health and well-being can have dire consequences. A lack of energy and low concentration levels, disrupted sleep patterns, mood swings and disorders, a barrage of illnesses – these are all afflictions to avoid at any time, but especially during the wedding planning period when stress levels can be heightened and the to-do list seemingly endless.

As well as eating a balanced diet to maintain normal bodily functions, there are additional steps that you can take to enhance your nutrition. Mindful, plant-based eating is en vogue for a reason. Not only is it kinder to the planet, but it has also been proven to garner a wealth of personal health benefits. Consider switching to a few meat or dairy-free days a week, or permanently replacing a few everyday staples such as cow’s milk for dairy-free alternatives.

You could also increase your use of functional spices such as turmeric, ginger, cayenne and cumin, and look into incorporating nervine herbs as part of your daily ritual. Working as relaxants to calm and support the nervous system and abet conditions such as anxiety, stress and insomnia, examples of nervine herbs include lemon balm, chamomile, lavender, milky oat, St John’s wort, passionflower, valerian, skullcap, catnip, California poppy, borage and kava, which can be used in teas, tinctures, capsules or aromatherapy.

Alice Matthews Coaching

Cornwall-based Alice Matthews Coaching uses a range of techniques to enhance wellbeing and personal growth, focusing on individual mindsets to confront issues including overwhelm, pre-wedding anxiety, stress and post-wedding blues.

Offering one-to-one coaching sessions alongside workshops, together you’ll explore the likes of meditation (with basic breathwork), NLP and tapping as well as manifestation or, as she explains: “taking a thought and turning it into a reality through feelings and actions”. The idea with manifestation is to align your focus, heart (passions) and energy by establishing a clear intention that can be achieved through a combination of visualisation, meditation, gratitude and ‘high vibration’ stimuli.

Alice will expertly peel back the layers of your psyche and behaviours to guide and strategise, helping you to build an action plan to effect positive change and forward momentum. In turn, you’ll discover how to maintain your energy, read and interpret intuitive nudges, refocus the mind through affirmations, fend off negative chatter and foster self-love. This will invite your desires into becoming manifest while establishing a more constructive mindset and daily routine. Even after a brief introduction, I felt positively charged to ask the world for my wants, and open-hearted enough to gratefully accept them.

Simone Thomas Wellness

It’s also worth considering your bioenergetics, which involves the biochemical study of energetic processes. Simone Thomas Wellness offers advanced health screening using bioenergetics to monitor and optimise the energetic state of internal organs. This can identify specific nutritional needs, hormonal imbalances, toxins in the body and food and environmental sensitivities that can all hamper your health and well-being.

The non-invasive process can be done at her Dorset clinic or by sending samples to provide her with information from your body. This can be used to create a bespoke, targeted plan to tackle any concerns, remove metals or toxins in the body, improve gut health or a lack of minerals and vitamins, eliminate certain foods or food groups, or treat hair loss conditions. “B vitamins are essential for strong, thick hair, particularly biotin (vitamin B7), which helps to increase the thickness of your hair follicles and boost growth,” she explains. “Biotin also helps to break down the fatty oil in sebum (which causes dandruff) and targets conditions that can damage the scalp, like dermatitis or eczema.”

Simone also offers a range of vitamin supplements to help you look and feel your best for your wedding and beyond. Biotin Brilliance has been expertly formulated to help strengthen hair, protect the scalp and promote healthy hair growth, combining with Super Greens and Everyday Wellness to help balance the gut and support cardiovascular health: a great way to foster your health and beauty, both inside and out.

When it comes to wedding planning, there’s a lot that can get in the way of what you really, really want (to paraphrase the Spice Girls!). So postengagement, before the scrapbook is dusted off and the planning becomes reality, it might be time to pause, reflect and think, as a couple, what do we really want on our wedding day?

Financing the fun Budget is obviously a huge contender when it comes to planning a wedding. Although homespun ideas and the family seamstress may be able to work wonders

and shave pounds off spiralling wedding costs, you still need some idea of overall spend before you commit to big day ideas you’ve been planning since primary school. Your budget will help anchor your plans so you have some idea of what is and isn’t possible, regardless of how many metres of spotty oilcloth and mix-andmatch jam jars you may own. Parents may well offer financial gifts to help with the cost of the wedding day, but this shouldn’t be a green light for them to completely take over organising the day they want. If you don’t need any help financially, it might be wise to sit them down before plans escalate and explain that

the wedding day you want isn’t in need of financial input – but explain what the day means to you and how you see your plans evolving.

Where

on earth…

Location is also a biggie. Perhaps the glade you played in as a child is now a thriving community or on the side of an A road? You will, no doubt, have discovered new pastures as your life has moved on, so the I’m-HavingMy-Wedding-Here promises you made to your besties in Year 6 may since have dissipated and new horizons emerged. It’s also imperative to remember that

Enchanted

there are two of you in the relationship and wedding planning, as much as your partner may be keen to ensure all your dreams come true, is a joint business. If family properties or land have always been in the spotlight at family weddings and are offered up for your day, make it clear if the tithe barn at Grandma’s (as lovely as it is!) isn’t going to fit with your city-chic plans. However, it could be the perfect base for a hen do or even as a craft base if you’re DIY-ing your day.

Guest edit

The people you promised way back when that they’d be by your side as you said your vows; the friends you may have lost touch with over the years; the new family you are merging with. How do they all fit into your dream bijou bash in your local Michelin-starred restaurant? We all make promises – to ourselves and our loved ones, both vocally and unspoken – regarding life occasions. Family and friendship bonds can come with quiet expectation of all-inclusivity, but what if those nearest and dearest don’t fit into your newly acquired plans? What if you’re desperate for a celebration abroad but the costs associated with transporting both sides of the family to a ceremony overlooking the Balinese rice fields just aren’t feasible, or an elopement is the order of the day for you both? “Don’t be afraid to settle on a plan and merge your family and friends into it, rather than to try and shape your day into the day that suits other people,” advises Kate, a recently hitched bride.

If party size is an issue, why not consider a post-ceremony party at a different time and location. While traditionally wedding receptions follow the ceremony, you can separate the two and get the legalities done before the party if you have your heart set on a wedding abroad or a location that simply doesn’t suit your guest numbers. This allows you to enjoy the intimacy of the ceremony, while also giving the time and space for a good old celebration with family and friends.

Style it out

Weddings can often elicit serious feelings of nostalgia in our nearest and dearest, and heartfelt gifts and tributes can be a wonderful and generous gesture. But what if the hand-stitched veil that’s been passed down through generations of your family just doesn’t suit the above-the-knee shift you have fallen in love with and would look dazzling topped off with a birdcage fascinator? Think of ways to utilise any

gestures that you would love to incorporate into your day but aren’t on your really-really-want list. How about displaying any treasured pieces that are gifted to you? Smaller items like jewellery can easily and discreetly be incorporated into your outfit, perhaps sewn inside, or even framed and placed on tables. For larger items like dresses and veils, we love the idea of a mannequin’s dummy as décor somewhere within your venue space, so those meaningful pieces are still a special part of your day.

Personal taste

When it comes to the menu, wedding sustenance ranges from the minuscule (canapé spoons) to the gigantic (hog roast), so choosing your flavour, without compromise, should be fairly easy. You may need to compromise for young children and elderly guests – particularly if mobility is an issue – as queuing at festival-style vans may not be conducive to a recent hip replacement. But don’t forgo flavour when you can incorporate your wants with your guests’ needs. Why can’t festival-style food be served at tables, for

example, or if champagne and oysters sets your hearts aflutter, include a child-friendly alternative in the same seafood theme, like mini fish finger sandwiches or fish and chips in cones.

Most importantly, don’t be afraid to have the wedding day you want and try to discuss alternatives where you can. At the heart of any marriage is the couple and, if you can begin married life the way you really want, your guests won’t be able to help falling in love with your day, your way!

Perfect for a country wedding, look to the landscape for inspiration: think sage and forest greens, stone, sand, ochre and brown for a coolly close-to-nature vibe. Don’t be afraid to mix up your fabrics, patterns and colours. We love the simplicity of a threepiece suit in rich brown, a stone suit teamed with textured tonal accessories or sage green paired with warm touches of terracotta. Complete the look with an individual touch – perhaps a bracelet or buttonhole of feathers or dried flowers – and shoes in shades of brown, tan or caramel. 1. ASOS asos.com 2. SMOOTH

Pack a debonair punch by donning something velvet for your big day. A particular lust-have for a winter wedding, the feel-me fabric can be coolly incorporated via a dinner jacket or worn head-to-toe for a lavish look. From classic black and slate grey to midnight blue, pick a palette to suit the venue or bridal party, or you can really elevate the look and stand out from your wedding party with a rich jewel tone – think emerald green, luscious burgundy or golden amber.

Perched on the edge of Marazion, where the land gives way to the sands of the sweeping beach and ancient causeway to St Michael’s Mount, The Godolphin boasts a truly breathtaking vantage point across one of the UK’s most awe-inspiring locations.

Light and airy, a palette of coastal colours and snug touches lend a laidback, easy ambience to the contemporary interiors, offering gorgeous spots to relax and gaze at the sweep of blue, the historic castle and the comings and goings of boats across the water and people across the cobbled causeway.

A sublime setting for a stylish seaside soirée, this styled shoot offers inspiration for a relaxed coastal celebration, reflective of the luxe, modern feel of The Godolphin. Drawing on nature’s hues, a palette of soft whites, earthy browns and greys blends with the blues of the sea and skyline, with warm candlelight and amber tones adding depth.

“We used a wealth of natural materials and height to create a sophisticated boho feel on the tablescapes,” explains Hazel Parsons of Out of the Ordinary Weddings (outoftheordinaryweddings.com) and Keeping It Vintage (keepingitvintage.co.uk) who coordinated and styled the shoot. “We draped soft grey cheesecloth table runners across the tables to add depth and texture to the look. Layering played a big part in creating the finished style.”

The scene is scattered with the textures and shapes of the sea, such as the coral-like tea light holders and detailing on the buttercream cake, while washes of soft white and blue carry from the wildly beautiful flowers to the stationery. Marrying before a macramé ceremony arch draped with sea holly and foliage, the bride and groom blend modern sophistication with a relaxed boho vibe. With St Michael’s Mount beyond, the murmur of the tide and the call of the seabirds, it is difficult to imagine a more enchanting scene.

It’s difficult to imagine anything more romantic than a wedding celebration for two within touching distance of the Atlantic breakers. In this styled shoot, a team of talented wedding creatives set the scene for a relaxed and beautifully styled wedding picnic on Cornwall’s rugged north coast.

A palette of warm neutrals with whispers of soft pink and gold blends dreamily into the surrounding grass-tufted sand dunes, as do the array of natural textures at the picnic table, from the raffia place mats, cushions and vases filled with pampas grass to the macramé and palm leaf details. Touches of pink and gold carry from the cake to the stationery, while grazing platters

filled with cheeses, meats and fruit bring vibrant colour and flavour.

Slotting seamlessly into the scene, the bride wears a billowing handcrafted dress, her long hair woven with boho braids and dried flowers, and her delicate handmade jewellery dotted with sea glass and ethically sourced diamonds. The groom is dressed simply in pared-back white and sandy shades, his buttonhole echoing the neutral hues of the bouquet flecked with burnt orange. Strolling across the sands, dancing at the water’s edge and curling up for a picnic to the murmur of the tide – this relaxed celebration by the sea is the stuff of dreams.

“Nearly one month on from the wedding, and all the guests are still talking about the cake” Happy Groom

make ceremony magic

Your wedding ceremony should be the standout moment of your day. From the rituals to the readings, make yours unforgettable with this expert advice

It’s all too easy to get caught up in planning the wedding reception, whether it’s choosing the cocktails, designing the cake or picking the playlist – but don’t overlook what should be the main event of the day: the ceremony.

While many guests traditionally used to look forward to the formalities being over so ties could be loosened and champagne swilled, the ceremony is increasingly emerging as the standout moment of the day, for guests as much as the newlywedded couple. This is thanks to a greater focus on celebrating the personalities and loves of the couple: rich in meaning and wrapped in the words, sounds and people that are dear to them, a modern wedding ceremony can be as

engaging, inventive and unique to you as you wish it to be.

We’ve enlisted independent celebrant Sabine Smith of Perfect Day Ceremonies (perfectdayceremonies. co.uk) to offer some inspiration for planning a wowworthy ceremony.

The venue

It’s easy to see why ceremonies officiated by independent celebrants are becoming so popular.

“Your ceremony can take place anywhere you like if you work with an independent celebrant. We love to officiate ceremonies in unusual places as well as more traditional settings,” explains Sabine. From woodland

glade or craggy clifftop to stately home, rustic barn or even your parents’ back garden, you can choose the location that stirs your heartstrings, but do bear in mind that the ceremony won’t be legally binding, so you will have to also arrange a civil ceremony at a licensed venue.

“As celebrants, we are happy to work with your choice of venue, wherever it may be and at what time of the day or day of the week you want to celebrate. The choice is yours and we love to go the extra mile for our couples,” continues Sabine.

Once you’ve decided on your dream ceremony setting, think about the mood you’d like to create and

the experience from your guests’ perspective, whether it’s framing the view with a stunning floral display, positioning the seating to overlook the best vantage point or choosing the right tent to bring the outdoors in. Consider the mood you’d like to create and how you can bring a sense of ‘you’ to the setting.

The music

The soundtrack to your ceremony offers a key opportunity to bring a bespoke and brilliantly ambient dimension to proceedings. From acoustic guitar, a string quartet or a harpist to a gospel choir, male voice choir, performances from family and friends and even surprise musicians hidden in the congregation, there’s a plethora of options – just ensure they strike a personal chord.

“Walking into the ceremony to a piece of music that means a lot to you as a couple can be very powerful and can set the mood for what is to come,” says Sabine. “The lyrics of a song might resonate with you in a special way and can also be used in the ceremony script to reflect your feelings about the music you have chosen.”

Think about your favourite songs and arrange the performance to suit the atmosphere or venue; for example, you might ask a harpist to perform your favourite rock song or a guitarist to strum your favourite film soundtrack.

“Music can also be used to bring everyone in the congregation together at the beginning of the ceremony by performing a group song,” suggests Sabine. “This works really well after the declaration of commitment from the family and friends to support you during the years of marriage to come.” A collective performance is a fun and memorable way to celebrate your union – but don’t forget to provide lyrics.

Also remember to consider your exit music. “The music to walk out of the ceremony is equally important,” she says. “You walked in as

individuals and you are walking out as a couple. The exit song can reflect your dreams and your expectations for your future as a couple.”

The love story

Relating the story of your love should be amongst the most heartfelt moments of the day. “This is the favourite part of the ceremony for every celebrant. This is the bit where we find out how you found each other and your journey so far,” says Sabine. “Everyone’s story of how they came to find love is unique and special and the celebrant will take great care to tell your story.” From the moment you met and that hilarious first date story to the challenges you’ve faced and adventures you’ve been on together, this is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to share in the joy of your togetherness and the lifelong promises you’re about to make.

“Your celebrant will make sure that you have full editorial control over the story,” says Sabine. “The story might reveal things the congregation did not know before and I hope it will make you smile and feel all warm inside to hear again how it all began.”

The readings

The readings offer another opportunity to sprinkle personality unto your ceremony and communicate something significant about your relationship. “Using readings which are personal to you can help to create a ceremony that reflects you as a couple and your journey,” says Sabine.

The most important thing is to select a reading you both love. “You do not have to be good at poetry or write your own to make this part personal. Your celebrant can help you to find poems or readings that reflect you as a couple and which will feel right for you,” she advises.

You might choose an excerpt from a poem or book, song lyrics or movie quotes; it might even be love letters or emails you’ve exchanged over the years. Whether you opt for something sweet, funny, profound or deeply romantic, just ensure it feels true to your relationship and your style of ceremony – and choose someone who is confident to read it.

The traditions

While the wedding industry has seen huge change over recent years, many couples still like to weave some tradition into proceedings – and a ceremony conducted by an independent celebrant allows you to include the religious, spiritual or cultural elements you wish. “Using cultural or religious traditions is the part of the ceremony where you can be most creative. It is a lovely tradition for the father of the bride or a family member to walk the bride down the aisle and this is something a lot of couples like to use to start the ceremony,” explains Sabine. “Why not ask your celebrant to create family commitment statements that can be read out at the end or the beginning and the congregation can answer in unison to show their love and support for the couple? You do not have to be religious to add religious readings to make the ceremony extra special.”

The vows

From selecting your vows to choosing something modern to writing your own, there’s a series of options to ensure this hugely important moment is full of meaning, personality and emotion.

“Promises and vows have been part of traditional wedding ceremonies for hundreds of years, and you have to repeat the traditional vows during your registry office ceremony to make it a legal ceremony. However, during a celebrant-led ceremony you are encouraged to create your own personal vows to reflect your relationship and your journey so far,” says Sabine. “Your celebrant will be happy to assist you in the process of creating your own vows.”

Once you’ve decided on or penned the perfect vows for you, practise saying them aloud. And, on the day, try and look at each other as you make your lifelong promises.

The symbolic rituals

There are other elements you can add to your ceremony to make it your own, while enriching the experience with an extra layer of meaning and unity.

“I love nothing more than creating special memories for the couples and their families and friends, and this includes designing and using symbolic rituals which reflect them as a couple or a family,” says Sabine. “A symbolic ritual has a very personal meaning and can take centre stage. Couples can discuss how it could work for them with their celebrant.”

Popular rituals include a sand ceremony (the couple pours sand from separate vessels into a single one to symbolise the two people joining together in marriage), handfasting (the hands are tied together

to symbolise the binding of two lives), ring warming (the rings are warmed with a wish, prayer or good thoughts for the couple by each guest) and the lighting of a unity candle (the lighting of one large candle from two smaller candles to represent the merging of two families).

The family and friends

Weddings are a celebration of togetherness – both as a couple and as a community of the dearest people in your lives. “Including your friends and family members in the ceremony will add something extra special to the day,” advises Sabine. “Children can take centre stage as a ring bearer or they could read a poem or an excerpt from a book. Some family members or friends could contribute to your day with a meaningful reading or a poem or even share an anecdote from your childhood or adulthood.” Perhaps you have a musical brother, a wordsmith sister or your dad sings in a male voice choir? Tap into your family and friends’ passions to add a stirring sense of togetherness and a celebration of all the loves in your lives.

From the rituals to the readings, whatever you decide on, remember to stay true to yourselves and look forward to a ceremony brimming with overwhelming happiness and love, which feel oh-so perfectly ‘you’.

MY SUSTAINABLE WEDDING

From upcycled décor to locally sourced blooms, there are so many small changes you can make to reduce the carbon footprint of your wedding. Here, three couples, who recently planned earthfriendly celebrations, share their insights

words Hannah May

When it comes to weddings, green is undoubtedly the new white. And while the balance between planning your dream day and achieving an ecofriendly event may appear like an impossibly fine one, rest assured that just a few small changes can garner huge and positive impact. The ultimate goal needn’t necessarily be a carbon neutral wedding (though this is easier than you might think), but to make conscientious decisions about the short and long term consequences of your day on the world around you.

This is exactly what newlyweds Daisy and George, Emily and Adam, and Holly and Ryan did. Taking a sustainable approach from the start, the couples share their top tips for planning a dream day without costing the Earth.

Daisy and George

“Sustainability was one of the most important elements for our wedding day and one of the things we were most proud of,” says Daisy, who married George during an outdoor ceremony at Camel Studio. Utilising the venue’s natural spaces as both backdrop and décor, the couple also adopted a local and seasonal brief for the floristry and food, which was largely vegetarian, but gave the option of meat dishes.

Sourcing a series of elements secondhand was another savvy and sustainable approach. “I always try to avoid fast fashion wherever possible and from the outset I only wanted to get my dress secondhand,” says Daisy, who found her gown on Stillwhite. “I simply had my dress altered to fit me and would not have done it any other way. I will also resell it to continue the cycle!” Daisy helped her bridesmaids to choose their gowns with a view to them being worn again, while the groomsmen were asked to don a navy suit they already owned.

“We have a new home and are going on our honeymoon to Costa Rica so it was fantastic to receive contributions towards those rather than receiving gifts we may not necessarily need,” says Daisy of the gift list dilemma. “We chose Patchwork because 50% of the registration fees go directly to environmental charities such as Friends of the Earth.” As for favours, they lovingly propagated their own houseplants a year before the wedding, planting them in pots they had made and painted.

Daisy and George didn’t compromise on the style factor either, selecting eco-friendly alternatives whenever possible that also looked stunning. “We rented a lot of the décor and garden games as we didn’t want to buy lots of things we might never use again,” explains Daisy, who chose dried petals for compostableonly confetti and collected shells to scatter amongst the tabletops and use as place settings, “which added a natural touch to the décor”.

An often-overlooked component, the couple put careful consideration into the environmental impact of travel to their wedding. “We encouraged friends and family to car share where possible and pooled the taxis to/from their accommodation,” says Daisy. “A few people flew in for our wedding too, which we were conscious about, so we started looking at ways to offset the emissions associated with our day. We calculated the mileage and modes of transport and used an offsetting tool to calculate the emissions and the cost to offset. We then chose to donate to reforestation schemes in the UK that we felt actively sequestered carbon while also promoting biodiversity, such as The Woodland Trust.”

“I think it’s really important to highlight the easy and fun things that can be done to reduce the impact in what can be a very wasteful industry,” concludes Daisy. “I must stress that we were not perfect, nor able to be 100% sustainable, but we tried our very best and it ultimately made our day feel much more ‘us’ so we were happy!”

Emily and Adam

“Adam and I endeavour to be as friendly as possible to the planet in our day-to-day lives, so we wanted to do the same when planning our wedding,” explains Emily. “It shocked me that weddings can have such a negative impact on the planet, producing as much as 20kg of plastic waste.”

They chose Mount Pleasant Eco Park as their venue for its array of green credentials. “As soon as we arrived at the venue, we loved its relaxed vibe,” enthuses Emily. “We also love that the food is all vegetarian/vegan. Being vegetarians, it was important for us to serve good plant-based food, as veggie food options at weddings can be quite bland and a bit of an afterthought. The ingredients used are either grown on-site in the allotments or organic.”

From the catering to the décor, Emily and Adam considered how to make everything more environmentally sound. “We tried to hire as much as we could including props, furniture and the men’s suits to avoid splashing out on things that we would likely only use once,” she says. “We also tried to keep our décor as sustainable as possible by either recycling (by using old wine bottles as table plan pieces) or by selling our candles and bunting after the event.” Emily’s sister made their confetti using dried flowers and their seasonal wedding flowers were all grown locally.

“I feel like absolutely nothing went to waste, which was so important to us,” she reflects. “If I could offer any advice to other couples, it would be to think about things that you want to have on your wedding day that could easily be reused or repurposed. Our wedding day artwork, created by Gemma Lessinger, formed part of our table plan decorations, but is a keepsake we can hang in our home and keep forever.”

“It’s very easy to get caught up in the Pinterest wedding madness but think about what you would keep and treasure after your wedding day,” she recommends.

Holly and Ryan

With a focus on sourcing locally and secondhand, Holly and Ryan’s wedding at Elm Farm reflected their eco-friendly lifestyle. “Being sustainable was always at the forefront of our minds when planning our wedding,” explains Holly. “I’m really passionate about caring for the planet and try to adhere to this in other aspects of my life, including my business, The Cornish High Street (thecornishhighstreet.co.uk).”

“I love buying things secondhand,” she elaborates. “Knowing I was giving something a new lease of life was particularly special for our wedding – it was lovely to know that something I had for my day had been a part of someone else’s special day. I also love supporting small businesses and did this as much as possible when sourcing.” Not only does their approach have a positive impact on the local economy, but it also helped to keep their personal expenditure down. Everything from Holly’s ex-display bridal gown and secondhand heels to the handmade raspberry mojito wedding favours proved to be both costeffective and highly personalised.

“The table décor was a standout part for me,” says Holly, who borrowed wooden logs for centrepieces, sourced wellington boots to use as vases and repurposed vinyl records into table numbers. “My aunty made lots of bunting using secondhand and scrap fabric, and we also borrowed napkins from someone who got married last year,” she adds.

In addition, they used confetti from Kehelland Trust made from cornflowers (“so totally natural!”), had dried flowers with water-based dyes that could be kept, bought a vegan and dairyfree wedding cake and even Holly’s engagement ring was made by a small business using sea glass – with as many material elements as possible then sold after the big day to minimise wastage.

“There were really minor decisions where we tried to keep the environment in mind too, such as using twine instead of plastic fish wire to hang our paper lanterns,” says Holly of the small details which – when combined within the bigger wedding picture – made all the eco-friendly difference.

MONEY MATTERS

Before you get caught up in the whirlwind of wedding planning, it’s essential to set a budget. Here are some top tips for planning a wedding that suits your vision as well as your bank balance

words Hannah May

feature | MONEY MATTERS
iStock.com/THEPALMER wedmagazine.co.uk 100 Cornwall #62 2022

Whether you’re feeling the pinch, unsure exactly how to budget for everything, or keen to cut down on costs and waste while still achieving a beautiful and personal day, when it comes to wedding planning: money matters. According to the National Wedding Survey by Hitched.co.uk, the average cost of a UK wedding stood at £17,300 in 2021 and, with the projected rate of inflation, this cost is set to jump in 2023. While expenditure continues to increase year-on-year, the number of couples seeking to reduce their budget to below £10,000 has risen from 28% in 2020 to 35% in 2022. It amounts to one thing: less might indeed be the new more. From the rise in micro and minimalist weddings to zero-waste events, there’s a palpable industry shift toward something more pared-back and conscientious, with a renewed emphasis on budget.

How much?

First off, think about your exact figures. Financial projections can be notoriously tricky – especially during unprecedented times such as the current cost of living crisis – but be brutally honest with exactly how much you’ll have to spend – and stick with it. Be aware of the sources of your cash, be it a personal savings account or parental support, and establish exact amounts as soon as possible, as well as how your cash flow will work with regards to release of funds.

Certain costs will need to be paid upfront and in full, while others can be paid in instalments or via payment plans, so be prepared to discuss this with your suppliers. Also put a percentage aside for contingencies and unforeseen costs (10% is recommended), as most couples do tend to overspend, unwittingly or otherwise. This should also help you to avoid finding yourselves in debt or financial arrears or having to dip into your mortgage fund or the like.

What are your priorities?

Unless you have an unlimited budget, you’ll have to prioritise your main spends. What are you unwilling to compromise on? Where can you afford to spend less? “Is it a priority for you to have an awesome photographer or showstopping cake?” asks wedding planner Hazel Parsons from Out of the Ordinary Weddings (outoftheordinaryweddings.com). “Do some research and be realistic about the cost of this and work out your budget around what is important to you.”

If you’re aware of your non-negotiables from the outset, you’ll be more likely to design a day that’s reflective of your original ideas, unique to you – and on budget. Think about your guests’ experience of food, entertainment and styling, along with the ‘big’ decisions such as the venue. Can you book your dream venue for less by hosting an off-season or midweek wedding (or with fewer guests), or drop the final course from your preferred caterer in favour of a dessert table supplied by your guests instead of wedding gifts? By adopting a flexible, creative and all-hands-on-deck approach, you’re more likely to free up cash that can be pooled into the aspects you simply can’t do without.

Stay on track

Keep a meticulous tab of your incomings and outgoings in whatever form works best for you (there’s a variety of apps, while many couples still swear by spreadsheets). If you notice that your budget is being squeezed early on, then figure out where you’ve overspent, and how to mitigate it. For example, if you splurged on the dress, can you recoup the extra cost by shopping in the sales for your bridesmaids’ outfits?

You’ll be amazed by how quickly things may spiral, so don’t be afraid to press pause and regularly review (and replan) every element of your expenditure. Also, take note on when the balance for everything is due, and ensure you’ll have the funds available at the right time to pay each supplier.

Get family involved

Tap into the talents and help of those around you, which will ease the burden of responsibility, add an extra sense of personalisation and should free up some cash. “If you’re looking to have some DIY aspects to your wedding, find out if your friends and family would like to be involved, rather than putting all the pressure on yourself in the lead-up,” suggests Hazel.

Is there a musician in the family who could perform during the ceremony, an

MONEY MATTERS
101

illustrator who could assist with the signage or a friend happy to bake a batch of cupcakes for favours? Don’t be afraid to enlist the help of your nearest and dearest in any ways that you – and they – feel most comfortable, competent and confident with.

Do you really need it?

With many of today’s couples subscribing to a waste-less ethos during the planning phases, join the modern green movement by asking yourself how not to accumulate too much stuff. A classic example is being left with a stack of vases, crockery, bunting and even furniture that you were so eager to buy… but now have absolutely no use for.

There’s a simple solution to avoiding both the expense and material accumulation associated with weddings: “hire not buy!” asserts Hazel. “Rather than having to buy all the cutlery, glassware and décor you need, investigate hiring these,” she says. “This will allow you to afford better quality décor and takes away the hassle of having to source and store everything months ahead of your big day, as well as the pressure to sell it on afterwards.”

In short supply

Distinguish the difference between your needs and wants – and who can help you to achieve them. Even if you’re desperate to book your favourite band, you can always ask if they can perform as a solo or duo instead of a more expensive five-piece act. Think about how you can whittle down, reduce, simplify, swap and borrow in order to save cash and plan a wedding that gives you the very best value and outcome for your money. “Discuss with suppliers what will work within your budget,” advises Hazel. “For example, you can chat with florists about which types of flowers are in season and grown locally to keep costs down while also having a beautiful display! It may be more affordable to go for relaxed cut arrangements as opposed to floral designs.”

Once you’ve established your budget, made a list of your top priorities and figured out the best way for others to help, there’s a host of ideas on how to save money and spend it wisely. By utilising the people and places around you as well as discussing your requirements and budget with suppliers – who are highly experienced in such matters –you’re more likely to achieve a wedding that’s both beautifully ‘you’ and bang on budget.

MONEY-SAVING HACKS

Timing is everything

Consider a wedding later in the day and save time and money by hosting a sunset ceremony ahead of a supper that leads straight into the evening party, for the ultimate of (purse-pleasing) whirlwind celebrations.

The complete package

Ask potential venues about out of season, midweek and promotional packages such as elopements or small weddings, as well as combined wedding and honeymoon deals, cancellations and any extras that might be available.

Stay put

By staging your ceremony, reception and evening do at the same venue, you won’t need to worry about transport, extra décor costs, additional venue or marquee hire fees – and can book shorter hire periods for performers, photographers and other suppliers.

Number crunching

Consider the size of your guest list. Cutting it down means having more people you actually want there, and you could then reinvest the money on enhancing their experience. Alternatively, make it a child-free event, selected or no plus-ones, or opt for an intimate wedding and host an after-party or beach barbecue at a later date.

No more dress stress

It is possible to find ‘the one’ without blowing your budget. Sample sales, designer days, off-the-peg, vintage and repurposing heirloom gowns are all ways to ensure a bespoke bridal look at a lower price. Visit boutiques and discuss it with them.

BYO and DIY

What can you bring to your day? Whether it’s drinks (remember you might have to pay corkage), desserts, DJ, hair and beauty skills... have a chat to friends who may be able to help. You could pick your own fruit to make jam for your cream tea, grow mini succulents to pot as décor or favours or recycle old tablecloths and craft your own bunting.

‘Tis the season

Certain elements such as the flowers and food tend to be cheaper if sourced seasonally and locally, so ask your suppliers if the time of year or day makes a difference to costing.

Professional planning

Enlist the services of a professional planner, stylist or coordinator, who will know the tricks of the trade and contacts to help you keep costs to a minimum.

Go digital

Online invitations, save the dates and even ceremonies live streamed to keep guest numbers down are all worth considering in order to stay within your budget.

let’s dance!

The first dance: a dread for some, a delight for others. Either way, thinking about it in advance will ensure your celebrations start on the right foot

Does the thought of the first dance fill you with terror or excitement? Between overanalysing it and assuming it’ll all come together naturally on the day, ask yourselves a few questions to get started, such as how do you envision it happening? And what will work best for you as a couple and the type of wedding you’re planning? You might want to have a little fun with it or flip the tradition on its head – whether that’s including a posse of your loved ones, incorporating your child guests or even getting your beloved pooch involved.

Then there’s the music. Choose a song that reflects your personalities: don’t conform to tradition or select the track that’s popular at the time if it doesn’t suit who you are as a couple. You might prefer a classic ballad, a symbolic replay of the record that your parents danced to on their wedding day or your all-time favourite get-on-the-dancefloor party track. An acoustic or live performance, vocals by a talented friend or even a karaoke session can make the first dance a unique and utterly ‘you’ event to relish and remember.

We’ve rounded up a range of first dance ideas to help you shimmy your way into married life to your very own beat...

Impromptu

One of the most popular choices, the impromptu first dance is usually the result of selecting a special song (or not) and simply rolling with it. Some couples practise a few of their moves in advance, but generally it’s a case of seeing where the

music and mood (and bubbly!) takes you. The endnote is a more relaxed, ‘nonperformance’ approach, signalling the start of the party with the mass migration of your guests onto the dancefloor as the tempo builds or switches into party mode.

Choreographed

A routine of some sort marks a more dedicated response to the first dance. You might have studied performance art, take regular salsa classes together or just love to move, so a choreographed dance will give you the perfect chance to show off your skills and repertoire.

Go romantic with a ballroom dance (rumba, anyone?), pay homage to your favourite film or musical by replicating one of its iconic dance numbers (think Dirty Dancing, Pulp Fiction, Grease, Footloose and Saturday Night Fever), learn the steps to a dance song (Macarena remains as infectiously fun as ever) or employ a professional to help you create your own dance routine to suit your ability and personalities.

Group dance

If you’re keen on taking the pressure off while upping the fun factor, then a group dance is the easiest solution. This could be a family affair (you two and the kids/your parents/entire extended family), the newlyweds and the bridal party or all the guests – and can be impromptu, choreographed or even take the form of a dance-off. The newlyweds could still have a centre-stage moment or performance within the dance, or blend into the troupe entirely.

LET’S DANCE!
105
Noah Werth Photography

It could also involve an outfit change, entertainment element (such as acrobatics, circus act, live band or light show) or a complete mash-up of music and dance styles, starting with a slow couple’s dance before blending into an upbeat family boogie followed by a group R&B routine with your gal pals (you can’t beat Beyoncé’s Crazy in Love, for example). Variations on group dances include line dancing (either instructor-led or with a screen playing instructions), a ceilidh or a folk dance. Ask your guests to submit their favourite song or to learn the moves to a pre-selected dance and give your DJ a list of well-known moves-in-the-lyrics songs such as YMCA, Time Warp and the Conga.

Professional dance performance

Employing a pair or group of professional dancers can double up as the first dance and wedding entertainment, and can take place alongside a couple’s dance or instead of. You could join in for the duration, toward the end or be the opening act – it’s entirely up to you.

The great thing about this option is that you can pick dancers and music to suit the theme and feel of your wedding. For example, if your wedding has a retro, rock and roll or vintage vibe, ask your dance act to perform The Bunny Hop, Jitterbug or Hand Jive – and ask your guests to learn them if they’d like to partake in the performance (giving them the element of choice takes the pressure off them too!). There are so many options, from belly dances and ballet to Bollywood, Argentine tango and Latin styles.

Father-daughter

If the groom isn’t thrilled (or remains terrified) of the first dance or you’d like to honour another special person instead of – or as well as – him, then switching partners is another option. Many brides begin the dance with their spouse before the father of the bride cuts in, but this could also be her brother, mother, sister, best friend, grandparent or child. When it comes to the first dance, do exactly what you want – dance The Loco-Motion with your mum before launching into a Disney megamix with your daughter and ending with Cha Cha Slide en masse! You could also congregate a few couples to join you, such as your siblings and their partners, mothers and fathers, aunties and uncles, and so on.

Opt out

It’s important to remember that the first dance, like so much else in modern weddings, is optional. If for any reason you can’t or don’t want to have one, then don’t. If you’re concerned about leaving that section out, then employ a professional dancer or musician to take to the stage in your absence or simply invite all your guests onto the dancefloor for the first song of the evening. If it’s nerves that’s prohibiting you, wait for the party to be in full swing for a first dance interlude once you’ve warmed into the party spirit or swap the first dance for a last dance at the very end of the night (or even surprise your spouse by saving it for the privacy of your honeymoon suite!).

A beautiful venue where you can make the memories that will last a lifetime.

IT’S A CELEBRATION!

We all love a floor-filler and most of us find it easy to unleash our inner Beyoncé when the lights dim and the music starts. But a DJ and light-up dancefloor aren’t the only way to celebrate your newly married status. Here are some options for celebrating tying the knot that don’t involve a D.I.S.C.O…

Fireworks

Celebrate post-ceremony with a mammoth firework extravaganza. Working especially well for late afternoon or early evening ceremonies in the autumn and winter months (when it gets darker earlier), combine the show with drinks or food trucks so you can mingle outside beneath a glittery curtain of stars. Guests brandishing sparklers make awesome photographs, too.

Ceilidh

A traditionally decked-out barn complete with strings of fairy lights, bunting and hay bales is perfect for barn dancing. Scottish ceilidh dances usually include a live band and a caller who explains the instructions for each dance. It’s a great way to get everyone up on their feet and mixing. Cue much fancy footwork and lots of laughs!

Quiz

Either individually or in teams, a wedding day quiz – complete with a host in a sparkly jacket if you have a willing volunteer! – is sure to create a fun-filled vibe. Continue your theme with a quiz that encompasses weddings (yours, other family members or perhaps famous people) or any other

theme or topic you choose. General knowledge will likely raise the competitive spirits and produce plenty of those ‘oh-I-knew-it!’ moments.

Bingo

Eyes down! Despite all eyes being on the happy couple during the ceremony, a game of classic bingo might be just the thing for you and your guests to enjoy, post-ceremony. We love wedding-themed bingo where each player has to cross out things on their bingo card that were said during the speech, for example: ‘my wife and I’, ‘Love’, ‘Thank you for coming’ etc. Or, alternatively, how about guest bingo where each participant has to tick off things from their bingo card that relate to the guests e.g. ‘this person knew the bride at school’ or ‘this person lived next door to the groom’.

feature | IT’S A CELEBRATION!
So a traditional disco isn’t your thing? There are so many awesome ways to celebrate in style on your wedding day. Here are some of our favourites
iStock.com/DKart 109

Karaoke

It’s not a do without a good old singsong so make a thing of it and go all-out with a professional karaoke set-up. Being in the spotlight can be optional so as not to terrify any reluctant singers, but feel free to suggest willing members of the wedding party. Bridesmaids, groomsmen or even your father-inlaw might form impromptu groups and you can listen to them belt out the classics.

Live band

Hire a band and then relax and enjoy them playing your favourite tunes after you’ve tied the knot. The sound of live music will always get the party started and, whether you opt for contemporary, blues, jazz, rock and roll or anything in-between, you’ll have plenty of dancers up and enjoying the tunes. You may be able to tailor the setlist to your requirements if your band is willing, and some bands are even open to guests joining them to perform.

Sports day

Sack races, egg and spoon or simply a bride in a voluminous bridal gown atop an orange space hopper – what’s not to love about an old-school sports day? You can go as competitive or low-key as you like with races or challenges, or how about a tug-of-war between the two families? If your venue allows it, use any outdoor space for garden games such as giant Jenga, chess, limbo, hook-a-duck, hoopla or even bouncy castles and gladiator-style duels or jousting sets. Pony or donkey rides or a petting zoo for your smaller guests would also add to the fete-like feel.

Murder mystery

Keep your guests guessing with a murder mysterythemed reception. Either go DIY or hire a company to organise it for you and be prepared for lots of props, plenty of red herrings and a soupçon of suspicion amongst your guests. This is a great way for guests to get to know each other too, so any newbies will be besties by the end of the evening.

Cinema screening

Watch your favourite movie from deckchairs on the lawn or ask your oldest friends or family members to create a montage of photographs from over the years and soak up the romance of an outdoor screening. Time permitting, your photographer or videographer may even be able to screen photographs or footage they have taken of the day. If you’re keen for a stage but don’t want a screen, you could hire musical theatre performers for a dramatic live performance of classic ballads from a selection of your favourite theatre shows.

Circus performers

Fill your venue’s outdoor area with living statues and walkabout entertainers, from stilt walkers to human trees coming to life – or even aerial artists or a synchronised swimming display if your venue happens to have a pool. Performers from all genres will ensure there is something awe-inspiring for every guest to enjoy and feast their eyes upon.

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR VENUE

Before you fall for the first venue you visit, get clued up on the essential questions

Choosing your wedding venue is a huge decision, and one from which many of your other decisions will follow. It’s oh-so easy to set your heart on the first country pile you visit but, before you make a decision, consider these key questions from wedding planner, Jenny Granlund of Jenny Wren Weddings & Events (jennywrens.com).

Then go ahead and make that all-important booking – safe in the knowledge that you’re prepped on the party-planning essentials.

• What is the capacity for a ceremony and reception?

• Does the venue have a ceremony licence?

• What ceremony locations are there, both inside and outside?

• Is the venue exclusive use?

• What is their availability like?

• What is included in the price?

• Look at the rooms and discuss whether room turnarounds will need to take place (for example, if the dinner is in the same room as the ceremony).

If so, who will take care of this?

Tipi Spaces

Tipi Spaces’ ivory white canvas Nordic tipis provide a versatile and truly enchanting blank canvas. Manufactured in Sweden, each tipi is designed to offer maximum durability and protection from the elements to give a fabulously flexible solution for any setting or style of event. Their striking structure ensures a wow-worthy centrepiece, while inside, the conical shape sculpts a more intimate space for your celebrations. And, boasting almost 50 years combined experience of project and luxury event management, the team is enthusiastically primed to achieve your vision by attending to all the details. tipispaces.co.uk

• Are there any break-out rooms away from the party for older guests or babies?

• Will there be a wedding coordinator on-site on the wedding day? What will they be taking care of?

• Is furniture provided?

• Is tableware provided?

• Can you bring in your own suppliers and catering company?

• Are toilets provided?

• What time do the licenses for music and alcohol run until?

• Are there restrictions concerning music?

• Is there the option to provide your own alcohol? Do they charge corkage?

• What day and time can you have access from?

• Is there accommodation on-site or close by?

• Do they allow fireworks?

• Do they allow confetti?

• Do they allow firepits?

• Are there dos and don’ts concerning decoration?

• What time does the hire end?

Framed by pink blooms, Phoebe and Ollie took their vows against the turquoise waters of the lake at Cornish Tipi Weddings.

Midas Touch

An online dating success story, romance blossomed for Phoebe and Ollie while she was living in Bristol and Ollie in Bath. The couple were enjoying a day of canoeing in Salcombe when Ollie popped the question in the most picturesque setting.

“It was a beautiful sunny day and we had packed a picnic,” recalls Phoebe. “Ollie saw a little desert island in the middle of the estuary and insisted we have our picnic there. He then got down on one knee and asked me to marry him!”

From south Devon to a tucked-away beauty spot close to the north Cornwall coast, Cornish Tipi Weddings provided an idyllic setting for their wedding. “It’s just five minutes from where we live and the most perfect wedding venue, especially now you can have the legal ceremony by the lake,” explains Phoebe.

The couple decided to tie the knot during an intimate lakeside ceremony surrounded by their closest family and friends ahead of a bigger reception the following week. “I always wanted a Mediterranean theme as I just love the colours,” explains Phoebe, who opted for a gorgeous palette. “The bright pink bougainvillea flowers against the turquoise water made us feel like we were in Greece, and my gold sequin dress added a bit of sparkle!” she says of the dazzling gown she made herself.

Completing the striking scene, Ollie donned a navy suit while the maid of honour and flower girl wore pink dresses to echo the flowers. “Our little chihuahua, Bella, made the cutest little ring-bearer and stole the show trotting up with the rings attached to her bespoke gold sequin tutu dress!” smiles Phoebe.

“As we only had a small ceremony, I went all-out on the invitations,” she explains. “I opted for a gold embossed acrylic invitation nestled in a navy velvet box on a bed of pink rose petals finished off with a watercolour of the venue.” Meanwhile, her mum and sister – who run a garden in Somerset where they grow their own flowers – created the breathtaking bouquet and floral display on the boat.

After taking their vows before the shimmering waters, the couple stole some romantic moments rowing across the lake while being serenaded by a saxophonist playing chilled Ibiza-style tunes. “We then hopped aboard a vintage campervan and went to our local beach for a swim and a surf! It was a really relaxed day that was just perfect for us,” says Phoebe.

“Standing on the pontoon in the middle of the lake after the ceremony with my new husband,” says Phoebe when asked to pinpoint her favourite moment, and as for planning advice, she asserts: “Delegate and just accept that not every single thing will get done, but no-one will notice!”

Love’s a Beach

“We matched online and had our first date at the Royal William Yard in Plymouth,” says Daisy-Mae, reflecting on her first encounter with Matthew. The romantic proposal that followed on the clifftops overlooking Hope Cove in Devon paved the way for a wedding in the wildly romantic cove of Lusty Glaze.

The easy-breezy beach setting inspired the day’s boho coastal styling. “I love dried foliage mixed with fresh roses in natural and blush colours,” says Daisy-Mae, who teamed her off-the-shoulder lace gown with a beautiful bouquet of neutral hues. Echoing the florals, the bridesmaids donned dresses in shades of taupe and blush – “with lots of sparkle!” – and wore boho braids in their hair in keeping with the day’s laidback vibe.

Keen to bring a DIY vibe to the day, Daisy-Mae bought many items from small businesses on Etsy and upcycled others, such as an antique mirror that she transformed into the seating plan. “We dried all the petals for confetti ourselves and made the candle favours,” she adds of their lovingly homespun approach.

Exchanging their own vows on the sand while looking out to sea made for a standout moment for the couple. “We really enjoyed having our ceremony on the sand,” she reflects. “Being on the beach and hearing the waves calmed our nerves.”

The relaxed, summery mood continued with the menu: after canapés and cold jugs of mojitos, guests tucked into a Mediterranean-style barbecue full of vibrant fresh salads and roasted vegetables followed by ice cream in the sunshine. “We had some fun photos and videographer shots using smoke grenades with the bridesmaids and groomsmen before the evening guests arrived,” says Daisy-Mae of one of her fondest moments.

Surrounded by their family and friends holding sparklers, the newlyweds kick-started the evening revelry with a first dance on the beach as the sun began to set, after which live band The Big Strut kept the dancefloor packed throughout the evening. “Dancing the night away to live music whilst looking out to the most beautiful sunset over the ocean was unforgettable. We loved every minute of the wedding day, from start to finish, and are beyond grateful to all those that made it happen!” reflects Daisy-Mae.

“My top tip would be to try and break down the planning into manageable chunks and not tackle it all at once,” she says by sound word of advice. “If you find yourself becoming overwhelmed, take a step back and try and turn the stress into excitement for the day.”

Truly, Madly, Deeply

“I met Jamie through Hinge at the start of the pandemic, which meant getting to know each other through messaging, which turned into phone calls, which turned into Zooms,” says Katherine of the couple’s lockdown love story. “When the restrictions lifted, we bubbled together and met for park walks as thankfully we lived near each other.”

Jamie chose to pop the question in Greenwich Park, the setting of many of these park dates, following a birthday lunch. “Jamie had packed wine and glasses and directed us to a spot that we’d sat in on one of our previous dates,” explains Katherine. “He was very nervous and started saying lots of lovely things, none of which I now remember as it all turned into a blur when he asked me to be his wife.”

The couple picked Cornwall for their wedding. “Jamie is from Devoran and we wanted to find somewhere that could accommodate as many of our guests as possible,” she says. “We fell in love with Boconnoc on first viewing, so when an August date became available, we had no hesitation.”

Designing a colourful day with a “modern and relaxed vibe” filled with gorgeous flowers in a carnival of pink hues, Katherine and Jamie carefully considered all elements for a wedding full of personality. “Working with Imogen from Rose & Co Floral Studio was a highlight for me, she brought my vision to life in a way I hadn’t imagined possible,” says Katherine.

“We both love music so this was an important part of the day,” she reveals. “We could hear the string quartet playing from the bridal suite, which had a very calming effect as the nerves built. It also meant that our guests could relax and enjoy the music before the ceremony.”

After sun-drenched vows on the lawn, guests enjoyed drinks and canapés alongside a soundtrack from live performer Kaj. The speeches were then delivered before a sit-down feast of locally sourced dishes such as line-caught wild sea bass and Cornish summer berry pudding.

“Our photographer and videographer took us up to one of the fields for dusk photos and looking back at the house – with everyone milling around the cocktail van and hearing the laughter – was a real highlight,” says Jamie of a particularly magical moment.

On returning for the evening celebrations, Katherine and Jamie joined guests at the airstream mobile bar for signature cocktails. “The Buffalo team helped us to pull together a list of cocktails that blew everyone’s socks off,” says Katherine. It was the perfect fuel for a brilliant night of dancing and revelry thanks to a high energy set by Truly Medley Deeply. “Our guests are still raving about the band to this day,” says Jamie.

Looking back, Katherine is replete with advice. “Once you’ve chosen an element, stop scrolling. It’s so easy to become sucked into the vortex that is wedding planning and second guess yourself,” she says. “Don’t be afraid to source things yourself or discuss your budget with suppliers. There are amazing people out there who will respect your budget and be creative with it. And keep remembering why you’re doing this and don’t let the planning overwhelm your relationship.”

At the Water’s Edge

James and Dadrian treated guests to fabulous food, fun entertainment and mesmerising sea views during their dreamy beach wedding at Carbis Bay

Love blossomed for James and Dadrian after being introduced by a mutual friend in 2014. “We had been discussing marriage for a number of years and one Christmas Day, after we’d been at work (we are both nurses), I popped the question,” reveals James. “It wasn’t super romantic, but it worked for us.”

Located within touching distance of the shore, The Beach Hut at Carbis Bay Estate made the perfect setting for their sand-between-the-toes celebrations. The couple enlisted Natalie Blake Wedding Design to help bring their dream beach wedding to life. “She was amazing, bringing together our differing and opposing ideas into one uniform and coherent vision,” comments Dadrian of the blue and pink scene spliced with an abundance of lush greenery.

Dressed in suits to match the palette, the couple exchanged vows before an arch bedecked with lush petals and tropical leaves framing the ocean. The ceremony was followed by an extended drinks reception, giving the newlyweds plenty of “time to mingle and thank guests for coming to our day”. Instead of favours, James and Dadrian booked a caricaturist to draw guests’ portraits, while singer Lee Gordon delivered a stirring soundtrack throughout the celebrations. “He was phenomenal and made the day so very special,” says Dadrian.

Another memorable aspect was the “amazing” menu, which guests tucked into while gazing at the ocean. Sharing platters of Mediterranean meats and cheeses primed tastebuds for the sumptuous barbecued main course featuring the likes of Cornish sausages, beef burgers, beef and pork loin steaks and vegetarian skewers.

“We had the most amazing ice cream and lemon posset for dessert and, in the evening, there was fillet steak and portions of fish and chips. We couldn’t eat it all, but it was completely divine,” adds James.

“We danced the night away and drank lots of wine until about midnight, then said our goodbyes and made our way to the hotel’s suite,” he reminisces. “We slept beautifully and woke up to the sound of crashing waves and seagulls.”

Choosing the ceremony as their favourite moment, the venue’s location was a personal highlight for the couple. “The venue being on the beach allowed moment after moment of happy memories,” says James, revealing a particular memory of his brother stealing his girlfriend away to propose on the sands, and many guests ending up getting rather wet in the sea!

“Make sure you plan early on,” Dadrian offers by way of advice. “If you’re keeping an eye on the finances, make sure you set out an initial cost outline and try not to stray too far from this. And if you can stretch to it, hire a wedding planner,” he adds. “Ours was a godsend!”

Nature’s Finest

Clarizza and Alex first met while studying at Loughborough University. “We lived in the same halls of residence and finally got together after a fateful night at the student union!” reveals Clarizza. Years later, Alex proposed at sunset on a hill in Hainault Forest, setting their Cornish wedding plans into motion.

Falling for the enchanting climes of Tredudwell Manor, the couple had a clear vision for their day. “We wanted to keep the decoration simple and keep the focus on the beauty of our Cornish surroundings,” explains Clarizza. “Our main decoration was 1,000 origami cranes, which we made with the help of friends and family – a Japanese tradition that symbolises love and the teamwork required to make a successful marriage.”

Along with the origami cranes, the couple made and borrowed much of the other décor, from Alex’s bespoke stationery design to the bottles and jars collected by friends and family. “It was important to us that many of the decorations could be reused at other weddings or recycled,” says Clarizza.

Conducted by Cornish Celebrants beneath the ceremony temple, the outdoor ceremony was, in Clarizza’s words, “perfect”. “The first thing I saw walking down the aisle with my dad was my brother playing the guitar. I heard his voice crack and it instantly made me cry,” she says of a particularly memorable moment.

“Seeing my stunning wife-to-be walking down the aisle, being in such a beautiful setting with all our friends and family together… It was a struggle to keep myself together,” confesses Alex. The newlyweds then joined guests at a ‘feasting station’ for a bounty of nibbles, photos and mingling before sitting down for the wedding breakfast.

“It was really important that as much of the food as possible was seasonal and locally sourced,” says Clarizza. Mains – of slow-roasted shoulder of lamb, and butternut squash and beetroot wellington, alongside a medley of seasonal vegetables – were rounded off with his-and-hers desserts in the form of chocolate brownies with dairy-free ice cream and apple and raspberry hazelnut crumble.

An evening of dancing and merriment ensued, leaving Clarizza and Alex looking back in awe at their dream-filled day. “For us, our friends and family being in once place was important, so we wanted each and every person to feel like they were part of our day. Think about what’s actually important to you and concentrate on those,” says Clarizza when asked for her advice.

“Play on each other’s strengths,” she adds. “I love a spreadsheet and planning the core things, but I wasn’t overly interested in the details, which Alex was amazing at. All the stationery and decoration came together because of him.”

Never Too Much

Packed with pizza, ice cream and infectious grooves, Tiri and Jordan’s wedding at Stennack Farm was a fun-filled celebration

Although they both grew up in Hayle and attended the same primary and secondary schools, it wasn’t until their later teenage years that Tiri and Jordan became a couple after spending time together at the local skate park.

A decade later, Jordan came home from work one day and insisted the family went to the beach together. “He drove us to Porthleven and we walked to Loe Bar,” recalls Tiri. “Jordan and our eldest son, Theo, were ahead of us and had stopped and waited for Bruce, our youngest son, and I to catch up. Jordan was down on one knee and Theo showed me the box with the most beautiful ring in. It was the easiest yes I have ever said. Then we walked to Loe Bar beach and sat on the sand watching the sun set.”

Flanked by countryside, Stennack Farm offered the blank canvas setting the couple were seeking. Selecting a minimalist aesthetic and colour scheme of warm neutral tones, the stunning floristry captured Tiri’s vision perfectly, featuring petals in shades of toffee and latte. She also sourced cheesecloth runners and napkins, made single stem flower holders and designed their seating plan and welcome signs to complete the stylish scene.

“All we wanted to do was have fun with our family and friends and get drunk as we hadn’t all been together for so long,” says Tiri. “After the ceremony we decided to have the welcome drinks and get the speeches out of the way so we could go wild!” A selection of pizzas went down a treat, ranging from margherita and barbecue chicken to vegan pomodoro, before the sun came out for the arrival of Mr B’s ice cream van playing Here Comes The Bride. “I have worked for Mr B’s for years, so I loved making the ice cream for our own wedding,” she says of the lip-smacking finale to the feast.

Music was another key component to the day, with musicians Archie Ray and Pete Hamilton both delivering atmospheric sets. Saxophonist Daniel Costello switched up the tempo ahead of a DJ set that saw guests on the dancefloor until midnight.

“Our first dance was to Never Too Much by Luther Vandross – played by Daniel on the sax – then everyone joined in,” says Tiri, recalling her favourite moment from the day, after which she reveals her top tips for other couples. “Remember the day is for you two – just have fun and do what you want to do,” she says. “We wanted to do the ‘I dos’ then get drinking, dancing and having fun. We wanted our guests to feel relaxed and the children to run around and eat as much ice cream and pizza as they liked!”

The couple followed up their wedding with their dream honeymoon: a three-week backpacking adventure around Thailand with their children. “We visited Chiang Mai, Railay, Phi Phi, Khao Sok and Bangkok,” reflects Tiri. “We took private boat trips most days and spent hours snorkelling, visited an elephant sanctuary, swam in waterfalls, ate so much street food, swam with wild silver leaf monkeys, hiked to the highest point of Thailand and just had the best time!”

White Wedding

Sparks flew as soon as Hannah and Tobias first laid eyes on each other at college. “I knew he was special from the moment I met him and we just clicked straightaway,” she reflects.

After Tobias proposed beneath the Eiffel Tower and wedding planning began, the couple experienced another case of instant attraction when they came across Trevenna. “We viewed a lot of venues, and none of them compared to the magic we felt as soon as we visited Trevenna for the first time,” says Hannah. “We loved how naturally beautiful the entire venue and gardens were, and the staff were incredible from day one.”

Inspired by the natural beauty of the venue, the couple opted for a theme of “timeless elegance”, blending minimal styling and a palette of white and neutrals with the garden setting. “We wanted to look back on it all in decades to come and still love every detail,” explains Hannah. “My dream was to have a romantic, spring garden wedding, surrounded by lots of white flowers, timeless details and the picturesque countryside.”

The florals were key to the pared-back scene, and the clusters of white roses, orchids and hydrangeas “were the biggest and most beautiful flowers I have ever seen”, enthuses Hannah. Thoughtful touches were also woven throughout, including personalised welcome letters. “I wanted each guest to really feel the love we have for them from the moment they arrived at our wedding,” she says.

Carrying the aesthetic in dreamy style, Hannah’s dress was the fruition of a long-held dream. “I’ve always known exactly how I wanted my wedding dress to look, so it was an absolute dream come true to have it custom-made,” she says. Lovingly made by Bridget Scott, the gown was a stunning blend of delicate detailing, including hundreds of Swarovski crystals and pearls – which her mum painstakingly took from her own wedding dress and sewed on – and embroidered details including the wedding date, the pair’s initials and ‘written in the stars’ across the train.

The feast was another priority for the food and wine-loving couple. After a selection of canapés washed down with peach bellinis, guests feasted on smoked salmon, pan-fried sea bass fillet, slowroasted beef, stem ginger poached pear and rich dark chocolate tart, which proved a highlight in a day full of cherished moments. “All of our loved ones were sat in front of us happily chatting and laughing together; it was in that moment Tobias and I looked at one another and we really soaked it all in,” says Hannah.

“Every minute was a magical and surreal dream come true,” she continues, reflecting on their celebrations. “It was the most love-filled, happiest and perfect three days of our entire lives.”

“Make sure you remember to stay present and enjoy every second, including the planning process and the build-up,” she advises other couples. “I did a meditation with my sister and parents on the morning of the wedding to help become completely present and in the moment. It was such a special memory and something I’m so happy we did.”

Plan a so-you celebration with these top tips from the wedding gurus. This issue, we look at ideas for making your guests feel welcome

NOTES ON A WEDDING

Feast time.

Bring your guests together the night before the wedding - perhaps over a sit-down meal, barbecue or picnic - to welcome them while giving them a chance to meet each other in a relaxed setting and build up excitement for the next day! Hazel

Speak easy.

Does your partner’s family speak a different language? Including their language throughout the day will make them feel welcome. Even if you don’t have a bilingual ceremony, ensure the order of service is in both languages so they can follow along as well as your menus and signage. Sophie

Warm welcome.

Designating someone to meet and greet your guests will help them feel instantly welcome. Choose a member of your family or bridal party or a member of staff who can let guests know the order of the day and answer any questions. Hazel

Good start.

Are your guests staying on-site with you? Leaving welcome bags in their rooms filled with local information and refreshments is a thoughtful gesture. Sophie

Liquid refreshment.

Show your guests they will be well looked after throughout the day by offering a glass of fizz or a soft drink (tea, coffee or hot chocolate go down well for

the colder months) as they arrive at the ceremony. As well as helping them relax into the ceremony, it will introduce them to the team who will be taking care of them. Hazel

Time out.

Not all guests will want to be in the hustle and bustle of the party, so create quiet spaces with comfy chairs for them to retreat to. Sophie

A personal touch.

Personalised place settings are a fantastic icebreaker. Some recent examples we have seen include name cards with a picture of a celebrity with the same name (e.g. a guest called Danny may have a picture of Danny DeVito) and Lego figures representing each guest. Hazel

Sign of the times.

Your guests will want to know what’s going on and where everything is – make these things obvious with creative signage so they don’t have to ask! Sophie

In the picture.

Including your guests’ photographs at your wedding, whether it’s displaying their wedding photos or a photo of each family group, will encourage conversation and stir fond memories. These could work either as a separate display or incorporated into the table display, such as a place setting or part of the centrepiece. Hazel

Role play.

Involve your guests in the day, whether it’s giving individual guests a particular role (such as a reading at the ceremony, introducing the first dance, helping as an usher with car parking and guiding other guests), involving the whole congregation in songs at the ceremony or adding interactive elements to the speeches. Hazel

Fabulous favours.

Put some thought into your favours. Think about adding a personal touch or writing a little note explaining how much it means to you that they are there to celebrate your wedding. Jessica

Happy feet.

Ensure your guests keep on dancing well into the night by providing them with flip-flops or flat shoes to change into if their heels get too much. Jessica

Child’s play.

Inviting children to your wedding? Book a company that provides a childcare and entertainment service so their parents can relax. If your venue has the space, you could also hire a bouncy castle or outdoor garden games. Jessica
