A CEREMONY TO REMEMBER

Don’t be fooled by the idea that the after-party should be the most fun and celebratory part of your day. Because if you truly want a wedding that’s packed with the personalisation factor, start by designing a unique and utterly ‘you’ ceremony. Rather than being regarded simply as the formal proceedings required before the reception, it will stand out as one of the most heart-warmingly memorable moments of the entire event. This is where Perfect Day Ceremonies steps in, which is run by Cornwall-based celebrant Sabine Smith to help couples achieve their dream day from its very beginning. “I want your ceremony to reflect your personalities and I will spend time with you to create an amazing ceremony, which you will remember forever,” she enthuses. After living in the county for the past 21 years, she is highly adept at helping couples discover the most spectacular place to say ‘I do’ (or whatever words you’d like!). Whether you envision uttering your vows on a cliff-top, exchanging rings in an ancient forest or staging a sand ceremony on a beach, there are practically no limitations when it comes to the ‘where’. By considering exactly what type of wedding you want, Sabine consults closely with every couple to make their every whim a characterful reality, from handfastings to ring warmings, live performances, or even a group rendition of your favourite song. As well as wedding ceremonies, Sabine can also officiate and Paul Keppel Photography

incorporate everything from naming ceremonies to renewal of vows and a range of rituals that will reflect your love story, belief system and personalities for a ceremony both befitting and bespoke. perfectdayceremonies.co.uk

MODERN LOVE

Stripped-back, sleek and achingly chic, this styled shoot offers inspiration for the contemporary bride across two standout venues in Cornwall’s countryside, celebrating the draw of a homestay wedding in the county. There’s The Stack, a reclaimed 19th century engine house where the county’s ancient mining heritage meets modern-rustic styling and views across the Fal Valley. Licensed for civil ceremonies for up to 40 guests, this unique wedding venue is a dream setting for an intimate celebration, with its hot tub, al fresco kitchen and cosy cinema basement room all set within rolling countryside. Modern styling works beautifully with the historic building, the crumbling stone and sunken tin-roofed wedding pavilion styled with a desaturated palette, delicate white anemones and blackened foliage. A cloud-like installation of anemones and pampas grass offers the perfect contrast to the cubic ceramics and textures of stone and concrete. Then there’s The Hide, a modern retreat for a honeymoon, its striking architecture proving inspiring for photographer Carla Towill of The Unbridled. “The concrete makes a real architectural statement and was really important to the concept of the shoot,” she explains. “We wanted to strip things back and really focus on what marriage is about, working with the natural textures, clean lines and bold architecture, as well as the botanical grounds.” The gowns carry this contemporary concept perfectly in fluid cuts and luxe silk, from a highnecked two-piece and plunging maxi wrap dress to a billowing shoulder-baring gown finished with statement earrings.

Already home to collections by Pronovias, Wendy Makin, Wilderly Bride and Mary’s Bridal, the Cornish boutique is awash with a world-renowned and eclectic mix of fashions for every type of bride. “Each gown embodies a fierce femininity, fitting individual body as well as it does the individual spirit,” says Madi Lane. It’s the attention to detail that we’re especially drawn to, with delicate appliqués, eye-catching embellishments and exquisite floral and fauna laces combining to jawdropping effect. From figure-hugging sheaths in Chantilly lace and spectacular A-lines with boned bodices to demure charmeuse gowns with deep plunge necks and V-shaped illusion backs, each confection is a masterclass in couture design. And with features including detachable tulle and lace circular sleeves, sheer tulle overskirts with floating pearls, and sequin studded botanical lace, Madi Lane merges contemporary design with classic style for the most romantic and seductively feminine frocks that redefine the swoon factor. That’s not all. The latest gowns from Pronovias will soon be gracing the rails of the boutique. 10 TRENDS WE LOVE Ivory & Co, Bridal Gossip

New florals

Lillian West, Elaine Rawlings Bridal Boutique

Floral embellishments are nothing new, but remain tantalisingly en vogue by being constantly reworked. Think hand-stitched 3D buds and petals, giant silk corsages, bold and vibrant prints, vine-like embroidery, leaf motifs and elaborate floral lace and appliqués cascading everywhere from the skirt and bodice to the sleeves and dramatic floral trains and veils.

Deep V-necks and backs Plunging necklines range from navel-deep to over-scooped sweethearts, depending on how low you want to go. Décolleté designs can be made more demure with sheer and illusion panelling, or bolder via cut-outs and corset bodices, while deep plunging and bare backs provide another sensuous and show-stopping way to wear the trend.

Statement sleeves The trending sleeves are all about volume, with puff, bell and especially balloon sleeves stealing the spotlight. It’s something of a Regency-inspired affair featuring long poet styles, short and pleated, and detachable sleeves in organza and tulle. Combine two top looks by choosing off-theshoulder balloon sleeves for boho romance at its most swoon-worthy.

Thigh-high splits Centre or side, it doesn’t matter, so long as you stylishly flash some femme fatale-style thigh while making your grand entrance. From minimalist starched Mikado skirts to floaty tulle with plenty of whimsy, it’s one of the most wearable features du jour.

10 TRENDS WE LOVE

Asymmetry Making its much-anticipated resurgence on the runways, asymmetry combines careful composition with casual playfulness to spectacular effect. Fabric selection and silhouetting are key elements, with Grecian style drapery, bias-cut A-lines, skewed and one-shoulder necklines, and high-low skirts all making a head-turning appearance. And with one-sided cascading florals, ruffling and appliqué detailing, off-centre has never been so on point.

Corset bodices Square necklines, beading, sequins and exposed boning, today’s corsetry takes its cue from Bridgerton and features everything from risqué, cleavagebaring bodices to elegant structural styles, exaggerated hourglasses and flattering A-lines.

Cut-outs The cut-out craze is not only centred on small flesh-exposing strips and shapes, but now also includes criss-cross strapping and midriff flossing (thin straps that wrap around your bare midsection), which are perfect for open-waisted dresses or separates such as crop tops. Picture chic portrait backs, romantic sweetheart and keyhole bodices, and sexy side, U, V and triangle cut-outs as part of a very en vogue ensemble.

Texture and dimensions Whether you wish to add a single embellishment to a pared-back gown or create a look layered with interest, textural and dimensional elements are one the easiest and most high-fashion options. Pick from pleating, folded origami styles, mixed materials, floating florals, tucks, woven patterns, latticework and dimensional and detachable features to bag plenty of style points.

Bows and ruffles One of the best ways to modernise or personalise an outfit is to add a little extra something, especially a detachable or in-built maxi bow, which gives a palpably regal air while adorning the shoulder, waist or back. Meanwhile, double bows lend a preppy or vintage vibe and ruffles – of any kind and placed anywhere from the straps to the skirt – are an indisputable winner.

So any shoe with a swoon factor that also has investment potential will hit the mark. From raffia and woven linen to fancy flats, satin slingbacks and designer heels, select your footwear simply by how fabulous it makes you look and feel. Whether you’re a guest or the mother of a nearly-wed, the prospect of finding the perfect outfit for an eagerly awaited wedding can be a daunting task. “Styles, shades, shapes and colours – there are so many options!” says Christine Trewinnard, who designs and handcrafts exclusive bridal gowns and bespoke garments from her Cornish studio. “We are all a unique shape too and it takes confidence to wear something outside our usual clothes choice.” Drawing on her vast experience working at top London Haute Couture Houses, Christine is passionate about helping her clients find this confidence through the design process. “We all have a ‘wardrobe personality’, and when you know what yours is, and understand why it works so well for you, it makes choosing so much easier,” she says. “I love helping my clients understand their ‘wardrobe personality’ and to find their perfect individual materials, styles and colours. Often, my advice is: don’t be afraid to mix it up a little. Team jersey with linen, satin with crepe, wool with chiffon, complementing colours and textures.” Elegant, simple and strikingly individual, this shoot showcases some of Christine’s occasion wear designs in the setting of a light-filled Georgian rectory in the Cornish countryside. From a full-length midnight blue gown and luxe velvet wrap dress to a light, flowing lilac ensemble and tailored jacket, the looks are finished with handcrafted headwear specially designed for each outfit. “A treasured item, handcrafted and personal to you, is too great a garment to wear just once. I’m often asked to create something that can be worn again to a celebration, party or dinner date! It’s time and money well spent, as the possibilities are limitless if you have something created for you. The design will be unique, the fit and proportion will be perfect,” says Christine. “While couture clothing may be one of a kind, it doesn’t have to be worn once in a lifetime.”

Cold Therapy A natural form of medicine, cold therapy has a long-held history of health benefits that include boosting the lymphatic system, immunity and metabolism. It’s also reputed to lower heart rate and blood pressure while improving everything from memory to fatigue. In addition, its more recent association with mental health and an emerging body of research hails it as a medication-free remedy for mood disorders and even depression. Hydrotherapy is one of the easiest and most popular ways to enjoy the positive effects from cold therapy, and – having just completed another bout of all-season sea swimming myself – one I can personally vouch for. Start your day with a cold shower (yes, really!), sink into an ice bath, or opt for a more immersive, ‘blue health’ experience by spending time amongst the region’s coastal surrounds with a spot of wild or open water swimming. The idea is to do what’s comfortable and ease your body into the water and temperature drop gradually. Start in summer (or with tepid shower or bath water) to slowly acclimatise in order to build resilience to the cold, which should increase your ability to stay submerged for longer to reap the mental and physical rewards. I swear by ‘skins swimming’ (costume only), but there’s absolutely no shame in wearing a wetsuit, and you’ll still feel the endorphin rush and elemental sense of connection. But always remember – safety first. That means assessing your surrounds such as sea state, as well as your own physical condition and any pre-existing health problems. Certain conditions such as sickle cell disease can elicit severe reactions with cold exposure, so make sure you seek professional medical advice before proceeding with caution.

Self-Care Rituals The modern self-care movement continues with gusto, but with an enhanced sense of intention, awareness and accessibility to enable everybody to find a way to promote their own individual sense of wellness. This largely starts at home with daily rituals or activities that require little time or effort but garner long-lasting results. One of the leading trends – and another I can attest to – is journalling or, more specifically, keeping a gratitude journal. In it, you can dedicate just a few words or lines of appreciation to help reframe your world view and find perspective to establish a positive mindset. Similarly, a focus on mental fitness through a mind gym will hone in on any self-limiting thoughts and actions to help improve your confidence, create coping mechanisms for difficult people or situations, and achieve your goals with a more controlled and calm approach to life. Gardening and keeping or growing plants is another activity that enhances a sense of self by allowing a space in which to tend to something, while practising mindfulness and the art of ‘slow’. Any greenery in and around your abode – from potted herbs to polytunnels – will also help establish an atmosphere and aura of relaxation and cultivation. This can be further accentuated with aromatherapy, a dedicated skincare routine, a healthier plant-based diet, and outdoor exercise. Most importantly, endeavour to carve out time specifically for any activity that aids healing, recovery and deep relaxation, such as meditation, reading, music and yoga nidra, which is a highly effective sleep and stress-busting aid that has also been proven to reduce anxiety.

Rewilding Though there’s nothing new about the joy of communing with nature, it’s all the modern-day rage for a myriad of reasons. Not only has our awareness of the environment heightened through the climate crisis, but a refocus on outdoor activity due to the pandemic has reinvigorated our desire for everything green. Put simply, it’s all about the outdoors, but with a definite wild edge. In a move away from comfort toward something more primal, rewilding experiences including foraging, fishing, tree planting and ‘forest bathing’ (or what most of us know as wild walks) are all popular pursuits in wellness. Optimise your wellbeing experience by ensuring that your wild escapades are also a digital detox and feature some ‘talk and walk’ therapy by embarking upon the journey with a friend or – better yet – together as a couple to tease out any pre-marital issues while you reconnect immersed in nature. Choose from a daily beach walk, skyrunning (training at altitude, or a sand dune or hill-sprinting version of it), a pilgrimage or ‘soul hike’ in a poignant place or to a religious landmark, or even a weekend of wild camping. They’re all ideal ways to combine escapism with purpose and adventure to feed mind, body and soul in a rewarding and rewilding way.

Trelonk Wellbeing

Grown in the nutrient-rich Cornish soil on the Roseland Peninsula, the highimpact, plant-based formulas are grouped into three categories that target specific conditions and complaints: ‘Power Through’ (for muscle and soft tissue pain, joint and bone pain, and chronic conditions), ‘Head Strong’ (for reducing stress, improving focus, and increasing confidence and positivity) and ‘Lights Out’ (for hyperactivity, insomnia, and dietary sleep issues). Overthinkers will be calmed into slumber by the relaxing hit of lavender, clary sage and petitgrain alongside the mind-clearing properties of vetiver and Indian sandalwood in the ‘Lights Out’ range. Meanwhile, the gorgeous blend of bergamot and ylang-ylang in the ‘Head Strong’ range is brilliant for de-stressing and balancing the mind. All ranges can be purchased in the form of 10ml bottles of essential oil (ideal for adding a few drops to a bath or steam diffuser, or blended with a carrier oil for massage) alongside other effective delivery mechanisms including aroma patches and nasal inhalers. GOING GREEN Going green means more than an eco-friendly ethos as it finds new form in the world of fashion. From dark fern and light sage to pastel mint and earthy pistachio, green is grooms wear’s current colour crush. Whether you select your favourite shade and wear it as a three-piece suit or choose a single feature or accessory such as your tie, waistcoat, blazer or boutonnière, any tint from the spectrum will freshen up your ensemble. Turn heads with a striking forest green suit, achieve rustic dapper with mossy tweed, or layer a mix of tones for a look bursting with depth. Perfect for a country, botanical-styled or nature-inspired shindig, green is as gorgeously perennial as it is tantalisingly on-trend. 1. ASOS asos.com 2. Favourbrook favourbrook.com 3. NEUTRAL TERRITORY

Neutrals are the mark of a man with his finger firmly on the fashion pulse. From sand-coloured suits to pale ochre separates and oatmeal chinos, a washed-out palette is all the rage everywhere from the runways to the tailors. Highly wearable and easy to customise, neutrals appear chic, cool and effortless while firmly residing in the high-fashion-meets-hint-of-dandy territory of grooms wear. From white to tan, consider the full range of hues as your stylistic base before splicing some colour or pattern into your outfit through the minutiae. A palette of pretty shades and romantic detailing create a dreamy scene for an elopement in the Cornish countryside photography Pink Wave Photography styling The Youngest Child

There’s something incredibly romantic about stealing away for a just-fortwo wedding and, with its captivating landscape and away-from-it-all charm, Cornwall is the ultimate location to bask in those cherished moments in complete privacy. Here, Chycara, a tucked-away venue set amidst acres of gardens, provides a picturesque backdrop for a dreamily styled elopement. Taking inspiration from the natural surroundings, the soft palette of cream, peach and pink blends seamlessly with the bloom-filled grounds and tones of the barn. Florals are key to the aesthetic – a draped ceremony arch adorned with clusters of peach, cream and muted pink flowers and foliage makes a striking setting for the vows, while blooms are central to the table styling, with candles, gold tableware and beaded charger plates

We’re loving these lending a luxe accent. SimplyUniqueUk, Etsy sweet and unique stationery continues the floral theme, and the cake, with its subtle marbled tiers wedding ideas The and draped detailing, makes a sweet and simple centrepiece. The bride carries the soft words Elizabeth Chester

aesthetic in her delicate jewellery and shoulder-baring dress; cloaked in floral appliqué, light-catching sequins and heaps of tulle, it couldn’t be more perfect for this pretty-asa-picture scene.

With wedding season in full swing, it may be that you see similar ideas and themes pop up again and again… so feel free to use them for inspiration – there’s a reason they’re popular, after all. We’ve picked out some of our favourite ideas for bringing a personality-packed touch to your day.

Personalised aisle runners This can thread a truly personalised feel into your ceremony before it has even begun. Aisles can be created in a range of different fabrics to tie in with your theme – burlap or jute for an outdoor ceremony, for example – or your aisle can be printed with your names, wedding date, or even a surprise message to your other half. We’ve also seen famous quotes and song lyrics printed beneath the happy couple’s feet.

piece of advice during the day. Once written, these are lovely to display at your venue, hung on a tree or simply used as a garland decoration at your reception. Either leave the cards blank for your guests’ wise words or prompt some responses with headings such as ‘Always…’, ‘Never…’ and ‘Sometimes…’. Once your cards are complete,

VictoriaStewardSigns, Etsy

Go beyond paper and ask guests to write their advice on wooden blocks, to create a Jenga-style tower packed with advice from your nearest and dearest. This makes a lovely display on the day and a truly special keepsake for years to come. You can even organise a game of Jenga on future wedding anniversaries and see whether you have heeded the advice! A similar idea, for arty types, is to create a heart shape made from either driftwood or old corks. Once you have created the shape, guests can then write their messages across each cork or piece of driftwood, and by the end you should have a beautiful and bespoke piece of artwork brimming with well wishes.

DebbiePatchworkLady, Etsy

Create a quilt guestbook For a really homespun approach, leave your guests small squares of fabric to sign at your guestbook station, and then spend time after your wedding day sewing them together to create a quilt bedecked with your guests’ words. This will become a lovely keepsake that will keep you both warm, and cover you in wishes, throughout your marriage.

Confetti bars are a super-cute and simple way to decorate your venue. We love antique desks or drawers stuffed with different shades of confetti, for guests to help themselves to. Self-service bar The idea of a self-service bar at a wedding will surely be met with rapturous applause. Create a bespoke setting with chalkboard or neon signs – depending on your theme – and a bar set-up to match. We love the idea of mismatched antique drinking vessels or a prosecco or champagne wall where guests can simply help themselves to a glass of bubbles. Huge jars full of garnishes such as cucumber, strawberries and mint for Pimm’s, or various straws and stirrers for cocktails, will look visually stunning. Edible flowers frozen inside ice cubes are beautiful, and little ones will love this too, making their water or juice much more grown-up! You may wish to ask a responsible best man or bridesmaid to take turns to watch over the bar to rein in any extra enthusiasm as the evening goes on!

LOVE THROUGH A LENS

How will you remember your wedding day? By recounting stories and reminiscing whenever you hear ‘your song’? And what about sharing it with other people and generations to come? That is the purpose of your wedding photography, so picking the right person to capture your day is essential to ensure an album that you’ll pore over throughout your days as a married couple. You’ll undoubtedly already have an idea of your photography requirements and style preferences, but if in doubt, dive into as many different sources of inspiration as possible. Our online directory (wedmagazine. co.uk/directory) along with the plethora

Hannah Wilde Photography

of photography features, fashion shoots and real weddings in these pages and our website are a fabulous start, while visual

Hannah Wilde Photography

platforms such as Pinterest and Instagram are other ways to introduce yourself to the variety and to see what you’re most drawn to. You’ll soon notice that you lean toward a particular style that’ll help with your final selection.

Thomas Frost Photography

Steer yourself in the right direction by asking yourselves a few pertinent questions. Do you prefer posed, styled shots or natural, reportage-style images?

Hannah Wilde Photography

Is landscape an important factor in your day that you’d like captured or are you looking more for traditional family portraiture? Will the type of photography match the type of wedding you’re planning? For example, if you’re opting for an elopement, it’ll be a case of just the two of you and your photographer, while an extended festival-style wedding at a sprawling, multi-setting venue might require a pair of professional photographers to cover every angle. “Will the edit last the test of time?” asks photographer Tom Frost (thomasfrostphotography.com) on considering how your tastes and photographic trends might change in the future. By being too fashionable now, you run the risk of dating or disliking your images in decades to come. “I have couples who really want large landscapes with them just as dots in it. I always aim to give my couples a selection and say to them that I want to create stylish images that they will want to put on their wall and images that they will want to have on their bedside table: intimate romantic ones that are private and just for them…” he explains by way of Hannah Wilde Photography

In short, how does your vision compare with your photographer’s, and what will they realistically be able to achieve based on the setting, season, style of wedding and your expectations? Once you’ve transformed your wishes into a checklist, it’s time to start contacting possible candidates. Firstly, ask if they’re available on your date – it’ll save time and disappointment if you have a protracted conversation in which you click before discovering they are already booked. “Ask to see some full galleries to get a feel for how the photographer works throughout the day at different weddings, and think about whether you can see

If you’re still not sure, whittle it down to two or three and ask for a test session or engagement shoot. This will provide a great precursor on what to expect on the day and allow you to practise being in front of the lens while familiarising yourself with the person behind it. “You get to meet them in context, have a mini adventure together and get to know one another so on the big day it feels like a mate turning up!” explains Emma. “Don’t forget, they will be interacting with your guests too, so you want someone who will be a positive impact on the day. I focus on putting couples at ease, having fun and making it relaxed,” says Tom. “When shooting, I always get the couple to focus on each other and the environment, absorbing the sound, sights and moments,” he reveals of a few of

Hannah Wilde Photography

the techniques employed to help couples unwind and be themselves in front of the camera. For couples feeling shy or even anxious about being photographed, there are other ways to increase your confidence and help make it an enjoyable experience. It seems simple enough, but try to ensure that you look like you on your wedding day. Consider everything from the dress, suit, shoes, jewellery, flowers and make-up in order to feel fully comfortable in your own skin and what adorns it. For example, if you never wear make-up, opt for a minimal and pared-back look, while if you always struggle to walk in heels, pick a pair of flats instead. Don’t swamp your petite frame with a bulbous ballgown that you can barely move in, or choose a slinky, skin-baring sheath if it means you’ll fret about potential wardrobe malfunctions all day. Chances are

Verity Westcott Photography

the camera will capture your sense of dislocation, so work at being the most naturally ‘wedified’ you that you can be. You could even get a friend to do a mock shoot with you in your complete outfit to see how it feels and looks on film to give yourself time to change it if necessary before the day. Another factor in the decision-making process, as with all else, is budget. “You get what you pay for,” cautions Tom. “More than 10 years ago when I started, it used to cost a few hundred for shooting a wedding, but the skills and experience and gear that I bring to the day have pushed the price up,” he says while highlighting the value of the time, expertise, equipment and knowledge that you’ll be paying your photographer for. “It’s one day that can’t be redone, so do it right!” he warns. Think of it as an investment for a lifetime of gorgeous pictures that you and your loved ones can always treasure.

Thomas Frost Photography

The final thing to consider is the particulars, and whether your photographer offers them. Most will travel and tailor their packages to suit your specific requirements, but if you know you want something that they can’t or won’t provide, then you’ll have to look elsewhere. Think about the time frame – how long and at which points of the day will you want them present for?

Ceremony only, or the entire weekend from the rehearsal dinner through to the post-nuptials? “It could be an additional factor like

experience at a venue or video package or drone being included,” says Tom. “I love doing video for big or small weddings; the times have moved on and now more photographers can capture both. This might play a part in your decision-making.” Once you’ve made your choice, relax and focus on relishing your day. This will allow your photographer to do the same while blending into the background in order to create the best and most ‘you’ photo album possible. “My top tip is trust your photographer and just go and have the best time of your life; happy, relaxed people always look good on camera and the emotions translate wonderfully,” reassures Emma.

The 200-year-old Cornish granite Linhay Barn, with its oak floors, whitewashed walls and cosy bar, is an atmospheric space for feasting and partying, while the cobbled courtyard is just the spot for gathering in the sunshine. QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR WEDDING VENUE

Polurrian on the Lizard

Before you fall for the first venue you visit, get clued up on the essential questions Choosing your wedding venue is a huge decision, and one from which many of your other decisions will follow. It’s oh-so easy to set your heart on the first country pile you visit but, before you make a decision, consider these key questions from wedding planner, Jenny Granlund of Jenny Wren Weddings & Events (jennywrens.com). Then go ahead and make that all-important booking – safe in the knowledge that you’re prepped on the party-planning essentials.

• • • • • • •

What is the capacity for a ceremony and reception?

• •

Are there any break-out rooms away from the party for older guests or babies?

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Is furniture provided?

Does the venue have a ceremony licence? What ceremony locations are there, both inside and outside? Is the venue exclusive use? What is their availability like? What is included in the price? Look at the rooms and discuss whether room turnarounds will need to take place (for example, if the dinner is in the same room as the ceremony). If so, who will take care of this? Will there be a wedding coordinator on-site on the wedding day? What will they be taking care of? Is tableware provided? Can you bring in your own suppliers and catering company? Are toilets provided? What time do the licenses for music and alcohol run until? Are there restrictions concerning music? Is there the option to provide your own alcohol? Do they charge corkage? What day and time can you have access from? Is there accommodation on-site or close by? Do they allow fireworks? Do they allow confetti? Do they allow firepits? Are there dos and don’ts concerning decoration? What time does the hire end? Who does the clean up afterwards? Who takes away the recycling and rubbish?

SMALL WEDDINGS OF DREAMS

Morgan and Andy ventured to Frieda and the Moon for an elopement in the Cornish countryside Why did you choose to have an intimate wedding? “We wanted something that was purely us, and an intimate elopement wedding with only a few friends sounded just perfect! We even brought our dog Rogue along with us all the way from West Yorkshire.” What was it about getting married in Cornwall that appealed to you? you were in “The landscape is just stunning – you’d have absolutely no idea you were England! It was our version of a destination wedding without the stress of travelling abroad with everything we needed. It was also far enough away to justify a smaller guest list.” Tell us how the day panned out. “It was a slow, quiet morning. We were far too relaxed for what was meant to be happening that afternoon! The ceremony was held outside The Studio at Frieda and the Moon under a flowery archway. We were right there in the elements, and it was perfect. We were told it would go by in a flash, and it did. Luckily for us, this wasn't the end of our day. We waited until twilight when the sun was at the horizon and made our way into the woods with Rogue and our friends. We met our celebrant, Rebecca Morris, in what is called The Hornbeam Circle, a little stone-tiered shrine of sorts, surrounded by candles, lights and trinkets. We exchanged our personal vows and

“Eloping with our dog and closest friends was the best decision we ever could have made. The stars aligned for us that day and every day since”

tied the knot, literally, with a handfasting ceremony. It was at that point when we complete.” truly felt married and complete.” for the details? What did you do for the “We kept our outfit choices a secret so we both had no idea what the other would be wearing. Morgan wore a celestial dress and I wore a suit with a matching pair of Converse. Morgan even slipped into some leopard print Vans for an adventure photoshoot. Comfort was everything for us. Despite our vague ideas of what we liked, Babs at Frieda and the Moon happily went away and provided us with buttonholes and bouquets which were perfect! We ordered our ‘cake’ from 42nd East Bakehouse in Leeds which was actually a giant cookie pie. We were able to customise it to our sweet treat preferences which was amazing.” Does one particular moment stand out to you? “We were chatting to Verity about how funny it is when dogs ruin perfect wedding photos by doing their business and not an hour after that conversation Rogue proceeded to do just that in the aisle of our legal ceremony. It was hilarious! It was just as our registrar was giving special thanks to Rogue for coming along too – perfect timing and a memory we can all look back on and laugh at. Another was a moment of realisation. Our stone-faced best friend Jordan doesn't cry or show his emotions very much. As we were approaching The Hornbeam Circle and the lights brightened, Jordan said, “This is actually quite romantic”. I can't explain that feeling, but Morgan and I caught glances as we held back our tears. Not long into the ceremony, we got to say our vows and I could see Jordan sniffling away over Morgan’s shoulder. Everyone was connected that day – it was beautiful.” What advice would you give to other couples considering an elopement or intimate wedding? “If you want to escape the assumed tradition and create your own without expectation or pressure from friends and family – eloping is the way to go! You get to choose exactly what you do, who you invite (if anybody) and how much to spend. Eloping together with our dog Rogue and four of our closest friends was by far the best decision we ever could have made. The stars aligned for us that since.” day and every day since.” Photography Verity Westcott veritywestcottphotography.com Venue Frieda and the Moon friedaandthemoon.co.uk

Alaa and Sam held a wildly beautiful handfasting on the edge of Tintagel Why did you choose to have an intimate wedding? “We wanted to have a simple wedding with just a handful of special guests to witness the ceremony. We didn’t want the restrictions of a traditional wedding and the stress of planning a large event. We also wanted our wedding to be outside in nature. An intimate wedding allowed us to be spontaneous and truly enjoy every moment of the day!” What was it about getting married in Cornwall that

“An intimate wedding allowed us to be spontaneous and truly enjoy every moment of the day!”

appealed to you? “Our family are from Cornwall and we also loved the idea of enjoying the landscape and beautiful beaches, especially in the summer.” Tell us how the day panned out. “Our wedding day was perfect! Having a small number of guests meant the planning went smoothly. We had a ceremony outside a yurt in a field filled with wild flowers. We then went to Trebarwith Strand beach for photos followed by lunch at the Mill House Inn with our guests.” What did you do for the details? “We wanted to source everything as locally as possible. Our cake, flowers and food came from local businesses in Cornwall.” Does one particular moment stand out to you? “It’s difficult to specify a particular moment because the whole day was special! However, one moment that does stand out was when our celebrant read a poem during the handfasting. The words were very touching, and the cord was handmade by Sam’s mum.” What advice would you give to other couples considering an elopement or intimate wedding? “Invest in a talented photographer! Keep it small and simple and if you are having the wedding outside, have a plan B in case the weather takes a turn for the worse – we were lucky!” Photography Hannah Wilde hannah-wilde.com

“Our wedding really symbolised what Jon and I are about as a couple.”

Emily and Jon married amidst the woodland and waterfalls of St Nectan’s Glen Why did you choose to have an intimate wedding? “Having been forced to cancel our overseas wedding a few times, we decided to postpone the big celebration until 2023 and focus on what’s important: starting the next chapter of our lives together. We chose an elopement style wedding with seven guests. It was very romantic and we were so happy that we were finally able to take this next step together. A small wedding allowed us to focus on what’s important and to be more creative with the planning.” What was it about getting married at St Nectan’s Glen that appealed to you? “St Nectan’s Glen is revered as a sacred place, where numerous ribbons, crystals, photographs, inscriptions, prayers and other devotions adorn the foliage and rock walls near the waterfall. It is a place of mystical and spiritual natural beauty, and the energy is incredible! We are both deeply spiritual people and being in nature was important to us – our wedding coincidentally fell on the summer solstice weekend so it was all divinely timed for our sacred union. We stayed on-site in an amazing cottage. The team decorated the arbour where we married with natural finds from the woodland, made us a vegan cake for our arrival and decorated the cottage with wild flowers from the glen. They also served us an incredible vegan breakfast the morning after the wedding overlooking the trees – it all felt like something out of a fairy tale.” Tell us how the day panned out. “We went into the waters the morning of the wedding as we felt that it would be a great way to initiate ourselves. I had offerings of roses to symbolise love and devotion which I offered to the glen to say thanks and to bring positivity for our marriage together. We had a little stone made with our wedding details which I hid in the rocks - we will try to find it again in years to come. After the ceremony in the arbour, we enjoyed canapés with champagne and cake. In the evening we went to the amazing Michelin-starred restaurant Outlaw’s. As we only had a few guests we had the budget for a super nice meal – we are massive foodies so this was important. It was wonderful spending the day with just a few people – there was no stress, the whole experience was just very enjoyable.” What did you for the details? “I wore a dress by Needle and Thread, a crown by Amore Headwear, earrings by Vivienne Westwood and a bespoke leather jacket. Jon wore a tailored Moss Bros suit with Gucci shoes and a Gucci belt. I carried an oversized bouquet from Flowers by Lucy. She also provided the roses for the offering, bows for my brother’s dogs and the dried flower buttonholes. The vegan cake from Flavourtown Bakery was spectacular – perfectly in line with our celestial theme.” Does one particular moment stand out to you? “Walking into the arbour and seeing Jon cry made me feel super emotional. We also loved having photos taken in the waterfalls with our wonderful photographer Grace.” What advice would you give to other couples considering an elopement or intimate wedding? “Enjoy it! You don’t need to think about anyone else and you can be as ‘out there’ and creative as you like. I loved our wedding because it really symbolised what Jon and I are about as a couple. The whole experience was chilled and enjoyable, and just naturally fell into place.” Photography Grace Elizabeth grace-elizabeth.co.uk Venue St Nectan’s Glen st-nectansglen.co.uk

EVERLASTING LOVE

Beth and Ben’s beach party was a dream fusion of boho styling, fabulous flavours and memorable music “We met at university in Manchester living in the same halls,” says Beth of her and Ben’s romantic beginnings. “From meeting in the first couple of weeks, it grew from there; we have a brilliant friendship group because of it and they actually made up our bridal party!” During a visit to Rock, Ben – with the help of the couple’s cockapoo, Ivor – dug into the sand to unveil a wooden box he had made for Beth while they were at university. “Inside was my lovely ring and he popped the question there on the beach,” reveals Beth. “I had always said I wouldn’t want people around as I am awkward to say the least, so I was grateful it was just us and the sea there to see it!” Selecting nearby St Michael’s Church in Porthilly for their wedding ceremony, the newly-weds then returned to the beach of their engagement for celebratory drinks and photos before relocating with the rest of the congregation to Porthilly Farm for a gorgeous tipi reception. “I have always loved everything boho and wanted everything to look very natural and relaxed, and to be in keeping with where we were, so that really was the theme: beach and boho,” explains Beth whose Rue de Seine gown was the ultimate in beautiful boho style. “The flowers were Cornish hedgerow inspired so nothing groomed or perfect – just natural and lovely.” Pitching in to help further personalise the day, friends and family ensured plenty of character was present throughout the details. Beth’s cousin baked the cake along with a table packed with tray bakes, cookies and biscuits, while her godmother made 40 metres of bunting that adorned the tipi. In addition, Beth and Ben made their own save the dates, while the invitations featured a beautiful map illustration of Rock drawn by Ben’s brother. At the farm, Cornish-themed canapés inclduing pixie pasties, and cocktails from mobile Airstream bar, The Buffalo (“the best cocktail menu I have ever worked through!”), were devoured ahead of the wedding breakfast. Roast chicken, risotto and a trio of desserts fuelled guests for the two-stage soundtrack that comprised a live performance from The Stowes followed by a set by “disco funk throwback legend” and friend, Nick Gordon Brown. It was a day brimming with brilliant memories, but Beth and Ben cite their first dance to Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Songbird’ as one of their favourite moments. “Dancing and feeling joy with all the people we love around us after the past two years was truly overwhelming,” adds Beth. “Nick closed his set with ‘Everlasting Love’ and it was just brilliant! I don’t think the song has been out of my head since!” And as for the number one task that should be on every couple’s planning schedule? “Make lists to break everything down,” says Beth. “It seems like an almighty task at first but when you break it down you can do it little by little. And give yourself time,” she implores. “Don’t rush – it is only one day so you want to enjoy as much of the planning as you can!” And finally – the most important advice of all. “Remember it’s about you getting married so don’t get caught up worrying about pleasing other people; everyone will be happy for you no matter what, so just enjoy it.”

VIVA ITALIA

Intimate, personal and romantic were the keynotes of Emily and Josh’s Italian-inspired wedding in the rural heart of the county “Josh and I lived together for a year at university thanks to a friend bringing our two groups together, and were friends for a few years,” says Emily. “Our mutual friend was also the reason I decided to move to Cornwall for the summer a couple of years later. I decided to stay in Cornwall long-term and, shortly after, Josh and I started seeing each other.” The couple were on holiday in Italy when they became engaged on the roof terrace of their holiday apartment overlooking the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. “Two of our best friends were also on the trip with us and it made it all the more special,” reflects Josh. It was this event that inspired the theme of their wedding at Trevenna, which they chose for a myriad of reasons. “Though it’s the grounds at Trevenna that make the setting so special, we wanted a venue that would offer a beautiful indoor space in case the weather forced the ceremony to take place inside, and Trevenna offered that,” explains Josh. The colour scheme was a reflection of their loved-up time together in Italy, specifically a day they spent in Positano. “The muted tones of peach, pink and white found in the flowers and bridesmaids’ dresses were inspired by all the colours of the buildings there,” says Emily. “Pairing them with lots of natural foliage such as olive leaves and eucalyptus was inspired by our time exploring the countryside around Florence.” The floristry was one of the most evocative aspects of the day, with Emily’s stunning bouquet of Juliet David Austin roses, white ranunculus, peonies and mixed country foliage paired with beautiful buttonholes of delicate peach lisianthus, ranunculus, white veronica and eucalyptus cinerea wrapped in rustic twine. The decor featured many of the same florals, in addition to ivy trails for the arbour, hanging ladder, staircase and trestle tables, while olive wreaths adorned the back of the couple’s chairs to eye-catching effect. As far as moments go, it was the ceremony from start to finish that clinches it as the couple’s most treasured part of their day. “We asked Josh’s sister to do a reading – she chose an extract from ‘Captain Corelli’s Mandolin’, top and tailed in a very funny and heartfelt way that made it so personal and special to us,” smiles Emily. “Everything – from walking down the aisle with my dad, Josh and I seeing each other for the first time, saying our vows, having our mums as our witnesses, and having our first kiss as husband and wife – was amazing.” The laid-back and luxe affair continued with a feast including Caesar salad chicken, Cornish crab, ricotta and chive filo tart, slow-roasted beef brisket, and pan-fried sea bass … washed down with raspberry mojitos, Cornish gin and elderflower, and Camel Valley bubbly! Looking back, it was all the details along with a fortuitous last-minute date change that made the day, allowing them to increase restricted guest numbers from 15 to 30 – all of whom were able to stay on-site. “Though we couldn’t have everyone we loved there, it was intimate and meant everyone at the wedding could stay for both the Friday and Saturday night. No one wanted to leave when it was all over!” says Josh. “Get your core suppliers and venue booked in early!” the couple advise. “This takes so much stress out of the organisation as you’ll realise you’ve still got loads to do in the weeks (and days!) before the wedding. Also, invest in a good photographer,” they urge. “You just want to relive the day as much as possible afterwards, so having beautiful photos that capture the natural moments is everything.”

SPIRIT OF THE SEA

Mel and Dez hosted a wedding bursting with colour, fun and dancing at the water’s edge Mel and Dez met and married by the water, first laying eyes on each other during a sailing race before selecting one of north Cornwall’s most lusted-after coastal locales to tie the knot. “We both love the sea, so we knew we had to get married beside it,” says Mel. Dez proposed to Mel on Christmas morning, picking a unique way to pop the question. “He made me a cup of tea in a mug he’d had made with ‘Will you marry me?’ on it!” laughs Mel. “The kids were in the middle of opening their stockings, it was really early in the morning – it was chaos!” When it came to their venue, it was love at first sight for the couple, with Lusty Glaze providing the perfect space for their sand-between-the-toes shindig. “We fell in love with it as soon as we saw it, for both how stunning it is and the laid-back vibe; it’s very us,” explains Mel. “I’m the impulsive one so Dez had given me strict instructions not to book it straight away, as it was the first venue we’d seen. But as soon as our meeting had finished, he was the one saying: ‘What date shall we book it for?’” “Colourful, fun and relaxed” were the keynotes of the day, which was designed to be as uplifting and fun as possible. “We made that decision before Covid as both of us don’t like formality,” says Mel. “And colourful seemed even more appropriate after Covid.” Wild flowers were key to achieving the look of the day, and were all grown locally. “It was really important to us to use local suppliers – they were all amazing,” adds Mel. In keeping with their personalised and colourful wedding, the place cards were all written in rainbow shades by Mel and Dez’s six-year-old daughter, while the cake was another idiosyncratic feature. “Dez wanted a custard slice wedding cake!” says Mel. “We even managed to cut it without it splatting! All the guests said how delicious it was and how nice it was to have something different.” The day began in laid-back style with family and friends dropping in during the preparations to share fizz with Mel. Guests arrived for al fresco drinks before the beach ceremony, after which they continued to savour their surrounds with cocktails, games and swimming in the sea ahead of a delicious barbecue. “It was great to see people who didn’t know each other having fun together on the beach,” reminisces Mel. “A group of our guests bought us a huge blow-up lobster and fish, and all the kids played in the sea on those!” The Stowes kicked off the entertainment with their distinctive blend of Celtic folk music and sea shanties that reflected the tone of the day, with guests refuelling with a supper of fish and chips between sets. “When the band started playing, it was a real highlight,” reveals Mel. “The sun had just started going down and the light was amazing. We didn’t have a first dance, but the first song we asked them to play was ‘What Shall We Do with the Drunken Sailor?’ as we’re both sailors and like the odd drink! We started dancing and many of our friends joined in, and the dancing didn’t stop until the sun went down. We have so many good photos and memories from this part of the day!” The weather proved another highlight. “We had been really worried about it raining – in fact we’d told all our guests to pack for a ‘wet Glastonbury’ as we were still under Covid restrictions and decided the party would be outside, whatever the weather!” explains Mel. “As it was, the weather could not have been better, and it poured down the day before and day after.” Mel also offers some indispensable planning advice to other couples. “Don’t hold back on the personal touches that make your day yours,” she urges. “If you want a custard slice wedding cake – have one! If you want to dance to ‘Drunken Sailor’ – do!”

MOUNTAIN HIGH

Emma and Jamie’s dreamily relaxed wedding was a medley of bright colours, festival-chic décor and dreamcatchers fluttering in the Cornish breeze Manchester’s greyhound racecourse was where Emma first laid eyes on Jamie, though it wasn’t him that her friends had initially hoped she would fall for. “They were trying to set me up with another guy but Jamie caught my eye and helped me learn how to place bets on the races!” smiles Emma. The couple got engaged on Mount Batur while they were on their second trip to Bali together during an early 30th birthday celebration for Emma. “We took a trek up the mountain, which is actually an active volcano, starting at 2am to get to the top for sunrise,” recalls Emma. “Our guide found us a nice quiet bench where they gave us tea and some breakfast, then Jamie nudged me, opened up the ring box and said ‘What do you think? Want to marry me then?’ And also apologised for it taking so long (eight years!). It was worth the wait!” It was Emma’s mum who discovered Tregoose Farmhouse and Barns for their venue, which ticked all their wedding day prerequisites. “We wanted a small wedding in that area of Cornwall, as this is where my mum’s family is originally from and we holiday there every year,” explains Emma. “We could find all our own suppliers and decorate it however we wished, and we also got to spend five days there including the big day, which made a lovely break away with family and friends.” Armed with a ‘boho-rustic’ vision, Emma and Jamie designed the event from an eclectic mix of influences. “I loved the idea of dreamcatchers, dried flowers and relaxed vibes with a festival feel!” says Emma. The scene was made all the more personal with the help of family and friends, which included Emma’s sister making the cake and Jamie’s illustrator sister handmaking the pretty place names and menu cards. After the al fresco ceremony, guests enjoyed bubbly in the sunshine before settling in the tipi for the wedding breakfast. The decadent feast included pan-fried scallops, spiced confit duck, lamb rump and seasonal white fish rounded off with passion fruit and white chocolate cheesecake, chocolate brownie, mini pavlova and lemon posset. With appetites supremely sated, the rest of the day’s entertainment treated guests to lawn games, the cutting of the cake, the first dance and an uptempo party performance by live band, Ocean Rain, whose earlier acoustic set had established the perfect swoon-worthy soundtrack. “Jamie is prone to getting bitten by bugs and reacts very badly,” says Emma regarding an unforgettable moment of the day. “In the weeks running up to the wedding he was trying not to get bitten, but the day before, when we were decorating the tipi, he got bitten on his leg. Throughout the wedding day, Jamie’s leg began to swell and get bigger, which meant he had to change into sliders as his foot could no longer fit in his brogues! Then the morning after he ended up in minor injuries as he couldn’t walk on it!” she regales. “Make a list!” says Emma as her first piece of planning advice. “I love a list! From the very beginning, it really helped me keep a track of everything we had to do, so we didn’t forget anything – even though you’ll tick things off then add about five more things!” she laughs. “Also just do a bit at a time – especially if you’re crafting your wedding decorations otherwise it can get a bit overwhelming. But other than that, just enjoy the chaos!”

A MARINER’S TALE

Lauren and Elliot’s wedding was an enchanting celebration of the coast and the country “Since our first date, we were pretty much inseparable,” recalls Lauren, who met Elliot online. “It was the most natural and easy relationship either of us had ever been in, and feels like this is how it had always been and always would be.” Elliot was working on a superyacht in the south of France when he popped the question to Lauren. “We were travelling from Cannes to St Tropez, sailing in the most beautiful azure water,” reminisces Lauren. “I was watching the classic sailing yachts racing when Elliot said he was going to get something, and as I looked up he was there on one knee next to me. We popped the champagne and were accompanied by a small pod of dolphins who showed up to play in the boat’s wake just as it all happened!” With its views across the yacht harbour and Roseland peninsula, Castaways on Mylor’s waterfront made the perfect setting for their “relaxed country romantic meets coastal” theme. Shades of blue, blush, peach and natural tones featured in much of the décor and floristry, which had a “romantic hedgerow” aesthetic including sweet avalanche roses, white freesias, pale pink astilbe, eucalyptus, ivy and trailing jasmine everywhere from the posies to the pew ends. “We wanted our wedding to reflect us as a couple, our love of the countryside and sea – with Elliot being an accomplished sailor and lifeboat man – with a bit of a relaxed Mediterranean feel to it,” explains Lauren. However when Covid struck, they were forced to delay for an entire year. “Choosing smaller, local suppliers made the process of postponing so much easier; we managed to rebook our whole wedding in less than five hours!” says Lauren. But with the pandemic still looming large the following year, the couple were prompted to postpone once again. “Although the rebooking went smoothly, the stress was unlike anything we have ever felt before,” admits Lauren. “This was the biggest day of our lives and right up until a few weeks before, we had no idea about how our day would go, how many people could attend or whether my mum – who lives in Cyprus – could get to the UK.” Yet adhering to the few restrictions that were in place at the time didn’t hamper the day in Lauren and Elliot’s eyes. “We were able to have everyone we wanted to be there in the end too,” says Lauren. “Our amazing day felt like Covid wasn’t even an issue!” Everything occurred without a hitch – including the newly-weds being treated to the crew members’ tradition of photos aboard the Falmouth Lifeboat followed by a journey on a Fleming 55 yacht. “As we left Port Pendennis Marina, there were people standing outside the Maritime Museum waving and clapping!” smiles Lauren. “And having that time just the two of us allowed us to take it all in and enjoy our first moments of being married.” After canapés and cocktails on the quay, guests tucked into a ‘Mediterranean-meetsGreek’ feast that included tapas-style sharing boards of tempura vegetables, roasted Mediterranean vegetables and halloumi, slow-cooked Moroccan lamb shoulder, roast butternut squash and a sumptuous trio of desserts. “To finally be able to hug and dance with our friends and family after so long, and to enjoy our day in exactly the way we had dreamed it would be – it was actually better than we could have imagined!” says Lauren of her highlight of their day. And she is replete with advice for other couples. “Have more music than you think you need for signing the register! We chose some uplifting Motown music and kept it as a surprise for our guests. And if you feel overwhelmed by too much choice, go back to what you loved right at the beginning. It’s what your heart was originally drawn to.”

GOLDEN TOUCH

It was a beach party extravaganza for Melissa and Ricky, who wed in style on the shores of Carbis Bay Brought together by their shared passion for dance music, Melissa and Ricky first met while attending music festival, We Are FSTVL. Ricky then proposed in the Alcázar Gardens during a surprise trip to Seville, setting the wheels in motion for their spectacular Cornish wedding by the sea. The dreamy beachfront venue of Carbis Bay Hotel & Estate adopted their gold palette. “This was inspired by the surname ‘Goldman’ I was taking, alongside splashes of agate and marble to fit in with the sea and beach,” explains Melissa, who also cites “bohemian style and ‘Ibiza meets Cornwall’” as the cornerstones of the couple’s wow-worthy wedding style. The glamorous tablescapes saw gold and white tasselled tablecloths dressed with wooden place names, marble-effect stationery, gold agate boxes and candles atop gold candleholders. Even the cake was crowned with gold macarons. Flanked by bridesmaids in boho-chic embellished dresses, Melissa wore a stunning, form-hugging gown for the ceremony in the Ocean Venue. Complete with a stirring harp soundtrack, the couple married before a floral moon arch bedecked with tropical leaves and a medley of peach, coral and deep purple blooms framing the white sands and blue seas beyond. Guests were then escorted onto the beach for the confetti throwing, toasts and a drinks reception complete with mini fish and chips, before relocating the short distance to the hotel’s new Orangery “with panoramic views of the ocean and skylight ceilings to indulge in the sea air”. Here, they tucked into the three-course wedding breakfast featuring the likes of baked shoulder of lamb, chicken supreme and halloumi-stuffed baked peppers. Sticky date pudding, and almond and pear slice provided the sweet endnote. “A saxophonist accompanied our wedding breakfast, which was an amazing way to create fun entertainment for guests having to be seated with Covid restrictions,” adds Melissa. The day then presented the couple with their favourite moment during the post-dinner ‘golden hour’, when they ventured onto the beach for photos and smoke grenades on the sand. “This was magical and made for so many amazing photos and memories that we will cherish forever,” says Melissa. It was back to the hotel for their first dance to Harry Style’s ‘Adore You’ ahead of an evening with their guests that included a supper of Cornish pasties, golden sparklers and dancing into the early hours. “The sparklers with all the guests were really special and was a great way of bringing everyone together,” reflects Melissa. “You can always over-plan the key wedding details,” she warns of the perils of obsessing over the minutiae. “But not everything goes to plan and things can change quickly on the day.” She maintains that the trick is to remain as flexible and positive as possible. “Keeping an open-minded approach and enjoying your special day with everyone around you is the most important of all.”

A RURAL ROMANCE

April and Neal threw a laid-back country wedding filled with dried flowers, natural colours and acoustic sounds “We actually met at a wedding!” laughs April when asked to recount her and Neal’s romantic tale. “I had worked at the venue for years and Neal had been sent there that day to temp because we were short-staffed! It wasn’t long before we found ourselves serving welcome drinks together to guests in a tipi surrounded by fairy lights and candles… all very romantic! The rest is history!” Their engagement took place during another romantic outing with “a surprise night away by the sea in Newquay. We went for a lovely meal followed by a walk on Fistral Beach just after the sun had set, and that’s where Neal got down on one knee and popped the question!” remembers April. “We both wanted a rustic venue and Trenderway has so much charm and character,” she explains of their venue choice. “The ceremony room is just magical and made me cry when we went to view it – that’s how we knew it was the one!” Trenderway’s welcoming warmth was an instant winner and allowed them exclusive use for the weekend. “Even though it was only just over an hour away from home, it also felt like a weekend away!” adds April. A natural palette of eucalyptus green, sage and neutral tones effortlessly blended the indoors with the venue’s idyllic surrounds. “We were inspired by Trenderway’s natural and earthy colours as well as the beautiful countryside,” says April. “I also loved the gorgeous green paint of the doors and windows. On the day everything just tied in so nicely!” Tapping into her creative side, April handmade much of the decor herself, including the place names, centrepieces, table numbers, seating plan and signage, which all beautifully reflected the rustic, nature-inspired aesthetic. The outfits were chosen to reflect the couple’s individual sense of style while also carrying the theme: April, in a gorgeous floral lace gown, was flanked by her bridesmaids in sage green. Meanwhile, Neal opted for a neutral linen suit that paired perfectly with his groomsmen’s matching trousers and tan braces. The decorations were a combination of the professional and personal, with florist Marisa of Flowers With M creating the bouquets and buttonholes, and April arranging various displays throughout the venue. “There was a bit of late night pampas foraging and drying out in the lead-up!” she says. Rain clouds greeted them on their wedding day, “but as soon as we stepped out of the ceremony room as husband and wife the sun was shining!” reflects April, who was then whisked off for photos while guests enjoyed canapés, fizz and acoustic music performed by a friend. “He has the most beautiful voice. It was the perfect vibe while people were mingling in the courtyard in the sunshine,” she says. Upon returning to the main barn for the wedding breakfast, April and Neal joined guests for a “fun and relaxed” rustic banquet that included mixed mezze sharing boards of seared beef carpaccio, Asian black bean chicken wings and loaded fries. Post-dinner, everyone gathered outdoors for blue skies, more music and garden games ahead of the evening reception featuring street food, a DJ set and a magical evening’s end. “When it got dark, we lit the firepit and had the marshmallow toasting station in full swing under the gorgeous twinkly lights that illuminated the courtyard. The day was super relaxed and was everything we had hoped for and more!” she reminisces. “We loved having a wander through the meadow and finding the big rustic swing!” reveals April as one of her and Neal’s fondest memories from the day. “We had a lot of fun down there with our photographer. It was honestly just the best day of our lives!”

Chilled vibe. Create smaller chill-out areas for people to enjoy but consider how to make them inviting and stunning, from Moroccan low-level lounges to a sunny seated area to make guests feel like they’re in the Balearics. Rebecca Be our guest. Consider the guest experience and in particular their journey. This might mean their literal journey – arranging exciting and unusual guest transportation – or think about the very first touchpoint by sending them a wow-worthy save the date or wedding invitation. Jessica

Rebel + Anchor

The Choons

And…action! Send a video email to invite guests to your big day. It can be fun to create as well as exciting to receive and watch – you can add full details of the location or even little teasers that you release via email over time. Rebecca Light it up. Carefully considered lighting can transform the whole feeling of a room. I usually recommend a lighting plan that considers the period of day the space will be in use, and makes maximum use of softer background lights, candles, uplighting and task lighting. You might even consider projection mapping onto the side of your venue. Jessica

Raise the bar. There are some amazing mobile bars available which are packed with wow factor. Take a look at the stunning airstream bars from The Buffalo (thebuffalo.co.uk), the rustic and boho bars from The Natural Hire Company (thenaturalhirecompany. co.uk) or the mobile cocktail bars from Artbars (artbars.co.uk) complete with live entertainment including elaborate dancers in a birdcage on top of the bar! Rebecca Green is the new black. Create an impressive setting for your guests by bringing the outside in and filling your venue with greenery from top to bottom, from olive trees to silver birch and citrus plants. Jessica Food glorious food. Think of the food you serve as an experience for guests – for example, canapés can be displayed in creative ways such as fun and beautifully

styled food stations rather than served traditionally. Dessert stations are another opportunity to create a fabulous focal point. Rebecca Venue va-va-voom. With new rules opening up a huge choice of ceremony locations at venues, think outside the box and move away from traditional backdrops – if your chosen venue has something out of the ordinary, like a cliff-top terrace or a woodland glade, hold your ceremony with a jaw-dropping view. Jessica Drag it out. I love a good drag artist and singer, there’s nothing more fun than getting the evening started with some comedy and awesome cheesy music to get people in the mood. Rebecca Drinks with a twist. For an evening bar with a difference, consider ice sculptures as part of a display, perhaps as part of a champagne tower, or even a vodka luge to really get the party started! Jessica Feeling good. If you want the drinks reception to be fun and interactive, consider booking mind readers or lookalikes to walk around. Rebecca Music to their ears. Go all out and hire multiple forms of music – greet your guests at the drinks reception with a steel band or a string quartet, serenade them with roving musicians during dinner, then let them dance the night away with bands and a DJ. You could even have a fireworks display with a live electric string quartet perform synchronised to the illuminations. Jessica Make a scene. Floral installations are amazing, but they don’t have to just be a mass of flowers. Create more of a scene by using interesting shapes, and a mix of dried and fresh flowers. Also think about placement: geometric backdrops work well against a beautiful sea view.
