Immortalise your love story with a stunning set of images courtesy of fine art wedding and portrait photographers, Gilbert Wedding Photography.
Married couple Simon and Kat are self-confessed “fans of nature, art, light and connection”, meaning that they’ll focus on the marvel of you and your wedding setting to create a beautiful and unique album that perfectly portrays your love. “We adore the magic, wonder and intensity of weddings and believe wholeheartedly in capturing all that makes your day your own; the bond you share as a couple, the time spent celebrating with friends and family, the energy of the dance floor – beautiful moments captured in time,” says Kat. Romance, luminosity and joy are the keynotes of their individual approach and style, which can be booked as part-day or full-day wedding coverage, with or without a photo album to cherish as a family heirloom for generations to come. All packages include a pre-wedding consultation, coverage by both Simon and Kat, a set of edited images, online gallery and comprehensive insurance (with extra services and products available), so you can relax and savour your day knowing that it’ll be beautifully captured. As Kat says of the privilege of photographing a couple’s wedding day: “Good photography has the ability to both capture this dance and slow it down, to freeze a moment and make time stand still. Long after the day itself has passed we can help you bring back every emotion, every feeling, as though you were reliving it.” gilbertweddingphotography.co.uk
COUNTRY ROMANCE Prepare to be enchanted by the tranquillity and far-reaching views across miles of rolling hills as soon as you turn down the private drive to Hawke Barn. The 16th century former threshing barn sits amidst 250 acres in mid-Devon, close to the picturesque hamlet of Stoodleigh, offering historic charm and stirring rural beauty in abundance. Freeformimages Photography
The recently renovated barn boasts high open-vaulted ceilings and contemporary full-height windows with heavy oak beams, exposed stonework and flagstone floors. Bathed in natural light, the timeless and natural aesthetic brings a blank canvas for you to make your mark on your special day. With the main doors flung open, you can enjoy the sheltered south-facing courtyard, perfect for welcome drinks or an al fresco first dance, while terraces and outdoor seating mean you and up to 60 guests can make the most of the scenic setting during the warmer months. Equally captivating in the depths of winter, the barn’s wood-burning stove creates a cosy space for candlelit feasting and festivities. With charm-filled stables on-site, you might bring your own pet or pony to be part of your celebrations and stabled in their own private courtyard. You might also choose to have a Devonian anvil blessing bespoke to Hawke Barn. When it’s time to rest your heads, take advantage of luxurious accommodation for the wedding party in the west wing of the farmhouse and space for 15 more in two 17th century barn conversions with quirky features and exposed beams as well as camping options. THE FAIRYTALE FACTOR Step into a picture-postcard scene courtesy of Bickleigh Castle’s sprawling country wedding venue. Located between Crediton and Tiverton, the exclusive estate is guaranteed to spoil your guests’ senses, from the 11th century castle complete with a 6th century chapel to the 65 acres of spellbinding greenery that present natural beauty at every turn. With the River Exe winding its way through the estate, expect picturesque tranquillity – along with the chance to fish or wander the riverside – as you take full advantage of this charm-packed setting and all it has to offer. There’s a cluster of Grade-II listed thatched cottages, allowing your guests to extend the celebrations and linger a while longer, enjoying tennis, croquet, archery, clay pigeon shooting or simply soaking up the sense of history and natural beauty. Whether you’re planning an intimate outdoor wedding or a large-scale ceremony in the great hall – which comfortably seats up to 120 guests – Bickleigh provides a versatile venue to make your own. Stage an outdoor ceremony under the gazebo by the river or host a winter wedding before a roaring fire in the great hall. Then it’s time to feast in five-star style in the breakfast room, banqueting hall or the bar and orangery, where you can dance the night away before a night in the Tudor bridal suite. Hire a marquee, organise a blessing in the chapel or escape for a small destination wedding at one of Devon’s most historic and magical locales. Whatever your dream wedding scenario, Bickleigh Castle’s enchanting surrounds and tailor-made packages will ensure it’s achieved to wow-worthy effect. bickleighcastle.com [Photography Timeless Weddings / Dress Pirouette Bridal / Hair Cindy Beddard / Make-up Kayleigh B]

MONOCHROME MAGIC
Black and white is a match made in heaven. Clean, crisp and eternally stylish, the colour combination works beautifully for weddings of all styles and, in this styled shoot, Gara Rock provides the luxe backdrop for an intimate modern wedding scene with a chic nod to the Golden Age of Glamour. Perched on the cliffs of South Devon, the stylish seaside retreat marries luxurious interiors and spa facilities with panoramic views across the ocean. “The venue has recently launched its ‘Secret Suite’ weddings, which are designed for six to 16 guests,” explains Phoebe Taylor of Clover & Fern, who coordinated and styled the shoot. “I built the shoot around the venue, attempting to capture the perfect balance between seaside escapism and contemporary style with a little bit of Hollywood glamour thrown in.” Bathed in natural light, the tablescape is an elegant vision of crisp white linens, tapered candles in brushed metal candlesticks and single stem blooms in clear vases. “I was really interested to play with a ‘white on white’ theme for the table styling, which I think is incredibly striking against the dark tones of the space,” says Phoebe. “I brought a slightly earthy feel to the set-up that really reflected the venue by asking the stationer to add hints of dark grey and olive green to the stationery suite.” Nods to Phoebe’s passion for sustainability carry throughout. “Sustainability is an important part of my business, so I was delighted when the florist said that she wanted to feature purely English florals. I also used dresses from a wedding dress rental company,” she explains. The bride and groom carry the timeless, minimalist style with a high fashion edge. The groom’s sharply cut suit and the plunging neckline of the bride’s gown bring a contemporary twist to a classic silhouette, while the bride’s soft finger waved hair and dark lip make a gorgeous nod to vintage glamour. Venturing to the sun-drenched outdoor pool and the endless stretch of blue skies and ocean beyond, the shoot takes a playful turn. The bride dons a little white dress with dramatic puffed sleeves accessorised with 1950s-style sunglasses as the couple sup on cocktails and savour a party to remember on the clifftops of South Devon.

Flanked by wildflower-filled meadows, The White Barn blends its agricultural heritage with a light, contemporary feel, the sweeping staircase, floor-to-ceiling bar and mezzanine floor adding to its beautiful wedding aesthetic. It is an airy space that you can truly put your stamp on – which the team of creatives certainly did in this styled shoot. Taking the Pantone colour of the year, Viva Magenta, as the starting point, the team incorporated varying shades of pink to add depth and dimension to the neutral background of the interior. The bright and beautiful palette is carried vividly in the wow-worthy floral arrangements: roses of varying pink and red tones are paired with delicate cherry blossoms, frilly lisianthus and carnations, pampas grass and eucalyptus leaves dyed a vivid purple hue. Touches of glamour are added via the gold-rimmed glass plate chargers, gold cutlery and pale pink glassware adorning the tablescapes. Tall candlesticks and bud vases in tones echoing the blooms add interest to the trestle tables, while church candles and large lanterns make a feature point throughout the venue. The stationery suite features a delicate cherry blossom design, and transparent place name cards finished with brightly coloured tassels sit atop pale pink napkins adorned with exotic orchid heads to create a dreamy place setting. The air of romance continues with the cake, the striking ombre effect of its sleek tiers created from buttercream, the berry hues enhanced by a cascade of flowers dotted with blueberries. From billowing sleeves and whimsical lace to floral embellishment, a stunning collection of gowns complete the chic and glamorous picture. Paired with a fashion-forward updo and natural, romantic make-up, the bridal look is finished with pearl and crystal hairpins and fabulous fuchsia shoes. Elegant, fresh and playful, the shoot combines the refined styling many couples hope to achieve with the unbridled joy of a wedding day.

From square necks and separates to back-baring gowns, we’ve got the lowdown on the trending design features gracing Devon’s boutiques words Hannah May It was House of Givenchy founder Hubert de Givenchy who once declared: “The dress must follow the body of a woman, not the body following the shape of the dress”. High/low plunging necklines Nothing spells seduction quite like a deep plunging neckline that exposes the décolletage and skims the bustline. Whether you’re in the market for a subtle, sweetheart version of the trend or a risqué J.Lo-style navel-deep cut, the skin-baring style remains very much en vogue. Cleavage-covering options such as nude lace and sheer panelling will make buxom brides feel more secure, while plummeting sharp V-necks smack of daring and oh-so sexy high fashion. Alternatively, regal styles remain another bridal mainstay, with high halters, mock necks and turtlenecks all lending an air of romantic sophistication. Lace, crochet, organza (especially with pleated detailing), dotted tulle and ruffles are all the rage, while illusion necklines, hand-sewn beading, sequins, long sleeves and botanical elements will all up the bridal modishness.

old-school Hollywood glamour and are going nowhere. Though side slits ooze sensuality and are ever popular amongst this year’s bridal collections, it’s the front slit that is currently making a move on the most-wanted list. Pick from wrap dresses, clingy crepe skirts, satin columns, silk Mikados and chiffon A-lines with a slit for the sultriest bridal style. And should you seek extra embellishment, feathers, bows, florals, sequins, scalloped lace and ribbons are just the fashion-forward ticket.

Square necks No doubt prompted by the modern minimalist movement that favours clean lines and sharp cuts, square necks are another gorgeous bridal staple. They might be simple, but they’re also incredibly striking. From regency styles to reimagined ‘90s-wear, the humble square neck is causing quite the sartorial stir. Go tailored with long sleeves paired with a fit-and-flare skirt, boho with lace and a fishtail skirt, vintage with a beaded fringe flapper dress or ubercontemporary with a square cut (boned) bodice atop a short skirt.

Low backs Since it’s your back that receives much of the all-eyes-on-you attention during your aisle walk and ceremony, why not make it the focus of your fashion choices? Backless, open and lowbacked styles are making bold waves on the runways for their unapologetic sexiness and haute couture edge. Part of their beauty is that they work with every type of dress design, from frothy fairytale frocks to slinky sheaths, high-necked A-lines and micro minis – making them both versatile and endlessly alluring. And the lower you go, the better, with ultra-low-cut backs skimming the base of the spine proving a particularly enticing option. Drapery, asymmetry, bow or tie detailing, keyholes and cowl and portrait backs are all making the cut. Maggie Sottero, Pirouette

Separates With the industry continuing to move away from fast fashion towards more sustainable alternatives, separates are a conscientious yet à la mode choice. Mix-andmatch styles can be reworked, reworn and recycled (and easily sourced secondhand), while also providing an individually created look. Pair an heirloom bodice with a statement ballgown skirt, a beaded lace crop top with flared trousers, simple silk camisole with ruffled mini skirt, or layer multiple pieces for a look loaded with personality. Wedding sets and two-pieces also tick the transformational-wear box, so you might want to combine a skirt, cape and veil for the ceremony before ditching all three for your party-ready sparkly jumpsuit reveal.

ENDURING LOVE
Nestled amongst the hills of South Devon, the versatile spaces and romantic grounds of Kingston Estate paint a picture-perfect backdrop for this styled shoot. From the breathtakingly beautiful Georgian mansion and rustic-luxe climes of the Linhay and Cowshed Barns to the the light-filled Dining Room with views across the rose and parterre gardens, the shoot takes in just some of the estate’s incredibly beautiful backdrops. “We opted for a modern sage, glass and silver look with a luxe finish,” explains Laura Parker of All Floral, who styled the shoot alongside Laura Louise Hall. “The ceremony focused on creating a beautiful ambience with the candlelit aisle and our large foliage and rose arrangements as the main feature in the barn.” A clean modern sage look carries into the reception space, allowing the natural beauty of the scene to shine through, the statement floral centrepieces bringing a sense of opulence echoed in the silver accents of the tabletops. Tapered and pillar candles in glass jars bring depth and texture as well as casting a soft glow over proceedings. “We also mixed centrepieces together with the foliage range and the glass candelabras to demonstrate that centrepieces can complement each other without matching,” explains Laura. Topped with lovingly crafted florals, the sleek tiered cake makes an elegant focal point styled with floating candles. “I’ve always believed the cake deserves much more attention than it sometimes gets!” says Laura. The glamorously styled setting makes the ideal canvas to showcase the Randy Fenoli collection from Plymouth bridal boutique, The Ivory Lounge. Each gown blends seductive silhouettes, gorgeous fabrics and exquisite embellishment. From the sheer back, intricate detailing and showstopping train of Dakota to the fit-and-flare silhouette, fine lace and tulle bows of Delilah, the sweeping staircase and light-filled halls make a dream pairing with these head-turning gowns. Meanwhile, the suit from Zebel Bespoke’s made to measure range combines a traditional shawl lapel, pleated shirt, black bow tie and lightly tailored trousers for a timelessly stylish look befitting the setting.

your finger and your journey to “I do” is well and truly underway. Amidst the bewildering list of tasks on your to-do list should be finding a wedding band that perfectly symbolises your union while complementing your engagement ring. This isn’t always an easy feat, particularly if your engagement ring features an unusual stone or distinctive cut. However, with a little time, effort and advice from the experts, you can be confident you’ll find the perfect pairing for maximum comfort, meaning and style while symbolising your love in the most unique and beautiful way. “When choosing a wedding ring to go next to your engagement ring, you’re looking

pair,” says Abigail Davies from Drakes (drakesjewellers.co.uk). “Just as important is the fit,” she continues. “The wedding band needs to be a great fit next to your engagement ring. Many styles of our engagement ring are created as ‘wedd fit’, meaning that the setting or centrepoint of the engagement ring sits a little higher on the band part, allowing a wedding ring to slot in neatly next to it and sit flush next to

around your engagement ring – from gentle waves to geometric shapes,” she says. “Going for a ring that is the same colour, shape and width as your engagement ring can give the illusion of them being one, or at least a very definitive set.” Of course, should you want your rings to stand out side by side, she suggests varying these elements. Abi has also observed the trend toward two distinct styles, such as asymmetric stone placement and eclectic pairings of different cuts and shapes of diamonds. “Just bear in mind things like position of claws on both the engagement and the wedding ring to ensure they aren’t an area of added wear,” she advises. “Typically, a harmonious pairing would be to reflect the same cut, shape and quality of gemstones in the wedding ring. So if you are the lucky owner of

a princess-cut solitaire, you can be confident that a wedding ring set with a row of smaller square-cut diamonds will work beautifully, while cluster and halo styles of engagement ring also work fantastically next to a diamond set wedding band,” she explains. “Our advice? Pay attention to those subtle details to ensure the best pairing, including claw style, number and placement, width of the channel and overall width and profile of the band.”
With Love Rose Photography
Jamila raises the issue of practicality by asking whether you’ll be wearing your engagement ring all the time, or whether your job or lifestyle may prohibit you from doing so. “Some professions mean you have to take claw-set rings off, for example. If so, consider how the wedding ring looks on its own,” she suggests. “You could add diamonds or gemstones to your wedding band that complement your engagement ring – or bring a pop of colour.”
5.
Finally, it might also be worth future-proofing your decisions. “If you are already planning the ultimate trilogy – an eternity ring too – remember not to go too wide on the wedding band so there’s comfortable room left on your finger,” advises Abi.

selection of spring blossom.” She does, however, express a word of warning. “Scented flowers can be a dream but can also be overpowering and produce considerable amounts of pollen really affecting those with allergies. dramatic and architectural the effect of using them would be.” “I have always placed scent as one the most important parts of growing flowers for my couples,” reveals Rebecca Stuart at The Garden Gate Flower Company (thegardengateflowercompany.co.uk). “Rather like a song you will hear on the radio that takes you back to fond memories, scent is a similar trigger. Often my couples will ask for flowers like sweet peas or roses as they remember them in their grandparents’ garden.” The beauty of using a florist who grows or sources locally grown flowers is that British blooms have so much scent. “In Cornwall, azaleas love our soil and their scent is incredible – visit any stately home that has a garden and you are bound to find them growing. I love to include them in my bridal party flowers as their shape and scent work well with ranunculus,” says Rebecca. Whatever time of year you plan to wed, you can bring scent from the garden into your floral arrangements. “Starting off the year, you will find the heady scent of the narcissi paper whites that in the depths of winter provide a glowing spotlight on any dark table. In early spring we see the introduction of flowering

branches. Statement arrangements can embrace larger blooms like magnolia and if you are lucky to find a daphne you will not be disappointed by her sweet scent, often overlooked due to her little flowers,” says Rebecca. “Once summer is upon us, the seasonal showstopper – the rose – takes centre stage for packing a punch in bridal bouquets,” she continues. “I grow a huge variety of roses but am always led by their scent. Be warned though – many roses on the market sadly no longer have a scent and are bred for their robust vase life.” And what about out-of-season weddings? “Autumn is where scent from the flowers starts to taper off. However, foliage like eucalyptus, flowering mint and myrtle are firm favourite ingredients for me,” she says. “My advice is to chat to your florist about what scent is available from seasonal flowers in the month you are getting married. It will become a lasting memory trigger when you smell your wedding flowers years John Hersey

Trevarno Organic Trevarno creates an assortment of skincare and soaps using the finest and most sustainable, skin-loving ingredients without so much as a hint of anything artificial. Start by adding a subtle floral fragrance to your wedding linens with its Organic Linen Water, which is made from pure distilled organic flower water and is available in either Rose Damascena or Lavender. Complement this with Organic Room Mist, which distils delicate top notes of pure essential oil followed by full-bodied middle notes and long-lasting base notes in a trio of heady formulations: Cornish Garden (jasmine, rose geranium, lemon verbena), Coastal (lime, sweet basil) and Botanical (lavender, rosemary, thyme). You might even wish to stock up on Organic Trevarno’s luxury hand wash (in Coastal or Cornish Garden), which will leave skin feeling soft and hydrated while scenting your cloakrooms and spoiling your guests’ senses even more. trevarnoskincare.co.uk
Carrière Frères Expressing its global commitment through eco-friendly products sourced as close to nature as possible, Carrière Frères is a formidable name within the world of French perfumery. Their heavenly scented creations come in the form of candles, diffusers and room sprays, but our favourite has to be the eye-catching botanical palets. The handmade 100% vegetable wax accessories contain a natural element such as sustainably harvested plants and woodchips. The mini pieces of hanging art will adorn your wedding space (or present as the most sensuous gift) while wafting their intoxicating fragrance, such as La Rose Aime Le Poivre palet that fuses Damascas rose buds and peppercorns for an invigorating floral bouquet. A summer celebration would provide the perfect excuse to scatter some Orange Blossom palets throughout your venue, while the Siracusa Lemon Botanical palet was made for an Indian summer affair. Then there’s the Siberian Pine and Winter Rose variety, which would lend itself perfectly to a yuletide celebration – or the fresh and woody notes of Cedar that will envelop any space and season with its sophisticated attar. carrierefreres.co.uk

NEUTRAL TERRITORY Stripped-back styling isn’t reserved for the reception – today’s grooms are joining the minimalist movement with their dress code, donning everything from head-to-toe white to understated greige slacks. Not only does a neutral colour scheme blend better with your bride, but it also allows you to revel in simple styling – or stand out with statement features and colour-pop accessories. Picture a pristine sand-coloured suit with an oversized boutonnière, snazzy braces and floral print shirt or a dove grey suit with a fancy shirt or detailed waistcoat. As well as a palette of white, cream and barely-there shades of grey and brown, the trend is toward relaxed tailoring and another top lust-have: linen. Keep it casual with a pair of loafers or sandals, or pair with some classic leather brogues.

MODERN ROMANCE
One of the many beauties of a tipi wedding is its versatility and, as this styled shoot illustrates, the striking Nordic structures can work for a range of design schemes. “This shoot started as an idea to show that you don’t have to go for full-on festival vibes or rustic style just because you’re getting married in a tipi in a field or garden,” explains stylist and coordinator Nikki Sherriff of Knots & Kisses. “Tipis can also have a beautiful, elegant feel and, as a stylist, that’s what I set out to prove. So it’s out with the rustic wooden tables and folding chairs and in with the elegant crossback chairs, fully dressed linen tablecloths and beautiful fringed napkins!” Nikki pairs a neutral palette of oatmeal, beige and camel with pops of bright pink and fuchsia. “Tipis always look amazing with a pop of colour against the canvas,” she says. The florals are key to creating the air of romance and elegance that carries throughout the shoot, and dreamy clusters of blooms in varying shades of pink and fuchsia make a stunning statement in the hanging floral installation – a striking focal point for the ceremony – and along the top table. A beautiful hanging cake with matching floral details completes the glamorous scene. The aesthetic continues with the bride and groom; the groom dons a relaxed, modern suit reflecting the neutrals of the chosen palette while the bride exudes a polished grace with structured details and drops of crystal jewellery and hairpins. Elegance is certainly achieved, and with it a sense of stylish sophistication.

One of the leading statement floral features is installations, hoops, as well as the burgeoning trend of dance floor installations. Others include architectural arrangements, staircase garlands, flower-covered cakes, dynamic aisles and tablescapes that play with a variety of colours, textures and heights. While layering your blooms, also explore the idea of arrangements in unusual or oftneglected spaces, along with using lesser-known blooms and natural elements – for example, mushrooms, which add a fabulously rustic and textural twist. Fusing a range of botanicals can create jaw-dropping displays with a maximalist feel, mashing styles and aesthetics that reflect wild natural spaces and provide bold and dramatic backdrops to boot. “Trees, plants and flowers can be used seamlessly together to create an incredible display, feeling like you are saying your vows in an English country garden or dining in a tropical jungle,” enthuses Hannah. “Royal and celebrity weddings alike have used plants and trees to create huge entrances and

“We’re seeing a big request for the ‘maximum’ with installations still proving popular in marquees and grand doorways,” notes Emma. “We have been designing some spectacular hanging installations using just a mix of greenery and adding lighting to ‘lift’ the design.” Experimenting with flowers, greenery, lighting and the Freeformimages Photography
range of available spaces – both inside and out – can all ensure showstopping floristry, whether it’s of the simplistic or standout persuasion. Paige Grace
And remember… there are no rules. Work with your venue, theme, budget and florist to create a look and feel that fits you and your vision, and you can’t go too far awry. You could even attempt to conflate the two trends: a dramatic floral archway to utter your vows beneath, then express

your more minimalist side with single-stem vases dotted throughout the reception space. Hannah Barnes Hannah Barnes
“Many of our weddings this year are seeing the style of single-variety flowers – but en masse, so I guess a mix of both!” observes Emma of the growing tendency toward merging the opposing aesthetics. The contrast alone could prove highly impactful; just make sure you engage the professional services of an experienced florist to help you strike the right stylistic chord.
Fuss Pots
Meanwhile, for those firmly rooted on the side of small and delicate floral designs, be assured that these can create a similarly stirring effect. “Minimalism is playing a part in bouquet designs with many brides moving away from the oversized style and opting for something more dainty,” reveals Emma of the popularity of petite posies. “And lots of single-stem vases with only roses or dahlias is proving very popular – often in a white colour palette, creating a very crisp, modern look.” Speaking of the all-important palette, this is something to discuss with your florist before settling on a scheme. Seasonality will play a role in what is available, as will your

overarching theme or dress code. “Colour trends seem to be going one of two ways too – minimal with just whites or full-on summer vibes with a mad mix of colours,” says Emma of the emerging tones. These currently include pinks, greens and jewel tones including ruby, emerald and turquoise, while bright, colour-pop shades are also flooding florists’ mood boards. Don’t forget to think about where and when you source your blooms. Many florists provide seasonal, home-grown flowers or source local or British blooms for greater sustainability, which remains one of the biggest buzzwords in floristry. Another advantage of the minimal movement is its environmental impact, as simpler designs can also be more earth-friendly. “I have used dried elements, local driftwood and high seasonal summer flowers found in your typical Devon or Cornwall garden to keep environmental impact to a minimum,” explains Hannah. “At a recent wedding, although stem count was kept to a minimum, we worked with the stunning landscape at Watermouth Cove and therefore the impact was certainly not lost. I find that more and more couples want to work with the surroundings on offer
Fuss Pots

and ‘borrow the landscape’, therefore enhancing their venue rather than trying to change it,” she adds. “This is a slowly growing trend that is based on rising costs of living as well as being more mindful of how one’s wedding will impact the environment.” Another way to achieve a stripped-back and more eco-friendly look is to style your spaces using plants and trees. “This gives real bang for your buck!” says Hannah. “They can fill spaces that would cost the earth in flowers and I love the simplistic and organic look they can achieve.” The desire for living arrangements like trees, potted palms and miniature herb gardens are the perfect solution to enhance the sensuous and sustainable aspects of your wedding, with the bonus that they can be gifted or taken home and planted as a lasting keepsake of your day.

And finally, florists and style forecasters are reporting another way to emphasise your chosen look beyond the use of the flowers: floral detailing. There’s a host of decorative elements through which your minimalist or maximalist vision can be accentuated, such as the table linens (think botanical embroideries and patterns), stationery (plant motifs, floral prints), candleholders and glassware (colour-matched to your blooms) and petalpretty ornamentation everywhere from the dinner plates to the flatware. The future of floristry also sees an emphasis on the vessels, especially with non-traditional pots and

SINGLE STEM FLORALS “I love the impact of lots of single stem florals. It creates such a simple and delicate yet striking tablescape!” says Sophie. “Small, simple single stem vases work the best for this look. Make the flowers the accent and perhaps dot them throughout the table or cluster them to create a unique ‘bouquet’.”

TEXTURES “I am obsessed with textures at the moment, whether it’s using fabrics, florals, your name cards or some interesting centrepieces,” says Sophie. “I just love a table set-up with different textures for example, you could intertwine two table runners which are different fabrics or add some dried florals into your flowers to elevate the look. As for your name cards, consider shells with the names written in calligraphy to add a sleek texture.”

BEAUTIFUL BLOOMS “So many weddings over the last few years have hung heavily on either lots of green foliage or the boho trend with arrangements of dried flowers. But I’m here to tell you flowers are back!” says Nikki. “Beautiful big floral bouquets and installations can make a huge impact at your wedding and add splashes of your favourite colours. When I bring on board a florist for my styling clients they are always super excited when I ask them to include some actual flowers!”
Styling Knots & Kisses / Photography Flo Brooks / Flowers Brompton Buds
“My key piece of advice for this trend - and something I try to do when I’m putting a styling plan together - is to maximise the impact of your florals. It’s easy to think that lots of flowers would be way out of your budget but by focusing on one or two large key installations rather than spreading the budget thinly over many areas, and thinking of ways of reusing your ceremony flowers later in the day, you can really make the most of those big florals.”

BOLD COLOUR PALETTES “We’ve seen a lot of playing safe when it comes to weddings over the past few years, whether that’s classic white and green foliage, or neutral boho with lots of pampas grass,” says Nikki. “It’s natural to feel like you don’t want your wedding to ‘date’ so you don’t take any risks with colour. But the following trends in interiors and fashion – such as colour blocking, bold pastels and retro

colours – are just as doable for weddings. However you style your wedding, it will always date to some extent, so why not have a bit of fun and reflect your personality a bit more!” she adds. “My key piece of advice when going for a bolder colour palette is layering,” continues Nikki. “Pick some base neutrals (anything from browns and caramels to black, white or even navy and dark green) and then add one, two or even three accent colours. This makes finding everything from bridesmaids’ dresses to ties and napkins so much easier as you haven’t restricted yourself to one single colour. And then have fun! Clashing colours are perfect for this look, so pair lilacs with orange, or burgundy with pink and mustard yellow as I’ve done in this ’70s disco look.”

POPS OF PINK “Weddings are bringing back colour and we’re loving pops of pink this year! Think jewel tones paired with shades of pink, dusky orange and metallic gold – a warm and welcoming colour palette but in a sophisticated way,” says Hazel. “We adore this romantic and versatile trend as it will look wonderful with as much or as little colour as you would like, making it the perfect palette for any venue or style. Boho, luxe, rustic or traditional, it can be adapted to suit your dream wedding and budget without compromising on style. It’s one of our favourites this year as it really doesn’t take much for it to look visually spectacular! We love styling this palette by adding pops of colour in different textures to create a soft summery look. Think tall candle holders, ruched table runners, silk napkins, luxe cutlery, charger plates and dried or fresh flowers that will fill the space and visually pop. For more of a winter solstice style, use touches of gold with accents of soft autumnal colours paired with lots of tea lights and candlesticks.”

Facilities Once you’ve confirmed your venue and date, it’s time to think about what goes in and around the marquee to make it a comfy, practical and stylish wedding space. You’ll need to consider a host of aspects, from the catering and furniture to the lighting, parking, access, heating and toilet hire. The size and type of your wedding may dictate these decisions. For example, if you’re hosting an intimate gathering with just a few guests, then you’ll likely World Inspired Tents

adopt a more minimalist approach to the minutiae. Alternatively, a grand, festival-style wedding may require a marquee village with multiple spaces for guests of all ages such as a crèche, quiet zone for older guests, bar area, snug and buffet or entertainment corner. Think about each of your guests individually and what their needs are. Will you require pathways from the car park or other venue spaces, and how will you ensure these are visible and easily negotiable at night (especially for younger and older guests)? Outside, you may wish to organise seating, firepits, drinks stations or even an al fresco dance floor, while inside the marquee itself you’ll need to consider décor. puts you and your audience at ease – it is scientifically recognised that laughter is ‘social bonding juice’. Self-deprecating humour is always a winner and has been proven to make audiences warm more to the speaker.
Forget Googled gags
Alan Law Photography
Warming up with a light-hearted, inclusive joke within the first 30 seconds
“If the joke could be used in someone else’s wedding speech, it shouldn’t be in yours,” advises Heidi. In fact, including even one Googled gag in your speech will take the shine off any of the original lines you’ve crafted and people may end up assuming you’ve stolen them all. If speaking at your own wedding, relish the fact that no one else knows about all the weird and wonderful quirks and habits of your relationship. Give an insight into your differences, your strange similarities and those regular debates you have about how to load the dishwasher.
as well as adding humour and depth. Remember the adage ‘It’s funny because it’s true’ and find the natural comedy lurking in your life that everyone will relate to.
Stories not adjectives
Alan Law Photography
Giving an insight into your everyday relationship shows your love in action
“Telling a good story helps sync your mind with your guests. When people hear an engaging story, they put themselves in your shoes and that process forms a deeper connection,” states Heidi. Collect a few of your favourite anecdotes to draw on, but remember, they don’t have to be long or extraordinary – they just need to reveal something special about the relationship. “We’re all born storytellers,” she says. “Don’t think you need to write War and Peace. The story of how you met can be just as entertaining, if not more, than any Tolstoy classic.”
Don’t begin with thank you boring them with a bunch of random thank yous. Think of those Oscar speeches. The thanks yous are really only interesting if you’re one of the people who’s being thanked! “They can feel a bit too predictable,” explains Heidi. “Win over your
Alan Law Photography
Every memorable speech begins by making the audience laugh, not by
audience first and then they’ll already have a smile on their faces before you get to the thank yous.”
Cut the clichés Whether you want to make people laugh or pay a heartfelt tribute to them, cut out the platitudes. Don’t thank your in-laws for ‘raising a wonderful person’, thank them for introducing you to Cat Chaos and South African Malbec. When it comes to your parents, think of the joy they’ve brought to your life, rather than specifically what they’ve contributed to the wedding. Thank them for tolerating your desire to be a grime artist and never refusing to sit in the passenger seat even after you’d failed your driving test for the third time.
Be romantic, not cheesy Despite what the rom coms suggest, you can be romantic without being cheesy. “To be genuinely romantic, you have to hunt down the things that make your partner them,” says Heidi. Leave out the obvious ‘soulmate’ and ‘best friend’ remarks and swap them for the traits and quirks that make your partner unique. “Your speech has the power to leave an imprint on people’s hearts. It’s one of the most life-affirming gifts you can give someone; a recognition of how important they are to you,” Heidi concludes. ‘Make sure you say more than just wedding waffle!”

VENUES GUIDE:
COUNTRY HOUSES & CASTLES Live out your very own fairytale in one of Devon’s elegant country houses or majestic castles
Pynes House Believed to be the inspiration for Jane Austen’s Barton Park in ‘Sense and Sensibility’, this elegant Georgian house provides the most breathtaking location for your very own love story. Set within 37 acres of parkland in the Exe Valley, the glorious gardens hint at the immaculate interiors, where you can marry in a choice of state rooms, all bathed in natural light and exquisitely styled. For dizzying romance, take your vows before the grand doors on the entrance steps with the majestic tree-lined avenue and gardens as your backdrop, before feasting and dancing the night away beneath the sparkling chandeliers of the Ballroom or, for larger affairs, in a marquee in the grounds. Romantic details such as the Romeo and Juliet-style balcony and the myrtle bush in the rose garden, which is believed to have grown from a clipping from Queen Victoria’s bridal bouquet, add to the dreaminess, while the beautiful bedrooms make for an incredibly special place to spend the night. Bickleigh Castle This is the place for a wedding rich in history. Beyond the stirring charm of the 11th century Norman castle, with its Great Hall complete with minstrels’ gallery and roaring log fire, there’s the 6th century chapel, Devon’s oldest building, and a truly enchanting setting for a blessing. The grounds are equally fairytale-worthy – the River Exe runs through the estate’s 1,000 acres of lush landscape and wooded valleys, while a cluster of cosy thatched cottage accommodation creates the feel of a wedding village. Kick-start the festivities with a Friday night feast; get married in the garden pavilion before dancing under the stars in the expansive grounds, with fireworks shimmering on the river. The next day, it’s all too easy to continue the festivities with a tasty brunch and fun on the croquet lawn and tennis court. bickleighcastle.com Total capacity: 120 Civil ceremonies licence: Yes Guest accommodation: for 40 in 18 bedrooms Dog-friendly: On request

CLARE AND CHRIS by ANGEL WADE
Sweet Music Classic styling, playful touches and lots of live music brought the good vibes to Clare and Chris’ wedding at Brickhouse Vineyard Clare, a singer-songwriter, met Chris, a music producer, while working together on a song. “We just clicked and I didn’t want it to end,” says Clare. Becoming friends at first, it took them five months to get together – and a magical proposal in Amsterdam followed in December 2019. “We were walking around the canals at night and they were all lit up – it was so beautiful. Chris got down on one knee but I thought he was falling over so went to pick him up,” she laughs. The picture-perfect climes of Brickhouse Vineyard made a dream location for their wedding. “It was honestly just the most stunning, secluded setting; we felt like we were in Tuscany!” says Clare. The couple drew on the venue when it came to styling their day. “We like classic designs so tried to make things as timeless as possible and not lean into trends,” she explains. A carnival of blooms in shades of white and cream with touches of pink decorated the tabletops, with a pampas grass cloud completing the striking scene. While Chris opted for a black tie ensemble, Clare dazzled in a beautiful lace Marchesa gown and glittering Jimmy Choo heels. Choosing to keep the ceremony as intimate as possible, the couple were joined by 30 guests in the day, before another 100 of their loved ones arrived to celebrate in the evening. “It felt like we got the best of both worlds,” she reflects. “The day itself felt like a big family Christmas and the evening was a great big party.” A relaxed ceremony set the tone for the day and made for Chris’ top moment. “I was feeling really nervous as the ceremony started, but when our niece was carried down the aisle throwing big fistfuls of confetti, it made me laugh and I felt like I could relax,” he says. The newlyweds were then ready to celebrate, dining on scallops, salmon and pork belly, with a Krispy Kreme doughnut tower that “didn’t go quite to plan!” says Clare. “It was an absolute hit but over time got a bit wonky so everyone was taking the doughnuts off it like a game of Jenga.” With no fewer than five different bands playing, the music brought a festival feel to the celebrations, leading to one of Clare’s favourite moments. “I asked the band to learn I Can’t Help Myself by Four Tops as a surprise for my dad. It’s an in-joke between the two of us and it led to an impromptu ‘Daddy-Daughter’ dance,” she says. “I liked that it was a surprise as there was no time for him to get nervous about having to dance with me in front of lots of people.” As well as music, there was another entertaining highlight from the day. “Our absolute best decision of the day was the bouncy castle!” laughs Clare. Hiring a white one “so it would still look bridal” the couple initially got it to keep their nieces and nephews entertained – but it proved a hit with all the adults! “We even had all the official family photos taken on it as everyone was so relaxed, and there isn’t a single forced smile in the photos!” says Clare. “The day felt like ‘us’. Very imperfect and silly.” The couple have some wise words for brides and grooms-to-be in the midst of organising their nuptials. “Don’t forget the bigger picture,” urges Clare. “Wedding planning is stressful but it is about the two of you. Don’t get too hung up on the idea of perfection; instead, prioritise fun. You will remember laughing more than you’ll remember how perfect a table setting was.”

ELLIE AND DOUG by INDIGO PERSPECTIVE PHOTOGRAPHY indigoperspective.com
The Great Outdoors Ellie and Doug’s sun-drenched tipi wedding at The Venue at Coxleigh was a colour-filled festival of fun Meeting on a night out in their hometown in 2014, an evening enjoying fish and chips overlooking Saunton Beach a few years later led to Doug proposing to Ellie. Choosing to wed in their beautiful local area, the couple decided on a ceremony at their village church, where Ellie’s grandparents and parents had also got married, before a tipi reception at The Venue at Coxleigh. “We knew we wanted it to be colourful and a festival-style party,” says Ellie, who reveals their DIY approach led to their family and friends pitching in. “My dad made blackberry vodka for favours, my sister did my make-up and the flowers in the church were put together by my gran and auntie. The flowers for the reception were all grown in Doug’s mum’s garden and displayed in rum bottles,” she says. The couple also made signs and log circles, which they decorated with candle holders and décor from charity shops for the tables, while Facebook led them to two peacock chairs and a bureau that they turned into a glitter bar. After a relaxed morning of preparations, the couple’s early afternoon ceremony proved to be a highlight. “Seeing each other for the first time in the church was my favourite moment,” says Ellie, who wore a gorgeous boho-chic dress and carried a bouquet of colourful blooms. After the vows had been exchanged, Doug drove his new wife to the picture-perfect venue in his brother’s Jaguar F-Type. Their festival-style reception was a fiesta of colour and homemade décor. “We made a hanging flower hoop for the ceiling and lots of multi-coloured tassel bunting, which was all over the venue,” says Ellie, who also made a macramé archway and table runners, while Doug made the wooden archway. Welcome drinks were served in the sun, with guests able to enjoy the great outdoors before a feast of pizzas, salads and desserts. “We had a vintage double-decker bus for the bar where guests could sit on the open top in the sun,” says Doug. Speeches followed, then Dew Barf played from a little hat tipi. “Guests loved dancing to them and even the older generation could enjoy it from inside the main tipi,” he says. As the evening guests arrived, everyone made a visit to the glitter bar before the couple’s first dance to Ben Howard’s Move Like You Want. “The Garden Club played for a couple of hours and nearly all our guests were on the dance floor,” says Doug. After a magical night of dancing and toasting marshmallows around the firepit, many guests slept in bell tents and continued the celebrations the next day with a barbecue. Ellie has some sage advice for those planning a similarly DIY affair. “Setting up takes much longer than you imagine so leave plenty of time, and get it all done in the days before, so you can relax,” she says. “Try not to let it stress you out too much – as long as your family and friends are there on the day, it will be perfect.”

“Make sure you have some moments alone with your partner to soak up all of the love and excitement!”

INDIA AND MATT by LAURA DEAN PHOTOGRAPHY lauradeanphotography.com
Among the Roses India and Matt’s sun-spilled celebrations featured eye-catching florals and a packed dance floor at Powderham Castle India and Matt first locked eyes in their local beer garden on a sunny August afternoon. “At the time I was living in York as a student and was down in Devon on holiday,” explains India. “One of our favourite bands was playing and we happened to be dancing on the same table! After the band had finished, we bonded over our love of music, life and Jägermeister!” On their fourth anniversary, Matt asked India to join him for a boat ride. “He said that we were going to be meeting some of our friends on a nearby beach,” she smiles. “When we were approaching the beach, Matt pointed out something on the cliff face: a beautiful sign reading ‘Will you marry me?’” After dropping to one knee, Matt sounded the horn on the boat and the couple’s friends let off celebratory fireworks from the beach. “We popped champagne and celebrated all night!” Powderham Castle provided the “many beautiful spaces to personalise the weekend”, explains India. “We loved the fact you could stay the night before the wedding to get set up and come together with friends and family.” The décor was kept simple and elegant with candles and an abundance of David Austin roses, garden roses, hydrangea, eucalyptus and gypsophila in shades of white, pale pink and green. Glorious sunshine meant their vision of an al fresco ceremony in the Rose Garden became a beautiful reality, providing India with a memory she’ll never forget. “Walking down the aisle to our singer Ollie Stephens’ version of Firestone by Kygo, the most crazy feelings and emotions going on – I’ve never felt anything like it. It was just phenomenal,” she reflects. A confetti throw was followed by drinks and canapés in the Rose Garden to a stripped-back dance soundtrack by Ollie. The wedding breakfast presented the likes of prawn cocktail, pulled pork scotch egg, seared sea bass fillet, breast of chicken and root vegetable galette. A ‘taste of the seaside trio’, comprising a beach ball of salted caramel chocolate mousse, sandcastle of strawberry and clotted cream panna cotta, and a mini cone of prosecco ice cream, rounded off the feast in style. Guests returned to the Rose Garden for drinks and garden games before the newlyweds ventured into the grounds for photos during the golden hour. “We had so much fun doing this and it was so lovely to have some quality time enjoying our day and each other,” she reminisces. Kick-starting the party with their first dance, a live band entertained guests all night, with a brief intermission for sparklers overlooking the deer park at sunset. Then came the time for one of India’s most memorable moments. “Changing dresses!” she exclaims. “I surprised everyone for the band’s second set by changing into the incredible short and sparkling Luv Dress by Milla Nova ready to party and dance the night away!” When asked for her top piece of advice, India insists: “Don’t try and talk to everyone – it’s your day. We spent all night on the dance floor and had the best time celebrating with our friends and family, we didn’t miss a thing!”

MEGAN AND LYDIA by CLARE KINCHIN PHOTOGRAPHY clarekinchinphotography.co.uk
Simply Perfect Megan and Lydia’s colourful elopement focused on the most beautiful of personalised details The pressure of completing their PhDs proved a bonding experience for Megan and Lydia. “We shared an office and shared many a tea break to get through the stress of writing a thesis!” laughs Megan. While Megan bought a ring during the middle of lockdown with the intention of proposing during the couple’s annual trip to Malham Cove, she “got too excited and impulsively whipped out the ring just after putting up our Christmas tree”, reveals Lydia. The couple began planning their intimate wedding at Ever After on the edge of Dartmoor. “It was the perfect venue for us as we were able to keep the day super small with some of our favourite people and every aspect could be personalised to us,” says Megan. Their shared vision for the flowers was the starting point for the day’s styling. “The only thing we knew we wanted was fun, rustic and colourful flowers (without being garish!), which influenced many of the decisions we had to make around colour,” explains Lydia. A gorgeous medley of peonies, hyacinths, hydrangeas and eucalyptus carried from the bouquets to the wedding arch. “We were absolutely over the moon with the outcome!” says Megan. When it came to the décor, the couple wanted to add as many personal touches as possible, including “personalised candles made with dates, our new surname and ‘in jokes’ between the two of us”, says Lydia. Shopping for their dresses separately, the couple kept their choices a surprise from each other until their ‘first look’. Emotions ran high during the ceremony, which included a moving Celtic poem, before the newlyweds took a stroll through the picturesque grounds for photos. “Lydia pulling out miniature bottles of prosecco from the (giant) pockets of her wedding dress during our photos was one of my favourite moments of the day!” laughs Megan. Celebrating with five loved ones, they sat down for a feast that was inspired by the food the couple feasted on the night of their engagement. “We had started roasting butternut squash for a squash and blue cheese risotto – but got engaged and ended up burning the squash!” says Lydia. “This was the inspiration for our butternut squash arancini with blue cheese dipping sauce. On the night we got engaged, instead of risotto, we ended up with Mexican takeaway, so this inspired our taco canapés!” Continuing the evening with a cheeseboard and a passionfruit martini cake – “We couldn’t decide between a fruity cake and a boozy cake!” – the couple’s unofficial maid of honour started a round of impromptu speeches, which made everyone cry. Reflecting on their day, the couple recommend booking a venue that “can recommend an excellent team of wedding vendors,” says Megan. “While we were free to find our own suppliers, the venue was able to suggest some wonderful creatives who they had worked with previously. Seeing lots of pictures and accounts of their great work while knowing we could tailor everything to our preferences really took the pressure off!”

CHARLOTTE AND JAMIE by FRECKLE PHOTOGRAPHY frecklephotography.co.uk
Love in Bloom Marrying in the autumn on the edge of Dartmoor, Charlotte and Jamie filled their wedding with flowers and joyful moments Meeting and becoming close at university, Charlotte and Jamie were “best friends who fell in love”. A romantic and completely unexpected proposal during a windswept coastal staycation in North Cornwall over barbecued steak and scallops led to the couple planning their wedding at Hotel Endsleigh. The picturesque venue was the starting point for the styling of the day. “I took inspiration for the flowers and styling from the beautiful surrounds of Hotel Endsleigh as well as Jamie’s kilt,” explains Charlotte. “Endsleigh provided so much inspiration for the wedding as a whole, including my bespoke wedding dress, which had little appliqué leaves hand-embroidered onto it.” Glorious arrangements of flowers carried their pretty colour scheme of pale blue and peach. “The Endsleigh gardens are so beautiful already, it was hard to know where to begin, but our florist Amanda created a spectacle I couldn’t even have imagined in my wildest dreams,” says Charlotte, who added finishing touches to the décor, such as pretty coasters and special napkins. “We also made the table favours ourselves: homemade vanilla rum – a special drink for us!” The couple’s afternoon ceremony was followed by confetti, and a canapé and drinks reception to the sounds of a string quartet, with a moment that Charlotte will always hold dear. “If I had to choose a favourite moment, it would be immediately after the ceremony when we had walked out of the drawing room where the ceremony was held. One of the amazing staff members was there waiting for us with two glasses of champagne. He directed us into an adjacent room, saying: ‘Congratulations, this is your time to take a moment for yourselves, enjoy it!’ Jamie and I were then able to just take a breath and enjoy those first few moments as husband and wife – it was magic!” The wedding breakfast was a feast to behold, comprising roasted crown prince squash and almond ravioli, followed by local venison, then honey parfait, all served with wine pairings. Coffee and macarons rounded off the menu alongside an apple sponge cake with blackberry curd and spiced buttercream. For the speeches, there was one standout moment that Charlotte and Jamie, and their guests, still talk about. “During my brother’s speech – he was Master of Ceremonies – he was saying some lovely things about me as his sister and how much he loves me,” says Charlotte. “The room was silent as he took a breath to move on when all of a sudden, our elderly grandmother shouts out of nowhere: ‘Pah… You’ve changed your tune!’ Cue the entire room erupting into laughter and a cracking photo of my brother’s reaction.” A night of dancing and feasting continued until the early hours. As for their advice for others in the midst of wedding planning, the couple recommend having an engagement photo shoot. “Even if it feels like the most uncomfortable, unnecessary thing imaginable, it really helped us be more relaxed on the day itself as we knew what to expect and what we should be doing,” says Charlotte. “It was also a great way to get our little dog involved in the wedding memories!”

NATALIE AND JOSH by TARA STATTON PHOTOGRAPHY tarastattonphotography.com
Garden Party Natalie and Josh embraced al fresco festivities on the hottest day of the year at Upton Barn & Walled Garden Natalie remembers spotting a “ridiculously tall, blonde man across the dance floor” at her local nightclub 13 years ago. “That tall, gorgeous blonde man is now my husband!” she laughs. Josh’s proposal beneath a beautiful old oak tree set the couple’s wedding plans in motion – and it was love at first sight when they visited Upton Barn & Walled Garden. “The minute we set foot in the walled garden and met with the amazing staff, we both just knew that this was our place,” reflects Natalie. “It was unpretentious whilst still feeling luxurious. We could really see us and our guests partying, and the outside ceremony space was truly magical.” The couple chose a palette of neutral organic tones with matte black accents to reflect the industrial aesthetic of the venue. “I love natural, organic materials and didn’t want anything to look too staged,” says Natalie, whose brief of “simplicity and texture” was beautifully met in the floral arrangements of crisp white and nude roses. The day began early for the couple, especially Natalie. “My bridesmaids and I got up at sunrise and went on a dog walk to where Josh proposed under our special oak tree,” she says. The rest of the morning saw the bridal party enjoying the wedding preparations in The Paddock at Upton Barn. “It was really relaxed – the interiors are heavenly; it felt like a spa!” Marrying during a heatwave meant the couple could have the outdoor ceremony they’d dreamed of. “It was the hottest day of the year with 30-degree heat. It enabled us to have a true summer wedding!” says Josh. “I remember hearing the beautiful music coming from the walled garden as I waited with my dad to walk down the lavender-lined aisle,” reflects Natalie, who cites the ceremony as her favourite moment. “Seeing Josh at the end really was magical and the smell of lavender will always remind me of our big day.” After the vows, guests enjoyed cocktails, prosecco and canapés in the sun as well as ice poles and fans to keep cool! Everyone then moved into the Stable Barn, which had been thoughtfully decorated. “Josh made sloe vodka for the tables, which we put in personalised bottles alongside the place names, which also had dried poppy seed heads from my lovely dad’s cottage garden,” says Natalie. Guests tucked into a feast featuring five-spice duck breast with seasonal veg and roast potatoes, a classic trio of desserts, and a cake made by Josh’s mum before the evening festivities got underway. “A huge shout out to The Busketeers for absolutely smashing our rather unorthodox first dance song, performing their very own acoustic rendition of Timber by Kesha and Pitbull! It was incredible and got everyone dancing!” laughs Natalie. Reminiscing on their day, she says: “It really was so special seeing all of our friends and family come together. It was just the most magical day.” When it comes to her advice for busily planning couples, Natalie lauds the benefit of being organised. “The sooner you sort things, the better,” she says. “I had the most chilled few weeks running up to the wedding as everything was organised. This meant I could spend time relaxing with my husband-to-be and friends.”

KATIE AND TIM by KATHRYN CLARKE-MCLEOD PHOTOGRAPHY kathrynclarkemcleod.com
Summer Love Katie and Tim’s ‘celebration of summer’ wedding on their farm brought together all their favourite things Having met while working at the same agency, Tim orchestrated a romantic festive proposal, popping the question to Katie beneath the Christmas tree outside St Margaret ‘s Church in Topsham in December 2021. The couple decided on a tipi wedding at their home on an organic cattle farm in North Devon and their families and neighbours helped them to bring their vision to life. “They all pitched in to help us with everything from building flower planters, sweeping the road, baking the cake, making signs, cleaning the church, setting up the tipi and so much more,” says Tim. “We were so grateful and couldn’t believe everyone was so generous in how they helped us.” The collective effort was worth it: their tipi reception was a wildly beautiful celebration of Devon’s natural beauty. “We wanted the wedding to be a celebration of summer, and the tipi was situated in a wildflower meadow on a hill looking out to Dartmoor, our favourite view,” explains Katie, who is a keen gardener and grows wildflowers on their farm. “Our brief was ‘summer colour’ – we sewed a variety of wildflowers around our wedding site and grew a selection of our favourite flowers such as gladioli, cosmos and sunflowers that we could use.” Opting for a ‘South-West first’ ethos, the wedding also showcased the region’s creative talents. “It was so important to us to work with as many South-West based businesses as we could,” she says. The day began with a ceremony at their local church for a small group of family and close friends followed by a reception on the front lawn of their family farmhouse, where they were serenaded by a string quartet. The rest of their guests then joined them for their tipi reception, sitting at tables dressed with homegrown blooms and bespoke stationery featuring an illustration of their home. The couple took inspiration from their farm for the wedding feast, with their own organic Longhorn beef featuring in sharing dishes such as beef teriyaki, beef brisket and nasi goreng. Brown sugar meringues and a cake featuring the couple’s favourite flavours completed the mouthwatering menu. As dusk fell and the band began to play, the couple ventured into the grounds for photos, which saw Tim treading on numerous thistles, in cow pats and catching his shoes in several holes, and Katie driving the RTV in her dress and heels! “Getting to celebrate at our home with friends and family – many of whom had travelled to join us – and introducing Katie as ‘my wife’ for the first time was so special,” says Tim, who also has some advice for those embarking on their own wedding journeys. “Share the planning between you,” he says. “If you’re planning a wedding at home or in a location that doesn’t have a planner, we highly recommend budgeting for a coordinator to support on the day. It relieves a huge amount of pressure, leaving time to enjoy the day without worrying about the particulars.”
