WELCOME
Newly engaged? Congratulations and
Love in colour
welcome to Wed! We hope these pages fill you with inspiration for a personalitypacked wedding in beautiful Devon. This issue is a celebration of colour in all its vibrant glory - and Love in Bloom sets the mood with its carnival of British-grown blooms. From the striking stems to the showstopping cake, the shoot not only showcases the glorious impact of a colourful palette, but the captivating beauty of British flowers. Nature’s Best follows suit, taking us to the idyllic setting of Wooladon Estate, where a rainbow of bright colours meets adorable animals and beautiful florals, while In the Pink celebrates the ever-popular hue at the gorgeous Brickhouse Vineyard. Then there’s Love and Light, a modern take on rustic barn styling with pops of bright colour at the Tithe Barn at Symondsbury Estate. For a splash of colour to wear forever, choose a vibrant gemstone for your engagement or wedding ring. From sapphires in shades of pink and yellow to coloured diamonds, let Ring Tones inspire wedding jewellery rich in symbolism and vibrance. A celebration of the personalities and loves of each couple are foremost in our real weddings. We love Jess and Joe’s joy-filled May Day festivities at Kingston Estate, which saw colourful floral arrangements styled with glitterballs. Then there’s Charlotte and Lewis, who chose sunshine yellow and fresh greens for their Italian-themed celebrations in the Devon countryside. From

What could be more bloomingly beautiful than British wedding flowers? Sustainable, in season and hotly in style, floristry from a local or British source is not just en vogue but boosts your wedding’s eco-friendly credentials to boot. Showcased in this styled shoot to breathtaking effect, Exeter-based florist Emma Hewlett created the arrangements as an example of her new British wedding florals package, as stylist Natalie Hyland of Hyland Weddings and Events explains. “Every single flower and foliage used will be locally sourced and as sustainable as possible. Emma will work with the couple’s chosen colour palette using whichever flowers are in bloom at that time of year to create something that is creatively unique,” she says. The focus for the shoot was “super bright and colourful while still having a modern luxe feel to it”, with The White Barn providing the perfect blank canvas backdrop. “I created a look that was still very elegant, but with bright clashing colours that showcased the florals while giving each flower its own space to really sing – particularly on the wedding breakfast table,” says Natalie. “By using lots of different coloured vases – and not packing them full to bursting with flowers – it created a striking yet simple look. Hand-painted iced cookies pull the floral theme to the edge of the tables while Isabella Day’s jewellery carried the theme throughout the bridal look.” Vases in sorbet shades, colourful candlesticks and bespoke stationery designs are dotted throughout the tablescape. A rainbow of glassware and table linens elevate the scene with differing tonal layers, while gold cutlery lends a little luxe interest. The flowers range from tiny single stems in miniature bud vases to small clusters delicately placed in bulbous vessels with a sensuous edge. The couple complete the scene. The bride clutches a colourful bouquet of mixed blooms and dons a gorgeous gown and veil with botanical detailing, while the groom’s suit provides a debonair ensemble with a fun twist – the bright boutonniere springing from his pocket a vibrant touch on a stylish shoot.

A renewed focus on fabric is seeing everything from texture to translucency gracing the runways. Not only is the choice of material capturing designers’ imaginations, but the detailing and finish are also being obsessed over. 3D accents, intricate beading, luscious lace, Swarovski embroideries and glittering sequins are all adding an extra level of dimensional interest, while silk, sheer overlays, ruffles, organza, cherry blossom appliqués, origami folds and reams of tulle are used to striking effect. Mix your materials, layer an assortment of features and customise your finish with your favourite adornment (such as pearl, feather or jewel) to further accentuate the look.

face time We love Angela Langford’s deeply nourishing skincare, and Balanced & Beautiful Face Oil is our latest crush. The luxurious mix of kiwi, rosehip and safflower is blended with omegas 3 and 6 to balance the skin; added cypress, bergamot and lemongrass clear blocked pores, while mandarin and frankincense tone and lift. Made by hand in Pembrokeshire, the British brand pours only the finest organic ingredients into its blends, while Angela’s personalised service allows you to target your specific skincare concerns. Leaving your skin balanced, soft and gorgeously nourished, we recommend making this wonder oil a staple in your pre and postwedding beauty routine. angelalangford.com
star serum The skin on our neck is as delicate as our eyelids but so often neglected in our beauty routines. Given the rise of ‘tech neck’ and the accelerated creasing of the skin due to technology use, not to mention bridal fashion’s love of plunging necklines, it’s high time we lavished it with a little love. Step forward Inlight Beauty’s Neck Firming Serum, a new concentrated botanical serum complex to firm, tone and protect the thinner skin of the neck and décolletage. Combining cacay oil rich in natural retinol, vitamin E and grapeseed oil with camu camu and green coffee extract, this 100% organic serum is filled with anti-ageing ‘dry’ oils, stimulating elastin and collagen while giving your neck some serious TLC. inlightbeauty.co.uk

The latest jewellery collections to bring on-trend bling to your bridal ensemble words Hannah May & Rebecca Matthews
IT TAKES TWO When choosing what to wear on your wedding day, a stunning outfit often needs a little something special to finish off the ensemble. After all, as Elizabeth Taylor once said: “Jewellery has the power to be the one little thing that makes you feel unique.” Whether it’s a plunging gown that will be enhanced by the most delicate of necklaces or sweet drop earrings to complement an elegant updo, bridal jewellery is so often the finishing touch that ties a whole look together. “If you are looking for a bit of sparkle for your big day, you need look no further than Swarovski, unrivalled in its field for delivering sparkling, popular designs at affordable price tags,” says Abi Davies from Plymouth-based jewellers, Drakes. With a range of sets available at Drakes, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to bridal jewellery that complements your sartorial decisions. The Mesmera set comprises a pendant and stud earrings, with a simple yet unusual design. Featuring a pear cut and octagon-step cut zirconia in a ‘toi et moi’ arrangement, the style is a perfect symbolism of a marriage. For a dressy look with a rose gold finish, the Originally set of pendant and drop earrings features Swarovski crystal pearls. The sparkling pave pendant, with matching mini hoop earrings with drop details, bring an elegant and classy element to the look. For a unique touch of pure twinkling brilliance, the Sparkling Dance set features single stone stud earrings and a halo pendant with Swarovski’s innovative ‘dancing crystal’ design. The blue gemstone seems to float, creating unrivalled delicacy and sparkle, while introducing a pop of colour – perfect for your ‘something blue’. allumandsidaway.co.uk (Drakes Jewellers is part of Allum & Sidaway Ltd)

Her three-toned Siren earrings, made with seven discs of 9ct white, yellow and red gold, bring a colourful element to a wedding look, while her Hammered Oval Link earrings add an earth-worn and textured feel. If you’re after hoops for a contemporary look, the Molten Hoops are made from platinum and inset with diamonds: a truly sparkling piece fit for a bride, while the Bubble Hoop earrings are a unique yellow gold twist on a classic hoop. LOVE STORY Devon-based jewellery company Irene & Jenny specialises in transforming your something old into something new, in the form of “the most beautiful, bespoke, breathtaking wedding rings using heirloom jewellery from both sides of the family”. Founded by mother and daughter Anita BrightleyHodges and Amalia Brightley-Gillott, the idea came about when Amalia inherited her grandmothers’ jewellery. “There were lots of lovely pieces my grandmothers collected throughout their lives, but some were broken or missing clasps, others were quite old-fashioned and not to my taste, but they held so much sentimental value,” she says. Anita set about incorporating a large citrine, two opals and tiny emeralds into a gorgeous gold ring for Amalia, and future generations, to treasure. “Not only does it symbolise the union of two people, but also the fusion of two families into one.” Proud champions of ‘sustainable luxury’, the duo only work with pre-loved family gemstones, with minimal wastage, while engravings further enhance the bespoke factor for stunning wedding rings replete with meaning. “The Irene & Jenny experience is about so much more than just having a piece of jewellery made,” they enthuse. “We are storytellers. We breathe new life into gemstones that have been locked away and forgotten.” ireneandjenny.com
IN YOUR ELEMENT A new capsule collection from Devon-based Wanderlust Life, Elemental is inspired by the powers of earth, air, fire and water, which feature on pendants and earrings via stylised iconography. Based on illustrations by Clara Jonas, the collection includes four organically shaped charms with each piece handcast in the UK using 100% recycled silver and ethically sourced gold. “Clara’s illustrations draw on ancient wisdom and I love how her aesthetic has a real synergy with the elements and their mysticism to perfectly spotlight the powers of the classical elements of earth, air, fire and water,” says Georgie Roberts, founder of Wanderlust Life. With the option of a personalised engraving on the back of the charms, the pieces make for a meaningful finishing touch for a bridal ensemble, which you’ll be sure to wear again and again. wanderlustlife.co.uk

NATURE’S BEST
Glorious colours and the beauty of nature take centre stage in this vibrant styled shoot at Wooladon Estate. A tucked-away idyll nestled amongst 500 acres of farmland and woodland on the border of Devon and Cornwall, the venue offers an enchanting backdrop for a close-to-nature wedding. Taking a completely flexible approach to weddings and allowing couples to be as creative as they wish in planning the day of their dreams, the estate makes the perfect canvas for this shoot. “My concept was to reflect what inspires me and my photography whilst also bringing together the very best of a selection of hand-picked suppliers. I wanted to promote my business origin,” explains Hannah Jenkins of Rabbit House Studio Photography who photographed and coordinated the shoot. “My business name is a little different but has a great back story originating from when my rabbits came to my own wedding. Animals have always been a huge part of my life and I love it when a couple tell me they are bringing their pets to their wedding day.” The carnival of colour carries from the blooms, glassware and ribbons of the tablescape to the floral arch, which makes a captivating ceremony backdrop with the gently draping willow tree across the still waters of the lake beyond. Stationery painted with florals and a colourful buttercream cake echo the playful charm of the scene. Donning Katie Woods Bridal’s romantic and sustainable Devon-made designs, the bride is effortlessly beautiful with her locks dancing at her shoulders, while her groom wears light grey with floral accents for a modern country-chic look. The rabbit and pony, however, are the stars of the show, bringing an adorable touch to a character-filled wedding immersed in the wonder of the natural world.

LOVE AND LIGHT
With its exposed brick walls, wooden beams and slate tiling, the Tithe Barn at Symondsbury Estate sets the scene for a styled shoot that echoes rustic beauty at every turn. “This shoot was inspired by the traditional pastel wedding palette, but with a contemporary edge,” explains Phoebe Taylor of Clover & Fern, who coordinated and styled the shoot. “I wanted it to be instantly recognisable as bridal, but with elements keeping it light, fresh and modern.” With colours slightly different to traditional pastels, it imbues brighter hints of orange and pink. “I wanted this trend to run through the whole shoot, which is what inspired me to use traditional brass candlesticks inside glass vases and opt for a classic wedding dress and suit for the attire, but with an airy, modern feel,” she continues. The natural light that pours in through the floor-toceiling glass doors shines a spotlight on the romantic styling, natural accents and florals, while the sleek tiers of the cake, adorned with a climbing trail of flowers, makes for a stunning sweet centrepiece. “The flowers give the whole shoot a contemporary and slightly wild vibe and I really think they complemented the historical yet beautifully renovated Tithe Barn,” says Phoebe. It is this gorgeous blend of classic and contemporary which makes the scene so enchanting and, most importantly for Phoebe, achievable. “It was important to me that the shoot didn’t just serve as inspiration to couples but was also attainable and accessible.”

IN THE PINK
Nestled amongst an idyllic glade of woodland and pasture in South Devon, Brickhouse Vineyard presents couples with a dreamily idyllic W-day backdrop, from the 18th century thatched Round House to the sweeping vineyard and renovated threshing barn and terrace. Stripped-back interiors and wild surrounds provide a beautiful canvas for couples to design a bespoke celebration full of individual character, as is illustrated with this styled shoot: a collaboration between photographer Charlie Flounders and stylist Becca Parsons from Evermore Events Studio. “Our concept was to show couples that it is possible to incorporate sustainable practices into their wedding without compromising on style,” explains Charlie. “Hitting on the trend of pinks and bright colours, we opted for a palette of hot and blush pink, lilac and dark teal with disco balls thrown in too,” she elaborates. “The results are a super fun, bright and colourful style merged with the beautiful setting of Brickhouse Vineyard – and using an incredible team of Devon suppliers.” Eye-catching details create a high impact scene and range from colourful glassware, stationery and plant pots to elegant tapered candles, colour-pop table settings and succulents in varying sizes and shades of green. The floristry – a blend of neutral and pink shades – ties the look together and complements the showstopping cake: a too-good-to-eat centrepiece that adds another element of texture to the multi-layered look. Not to be outdone by the setting, the bride showcases a spectacular trio of on-trend looks including a romantic pink tulle dress with a tiered skirt, a glitzy gown adorned with a gold leaf crown and a chic white suit completed with a sleek side ponytail and pearl-encrusted heels for the most en vogue evening wear.

TASTE SENSATIONS
“Local, popping with colour and flavour, and prepared with passion,” says Julie Hall of the ‘typical’ Posh Nosh menu. “We don’t really have a typical menu to be honest, but we offer many different styles of dining.” Your wedding food is in safe hands with the talented and dedicated Devon-based team, who have wowed guests with their culinary delights across the length and breadth of the county for over two decades. We sat down with owner Julie, who launched the catering company at her kitchen table back in 1989, to learn more about how Posh Nosh pours love and excellence into each and every dish.
How do couples decide what to eat? “Using simple, fresh and local produce allows us to create inspiring and seasonal dishes with a modern twist…”
“We have a guideline brochure of dishes to get started and then we encourage our couples to personalise their menu. Many things influence a menu choice – dining space, season, the couple’s theme and favourite style of dining. Some prefer a relaxed vibe whereas others opt for a more formal dining experience. Ultimately, we strive to make each and every wedding menu personal and very special for our couples.”
When would you recommend couples start planning the food for their day? “I would say it’s good to book your caterer 12 to 18 months in advance. Planning and tasting happens around four to eight months in advance with a firm style of dining required. Final menu planning normally happens after your tasting, where we can discuss what you liked or perhaps would like to adjust ahead of the big day.”
How does Devon’s produce influence your menus? “Devon, Cornwall, the Westcountry – we have it all! The best farming land for quality meats; mild weather for producing the best vegetables and fruit; wonderful dairy for our cream and cheeses; the sea on our doorstep for freshly caught fish, mussels and crab. Using simple, fresh and local produce allows us to create inspiring and seasonal dishes with a modern twist. From the Mediterranean to the Middle East, we use local products to make our menus feel like a journey taking you all over the globe. We also take inspiration from local restaurants and hotels that only consider ‘The 25-Mile Menu’. Even some herbs and edible flowers come from my own garden!”
Do you have a favourite season? “It has to be summer! The local produce of leaves, herbs, tomatoes and beautiful, soft fruits bring that wonderful pop of colour and vibrance. In summer there is also more scope for outdoor dining, especially in marquees or venues with doors opening out onto the lawn. The menus tend to be more relaxed, such as outdoor barbecues with large, colourful displays of seasonal salads. Winter does always have a place in

FRESH FRUIT Bring in an element of the season by incorporating fresh fruit, perhaps combined with flowers, to create a laidback, organic feel. An abundance of strawberries, blueberries and raspberries sing of summer, while passionfruit and pomegranate lend an exotic vibe. for a charity fun run rounded off with a concert or comedy night? Or plan a day of activity at a water or theme park, have a murder mystery weekend or casino night, head to a food festival or arrange tickets to watch a sports match. Think about who to invite and what they might enjoy to design a party that provides something for everyone, and – above all else – you. Instruct an entrusted friend to organise it (with guidelines) or be bold and allow them free rein to orchestrate a surprise party and see where the day and night take you.
For the inter-generational You may want to incorporate multiple generations into your pre-wedding parties – perhaps your baby niece, grandma or great-aunt. There might be ample opportunity to do this with your group party or to invite younger/older friends and family members to planning events such as menu tasting sessions, band appraisals, ring buying or venue visits. Think about how and where you usually spend time with them and use this to organise a special version of a similar thing. For example, if you pay your grandparents a weekly visit then arrange a professionally catered afternoon tea at their house while poring over their wedding album for inspiration, or take them on an outing to their wedding venue or ‘special place’ for an evening reminiscing over dinner or drinks. Pick an event that’ll pique the imaginations of young and old, from a Punch and Judy show to the theatre, and invite your parents and grandparents to an event that both they and you will all appreciate, like a book reading, wine tour, scenic walk and pub lunch, or even a family holiday.
For friends The growing trend for a post-wed honeymoon for you and your friends is spilling onto the pre-wedding party scene, with more couples opting to take a trip ahead of the big day instead of (or as well as) a separate hen or stag celebration. The idea of a group honeymoon or an ‘earlymoon’ is gathering pace because it’s a brilliant way to start (or prolong) the party mood, allowing couples to decompress and take time out of the planning period to have fun with a selected cohort. If you have friends that live abroad and can’t make the wedding, taking a trip to see them honours your friendship while doubling up as a de-stressing holiday. You could head out before the rest of the group to savour a few days just the two of you before your select few join you for a buddymoon. If you’re travelling from out of county to get hitched in the South-west during a destination wedding, then arriving early or lingering later will iStock.com/Andrew Peacock
provide the perfect space and time for a mini buddymoon. Rent a big house, book a glamping weekend, take a road trip or stay at your venue before or after the wedding to celebrate those final few single or newlywedded days with your most prized pals.

COUNTRY HOUSES & CASTLES Live out your very own fairytale in one of Devon’s elegant country houses or majestic castles
Pynes House Believed to be the inspiration for Jane Austen’s Barton Park in ‘Sense and Sensibility’, this elegant Georgian house provides the most breathtaking location for your very own love story. Set within 37 acres of parkland in the Exe Valley, the glorious gardens hint at the immaculate interiors, where you can marry in a choice of state rooms, all bathed in natural light and exquisitely styled. For dizzying romance, take your vows before the grand doors on the entrance steps with the majestic tree-lined avenue and gardens as your backdrop, before feasting and dancing the night away beneath the sparkling chandeliers of the Ballroom or, for larger affairs, in a marquee in the grounds. Romantic details such as the Romeo and Juliet-style balcony and the myrtle bush in the rose garden, which is believed to have grown from a clipping from Queen Victoria’s bridal bouquet, add to the dreaminess, while the beautiful bedrooms make for an incredibly special place to spend the night. Bickleigh Castle This is the place for a wedding rich in history. Beyond the stirring charm of the 11th century Norman castle, with its Great Hall complete with minstrels’ gallery and roaring log fire, there’s the 6th century chapel, Devon’s oldest building, and a truly enchanting setting for a blessing. The grounds are equally fairytale-worthy – the River Exe runs through the estate’s 1,000 acres of lush landscape and wooded valleys, while a cluster of cosy thatched cottage accommodation creates the feel of a wedding village. Kick-start the festivities with a Friday night feast; get married in the garden pavilion before dancing under the stars in the expansive grounds, with fireworks shimmering on the river. The next day, it’s all too easy to continue the festivities with a tasty brunch and fun on the croquet lawn and tennis court. bickleighcastle.com Total capacity: 120 Civil ceremonies licence: Yes Guest accommodation: for 40 in 18 bedrooms Dog-friendly: On request

SEAN AND NEIL by ROLLING PICTURES rollingpictures.co.uk
As Long As You’re Mine Sean and Neil’s beautiful country house wedding at Rockbeare Manor was as elegant as it was emotional Sean and Neil first met while working in London, embarking upon a variety of first dates that included “ten pin bowling, ice skating, cinema trips, meals out and cocktails!”, reveals Sean. The Valley of the Rocks in North Devon was the breathtaking backdrop for their springtime proposal, during which Sean surprised Neil by popping the question overlooking the sea in the company of one of their beloved dogs, Max. “This location has significant meaning to us as it’s the first place we went when visiting my family for the very first time together,” elaborates Sean. Rockbeare Manor was the stunning setting for their naturally styled wedding, which saw a fresh palette of botanical greens and white carry from the floristry to the tablescapes. Meanwhile, the wedding outfits and stationery injected a hint of modern glamour with shades of light sage green, dusky rose pink and gold. “We both got ready separately at the venue, which was good as it built suspense for the ceremony,” says Neil. The ceremony took place in the dining room as they made their separate entrances with their mums to a stirring violin soundtrack. “It was very emotional, especially during our personal vows we made to each other – and was made extra special as Max was our ring bearer,” adds Sean. Everyone spilled out onto the lawn for drinks, canapés and garden games, after which the newlyweds relished some time together for photographs in the picture-perfect grounds. “The wedding breakfast was amazing – the food was incredible and it was our first chance to sit down and digest everything that had happened so far,” says Neil who mingled with guests between courses of confit chicken leg and bruschetta of chargrilled Mediterranean vegetables, Creedy Carver chicken supreme and pave of Devon beef. Baked chocolate cheesecake and sticky toffee pudding provided the delectable finish. The speeches provided a particularly fond memory from the day – “it was lovely to break from tradition and hear from the mums” – and included a speech in Maltese from Neil’s mum as a nod to his family’s heritage. Another standout moment followed: Sean and Neil’s dress change into tuxedos for the evening festivities. “We wanted the evening to be a big party, so we had a big LED dance floor, amazing DJ with a custom playlist and photo booth,” says Sean, who delighted in his first dance with Neil to As Long As You’re Mine from Wicked – a hugely significant song for the couple who are huge fans of the musical. Gourmet burgers kept appetites at bay, and after midnight guests that were staying at the venue were treated to a special ‘nightcap’ service. “This was a nice touch as it enabled us to reflect on the day with our family and not feel like the day had suddenly stopped,” reflects Sean. A sit-down breakfast the next morning with family and friends “was the perfect way to end our special weekend”, leaving the blissed-out newlyweds full of advice for other busily planning couples. “Take your time and don’t rush any decisions. Consider all your options and make sure you’re both happy with what you have chosen,” urges Neil. “Use suppliers that already know your venue; it makes planning so much easier, because they can give you great ideas on how your day could look as they already know what works well and what doesn’t.”

SHANNON AND BEN by MELANIE BARNFIELD PHOTOGRAPHY melaniebarnfieldphotography.com
Magic Moments From glorious sunshine and butterflies to air guitar and entertainers, Shannon and Ben’s wedding was magical from start to finish When Ben began his placement year in the office Shannon worked at in 2013, neither of them expected a romance to follow. “However, after a few chance encounters on nights out, we realised we were pretty fond of each other!” says Shannon. “Fast-forward 10 years, and we’ve lived in three different counties together, bought a house, moved house, had a few changes in jobs and become dog parents to Clover.” A summer proposal at Snapes Point led to the couple planning their wedding at Deer Park Country House. A theme of pastel springtime colours, seasonal flowers and sparkle saw the inclusion of gorgeous faux and dried flower arrangements, as well as hydrangeas and pampas grass. “It was important for us to be as sustainable as possible and we wanted to keep some of our flowers and give some to our family after the wedding,” explains Shannon. The pastel hues were complemented by glass jars and vases decorated with macramé for centrepieces, as well as handmade macramé napkin rings and clay name tags with guests’ names stamped onto them. Shannon and Ben chose to meet in the venue’s walled garden for a ‘first look’ on the morning of their wedding. “This was such a special moment and we’d highly recommend doing it to other couples,” she says. “It allowed us to have half an hour together and helped us to calm our nerves.” The glorious sunshine meant the couple could have an outdoor ceremony at the summer house. “When Shannon walked down the aisle, she was followed by small yellow butterflies – it felt like a real life fairytale,” says Ben. “We felt quite nervous about standing in front of everyone to say our vows but quickly realised that everyone just wanted to see us happy and in love. We messed up saying each other’s names, which we were both worried about doing, but it actually broke the ice and made everyone laugh,” Shannon says. “It put us at ease a little more and the rest of the ceremony was filled with smiles and laughs.” After the love-filled ceremony, it was time for celebratory drinks and relaxing in the grounds. “As it was such a lovely day, we spent most of the time outside playing garden games and chatting with our family and friends,” says Shannon. A snack table filled with fruit, sweets and savoury snacks made a welcome alternative to canapés. “The main feature was our crisp wall, which everyone loved!” A wedding breakfast of ham hock, roast chicken and lemon tart and raspberry sorbet proved a crowdpleasing delight, as Dan Brazier, who thrilled guests with his magic during the cocktail hour before Shannon and Ben kicked of the evening revelry with their first dance to to AC/DC’s You Shook Me All Night Long. “It had everyone on the dance floor playing air guitar and got the party started!” says Ben. Bespoke Disco and saxophonist Daniel Costin kept the dance floor full. “At the end of the night, we had all our friends circled around us on the dance floor smiling, dancing and singing along,” says Shannon. “It felt so magical!” Reflecting on their day, Shannon advocates a considered approach to wedding planning. “Breaking down the planning into smaller jobs and tasks makes it feel way more manageable and enjoyable,” she says.

JESS AND JOE by LYRA & MOTH lyraandmoth.co.uk
Sparkle and Shine Jess and Joe’s colourful disco-inspired wedding at Kingston Estate brought the party vibes After nine years together, Jess and Joe’s holiday to Greece was more than just a postlockdown celebration, as Joe had managed to sneak an engagement ring in his luggage. “It was the morning of my birthday and we were enjoying watching the sunrise over the sea from our balcony with a glass of fizz when he popped the question,” says Jess. Deciding to get married on May Day, the couple chose Kingston Estate for a whimsical, fun and Beltaneinspired day. “Our focus was on lots of colour and beautiful wildflowers, along with plenty of disco balls to make sure everything sparkled!” says Jess. “We knew early on in our planning that we wanted to keep things relaxed and not too formal, so music and entertainment were a priority to create the party vibe we were after.” The couple held their ceremony in the walled garden, which was decorated with wildflowers, disco balls and May Day-inspired wands for guests to wave as the newlyweds walked back down the aisle! “We kept the ceremony short and sweet, with a May Day reading by the best man and a Dolly Alderton reading by one of my best friends,” says Jess. After the ceremony, the spring sun shone down on the beautiful gardens where the reception took place. “That post-ceremony high where we walked out to the cheers of our friends and family for our confetti shot was amazing!” says Jess. “We wanted to start the party early, and Clare made sure to bring the Ibiza party vibe with her saxophone set providing the perfect soundtrack for our guests.” A carnival of flowers and May Day-inspired ribbons, together with disco balls, brought colour and sparkle to the wedding feast with views across the rolling hills of Devon beyond. Guests tucked into heritage tomato and burrata salad, berbere squash with turmeric yoghurt and slow-roast mechoui lamb with sharing sides of crispy roast potatoes, and salads of carrot and radish, and sweet pea shoot and mange tout. Dessert was a trio of chocolate brownies, mini pavlovas and lemon tarts – delicious! The party then moved to the yurt, where Jess and Joe’s first dance to It Must Be Love by Madness was performed by The Indie Killers, who had everyone rocking. “To keep energy levels up, we had a very well-stocked sweetie stall and evening food of pasties,” says Jess. “As the music finished, Katy Sea surprised our guests with a nod to the fire celebrations of Beltane, which had everyone entranced and amazed!” Those who wanted to keep partying then headed to the Undercroft bar – “a hidden gem and the last surprise for our guests, where we kept the dancing going until the early hours”, says Joe. Looking back, it’s the overwhelming feeling of love that fills the couple with wonderful memories. “The whole day was really special, and we both felt so much love from all of our friends and family,” reflects Jess. “One detail that stands out is the guest of honour, Teddy – my family dog – making his entrance during the reception, complete with matching bow tie to the groom. He stole the hearts of everyone!” When it comes to top tips, Jess recommends blitzing wedding admin little and often. “Lots of spreadsheets helped keep us organised! Also, if you’re doing lots of crafting, we would recommend starting as early as you can as it’s surprising how quickly the weekends run away.”

HETTY AND DAVE by JONATHAN NEALE photoneale.com
Seasons in the Sun Hetty and Dave’s autumn wedding was a floral flurry of rusts, oranges and cosy rustic décor Going to university not only brought about a new romance for Hetty and Dave, but also a new home – with the couple staying in the area ever since meeting in 2010. In an homage to Hetty’s love of nature, the couple went on a camping trip to Wales in summer 2021, visiting Skomer Island for a day trip. “We were having a picnic lunch on a secluded cliff edge watching puffins and seals when Dave popped the question!” says Hetty. The rural charm of The Oak Barn perfectly suited the couple’s rustic, autumnal theme. “We’ve always loved autumn colours and dried flowers, so autumn felt like the right time of year,” says Hetty who opted for rust and burnt orange colours, dried flowers, conkers, orange leaves and white pumpkins. On the wedding day, an early start meant they all enjoyed a beautiful sunrise. “It was predicted to be a storm on the day, so it was a wonderful surprise to see the sun come up – we even returned the umbrellas as we didn’t use them!” says Hetty. Making use of the smaller barn for the ceremony, the aisle was lined with autumnal orange leaves, with the flower girl scattering extra leaves that the couple had collected from woodlands – with fairy lights and candles creating a cosy, intimate effect. “Dave said his favourite moment was seeing me walking down the aisle smiling,” says Hetty. “That was probably also my favourite moment because suddenly everything we had been planning and visualising for the past year had become real, and all nerves disappeared when I saw all our friends and family together, with Dave smiling at the end of the aisle.” After walking down the aisle to an acoustic version of Came Here for Love, the ceremony was a family affair as Dave’s sister-in-law did a reading, and Hetty’s sister sung Jack Johnson’s Better Together. A drinks reception with Kir Royale cocktails followed the ceremony, with lawn games in the garden, including a hay bale-lined skittle alley. Speeches were enjoyed before the wedding breakfast, which came in the form of roast dinner sharing boards with seasonal vegetables, followed by a trio of desserts: chocolate brownie, gingernut cheesecake and tart au citron. “We then put on our welly boots for a fun sunset photoshoot. Although the evening was a little cloudy, we finished in a field that looked over a picturesque view of the Devon countryside, and the clouds moved just as the sun was setting, creating a beautiful light and backdrop!” says Hetty. Then it was time for the dancing! “Neither of us like to be the centre of attention, so the idea of a solo first dance was not for us,” she says. “We instead had a fantastic ceilidh, which was a great way to get everyone on the dance floor and having a fun time.” Guests were treated to an evening of dancing as well as a kebab station, which incorporated lamb, falafels, pittas and all the trimmings. When it comes to advice for others planning their weddings, Hetty’s advice is a practical one. “We created a spreadsheet that worked backwards from 12 months and listed actions to complete each month,” says Hetty. “It was a good way to spread everything out and not leave it all to the last minute – it was much easier to organise everything when you only had a few tasks each month!”

MEGAN AND STUART by NOVA WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY novaweddingphotography.co.uk
Call of the Countryside Locally sourced food and flowers set the scene for Megan and Stuart’s rustic wedding Megan and Stuart were both studying at Newcastle University when they hit it off back in 2012, enjoying their first holiday together in Venice in 2013. Fast-forward to 2020 and the couple were back in the Italian city when Stuart booked a suite in the Hotel Canal Grande as a surprise. “He got down on one knee as soon as we got into our room as he was so nervous!” says Megan of the sweet proposal. “We held off on wedding planning given the Covid lockdowns and decided to start our family instead,” says Megan, explaining that the couple went on a ‘babymoon’ to The Pig at Combe “and immediately fell in love with it. Even though we weren’t actually looking for a venue at the time, we knew it would be perfect for our wedding.” Inspired by the rustic character of the venue and the colours of autumn, the couple chose seasonal flowers with local blooms for the bouquets, buttonholes and breathtaking ceremony arch for their October wedding. The dark green shade of the suits and floral bridesmaids’ dresses completed the naturally beautiful scene perfectly. With the help of their “amazing” planner, Phoebe of Elisabeth Shell Events, who also acted as the couple’s celebrant, their heartfelt outdoor ceremony surpassed Megan and Stuart’s expectations! “We opted to write our own vows and we were both pretty nervous about it; I think we just wanted to get through the ceremony and get to the ‘fun’ of drinks and canapes! But the ceremony was so special, thanks to Phoebe. After working with her for months, she knew us both well and it was so personalised, full of laughs and lots of emotional tears!” recalls Megan. “My maid of honour also wrote a poem from the perspective of our one-year-old, so it was lovely to have him be part of the ceremony in that way.” After the drinks and canapés, an incredible menu was served, including ‘home-grown’ cured meats, green tomato chutney and caperberries; slow-roasted pork shoulder with apple sauce; line-caught pollock with rainbow chard and shellfish sauce; wild plum and damson crumble with custard and ice cream; and buttermilk and blackberry blancmange with blackberry compote – all from The Pig’s 25mile menu. “One of the reasons we fell in love with The Pig was its amazing food and it was definitely a standout,” says Megan. As the evening continued, speeches and the first dance were followed by a performance by live band, Weekend Ticket. “The dance floor was packed from start to finish and we all wished they could have kept playing all night! They were definitely a big highlight of the day,” says Megan. Looking back, the couple are still awestruck at how wonderful their wedding proved to be. “We were told in the run-up to the day to be prepared that something would likely go wrong and we should just roll with it. In actual fact, the entire day was absolutely perfect, even down to the weather,” says Megan. “This is definitely in a very large part due to our coordinator, Phoebe, who kept everything running amazingly smoothly. To anyone else planning a wedding, my top tip is that a planner is worth their weight in gold; our day would not have been what it was without Phoebe,” she continues. “She found us the most amazing suppliers, saving us so much time during the planning process, and kept the whole day running perfectly with her on-the-day coordination, keeping the stress on our part to an absolute minimum.” Megan adds: “We would also really recommend having a videographer as well as your photographers. Matt captured the atmosphere of the day, and having those videos really keeps the memories alive!”

YASMIN AND SAM by HANNAH WILDE hannah-wilde.com
Upon the Moor It was a moorland romance for Yasmin and Sam who took their vows at Badgers Holt in the heart of Dartmoor Meeting at college a decade ago, Yasmin and Sam became friends in the class they shared together. “Our relationship grew over a few years and over many adventures,” she reflects. Sam proposed at sunset on a beach in Bude with a special furry friend present: the couple’s dog, Earl. “However, Earl decided to go for a run just before Sam asked, which definitely did not help Sam’s nerves!” she laughs. Yasmin and Sam set about seeking a wedding venue and Badgers Holt, a gorgeously rustic venue in the heart of Dartmoor, could not have been more ideal for the moor-loving pair. They filled the venue with a glorious array of purple wildflowers. “We absolutely love Dartmoor and just wanted to bring some Dartmoor and its colours into our wedding,” explains Yasmin. “The venue was perfect for this!” The couple took their vows before a breathtaking arch of foliage and flowers in every shade of purple. Flanked by bridesmaids in dusky pink, Yasmin accessorised her elegantly sleek gown with a bouquet of purple blooms that complemented the dainty florals in her hair. Sam’s grey tweed suit, finished with pink and purple accents, echoed the relaxed mood as well as the nature-inspired palette. “We had our beautiful retired greyhound at our ceremony and throughout the day, as he is a big part of our lives and we had to involve him,” says Yasmin. A colourful pink confetti moment and group photos followed while guests mingled in the tree-filled grounds on the banks of the River Dart. Settling at tables strewn with foliage and flowers, they feasted on vegetable gyozas, pork belly and scallops followed by trio of beef samosas, bonbons and fillet. Dessert brought more delectable options, comprising brownies with ice cream, sticky toffee pudding and Eton mess. After the feast, the newlyweds ventured onto the Tor-dotted heights of Dartmoor for photos with their photographer Hannah, who knew the local area well and could advise the couple on where to go. “My favourite moment was when we got to go up to the moors for some more intimate photos and we were so lucky to have a beautiful sunset over Dartmoor,” says Yasmin. “In fact, we saw a horse give birth to a foal – it was so beautiful to see!” Heading back across the moor beneath a full moon, the couple returned to cut the cake, a pretty confection adorned with pink and purple flowers above a tower of cupcakes, and then the dancing began, as Yasmin and Sam danced the night away with their loved ones. When it comes to the newlyweds’ top tips for engaged couples, their advice is simple. “Try to enjoy the process and not to stress about the little things – it will all work out in the end!”

CHARLOTTE AND LEWIS by TARA STATTON tarastattonphotography.com
Ti Amo Charlotte and Lewis threw an Italian-themed celebration in the heart of the countryside A matchmaking success story, love blossomed for Charlotte and Lewis when her friend put them in contact. Lewis was working onboard a ship in Bahrain when her friend’s husband approached him in the staff room and said “Do you want a girlfriend?” The pair got talking and the rest is history! A special place for Charlotte filled with fond childhood memories, the couple went to the Isles of Scilly for her 30th birthday. “We went for a stroll on St Martins before sitting down and looking over the bay. Lewis then got down on one knee and asked me to marry him!” she recalls. Inspired by their shared love of travel and the Amalfi coast, the couple’s Devon country wedding was styled with shades of lemon and sage, with Italian touches carrying from the flowers to the menu. The nuptials began with a church ceremony, where Charlotte’s brother Tom played Glasgow Love Theme by Craig Armstrong on the piano as she walked down the aisle, which was decorated with daisies and Italian ruscus. “The ceremony was beautiful,” she says. “We lit a candle to ignite our love for each other, and as the church bells rang after the ceremony, lemon and sage confetti was floating in the air as we ran towards our vintage car.” Moving on to Shilstone House, guests mingled in the grounds before taking their seats in the marquee styled with towering arrangements of sunshine yellow blooms. “It was a beautiful sunny day and the flowers in the garden were in full bloom. Fresh flowers filled our venue, the smell was incredible,” Charlotte recalls. The Italian-Devon fusion feast included tomato and mozzarella bruschetta, local Devon fillet of beef with dauphinoise potatoes, and Sicilian lemon tarte with raspberry coulis. “Lewis and I sat down during the wedding breakfast looking over at all our family and dear friends; we just couldn’t believe we had all these people in one room!” she reflects. Continuing with the travel-inspired theme, the couple used fresh lemons as name place holders, which the guests took home to add to gin and tonics. Further sweet touches included the French macaron favours in pistachio and lemon, a sweet bar and cake made by a family friend. The first dance was to Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong, which was poignant at the time, and even more so in retrospect. “This means so much looking back, as the lyrics relate to our most recent news of expecting our first child this year,” says Charlotte. Saxophonist Daniel Costin set the party mood for the evening, with The Swing Kings keeping the dance floor full until the close. Looking back, Charlotte remembers one moment particularly fondly. “Just after the ceremony, we hid at the back of the church and sat on a bench and just took it all in,” she says. “A private moment of pure bliss and happiness.” When it comes to wedding planning, Charlotte and Lewis are advocates of living in the moment. “Take time for yourselves and don’t stress,” she says, with an added tip for nearlyweds. “The best thing we did was to book a minimoon in Salcombe for two nights. To soak it all in, celebrate with champagne and take walks on the beach was just what you need as a newly married couple.”

regular | NOTES ON A WEDDING
Plan a so-you celebration with these top tips from the wedding gurus. This issue, we look at creative wedding entrance ideas
NOTES ON A WEDDING
If your venue allows, why not ride on into your reception on a rickshaw, tuk-tuk or some creative form of transportation? This will delight and surprise your guests. Jessica
Release your inner child
Creating a laugh is definitely a good way to start your reception and your marriage, so why not ride in on scooters or space hoppers? Sophie

Talk the talk
Have your MC or best man introduce you into the room as your married name, Mr and Mrs or the Bride and Groom – or better yet, let them have a little bit of creative freedom to drum up a wonderful reaction from your guests as you walk in. Hazel
Sparkle all the way
If you’re hosting your reception later on in the day or having a winter wedding, have your guests create

Choose a catchy and fun song so you can dance your way into your reception. Jessica
a sparkler tunnel through which you enter your reception. This will create a great moment to remember and makes for a fantastic photo! Jessica
Drawing swords
Enter in style
I had my first naval clients recently, and I can’t tell you how much the sword arch gave me goosebumps. The precision, the emotion and then confetti canons when they got to the end. Sophie
On your feet!
As you enter, encourage everyone to join you for a quick dance at the beginning of the reception before sitting down for dinner. It really adds to the convivial
Styling the entrance of your venue is a must – it’s what sets the scene and is the first thing your guests will see, so create some wow! Sophie
Travelling band
Have a band lead you and your entire guest party from the drinks reception to the dining – the band would need to be used to walking and playing, such

as a roaming band, New Orleans-style brass band or a mariachi band. Jessica
Be adventurous
Own it!
Go wild and hire a hot air balloon, a helicopter or zip line in (if you’re getting married at the Eden Project!). It will definitely create a buzz with your guests. Sophie

Arrive at your reception through a magical sparkler tunnel
Deck out your wheels in style and make a showstopping arrival
Confetti canon
Have your guests line up and enter your reception to a shower of confetti. You could go all out and also hire a couple of confetti canons to really create an impact. Jessica
Play on
Live music, such as a saxophonist, is a super cool upbeat way to set the tone. It should be fun, uplifting and something you love! Hazel
Light show
Hire some lights, either through your DJ or production company, and ask them to create a mini light show to coincide with your arrival into the reception. Go one step further and pair this with music, and you’ll have a really wow moment. Jessica
Surprise, surprise
Whatever you choose, keep the element of surprise and don’t share what is about to happen – your guests will enjoy it even more. Hazel
