WELCOME
dreamy days ahead Our cover image sees a boho-beautiful bride lazing on the warm, sun-kissed rocks of Mortehoe Point in north Devon. All tumbling beachy waves, bronzed skin and whimsical lace skirts, the evening sun shimmers dreamily on the calm Atlantic behind her. It’s easy to get lost in that image of golden light, which seems so distant as I sit to pen my editor’s letter on another grey day in lockdown. But, while the storm of Covid-19 still rages on, we’re keeping our eyes fixed firmly on the horizon here at Wed. Buoyed by the number of magazine orders, subscribers and newly engaged couples getting in touch over these past weeks – it’s been so wonderful to hear all your joy-filled stories amidst such bleak times – we’re looking forward to a future filled with the sweetest celebrations of love. And we’ve poured our hearts and souls into filling these pages with as much happiness, beauty and love as possible. Beyond the north coast dreaminess of our cover shoot, ‘Golden Hour’, you’ll find a glorious celebration of autumn in ‘Apple of my Eye’. Captured in the idyllic rural climes of Harefield Barn, showstopping Devon-crafted gowns and jewels meet flowers and styling abundant with colour and natural beauty. New intimate wedding venue Rock Farm makes an enchanting canvas for sprawling florals, dreamy dresses and reclaimed details in ‘The Lost Garden’, while ‘Wild at Heart’ captivates with its ethereal, free-spirited vibes together with fresh-from-the-moorland finds at new Dartmoor venue, Badgers Holt. Then it’s over on the sea tractor to Burgh Island Hotel in ‘On Burgh Island’, where art deco wedding styling receives a fresh and stylish update for modern couples. It’s such a privilege to be the editor of Wed and one of my favourite parts is undoubtedly getting to feast my eyes on your beautiful wedding photos for our ‘Got Wed’ section – and this issue’s weddings positively blew me away. From Adam and Darius’ tiny winter wedding at Hotel Endsleigh in the west of Devon to Shanice and Stephen’s elegant celebration at Deer Park Country House in the east, the love and joy is palpable in each image – and really lifted my spirits as the challenges of the winter lockdown started to bite. They also lifted my gaze firmly back to those bright horizons and days ahead filled with wonderful weddings, love and togetherness. Here’s to the future! Rebecca

LOVE IN THE TIME OF COVID-19
“We brought our wedding forward to avoid lockdown!” “Charles and I have been together for five years, and engaged since August 2017,” says Alicia. “We knew we would get married in 2020, but little did we know how things would turn out! When the pandemic hit in March, we were still eight months away from our original date. To begin with, we were sure things would be over and done with by that point, and we would have the wedding we dreamed of. As it came closer and the situation only seemed to be getting worse, we had conversations of postponing and we pencilled in a back-up date in February with our venue, Upton Barn & Walled Garden. But we knew we had waited so long for this and the most important thing was to become husband and wife. We were planning to go ahead with our original November date, but ended up having to bring our day forward in 48 hours to beat the national lockdown. We couldn’t have done it without the support of our incredible suppliers, and my mum was a godsend, helping me rearrange and pick up last-minute bits. Our original plans for our wedding day were very similar to what actually happened in the end. This was one of the best things about our day – we didn’t feel we compromised on anything, except of course many of our guests being unable to attend due to the restrictions. Despite everything, we had the most amazing day with our closest family and friends, and we will definitely have the big party at some point in the next couple of years, to celebrate with everyone, and I get to wear my dress again! How many brides can say that?! Our wedding day really was the best day of our lives. It was so special, happy and everything we had imagined. We didn’t compromise on anything – our venue, all of the décor, my dress, Charles’ suit, our photographer, even our cake that was made to feed 100 people – we had it all! Our cake maker really pulled it off in such a short space of time… and yes, we now have a freezer full of cake! One thing we notice about our wedding photos is that we have huge goofy smiles on our faces in nearly all of the pictures; I think it perfectly reflects just how happy and beautiful our day was. Now that we are finally married, a huge weight has been lifted and we are eager and excited for future plans, especially being able to rearrange our honeymoon to New Zealand hopefully within the next couple of years. We are so glad we decided to go ahead with our wedding. I would encourage anyone to embrace the ‘micro wedding’ and just do it. It’s so important to remember the reason for getting married in the first place, and it feels amazing to finally be Mr and Mrs Mason.” Photography Catherine Spiller Photography catherinespiller.co.uk Venue Upton Barn & Walled Garden uptonbarn.com Flowers Weddings at Poppys weddingsatpoppys.co.uk Catering Mulberry Catering Co mulberrycatering.co.uk Decor & hire Keeping It Vintage keepingitvintage.co.uk Glas Events glascollection.com Cake Claire Makes Cakes clairemakescakes.co.uk Hair EV Hair evhair.co.uk

“We changed wedding venue and date three times!” “We met in 2011 in a local nightclub, and started a relationship in 2012,” explains Lauren, revealing that Sam then proposed in 2017 in the Maldives. “We had our little boy in 2018 and we just love being a family. Our wedding was originally planned for 2nd May 2020. However, due to the national lockdown, none of that could go ahead. We found a different venue and booked for 2nd April 2021 – we were super excited and started to get things organised. Then came the announcement that weddings would only be allowed 15 guests. We spoke to the venue and they agreed that we didn’t foresee the numbers being increased to the guest list of 120 we’d planned. We explored the option of bringing the wedding forward to December and having just 15 guests; however, we wouldn’t be using the venue to its full potential, as it was very much an outdoor venue. Covid-19 had made me rethink the guest list, so we agreed on a more intimate day, and came to the decision that it’s about our love for one another. So Larkbeare House registry office seemed right, followed by an afternoon tea reception at Lympstone Manor. I fell in love with Bianca Jagger’s bridal outfit and found my dream suit from Reiss. A local hat designer created my floppy fedora hat in ivory with a ribbon band – it was all perfect. On the day, my brother Matt and his girlfriend Georgie were our witnesses at the ceremony. It was so special – the tying of the knot itself and Sam clenching my hand will stay with me forever. I put together a letter for Sam, which I gave him following the wedding, then we went to Lympstone Manor, where we met the photographer and our two-year-old son Freddie who joined us for photographs. It was so emotional seeing my little man – he had no idea what was going on but in his tweed suit and leather brogues he looked just like his daddy! Luck was on our side and the bad weather held off on our special day meaning most photos were in the grounds just as we wanted. My bouquet was absolutely gorgeous. The florist, Holly, asked if she could create something for me as a surprise and it was amazing – ivory and greens with a few bunny tails. Utterly gorgeous. We had the reception with just the four of us in line with government guidelines: a lovely champagne afternoon tea. The venue really looked after us, and it was everything we could have wanted and more. At times it felt like it was never going to happen, but it had (very differently to planned!), and it was the magical ending we needed and deserved. The next day we flew to the Seychelles; it was just perfect, we had a villa on the beach with our own pool so spent most our time listening to music, reflecting and making memories with our gorgeous little boy. We’ve decided in the future we will have the day we’d originally planned, with a blessing ceremony, and we didn’t wear our planned wedding outfits so we still have them saved. My advice would be do not think of anyone else; it’s hard but it is true, this is about you two and a celebration of your love. It was not how we planned it to be, but I wouldn’t change it now, the intimacy was just magical.” Photography Margo R Photography margorphotography.com Venue Larkbeare House & Lympstone Manor lympstonemanor.co.uk Suits Reiss reiss.com Hair Laura Cutting instagram.com/lauracuttinghairdressing Make-up Alexis Fraser houseofskincare.co.uk Flowers Hollyhocks Florist hollyhocks-shop.co.uk Jewellery Monica Vinader monicavinader.com

Nestled amidst leafy orchards and rolling farmland, Harefield Barn offers sweeping views across an incredibly picturesque stretch of Devon countryside. Abundant in natural beauty, the venue makes a stirring backdrop for this autumnal styled shoot where a medieval feasting vibe meets a fresh, modern aesthetic. “Drawing on orchards and harvest time, this autumnal shoot brings together my love of clashing colours and the bountifulness of the countryside,” explains Phoebe Chapman of Elisabeth Shell Events, who coordinated and styled the shoot. The bounty of nature can be seen throughout, from the apple-laden boughs and dramatic flowers and foliage to the feasting table bursting with colour and the flavours of roast pork and cider-soaked gravy – “the best of the West Country!” says Phoebe. “Reclaimed artisan backdrops and adornments, hand-dyed silk ribbons and handmade ethical jewellery showcase the wealth of cool, conscientious suppliers we have down here in the south-west, set off by the natural décor and textures of the outdoors.” The stationery, too, carries the harvesttime theme of nature and abundance, the apple leaf illustrations nestling in vibrant textured pockets to add to the feeling of cosy, while the cakes are striking in their simplicity, decorated with seasonal flowers and foraged crab apples. Couture designer dresses, handcrafted by Sarah Treble in Exeter, are the perfect fit for a shoot typified by lovingly crafted and carefully sourced details. The elegant simplicity and pretty detail of the Daisy dress contrasts with the exquisite lace and striking design of the Adrienne dress. Then there’s the showstopping autumn halo crown, another stunning Devon-made creation, adorned with foraged acorns and wheat sheaves to bring a head-turningly beautiful finish to a striking shoot.

As well as the label’s signature light, flowing dresses, ethereal detailing and fashion-forward embellishments, the new Earth Hero and sustainable Alter Eco collections feature head-to-toe lace, cool cut-outs and recycled chiffon skirts alongside daring skirt splits and seductively scooped open backs. Lovely’s spring calendar is rounded off in style with the Charlie Brear trunk show on 24th and 25th April ,when brides can enjoy a sneak peek of the Desert Dreamers collection. Loved by brides with an eye for a coolly contemporary self-styled look, the latest collection features bias-cut dresses, which can be worn as a striking standalone piece or layered with multiple textiles and textures. Pick from luxe fabrics like feather tulle, flower jacquard crepe and an assortment of laces, or pearl flower sequins for a touch of sparkle. Plus, clever multi-use features allow for maximum wearability and re-use, from tiered overskirts to reversible tops, as do detachable styling additions such as sleeves, sashes, belts and panels. Lovely also has an online sample sale at its Still White store (stillwhite.com/ store/lovely-bridal-devon) where brides can bag a bargain from some of the above designers – and even more! lovelybridal.co.uk

Wedding type: Sequel wedding Dress code: Two looks, twice the fashion Sequel weddings comprise of two parts, so generally involve two looks. For the initial ceremony, brides are tending toward something understated and timeless to utter their vows, though with an individual flourish to mark the special occasion. Think hourglass mermaids with built-in trains, elegant A-lines with delicate beadwork and square neck shifts with lace fringing. If you can’t decide on a single look, sequels provide the chance to play with several, whether you choose two separate gowns for each part, or rework one piece of fashion for double the wearability. From heirlooms worn in their original form for the ceremony and then customised for the secondstage reception to dress changes achieved through the versatile style of a single gown, two-looks can easily be created. Simple customisations such as maxi back bows, beaded belts, skirt shortening, dress dyeing and switching accessories can all transform your gown from ceremony to celebration. Alternatively, choose a dress with separates, layering and detachable features such as sleeves, skirts and trains, or make clever use of capes and cover-ups, which also add to the bespoke factor.

Wedding type: After-party/reception Dress code: Flamboyant and fabulous Having postponed or extended the waiting period between saying “I do” and the party that follows, brides are increasingly selecting styles that unleash an inflated sense of personalisation and celebration. The natural result is more attention-stealing styles that project an air of drama. From frothy fairytale gowns to colourful frocks and eye-catching sparkle, a free-spirited fusion of fashions is seen as the ultimate way to dress for the final act of your wedding. Everything from seductive waist-deep plunging necklines to backless designs, graphic patterns, exaggerated ruffling and giant fabric flowers all convey the fun and frivolous mood of the ‘more-is-more’ approach. But for brides desiring something a little less, subtler styles that can be pared-down (or hyped up) in their look include high-low hemlines, delicate slips, nude lace gowns and the Little White Dress, which remains an everreliable go-to for all types of modern wedding and bride.

Wedding type: Ceremony-only Dress code: Classic with a signature stamp Sleek and simple seem to be the keywords here, with sophisticated vintage styles, modern minimalism and contemporary romance leading the sartorial way. Clean lines through bridal suits, blazers and structured silhouettes such as satin ballgowns complement the event to a T; or for a more laidback look, jumpsuits (either flowingly boho or with a tailored edge), classic tea-length skirts and elegant halternecks all allow a piece of personality to filter through. Just because you’ve opted for a ceremony-only wedding doesn’t mean you can’t pull out a few style stops. From whimsical features like dreamy off-theshoulder balloon sleeves to lace accents, intricate embroidery, portrait backs and 3D florals, there’s plenty of scope for a little panache. Wedding type: Micro wedding Dress code: One-look wonder The exact vision of your wedding but with fewer guests, the beauty of a micro wedding is that budget can be freed up from certain areas toward others, including your gown. So you could commission an investment piece, customise an off-thepeg gown with high-fashion adornments, or pick a frock that reflects your character with fashion-forward flair. Though there may be fewer eyes on you in the flesh, a micro wedding perfectly lends itself to the presentation of your most individual bridal self. In short, whatever style you fancy should become fabulously manifest. And the two-look option still applies, allowing micro brides Marylise, The Ivory Secret
to showcase one gown during the ceremony before swapping or stripping off a layer to reveal an alternative for the reception. A change of skirt, veil, cape or train are the easiest ways to transform your outfit, while quick add-ons such as corsages, floral crowns or oversized bows can make you party-ready in minutes. Otherwise, separates remain one of the most bride-friendly modes of customising your look, with a quick top or skirt swap along with donning your dancing shoes that’ll move you from day to night with fashion-forward ease. The catwalks are awash with mini dresses and rompers with removable overskirts, which can also be worn after the event should you choose to host another celebration later down the line.

and the bride wore green Sustainable is chic. From innovative designers to vintage frock-filled boutiques, we’ve picked out some ideas for finding a dreamy dress with an ethical edge words Hannah May
A sustainable wedding is becoming less of an ideal and more of a must-have for modern brides. Bridal designers are central to driving the movement, with a growing number launching capsule collections and sustainable ranges in order to meet the eco-friendly demands of brides keen to wear something fashion-forward and benevolent to boot. From exquisite new designs to vintage, second-hand, bespoke and repurposed heirloom pieces, bridal fashion is in the midst of a very modern and beautifully sustainable makeover.
Rembo Styling Rembo Styling’s recent collections prove that bringing the environment to the fore doesn’t mean sacrificing on style or quality. Calling themselves out as a contributor toward the world’s climatic problems, the innovative designer declares that: “the clothing industry, in general, is the second largest polluter worldwide”, before explaining their ‘socially responsible entrepreneurship’ efforts to move toward a more sustainable solution. Specifically, the boho-chic designs featured in their Alter Eco capsule are created from substances that pollute less water and have origins in sustainable forest management, as they also work to reduce their use of new resources. Favouring recycled polyester, European hemp, organic cotton, cupro viscose and bamboo sourced from sustainable forest management, the entire collection is created on demand in a conscious way, while the company continually strives for more planet-friendly production methods. Peruse the collection to discover dreamy sustainable crepe gowns complete with organic cotton lace, recycled chiffon skirts with lace tops crafted from recycled yarns, and stunningly soft slips made with (sweat-resistant) sustainable bamboo. Days of Grace Vintage One of the easiest ways to find a sustainable dress is to opt for pre-loved and vintage fashions. Located in the beautiful beachside village of Budleigh Salterton, Days of Grace Vintage is home to a spectacular range of original antique dresses from the 1900s to the 1970s. “I really love the early pieces and have a rail full of exquisite high-necked, embroidered and pintucked dresses that brides are wearing now. The 1920s, ’30s, ’40s, and ’50s are favourites too, but if something is beautiful and a later date it’ll make the cut!” says owner, Linda Duriez. “There are more than 100 dresses in store, including a limited ‘sample’ designer range that fit with our look, from Jenny Packham, Temperley and Yolancris; like all our dresses there is only one – and when it’s gone, it’s gone!” Armed with a passion for antique lace and textiles, Linda has been designing and creating unique dresses to help make every bride’s vision into a customised reality. “I collect all the family stories as my brides love to know the history of their dress, and everything is handwashed,” she says of the care taken at every stage of the process. “I’m not a purist when it comes to fashioning an old dress into something a bride desires, from low backs to complete remodelling. Sometimes two dresses become one, so a damaged dress can live on – especially when so often the fabric and workmanship is so beautiful; and nothing is wasted,” she says.
Freckle Photography
“I like to think even if you only have £50 you could find something with us,” says Linda of her budget-friendly boutique, where the majority of pieces retail at between £300 and £500. “Buying vintage is an ethical option; it’s kind to the planet, respects and restores what is already there, and is always good value.” daysofgracevintage.com

big reveal such as a free bar or balloon drop, or, failing that, a compromise. So if vocal Aunt Jane has her heart set on everyone throwing traditional confetti but you’re more of a bubble-exit kind of girl, how about you give her her own flower girl duties and cones of confetti to scatter outside the church for your grand exit, while your other guests brandish bubble wands.
Laugh out loud Have a giggle. The veil that makes you look like a cockatoo? The fairytale shoes that are more ‘Three Little Pigs’ than ‘Cinderella’? Take it all in your stride and enjoy the downhill wobbles as much as the soaring, tulle-filled, lifeon-cloud-nine highs. If the giggles aren’t spontaneously happening, grab some old movies, get your best girls around and reminisce over films you watched as teenagers. Or hire a projector and screen your own video clips from your phones. Nothing helps us collapse into fits of giggles more than rummaging through old photos, notes and letters, especially to remember haircuts, bad denim and first loves!
Share the experience Don’t forget the most important person in all this: your other half, The One, your betrothed. Don’t let pre-wedding-day panic take over to such an extent that your other half starts to wonder if marrying you was the right thing to do after all! Make time for each other, involve them in the wedding planning, and most importantly don’t blame them if the tablecloths are an inch too short!
Live well Some days you might want to do nothing except throw yourself into your to-do list and bounce up and down on the bed in your new wedding gown (which all brides-to-be should, of course, indulge in). But for the days in-between, remember to live. If you spend every day thinking and worrying about your wedding day, you’ll miss out on today. And today in our book means giving yourself the time and space to appreciate how you feel.
PRE-WED WAYS TO FEEL GOOD Let’s talk Partners, friends or even pets – let your thoughts out to your nearest and dearest and have a good old chinwag; you’ll be amazed at how much lighter you feel.
Work it out Take time out of your day to work out and get your heart pumping. Exercise helps us relax and de-stress. How about joining a walking group or tennis club for
an activity where you’ll meet new people who don’t automatically associate you with wedding planning!

kiwi fruit, while zinc is often found in red meat, poultry and seafood. If you’re vegetarian or trying to consume less meat, zinc is also found in beans, nuts, pulses, wholegrains, oats and chickpeas. Selenium, meanwhile, is found in turkey, wholewheat pasta, eggs, brown rice, milk and yoghurt.
HAIR Lean meats and fish are the way to go if you want super-shiny locks. Mackerel, packed with omega-3 and 6 fatty acids, and tuna, can add shine to even lacklustre locks – with the added benefit of improving brain power, too (helpful for staying on top of that last-minute wedmin!). Salmon and shellfish have the same effect and if you’re a vegetarian or vegan, lentils pack a punch when it comes to your mane event. Lentils contain folic acid and iron, which help transport oxygen from your blood to your scalp, meaning stronger hair growth.
NAILS Olive oil, avocado and nuts all contain the kind of fatty acids that can help to keep our nails supple (essential for showing off that new sparkler!). B vitamins and specifically biotin promote healthy cell growth, so look out for biotinrich foods such as spinach, egg yolks and mushrooms. That sounds like the beginnings of a delicious and super-healthy omelette or fry-up to us.

Nutritionist Rebecca Gowers from IgniteYou shares her tips for feeling awesome in the run-up to W-day
Some foods have the added benefit of naturally whitening your teeth. So opt for strawberries, apple, celery, carrots, pineapple and oranges and you’ll not only look sensational beaming your megawatt smile in the wedding album, but you’ll save yourself a fortune at the dentist, too!
Find a balance. One of the ways you can really boost
your energy and feel awesome for the big day is to balance your blood sugar levels. Rather than reaching for the sweet stuff when feeling stressed, be sure to
have a protein-rich snack full of good fats and carbs
BODY Maintaining a healthy body will help you feel your absolute best in your wedding finery, and staying well is something you ideally want to maintain. The good news is, consuming

our body’s cells, organs and tissues, and it also flushes out any waste and toxins (hello, clearer skin!), regulates your temperature and helps your brain to function properly. These all sound like things the modern bride needs in order to be at her most beautiful and brilliant on the big day and beyond.
MIND

end up on a sugar rollercoaster, which makes you feel exhausted as well as affecting all systems in your body. So you need to ‘throw a log on the fire’ in the form of
protein and fats!
Memory and brain-boosting foods include – as well as oily seeds, dark chocolate, oranges and walnuts. Those last

MOOD & ENERGY Finally, to keep motivation up during wedding planning, busy shopping trips and table plan discussions, stock up on energy-rich foods such as bananas and avocados. Research also suggests mood is linked to gut health, so foods packed with friendly bacteria for your gut include probiotic-rich yoghurt, sauerkraut and pickled cucumbers.

ensure every cell is energised. You need to make sure you don’t have too much, so stick between 1.5 to 2 litres a
day (if you are very active, you will need to increase this amount). Unfortunately, tea and coffee don’t count, and can end up making you feel more thirsty and dehydrated.
So stick with some gorgeous herbal teas and water – and it will help you feel amazing in the lead-up to your big day. Seeking a standout engagement or wedding ring tailored entirely to your vision? Be inspired by the beautiful commissions from these talented designer-makers words Hannah May
www.wedmagazine.co.uk
YOURS TRULY
Why relegate your wedding rings to the bottom of the list when, with a little pre-thought, you could have a personally significant piece of jewellery created especially for you? After all, when the wedding day is over, it’s the one thing that remains on hand and in sight for the rest of your days together. Here’s Wed’s guide to the wedding ring commissioning process, including how some couples have poignantly achieved the personalisation factor for rings that say much more than ‘I do’.
JUSTIN DUANCE Cornwall-based jeweller Justin Duance will create your bands from scratch using any precious metal including gold, palladium and titanium. From meetings, mood boards and example pieces, he will individually design and handcraft your ring to match your vision, gathering materials in-house, which include salvaged woods and recycled metals, or reworking heirloom pieces with family history. Specialising in wood inlay rings and sandcasting, each element combines to ensure wholly personalised results, with couples an integral part of the process by selecting the sand or wood from a meaningful place to give each band its unique texture, tone and style. After material selection comes the design – think shaped rings, halo settings, inlays, diamond clusters and stacking sets; the possibilities are practically endless. Your choice of finish completes the look and adds further character, from laser engravings to fingerprints and inscriptions, all rounded off with Justin’s maker’s mark. Liseve and Thom’s wedding rings were a particularly memorable commission. “They were cast from their parent’s medallions worn as children. If you looked closely you could make out their teeth marks in the high carat gold,” reveals Justin. “As a little extra, we photographed the medallions, which the couple had framed and gifted to their parents on their wedding day. We mixed their highly sentimental gold with other metals to change the colour and reduce the purity to 9ct. This was then cast in their own sand collected from the banks of the River Tara in Montenegro, a place very special to them.” Another standout commission was Gemma’s wedding stack, which was designed to represent her family. “Each stone is a member’s birthstone; the central 18ct white gold ring represents her and her husband with a sapphire and amethyst,” explains Justin. “The 18ct yellow gold and rose gold rings represent each of their children, one with a tourmaline, the other an alexandrite. All three rings were cast in a mix of Gwithian sand collected by her mother and Southend sand collected by his.” Then there was Jeannie and Joshua, an American couple who fell for Justin’s sandcast rings through Etsy and hiked to their ‘secret spot’ in Joshua Tree, Los Angeles to collect sand, which they posted along with their heirloom gold and diamonds. Justin created a chunky sandcast band for Joshua and a distinctive faceted ring for Jeannie. “The diamonds set around the rings in particular positions represent them and their two ‘fur babies’ – which of course were present at the wedding! It’s very humbling when couples trust us to make their rings having never seen our jewellery in person,” he notes. justind.co.uk

ERIN COX A visit to Erin Cox’s Exeter boutique will treat you to glistening displays of handmade jewels of the highest quality, which often present couples with an inspired starting point. Since each piece she creates is specifically designed around the gorgeous gems and metals she stocks, each one is entirely unique. Hand-selecting her own materials, including gold, platinum and palladium, she then designs and crafts the pieces herself and sets her own stones. When it comes to diamonds, Erin’s focus on excellence is reflected in her exclusive use of GVS1 stones as a minimum quality, however large or small. She also works closely with a fair-mined diamond company in America to offer ethical diamonds and is proudly registered with the Fairtrade Foundation so she can offer ethical Fairtrade gold jewellery. Since every item is handmade, each can be sized, adapted or used as inspiration for an entirely new piece, all in-house, and with Erin’s personal touch. Alternatively, couples desiring an entirely bespoke piece – or with heirloom jewellery they’d like remodelled –can request a commission. All commissions start with an appointment to discuss materials, how the ring will be worn, and budget. If you have your own materials Erin will inspect them and assess the suitability of the stones for reuse. “Some old antique stones may be fractured and cannot be used, or they may need re-polishing, which we can arrange,” she says. Honing your choices of ring thickness, colour combinations of stones or metals, shape, setting, finish (matte, polished) and chain weight leads to initial sketches – often with different layouts – until a final design is agreed. Erin recounts a standout commission whereby the client wanted a keepsake as a reminder her of yearly family holidays on the Devon coast, where the blue sapphire mirrored the ocean and the tsavorites represented the grass of the cliffs, while a concealed diamond planted inside the ring symbolised a secret treasure. “Over the past 15 years I have created a lot of bespoke pieces and they bring me such pleasure,” she says. erincox.co.uk

WILD AT HEART
With its rugged, sprawling expanses and ancient Tor-dotted heights, the romance of Dartmoor is undeniable, its untamed beauty making a wildly atmospheric backdrop for a wedding. Located in the shadow of Yar Tor, the meandering River Dart weaving its path through its leafy grounds, Badgers Holt sits in a secluded and sheltered location in the heart of the moor. Now opening its doors for weddings, the former fishing lodge is immersed in natural beauty, from the rushing water of the riverbank to the dense woodland beyond. A versatile space ideal for couples seeking a relaxed celebration, the venue offers rustic blank canvas spaces as well as ceremonies and receptions on the river bank. This styled shoot typifies the charm of a back-to-nature wedding amidst the wilds of Dartmoor. Echoing the surrounding landscape through each and every detail, natural hues and textures are key to the aesthetic. From the wooden table laid with earthenware plates and woodland-floor finds to the haybale seating and foliage-filled ceremony arch, plus the floral arrangements of muted seasonal blooms, ferns and pampas grass, it gorgeously conveys a ‘just-gathered’ look. Bohemian touches abound, from the vintage rugs, lanterns and festoon lighting to the striking bridal accessories, while celestial accents such as the bride’s embellished gown and the moon arch – dressed with pampas grass, foliage and blooms to complement the autumnal colours of the landscape – enhance this free-spirited celebration of the elements. The magic heightens as night falls, a choice of cosy spaces inviting joy-filled gatherings: there’s the Garden Room, with its wood-burning stove and carnival of fairy lights, and the banks of the river, where festoon lights and firepits make the most enchanting scene beneath the starry Dartmoor skies.

feature | GROOMS | ECO EDGE
ECO EDGE Think grooms wear, think sustainability – where conscience combines with style for outfits as fashion-forward as they are forward-thinking words Hannah May
From suits crafted using eco-friendly fabrics and methods to hire services, vintage wear and second-hand options, the modern groom is spoilt with clever ready-to-wear, tailor-made investments, and preloved options all with a gratifyingly benevolent twist. Here are Wed’s top picks of the latest sustainable lust-haves…
TRANSCENDENT TAILORING The Ultra Suit by Tranzend is a waterproof, anti-odour, ultra-stretchable, wrinkle-free, breathable and UV protected two-piece suit and white shirt, or as the innovative creators say: “sartorial aesthetics, sophisticated technology and environmental sustainability combined into a single two-piece suit for all occasions.” Ethically produced from recycled plastic bottles and coffee grounds, the suit seamlessly blends function, form and eco-friendliness and can sustainably be worn on multiple occasions, whatever the event and season. tranzend.co.uk

ECO EDGE
SUITS YOU, SIR! Hiring your suit is an obvious ‘green’ choice, though the specifics can have greater impact, for example, a wool suit scores extra sustainability points since it’s naturally biodegradable, while narrowing your selection to local or UK-made brands reduces your carbon footprint (and ensures quality control to boot!) “Both of our hire companies have state-of-the-art eco-friendly dry-cleaning processes that are kind to the cloth as well as the environment,” reveals Alan Walker from Cornwall Suit Room. “Our own dry cleaners use a wool mark-approved lagoon cleaning system by Electrolux where no solvents are used, and all products are biodegradable for chemical-free drainage.” One of their stockists, Skopes, boasts a history of social responsibility. “How to minimise our business’s impact on our environment has been something on our radar for quite a while,” they declare while launching a new collection of sustainably sourced suits made in partnership with Lyfcycle. Meanwhile, if you do opt to buy, try to select something with a multi-purpose or timeless element, such as a tweed jacket, tartan, or checks that can be dressed down after the event with jeans, or worn with chinos to other formal celebrations. “Most of our waistcoats and neckwear are made by Heirloom Waistcoats and Anthony Formal Wear; both companies are proud to be still making them in Great Britain,” adds Alan. cornwallsuitroom.co.uk
GET SHIRTY A crisp shirt is integral to a groom’s ensemble, so choose wisely by considering quality, cut and conscientiousness. Arthur & Henry’s organic cotton shirts are the style-meets-substance solution. Their cotton comes from certified Fairtrade organic farming groups, which means that apart from the environmental benefits of farming organically, the farmers also receive a financial boost by being part of a support organisation. To achieve a classic look, pick their white or blue Chislet double cuff shirt in a fine herringbone weave, or white Oxford weave shirt with or without a button-down collar for a slightly more relaxed look. For grooms desiring something with an extra dash of panache, the blue or pink striped organic cotton shirt with a contrast floral trim is a slimmer fitting, eye-catching choice. All shirts are cut longer so they don’t come un-tucked and have horizontal bottom buttonholes to prevent splaying, while signature but discreet orange detailing provides an extra luxe touch. arthurandhenry.com
DOING GOOD With the fashion industry experiencing a shift in priorities and practices, Theory’s Good Collection is a prime example of today’s environmental refocus. “With the initial goal of making our signature fabrics 100% traceable by 2025, we have begun the work of transforming the way we produce our clothes,” announce the fashion philanthropists. “We are especially proud that in addition to representing the exceptional quality that defines Theory, our ‘Good’ fabrics are ethically sourced and developed in collaboration with fabric mills at the forefront of sustainable manufacturing.” The result? Good-looking grooms dressed in do-good clothing for more kindhearted fashion. Peruse their capsule collection for the latest finds: we think their Nordic blue Bowrey blazer in Good Wool pairs perfectly with their white Sylvain shirt in Good Cotton, while their Smoke coloured Clinton Blazer in Good Linen looks and feels swoon-worthily cool. theory.com/mens-good-collection

THE LOST GARDEN
Rock Farm occupies a tucked-away corner of east Devon. A stirring sense of history is palpable at every turn of this wonderful old Domesday property, from its ancient beams and original cob and stone walls to the almost untouched charm of the Potting Shed, where wild ferns peep between time-weathered bricks. Opening its doors for intimate weddings, this styled shoot honours the eclectic, untamed beauty of the new venue. Bathed in natural light, its vaulted ceiling crisscrossed with timeworn beams, The Granary marries history, romance and an intimate ambience. Here, the shoot’s luxury overgrown garden aesthetic can be seen most strikingly in the table styling, where urns spilling with foliage and flowers in shades of warm burgundy and dusky pink meet potted plants, natural linens and candlelight. Sapling favours, which started life in the surrounding flower beds, signify the sustainable ethos and love of nature at the heart of Rock Farm. “The rich overgrown foliage and flower installation seemed to flow from the wall – a nod to things being reclaimed by nature,” explains stylist Phoebe Stanaway of Elisabeth Shell Events. The raw and romantic beauty of the venue continues in the gardens where a striking pergola with a quirky rusting tin roof is cradled by trees and a pretty lawn for outdoor ceremonies. Then there’s the Potting Shed, an intimate and earthy space with a cobbled floor and potted plans galore where the bride and groom steal some cherished moments. “I placed objects lost and found inconspicuously about the place to be caught out of the corner of your eye; a pair of specs, some old Dickens books and the delicious cake sat on an old Singer sewing machine table added to the repurposed idea of random objects reclaimed,” explains Phoebe. Effortlessly capturing the romance of a contemporary country wedding, the bridal look pairs whimsical modern gowns with fresh and natural hair and make-up. Echoing the botanical theme, a ball gown embellished with floral and leaf appliqué detailing and full tulle skirts looks dreamy on a loved-up wander around Rock Farm’s garden paths. The groom, meanwhile, opts for a coolly individual tweed ensemble. Together, they take in far-reaching views across this hidden and captivating corner of Devon.

Today’s weddings are all about the experience.
Beautiful and the Feast
And what could be more of a sensory feast than a hands-on, interactive eating experience, guaranteed to bring a sense of drama as well as deliciousness to your table? From private dinners the night before the big day to breakfast banquets, weddings provide the perfect excuse to treat your guests to a gastronomy that extends beyond the traditional sit-down meal, with the likes of sharing platters, mobile catering, cook your own, themed dining and a creative smattering of sweet treats designed to sate appetites, tickle taste buds and promote a fun, intermingling vibe throughout. Here are some of our favourite interactive dining trends and how to deliver them on your wedding day with palate-pleasing aplomb.
Sharing platters The penchant for platters continues to grow while

taking new, innovative forms to keep guests guessing. “For interactive food experiences, our sharing platters and dessert tables feature top,” says Louisa Beetham from Beetham Food (beethamfood.co.uk). “They are hugely popular and couples will consider a sharing platter for each course, or one whole dessert for each table to share.” Sharing food is key to the ethos of Beautiful and the Feast (beautifulandthefeast.com). “It’s all about connection to us, and ensuring your favourite humans connect with our food, with each other and with you, the happy couple, just means that’s there’s a happy buzz flowing through the whole love-soaked day!” says Emily Colwill from Beautiful and the Feast. “Sharing an experience, a conversation, passing food around a table, eye-contact ‘mmmms’ and a whole bunch of ‘have you tried this-es?’ are what we always aim for, and to hear those kind of noises as we slalom through tables make us want to high-five every

single guest.” There’s endless scope for personalisation, with couples working alongside caterers to create unique and eclectic menus. Pick a theme (world tour, local cuisine, your favourite book/film), dish (curries, roasts, pies) or personal preference (plant-based, locally sourced) and a select a series of supersized plates to match. “Barbecues also help to add to the interaction,” adds Louisa, while Lucy Barber from The Good Food Catering Company (thegoodfoodcateringco.co.uk) lists their giant paellas as a popular choice, allowing you to present a colourful, self-serve feature while customising your cuisine to both personal and crowd-pleasing effect.
Mobile and bespoke catering Mobile catering is one of wedding world’s hottest trends, providing flexibility and versatility with regards to space and dining, along with adding a showstopping centrepiece

Argentina to Jägerbombs on a first date or specially created bloody marys using ingredients that are part of their heritage, we go the truly exceptional experience for couples and extra mile to make it a truly exceptional guests alike. Aside from the drinks, we also offer our large customised firepits, festoon lighting, fairy light canopy and festival flags to create an awesome outdoor bar/chill-out area that allows couples and guests an awesome to take five away from the dance floor, watch the sun go down and catch up with friends and family.” The south-west is home to a superb selection of food trucks and mobile catering options, such as woodfired pizza from Flour & Flame (flourandflame.co.uk), barbecued flavours from Dirty BBQ (dirtybbq. Kern (kernofkernow. uk) and beautiful Bundt cakes and coffees from Kern (kernofkernow. co.uk).
Self-carvery and live cooking Transform dinnertime into a spot of fun role play by appointing one person per table to act as head chef. one person “We’ve been doing a ‘guest chef’s table’ where one guest is nominated on each table to serve the rest of the table – usually a roast – and they carve wearing a chef hat,” says Louisa. “It’s fun and creates interaction and conversations.” Take it a step further with a chef’s theatre, live cooking, or involve

your guests with a ‘DIY dining experience’ with design/make your own options such as pizzas, cooking with hot stones or Korean-style table barbecue grills, and themed buffets or banquets.
Foraging and feasting Locally sourced produce is a top trend in wedding catering, and you could invite your guests to sample some homegrown flavours while making memories in a number of ways, from strawberry picking to incorporating a vineyard tour and wine tasting into your wedding weekend itinerary. With an expanding number of venues growing their own and featuring veggie patches, kitchen gardens and polytunnels, you could select your wedding venue accordingly to suit and have a helping, hands-on approach to feeding your guests. Perhaps you could even host an expert-led foraging session before sitting down with a well-deserved and uber-fresh feast.
Dessert tables and sweet treats One of the easiest ways to create an interactive eating experience is by focusing on the sweet stuff. Dessert tables, sweetie stations and roasting marshmallows or s’mores around a firepit all add another

culinary dimension to your day, while chocolate or drinks fountains (or Beetham Food
you could go savoury and retro with fondue) always provide a talkedabout feature. “Our much-requested pavlova stacks with roasted strawberries and flowers are a total showstopper for tables to share,” says Emily. “There’s nothing like taking a huge spoon to a pile of meringue, cream, fruit and flowers and then sharing it between the new friends you’ve made on your table. Pure heaven!” “Last year we served an afternoon tea menu on vintage crockery from our sister company The Creative Crockery Company,” says Louisa of another lip-smacking idea (thecreativecrockerycompany.co.uk). “Three-tier cake stands and teapots all constantly replenished…it created lots of interaction with guests serving each other and looked amazing!”

The readings should add a personal and memorable element to your wedding ceremony. Here are some expert tips on who to choose and how to find the right words words Lucy Higgins

MORE THAN WORDS
Whether you’re marrying in a church, a barn, or planning a humanist ceremony beneath the trees, chances are you may want to include some form of reading before or after your ‘I do’ moment. Readings serve a range of purposes during a wedding ceremony: they can add a moment of calm or reflection; they can embrace the tone or style of your wedding; they can also bring a uniquely personal element to proceedings. It’s also a beautiful way to include important people in your day. And that brings us to your first task: who to ask. As such a special element of a ceremony, choose someone who’s meaningful to the two of you, though do bear in mind whether your chosen reader will feel nervous or uncomfortable with speaking in front of a large number of people. “Volunteers are best!” says Nicola Le Couteur Bisson from the Guild of Cornish Celebrants (cornishcelebrants. co.uk). “Match the reading to the reader and encourage them to rehearse reading their chosen piece out loud – so different to reading to yourself!” Emily told us she asked her brother to do a reading, but instead of jumping at the chance, he aired a concern. “He’s quite an emotional person and said that watching me walk down the aisle would probably set him off crying, so he didn’t want to be reading soon after that,” she explains. “We decided he would do a short reading after our vows. It turns out he was right: he was a blubbering mess (which was very sweet) and there’s no way he could have done the first reading. I’m so glad he spoke up in advance!” It’s also a lovely way to honour a special person, as Caroline explains. “We had a small wedding, and I decided to have just my sister as my bridesmaid,” she says. “But I wanted my best friend to also have a role, so asked her to do a reading. She was really happy to be part of the ceremony, and it was a special experience for us to both go through sharing readings and choosing one together.” Children can also be a beautiful addition to your ceremony. “If you choose a child to be a reader, consider allowing two of them to do it as a ‘double act’,” suggests Nicola. “They will give confidence and support to each other.” Once you have decided who you’d like, and they’re comfortable, make sure they have your chosen reading in plenty of time so they can practise. Even the most confident of readers can falter when faced with a whole audience of your loved ones at an emotionally charged event! “As celebrants, we always talk to the readers before the ceremony starts so they know where their part is in the context of the wider ceremony and reassure them that there is plenty of time,” says Nicola. “We also encourage them to take their time with the reading – half normal speaking speed is ideal – and we bring a microphone for them to use if appropriate.” So, how do you choose what you’d like them to read? “Consider the type of ceremony you are having,” says Nicola. “If it’s a religious wedding, you will probably be encouraged to have at least one religious reading; if it’s a civil wedding with the Registration Service, the reading must be totally secular and not come from or be adapted from a religious text. And if it is a wedding celebration led by an independent celebrant, there is much more freedom to choose any reading – religious, spiritual or secular.” This also goes back to how a reading can help to embrace the tone of your wedding – while it is, of course, a joyous occasion, do you want to err on the side of traditional, or maybe bring some humour into your ceremony? You could even have a mix, perhaps choosing a more thoughtful reading to begin, and then opting for something light-hearted after you’ve said your vows and the mood switches to celebration. If you’re struggling to choose a reading, you could even ask your chosen reader to pick one themself, as Philippa did. “I’d asked my best friend from school to do a reading at our wedding, but I didn’t have any ideas of what she could read, other than I wanted an excerpt from a book,” she says. “She did some research and then when she came back to me with options, I asked her to choose it and keep it as a

surprise for the day. She read an excerpt from Freckle Photography
‘Captain Corelli’s Mandolin’ that begins ‘Love is a temporary madness…’ It was perfect, and as I didn’t know what she’d be reading, it added a really lovely surprise element for me and my partner too.” “Ideally readings should connect with the couple, be recognisably about them, their personalities, or the love they share for each other or for a pastime or place,” says Nicola. “The reading then will enhance the whole ceremony, rather than being a ‘time filler’.” Some of the most sentimental readings are those that are handwritten or adapted to be personal to you both as a couple. If neither you, your partner, nor your chosen reader feel confident with putting pen to paper, don’t discount adapting something you already love. “Readings do not have to be intrinsically romantic in tone,” agrees Nicola. “If you have a particular interest that you share, search for poems on that topic and if you find one that you both love do consider using it – your guests will know that it reflects you and your interests and it will personalise the ceremony. Do the same for plays, films and TV series (handfasting and ‘Game of Thrones’ for example), song lyrics can also be used as poems – or produce song sheets and get everyone to sing a song!” Remember, anything can be a reading – and it doesn’t have to fit into the ‘wedding reading’ box. “Children’s books often have touching prose on the nature of love – these are often familiar words that will resonate with everyone present,” says Nicola – advice taken by one bride, Lucy. “My best friend read part of ‘Oh! The Places You’ll Go!’ by Dr Seuss. We cut out parts of it, so it was more relevant and, other than some of the guests who were parents, most people didn’t recognise it,” says Lucy. “It was read with so much emotion, it even made some

suggestion. “An increasingly popular option where the couple have many friends who want to be involved is to give each of them a quote on love, life or relationships,” she says. “As discussed during the planning process for the ceremony, each friend stands at an agreed part of the ceremony and reads out their quote; this can be done individually interspersed throughout the ceremony or as a group each standing in turn. This adds a dynamic to the ceremony especially if the other guests are unaware that this will be happening – a love quote flash mob!”

feature | STYLING | ON BURGH ISLAND
Located on a tiny tidal island on Devon’s south coast, the iconic Burgh Island Hotel is one of Europe’s foremost examples of art deco style. Built in 1929 and one of the most popular hotels of the 1930s, you’ll find the hallmarks of art deco everywhere, from the accents of geometry and chrome to the beautifully designed dressing tables and armchairs. A retreat for the notable likes of Agatha Christie and Noel Coward, its spectacular walls have offered privacy, luxury and glittering parties through the decades alongside sweeping views of rolling seas and sandy beaches. “It is the hotel where guests can never be overdressed and you can relax in your own private haven,” says Jennifer Shoubridge of Jennifer Jane Photography, who coordinated this styled shoot alongside stylist Emma Caesar of Emma Caesar Weddings. Almost 100 years since the first bricks were laid – and the art deco movement got into full swing – the shoot showcases how the aesthetic of those glamorous days are every bit as appealing for a modern wedding, but with a fresh, modern edge. “We wanted the shoot to have a real feel of the art deco era, but at the same time feel contemporary,” says Jennifer. “For this reason, we opted for a softer colour palette of mint, white and gold instead of the more familiar black and gold.” A nod to the period’s statement décor, a showstopping floral centrepiece towers over the tablespace, its muted shades adding a modern feel, while lillies and pampas grass replace the famed feathers of the era. The soft, romantic aesthetic continues in the details: the geometric design of the mint and gold stationery echoes in the gold leaf adornment of the cake. Although contemporary, the lace gown oozes vintage glamour and sophistication. “We didn’t want the hair and make-up to be a historical recreation, so we kept the make-up natural, but opted for a little more drama for the eyes,” says Jennifer. “For the hair we combined the finger-wave style of the era and a sophisticated updo.” The bespoke hairpiece – created especially for the shoot with vintage pieces – adds an exquisite finish, catching the light as the sun slips down behind the sea – and the night-time soirée begins.

Choose a venue Decide whether you would like two separate locations for the day – one for the ceremony and one for the reception – or if you would rather have it all in one place. Begin making appointments to look around potential contenders; venues get booked up far in advance so this should be top of your list, along with booking your officiant. Ensure you have a pre-prepared list of questions for your venue before you go to view it (see p.97 for our Venues Guide).
Visualise your day With regards to styling, I advise couples to initially spend some time thinking about their wedding vision. What’s important to you both for your wedding day? What are the emotions you want to evoke? Forget about how it will look for a moment and think about how you want it to feel – for example, fun, heartfelt, romantic, full of surprises, respectful of traditions, or one hell of a party! Think about key words that would capture and define your day, this will help you come up with ideas. If you find it hard to determine what you want, then think about what you definitely don’t want. What have you seen at other weddings that you don’t like? Defining your vision early will make it much easier and avoids those magpie moments that many people fall into, getting everything that catches their eye with nothing pulling the look and feel together.
Find your dream team We are spoilt for choice in the south-west for wedding suppliers. From photographers to cake makers, caterers to musicians, we have such talented and skilled wedding industry professionals at our fingertips, many of which you will find in this beautiful magazine. Choosing those involved in your day is exciting, but make sure you do your research. Don’t be afraid to ask for their portfolios, scroll through their social media channels and request testimonials from their previous clients before you make your decision. It is also nice to get to know the person behind the business; they are going to be involved in one of the most important days of your life, I think it’s such a privilege to be part of that. Get to know each other a little first – not only will this ensure they are the right fit in terms of their work, but it will also make the wedding planning journey much more fun and enjoyable.
Choose your bridal party Take your time and think carefully about this. Not only does each additional bridesmaid or groomsman come with a potential price tag, too many maids can mean too many opinions to consider, especially when it comes to things such as dress selection or hen and stag do planning. Once you have asked someone to be in your bridal party, it is extremely difficult to withdraw your invitation if you change your mind. Let the excitement of being engaged mellow slightly before selecting. And don’t feel you are under obligation to ask someone just because they asked you – friendships and relationships change over time and you may not be as close to the person who you were bridesmaid for three years ago.
Obtain a marriage license You may not need to do this right away, but it should be on your list to get done in good time. In England and Wales, 28 days notice must be given to the register office before a marriage can take place and you have to get married within 12 months of giving notice.

INDIAN SUMMER Leena and Arun’s intimate wedding was a gloriously flower-filled affair in a secluded corner of Devon Together since their teens, Leena and Arun became engaged after a decade of travelling and focusing on their careers. “We organised a driving trip on the west coast of Ireland,” says Leena. “Kerry is one of my favourite spots and I’m so glad it’s part of our story. The proposal took place in a secluded spot on our travels surrounded by nothing but the wild Atlantic sea and rolling Irish hills.” Having first dismissed their initial dream of an English country wedding due to the uncertainty of the British weather, Leena and Arun’s plans for a Goan beach wedding were scuppered by Covid-19, so they returned to their previous idea. “We visited Hayne and were completely sold; it turned out to be everything we were looking for,” says Leena. “The rural setting and views are so peaceful and secluded, and we had exclusive hire so that our 14 guests could all stay on-site, giving our micro wedding an even more relaxed and cosy feel.” The day presented an “eclectic mixture of small, rustic, floral and bohemian with a nod to Asia” theme, which was achieved with a combination of their natural surrounds, the styling vision of Rebecca Marie Weddings, and homages to their Indian heritage including Leena’s outfit, the food and the Bollywood-bright florals. Her gorgeous two-piece lengha design in off-white with antique gold embroidery was completed by elegant bell drop earrings, a jewelled choker necklace and flower crown. Then there was the ultimate accessory – her groom, whose dapper emerald green tweed suit provided the perfect pairing. “My favourite moment of the day was the ‘first look’ with Arun before the ceremony,” reveals Leena. “This was in private away from our guests. We managed to squeeze in a drink together to begin our celebrations. Until that point we had both been in planning mode, a little stressed and anxious about all the details coming together. Once I saw him, I finally felt myself relax.” The floristry was all lovingly grown on-site, from the flower crowns to the bouquet and venue décor, which featured glorious in-season dahlias. “It gave such a cohesion to the whole wedding,” notes Leena. A pre-wedding dinner beautifully set the tone with the rustic candlelit styling that continued in the wedding breakfast décor. “The most striking detail was the incredible suspended floral installation above our dining table,” recalls Leena. “It was even more impressive than we imagined. None of the wedding party will forget dining under those gorgeous flowers.” The sun-spilled ceremony took place in the walled garden and was followed by champagne and canapés framed by the Devonshire countryside. The Asian fusionstyle menu comprised canapés of shredded duck, chicken satay and fishcakes ahead of sharing platters of crispy tofu, chicken gyozas, chicken curry, prawn curry, mini lamb samosas and aubergine kuzi. The semi-naked cake was then served alongside “showstopping” hand-painted macarons, after which followed a relaxed evening of listening to the band while lounging around the firepit and snacking on pizza and s’mores, with sparklers signifying the party’s end. “Try not to be too disappointed if any of your original plans go awry,” says Leena of rolling with the planning punches. “It will force you to look at alternative options, which may even be better than what you had originally planned.”

PURE AND SIMPLE Luci and Alex combined a chilled-out vibe with cosy winter styling for their stripped-back yet chic elopement wedding Meeting through a mutual friend in a nightclub in Birmingham, Luci and Alex fell for each other, and began a romance that ultimately led to an Italian proposal. “Alex booked us a four-day trip to Rome, and on the third day he proposed at the Orange Gardens,” says Luci. “It was completely unexpected.” As they began to plan their wedding, the now-too-familiar tale of Covid-19 pandemic stood in their way. But instead of postponing their big day, Luci and Alex made the decision to bring their wedding date forward. “Covid was actually the reason we chose to get married where and when we did, as there was so much sadness in 2020 that we wanted to bring a bit of happiness to us and the people around us,” says Luci. Bringing their wedding forward three months, the couple decided on a winter elopement, opting for the picturesque venue of north Devon’s Millbrook Estate. “We didn’t have a theme or colour scheme, as we wanted to keep things easy and simple,” says Luci, who adds that she chose her V-neck beaded gown, and Alex his dapper navy suit, “purely based on what we’d feel comfortable in”. It was a case of everyone pitching in to help make the day incredibly special, with flowers being organised by a talented florist friend of Luci’s mother, and their elegant white floral cake made by a family friend. When the day arrived, the couple were greeted with icy and snowy scenes, with sunshine overhead, and a relaxed atmosphere pervading throughout the celebrations. The intimate ceremony was punctuated with lots of laughter and poignant moments, before the couple made the most of the venue’s 32 acres for photographs. Exploring the lakes, wild flower meadows, mature woodland and meeting some of Millbrook Estate’s friendly animals, the sun shone over the glowing newly-weds. “The weather was perfect – very cold and icy but it looked so beautiful for the photos,” says Luci. “The whole day ran very smoothly.” Sitting down to an “out of this world” three-course feast, the winter styling of the venue brought a cosy-luxe vibe, with elements of lush foliage and white rose accents. After their meal, the couple retired to the luxurious accommodation in newly-wedded bliss. “My favourite part was just how intimate the day was,” says Luci. “There was no stress, no pressure; just us.” And when it comes to others planning an elopement wedding, Luci’s advice is as pure and simple as her wedding day was. “Don’t lose sight of what matters,” she says. “People get very caught up in pleasing others instead of remembering what the day is really about.”

SCARLET FEVER Megan and Matt took a Danishinspired warm and laidback approach for their ambient winter wedding featuring burgundy and scarlet accents “We met through a dating app, which matches you with local people who you have crossed paths with,” says Megan. “Our worlds collided at the local post office! Matt did a cheesy line in his wedding speech about me ‘collecting my mail and finding my male, and it being the best package I had ever seen’!” The couple were spending New Year’s Eve together at a cottage in North Wales – “a family holiday haunt of mine that is full of happy memories”, says Megan – when Matt summoned her to the woodshed. “He had scattered hundreds of rose petals, lit candles and spelt out ‘will you marry me?’ with logs on the floor,” she recalls. Picking a date five years to the day of their first meeting, Ash Barton Estate was the charming backdrop to their “cosy, winter hygge” themed wedding. An abundance of fresh greenery helped to set the scene, with tree branches decorated in fairy lights suspended from the ceiling combining with candles, rugs and fur pelts to achieve the look. The tabletops were adorned with a single stem burgundy carnation, with centrepieces made by Megan’s mum comprising wood slices and greenery interwoven with burgundy roses, topped with personalised tea light holders crafted from recycled tins. The central colour scheme of burgundy was also carried in everything from the bridesmaids’ dresses to Matt’s extensive entourage of seven groomsmen and six groomswomen. “Matt wore a grey tweed suit, the guys wore their own suits but had matching burgundy ties, and the girls wore matching jumpsuits and burgundy lipstick,” says Megan, whose stunning lace dress was finished with burgundy berries clipped into her hair and a bouquet featuring burgundy roses and berries with a touch of gypsophila. Having eloped to Las Vegas a few months before to get legally wed by ‘Elvis’ at The Little White Chapel, the couple wanted their Devon wedding ceremony to be as meaningful, personal and individual as possible. “The fact we were already married in the eyes of the law meant we could ask two of our closest friends to be our celebrants. It meant we could have a lot of fun with the ceremony and the atmosphere was relaxed, fun and informal,” says Megan. They opted out of traditional hymns in favour of the congregation singing Starship’s ‘80s classic ‘Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now’, while an old friend from university performed an acoustic guitar session during the drinks reception. “It was a lovely moment watching friends come out of the chapel to see him playing in the courtyard after so many years!” reflects Megan. Following canapés and pub-style nibbles, guests tucked into mains of big pot cider potatoes and local pork sausages rounded off with build-your-own Eton mess, which provided plenty of fuel for the ceilidh dancing that kick-started the evening party. “Really soak up and try to enjoy the whole process, even the stressful moments if you can. The run-up to the wedding is such a lovely time and a chance to really reflect on all the love and good stuff in your life,” says Megan of the value of taking stock. “The day itself is quite overwhelming so try to pause every now and then,” she wisely adds.

BLOOMING BEAUTIFUL Ruth and Leigh used seasonal flowers and a smattering of handmade décor to create a distinctive day full of character at Upton Barn & Walled Garden Ruth and Leigh first met at school at the tender age of 15. “It is crazy how we have changed in the 11 years we have been together, but it has been nice to grow up with each other,” says Ruth. Following their engagement, they set about planning their petal-pretty day at Upton Barn & Walled Garden. “It was the ideal mix between country and rustic, and modern and sleek,” Ruth says. “Everything about it was perfect: the story behind the venue, the family business element, the lovely horses, fairy lights, log burner and, of course, the beautiful walled garden.” Selecting a rich burgundy colour scheme spliced with natural tones and soft pinks for their “autumnal and cosy, as well as elegant” celebrations, Ruth had just one major prerequisite: fabulous floristry. “The inspiration for our colours were mostly flowers; with dahlias being in season this was perfect,” she explains of how the natural, rustic theme was achieved, which also included a plethora of handmade wooden décor and floral additions. Ruth’s dad and Leigh used different types of wood to create table centrepieces named after the kind used, while Leigh handmade all of the signage. Ruth handcrafted much of the décor herself, including signs, place cards and stationery. “We designed the ideas for the table centrepieces and bought or made everything ourselves, then the team at Upton Barn kindly put it all together for us with a sprinkling of petals from our florist. My favourite flowers are sweet peas, which are generally out of season by October, but Gemma sourced some and integrated them into all of the florals throughout the wedding which was so special. She captured the theme and colours beautifully,” adds Ruth. Post–ceremony welcome drinks of peach bellinis and elderflower pressé were enjoyed along with lawn games as everyone mingled. A sumptuous three-course wedding breakfast followed, which featured autumnal vegetable soup and seafood platters to start, mains of goat’s cheese tart and pork belly, and wedding cake – made by Ruth’s mum – along with cream and fresh fruit as the delicious dessert. An evening of dancing, drinks and toasting marshmallows around the firepit ensued, with sparklers signalling the party’s end. Reflecting on the day and offering her advice, Ruth says: “Take your time and enjoy the planning stage. Go with your gut instinct always! If you really want to splash out on something, do it, you won’t regret it. Equally, look at where you can save money and make things unique to you, it is a lot easier than you think. And always ask for help,” she adds. “It is the best feeling in the world to be marrying the person you love, knowing you will be tied forever, with all of the people in your life who are most important to you both,” Ruth adds as a lasting memory. “Everything about the day, from the surroundings and décor to the flowers, was absolutely perfect and we really feel it was everything we wanted it to be and more. We wish we could do it all over again!”

THE SMALL THINGS A lavish summer event for 100 morphed into a winter wedding for six, but that didn’t stop Adam and Darius from achieving the most spectacular of celebrations Six years after they first became a couple, Adam presented Darius with a box from one of his favourite London bakeries, while winding down in their apartment after a busy week at work. “We finished dinner and he told me to open it,” reveals Darius. “It had ‘will you marry me?’ iced onto six delicious cupcakes. I burst into tears and said yes straight away! We celebrated with champagne and started planning right away.” Already their favourite afternoon tea haunt, Hotel Endsleigh was the first venue the couple visited. Beguiled as much by its natural beauty, charm and character as the “friendly and excellent service from all the team”, Adam and Darius picked a late spring/early summer date and created their mood board to match. “Initially it was intended to be an array of spring colours – light pinks, light blues, ivory and deep greens – to mirror the grounds; however, when we finally decided to do a much smaller winter wedding due to Covid-19, we were open to our incredible suppliers surprising us,” says Darius of their altered plans that saw a turnaround of just three days. “The brief was now: take our original plans, make the colours deeper and richer, and we trust it will look amazing! Our suits were not the tailor-made dusty pink and blue planned, but instead replaced for thicker herringbone suits to match the wintry season.” One of the benefits of choosing a place like Hotel Endsleigh is the thought and design that goes into everything, which was behind the couple’s choice of the venue. “Olga Polizzi has designed the rooms with such finesse and attention that you don’t need to cover the walls and ceilings with voile fabric – some are even adorned with original William Morris wallpaper,” says Darius. “You don’t need to do much to dress the tables: a floral masterpiece from Endsleigh’s resident florist, Flowers Et Al, and perhaps some candlesticks and you have an amazing setting you would struggle to replicate if you tried.” Having marked their original date with a small barbecue and lots of champagne, Adam and Darius were feeling primed for their new wedding plans for 30 when the 15-person limit came into effect. “There was a bit of mild panic and a healthy dose of hysteria but we were getting married next week!” laughs Darius. The day was a triumph, featuring an emotional ceremony on the parterre followed by photos, free-flowing champagne and canapés, and a sumptuous dinner. Plumping for a cake for 40 “so we could share it with family so they felt more included in the day even though they couldn’t be with us – plus too much cake isn’t a thing as far as we are concerned!”, Adam and Darius gifted slices of rose and pistachio, and cherry bakewell to their nearest and dearest after the event. The newly-weds also enjoyed a screening of messages of congratulations – “a fantastic end to an amazing day” – waking the next morning for a family breakfast before departing for their minimoon at The Pig at Harlyn Bay. “The wedding we had was small, with just our parents as guests, but in hindsight the best decision that we made. Yes, we were gutted that all of our loved ones couldn’t be there on the day, but we managed to get married at the most amazing venue and it gave us the great excuse to plan a big party for everyone to celebrate when it’s safe to do so,” says Darius in retrospect. “Be bold and spontaneous,” he advises. “If you can leave a few things to creative inspiration, the surprise will be really worth it when you get to see it on the day. And if you want to get married, what really matters is the two of you – just do it,” he adds. “It’s also a great excuse to plan a big party later!”

WINTER WONDERLAND The festive décor, twinkling lights and cosy ambience of Christmas provided the inspiration for Becca and Tom’s yuletide wedding A festive romance turned into something much more meaningful for Becca and Tom, who met at a Christmas party. Fast-forward to a beautiful proposal on a rowing boat in the middle of Slovenia’s Lake Bled, and the couple began planning their wedding – with a festive theme, of course. “We had a cream and green, classic Christmas theme with lots of candles and foliage,” says Becca, of the inspiration for their December wedding. Planning a wedding during the current pandemic, however, meant they had to cut their guest list down from 120 to 15, but Becca and Tom’s positive outlook meant this didn’t dim their excitement. “Actually, a wedding of 15 with your nearest and dearest makes the day feel even more special and surprisingly fun so it’s definitely still worth considering a smaller one, particularly through these uncertain times,” she reflects. With lots of help from Becca’s mum, the couple planned an afternoon ceremony with their very closest friends and family. The couple spent a memorable morning with their bridesmaids and ushers and, as the bridesmaids changed into their glitzy emerald green dresses and Becca into her Justin Alexander gown, the festive sense of occasion was palpable. “My dad seeing me in my dress for the first time was a real standout part of the day for me,” remembers Becca. “He was having a hard time trying not to cry!” What followed was an emotional and poignant ceremony in Rockbeare Manor’s light-filled ceremony room, followed by welcome drinks and canapés as the newly-weds ventured outside for photographs, which prompted their fondest memory of the day. “My favourite moment was when the sun came out for our photos when it had been a cloudy and drizzly morning,” says Becca, with Katherine from Nova Wedding Photography agreeing. “We couldn’t believe our luck when the sun came out for a few minutes!” she says. After a series of heartfelt speeches – “the best man’s speech was very funny with lots of lovely childhood stories,” says Becca – the newly-weds enjoyed an intimate candlelit dinner with their favourite people. The feast comprised a starter of spiced parsnip and butternut squash soup with homemade sourdough bread, a main course of sirloin steak with seasonal vegetables, potato gratin and hand-cut chips, and sticky toffee pudding with clotted cream for dessert. As the drinks flowed into the evening, the couple and their guests enjoyed a four-tier cheese cake, as well as pasties as a nod to Becca’s mum’s Cornish heritage. Although the couple couldn’t have a band due to the Covid-19 rules, they remarked on how little the other restrictions affected their celebrations. “The day was perfect and how we imagined it!” says Becca. “You also get to spend more quality time with your guests.” And as for general advice, the happy-go-lucky bride and groom have some wise words for those who are planning their own weddings. “At the end of the day, a wedding is about the love you have for each other above all else! Try not to stress over the little things and enjoy every moment.”

A CLASS ACT Shanice and Stephen didn’t let a little rain dampen their timelessly elegant country house wedding After meeting through Stephen’s sister and falling for each other, Shanice was in no doubt about his feelings for her after an elaborate week of surprises. Organising everything from surprise dinners with friends, manicures, tours of her favourite places and special moments with her family, as well as a letter hand-delivered each day on the themes of spirituality, family, friendship and fun, the week culminated in Stephen’s proposal on a bridge over a lake. “There were some flowers and a note that had a Bible verse in it about finding a good wife, and then a message saying ‘I’ve found what I’m looking for’,” says Shanice. “Stephen got down on one knee, said a heartfelt speech and asked me to marry him… at which point two of my cousins jumped out of the bush to take pictures!” Deciding they wanted a “black tie wedding on an English country estate”, Deer Park Country House ticked all their elegance-meets-romance boxes, and they set to work on a theme of soft pinks, white and gold, with the help of stylist and planner Fern Godfrey. “She brought our vision to life perfectly and was the perfect calming presence throughout a stressful planning process – in the middle of a global pandemic,” says Shanice. Due to the pandemic, their plans had to change a few times, including scaling back from 160 guests to 30, which meant that the day was very relaxed. On the day, Shanice, Stephen and their wedding parties enjoyed a quiet morning before gorgeous music from celloist Jay Emme marked the beginning of the beautiful outdoor ceremony – and marked Shanice’s most treasured part of the day. “My favourite moment was the ceremony. The heavens opened, which was awful timing but somehow it made everyone pull together – the wonderful pastor even managed to spin it into a positive during his sermon! Even though it rained it was so personal and heartfelt and made everything worth it,” says Shanice. “The Deer Park team were on hand with umbrellas, and then plenty of towels and hairdryers once the ceremony was over. Everyone dried off and then enjoyed canapés and drinks in the house with Stephen’s carefully curated playlists in the background.” Commenting on another special moment, Shanice says: “‘Jumping the broom’ stood out to us, as my sister-in-law read a beautiful introduction, and it was so nice to bring something in that has such a strong cultural meaning.” As the skies cleared, the guests were able to venture outside, before the newly-weds danced their way back indoors “to rapturous applause” ahead of dinner. “We wanted to create a magical atmosphere for dinner, as this was where guests would really celebrate the day together,” says Shanice. “With lots of candlelight and an abundance of blooms, the scene was set for hours of laughter and happy tears while almost every guest made a speech. It was unbelievably special, and that intimacy is a big plus to having a smaller wedding.” What followed was an “utterly delicious” three-course feast comprising home-cured salmon to start, tomato tarte tatin for the main course and a dark chocolate torte with salted caramel ice-cream for dessert. Guests were also treated to a semi-naked cake, then a games evening in the drawing room and wood-fired pizza as the evening drew to a close. “Make a list of everything you want, set a timescale for each thing and try and stick to it,” says Shanice as advice for couples in the midst of planning. “Book suppliers early to avoid disappointment and I would advise anyone to get a wedding planner. Our wedding wouldn’t have been what it was without Fern, she was our first and best investment.”

Surpise, surpise! Think outside the box when it comes to entertainment - and maybe concoct a memorable surprise for your guests. This could be a pre-rehearsed dance incorporating your bridesmaids and groomsmen, a surprise performance roaming the tables during dinner or an interactive evening band. Maisie
Picture this. Dot photos of yourselves around the reception showing the story of your relationship. Instead of table names, perhaps choose images of you both on holiday, or places that mean something to you. Jessica
It’s all in the detail. If you embrace monogramming, customise guests’ napkins with their initials. This makes for a really lovely touch and looks beautiful. Jessica

Sign up. Instead of a guest book, have a canvas or a beautiful backdrop that your guests can sign personal messages onto. This gives you the choice to then frame and hang it, which will be much more visible than a book! Jessica

Favourite favours. Guest favours are an ideal place to bring in personal touches. Perhaps there is a cause that is close to your heart, such as ecology, in which case gifting wild flower seeds would be perfect. Jessica
Order of the day. Don’t be afraid to change the order of the day if you want to. If you’re morning people, you might fancy getting married in the morning and serving a cooked breakfast for your wedding feast, or if you’re night owls, why not have a candlelit evening ceremony? Rebecca

Love letters. Write a handwritten note to each guest explaining how much they mean to you and why you wanted to share your special day with them, for them to read as they’re enjoying their meal. Jessica

Walk your walk. The most important way to personalise your day is to follow your own rules. If you want to walk down the aisle with your mum and dad by your side, or even your dog even, then go
Speak up. If you’re not a fan of traditional speeches, why not incorporate traditions from other cultures? At Swedish weddings, they often don’t have speeches; instead anybody can get up at any time, and say something personal about the happy couple. Jessica
Wonderful weekend. If you’re having a multi-day celebration, plan some events for the day before or after your wedding. You could arrange a scavenger hunt where guests have to answer questions about you both to find places and prizes, host a movie night showing your favourite film, or how about an en masse yoga class? Jessica Making music. Consider your playlist for the day carefully, and ensure you include lots of songs that mean something to you both. If you’re lucky enough to be a musician then don’t be scared to show off your talent and perhaps write your own first dance. Rebecca Signature drink. Get creative and design your own bespoke cocktail to serve at the reception. Not only is this fun for you to make, it’s a lovely personal touch for your guests. Jessica Fan mail. If you’re having an outdoor or summer ceremony, create personalised fans to keep your guests cool. The decoration could be an illustration that reflects the decor, or colour-match it to the rest of the aesthetic of your day. Jessica Food glorious food. Street food, sharing boards and woodfired platters are great for showcasing your personalities and favourite flavours, while encouraging interaction between guests.
