Minimum size

This issue, our features range from where to start with planning a wedding and grappling with budgets to choosing your rings, entertainment ideas and coast of North Devon, where wintery hues meet shimmering dresses, to a country idyll in the south styled with luxe boho vibes. And, in the heart of Exeter, a blend of crisp whites and luxe blooms looks achingly romantic against the timeworn walls of St Nicholas Priory.

To make sure that the logo is always readable and recognisable the Carbon Balanced Paper marque should not be reproduced smaller than 20mm high.

When using the logo at minimum size, be careful to ensure that the website address and registration number is still legible if reversed out of a coloured background or image.

Exclusion zone

Then there’s the weddings. From Naomi and Aidan’s intimate boho wedding at Brickhouse Vineyard to Chloe and David’s autumnal celebration at Powderham Castle and Veronika and Danny’s elegant wedding at Pynes House, each wedding is filled with so much joy, love and personality – not to mention Devon at its most beautiful.

The exclusion zone (indicated by the solid line) is the minimum area around the Carbon Balanced logo that must remain clear of typography or any other graphic device.

The formula for the exclusion zone is shown here and applies to all sizes of logo reproduction. It is calculated by using twice the height of the ‘T’ in Trust and varies in direct proportion to the size at which the logo is reproduced.

I’M ENGAGED! NOW WHAT?

Wedding planner Jenny Granlund of Jenny Wren Weddings & Events shares her top tips for kicking off your wedding planning journey

Congratulations on your engagement! Before you dive headfirst into wedding planning, don’t forget to take a moment to really savour being engaged. Revel in the beauty of your just-engaged bubble, just the two of you, before the flurry of questions begin and decisions have to be made.

Let’s face it, aside from experienced events planners, not many of us know where to begin with a challenge like planning a wedding. We’ve enlisted expert wedding planner Jenny Granlund of Jenny Wren Weddings & Events (jennywrens.com) to help you get started...

Take out wedding insurance

We advise all of our couples do this straight away. It might not be the most fun element of wedding planning, but you never know what is around the corner so make sure you are covered.

Break it down

If you’re planning your day yourselves, I would advise you to break your planning down and give yourself dates of when to have things done by. That way these milestones will give you a real sense of achievement and you won’t feel so overwhelmed about how much you have to do. Instead, you will have a clear vision of where you are at, what else is to be done and when you plan to do it.

Decide on a budget

Before you begin researching your dream wedding, figure out the budget you have for your day. No decisions can be made until you know how much money you have to work with. Seriously think about what your limit is and speak to family members early on if they have said they may contribute. This is likely to feel awkward to bring up, but it is important to do before you begin, so you can then make realistic plans and not get carried away. Once you have added any contributions from family to your own money for the wedding, allocate it sensibly to all of the elements (for example: venue, dress, flowers). If you have a wedding planner, they will be able to guide you on this. There are many tools online that can help too and remember to leave 10% as a contingency to give room for changes.

Create an Excel spreadsheet with two columns – predicted and actual – so you can keep track of everything that has been spent. If you are anything like me, you will enjoy watching the numbers change as you add things in, and it is so satisfying when things come in under budget!

Draw up a guest list

Determining your guest list early is essential, as it will have an impact on so many of the things that follow on (size of venue, for example). The guest list can spin out of control easily, so it is important to keep on top of it from the start. Begin drawing up your list together and have some structure to it. Separate it into three categories: people you couldn’t bear not being there, people you’d really like to attend but are not critical, and the people you’d enjoy having but could eliminate if necessary.

Lots of people are likely to have an opinion on who you should and shouldn’t invite – listen and consider their viewpoint, but always keep in mind your own desires first and foremost. If your wedding is being funded by your parents, they may feel they can invite certain people, such as old friends who your partner may never have met, taking up the place of one of his or her friends. You need to reach a compromise, and you may also find that, once people have received their invitation, some may ask if they can bring extra people, such as a partner you may not have met. An easy way to ensure it is clear concerning how many guests the invitation is for is to add this line to the invitation: “We kindly

reserve one/two seats in your honour.”

Choose a venue

Decide whether you would like two separate locations for the day – one for the ceremony and one for the reception – or if you would rather have it all in one place. Begin making appointments to look around potential contenders; venues get booked up far in advance so this should be top of your list, along with booking your officiant. Ensure you have a pre-prepared list of questions for your venue before you go to view it (see p.99 for our Venues Guide).

Visualise your day

With regards to styling, I advise couples to initially spend some time thinking about their wedding vision. What’s important to you both for your wedding day? What are the emotions you want to evoke? Forget about how it will look for a moment and think about how you want it to feel – for example, fun, heartfelt, romantic, full of surprises, respectful of traditions, or one hell of a party!

Think about key words that would capture and define your day, as this will help you come up with ideas. If you find it hard to determine what you want, then think about what you definitely don’t want. What have you seen at other weddings that you don’t like? Defining your vision early will make it much easier and avoids those magpie moments that many people fall into, getting everything that catches their eye with nothing pulling the look and feel together.

Find your dream team

We are spoilt for choice in Devon for wedding suppliers. From photographers to cake makers, caterers to musicians, we have such talented and skilled wedding industry professionals at our fingertips, many of which you will find in this beautiful magazine.

Choosing those involved in your day is exciting, but make sure you do your research. Don’t be afraid to ask for their portfolios, scroll through their social media channels and request testimonials from their previous clients before you make your decision. It is also nice to get to know the person behind the business; they are going to be involved in one of the most important days of your life, I think it’s such a privilege to be part of that. Get to know each other a little first – not only will this ensure they are the right fit in terms of their work, but it will also make the wedding planning journey much more fun and enjoyable.

Choose your bridal party

Take your time and think carefully about this. Not only does each additional bridesmaid or groomsman come with a potential price tag, but too many maids can mean too many opinions to consider, especially when it comes to things such as dress selection or hen and stag do planning. Once you have asked someone to be in your bridal party, it is extremely difficult to withdraw your invitation if you change your mind. Let the excitement of being engaged mellow slightly before selecting. And don’t feel you are under obligation to ask someone just because they asked you –friendships and relationships change over time and you may not be as close to the person who you were bridesmaid for three years ago.

Obtain a marriage licence

You may not need to do this right away, but it should be on your list to get done in good time. In England and Wales, 28 days notice must be given to the register office before a marriage can take place and you have to get married within 12 months of giving notice.

However and whenever you’re thinking of getting married, there’s a host of ways to do it to suit your vision. Whether you’re living by the rule book or wanting to write your own, couples can design a day to reflect their love story and stage something reflective of the times by picking a mode to match, from the multitude of ways to say (or not say!) ‘I do’ that are also oh-so ‘you’.

Legally speaking…

First off, don’t forget the legal requirements of entering matrimony. To get married or form a civil partnership in England and Wales (with differing rules for Scotland and Northern Ireland), from 27th February 2023 you must both be 18 years of age, not closely related nor already married or in a civil partnership. Two witnesses must be present at the wedding.

Documents required include proof of name, age, any name changes, nationality and address. Additional paperwork such as details of where and when you intend to marry must also be submitted – alongside (if applicable) a decree absolute or final order, entry visa and death certificate of your formal partner. Non-UK nationals will need to check any visa requirements, and allow additional time for the notice to be processed.

A notice period of at least 29 days must be given by signing a legal statement to say you intend to get married or form a civil partnership at your local register office (the district of which you must have lived in for at least seven days), and the ceremony must be completed within 12 months of submitting this notice.

Civil Marriage

This is a non-religious legally binding marriage ceremony performed by two local authority officials called a superintendent registrar and a registrar, at a register office, registration office or venue approved by the local council. It can feature readings, music and songs, by prior agreement, but cannot include any religious or spiritual content. Two witnesses must be present.

Civil Partnership

A civil partnership legally recognises the relationship between two people and, though isn’t defined as a marriage, does involve similar responsibilities and rights such as tax benefits, inheritance and pensions. It takes place in front of a registrar and doesn’t involve a ceremony or the exchanging of vows (though both can be requested), but simply the signing of the civil partnership document in front of two witnesses. Civil partnerships are open to both same-sex and opposite-sex couples, and they are referred to as civil partners, rather than husband and wife.

Civil Partnership Conversion

Same-sex (but not opposite-sex) couples can convert a civil partnership into a marriage in England or Wales by attending an appointment at a register office to sign a ‘conversion into marriage’ declaration in front of a superintendent registrar, who must also sign the declaration (which you can also say to each other). A marriage certificate is then issued, dated with the date of the original civil partnership. Should you choose to follow the conversion with a ceremony (with or without guests), you can do so at a register office, approved premises or religious building where same-sex marriages are allowed.

Religious Ceremony

A religious marriage ceremony can take place at any Church of England church or registered religious building and must be presided over by a vicar or authorised person, such as a minister, who will need to ensure the marriage document is correctly

produced, signed and posted to the local registration service for the marriage to be registered. The ceremony must take the form of the rites and ceremonies of the Religious denomination in which you are marrying and will include some form of prescribed vows. Same-sex couples can get married in a religious building if it has been registered for them to do so.

Sequel Wedding

Sequel weddings are a two-part event whereby couples have a small ceremony or intimate wedding followed by a larger second ceremony or celebration at a later date (only one can be legally recognised). This can take the form of an elopement, virtual or micro wedding followed by a grand-scale sequel the following year.

Celebratory Ceremony

This is a way for couples to celebrate their marriage with friends and family when and wherever they want. It is free of any legal restraints and can be conducted by a professional celebrant or a friend. Your status won’t alter since the service isn’t legally binding, but it does give total freedom and flexibility with regards to venue and content, and can include traditional elements such as vow and ring exchanges and readings, or anything else you personally desire, from promises to rituals such as handfasting, a sand ceremony or a ring warming. Most couples will have a simple legal ceremony either just before or after the celebratory ceremony. Professional celebrants work with the couple to personalise the ceremony in its entirety and spend time meeting with and getting to know the couple. The celebrant will then write and conduct a ceremony which is completely unique and tailored to the couple and reflects their wishes. There are two types of professional celebrant: independent celebrants and humanists. A humanist celebrant is a member of Humanists UK and follows their philosophy and will not usually allow any religious or spiritual references in their ceremonies. An independent celebrant is led by the wishes of the couple in the ceremony content and will include religious or spiritual references and work with couples of any or differing faiths or non, to create a ceremony which is meaningful for all, they will also work with faith leaders.

Pagan Handfasting

The ancient pagan-inspired marriage ritual is usually performed by an independent celebrant or fellow pagan and involves a couple’s hands being bound with ribbon or cord to signify their union. Handfasting is not legally recognised on its own as a form of marriage. Holding hands so that the pulse points or wrists are touching, the ribbons or cords are looped around the couples’ joined hands whilst they say their vows and promises. The colours of the ribbons or cords can be accorded meanings and are chosen specifically by the couple. Family members or guests can be included in the ceremony by coming forward to place the ribbon or cord over the couples hands. Further layers of meaning can be added by invoking the blessings of the cardinal points and elements if wished.

Vow Renewal

However you originally married, renewing your vows is a way to celebrate your marriage and relationship. Couples can choose to periodically renew their vows every decade (or even annually!), at milestone anniversaries, after having children (who they can ask to host the reaffirmation), or to reinforce their love and commitment during turbulent times. It can occur anywhere from your home to a poignant outside space or building or a traditional house of worship - and, not being legal, can be led by a friend or a celebrant.

By breaking it down into the ten core components, you can virtually design your own blueprint of a gown, arming yourself with a vision that fits your individual sense of style and body type while also keeping a keen eye on the latest trends that might take your fancy.

The shape of your dress is one of the most important factors, ensuring the most comfortable and flattering fit to help you look and feel your best. Bodice

The bodice is key in defining the overall silhouette and look. Firstly, think about your strap type (such as spaghetti, halterneck, strapless), then the bodice shape, such as scooped, sweetheart, jewel, off-the-shoulder, bateau/boat, deep plunging V-neck, high and square necklines. Sample them all to see what best suits your frame while experimenting with the latest trends, which currently include corsets, asymmetrical and mock necks.

Fabric

As far as your fabric is concerned, ask yourself: is it fit for purpose? If you’re hosting a winter wedding, then a barely-there chiffon gown might not be in keeping with the season or aesthetic. Similarly, a heavy satin or multi-layered frock might swamp your frame and style if it’s a breezy beach wedding you favour. From the fit to the feel, check that you’re well supported, comfortable and able to move while deliberating between tulle, silk, lace, satin, taffeta, chiffon, crepe, organza, velvet and charmeuse. As part of the cottagecore movement, cotton and crocheted styles are on the rise, while sheer (and nude) fabrics are also en vogue.

Depending on the dress and time of year in which you’re tying the knot, you may opt out of sleeves entirely. Strapless ballgowns tend to leave the arms and décolletage bare, but a bolero, long-sleeved top, detachable sleeves or cape can be added for a more transformational, layered look. However, sleeves are still reigning supreme on the runway, particularly anything with volume such as the bell, balloon and puff varieties. Cap, flutter and long, sheer sleeves present a subtler alternative, while trumpet, lace and off-the-shoulder versions give an instant injection of ethereal romance. Add floral embroidery, beadwork, sequins, pearls or appliqués for extra style points.

Waist

High, wasp and dropped flapper styles, concealed via empire lines, and cinched with corsetry – the waist continues to be reimagined with every bridal collection. Embellish with a belt, flossing, ribbon or cut-outs, and expose with bridal separates like a waist-skimming skirt and crop top. Blue is one of the biggest shades du jour, with blush, peach, lemon and nude tones still gracing collections the world over. Try to match your skin shade (e.g. dark, olive, fair) and undertone (warm, cool or neutral) with the dress’ colour – and note the subtleties between champagne, oyster, pale gold and silver tinted gowns. For example, yellowtoned ivory gowns tend to suit fair skin well, while creamier coloured frocks work better with medium shades of skin. Brides with olive skin pair perfectly with traditional white gowns, while darker complexions are complemented by most dress colours, including brights. And don’t forget to think about the venue, season, décor and the shades of the groom’s and bridesmaids’ ensembles to ensure a harmonious look for the entire wedding party and scene.

Accessories

When it comes to accessories, brides are spoiled for choice. The main risk is overloading your outfit and making everything appear too fussy. So start with the dress and add features from there. And, while the experience of finding or designing a piece of jewellery together that will symbolise your union – and remain emotionally and physically attached to you thereafter – is incredibly exciting, there’s a lot to consider. We’ve enlisted some expert advice to help you get started.

A question of style

Where to start with choosing an engagement ring? “Have a look at the jewellery your partner already wears to get an idea of what style they like. Think about their personality and the clothes they wear,” advises designer-maker Stephanie Stevens (stephaniestevensjewellery. co.uk). “Perhaps create a mood board of rings you like, and you will see a certain theme start to emerge. Always go with your gut: clients normally go back to what they picked first.”

Once you’ve thought about style preferences, it’s important to consider your budget to help you manage your expectations and achieve your vision.

“Think about your budget – not just for the engagement ring, but also for down the line,” highlights Janie Wolverson at Erin Cox (erincox. co.uk). “If you are buying an engagement ring in 18ct gold then ideally you will need a

Next, it’s time to consider what metal you like. Different metals have different properties, ranging from silver (the weakest) to platinum (the strongest). Matching the metal strength of your engagement and wedding rings is important to ensure that one doesn’t wear the other down.

“You also need to consider lifestyle,” advises Janie. “Will the ring be worn all the time? Is the person wearing the ring very practical, or does he/she have a manual job? Your jeweller will help guide you to the right sort of stone, metal and settings to suit how you will wear the ring.”

And if you still can’t quite decide, Janie has the perfect solution. “Erin likes to mix metal colours and so it may be that the ring shank is one colour and the setting a different one. Erin also creates a unique ‘camo gold’ where yellow and white gold is melted together. This is a great option if you wear a range of different coloured metal jewellery and also ensures the ring stays modern with the ever-changing fashions.”

Durability is the most important aspect of choosing an engagement or wedding ring for heritage goldsmith Isabella Day from The Remarkable Goldsmiths (theremarkablegoldsmiths.co.uk). “Because it is hammered to shape, hand forged metal is much harder and the metal is more consolidated than anything that is cast, either from a wax model from an original design or a cad rendition,” she explains. “Cast metal is softer and more porous so it’s nice for occasional wear but for wedding and engagement rings you really want to make sure it’s been hand forged and rolled. Every one of our bespoke engagement and wedding rings is made like this.”

Isabella has a word of caution where it comes to plating. “Don’t choose white gold if it is plated. Check with your goldsmith - if the alloy is good, it shouldn’t need plating,” she says. “Your rings should be the colour you want them to be without it. There will, however, be different costs involved as some are more expensive so don’t be afraid to ask for several quotes.”

By discussing the details and sampling a range of styles with your jeweller, you’ll gain a better understanding of what looks and feels best for you (and your budget),

from the metal to the band width and ring shape.

Another consideration is the pairing of your engagement and wedding rings, as Stephanie explains. “If you have an engagement ring, you have something to work with and to make the wedding ring fit perfectly alongside it. Think about where you need a curve, and if you would like diamonds or other stones set in the band to make them match the ones in the engagement ring.”

“If you don’t have a ring to sit alongside then you can have whatever you want,” she continues. “The main thing to think about would be the shaping of the band – this will link to your personality and what design best suits you. Then you can think of different ways to make it unique like adding engraving, stones and textures.”

Hot rocks

Once you’ve decided on your metal and shape, it’s time to consider whether you wish to incorporate stones into your design.

Selecting something personal to you can help to make the ring your own – perhaps by incorporating your birthstone or a gem with a meaningful colour – while also maximising its visual impact.

Again, think about how the gem will wear, as well as appear. “Erin loves to use naturally coloured stones, including diamonds and sapphires, in engagement rings as they are hard-wearing and durable for jewellery which is going to be worn every day,” explains Janie. “These stones can come in a range of golden tones as well as oranges, pinks, blues and greens. Coloured stones are often teamed with white diamonds either as a trilogy or by having diamonds down each shoulder.”

Remember to discuss your ideas to see if your jeweller can help you find a practical solution. “People often want an emerald in their engagement ring; however, they are very delicate, meaning they are not ideal for everyday wear. We often suggest alternative green stones such as sapphires or garnets, which are more suited to daily wear,” explains Janie.

“Personalised wedding rings will always be popular. Engraving or having secret stones set inside the band conveys a special meaning to the wearer.”

While diamonds remain the perennial best friend of brides and grooms the world over, don’t feel you have to choose one. “A coloured ethical sapphire can be easily traced and come in rainbow colours; even better they hold their value and are worth far more in the long run,” says Isabella.

If your heart is set on diamonds, Janie has some words of advice. “We would always recommend buying quality over quantity,” she says. “Buy the best quality diamond you can afford, even if it that means going for a smaller size. The clarity of the stone will be far superior and it will really twinkle – often making it seem bigger than it is.”

Many jewellers’ signature making processes will imbue extra meaning, such as Justin’s sandcasting technique, which is most commonly used to reinvent pre-existing pieces. “If you have any heirloom materials, we can remodel them into your wedding rings, and incorporate any existing or new gemstones into the design,” explains Jamila.

Something personal

When it comes to personalising your rings, there’s a host of options to increase the bespoke factor. “There are the finer details such as choosing a beach sand for your ring to be cast in, or the hardwood to be inlaid,” says Jamila. You could pick the cove where you became engaged or the tree in the garden of your first home together.

“We can also engrave the inside of your ring with a personal message, date or fingerprint – to name but a few options!” she adds.

“Personalised wedding rings will always be popular,” agrees Janie. “Engraving or having secret stones set inside the band conveys a special meaning to the wearer. Erin reworks a lot of jewellery, using sentimental gold or stones for additional meaning.”

Your budget will help anchor your plans so you have some idea of what is and isn’t possible, regardless of how many metres of spotty oilcloth and mix-andmatch jam jars you may own. Parents may well offer financial gifts to help with the cost of the wedding day, but this shouldn’t be a green light for them to completely take over organising the day they want. If you don’t need any help financially, it might be wise to sit them down before plans escalate and explain that

the wedding day you want isn’t in need of financial input – but explain what the day means to you and how you see your plans evolving.

Where on earth…

Location is also a biggie. Perhaps the glade you played in as a child is now a thriving community or on the side of an A road? The people you promised way back when that they’d be by your side as you said your vows; the friends you may have lost touch with over the years; the new family you are merging with. How do they all fit into your dream bijou bash in your local Michelin-starred restaurant? We all make promises – to ourselves and our loved ones, both vocally and unspoken – regarding life occasions. Family and friendship bonds can come with quiet expectation of all-inclusivity, but what if those nearest and dearest don’t fit into your newly acquired plans? What if you’re desperate for a celebration abroad but the costs associated with transporting both sides of the family to a ceremony overlooking the Balinese rice fields just aren’t feasible, or an elopement is the order of the day for you both? “Don’t be afraid to settle on a plan and merge your family and friends into it, rather than to try and shape your day into the day that suits other people,” advises Kate, a recently hitched bride.

If party size is an issue, why not consider a post-ceremony party at a different time and location. While traditionally wedding receptions follow the ceremony, you can separate the two and get the legalities done before the party if you have your heart set on a wedding abroad or a location that simply doesn’t suit your guest numbers. This allows you to enjoy the intimacy of the ceremony, while also giving the time and space for a good old celebration with family and friends.

Style it out

Weddings can often elicit serious feelings of nostalgia in our nearest and dearest, and heartfelt gifts and tributes can be a wonderful and generous gesture. But what if the hand-stitched veil that’s been passed down through generations of your family just doesn’t suit the above-the-knee shift you have fallen in love with and would look dazzling topped off with a birdcage fascinator? Think of ways to utilise any gestures that you would love to incorporate into your day but aren’t on your really-really-want list. How about displaying any treasured pieces that are gifted to you? Smaller items like jewellery can easily and discreetly be incorporated into your outfit, perhaps sewn inside, or even framed and placed on tables. For larger items like dresses and veils, we love the idea of a mannequin’s dummy as décor somewhere within your venue space, so those meaningful pieces are still a special part of your day.

Personal taste

When it comes to the menu, wedding sustenance ranges from the minuscule (canapé spoons) to the gigantic (hog roast), so choosing your flavour, without compromise, should be fairly easy. You may need to compromise for young children and elderly guests – particularly if mobility is an issue – as queuing at festival-style vans may not be conducive to a recent hip replacement. But don’t forgo flavour when you can incorporate your wants with your guests’ needs. Why can’t festival-style food be served at tables, for example, or if champagne and oysters sets your hearts aflutter, include a child-friendly alternative in the same seafood theme, like mini fish finger sandwiches or fish and chips in cones.

Most importantly, don’t be afraid to have the wedding day you want and try to discuss alternatives where you can. At the heart of any marriage is the couple and, if you can begin married life the way you really want, your guests won’t be able to help falling in love with your day, your way!

Your wedding ceremony should be the standout moment of your day. From the rituals to the readings, make yours unforgettable with this expert advice

It’s all too easy to get caught up in planning the wedding reception, whether it’s choosing the cocktails, designing the cake or picking the playlist – but don’t overlook what should be the main event of the day: the ceremony.

While many guests traditionally used to look forward to the formalities being over so ties could be loosened and champagne swilled, the ceremony is increasingly emerging as the standout moment of the day, for guests as much as the newlywedded couple. This is thanks to a greater focus on celebrating the personalities and loves of the couple: rich in meaning and wrapped in the words, sounds and people that are dear to them, a modern wedding ceremony can be as

engaging, inventive and unique to you as you wish it to be.

We’ve enlisted independent celebrant Sabine Smith of Perfect Day Ceremonies (perfectdayceremonies. co.uk) to offer some inspiration for planning a wowworthy ceremony.

The venue

It’s easy to see why ceremonies officiated by independent celebrants are becoming so popular. “Your ceremony can take place anywhere you like if you work with an independent celebrant. We love to officiate ceremonies in unusual places as well as more traditional settings,” explains Sabine. From woodland

glade or craggy clifftop to stately home, rustic barn or even your parents’ back garden, you can choose the location that stirs your heartstrings, but do bear in mind that the ceremony won’t be legally binding, so you will have to also arrange a civil ceremony at a licensed venue.

“As celebrants, we are happy to work with your choice of venue, wherever it may be and at what time of the day or day of the week you want to celebrate. The choice is yours and we love to go the extra mile for our couples,” continues Sabine.

Once you’ve decided on your dream ceremony setting, think about the mood you’d like to create and

the experience from your guests’ perspective, whether it’s framing the view with a stunning floral display, positioning the seating to overlook the best vantage point or choosing the right tent to bring the outdoors in. Consider the mood you’d like to create and how you can bring a sense of ‘you’ to the setting.

The music

The soundtrack to your ceremony offers a key opportunity to bring a bespoke and brilliantly ambient dimension to proceedings. From acoustic guitar, a string quartet or a harpist to a gospel choir, male voice choir, performances from family and friends and even surprise musicians hidden in the congregation, there’s a plethora of options – just ensure they strike a personal chord.

“Walking into the ceremony to a piece of music that means a lot to you as a couple can be very powerful and can set the mood for what is to come,” says Sabine. “The lyrics of a song might resonate with you in a special way and can also be used in the ceremony script to reflect your feelings about the music you have chosen.”

Think about your favourite songs and arrange the performance to suit the atmosphere or venue; for example, you might ask a harpist to perform your favourite rock song or a guitarist to strum your favourite film soundtrack.

“Music can also be used to bring everyone in the congregation together at the beginning of the ceremony by performing a group song,” suggests Sabine. “This works really well after the declaration of commitment from the family and friends to support you during the years of marriage to come.” A collective performance is a fun and memorable way to celebrate your union – but don’t forget to provide lyrics.

Also remember to consider your exit music. “The music to walk out of the ceremony is equally important,” she says. “You walked in as

individuals and you are walking out as a couple. The exit song can reflect your dreams and your expectations for your future as a couple.”

The love story

Relating the story of your love should be amongst the most heartfelt moments of the day. “This is the favourite part of the ceremony for every celebrant. This is the bit where we find out how you found each other and your journey so far,” says Sabine. “Everyone’s story of how they came to find love is unique and special and the celebrant will take great care to tell your story.” From the moment you met and that hilarious first date story to the challenges you’ve faced and adventures you’ve been on together, this is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to share in the joy of your togetherness and the lifelong promises you’re about to make.

“Your celebrant will make sure that you have full editorial control over the story,” says Sabine. “The story might reveal things the congregation did not know before and I hope it will make you smile and feel all warm inside to hear again how it all began.”

The readings

The readings offer another opportunity to sprinkle personality unto your ceremony and communicate something significant about your relationship. “Using readings which are personal to you can help to create a ceremony that reflects you as a couple and your journey,” says Sabine.

The most important thing is to select a reading you both love. “You do not have to be good at poetry or write your own to make this part personal. Your celebrant can help you to find poems or readings that reflect you as a couple and which will feel right for you,” she advises.

You might choose an excerpt from a poem or book, song lyrics or movie quotes; it might even be love letters or emails you’ve exchanged over the years. Whether you opt for something sweet, funny, profound or deeply romantic, just ensure it feels true to your relationship and your style of ceremony – and choose someone who is confident to read it.

The traditions

While the wedding industry has seen huge change over recent years, many couples still like to weave some tradition into proceedings – and a ceremony conducted by an independent celebrant allows you to include the religious, spiritual or cultural elements you wish. “Using cultural or religious traditions is the part of the ceremony where you can be most creative. It is a lovely tradition for the father of the bride or a family member to walk the bride down the aisle and this is something a lot of couples like to use to start the ceremony,” explains Sabine. “Why not ask your celebrant to create family commitment statements that can be read out at the end or the beginning and the congregation can answer in unison to show their love and support for the couple? You do not have to be religious to add religious readings to make the ceremony extra special.”

The vows

From selecting your vows to choosing something modern to writing your own, there’s a series of options to ensure this hugely important moment is full of meaning, personality and emotion.

“Promises and vows have been part of traditional wedding ceremonies for hundreds of years, and you have to repeat the traditional vows during your registry office ceremony to make it a legal ceremony. However, during a celebrant-led ceremony you are encouraged to create your own personal vows to reflect your relationship and your journey so far,” says Sabine. “Your celebrant will be happy to assist you in the process of creating your own vows.”

Once you’ve decided on or penned the perfect vows for you, practise saying them aloud. And, on the day, try and look at each other as you make your lifelong promises.

The symbolic rituals

There are other elements you can add to your ceremony to make it your own, while enriching the experience with an extra layer of meaning and unity.

“I love nothing more than creating special memories for the couples and their families and friends, and this includes designing and using symbolic rituals which reflect them as a couple or a family,” says Sabine. “A symbolic ritual has a very personal meaning and can take centre stage. Couples can discuss how it could work for them with their celebrant.”

Popular rituals include a sand ceremony (the couple pours sand from separate vessels into a single one to symbolise the two people joining together in marriage), handfasting (the hands are tied together

to symbolise the binding of two lives), ring warming (the rings are warmed with a wish, prayer or good thoughts for the couple by each guest) and the lighting of a unity candle (the lighting of one large candle from two smaller candles to represent the merging of two families).

The family and friends

Weddings are a celebration of togetherness – both as a couple and as a community of the dearest people in your lives. “Including your friends and family members in the ceremony will add something extra special to the day,” advises Sabine. “Children can take centre stage as a ring bearer or they could read a poem or an excerpt from a book. Some family members or friends could contribute to your day with a meaningful reading or a poem or even share an anecdote from your childhood or adulthood.” Perhaps you have a musical brother, a wordsmith sister or your dad sings in a male voice choir? Tap into your family and friends’ passions to add a stirring sense of togetherness and a celebration of all the loves in your lives.

From the rituals to the readings, whatever you decide on, remember to stay true to yourselves and look forward to a ceremony brimming with overwhelming happiness and love, which feel oh-so perfectly ‘you’.

Before you get caught up in the whirlwind of wedding planning, it’s essential to set a budget. Here are some top tips for planning a wedding that suits your vision as well as your bank balance

Whether you’re feeling the pinch, unsure exactly how to budget for everything, or keen to cut down on costs and waste while still achieving a beautiful and personal day, when it comes to wedding planning: money matters. According to the National Wedding Survey by Hitched.co.uk, the average cost of a UK wedding stood at £17,300 in 2021 and, with the projected rate of inflation, this cost is set to jump in 2023. While expenditure continues to increase year-on-year, the number of couples seeking to reduce their budget to below £10,000 has risen from 28% in 2020 to 35% in 2022. It amounts to one thing: less might indeed be the new more. From the rise in micro and minimalist weddings to zero-waste events, there’s a palpable industry shift toward something more pared-back and conscientious, with a renewed emphasis on budget.

How much?

First off, think about your exact figures. Financial projections can be notoriously tricky – especially during unprecedented times such as the current cost of living crisis – but be brutally honest with exactly how much you’ll have to spend – and stick with it. Be aware of the sources of your cash, be it a personal savings account or parental support, and establish exact amounts as soon as possible, as well as how your cash flow will work with regards to release of funds.

Certain costs will need to be paid upfront and in full, while others can be paid in instalments or via payment plans, so be prepared to discuss this with your suppliers. Also put a percentage aside for contingencies and unforeseen costs (10% is recommended), as most couples do tend to overspend, unwittingly or otherwise. This should also help you to avoid finding yourselves in debt or financial arrears or having to dip into your mortgage fund or the like.

What are your priorities?

Unless you have an unlimited budget, you’ll have to prioritise your main spends. What are you unwilling to compromise on? Where can you afford to spend less? “Is it a priority for you to have an awesome photographer or showstopping cake?” asks wedding planner Hazel Parsons from Out of the Ordinary Weddings (outoftheordinaryweddings.com). “Do some research and be realistic about the cost of this and work out your budget around what is important to you.”

If you’re aware of your non-negotiables from the outset, you’ll be more likely to design a day that’s reflective of your original ideas, unique to you – and on budget. Think about your guests’ experience of food, entertainment and styling, along with the ‘big’ decisions such as the venue. Can you book your dream venue for less by hosting an off-season or midweek wedding (or with fewer guests), or drop the final course from your preferred caterer in favour of a dessert table supplied by your guests instead of wedding gifts? By adopting a flexible, creative and all-hands-on-deck approach, you’re more likely to free up cash that can be pooled into the aspects you simply can’t do without.

Stay on track

Keep a meticulous tab of your incomings and outgoings in whatever form works best for you (there’s a variety of apps, while many couples still swear by spreadsheets). If you notice that your budget is being squeezed early on, then figure out where you’ve overspent, and how to mitigate it. For example, if you splurged on the dress, can you recoup the extra cost by shopping in the sales for your bridesmaids’ outfits?

You’ll be amazed by how quickly things may spiral, so don’t be afraid to press pause and regularly review (and replan) every element of your expenditure. Also, take note on when the balance for everything is due, and ensure you’ll have the funds available at the right time to pay each supplier.

Get family involved

Tap into the talents and help of those around you, which will ease the burden of responsibility, add an extra sense of personalisation and should free up some cash. “If you’re looking to have some DIY aspects to your wedding, find out if your friends and family would like to be involved, rather than putting all the pressure on yourself in the lead-up,” suggests Hazel.

Is there a musician in the family who could perform during the ceremony, an

illustrator who could assist with the signage or a friend happy to bake a batch of cupcakes for favours? Don’t be afraid to enlist the help of your nearest and dearest in any ways that you – and they – feel most comfortable, competent and confident with.

Do you really need it?

With many of today’s couples subscribing to a waste-less ethos during the planning phases, join the modern green movement by asking yourself how not to accumulate too much stuff. A classic example is being left with a stack of vases, crockery, bunting and even furniture that you were so eager to buy… but now have absolutely no use for.

There’s a simple solution to avoiding both the expense and material accumulation associated with weddings: “hire not buy!” asserts Hazel. “Rather than having to buy all the cutlery, glassware and décor you need, investigate hiring these,” she says. “This will allow you to afford better quality décor and takes away the hassle of having to source and store everything months ahead of your big day, as well as the pressure to sell it on afterwards.”

In short supply

Distinguish the difference between your needs and wants – and who can help you to achieve them. Even if you’re desperate to book your favourite band, you can always ask if they can perform as a solo or duo instead of a more expensive five-piece act. Think about how you can whittle down, reduce, simplify, swap and borrow in order to save cash and plan a wedding that gives you the very best value and outcome for your money. “Discuss with suppliers what will work within your budget,” advises Hazel. “For example, you can chat with florists about which types of flowers are in season and grown locally to keep costs down while also having a beautiful display! It may be more affordable to go for relaxed cut arrangements as opposed to floral designs.”

Once you’ve established your budget, made a list of your top priorities and figured out the best way for others to help, there’s a host of ideas on how to save money and spend it wisely. By utilising the people and places around you as well as discussing your requirements and budget with suppliers – who are highly experienced in such matters –you’re more likely to achieve a wedding that’s both beautifully ‘you’ and bang on budget.

MONEY-SAVING HACKS

Does the thought of the first dance fill you with terror or excitement? Between overanalysing it and assuming it’ll all come together naturally on the day, ask yourselves a few questions to get started, such as how do you envision it happening? And what will work best for you as a couple and the type of wedding you’re planning? You might want to have a little fun with it or flip the tradition on its head – whether that’s including a posse of your loved ones, incorporating your child guests or even getting your beloved pooch involved.

Then there’s the music. Choose a song that reflects your personalities: don’t conform to tradition or select the track that’s popular at the time if it doesn’t suit who you are as a

couple. You might prefer a classic ballad, a symbolic replay of the record that your parents danced to on their wedding day or your all-time favourite get-on-the-dance floor party track. An acoustic or live performance, vocals by a talented friend or even a karaoke session can make the first dance a unique and utterly ‘you’ event to relish and remember.

Impromptu

One of the most popular choices, the impromptu first dance is usually the result of selecting a special song (or not) and simply rolling with it. Some couples practise a few of their moves in advance, but generally

it’s a case of seeing where the music and mood (and bubbly!) takes you. The endnote is a more relaxed, ‘non-performance’ approach, signalling the start of the party with the mass migration of your guests onto the dancefloor as the tempo builds or switches into party mode.

Choreographed

A routine of some sort marks a more dedicated response to the first dance. You might have studied performance art, take regular salsa classes together or just love to move, so a choreographed dance will give you the perfect chance to show off your skills and repertoire.

pay homage to your favourite film or musical by replicating one of its iconic dance numbers (think Dirty Dancing, Pulp Fiction, Grease, Footloose and Saturday Night Fever), learn the steps to a dance song (Macarena remains as infectiously fun as ever) or employ a professional to help you create your own dance routine to suit your ability and personalities.

Group dance

If you’re keen on taking the pressure off while upping the fun factor, then a group dance is the easiest solution. This could be a family affair (you two and the kids/your parents/entire extended family), the newlyweds and the bridal party or all the guests – and can be impromptu, choreographed or even take the form of a dance-off. The newlyweds could still have a centre-stage moment or performance within the dance, or blend into the troupe entirely.

It could also involve an outfit change, entertainment element (such as acrobatics, circus act, live band or light show) or a complete mashup of music and dance styles, starting with a slow couple’s dance before blending into an upbeat family boogie followed by a group R&B routine with your gal pals (you can’t beat Beyoncé’s Crazy in Love, for example). Variations on group dances include line dancing (either instructor-led or with a screen playing instructions), a ceilidh or a folk dance. Ask your guests to submit their favourite song or to learn the moves to a pre-selected dance and give your DJ a list of well-known moves-in-the-lyrics songs such as YMCA, Time Warp and the Conga.

Professional dance performance

Employing a pair or group of professional dancers can double up as the first dance and wedding entertainment, and can take place alongside a couple’s dance or instead of. You could join in for the duration, toward the end or be the opening act – it’s entirely up to you.

The great thing about this option is that you can pick dancers and music to suit the theme and feel of your wedding. For example, if your wedding has a retro, rock and roll or vintage vibe, ask your dance act to perform The Bunny Hop, Jitterbug or Hand Jive – and ask your guests to learn them if they’d like to partake in the performance (giving them the element of choice takes the pressure off them too!). There are so many options, from belly dances and ballet to Bollywood, Argentine tango and Latin styles.

Father-daughter

If the groom isn’t thrilled (or remains terrified) of the first dance or you’d like to honour another special person instead of – or as well as – him, then switching partners is another option. Many brides begin the dance with their spouse before the father of the bride cuts in, but this could also be her brother, mother, sister, best friend, grandparent or child. When it comes to the first dance, do exactly what you want –dance The Loco-Motion with your mum before launching into a Disney megamix with your daughter and ending with Cha Cha Slide en masse! You could also congregate a few couples to join you, such as your siblings and their partners, mothers and fathers, aunties and uncles, and so on.

Opt out

It’s important to remember that the first dance, like so much else in modern weddings, is optional. If for any reason you can’t or don’t want to have one, then don’t. If you’re concerned about leaving that section out, then employ a professional dancer or musician to take to the stage in your absence or simply invite all your guests onto the dance floor for the first song of the evening. If it’s nerves that’s prohibiting you, wait for the party to be in full swing for a first dance interlude once you’ve warmed into the party spirit or swap the first dance for a last dance at the very end of the night (or even surprise your spouse by saving it for the privacy of your honeymoon suite!).

We all love a floor-filler and most of us find it easy to unleash our inner Beyoncé when the lights dim and the music starts. But a DJ and light-up dancefloor aren’t the only way to celebrate your newly married status. Here are some options for celebrating tying the knot that don’t involve a D.I.S.C.O…

Fireworks

Celebrate post-ceremony with a mammoth firework extravaganza. Working especially well for late afternoon or early evening ceremonies in the autumn and winter months (when it gets darker earlier), combine the show with drinks or food trucks so you can mingle outside beneath a glittery curtain of stars. Guests brandishing sparklers make awesome photographs, too.

Ceilidh

A traditionally decked-out barn complete with strings of fairy lights, bunting and hay bales is perfect for barn dancing. Scottish ceilidh dances usually include a live band and a caller who explains the instructions for each dance. It’s a great way to get everyone up on their feet and mixing. Cue much fancy footwork and lots of laughs!

Quiz

Either individually or in teams, a wedding day quiz – complete with a host in a sparkly jacket if you have a willing volunteer! – is sure to create a fun-filled vibe. Continue your theme with a quiz that encompasses weddings (yours, other family members or perhaps famous people) or any other

theme or topic you choose. General knowledge will likely raise the competitive spirits and produce plenty of those ‘oh-I-knew-it!’ moments.

Bingo

Eyes down! Despite all eyes being on the happy couple during the ceremony, a game of classic bingo might be just the thing for you and your guests to enjoy, post-ceremony. We love wedding-themed bingo where each player has to cross out things on their bingo card that were said during the speech, for example: ‘my wife and I’, ‘Love’, ‘Thank you for coming’ etc. Or, alternatively, how about guest bingo where each participant has to tick off things from their bingo card that relate to the guests e.g. ‘this person knew the bride at school’ or ‘this person lived next door to the groom’.

So a traditional disco isn’t your thing? There are so many awesome ways to celebrate in style on your wedding day. Here are some of our favourites

Karaoke

It’s not a do without a good old singsong so make a thing of it and go all-out with a professional karaoke set-up. Being in the spotlight can be optional so as not to terrify any reluctant singers, but feel free to suggest willing members of the wedding party. Bridesmaids, groomsmen or even your father-inlaw might form impromptu groups and you can listen to them belt out the classics.

Live band

Hire a band and then relax and enjoy them playing your favourite tunes after you’ve tied the knot. The sound of live music will always get the party started and, whether you opt for contemporary, blues, jazz, rock and roll or anything in-between, you’ll have plenty of dancers up and enjoying the tunes. You may be able to tailor the setlist to your requirements if your band is willing, and some bands are even open to guests joining them to perform.

Sports day

Sack races, egg and spoon or simply a bride in a voluminous bridal gown atop an orange space hopper – what’s not to love about an old-school sports day? You can go as competitive or low-key as you like with races or challenges, or how about a tug-of-war between the two families? If your venue allows it, use any outdoor space for garden games such as giant Jenga, chess, limbo, hook-a-duck, hoopla or even bouncy castles and gladiator-style duels or jousting sets. Pony or donkey rides or a petting zoo for your smaller guests would also add to the fete-like feel.

Murder mystery

Keep your guests guessing with a murder mysterythemed reception. Either go DIY or hire a company to organise it for you and be prepared for lots of props, plenty of red herrings and a soupçon of suspicion amongst your guests. This is a great way for guests to get to know each other too, so any newbies will be besties by the end of the evening.

Cinema screening

Watch your favourite movie from deckchairs on the lawn or ask your oldest friends or family members to create a montage of photographs from over the years and soak up the romance of an outdoor screening. Time permitting, your photographer or videographer may even be able to screen photographs or footage they have taken of the day. If you’re keen for a stage but don’t want a screen, you could hire musical theatre performers for a dramatic live performance of classic ballads from a selection of your favourite theatre shows.

Circus performers

Fill your venue’s outdoor area with living statues and walkabout entertainers, from stilt walkers to human trees coming to life – or even aerial artists or a synchronised swimming display if your venue happens to have a pool. Performers from all genres will ensure there is something awe-inspiring for every guest to enjoy and feast their eyes upon.

Beautiful love stories from across Devon

White Wedding

From elegant, pared-back styling to a party to remember, Sarah and Doug savoured their dream day at Upton Barn and Walled Garden

“We met when we were both at university,” reflects Sarah. “I was attending Bristol UWE in my first year and Doug was at Bath in his final year. Like all classic modern love stories, we met through Tinder!”

Some years later, on her 25th birthday, Doug convinced Sarah to go on a rainy dog walk to one of their favourite places. “We had our first kiss at Anstey’s Cove many years ago,” she explains. “As we got down to the beach Doug started to act a little odd and, before I knew it, he was proposing to me. It was pouring down with rain and having our dog with us made it even more special – it was perfect.”

Finding a wedding venue proved easy for the pair, who fell in love with Upton Barn and Walled Garden at first sight. “This place speaks for itself and it is the only place we viewed,” says Sarah. “It was everything we wanted: private, quiet and simply stunning.”

The couple had no need to worry when it came to the minutiae. “I just wanted it to be simple but elegant – and it really was!” explains Sarah. “White was the main theme, with green from lots of foliage and the sage green bridesmaid dresses.” With simplicity being key, she planned the wedding from start to finish in less than nine months.

Sarah spent the morning enjoying her bridal preparations in the stunning spa-like space of The Paddock. “I would recommend booking this - as well as the luxury accommodation pods - without a doubt!” she enthuses.

Sarah teamed her off-the-shoulder lace gown with a soft ponytail and a bouquet of cream roses, while Doug donned a dapper navy suit and sage green tie for the ceremony in the Cider Barn.

It was an incident during the ceremony that particularly stands out in Sarah’s memory. “As we said our vows, I think the nerves got the best of me because I suddenly forgot how to talk properly and gave the crowd a good laugh as I was trying to say the word ‘solemnly’ for about two minutes!” she reveals.

Having tied the knot, the couple relaxed over drinks and canapés with their guests before feasting on the “incredible” wedding breakfast while Daniel Costin played the violin before an infectious saxophone performance as night fell. “He definitely brought the party later on! He was joined by Future Media and the amazing Mark Voisey,” says Sarah of another of her and Doug’s highlights from the day.

“The whole day was so special, but I loved but how much time we spent together throughout it,” she reflects. “We always said we would make sure that it was our priority!”

“I truly felt like all my dreams had come true”

Maggie and Darren’s love story began many moons ago, when they met through friends at Uffculme School. A scenic stretch of North Devon was the backdrop to their engagement some years later: Darren popped the question while the couple were enjoying a beach barbecue at Crow Point as the sun was setting over the Atlantic.

Planning began in earnest for their wedding – and the choice of venue was a no-brainer. “We run Deer Farm Tipi Weddings in Cadeleigh, Tiverton,” explains Maggie. With sweeping views across rolling hills and resident red deer and stags, the venue marries dreamy rural escapism and natural beauty with contemporary accommodation and luxury off-white tipis.

Choosing sage green as their key colour, the tipis and surrounding outdoor spaces were styled beautifully with a carnival of flowers spilling from terracotta pots, troughs, watering cans and vintage bicycles to complement the natural setting, while bunting, flags and parasols added to the celebratory scene.

A showstopping pampas grass installation and hoops woven with foliage were suspended above tables decorated with arrangements of lush green leaves and dainty florals, while wildflowers decorated the plates. There were nods to their deer park setting, too, through elements such as the cake frame and table plan decorated with deer motifs.

Flanked by bridesmaids in sage green dresses, Maggie paired her elegant Kate Walker Bridal gown with a flower crown for the ceremony at St Bartholomew’s Church while Darren’s suit epitomised the country look via tweed and sage green accents.

Arriving in apt style to their tipi reception in a classic Landrover, the newlyweds ventured into the fields for photographs before joining their guests for welcome drinks in the blazing sunshine. Settling at the tables, everyone feasted on butternut squash orzo salad, spicy coleslaw, new potatoes, green Ottolenghi salad and sliced roast beef.

After the meal, guests spilled into the early evening sun, which provided a special memory for Maggie. “It was so lovely taking in the views and mingling with friends and family outdoors while the sun was setting behind the tipis,” she reflects. As dusk fell on the hot summer’s day and strings of festoon lights heightened the magical ambience, the dance floor was the place to be as live 12-piece band DT8 delivered an electric performance.

“I think my favourite moment was having our photos taken on the swing and watching everyone smiling and enjoying themselves,” reveals Maggie, who has some advice on timings for couples in the midst of planning. “Don’t set a strict time schedule,” she asserts. “Try to enjoy every moment without worrying about time; it will create a relaxing environment for everyone.”

Classic Romance Love Takes Over

Friends and family pitched in to create a personality-packed country wedding for Jenn and Molly at The Oak Barn

Jenn and Molly first met each other at work. “Molly proposed in one of our favourite places on Dartmoor on the most perfect sunny day,” reminisces Jenn. “The easiest ‘yes’ there’s ever been!”

Opting for a beautifully pared-back aesthetic featuring shades of sage and olive green, The Oak Barn provided the charming backdrop to their rustic style celebrations. “We didn’t want anything shiny and glitzy. We wanted a vintage, rustic feel throughout,” explains Jenn.

Sourcing and making much of the décor themselves lent a lovingly homemade feel to the day. A selection of bottles, candles and flowers were used to create the centrepieces, while also providing the pair with fond memories that they still cherish today. “We spent the day with some special friends digging the bottles from a river and cleaning them,” reveals Molly. “It was so special knowing so many people had contributed to making the day exactly as it was, and that there was a story behind all the different details.”

Opting for an early ceremony meant that the couple were able to maximise their celebrations in this idyllic corner of Devon. “We wanted to make the most of every minute,” says Jenn. “It meant nothing was rushed and we could cherish every part of the day!”

The drinks reception and speeches preceded the wedding breakfast. “It set a great atmosphere for the dinner and also meant those giving speeches could enjoy their speeches without worrying,” says Molly. “There was also no awkwardness over when the meal finished and the speeches started; it all flowed perfectly.”

Mediterranean sharing starters primed palates for chicken stuffed with woodland mushroom and garlic confit wrapped in bacon. For dessert, everyone gathered in the gardens for ice cream served from a trike. “Everyone enjoying ice cream in the sun was exactly the relaxed atmosphere we wanted to create before the party started!” explains Jenn. A pizza van and band kept evening guests well fed and entertained as they danced into the early hours, leaving Jenn and Molly elated while looking back upon their day.

“We spent so long thinking of every single tiny thing and seeing it all come together on the day was so much more special than anything we could have imagined,” says Jenn, who pauses before relaying one of her favourite moments.

“Walking in to Love Takes Over with everyone dancing and clapping and cheering will be a memory we will treasure forever! We also love looking back at the photos of us walking through the confetti: there are so many happy faces and people we love all in one place.”

“Don’t spend lots of money on things you could make or buy secondhand for a fraction of the price,” she shares as one of her top tips. “Ask your friends and family to come and help you all on one day –be organised with assigning jobs and you can get so much done so quickly.”

Emotions ran high during Veronika and Danny’s love-filled wedding at Pynes House

Hailing from Ukraine and Scotland respectively, Veronika and Danny first properly connected during their firm’s annual football tournament in Amsterdam. Their friendship blossomed into romance, and the pair later became engaged during an early Christmas trip to visit Danny’s parents in Edinburgh.

“I intended to pop the question on a hill overlooking Edinburgh at sunset,” he reveals. “After the first few words and Veronika realising what was happening, we both got so emotional and somewhere in there I slipped in the words ‘will you marry me?’ and got down on one knee to put on the ring.”

Falling for the elegant climes of Pynes House, the couple drew on their heritage to plan a wedding filled with personal touches and a palette of light blue and peach carried by a gorgeous array of hydrangeas. “They are the favourite flowers of my father who couldn’t be there,” explains Veronika.

“I think the defining thing about our wedding was our mix of our backgrounds and the tributes we paid to them throughout the day,” she continues. Danny’s Scottish heritage was reflected in the kilts and ceilidh dancing (“which is so much fun and is a fantastic way to get people into the dancing spirit!”), while Veronika’s Ukrainian roots proved an emotional aspect of the day.

“It has naturally been a very difficult year and we had to discuss in spring whether we would go ahead with the wedding, given most of my side wouldn’t be able to make it,” she says. “But my parents told us to go ahead and celebrate while we can, because no one never knows what’s going to happen tomorrow and postponing our wedding is not a victory they were prepared to give.”

With only Veronika’s mother able to attend, the celebrations were a “bittersweet” affair. “Not a dry eye was left in the room during the ceremony and speeches,” recalls Veronika. “But it was also special and beautiful, and a testimony that love wins despite everything. My dad, brother, niece and nephew, and other members of the family and friends were able to dial in and watch the ceremony live.”

Exchanging their vows before a drinks reception in the rose garden, the newlyweds then hosted a Ukrainian welcome ceremony. “My mother tied our hands together with rushnyk (a traditional Ukrainian decorative cloth), the same one that was used at their wedding 38 years ago, as a symbol of our lives now becoming one.”

The wedding breakfast treated guests to seared scallops, roast rump of lamb, caramel poached pear and baked vanilla cheesecake, fuelling guests for the ceilidh dancing and evening disco, which commenced with one of Veronika’s favourite moments. “We took some lessons to choreograph our first dance,” she says. “We danced to I Love You Baby by Frankie Valli so everyone sang along, which created an incredible atmosphere.”

“The best advice I received was from my colleague who said: ‘Expect things to go wrong on the day and, in most cases, no one will notice.’ It really helped with letting go of the fact that everything had to be perfect,” she reflects.

“The day was beautiful and will forever be in our memories!”

Shades of Sunset

A whirlwind holiday romance in Majorca blossomed into love for Naomi and Aidan. “We enjoyed our first date in England two weeks after we returned home,” she says. “We have since had two children and built our happy family life in West Sussex.”

Six years after their first Mediterranean encounter, Aidan orchestrated an epically romantic proposal at one of Naomi’s favourite beaches in southern Italy. “There was a table laid for two, scattered with rose petals and surrounded by candles. I remember saying: ‘look at that beautiful set-up, someone must have a very romantic evening planned’. Then I turned around and he was down on one knee holding a beautiful ring!”

The couple knew exactly what type of wedding they wanted. “It has always been a dream of ours to have an intimate wedding in a place surrounded by natural beauty,” explains Naomi. “We also wanted somewhere away from home, so that it felt like a a special getaway for us.” That special somewhere was Brickhouse Vineyard. “We instantly fell in love with everything about it,” she says.

Naomi relished the challenge of planning and styling their wedding. Choosing a boho theme with warm pastel sunset colours, the floristry was key to the look of the day, featuring fan palms, stocks, toffee roses, garden roses, phalaenopsis orchids, peonies and pampas. “We wanted beautiful flowers to bring the place to life and complement the surrounding natural beauty,” she explains.

Bringing a DIY element to the day, Naomi made the stationery, signage and – being a professional pastry chef and cake maker – the wedding cake and macaron favours. “I made all the place name cards on seeded paper that could be kept and planted to grow wildflowers,” she says. “I also crafted the bridesmaids’ flower crowns from pampas grass and gypsophila that I picked and dried myself.”

The ceremony proved a standout moment of the day for the couple. “One of my favourite parts was reading our personal vows that we had each written and had kept a secret until the day,” says Naomi. “It made my heart melt to hear the loving vows Aidan had written for me.”

After drinks in the grounds, everyone tucked into an “outstanding” feast, featuring Darts Farm beef, roast sea bass, ratatouille tart, wedding cake and fresh fruit platters.

Looking back, the first dance lingers in Aidan’s mind as a magical moment. “It was like it was just me and Naomi in the room dancing to our song,” he reflects. “Then when it finished everyone joined us on the dance floor, which made it feel even more special.”

“Having our children as part of our wedding day was the most magical thing for us,” adds Naomi. “The following day our daughter asked us ‘when are mummy and daddy getting married again?’ because she enjoyed the day so much!”

Naomi imparts some sound planning advice. “Writing a guest list should be one of the first things you do as this will help you to find a venue with the right amount of space for your party,” she recommends. “Schedule in some couple time without wedding talk, and remember that your wedding day is really about the two of you and your happiness!”

Lovingly handmade touches added to the charm of Ella and Luke’s rural wedding at Harefield Barn

After being set up by mutual friends at Young Farmers’ Club, Ella and Luke formed an instant connection. Their relationship moved apace and, during a holiday in Cornwall, Luke didn’t let the weather hamper his plans to propose at Constantine Bay. “It was pouring with rain and very windy, then Luke got down on one knee – it was perfect!” reminisces Ella. “We were both kitted out in our welly boots and raincoats, which summed us up as the outdoorsy, country couple that we are.”

Flanked by acres of idyllic Devon countryside, Harefield Barn was the perfect venue for the countryloving pair. They decorated the indoor and outdoor spaces with a mix of fresh and dried flowers including delphiniums, roses, sunflowers, orlaya, veronica, nigella and scabiosa, while a selection of Ella’s homegrown blooms were added to pots and troughs. Created by Ella’s friend and bridesmaid, the bespoke stationery added another personal touch. “Laurie incorporated everything that we asked for, from Luke’s tractor to our wedding flowers and our beloved dogs, Clover and Roxy,” she says.

Filled with emotion and carefully selected words and music performed by a string quartet, the ceremony was perfectly pitched. “I walked down the aisle to I Giorni, we chose Sweet Disposition while we signed the register, and we walked out to Everlasting Love. It helped make our ceremony personal,” says Ella, who cites the ceremony as one of their “top moments” – especially with the addition of a poem that had been written by Luke’s late grandfather. “It encompasses what it is to be in the country, and with our ceremony being outside and surrounded by rolling hills it was a really treasured moment,” says Luke.

After taking a ride on Luke’s lovingly renovated tractor, the couple joined their guests for a feast including steak and ale pie, aubergine and vegan cream cheese stack and bowls of fresh raspberries and strawberries, chocolate brownies and mini meringues served with ice cream. A competitive round of horse racing, whereby ‘jockeys’ had to pull wooden horses across the finish line with rope, an electric live performance from SeaTrees and an evening barbecue added to the magic of the evening celebrations.

With Ella having been involved in a car accident the previous winter – and the wedding very nearly being postponed – emotions ran high throughout the day. “I have since been recovering from a mild brain injury and we were lucky I recovered enough for us to go ahead with the wedding,” she explains. “I know everyone’s wedding day is special, but ours meant that much more to be surrounded by all our friends and family after what was such a turbulent nine months.”

Reflecting on their day, the couple’s champagne picnic at sunset, taking in views across the rolling meadows, stands out as a particularly fond memory. “The time spent just the two of us on our wedding day was priceless,” says Luke. “We highly recommend planning some time for just the two of you during your wedding. It was the highlight of our day.”

Chloe and David first laid eyes on each other across a crowded bar on Halloween. “Somehow in all the madness and seas of people in fancy dress we lost each other,” recalls Chloe. “I woke up the following day to a message from David asking to take me on a date. I accepted and the rest is history!”

David surprised Chloe by proposing while renovating their first home during lockdown in 2020. “He called me and, when I walked into the room, he was down on one knee amongst the rubble and proposed. His reasoning for proposing in our new home was because we were literally building our future together and he said: ‘it just feels right and I couldn’t wait any longer’.”

With its sweeping parkland and breathtaking celebration spaces, Powderham Castle made an enchanting venue for their “autumnal, rustic, country estate” wedding. “We met in the autumn and it’s also our favourite season, so it seemed a fitting theme,” explains Chloe. Against the majestic spaces of the historic castle and the autumnal light, the seasonal palette of burnt orange, rust and soft peach, which carried from the flowers to the bridesmaids’ dresses, made for a soul-stirring scene.

A violinist provided a stirring soundtrack to their emotional ceremony in the State Dining Room, after which drinks and canapés were savoured in the rose garden “as we were blessed with gorgeous sun and clear skies,” reminisces Chloe. “The kids danced to the music with the deer running around in the fields behind.”

Guests tucked into a feast full of Devon produce including slow-roasted sirloin of Westcountry beef and A ‘Taste of Devon’ trio of desserts comprising Uffculme dark chocolate torte, local clotted cream and poached rhubarb panna cotta, and Luscombe apple cider sorbet.

“The speeches had the room both laughing and crying about our childhood memories and the years we’ve spent as a couple,” says Chloe. The newlyweds were transported to the Riding School Barn in the back of a burnt orange pick-up for an evening party filled with live music, a photo booth and glitter bar. “The whole day was filled with smiles and we finished the evening to cheesy disco classics and way too much cake!” she laughs.

“My favourite moment was when David and I got back to the castle after all our guests had left. It was the first time we spent together alone and without prompt we both hugged and slow danced again for the last time on such a precious day,” she reflects. For David, it was the ceremony that provided the standout moment. “Seeing Chloe walk down the aisle was my favourite moment by far,” he smiles. “That feeling will stay with me forever.”

Chloe has some tips for couples in the midst of planning. “Create a supplier checklist with contact details. You can also note and track your spend against each supplier. This helps keep on top of your budget and you can also use the checklist closer to the time to confirm last minute details with each person,” she recommends. “Make time regularly to recap what you have booked so far. You can get lost in wedding brain fog so checking what’s actually booked every few months is really refreshing.”

family gathered at beautiful Rockbeare Manor for Megan and Luke’s springtime celebrations

Luke and Megan first laid eyes on each other while living and working in Ibiza. “Our friendship groups clicked immediately and we spent the summer making amazing memories and all ended up living in an apartment together,” says Megan. Upon their return, the pair began meeting up and soon became a couple, relocating to Devon from Dunfermline and Nottingham to be together.

The city of love provided the perfect backdrop for their romantic engagement at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. “We pitched up right across from it with a bottle of Prosecco and, just as it lit up, Luke got down on one knee and asked me to marry him,” reminisces Megan.

Smitten by the first venue they visited, Rockbeare Manor was everything they wanted for their wedding. Enlisting the professional services of Knots & Kisses to help create their “classic, timeless and neutral with a modern twist” styled wedding, Megan was thrilled with the stunning results. “Nikki was absolutely incredible,” she says. “Every vision we had she made a reality.”

A gorgeous mix of foliage, fresh and dried flowers was key to achieving the day’s aesthetic. “I was so happy I opted for a dried bouquet as it now lives on my dressing table so I can look at it every day,” adds Megan.

Kick-starting the celebrations early with a Friday night gathering allowed extra mingling time. “This was great as it gave us more opportunity to spend our wedding day together,” explains Megan.

Come the day, everything fell into perfect place. “We couldn’t have picked a better day weather-wise as the sun was shining bright, with all the spring daffodils in bloom adding to Rockbeare’s incredible beauty,” says Megan. Although one of her bridesmaids went into labour that morning, the rest of the day played out as planned, from the stirring ceremony to the sun-spilled drinks reception and bagpipe soundtrack in honour of Megan’s Scottish heritage.

“It really was the most incredible day,” smiles Megan. “I think after two years of postponements and all the sadness that had happened in the world everyone was ready to just be together and enjoy each other’s company. There was a real feeling of love from start to finish.”

“Our favourite moment by far was having such incredible pictures at golden hour,” she reveals. “It gave us the opportunity to spend time and reflect on the day. It’s something we would never have thought to do; we’re thankful that we had such amazing suppliers that suggested this to make our day even more special.”

“Ensure you find the right suppliers that fit you as a couple,” she says by word of advice. “Especially picking a photographer and videographer that you trust, so you can relive the day for years to come. And most importantly of all, enjoy it and don’t feel bad for spending time together! We spent the whole evening dancing and laughing together and our guests joined in.”
