Agent of the week: Joy Frankel Q: Why did you choose to be a Real Estate agent with RE/MAX Elite? A: I chose RE/MAX Elite because of its reputation in the community. I worked for Lennar Homes as a new home consultant and had the opportunity to explore all the RE/MAX offices in Brevard. RE/MAX Elite stood out head and shoulders above all the others and I knew that was where I wanted to be. Q: What do you think is the best thing about living in Brevard County Florida? A: The location. It is in close proximity to the river and the ocean, the airports and Orlando. Being in the central part of the state in Brevard, the weather is a definite plus.

Q: Tell us about your favorite experience with one of your clients. A: Every one of my clients is a favorite experience. I would not be able to choose a favorite. It has been a learning experience for me to work with people from all parts of the country. I have made many life-long friends and learned from all of them. Q: Have you traveled outside the United States? A: Yes, I have traveled extensively to the Caribbean on the wonderful cruise ships that our state has to offer. Also, to Jamaica and Mexico. The cruise ships are a definite plus for people relocating from the Midwest and Northeast to our wonderful state. Q: What is the most surprising thing to happen to you recently? A: I received a call from a woman who I went to college with who is looking to relocate to Central Florida from New Jersey. When she called, she did not realize it was me and we hope to renew our friendship when she and her family come to find their new home in paradise! Q: What is your favorite sport? A: Baseball and the New York Yankees. You can take the girl out of New York but you can’t take New York out of the girl! My favorite player is Derek Jeter. Q: Favorite quote or saying: A: Be kind to everyone, for they are fighting battles you know nothing about. Q: Where/how did you meet your spouse/significant other? A: I met my late husband, Charlie Frankel, in New Jersey. He was the vice president of Weichert Realtors and he taught me to learn and love this business as much as he did for 35 years. I will always be grateful to him for that.

Hit the Reset Button in Your Brain THIS month, many Americans will take time off from work to go on vacation, catch up on household projects and simply be with family and friends. And many of us will feel guilty for doing so. We will worry about all of the emails piling up at work, and in many cases continue to compulsively check email during our precious time off. But beware the false break. Make sure you have a real one. The summer vacation is more than a quaint tradition. Along with family time, mealtime and weekends, it is an important way that we can make the most of our beautiful brains. Every day we’re assaulted with facts, pseudofacts, news feeds and jibber-jabber, coming from all. directions. According to a 2011 study, on a typical day, we take in the equivalent of about 174 newspapers’ worth of information, five times as much as we did in 1986. As the world’s 21,274 television stations produce some 85,000 hours of original programming every day (by 2003 figures), we watch an average of five hours of television per day. For every hour of YouTube video you watch, there are 5,999 hours of new video just posted! If you’re feeling overwhelmed, there’s a reason: The processing capacity of the conscious mind is limited. This is a result of how the brain’s attentional system evolved. Our brains have two dominant modes of attention: the task-positive network and the task-negative network (they’re called networks because they comprise distributed networks of neurons, like electrical circuits within the brain). The task-positive network is active when you’re actively engaged in a task, focused on it, and undistracted; neuroscientists have taken to calling it the central executive. The task-negative network is active when your mind is wandering; this is the daydreaming mode. These two attentional networks operate like a seesaw in the brain: when one is active the other is not. This two-part attentional system is one of the crowning achievements of the human brain, and the focus it enables allowed us to harness fire, build the pyramids, discover penicillin and decode the entire human genome. Those projects required some plain old-fashioned stick-to-itiveness. But the insight that led to them probably came from the daydreaming mode. This brain state, marked by the flow of connections among disparate ideas and thoughts, is responsible for our moments of greatest creativity and insight, when we’re able to solve problems that previously seemed unsolvable. You might be going for a walk or grocery shopping or doing something that doesn’t require sustained attention and suddenly — boom — the answer to a problem that had been vexing you suddenly appears. This is the mind-wandering mode, making connections among things that we didn’t previously see as connected. A third component of the attentional system, the attentional filter, helps to orient our attention, to tell us what to pay attention to and what we can safely ignore. This undoubtedly evolved to alert us to predators and other dangerous situations. The constant flow of information from Twitter, Facebook, Vine, Instagram, text messages and the like engages that system, and we find ourselves not sustaining attention on any one thing for very long — the curse of the information age. >>>>Read more BrevardElite.com

U.S. housing market improving, inflation pressures muted (Reuters) - U.S. housing starts surged to an eight-month high in July, suggesting the nation's housing market recovery was back on track after stalling in the second half of last year. While the rebound points to sustained economic strength, other data on Tuesday showed inflation largely under wraps, which could give the Federal Reserve room to maintain its ultra-easy monetary policy stance for a bit longer. "The Fed will find these data further supportive of the go-it-slow approach to exiting its accommodative policies," said Dan Greenhaus, chief strategist at BTIG in New York. Groundbreaking for new housing jumped 15.7 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted 1.09-million unit annual pace, the highest level since November, the Commerce Department said. The gain snapped two straight months of declines and beat economists' expectations for a rise to only a 969,000-unit rate. It was the latest sign the market was regaining its footing after being slammed by a run-up in interest rates last year. A shortage of properties for sale has also lifted prices, pushing housing out of the reach of many first-time buyers. Separately, the Labor Department said its Consumer Price Index edged up 0.1 percent last month as declining energy costs partially offset increases in food and rents. The CPI had increased 0.3 percent in June. In the 12 months through July, the CPI increased 2.0 percent after advancing 2.1 percent in June. While the so-called core CPI, which strips out volatile food and energy costs, ticked up 0.1 percent for a second straight month, economists said there was no evidence the underlying trend in inflation was shifting lower. Rents, which account for more than a third of the CPI basket, increased 0.3 percent in July and were up 2.9 percent from a year ago. In the year through July, the core CPI was up 1.9 percent. The Fed targets 2 percent inflation, but it tracks an index that is running lower than the CPI. FED WATCHING WAGES Most economists do not expect the U.S. central bank to raise benchmark rates until around the middle of next year, given sluggish wage growth. It has kept rates near zero since December 2008. Average weekly earnings adjusted for inflation rose 0.3 percent year-on-year in July after a 0.2 percent dip in June, the Labor Department said. "Fed Chair (Janet) Yellen considers income growth as the key to future inflation issues and since she doesn't see any wage gains just yet, she will likely continue on course," said Joel Naroff, chief economist at Naroff Economic Advisors in Holland, Pennsylvania. "As for investors, limited inflation and stronger housing are nothing but good news since they imply good growth ahead without the Fed having to move prematurely." U.S. stocks rose on the data, with homebuilders such as Pulte Group (PHM.N) and DR Horton (DHI.N) rallying. The PHLX housing sector index .HGX was up 1.7 percent in late morning trading, outperforming the broader market. In another bright sign, home improvement retailer Home Depot (HD.N) reported second-quarter earnings that topped Wall Street's expectations and it raised its full-year profit forecast, sending its shares up 5.9 percent. Groundbreaking for single-family homes, the largest part of the market, increased 8.3 percent in July to a seven-month high. Single-family starts in the South, where about half of the single-family construction takes place, rebounded 16.9 percent after dropping sharply in June. Starts for the volatile multi-family homes segment jumped 33 percent to the highest level since January 2006. This market is being buoyed by a shift towards renting, as many prospective buyers give up on the dream of owning a house. >>>Read more BrevardElite.com
