Florida TaxWatch: State 47th in nation for taxation U.S. Supreme Court ruling may threaten bike trails The Supreme Court’s ruling in a Wyoming land dispute Monday could result in the loss of thousands of miles of bicycle trails or cost the government millions of dollars in land payments and legal bills. The justices ruled 8-1 that government easements used to build railroads on public and private property in the West expire when railroads go belly up, and the land must revert to its owners. Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for the majority, said the case was decided based on an 1875 act of Congress and a 1942 Supreme Court decision involving Great Northern Railway.
That ruling said the government had received easements without any long-term land rights, Roberts said. “We’re going to stick with that today,” he said. The decision could jeopardize the “rails to trails” program that has created more than 1,400 bike and nature trails, many of them built along railroad rightsof-way. It prompted a lone dissent from Justice Sonia Sotomayor. “The court undermines the legality of thousands of miles of former rights of way that the public now enjoys as means of transportation and recreation,”
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – March 18, 2014 – Florida’s state government tax burden is one of the lowest in the nation – No. 47. But a closer look at each individual’s tax burden finds the ranking a bit higher, according to the Florida TaxWatch report, “How Florida Compares.” “One specific tax ranking cannot tell the whole story,” says Dominic M. Calabro, president and CEO of Florida TaxWatch, an independent, nonpartisan research institute. “It is our hope that this more comprehensive report will help taxpayers and policymakers better understand how states fund their governments and demonstrate that low taxes in one area often means higher taxes in another area.” Floridians’ per capita state tax burden fell to 47th in 2012 (latest data available) – the lowest rankings since Florida TaxWatch began tracking them. However, Florida’s per capita tax ranking (No. 22) was higher than many other states in 2011 (latest available data.)

There's A New Scam To Steal Your Gmail Info, And It's Hard To Catch Warning: If you receive an email with the subject "Documents," and it directs you to a webpage that looks like a Google Drive sign-in page, do not enter your information. It's likely a new phishing scam, in which a thief creates a fake portal that asks for people's private information and then steals it. (Netflix recently faced a similar issue.) This one uses a fake Google Drive landing page to get your Gmail address and password, cyber security company Symantec's official blog reported last Thursday. You're meant to think that the documents you'll be viewing are on Google Docs and that you need to sign in to see them. Remember, though, it's all a scam. "We've removed the fake pages and our abuse team is working to prevent this kind of spoofing from happening again," a representative from Google tells The Huffington Post. "If you think you may have accidentally given out your account information, please reset your password."

A downside to the refinancing bubble? NEW YORK – March 17, 2014 – Homeowners who refinanced when
fixed mortgage rates inched in record territory below 4 percent may be less likely to sell their homes as interest rates climb, according to a recent survey of 1,900 Americans by the Seattlebased real estate brokerage, Redfin. If so, tight inventories of homes for-sale may persist. Homebuyers said that “low inventory” topped their list of frustrations in the housing market, according to the survey. While those who nabbed a low-refinance rate may want to keep their homes, they may opt to rent them out instead of sell. Cauliflower Pizza Crust 1 head of cauliflower 1 tsp dried oregano 1/2 tsp garlic powder 1/4 tsp dried thyme 1/8 tsp dried rosemary 1/2 cup shredded parmesan cheese 2 eggs 1/4 tsp kosher salt Pizza sauce and toppings 1.Preheat your oven to 400 degrees. Cut your cauliflower up into small florets. 2.Pulse it in the food processor until it’s roughly the size of rice. 3.Put it in a microwave safe container and microwave for about six minutes. When it’s cool enough to touch, pour it into a clean kitchen towel, and twist to get out as much liquid as you can. 4.Put the cauliflower in a bowl and add the dried herbs, salt and cheese. Add the eggs and mix well. 5.Add a few tablespoons of olive oil to a cookie sheet and form the cauliflower mixture into small circles (4-6 inches in diameter). Make sure they are even thicknesses. 6.Bake for about 20 minutes until it starts to get golden brown on top. 7.Add your topping and put it back until the oven. 8.Bake until the cheese is melted.
