PROGRESS
NEW MEXICO CRAFT BEER MAKING
By Luke Macias NM Dark Side Brew Crew

2. Local cider and wine will now be readily available at your local brewery and brewpub. This offers a great alternative for the gluten-free or non-beer drinkers in your party and keeps promoting local manufacturing.
fter the 2015 session of the New Mexico Legislature wrapped, the Crew interviewed the NM Brewers Guild’s Chris Goblet about the bills that were passed that will affect the craft brewing industry.
3. SB 440 will allow wineries and breweries to host private events and functions and offer both beer and wine.
DSBC: The legislative session just wrapped. Overall, how do you feel about how everything went this year?
4. HB 243 makes growlers our God-given beer drinking right, and we don’t need to have any concern that they could be compromised.
Goblet: I was truly impressed by the response we received at the Round House. The more time I spent there, the more I realized that New Mexico craft beer is really making progress both in the rural areas and in the metro (areas). … The nice thing about beer is that it is totally bipartisan. … We were very pleased that all five of our key legislative items (mentioned below) were passed by the Senate and the House … unanimously.
5. Breweries will now be able to open a third off-premise location. Formerly every brewery was allowed one tasting room directly adjacent their manufacturing facility and two off-site tap rooms. This third tap room means that Marble, Bosque, Blue Corn, Chama River, and others can look to open an additional location.
DSBC: What will their impact be on our brewers, beer-serving establishments, and our NM beer, wine, and cider industry?
6. SB 471 allows for Alternating Proprietorship, which is a cool mechanism that would allow a small brewery to rent a portion of a larger brewery to increase production. Let’s say a small brewpub has a very popular beer they want to brew a larger batch, they can now go over to a larger brewery and use their facility to brew a big batch of beer and keep the books separate and clean.
Goblet: Well, it is always hard to tell what the outcome will be from passing a bill, but here are a few of my thoughts: 1. More product choice. SB 238 will allow brewpubs with a restaurant license to now package their beer. This mean seeing Second Street, Blue Corn, Chama River, Turtle Mountain, and others can be served in bottle or can or on tap at your local restaurant.

BRINGING HOME THE GOLD
By Chris “Stoutmeister” Jackson NM Dark Side Brew Crew
Mexico back-to-back winners after La Cumbre Brewing’s Project Dank won the title in 2014.
Another big year for craft beer in New Mexico is in the books as 2015 comes to a close.
Bosque then repeated as New Mexico IPA Challenge winner in July.
In addition to the successes enjoyed by the industry at the State Legislature, there were several other major stories over the course of the year.
Other breweries stayed busy with renovations and expansions. Marble Brewery completely renovated their downtown taproom, enlarged their Westside taproom, and finished the year by starting work on a massive brewery expansion.
New Mexico brought home four medals from the Great American Beer Festival in Denver in September. Bosque Brewing captured their first gold for Acequia IPA in the Wet Hop category.
La Cumbre expanded as well, adding a new brewhouse and more equipment.
It was hardly the only big moment for Bosque on the year. The brewery opened a new taproom in Nob Hill in January. In the spring, Bosque and other New Mexico breweries competed in the National IPA Challenge, hosted by The Brewing News. Bosque’s Scale Tipper IPA ended up defeating Canteen Brewhouse’s Exodus IPA in the final, giving New
The year’s major festivals saw some new additions, including the VIPA Challenge and ABQ Brew Dash in the summer. The Mountain West Brew Fest debuted in Bernalillo over Labor Day weekend. Several brewers were also on the move. Brady McKeown left Canteen to start up Quarter Celtic Brewpub, which will open in early 2016. Andrew Krosche went from Marble to Ponderosa Brewing, while Brandon Venaglia jumped from Back Alley Draft House to Cazuela’s Brewery.
BREWERIES ON THE BOOM
By Chris “Stoutmeister” Jackson NM Dark Side Brew Crew The silence was broken in 2015.
After a long, quiet stretch with few breweries opening, this year New Mexico saw six new breweries launched, plus two notable taprooms. Santa Fe Brewing was able to at last open a taproom in Albuquerque, though with a unique twist. The SFBC taproom is the anchor tenant of the Green Jeans Farmery, a complex built out of old shipping containers located near Carlisle and Interstate 25. Bosque Brewing opened a second taproom in Nob Hill in January. Their other taproom, located in Las Cruces, had opened in December 2014. New to the Albuquerque metro area were Boese Brothers Brewery, located downtown at 6th Street and Gold; Rio Bravo Brewing, located on 2nd Street just south of I-40; and Albuquerque Brewing, located along the I-25 frontage road between Paseo del Norte and Alameda. Rio Bravo has already announced plans to began canning and distributing beer in 2016, while the others are much smaller in scale. Distillery 365, which opened off Candelaria in the “Brewery District,” also began producing beer in addition to their spirits.
Down south, Picacho Peak Brewing became the fourth operational brewery in the Las Cruces area. Bathtub Rowing Brewing opened in Los Alamos, becoming the first cooperatively owned brewery in the state. By all indications, 2016 will be even busier. Breweries projected to open in Albuquerque will include Quarter Celtic Brewpub, The 377 Brewery, Sidetrack Brewing, Firkin Brewhouse, Bow & Arrow Brewing, Palmer Brewery and Cider House, and Starr Brothers Brewing. Other new breweries will include Rowley Farmhouse Ales (Santa Fe), Milton’s Brewing (Carlsbad), Farmington HUB Brewery, and Ale Republic (Cedar Crest). There will also be new taprooms opened by Marble Brewery, Kaktus Brewing, Duel Brewing, and Red Door Brewing.

Brewers Crew launch party for Volume 1 Issue 2,
MR. HOPS
Hear ye hear ye fellow Lovers of Lager,
Advocates of Ale, Buffs of Brew, Devotees of Draft, Sectaries of Suds and Zealots of, well, Beer! Welcome to the first run down by me, Mr. Hops as I impart knowledge, answer questions, give my opinions and otherwise provide some Class A reading. – Enjoy!
Question by Dark and Stout – “I enjoy a good stout beer, but I’ve always wondered, Mr. Hops, what type of grain is used to make the stout so dark?”
Mr. Hops, being recognized at a local Micro Brewery, faced a couple of questions from some of Brewers Crew dedicated readers. In true Mr. Hops fashion, he thought he’d share with us:
Dear Short Tanned-One, I’ve always believed, the darker the berry, the sweeter the juice. Or maybe, the older the berry the sweeter the juice. Either way, berries are good, but, not as good as a finely crafted Stout. Just the other day, while I was watching the snow fall (and melt) in my Albuquerque backyard, I reflected on the days when only a few good stouts were available. As a blessing from the beer gods, that is no longer the case. There are many styles, including Irish Stouts, British Stouts and American Stouts, of course, each with numbers of sub-styles. Going further into Stout love are the “extra stouts” and luscious “imperial stouts.” Looking at American Stouts, we generally want to find a beer that is fairly strong, hoppy, bitter and vigorously roasted. This lovely variety should be jet black or dark brown, wafting medium to heavy aromas of roasted malts, coffee or even dark chocolate. As far as the grains go, it really is up to the brew master brewing the brew, but most use dark-grains. The key however is that the grain, be it barley or malt, must be strongly roasted to achieve the desired result. Now stop wondering, order up a large bowl of loud-mouth soup and enjoy the New Year!!
Question by IPA Enigma – “There seem to be a couple of different views on the difference, but, Mr. Hops, please tell us, what’s the difference between an IPA and double IPA?” Dear “I-Puzzled-Am”, It seems only a few short decades ago, sitting in the ol’ school house on the hill, sweet little Mrs. Krabanstash imparted upon me some deep wisdom that I’ll never let go of. Mrs. K told me, ‘Mr. Hops, the difference between an item and double that item, is, well, the item.’ The short answer, based on that nugget of truth, is that a double IPA has one more IPA than an IPA. Or, as Andrew Dice Clay would say, “What’s the f$%_!#g difference honey!” OR……IPA’s come in several styles, including, but not limited to, American, Belgian, Black, Brown, Red, Rye and White (not to mention the delicious English IPA’s, but let’s stick with non-English derived styles). Generally, an IPA has a hop-forward balance, with a dry finish and a clean fermentation profile. These IPA’s typically showcase modern American or New World hop species. Now, a Double IPA is a sub-class of the Strong American Ales. With the Double IPA you can expect a strong pale ale (not malty or sweet like American barleywine) that demonstrates a strongly hopped non-harsh, dry and clean flavor. Either way, Mr. Hops recommends you order one of each, in any order you like, and thoroughly enjoy the wonderful juice we call IPA.
Enjoy the New Year my Beer-thren!!! Yours Truly, Mr. Hops!!
