This course will provide opportunities for students to develop portraiture, exploring different techniques and methods to capture character and likeness. There will be exercises to develop observational drawing, as well as the use of different art materials. Students will be exposed to both traditional and modern portraits and be encouraged to use these as sources of inspiration. There will be a model for four of the ten sessions.

Who says you can’t draw! On this course you will gain confidence in your drawing by developing your observational skills, using a range of different drawing media whilst exploring mark-making, tone and composition.

Ever wanted to make a piece of jewellery but didn’t know how? This course will introduce you as a beginner to working with silver, the tools used to manipulate it and techniques such as texturing, soldering and polishing as well as some contemporary approaches. Bring your ideas and your inspiration and turn them into beautiful, wearable jewellery. This course is suitable for beginners or those who have dabbled and would like to go a little further. Basic supplies of silver will be available to purchase but other items will need to be ordered by students.

In this course you will learn about different acrylic art materials and painting techniques including washes, glazes, palette knife, flat colour and impasto using both thin and thick acrylic paint.

This course will provide an opportunity for people of all abilities to develop painting direct from a life model. You will explore paint handling and develop mark making using brushes as well as other tools. Colour will be explored through the use of some limited colour combinations and the development of personal colour palettes How to look and translate the figure, and the use of some measuring technique will also be covered. While all painting mediums will be acceptable (oil, acrylic, gouache and watercolour) some exercises will be limited to oils only and acrylics only for technique purposes. The higher fee for this workshop reflects using a life model.

An improvers course in watercolour for those who have established the basic techniques on a beginners course. Exploring Watercolour will consolidate and improve existing skills such as paint handling, washes and brush marks, working wet in wet and wet on dry, working with transparent and opaque techniques and colour mixing, using a wide variety of subject matter.

An improver’s course for those who already have confidence in basic watercolour skills and wish to extend their practice. Using a variety of subject matter the course will include paint handling, working wet and working dry, composition and building up, as well as more experimental techniques for creating textural and transparent effects.

Students may like to progress to Contemporary Watercolour in the Spring.

If you have some drawing experience but don’t feel ready for an advanced course, this is the perfect course for you. Emphasis will be on developing your drawing skills using a variety of techniques and introducing a limited range of colour to enhance your drawing as the course develops.

This course is designed for students of all abilities. Beginners will learn to cut coloured glass and lead the pieces together to make a small panel. After the rudiments of the craft have been grasped, students can make a project of their own design and choosing. More experienced students may embark on more ambitious projects. There are also opportunities to learn the ‘tiffany’ copper foil technique (for the construction of jewellery, mobiles or lamps).

Working with Pastels and More

Artist pastels are a versatile and exciting medium which come in a full range of colours from strong tones to the palest hues. Pastels are an exciting medium to use in combination with other media, particularly for working on top of watercolour/ gouache and over mono prints.

Beginners will follow a course covering the basic forming techniques which include throwing, pinching, coiling and slabbing. Experienced students will be instructed and guided at their own level. Students will have the opportunity to decorate and glaze their pieces and will learn the elements of glaze formulation. There will be an opportunity to take part in a Raku Firing. Pottery Tutor: Chris Barnes Come and explore the range of hand-building pottery techniques to make decorative, functional and sculptural objects for your home. You will be amazed at what you can create from a simple lump of clay! Chris will use his wide experience of making and decorating to lead you through different techniques and guide you on finishing and glazing the object you create. This course offers advanced life drawers/painters and artists the opportunity to develop art work independently with a model, and to build confidence working from a life model. You will have the opportunity to individually direct poses and timescales for one or more of the sessions. Two of the 20 sessions will be dedicated to group feedback. You will be able to see how the tutor works from a model and ask about relevant techniques and processes.

This course will give a grounding in hand building techniques for those new to working with clay, but also provide the opportunity to develop more advanced techniques for those with previous clay working experience. Students will have the opportunity to make clay lanterns, birds and vessels. Slip decorating and under glaze techniques will be explored to embellish birds and vessels.

Oil Painting Tutor: Catherine MacDiarmid This course is designed for both beginners and experienced students of oil painting. Introduction to Safer Etching Tutor: Marion Kuit This course aims to introduce etching using zinc plates. You will learn how to prepare a metal plate using line and texture to make prints using a roller press. The ten week course will take you step by step through the different processes needed to make prints using both hard and soft ground methods. Conventional etching uses acids and resins which are dangerous to health, however this course will show students how to use new, safe products. Contemporary Printmaking

Tutor: Ann Marie Foster Discover how to create contemporary, vibrant, textured prints that combine printmaking techniques with mixed media. The course will provide you with skills in a variety of techniques ranging from dry point drawing to monoprint. You will be shown how to make a collagraph which involves methods of collaging different materials to produce highly textured prints. At the end of the course you will be able to make contemporary prints which express, line, texture, surface and pattern. The course is suitable for all abilities. Modelling the angles, lines and form of the human head has fascinated people from every culture throughout history. This course will guide you in the techniques necessary to construct a clay head sculpture of life-size proportions. We will look at the styles and approaches taken by sculptors (contemporary & historical) as you develop your own piece. A fantastic opportunity to work with local glass designer Marilyn Hale. You will learn how to cut glass in preparation for fusing (kiln formed glass) and will be encouraged to experiment with the material and design and make a stunning decorative item of your own. We will be looking at textured glass, pebble effects, chemical reactions between glass and metals and the use of organic inclusions to make patterns. Once learned these methods can all be used to make jewellery, bowls, decorations and wall hangings. This is the course for anyone interested in creating pieces of art using a number of textile techniques. During the sessions we will cover: felt making and needle felting, machine embroidery (including the use of water soluble film); weaving using some recycled materials, basic printing and also the use of heat guns, man-made materials and a variety of media to create some interesting effects. This is a creative and fun course where you will produce a portfolio of samples as well as finished pieces whilst having the opportunity to try some new techniques.

Produce original clothing by not only designing the garment but also creating the fabric out of which it is made. During this course we will use a number of textile art techniques to create a piece of fabric that has been, painted, printed, embroidered and embellished. You will learn some basic dressmaking techniques and be shown how to make simple patterns for your creations.

This course will help you to create a sketchbook full of ideas and process to move your work forward with a more professional approach. All levels are welcome from those suffering from ‘blank page terrors’ to more experienced artists who need an external input to revitalise their approaches.

This course considers the approaches that abstract artists use to develop their practice, You will follow some simple strategies to allow you to experiment, interpret and explore your own preferred process in a variety of media, including paint and print, with support and advice from the tutor. Suitable for all levels of experience.

Drawing and painting can be innovative, exciting and feed the imagination. This life class is for students who are prepared to discover new and interesting ways and means of working from a life model. You will be encouraged to experiment with traditional and what might seem to be unorthodox materials. Through group discussion students will benefit from exchanging discoveries. An easy introduction to the use of mixed media and various ways of drawing and painting. Each week you’ll be talked step-by-step through techniques suitable to the media in use to produce a finished artwork. Working from a varied range of still life objects just be willing to give it a go and let go of any fears, you are freed from all decision making and it’s designed to be fun and free of any pressures Materials will be kept to a minimum but we’ll be looking at ingenious ways of using and mixing them.

Learn how to knit a variety of stitch patterns and create samples that can be used to make scatter cushions or put together to make a rug, throw or blanket. We will explore garter stitch, stocking stitch, moss stitch, cable and Aran patterns, Fair Isle and lace stitches. Suitable both for beginners and those with some knitting experience. Drawing through Portraiture Tutor: Catherine MacDiarmid The human face is one of the most challenging and arguably the most difficult of things for the artist to represent. This course provides a good foundation in the principles of mark-making and drawing, and an insight into the subtleties of the structure of the face and head. Conveying character will be taught using a number of drawing methods and materials and the second term will see the introduction of colour and paint. The course is suitable for all abilities. While constructed collagraphs allow extensive experimentation with surface texture and shape, the addition of carborundum grit allows exciting experiments with tone and density of colour. Using the winter woodland as inspiration, an improvers watercolour workshop exploring working from sketch to finished piece. The focus will be on drawing for painting, composition, colour mixing and the building-up process.

Autumn Colours Tutor: Frances Winder Students will explore colour for paintings inspired by found objects and sketches in the forest and the surroundings. Some understanding of the dynamics of colour are part of the workshop, you will have the opportunity to try different media and methods, creating original and exciting pieces during the day. Grizedale Forest in Mixed Media Tutor: Thuline De Cock Let’s get inspired by the environment and get creative using things found in Grizedale. Students will have the opportunity to collect and sketching in the forest to create an exciting collage using what we found in combination with all sorts of drawing and painting materials.

Line and Wash in the Woods Tutor: Lynda Gray Create expressive lines and marks inspired by the forest using a variety of drawing tools. We will be using both waterproof and water-soluble inks and will explore combining with watercolour to create lively and engaging images.

All levels are welcome.

This is a one-day workshop for anyone interested in learning about the traditional techniques used in Rag Rugging.

Explore painting the magic of natural and manmade light at night – moonlight, firelight, abstract neon lights and even fireworks. An improver’s watercolour workshop covering the abstract qualities of the subject matter, resist and masking techniques, painting subtle and colourful darks and working with a restricted palette.

This workshop provides the opportunity to make unique necklaces and bracelets from sterling silver (and a variety of other materials such as copper and found items) that will make a statement! Several chain styles will be demonstrated, and participants can use these techniques as a platform to design and make their own chains. This workshop is open to participants with some jewellery making experience, such as soldering and wire work.

Through painting abstract comes the ability to learn more about what paint can do. Spend a day experimenting with colour and pattern making on copper. This one day workshop will introduce enamelling skills to beginners and show how colour and patterns can be incorporated in metal work.
