GORGEOUS

GOWNS

T

hroughout history, women have tried to make their wedding gown special to suit the occasion and to make the beautiful bride even lovelier to look at.

To this end, designers use silk, velvet, satin, lace and fabrics woven with gold and silver. Additionally, many of today’s gowns have sequins, pearls, rhinestones and other gems that glitter and sparkle in the light. This season, gowns come in white, ivory and gold, as well as a variety of colours or coloured embroidery. Choosing your gown is one of the most important decisions you will make when planning your wedding. Make sure you get exactly what you have been dreaming of.

Trendy Textured Fabrics

Romantic Lace

The trend has moved swiftly to texture fabrics. Look for dresses with ruffles, lace, flowers, shredded tulle, satin, sleek, strapless, sparkles with ribbons.

Soft, cascading lace flowers that will sweep gracefully down the aisle.

30’s Sleek Silky fabrics with smooth lines and plunging “low” backs bring us wonderful memories of the jazz age.

Retro Chic Taffeta

Bouquets of lace give this wedding gown traditional elegance tempered with modern flare.

Talk of the Town Tulle

A favourite fabric choice for bridal gowns, which are then cut and stitched into a dramatic style.

Crisply layered to perfection, this is a gown to enhance your individual style.

Etheral Chiffon

Classic Satin

Sheer capped sleeves, edged with sequins and sparkle that reflects its class and quality.

Show off your best asset and choose a dress with a stunning, attentiongrabbing back in silk satin.

Timeless Strapless Exceedingly popular now, but with an A-line skirt and shaped fabric.

Sassy Sparkles For the bride that wants to be the centre of attention, with sequins and crystals set the scene with glamour and drama.

CREATE YOUR

WEDDING BUDGET RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THE M.C.: • Setting up the receiving line • Making sure all audio equipment is working • Direct special guests to the seats • Announcing the Bride and Groom’s arrival • Introducing yourself and the head table • Announcing grace and dinner • Conducting the speeches after the first course and making sure the head table had wine or champagne prior to the speeches.

o keep your costs under control it is important for couples to create a wedding budget. On average, a 200-guests wedding can run $25,000 or more, which is an incredible amount. The first step is to sit down with your families. Find out how much they will contribute or if you are going to foot the bill yourselves. Take a realistic look and the style and size you are planning for your wedding. The bigger and more elaborate you want, the more the costs increase. Controlling your guest list helps, but this

is also a time to remember that this event is about family and friends. Do some research and estimate your costs. Then use your imagination. There is a lot that can be done with a lot of imagination and a little work. List out all the items you need...dress, invitations, reception hall, honeymoon. Make sure you do all the math. Alter the figures as needed, making sure your wedding checklist and budget is up-todate. Carry your checklist with you to help keep you organized. You will be surprised how a little homework can make everything run smooth.

MAKING THE

MAGIC HAPPEN COMING UP WITH YOUR WEDDING STYLE AND THEME This day should be one that is close to your heart. It’s what you have dreamt about since you were young. 22

W

hen a couple envisions their dream wedding, it is really their wedding style or them that they are creating. You need to consider the season you are getting married in, the size of your guest list and your personal taste and interests. Formal or casual is your first consideration. A fairy tale or formal wedding has a traditional church ceremony followed by a lavishly decorated reception, complete with band, wedding cake, several courses to your meal, and most certainly

dancing the night away. A simple or more casual wedding could be a backyard wedding or a sunset cruise on a lake. A casual wedding theme may lack in extravagance but it more than makes up for it in its light-hearted atmosphere and intimacy. Overall, your wedding style and theme should be a reflection of your tastes, your interests and what you imagine this day to be. This day should be one that is close to your heart of what you have dreamt about since you were young.

THE PERFECT WEDDING

ITS ALL IN THE DETAILS… INVITING DESIGNS

o often brides are so stretched for time and organization materials that they often overlook a lot of the ‘perfect’ wedding details. Your save-the-date announcement followed by a beautiful wedding invitation is just the beginning of the special ‘stationery’ details that will make your wedding unforgettable.

S

Your Ceremony Reserved signs Let your guests know that those in the wedding party and closest to the bride and groom will be seated in the closest seats, thus helping your ushers seat everyone in a timely manner and avoiding any ‘oops, I didn’t know’ embarrassment by an early arriver.

Custom Programs Introduce your bridal party and explain in detail your ceremony. If you are getting married in a church, hall or outdoors, sound can be a problem for those seated middle to back of the crowd. A program helps everyone ‘follow’ the ceremony and no one is left wondering ‘what’s happening now?’ Programs are also a beautiful accent detail. While a lot of decorating goes into the reception site, very little usually occurs at the ceremony site. Accenting your programs with your wedding

23

PLANNING colours, and adding details like satintied ribbon adds the finishing touch to your ceremony. Beautifully presented programs are also a wonderful memento for your guests.

Reception Table cards A beautifully laid out table seating display lets your guests know that you have been thinking of them and have taken into consideration which are of your reception would suit them best.

Special ‘stationery’ details that will make your wedding unforgettable.

EVERGREEN STATIONERS

Place cards & menus Dinner tables adorned with personalized place cards for each and every guests and menus displaying what have so carefully chosen for your guests to dine on are details that add an element of pampering for your guests.

Thank-you Cards

INVITING DESIGNS

Saying ‘thanks’ is the most important correspondence you should make with your guests. Many have traveled, taken time off work or missed holidays to attend your wedding. Formal Thank-you Cards let everyone know that you truly appreciate what it took for them to attend you most special day. Ordering your thank-you cards in advance, even before your wedding takes place ensures that you will get to them sooner and your guests will be flattered at how promptly you’ve thanked each and every one of them. Thank-you cards are the last design element to your wedding. They should also carry your wedding colours and follow through with the theme of your wedding. —Kyla Knight, The Scroll Shop Inc.

hink pale, ice maiden bouquets of white of soft pastel colours with crystals, pearls, beads and diamante. Think vibrant, striking, bold bouquets with rich red and opulent orange and tied with satin ribbon. Most importantly, your flowers need to reflect your personal style.

Choosing Your Bouquet Your bouquet needs to compliment your wedding gown. Small Formal Bouquets are for: • The petite figure. • The simple, elegant gown. • A traditional gown with a modern slant to it. Tear Drop Bouquets are for: • Providing balance to the fairy-tale bridal gown that is fitted at the waist with a full skirt. • Adding a finishing touch to the traditional, classic gown. • Creating the illusion of a slimmer figure as the bouquet helps to draw the eye downwards. Large Hand-Tied Bouquets are for: • Adding impact to a striking, modern gown with clean lines. • Detracting from problems areas you may want to hide. • Creating a strong, bold impression. Small Hand-Tied Bouquets are for: • Complimenting a bias-cut gown. • To have an understated look. • Adding balance when you are of medium height.

Check with your floral designer for the right flowers for each season. You'll want your floral arrangements to last through the entire day’s festivities, so choose wisely.

Schedule several appointments with the florist of your choosing... make sure to take pictues of bouquets you like... take swatches of the colours you are trying to match so the flowers co-ordinate with your overall theme or the bridesmaid dresses.

Co-ordinate the timing of your flowers at the appropriate place... make sure there's a fridge or a cool area to store them... check to make sure there are pins for corsages and boutonieres that you need to remember to order for those special people that perform wedding duties.

t Bridal Fantasy, we get many requests for ideas for wedding hair. It seems that many brides have problems deciding on what hairdo to choose to reflect the style of the wedding gown. So we asked the award-winning hair team at Elysium, who created the stunning updo on our magazine cover, to create some styles on our models for our wedding gown shoot. See if you can get some inspiration from what we have to show!

The Modern Bride When your gown is clean, simple and modern, a classic French twist can look stunning. Make sure the twist is pinned in tightly with a good helping of hairspray.

The Breakfast at Tiffany’s Bride This look is typical of Audrey Hepburn and the 60’s. Add a jewelled pin for some bridal adornment. A clean and architecturally beautiful look.

The Classic Bride A traditional upstyle with some contour and drama to it. A tiara is the perfect proportion to this polished style. You will definitely need a hairstylist that is an expert in doing updo’s to get this look.

The Red Carpet Bride Elegance and design can set the tone for your big day and make you feel like royalty when your hair looks like this.

6 MONTHS BEFORE: Decide on your look and colour.

The Romantic Bride You really need shoulder length or longer hair to achieve these soft, loose curls. If this is your dream, you can also add hair extensions to achieve this look. Fresh flowers could be a great accent.

The Rock ‘N Roll Bride A fresh twist with a hint of rock ‘n roll glamour. This look is achievable with shoulder length hair and the right hair products.

The Fairy Tale Bride Gorgeous riots of curls create this sensational bridal look. Feminine yet bold, this look creates a statement.

3 MONTHS BEFORE: A major trim and conditioning treatment. 1 MONTH BEFORE: Have your rehearsal run. Bring pictures, your tiara and veil and any other adorning items you will wear in your hair. This is a trial run so make sure to let your stylist know exactly what you want (take a picture so you will know what your photographs will look like). 2 WEEKS BEFORE: Final colour treatment (if so desired) and trim. If your previous trial run did not work, now is the time get all the kinks out!

THE BIG DAY: Plan lots of time for your hair and make-up. Stay calm, it’s your day so enjoy it! 37

STRESS BUSTERS Don’t stress out think about the positive things that are happening in your life – your partner – your love – your family – the honeymoon – the big day. Prepare yourself mentally & imagine that you both are going to be cool, calm & collected, not letting problems ruin this time or your mood. Each side of the family usually has a cantankerous individual. Often it is a good idea to talk to them beforehand to make sure they are on their best behaviour. As a couple a good habit is to practice some quick 3 minute mediations – with a few good deep breaths it makes it easy to center yourself and let minor upsets pass.

H

ere are some tips that will ensure you look picture perfect when you say “I do”. When choosing your look, consider the time of day and the time of year. You need to consider your skin tones and hair colour. Remember as most of you are wearing white or ivory, your makeup need to be a little more dramatic so you do look washed out.

Your Face: Wear a tinted moisturizer if you are not used to wearing foundation Layer translucent powder over your foundation for a long lasting effect and to help prevent shine.

For a healthy glow, apply blush to the apples of your cheeks, then lightly sweep your forehead, nose and chin. Don’t use a shimmer highlighter as your pictures will get a reflective shine.

Your Eyes: Lash out – use fake eyelashes for eyes that really stand out. Mac makes a half set that accents your eyes but doesn’t overdo it. Use soft, neutral tones for your eyes, with no heavy, dark liner but won’t be out of date later. Never skip mascara. A couple of coats of mascara define your eyes, making those photo opportunities perfect.

Use soft, neutral tones for your lips. Use a lip liner then same colour as your lipstick. The colour of your lips (warm or cool) depends on the colour palette you choose. If you want the focus to be on your eyes, use a lighter lip colour. Dot a bit of gold eye shadow in the center of your lips and cover with. gloss for a golden look.

efinitely a closer cut and slimmer silhouette is how Derks sees the grooms’ look for 2006. The silhouette is complimented by the personalized accessory approach, according to staff, which involves a variety of coloured vests, scrunchy ties, bow ties and a wide variety of shirts. Neckwear is changing. You will see ascots, euro-ties, scrunchy ties and bow ties. Formalwear is becoming individualized and user friendly. Trends are brought about by the movies and the onslaught of the combo of 60’s movies and Victorian movies we have seen lately. Couple opt for a look that ties into the wedding theme they want. Ties, vests and cummerbunds have all made their way around the colour palette with brides and grooms to compliment the wedding party. Some refreshing changes in colours are espresso, mocha, gold, along with some new vibrant oranges, blues and greens, just to name a few. You will be able to find whatever colour you desire, or you can go with the classics like silver and black. Whatever style or colour you choose, make sure you choose something that you are comfortable with and matches your overall wedding theme. When in doubt, just pick something that reminds you of 007, Bond, James Bond.

he groom is no longer just an extra at the wedding, he is main stage, so it is important he has his own individual look. You want him to stand out from his groomsmen. Now, there is available to the groom a wide selection of retail and rental accessories that can customize his look. For those all-important finishing

touches check out: • Custom shirts with initials • Cufflinks: hundreds of elegant and unusual links and studs • Custom ties to co-ordinate with the brides gown • Elegant vests in brocaides and silks So whether you are looking for something to add depth to your wedding suit or to make you strut your stuff, look for accessories to help you stand out in the crowd.

Shirts are chosen to compliment the neckwear appropriate to your special day. Shirts can come in ivory, white and black, and should reflect the bride’s attire. The look you have that day will be remembered in the photographs you’ll forever cherish.

FIT TO BE WED S

top the all or nothing thinking. For most engaged women, it’s unrealistic to think you are going to be able to make it to the gym everyday, especially if this has not been a habit in the past. To start, make a realistic schedule. Choose a few activities you enjoy, like swimming or walking and decide what day you will do them. To stay motivated, it often helps to exercise with others, so join an indoor cycling or pilates class. It may also be worth your time and money to hire a personal trainer once or twice a week to help you maximize your efforts and access your progress. Often trainers will offer group rates, so you and your groom can get fit together, or why not get the entire bridal party looking lean? On days when you do not have a group activity scheduled, turn to the four exercises below that are easy to do in the comfort of your own home. All you’ll need is an exercise ball and work out mat available at any fitness equipment retailer.

EXERCISE 1 TUMMY TIGHTENER Areas Worked: Abdominals. Description: Lay on the ball facing up. Your hips and lower back should rest on the ball with your shoulders slightly off the ball. Place your hands behind your head. Your elbows and arms should lay flat parallel to the ground. Slowly contract your stomach muscles and raise your head and shoulders 2 to 3 inches off the ball. Do not pull with your arms; all motion should be due to the contraction of your abdominal muscles. Hold the pose for 2 seconds and slowly lower back to your starting position. Do 2 to 3 sets of 10 repetitions. ALL PHOTOGRAPHS SHOT ON LOCATION BY GRANT OLSON PHOTOGRAPHY AT DEFINING EVE

49

Bf

H E A LT H

EXERCISE 2 BOOTY BLASTER Areas Worked: Legs, buttocks & inner and outer thighs. Description: Stand with your feet about 3 inches apart. Step forward with one leg into a deep lunge (make sure that your front knee does not pass your toes) while keeping the other leg straight. Push yourself back to the starting position. Keep your abdominals tight throughout the exercise. Your knee and toes must be pointed forward at all times. Do 2 sets of 8 repetitions for each leg.

EXERCISE 3 AMAZING ARMOR Areas Worked: Arms, shoulders & chest. Description: Place your hands close together on the ball with your arms straight (do not lock your elbows). Your body should be completely straight and your core engaged. Slowly lower you body bending at the elbows until your chest is about an inch from touching your hands. Slowly push back up to the starting position. Do 2 sets of 8 repetitions.

EXERCISE 4 BODY BEAUTIFUL Areas Worked: This exercise works wonders on the entire core. It enhances stability and strength in the shoulders, abdominal region and buttocks. Description: Start by placing your palms on the ground shoulder-width apart. Balance on your toes in a straight-armed plank position as though you are about to start a push-up. Your body should be completely straight and your shoulders should remain directly above your wrists. Transfer all of your body weight to one hand as you reach up toward the sky with the other. Hold the pose for 2 seconds and slowly lower back to your starting position. Repeat on the other side. This exercise can also be done with your knees resting on the ground. Do 2 sets of 8 repetitions.

he biggest diamond is not necessarily the most expensive or the best stone. It is very easy to spend a lot of money on a small, perfect diamond rather than a large, flashy one. Four elements determine the quality of your stone. They are cut, carat, colour and clarity. For most girls, it is all about the sparkle.

Cut This can greatly influence a stone’s value and sparkle. Most common is the brilliant cut stone, which has 33 facets around the crown and 25 around the base.

Carat The bigger the stone, the more carats or weight of the stone.

Colour White stones are highly prized as colour reduces sparkle, however, pink and yellow stones are becoming popular.

Clarity The more transparent the stone, the more it sparkles.

Over the past few wedding seasons this trend is showing up more and more when it comes to picking out the perfect shoe. Girls get to have fun, so why not have fun with your footwear? Shoes are unlike any other bridal accessory, as they do not typically reflect any important tradition, so go ahead, be a shoe diva! Other bridal accessories, like jewellery are often a gift from someone special or a family heirloom that has been passed down from generation to generation and therefore limit the amount of personality a bride gets to express. The shoe is the one and only outer accessory that allows the bride to go wild! elegant in her white gown while also showing that she likes to have a little fun when her shoe peeks out from beneath her dress. Shoes with sexy lace detail, extreme points and extra high heels may also hint at the lovely lingerie that lies beneath the beautiful gown. The Cinderella glass slipper is making a comeback in 2006, as dressy shoes adorned with Swarovski crystals are all over the wedding runway. Other shoe trends include thick ribbon lacing that ties around the ankle, large bows on the back of high heels, seductive dark satins and antique-style pearl broaches that rest on the tips of your toes. When picking the perfect shoe do keep comfort in mind, but most importantly make sure your wedding shoes make you want to have fun. Remember, it’s your wedding, so be a diva for the day.

Shoes are unlike any other bridal accessory, as they do not typically reflect any important tradition...

our bridesmaids are not just there to look pretty: Chosen carefully, they provide an invaluable support system for the stressed bride. The ladies you choose to stand by you for your special day are there for many different reasons, but one thing they all have in common is that they are very precious friends. Throughout the months of preparation for your wedding, they will help you through thick and thin, and because they are so honored to be your bridesmaids, will stop at nothing to ensure you achieve your dream wedding. On the months leading up to the wedding, the focus is on the bride, while the bridesmaids busily plan your shower and bachelorette party, help you with your wedding invitations and give you someone to lean on when things get hectic. After all the months of planning, how do you thank these fantastic ladies? When deciding how to thank everyone, consider the following thoughts. It is nice to have a quiet time to spend with

your bridal party so that you can relax while giving them each a gift. Don’t forget to write them each a nice card, as this will give you a chance to reflect in advance about what it is that makes each individual friend so special. You could throw a pajama party and give them each a new pair of cozy pajamas. Why not treat them all to a free yoga session and give them each a new yoga outfit? There is nothing wrong with personalizing each gift to match each bridesmaid’s unique personality, however, make sure to spend approximately the same amount for every gift. A number of spas will offer a preferred rate for a group booking, so help the ladies look their best for your big day by buying them all a complimentary pedicure or facial. Your bridesmaids will be delighted with whatever you choose. Remember, in the months leading up to your big day, you can never say thank you too often.

BRIDESMAID GOWNS Simple and Elegant Styles - elegant simplicity is the current look. Slip and sheath dresses are popular as they flatter lots of figure types. These dresses can also be re-worn later as cocktail dresses.

A-Line A-Line dresses look good on many body types. The hottest styles are two tone, two piece floor length styles. Separates are popular too. The new bridesmaid dresses feature numerous strapless and backless styles, many with shawls or wraps, which make them acceptable in church but removable for the reception. Prints are also finding their way into many lines. For informal or outdoor weddings where you don’t want a solid colour, prints are a good choice.

Colour Tangerine, coral, sea green and lime sorbet colours are popular. You will also find a lot of pastels like pink, yellow, green, blue, lavender and peach. Other popular choices are fuchsia, electric blue or purple. Orange and flamingo pink are big colours too.

groom-to-be spend on the wedding and engagement rings?

ANSWER: Absolutely… there is no reason why he can’t. This is an important day for both your father and stepfather so they should both celebrate your day accordingly.

ANSWER: You need to consider your budget and need not go overboard. Traditionally the groom should budget two – three months’ salary on the ring. Buy a ring that speaks from your heart.

QUESTION: What is the correct order for seating mothers and grandmothers? ANSWER: The groom’s grandmothers are seated first, followed by the bride’s grandmothers. Next is the groom’s mother and finally the mother of the bride. This is usually done five minutes before the ceremony. QUESTION: Is it proper to invite guests to the wedding but not the reception? ANSWER: Your guests attend your wedding to show their love and support. They also purchased a wedding gift. You should invite them to both your wedding and reception. QUESTION: How much should the

QUESTION: We are inviting guests from overseas to our wedding. Are we responsible for their accommodations? ANSWER: Your guests are responsible for their own accommodations. You can, however, forward hotel rates and information to them. QUESTION: What does the groom’s family traditionally pay for when it comes to wedding costs? ANSWER: “Who pays for what” varies nowadays from couple to couple. Traditionally, the groom’s family pays for the engagement party and the rehearsal dinner, all wedding corsages, boutonnieres and the bride’s bouquet.

They also cover the wedding license, minister’s fees and the transportation to the airport. Many grooms’ families also offer to pay for the alcohol at the reception. With all the costs involved in today’s weddings, any financial help is appreciated. QUESTION: Who is the most appropriate person to give the bridal shower? ANSWER: Traditionally this honour goes to the maid/matron of honour. QUESTION: My partner (we’ve been living together for six years) was asked to be a best man for his friends’ wedding. Should I, as his partner, also be in the wedding party or do I attend as a guest? ANSWER: Your partner being chosen as the best man does not mean that you will be in the wedding party. The bride chooses from her closest friends and family. You still will be able to attend as a wedding guest, which will still be very enjoyable.

t one time, bridal registries were considered too materialistic and lost their true meaning in the seventies. But today, bridal registries have become not only fashionable, but also welcomed by guests and the recipients alike. There are also registries that are very different from what was chosen for weddings years ago. For those of you who still believe bridal registries are for those social climbing couples who select china, flatware and crystal, think again. Today’s bridal registries are more likely to include dishtowels, shower curtains or camping gear in the wish list. We know exactly how wedding guests feel when faced with the ‘what do we buy them’ dilemma. Everyone buys a gift, but wouldn’t you rather give them something you know they need or like? Too many people fall into the trap of buying for themselves rather than the lucky couple who end up getting

saddled with four teapots or towels that don’t match their bathroom. Today’s bridal registries let you get an idea of the couple’s choices and you can always customize to suit your personal preference. Remember, a registry is more of a guideline of the couple’s preferences. For example, many people go into a store and discover the china pattern is beautiful but not in their gift budget. Instead, choose complimentary items such as table linens that mirror the china’s colour scheme. This way the registry list is not as imposing. A good registry planner will

help guests consider various price points to accommodate their own budgets. When choosing a company to register with always check out the level of service the store will provide to you and your guests. This should include providing a 1-800 number or website for our of town guests who can have the gift wrapped and delivered to the reception. The registry should also take time with each guest who comes in to buy a gift, walking them through the store and pointing out the items that the bride and groom have already selected. When you as a couple decide to arrange your registry, we recommend putting aside two – three hours to do a comprehensive job. It allows the person setting up your registry to get to know your tastes and needs. An obvious example is if the couple plans to entertain formally or not. This creates a whole new list of products and gadgets that the couple, in the midst of wedding preparations, may never have thought of. Shower gifts are not left out of a bridal registry. edding cake decoration today has become a virtual art form. Word of mouth is a great way to learn about fabulous local bakers. It is also important to find a baker who will let you sample their cakes, fillings and icings. Most bakeries have albums or online pictures of their cakes so you can get an idea of the styles they offer. Cutting the wedding cake and the pictures that go with that event are always a wedding favourite. Your guests will admire the artistic creation you’ve chosen as well as its excellent taste. Cutting that first piece of cake represents your commitment to sharing your life together. Feeding each other a piece of wedding cake symbolizes love, honour, and respect. When choosing your wedding cake the possibilities are endless. The number of guests determines that size of the cake. The design and style, on the other hand, are completely a matter of your own personal style.

BLOOM’N MEMORIES

WEDDING MEMORIES THAT LAST A LIFETIME

Frozen In Time If you want your flowers to stay beautiful long after your wedding, consider freeze drying them. This process involves removing moisture from fresh flowers to preserve the flowers close to their natural state. Freeze drying can be done before or soon after the wedding. Freeze dried flowers make great centerpieces. Find a funky glass container or vase and have the most perfect flower from your bouquet freeze dried. Give one to all of your bridesmaids as a gift; it’s not too expensive and a fabulous memento to remember your wedding by.

trinkets from the biggest day of your life. The best way to go about organizing your book is to sort everything you have for your album into categories. An example of a simple layout to follow includes the following categories: Getting Ready, The Ceremony, The Bridal Party, The Groomsmen, Dinner, The Dance, Cutting the Cake, Happy Ever After Honeymoon.

Preserve Your Pictures What better way to remember your entire wedding experience than to sit down and make a scrapbook filled with photos, messages, cards, quotes and THE URBAN SCRAPBOOK

Instead of a guest book, have guests write a message for you and your husband on a piece of small fancy paper that you can intermingle with pictures in the layout. Save a napkin, some petals from a centerpiece, and scraps of pretty wrapping paper to add a decorative element to your book. It really doesn’t take as much time as you may think and it is very fulfilling to have compiled the book yourself. There are many scrapbooking stores with trained consultants that can help you organize your material and pick the perfect decorations and album. So get planning and when the big day is over, start working on your album. It will be a wonderful post wedding surprise for your new husband!

SHARING A MAGICAL LIFE B Y WAY N E L E E

BELLA PHOTOGRAPHY

“When we first meet and fall in love, we get a glimpse into, and feeling for, the interior world of our partner. We inhale the fragrance and magic of the other’s essential being. Then come the problems of life and one day, sometimes sooner and sometimes later, the magic is gone.” Hal and Sidra Stone, Ph.D Authors of Partnering A New Kind of Relationship

I

nitially, the magic in a relationship can be defined as sparks flying, butterflies in the stomach, longing to be with one another, and an intense attraction. In order to sustain and develop this magic, a solid foundation of partnership based on honesty, friendship, respect, appreciation, adoration, compromise, and commitment must be present. I will share a magic formula (Motivation, Awareness, Goals, Imagination, Choices) with you that will outline some ideas and strategies to help you keep the magic in your relationship and continually grow with your partner.

Motivation The underlying reasons for our actions. Wanting to have a relationship because of passion, desire and love as opposed to need, obligation, and fear allows you to achieve intimacy, live with more joy and magnify each other’s life experiences.

What are the reasons for you being in or wanting a relationship? When you answer this question, you will gain valuable insight into yourself and the role you play within your relationship. Here are three things you can do to live with more love and passion: 1. Attitude of gratitude. This is one of the most powerful feelings you can have. Take one minute in each morning to identify what you are grateful for in your partner. Before you go to bed, tell your partner at least 3 things that you are grateful for in them. 2. Support your partner’s passions. Choose one activity that your partner loves to do and take the time to share in it with them. Do this weekly. For example, join your partner at the gym. 3. Value inventory. Ask each other the question, “What is important to you in this relationship?” Once you have identified what your partner values,

85

the worst, you will start to attract it in your life. How you see your relationship is what you start to attract. It is important to focus on and create pictures in your mind of what your ideal relationship looks like. What does your ideal relationship look like? Here are a few things you can do to stay focused on what’s powerful, positive and productive in your relationship: • Think of a time when you experienced a strong connection with your partner and re-live this experience in your mind and body… feel what you felt, hear what you heard, and see what you saw, etc. BELLA PHOTOGRAPHY

write them down and post them where you can see them each day. This will help you stay focused on what is important in your relationship.

Awareness Having a realization. The more you know and love yourself, the better able you will be to unite and grow with another. What do you like and/or dislike about yourself? Answering this question will help to reveal your level of self-esteem. Having a higher level of self-esteem allows you to unconditionally give more of yourself to your partner. Having a lower level of self-esteem inhibits us from honestly sharing. Fear and self-limiting beliefs contribute to a low self-esteem. The following are things you can do to increase your self-esteem: • Create an awareness journal for yourself. Identify at least 5 things that you like about yourself, write them in your journal, and review daily. • Create a positive affirmation (ie. “I am calm and confident”) that replaces any self-limiting belief (ie. “I am not good enough”). Any time you experience a limiting belief, replace it with your positive affirmation. • Accept yourself as whole, complete, and perfect right now. If this is a challenge, then act as if you are whole, complete, and perfect right now.

86

Goals The aims and targets that you want to achieve. Growth comes from wanting something different, better, or new. Goals initiate this process and allow you to grow individually and as a couple. Three years from now, what has to have happened for you to be happy about your progress? Sharing your answers with your partner can reveal whether you are heading in the same direction. How can you support each other’s goals and establish shared goals? The following are things you can do to design your life together: • Share individual and relationship goals. Once a year, take the time to share what spiritual, financial, intellectual, physical, and professional goals you each have. Establish both short (up to one year) and long term (beyond one year) goals. Your goals should be SMART (specific, measurable, ambitious, realistic, time deadline) goals. For example, we will take a Caribbean cruise together by August 1, 2006. • Develop an action plan. Determine what steps need to be taken weekly, monthly, and yearly. Write down the action plan and post it where you can be reminded daily.

Imagination Your plan making department of your mind. Whether you imagine the best or

• See you and your partner already having achieved the goals you both set. • Act as if you already have the ideal relationship.

Choices The decisions you make which help determine your destiny. You have a choice to be in a relationship and cause the relationship you desire to happen. What choices are you making that nurture and create your ideal relationship? Here are some action steps to help you make powerful choices and manifest your ideal relationship: • Take absolute responsibility for the choices you make in the relationship. Live by your word and avoid using excuses and blame. • Create and choose a set of agreements with your partner which reflect each of your highest values (ie. honesty, commitment, respect). • Make a choice to openly communicate with your partner as the relationship changes and evolves (positively or negatively). • Ask your partner how they like to be loved and love them in this manner every day. For example, your partner may feel loved through touch, notes of acknowledgement, loving words, gifts, etc. My wish for you is to create the magical relationship you truly desire filled with joy, passion and excitement. —www.waynelee.com

EMPOWER YOUR MARRIAGE

• From the bathroom, with the door open, and continue a conversation? (Frankly I think all bathrooms should come with a jet strength air replace system and a very loud radio!) • By yelling and having my head spin around because I was having a bad day? • And think the worst of that person first, for having spoke incorrectly?

BELLA PHOTOGRAPHY

Points to Ponder from the ‘Pettiest Woman in the World!’

I

’d like to ponder on some points that I feel contribute to a rock solid resilient marriage.

Being married nearly 20 years does not make me any kind of expert, but I know a few things that have certainly contributed to it being a joy-filled solid partnership. Do we treat each other like strangers? I constantly check myself with this question.

88

Would I greet a stranger: • Impersonating Santa Claus because I have a face full of ‘Nair’? • Dressed in my favourite 20-year-old tshirt nightgown that enhances my ‘Michelin man’ look? • Sporting a weeks worth of stubble on my bare legs? (Frankly my legs replace the need to know martial arts. One swipe with them, and my victim would be without a patch of skin!) • With breath that would melt a person’s eyebrows?

Let me clarify my last point. My husband Lloyd is a man of few emails. It is not his favourite mode of communications. Knowing this, I was thrilled and surprised to see an email come in from him. He talked of his undying love for me and ended with big bold letters that said: ‘You are the pettiest woman in the world’! We are only in control of two things: how we give communication and how we receive it. I could have taken the email verbatim and been hurt and angry that he would think I was the pettiest woman he’d ever met, or I could laugh and love that he took the time to send me a message, even if spell check wouldn’t catch the missing ‘r’ in pettiest. (It was missing wasn’t it, Lloyd?) Respectful humour helps build endurance in our relationship. Humour is definitely one of the most powerful gifts Lloyd and I give each other to make it through the many hills and valleys we face hand in hand. No matter the valley, I can smile, because in my heart, I know my husband will always think I am the: ‘pettiest woman in the world!’ (Giselle Yanish is a proud wife and mother, and also a motivational speaker that loves to help others help themselves be the best they can be.)

EMPOWER

FINANCIAL SECRETS BY KELLEY KEEHN

GRANT OLSON PHOTOGRAPHY

Kelley Keehn, lecturer, personal coach and author of The Prosperity Factor, uncovers the “inner games” we play surrounding wealth. As a financial professional for over a decade, she’s witnessed first hand the problems individuals and couples have with money and has developed a fun and practical guide to making changes to our money mindsets at a fundamental level. For more information, visit Kelley at www.TheProsperityFactor.com or call her at 1 877 488.8760.

S

hould couples have financial secrets or should the commitment of marriage tear down the walls of covertness in a relationship? While independence is important in any relationship, is it more important than trust and open dialogue?

I have seen secrecy ravage the relationships of numerous couples that I have coached in my financial practice. Some couples will hide and camouflage accounts from one another and often times the account goes undetected until their death; even the children and often their financial advisor are unaware of such accounts.

Whether a couple is financially abundant or struggling to pay the bills, spending for seemingly selfish reasons can create as much resentment in a relationship as concealing an account from a spouse. Certainly a partner may justify their excessive spending, announcing to the other, “well, I work harder than you” or “I deserve to go shopping and to the spa, but you’re not allowed to buy that new fishing rod because we just can’t afford it”. Once a dictatorship has been established by one or both of the partners concerning matters of spending, bitterness and feelings of acrimony may develop.

Control, fear and lack of communication are often dangerous ingredients for any relationship, especially a loving marriage. If either spouse feels it important to control the other with money matters (spending or the lack there of), or the other is harboring thoughts of fear, such as, “will we have enough”, trust and communication starts to break down. So what’s the solution? I urge couples to let down their fears and worries about money and spending and encourage a fun and easy game that will create open dialogue with each other. This game can be played for a few months, a year or a lifetime and will, overtime, create a spirit of abundance and financial esteem in the relationship and individually as well. To read the entire article, and for a complete explanation of the Couples Banking Game, along with a fun couples questionnaire, visit www.TheProsperityFactor.com

Our poor moms! They’ve spent so much energy over the years doing their best to raise us, and now there is no time to relax as it’s time to help plan their daughter’s wedding! Whether we like it or not, our moms always want to help and often they get so bogged down making sure we’re delighted, that they run out of time to pamper themselves.

Look Your Best

It’s often nice to have the parents of the bride and groom coordinate their outfits with the rest of the wedding party. Moms can choose to purchase a dress in the same shade as the bridesmaids’ dresses, or instead, highlight the wedding colour in their accessories and corsage. Obsessions Couture now has a fabulous new mother of the bride line of gowns. Another wonderful trick to look your best on the big day is to get a facial the day before. The facial will revitalize your skin and help you to relax.

Feel Your Best

For out of town weddings, it a great idea to find a tranquil place to stay. Bed and breakfast venues are often very relaxing, quieter and homier than your regular hotel. Glenora Bed & Breakfast located near Edmonton’s quaint High Street, and the Calgary Historic Bed & Breakfast at Twin Gables are a couple of wonderful options. A second idea to help you feel your best, make sure to schedule time prior to the wedding to relax. Perhaps an afternoon at the spa with your soon to be wed daughter may be the perfect idea to escape the wedding madness that occurs as the date draws nearer.

TIPS TO MINIMIZE STRESS ON THE WEDDING DAY •

Hire a catering company to bring a ready-made breakfast for the family and bridal party

Have your hair stylist come to your house

Pack your make-up bag and purse the day before

Prepare a few lunch snacks the day before

SUIT SOS Many grooms are now wearing suits today as they view their impending wedding as a suit-buying opportunity. They want a suit that is both dressy and versatile. The right suit can convey a sensational statement. Men look great in suits. Handsome is definitely the word that comes to mind. There are lots of fabrics to choose from... like wool super 120’s or trendy linen for resort destination weddings. The key is picking the right tie that picks up a colour in the bride’s ensemble. For example, matching the bride’s bouquet or gown. Tone-on-tone ties are a fantastic fashion trend. The suit can be tan linen with an ivory shirt and a bright tie. Black is definitely the tone-on-tone look that men are looking for in a suit, with elegance but less formality. Shirts in white or black with a strong emphasis on a stunning set of cufflinks, a great boutonnière and an amazing tie will ensure your wedding look is bang on for your big day.

“Tie” Your Wedding Suit into Your Wedding Week: • Buy a black suit that can be easily transitioned into four different outfits. • Suit with shirt/tie for that special day! Matching, of course, the colours of your wedding! • Take your suit blazer and wear it with a sweater or linen shirt for the rehearsal. • For a more laid back, relaxing meet and greet with the family, wear denim, a polo shirt and your suit jacket. • And for that intimate one-on-one date leading up to the special day, an all black look adds a touch of class to the evening.

MENSWEAR Tips on Bringing Your Suit into Everyday: • Wear your blazer with a sport shirt and sacred blue denim. • Layer your jacket with a James Pierce Hoody. • Buy a neutral colour (blue, navy, grey, brown) as an initial investment and build from there. • Find a nice v-neck t-shirt that can be tucked in and pair up with a nice belt. This will give casual a refined feel. • When in doubt, wear all black. This is the most flattering on most men. It is also very easy to put together a fashion conscious look.

reating exceptional table arrangements can create a special ambiance for your reception. Here are some amazing ideas for you to try when it comes to decorating your reception tables: Simple Chic… try a tray of shot glasses with a single flower, sprinkle some glitter on the flowers and then surround the tray with tea-lights (make sure they are unscented). Fairy Magic… accessories such as crystals, fairy lights, and flowers in tall shot glasses can create some special magic for your table décor. Passion for Petals… a small vase crowded with sweet smelling roses and surrounded by rose petals adds a touch of romance to your table. Ray of Lights… for a spectacular outdoor reception, decorate with colourful

Tips To Take Your Wedding From Average to “Award Winning”! Planning any event, large or small, requires juggling skills, negotiation savvy, and most of all creativity! One of the best events you can use as a formula is the Canadian Music Awards – also known as the Junos. At the 2004 Junos our beautiful rental items helped to turn the enormous Shaw Conference Centre into a warm, intimate setting. With creativity and some inspirational items, you too can make your event truly extraordinary. • Do your homework. Make sure to ask your facility coordinator what they provide and what they do not, so you know where to make changes and fill in the gaps. Also, be sure to ask the

exact time you are able to enter the room to set up and decorate. Many facilities cannot guarantee your entrance until the day of your event, in which case, ahead-of-time preparation and a delegation of willing volunteers is key. • Success is in the details. Many brides only think to decorate the head table, the cake table, and the guest tables, but, to ensure the room looks pulled-together and beautifully coordinated, don’t forget to add a special touch to the guest book table, the DJ station (if renting coloured linens), and the drop tables. • You get what you pay for. Don’t always assume the cheapest deal is the best way to go. Make sure you are comparing apples when calling rental companies for pricing. Ask specific questions so you know exactly what

you are paying – or not paying – for. Are the linens floor length or shorter? Are they a heavy damask or plain? And, ALWAYS go and look at your choices before making a final decision. • Why should you rent? At the Junos there were many music stars that arrived in gorgeous limousines. They didn’t own the limos, instead, they were enjoying the limos for the evening. Renting components for your wedding is just the same! You are able to enjoy the experience of top of the line products at an affordable price. By making your event an experience, your guests will walk away with memories of fun, laughter and connecting with others in a unique and inviting environment. Remember, 10 years from now people won’t remember the food they ate; however, they will remember feeling like a STAR!

WEDDING SPEECHES 1. Plan your speech 2. Keep it short

O

nce the ceremony is over and the photo session is finished, say good-bye to formalities and get ready to let loose and have a blast! Planning the reception entails a few key decisions. The venue where the reception is held is the biggest decision you’ll make. Other important decisions you’ll make include food, drinks, music, master of ceremonies and décor.

3. Make sure your speech has something for everyone 4. Fun is good, embarrassing is not 5. Thank and toast the right people 6. Practice makes perfect

GET CREATIVE WHEN PICKING YOUR VENUE Rather than choosing a pricey reception facility where you may be obliged to use their catering and décor services, why not hire an independent catering company and professional decorators. Often, experienced decorators can turn a regular and less expensive venue into a fantasy world. Hiring decorators and a caterer will add a special flare to your affair and allow you to create an amazing atmosphere based on the theme of your dreams.

FOOD FOR THE HUNDREDS Every couple seems to have a little trouble deciding between a buffet or having a served dinner. Keep in mind the following when making your decision. If the wedding is over one hundred and fifty, buffets are generally more manageable. Guests can pick and choose what

they want to eat and eat as much as they want. Organize a simple and fun game to determine the order the tables go to get their food. This is a great icebreaker and a great way to get guests chatting at each table. If you’re keen on having a served dinner, make sure to offer the guests a vegetarian option and give the caterers contact information for guests that have allergy concerns.

7. Maintain eye contact 8. Stay calm 9. Have fun

DRINKS When it comes to alcohol, for most couples the biggest concern is cost. At most weddings, the bar is either open, or couples may opt to have a toonie bar to help cover costs. Any alcohol served with dinner, typically wine, should definitely be complimentary. It may also be nice to have an open bar for the cocktail hour while guests arrive and after dinner switch to a toonie bar.

If you’re looking for places with character, you must take a look at the Charming Inns of Alberta website (www.charminginnsofalberta.com). The Hotel Selkirk is part of the Charming Inns Association and is a wonderful location for weddings. This venue takes you and your guests back in time, and offers you sleigh rides, carriage rides, bonfires and much more when you book the facility for a weekend wedding. Guests will stay at a preferred rate and the entire hotel will be reserved for just you and your guests!

WINE

C

hoose the wine yourself and don’t leave it until the last minute. Take some time to go to a reputable wine merchant and try a bottle or two with friends before you place your final order. Some wine merchants have tasting facilities in their stores so take advantage and taste them there. Your caterer will more than likely offer to take care of the wine order for you, but you will pay an added fee for each bottle they buy for you (usually around 15% or more). On the other hand, if you are dealing with a good retailer, they can usually offer a discount (around 10%) when you buy full cases. Remember to ask for your case discount! Unless you have full cases left over after the celebration, don’t return the unused wine. Save it for home or to give as gifts throughout the year. Champagne and sparkling wines are the traditional wines used for toasts and celebration. Remember real Champagne only comes from the Champagne region in France. This will cost about $40 per bottle and more for premium Champagne. At that price, most Champagne is very good, but some great names available in Alberta are: Nicolas Feuillatte, Lanson, Taittinger and Moet & Chandon. If you choose sparkling wine (from$12 per bottle) look for

“Traditional Method” or “Methode Champenoise” on the label. This is your assurance of quality. It means that the wine is made using a second fermentation in the bottle just like Champagne. Segura Viudas is a great choice for traditional method sparkling wine. You might want to reserve the Champagne for the head table and serve sparkling wine to your guests. In this case, make sure the bubbly for your guests is served in flutes (tall thin glasses) on trays by your catering staff. This way, no one will know they aren’t getting ‘real’ champagne and will save you money too, as some people (inexplicably) don’t care for sparkling wine at all. When choosing your table wine, try to keep to wines that will complement your menu. Your retailer can help you with this. Avoid highly oaked whites or reds that are so ‘big’ they will overpower your food. Some great wines at very good prices are coming from Argentina right now. You might also try wines from Chile or Australia for good value for money. Finally, make sure the wine will be served in a good-sized glass that tapers in at the top. Champagne and sparkling wines should only be served in flutes. While the selection of wine for your celebration is an important detail, it should also be an enjoyable process for you. Choose your retailer carefully, and have fun.

A good rule of thumb for quantities is 2 - 3 five-ounce servings per guest (unless other alcohol is being served). That’s about five glasses per bottle. 116
