In Memoriam: Cowgirls Historical Society Founder A founding member of the Cowgirls Historical Foundation, Julee Brady passed away from Stage IV carcinosarcoma, a rare form of uterine cancer with which she was diagnosed in March. She's survived by her husband, Pat, and children Shanda, Marjon, Kelsee, Kellan and Taryn.
Julee Brady
Julee’s daughter Taryn Brady Hale shared the news of her passing yesterday in a Facebook post, which reads: It is with heavy hearts, yet firm testimonies that we announce the passing of our angel mother, Julee Brady. She peacefully passed Saturday night surrounded by her five children and her husband of 43 years after a valiant fight against Stage IV carcinosarcoma. We feel such peace at this time flowing from our knowledge of Heavenly Father's divine Plan of Salvation. We also feel humbled and supported by the outpouring of prayers and love we have received.
The Cowgirls Historical has also worked closely with RFDTV and The Cowboy Channel. Believing that the networks and CHF share a common purpose — to preserve, celebrate and educate others on agriculture and cowboy (and cowgirl) culture — Julee became a close friend of Rural Media Group and was always first to volunteer her time to be a part of RFD-TV/ TCC events. She and the CHF have joined the RMG team for the National Finals Rodeo, RFD-TV's The American, and the Rose Parade — with Julee leading the way, always with a warm smile, positive attitude, and willingness to roll up her rhinestone embroidered sleeves when needed. Everyone at RMG who worked with Julee loved her, getting to experience firsthand her kindness, generosity, and beauty both inside and out.
Raising her family in Arizona, the Sunshine State, Julee referred to herself as the "domestic engineer" of the "Brady Bunch" — which includes her husband and five kids, as well as a handful of dogs and horses. She also enjoyed being active in her community, giving many hours of her time to local organizations and schools through the Cowgirls Historical Society and her church and while serving as Mrs. Arizona 1994–1995. For many years, Julee also worked with Signature Modeling Agency as a modeling coach and acting talent. Co-founding of the Cowgirls Historical Society
14
combining her passion for service work with her love of Western culture — was one of her proudest accomplishments . Exemplifying the cowgirl spirit, the CHF assists charities and organizations with fashion shows, hostessing, auctions, skits, education programs as a way of giving back to their communities. As their website states, "It is well known that people who serve others, end up serving themselves with a more content and happier heart." The Cowgirls have been pleased to volunteer with the Phoenix Fire Department, Florence Crittendon, Catwalk for Charity, Kicking Up Kindness Buckaroo Ball, National Day of the Cowboy, Literacy & Educational programs, Special Olympics, Phoenix Suns Charities and other wonderful organizations.

Center, is set to open at the end of September. “We are so excited to be partnering with Farnam to bring this new arena to life,” remarked Steve Stallworth, General Manager of the South Point Arena and Equestrian Center, “Farnam Arena gives us the opportunity to host new events and expand the events we know and love. Farnam has always been a great supporter of South Point, and we couldn’t think of anyone better for this partnership.” Farnam Arena becomes South Point’s fourth and largest competition venue in the equestrian complex at 300 by 135 feet, totaling over 40,000-square feet. Standlee Premium Western Forage Donates Product to COVID-19 Impacted Animals in Southern California
Standlee Premium Products, owner and manufacturer of the Standlee Premium Western Forage® brand, recently donated a truckload of Premium Alfalfa Cubes for horse and cattle owners in Southern California financially impacted by the Coronavirus pandemic. The donation is being administered through ASPCA’s The Right Horse Initiative.
“These 1,100 bags of our high-quality Alfalfa Cubes will hopefully help ease some of the burden and stress on owners to care for their beloved animals,” said Dusty Standlee, CEO, and President of Standlee Premium Products. Mr. Standlee continued, “Animal owners and their families have enough on their plates during this unfortunate situation and we hope this helps ease some of their burdens.”
As part of its COVID-19 Relief & Recovery Initiative, the ASPCA established an equine feed distribution center in Los Angeles to help equine owners care for their horses and other animals during this crisis. The Right Horse Initiative, a program of the ASPCA, was alerted to the needs of Los Angeles-area equines by one of its adoption partners, which reported an increase in calls for help from horse owners. As hay shortages are prevalent and much of the land in the Los Angeles area is dry and desert-like, local horse owners expressed concern over limited options for feeding their equines as they face economic hardship or other challenges as a result of the COVID-19 crisis. Since April, over 3,500 bags of feed have been distributed, and nearly 1,300 horses in the Los Angeles area have been positively impacted.

Teeter on 'Yellowstone,' is Michael Landon's Daughter
In season 3, Yellowstone shook up the bunkhouse with the addition of the rough and daring new ranch hand, Teeter, played by actress Jennifer Landon. Landon was definitely ready for the challenges she would face working on the Dutton family ranch; she had been trained on soap operas after all, which are basically a boot camp for actors.
26
As the daughter of the beloved TV actor Michael Landon, Landon was destined to end up a TV star. She grew up in the prestigious Brentwood neighborhood of Los
Angeles, California and her first acting gig was playing a little girl on her father's show Highway to Heaven after he had already made a name for himself starring in Little House On The Prairie and Bonanza. Though her father passed away when she was only eight years old, she continued acting. She even studied at the prestigious New York University in New York City before returning to make a name for herself in Hollywood.
SEPTEMBER 2020
Landon went on to win three consecutive Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Younger Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Gwen Norbeck Munson in the CBS soap As The World Turns. She also went on to play Heather Stevens on The Young and the Restless and made appearances on House, Days of Our Lives, Banshee, Chicago Med and Animal Kingdom. But there is no doubt that Landon will be known for her current role on the Paramount Network's hit TV show Yellowstone opposite incredible actors, such as Kevin Costner, Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser. Teeter was a quick fan favorite as soon as she first appeared on the Dutton Ranch. As Landon tells Decider, it's unclear if she'll ever top the role. "Yellowstone's amazing. I'm a lunchbox actor. Each job is a job fought for and a job got. So after all that hard work, to get something like Yellowstone and to get to work Taylor Sheridan, who I have tremendous respect for, and with actors of this caliber, it's a no-brainer. Plus, I don't know if I'll ever audition for a part as cool as Teeter for the rest of my life. And I'm kind of okay with that." Unfortunately, Landon didn't get to learn the ways of the west at "Cowboy Camp" like most of her castmates, but that didn't stop creator Taylor Sheridan from getting her adequate training before (quite literally) throwing her out there with horses and cows. "Since I joined in episode two, I did not have the luxury of going to the wonderful cowboy camp. Taylor hooked me up with his horse guy out in L.A. Then, when I got out to set, I worked with one of our wranglers, and she got me somewhat comfortable on a horse. I was on a real roping horse! It was a quick learning curve, but the days that I learned the most oddly were the days that you're on set and they yell, "Action," and you just have to go and there's no thinking about it anymore. You're like, "I need to keep this job," and so you just go."

Bob Avila INTERVIEW
Q) What did it feel like to see your-
self in the opening of Yellowstone and in an important scene of the show? A) Well when you film you never know if your scenes will be used or hit the editing room floor! So it was really cool to see what they did in the opening.
Q) Wow, Yellowstone really put
working cow horse on the big-stage with millions of viewers. After spending much of your life promoting NRCHA, how big an impact can that exposure be for the sport and how did it make you feel? A) It was fantastic exposure for the Cow Horses. We have said all along that Cow Horses would be such a good fit for the show based on a working cattle ranch. We have had tons of positive feedback from all over since the episode aired.
Q) Capturing the Worlds Greatest
Horseman title twice, is an incredible feat, just how tough it that event, and what have been your keys to winning? A)The World’s Greatest is probably my favorite event. It is definitely the most challenging making all 4 events work.
I’ve always approached it with a very methodical mindset. I didn’t ever try to win one leg of it, I just tried to stay as high as I could in every event. The most challenging part is not only keeping your mental mindset right, it is keeping your horses healthy and in the right mindset as well. Your horse must be prepared properly when you arrive, over schooling at the event is really not an option.
Q) Your parents Don and Pat encour-
aged involvement in horses, was that a big help getting started? A) From the time I was born horses have been involved in my life. My mother even gave lessons to a very young Carol Rose when she was pregnant with me! So to answer your question "yes" it was a very big part of my beginning.
Bob & Dana Avila with Kevin Costner
Q) After moving into the Scottsdale/
Rio Verde area and settling in, how do you like it? A) We absolutely LOVE Arizona! My wife and I have always liked it here so it was just an easy transition to move over here. Rio Verde is just a beautiful area with so many quality horses and talented trainers. We really enjoy it.
Bob on the set with the Crew
Q) What sage advice can you share
with our readers that wish to become horse trainers, and show horses for a living? A) If you are going to be a horse trainer always have a plan B in the background. It is not an easy life, it’s a very good life, but you better love it if you decide to do it. It is a 24/7, 365 day a year job.

“Jimmy Hurdstrom” Q) How did you get on the
show? A) That is a fun story, I was originally called to audition for the role of Kayce Dutton. After reading the script I said to myself, I am more of a Jimmy, I can relate to him. I don’t see myself as playing an ex Navy Seal, shooting guns, saving people. So I made two audition tapes, one as Kayce and a second as Jimmy and my agent submitted for both characters. When I got this job, it felt like a dream come true for me, I understand Jimmy. He felt like dreams are impossible, what it is like being an outsider and how do you break in, not being part of a family or purpose. So we experience what it is like to be part of something, part of a family, build an identity and to be part of something bigger. Become a cowboy and part of a lifestyle he and I simply did not understand nor ever thought we could achieve. Jimmy heard about Yellowstone and had fought his whole life to be part of of something, to belong to something. 36
Q) What was your first horse
experience? A) On the show I had my first horse experience. Before shooting started we went to Cowboy Camp for a week. We lived and worked with horse trainers up in the mountains of Utah for 6 days. We all bunked and lived together just like on the show and our characters grew from that bonding experience and it also grew on the show, because of that time spent together - we just meshed. One of the great joys of this job, is the spending time with the horses. I had a romantic idea but no contemporary idea of what it really takes to be a cowboy. Every time we work with the horses I learn from the horses. I learn to be a better rider and these horses are so well trained, they are actors as well and I learn to be a better actor working with them. I learn so much from my horse that I work with on the show. Q) The “Bunkhouse Boys” rose in popularity, how do
you feel about the new-found fame? A) We all get along great and have become friends, so the flow is natural on set. Taylor sees that dynamic and writes to evolve our roles in that direction. Working with Ian, Denim and the others with the scripts we get is pure joy! We are supposed to be friends and we are. That often does not happen, so when it does it is amazing. I am so grateful to have great co-workers. Taylor writes towards these dynamics that are already evolving. We are lucky to all come together as a family, just like on the show, including the living together in the bunkhouse. We live together on and off set when shooting.
Q) How has your role evolved
in the show? A) Exciting - I knew nothing about Rodeo, Ranching or what it takes to be a Cowboy. I am really, really lucky to learn about that world. Taylor’s characters are not one dimensional. Jimmy
SEPTEMBER 2020
is just trying to survive, then it’s whats next for me to discover? I have actually been learning about this new world of cowboys at the same time as Jimmy! And I also want to say that Eden Brolin is brilliant to work with, I am so lucky to work with her!
Q) Rip rules the roost, how
has it been working with Cole Hauser? A) Incredible! Cole is the most brilliant actor. He has more range than anyone I have worked with. And no one would expect that, including the comic scenes, he is actually funny!. Cole is a natural leader. It is a joy to follow his lead. Jimmy and Rip are similar in that I am learning from Cole and Jimmy is learning from Rip. I feel really grateful for the audience, they make it great. The generosity, the feedback, it has been amazing. I want to say “Thank You’ to the fans and the Yellowstone audience, they are so fantastic. The warm embrace from the fans and the Rodeo/ Cowboy community has been unbelievable!
BOYS
Forrie J. Smith “Lloyd” Q) How did you get on the
show? A) I was wrangling for Hell or High Water, the movie. I was hired as a wrangler for that movie, not an actor. I was in the pen working the horses, getting to know them, working them with my 50’ rope. Taylor walked up to me and introduced himself, it felt like we knew each other forever, so easy. He said, “I am writing a Western and you got a part in it”. I said Yeah Right, I have heard that before…….. sarcastically. Taylor looked me in the eye and stated ”You never have heard that before from me” and I said Right and nodded my head. I have had a blessed life, being a wrangler on movies and working on Yellowstone has gifted me with work that I love, the love of the horse.
Q) What was your first horse
experience? A) When I was really young, before my Dad died, so I was pretty small. My Mom and Dad bought me two ponies to train and sell. I got that done and we bought a POA named “Bad
Billy”. He was the greatest and I taught him to do everything! My father never got to see that, so it was bittersweet. That started it all, and my Mom went with me to all the rodeos in the beginning, she would drive me there. The scene where we are running that herd of 200 head thru those pastures in Season 3, that was scary. I was not sure how it would go. Things like that can go wrong in a minute. But boy was it cool, it was one of the greatest things I ever got to be part of, and for it to be on film is awesome for the World to see. Currently I am working on a book about my experiences with horses and that is exciting. I have a lot of life left in me. Living this life makes me a better actor, horses make me a better actor, horses make me a better person.
Q) The “Bunkhouse Boys”
rose in popularity, how do you feel about the new-found fame? A) They are the comic relief for the show. We all get along on set, we have become friends. I
watch the other guys grow into the roles, become better riders, learn the ways of the cowboy, that’s really cool to experience also. We really mesh on set, it has been a real blessing working with Taylor, Paramount, the cast and crew. I couldn’t wish for a better group of people to work with.
Q) How has your role evolved
in the show? A) We have great dialogue. My line at the Rodeo grounds with Jimmy, “Are you a Willow or an Oak, I am a Oak”, is a great one. They want to make that a T-Shirt now! I try not to get too emotional about Rodeoing, it was hard to hold back the tears when we were filming the scene when I tell Jimmy I miss it, miss the Rodeo life. I can travel anyplace and never have to worry about a place to stay. I can show up and these great folks always have my room ready. One time, in my early 40’s, I had a flat hauling some horses from Montana to Utah. It was funny because I actually had
SEPTEMBER 2020
the money to pay for a tow truck, that had not happened very often. The guy showed up, hauled my trailer and set the horses up for the night, towed in my truck and had me stay with his family until I got back on the road. To this day that family treats my like one of their own, I can stay there anytime I am going that direction and on the road. We are a family on set, Rodeo is a family, talk about a gift. A Blessed Life. I was just in Cave Creek, AZ last November to judge a Bronc event there. I love Cave Creek, Scottsdale and Arizona. I wrangled in South Tucson for many years.
Q) Rip rules the roost, how
has it been working with Cole Hauser? A) Cole and I are friends. I stay at his house whenever I need to be in California. He has a ranch with horses. His wife and family treat me as one of their own. Cole is the real deal. Working with him, makes me a better actor!

“Colby”
“Teeter”
Q) How did you get on the
show? A) My agent had me audition, and I did not hear back for 8 months! Taylor Sheridan called me personally to tell me the news. I was so excited and joy filled to get this opportunity! Taylor is different, he does it different. He treats you like a whole person. Taylor writes my lines phonetically. I read the lines like he writes them and that is how Teeter’s vernacular was created. I go with it, and he writes it like I make it sound Taylor created Teeter. Q) What was your first horse experience? A) As a little kid we rode horses all the time. My Mom took a bad fall off a horse and became afraid, so we had not ridden since then. So until now, it has been a long time since I had ridden a horse. I have a great stunt woman, she makes me look very good. I hope someday I can hold my own on a horse! My father passed when I was little, but he told me, “Don’t be full of shit, be better as a human being” I remember that clearly. My character Teeter, she bypasses all the crap, Teeter does not have that 38
much personally, but she is honorable. She does not have that much screen time, but Taylor wrote such a gift, he created this huge story-arch for Teeter.
Q) The “Bunkhouse Boys”
rose in popularity, how do you feel about the new-found fame? A) It is a 100% catapult job. My Mom loves the show, and she has never “Loved” my other work as much as she loves this! I have over 500 episodes on TV under my belt on other work that I have done and she loves this more than anything else I have ever done. The other day, she watched a Teeter scene for 20 minutes, over and over and was just laughing. She is my biggest critic and Teeter is her favorite.
Q) How has your role evolved
in the show? A) For me I definitely felt she was an outsider and then became one with the group. There are so many parts, they flush her out out as a real person. Teeter is incredibly loyal, hard working, not afraid to do anything asked of her, she wants to work. She was
Q) How did you get on the
show? A) I got onto Yellowstone pretty much through the same process that every actor goes through, which is a few auditions and the producers call back! I found out about Yellowstone because of a film that I was working on previously called Chickasaw Rancher when one of the fellow actors had mentioned that one of his good friends was getting ready to create, write and direct this new show and that I should definitely get my reps to reach out and see if I could get an opportunity to audition… And the rest was history.
Q) What was your first horse experience?
a loner type, but we learn she has so many dimensions. At first she may come off as one dimensional, but this character is certainly not one dimension.
Q) Rip rules the roost, how
has it been working with Cole Hauser? A) I love Cole Hauser! Teeter loves Rip! He is fun, funny and a phenomenal actor. We have an amazing group of people. A
SEPTEMBER 2020
A) I’ve had several horse experiences. However, there has never been a horse experience quite like the experience that I’ve had with horses on Yellowstone, which has been absolutely amazing! I would say one of the most unique horse experiences that I’ve had was during this last season, which is season three, where we ran 200 wild horses over several acres in a field! And that is something that I never thought I would get an opportunity to do let alone getting an opportunity to do it on television. Q) The “Bunkhouse Boys”
rose in popularity, how do you feel about the new-found fame?
huge part of this is picking the right people, Taylor has a real sense for it. He writes with so much heart, and we pick up on that energy. He does not write a normal script just to get one out there. The horses are such soulful creatures and they give so much back. They change the way you are and who you are when you ride. When you ride a horse, it changes you forever!
Ian Bohan A) The bunkhouse boys are
really something special! I don’t think any of us really expected it to take off in the way that it has been… But with a great team at Paramount Network along with Yellowstone they really put together an amazing show and getting the opportunity to be with other great cast members in the process such as Jefferson White who plays Jimmy and Ian Bohen who plays Ryan. We really just get an opportunity to be who we are and play off of each other during the filming of these episodes. Since we usually spend so much time together when we’re not filming, (because, often times our schedules lineup with each other) we really have a great chemistry and so it’s really a beautiful thing to see that the audience has responded with such positivity.
Q) How has your role evolved
in the show? A) Colby, in season three, really gets an opportunity to begin his own storyline. He obviously has a very vivacious, bright, and wild interest this season in Teeter, who is played by Jennifer Landon. And so I think this is a really awesome opportunity where the audience gets a chance to see Colby operate outside of the
bunkhouse. For me as an actor it’s really awesome to have this opportunity to begin to explore a completely different avenue of the character and there’s so much more coming the rest of the season. I’m really excited for everyone to get to see the craziness that Colby is about to go through for the rest of season three.
Q) Rip rules the roost, how
has it been working with Cole Hauser? A) Cole Hauser is phenomenal! You know, often times you will hear stories about actors and you never know what stories are true stories or are not true, but the one thing that’s always been very consistent is Cole. Whenever someone brings Cole Hauser’s name up is not only that he is professional, but how giving and caring he is! He is the type of actor that brings out the best in everyone around him, but offsite he is the most laid-back, relaxed individual and it’s really been so awesome to have had the opportunity to work with someone of his caliber. I’ve learned a tremendous amount from him not only on set, but off of it as well. So I would say anyone that gets an opportunity to work with him, you’re really in for an awesome experience!
“Ryan”
Q) How did you get on the show? A) Taylor and I had worked together before, it started when we both had parts on Walker Texas Ranger and then later on Sons of Anarchy. He hired me for Wind River and then the Sicario role was created for me. It was small but so worth it! During the Sicario shoot, Taylor said to me that he had written a new show and had placed a part in it for me and asked if I wanted it? I said “OF COURSE” as my reaction. Q) What was your first horse experience? A) Every Summer I spent it on my Grandfathers ranch in Wisconsin. He put me to work, always riding a horse, and it sure has come in handy. We look good in the saddle with some help from the crew, but we do work on our own riding skills whenever we can on set. It is a huge part of our roles, so we want to be the best at riding as possible.
Q) The “Bunkhouse Boys” rose in popularity, how do you feel about the new-found fame? A) I think that it was really smart for Taylor to write a bridge between the action, love and drama with sort of a comedy break. We work to make it fun and playful. It is a small but necessary component. We will keep building on it, help it to grow. It gives a break to sort of like live there on the ranch, in the moment. We hope to see it go 2 to 3 more seasons.
SEPTEMBER 2020
Q) How has your role evolved in the show? A) I loved when the story element came thru. I get to be in the bunkhouse, work on the ranch, and be a Livestock Officer! For example, the relationship with Ryan on the show many times is unspoken. When I play against Kayce Dutton, we do not have to talk to communicate. The characters are getting more respect from Rip and the others. I attribute this 100% to the creator, to have cast the show with the right people in each role. Many times my role is non speaking but it is still meaningful. Q) Rip rules the roost, how has it been working with Cole Hauser? A) You have no idea how jolly and fun he is! The dynamics on set, always a smile and laugh. He starts the day with a smile every day holding his cup of coffee, and he says “Good Morning Gorgeous” to me. What a great way to start each day! Ryan is not always germaine to the storyline, but he is a force in the show in many ways, and in many scenes. This much weight on each character is too much, so we work to not look like a soap opera. Ryan always has something going on, and I try to make sure of it. Ryan makes a difference in scenes even if he does not speak.

JIMMIE PAUL/TENLIGHT Memorial Open for Two Rein
A Little About Jimmie Paul’s Life
Three generations of the Paul Legacy... Jimmie’s son, Lane Paul, Jimmie Paul, and Jim Paul, Sr.
Jimmie L. Paul was born Sept. 10, 1957 in Sacramento, Calif., the oldest son of Jim Paul Sr. and Betty Collier. Jimmie’s younger brothers are Randy and John. Born into the horse business, Jimmie was influenced by his exceptionally talented NRCHA Hall of Fame father Jim Paul, Sr. Along with brother Randy and NRCHA Hall of Fame stepmom, Dema Paul, the Pauls know how to make and be a champion, and it was the way of life Jimmie so loved. Jimmie has three children: Jamie, Lane and Lex, and one grandchild. His son, Lane, is continuing in the family horse business, currently working in Arizona. Growing up in Arizona, Jimmie played football in high school but with his horsemanship skills, he went on to apprentice with another NRCHA Hall of Famer, Don Dodge. As his career was taking off, Jimmie had some serious health issues which nearly cost him his life, and over the years he required both a liver and kidney transplants, the latter being donated by his brother Randy. As soon as he was physically able, Jimmie was back in the saddle daily training new champions. Jimmie had an incredible work ethic. As the years progressed, Jimmie Paul was admired and respected by those in the industry. He made and rode champions and his non pros were champions, 13 in all. Among them were: Mandy Somerville, Mike Doud, Laurie Boaz, Deah Hessian, Marilyn Harris, Chantz Stewart and Andi Kiese. When Jimmie’s trailers arrived at a show, people knew they were going to have to ride hard to place, because the Paul Barn’s horses and riders were there to win. It was not unusual to hear Jimmie saying “That horse needs a new job,” and so horses in training at Jimmie’s barn had many talents, including reining, roping, cutting, cow horse, ranch riding and halter. 40
Jimmie Paul rode a lot of great horses but as he often said, “You are blessed to have one, maybe two, great ones in your life,” and for him, Tenlight, a 2001 sorrel stallion, was one of those horses. Sired by the great Grays Starlight and out Docs Poco Ten, Tenlight not only excelled in cow horse but also team roping, reining and performance halter. Tenlight was purchased by the late Sherri Somerville and is now owned by Amanda Somerville. His show life with Jimmie lasted six exciting years. Competing in everything from the NRCHA World’s Greatest Horseman, to many other NRCHA and AQHA events, Jimmie and Tenlight were always a threat to all competition. Among their honors were: NRCHA World Championship Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Bridle and Open Hackamore championship titles; 2006 NRCHA Open Two Rein World Champions; 2006 AQHA World Show Jr. Heeling Open Top 10; AQHA World Show Working Cow Horse Open Top 15; 2006 AQHA High Point (3rd place) Open Jr. Working Cow Horse; 2007 AQHA World Show Open Sr. Working Cow Horse, 3rd place; 2008 Open Superior Dally Team Roping, Heeling; 2009 AQHA Reserve World Champion Open Sr. Working Cow Horse (only to be beaten out by his brother, Randy); 2009 AQHA Open High Point Sr. Working Cow Horse, 3rd place; and 2009 AQHA Open High Point Working Cow Horse, 5th place. Tenlight has now gone on to producing a successful crop of offspring. It has been said Jimmie could make a winner out of nearly every horse he touched, and was known as the “Man with the Velvet Hands.” He was also lovingly known as “The Silent One” by his close friends and clients, for he was a man of few words! Tragically, Jimmie’s life was cut short in April of this year due to a fire in his home in Arizona. He is sorely missed by all, and his family and friends have joined together to honor his life with the “Jimmie Paul/ Tenlight Memorial Open Two Rein” at the Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity.

‘Yellowstone’ Season 3 Finale Crushes Viewership, Sets New Record Yellowstone is continuing to take down all its competition in TV ratings with its Season 3 finale. The Paramount Network series drew in 5.2 million total viewers in Live+Same Day. The high octane season finale brought in one million more viewers than any other episode in the show’s history, Deadline
reports. According to Nielsen, last night’s episode made it the most-watched cable telecast of the year. Compared to the season 2 finale, the show’s numbers increased drastically for Sunday night’s installment. The finale performed better in all of the key demographics. Yellowstone was up 81% in P25-54 , up 71% in P18-49, and up 84% in P2+. Not only did the series post
remarkable numbers on cable, but also Yellowstone’s popularity on social media continues to rise. On Facebook alone, Season 3 ranks first for views and engagements. The show beats out the rest of cable TV, except for sports, live events, and
5.2Million Viewers
news. In February, Paramount Network renewed the series for a fourth season. Yellowstone’s executive producers include John Linson, Art Linson, Taylor Sheridan, Kevin Costner, David C. Glasser, Bob Yari, and Stephen Kay. ‘Yellowstone’ Stars Talk About the Season 3 Finale Since Sunday night’s finale, several of the stars have spoken out about what’s to come. Cole Hauser, who portrays Rip Wheeler, addressed his character’s relationship with Kelly Reilly’s Beth. He thinks the two can end up together in the long run. Check out what Hauser had to say here. Wes Bentley, who plays Jamie, also opened up about Season 3 of Yellowstone. After the major reveal about Jamie’s parentage, the 41-year-old actor says his character is “now on the lookout for himself and himself only.” Check out more from Wes Bentley here. In addition to the actors dishing on Sunday’s finale, the fans are also blowing up social media with reactions.

PROVEN LEADERSHIP
When I was first elected, there was a demand for fresh perspectives and new leadership. County government has a role to play in creating the right conditions for economic growth. We’ve accomplished that through balanced, simplified regulatory policy and smart spending. I’ve advocated for a government that optimizes its resources through innovation, partnerships, and fiscal discipline. My priorities have always been: • • • • •
Open and transparent county budgets Live and archived board meetings Responsible spending that reflects needs, not wants Focus on our core duties like investing in public safety Strategic planning to create a shared vision of county leadership
I’m proud to be recognized by local business leaders, like the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce, for what we have accomplished. I would appreciate your continued support and I hope to earn your vote.

All levels will run concurrently in each class and awards will be presented from first through 10th place.” The tentative schedule will be available soon at www.aqha. com/worldshow once it is fully vetted by the AQHA Show and Professional Horsemen’s councils, World Show Subcommittee and other key industry stakeholders. Entry information for the 2020 Farnam AQHA World will be posted in early September. One rider can ride up to four horses in each stakes class. The rider can ride multiple horses at the same level during the class. Only the highest test of the level can be ridden. All tests and rules will follow respective AQHA, Western Dressage Association of America, United States Equestrian Federation and United States Dressage Federation rules. These points will be added to the total score; then it will be divided to create the percentage. Riders will be placed based on percentage. “We are so appreciative of what Dr. Cronin brings for health and pain relief as an alternative to traditional medical treatments!” Melinda Carter
“I had an extended recovery period after an emergency surgery and I was unable to ride. In April 2019 I went on a trail ride with my family and strained my hip flexor. In search of options, I started physical therapy which only brought limited relief. In Feb. I started prolotherapy and spinal manipulation with Dr. Cronin, and now am pain free and am back to riding! My husband has just started prolotherapy and spinal manipulation and is quite pleased after just one treatment! Our daughter is also receiving chiropractic adjustments from Dr. Cronin. We are so appreciative of what Dr. Cronin brings for health and pain relief as an alternative to traditional medical treatments!”

Turf Paradise will not hold
races this year due to coronavirus
Owner Jerry Simms said he did not want to take on the liability of racing during the pandemic, so Turf Paradise, the famed horse racetrack in Phoenix, will not hold any races this year due to the coronavirus outbreak. Owner Jerry Simms informed the Arizona Racing Commission on Thursday that they must decline the proposed 121-day race dates,

Jerry Simms which would have spanned from November to May. In a press release, Turf Paradise officials said "the restrictions on larger crowds at the facility combined with the economic uncertainties associated with periodic closures and necessary social distance requirements make it impossible for Turf Paradise to conduct a financially practical race meet for both the track and the horsemen." About 1,000 people work in close proximity in the stable area, officials said. The racetrack is located in north Phoenix, near 19th Avenue and Bell Road. It has been in operation for 64 years. It first opened its doors on Jan. 7, 1956, two years after businessman Walter Cluer purchased 1,400 acres of barren desert. It went through two owners before being purchased by by California-based Hollywood Park Racetrack in 1994 and multimillionaire Jerry Simms. Turf Paradise was also forced to start giving pre-race veterinary examinations to all horses back in 2019 in an attempt to curb a rise in fatalities at the time. According to the Arizona Department of Gaming, 45 horses were euthanized during the 2017-18 season at the Phoenix track. That same season, 27 horses died from racing-related injuries. The season typically lasts just over six months. The 133-day live meet was originally scheduled to run from Oct. 17 to May 1, 2021. The new schedule was set for Nov. 27 to May 1, for 110 live race days.

Jerry Kimmel 100th NRHA Hall of Fame Inductee
An extremely successful businessman who immersed himself into the horse world upon retirement, not even his vision could have predicted the impact he would have on the reining industry.
Jerry was born and raised in Marshall, Michigan, where he began a business called Kevco Inc. with his friend Bill Everett. Over three decades, the business expanded to become one of the country’s leading distributors of plumbing and building materials and its headquarters were moved to Fort Worth, Texas. It continued to grow and went public in the 90s. Jerry thrived in the corporate world
but after decades of hard work, retired and settled down with his wife, Carmen, on a 225-acre ranch in Granbury, Texas. Shortly after his retirement began, Jerry got involved in the world of western pleasure with trainer Cleve Wells. He may not have stayed with that discipline, but its moniker accurately defined exactly what he got from horses – sheer pleasure. He once stated, “I
Jerry Kimmel retired totally from business. For me, horses are just fun.” After making his mark in the western pleasure pen, Jerry began to pour his heart, soul, and wallet into the reining world. Along the way, his love for horses created a legacy of friendship and goodwill that has seldom been replicated. It all started with one reining horse, Indy Star Dun It, which Jerry showed in NRHA Non Pro competition, but it was soon apparent that one would never be enough. He loved showing as a Non Pro, and a finalist slot earned at an event like the National Reining Breeders Classic (NRBC) would have him bubbling with excitement. Through Jerry’s ability to make friends and the success of his horses, Kimmel Reining Horses became well known to reiners worldwide. His longtime relationship with NRHA Three Million Dollar Rider Tim McQuay and McQuay Stables centered around showing and breeding great horses and ultimately focused on his two beloved stallions, Dun Gotta Gun and Mister Nicadual. His home base, J Bar C Ranch in Granbury, Texas, worked in tandem with McQuay Stables to produce top reining horses. Jerry and Carmen lived on the property and their granddaughter Lindsey Raymond subsequently oversaw much of the breeding and fitting operations. continued on page 72 70

Jerry Kimmel in NRHA Hall of Fame Jerry’s love for the discipline expanded and he became an avid supporter of reining and reiners at all levels. Whether it was an auction for youth activities or a fundraiser for a fellow reiner in need, he was all in. His dream for reining was to have full stands and engaged fans, as he wanted to give others an opportunity to enjoy the horses he loved. Jerry

became involved with horse show production, partnering with Ray Roles to found the Scottsdale Classic Futurity and Quarter Horse Show. Later he joined Colleen McQuay and Anne-Marie Burns in creating Global Reining Sport Group, which produces the Tulsa Reining Classic. He also was a donor to RHF and a member of its Reiners Club in recognition of his unrestricted annual gifts. In 2014, he was honored with NRHA’s Dale Wilkinson Lifetime Achievement Award. A defining moment for Jerry came with the 2006 Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) World Equestrian Games when he paid for Team USA to travel to Aachen, Germany. His son, Greg Kimmel, recalled. “They couldn’t raise all of the money for the trip, and Dad said, ‘We’re going. We’re doing this.’ He told everybody on that team, ‘Pack your bags. We’re going!’” It was the trip of a lifetime. With Tim McQuay aboard, Kimmel’s stallion Mister Nicadual won team gold and an individual silver. It was a treasured honor and a proud moment for the unassuming man who had literally made it happen from behind the scenes. The man who “loved horses and the people who love them” passed away this year at the age of 82 but his impact on the reining horse world will live on forever. Kimmel Reining Horses is still in operation thanks to Jerry’s daughter, Chris Pearce, who relocated the business and its horses to her ranch in Weatherford, Texas, in 2018.

One on One with Wrangler NFR Contestant Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi By Johna Cravens Brittany Pozzi-Tonozzi is one of the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association’s most accomplished barrel racers. She has qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) 13 times. Her first NFR was in 2003, she missed qualifying in 2004, then returned nine years in a row. She missed the top 15 the next three years, returning to Las Vegas in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
74
SEPTEMBER 2020
Just the third barrel racer ever to break $2 million in career earnings, Brittany’s earned two world championships. She’s has won the Wrangler NFR barrel racing average twice, and she’s won the Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo (RNCFR) twice. She and her husband, two-time Wrangler NFR team roper Garrett Tonozzi, married in 2015. He’s a Colorado native while Brittany grew up in Victoria, Texas. The couple live in Lampasas, Texas, where they have a horse breeding business. Plus, their daughter TInlee, who turned three this year, keeps them busy. Brittany was the National High School Rodeo champion in 2002, the year before her first trip to Las Vegas to compete at rodeo’s championships. She attended college at Texas A&M University where she won a National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association regional championship and qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo. She trains barrel racing horses and can choose her mount from several top contenders that she has bred, raised and trained. Brittany is well on her way to earning her 14th NFR berth this year. As of August 1, 2020, she had won more than $80,000 riding multiple horses and is at the top of the world standings. She got her season off to a great start in her home state of Texas winning San Angelo for the fourth time on Katniss (Ima Famous Babe) and then San Antonio for the first time while riding both Katniss and Birdie (Babe on the Chase). She also won both rounds of her bracket at Fort Worth riding Mona (KissKiss BangBang).

2020 YETI World Champion Bull contenders take shape for stretch run BY: JUSTIN FELISKO
When the PBR’s first half concluded in Guthrie, Oklahoma, on May 17, it appeared the 2020 YETI World Championship race had its frontrunner. There was a growing consensus that rising bovine star Air Support was going to be the beast to defeat when the second half revamped in the late summer. Sadly, Air Support passed away unexpectedly on June 15, and that has once again left many of us wondering which bull will step up to claim the 2020 World Championship.
76
SEPTEMBER 2020
“Air Support was not a veteran like Pearl Harbor, but he was that kind of bull that made you pretty sure he was going to win it this year,” PBR Director of Livestock Cody Lambert said last week. “Now it is wide open. My favorite bull right now is I’m Legit Too. He is my favorite to win it, but there is a lot of them that could. Smooth Operator and (SweetPro’s) Bruiser are still there, and I think they are still great.” Defending World Champion Bull Smooth Operator made a case for the throne this past weekend in Bismarck, North Dakota, by bucking off Marco Eguchi in 5.87 seconds for a season-high-tying 46.75-point bull score at the 20th annual Dakota Community Bank & Trust Invitational, presented by Cooper Tires. The effort pushed Smooth Operator into the world No. 1 ranking with a 45.75-point average on his eight best outs. He is 10-0 overall with a 45.40 average score. “He is a great bull,” Eguchi said. “He is very strong on the spin. He kicks hard and deserved to win the event, and I hope to have him again.” Smooth Operator is 10-0 this season after also bucking Eguchi off in 3.93 seconds during the Championship Game of the Monster Energy Team Challenge in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, last month. Eguchi said Smooth Operator felt just as strong in Bismarck that he did in Sioux Falls, where he was marked 45.75 points. Bismarck featured only Chad Berger bucking bulls at his home state event, but the 2020 World Championship Bull race ante will be raised this weekend back at the Lazy E Arena with the Unleash The Beast PBR Bullnanza event on Friday and Saturday. While Smooth Operator will have the weekend off, fellow 2020 contenders such as Chiseled, Hocus Pocus, I’m Legit Too, Smooth Overand SweetPro’s Bruiser will be beginning their second halves at the Lazy E Arena.

The Cow palace has been converted into a temporary animal shelter during the wildfires burning across the Bay Area. So far they've taken in nearly 300 evacuated animals - but organizers say there's room for more. Cow Palace CEO Lori Marshall lists the animals that have been brought so far. "We have chickens, peacocks, llamas, horses, cattle, goats, sheep and one pig." Willy the camel was one of the animals safely evacuated from the fire zone over the weekend, San Mateo County shared on their Twitter. "The horses are herd animals," Steven Ciarametaro, a stable owner said. "They know each other. They want to be around each other, they're altogether here. They can see each other, they can smell each other. They're pretty calm Organizers say this is the first time, in memory, that the Cow Palace has been used as an animal evacuation center. To donate, the San Mateo County Large Animal Evacuation set up a website as well. The center is located on 2600 Geneva Avenue in Daly City.

As I'm sure you all know, northern California, like much of the state, is being ravaged by wildfires yet again, which affects not only people, but also their horses, other livestock and small animals of every kind. The veterinarians at UC Davis are the very best at helping and saving those animals who are injured and displaced by catastrophic events. From now through Sept. 30, 2020 (extended from the original date of Sept. 19), Whiskey Ranch-Horse will donate $2 (two-thirds of the profits from Amazon sales) directly to the UCD Veterinary Catastrophic Need Fund for every paperback sold. Whiskey Ranch-Horse's two books are filled with short stories and musings about the life of an old ranch horse tossed into the land of suburban ranchettes and pet pleasure horses. If you appreciate western humor, short stories, horses and animals, check him out. He is also the very best 32-yearold ranch horse on the entire planet according to his “bucket gal” and owner, so there's that. Kindle versions also available for both books, as well, but are not part of the current fundraiser. Whiskey Ranch-Horse, author of his popular County Island blog since 2010, recently published his second book of short stories — Still Standin on the County Island: Entirely True Tales From a Ranch Horse — Y’all Know the Drill. On July 29, 2020, the Kindle version ranked no. 1 in Horse Care new releases. Still Standin on the County Island picks up where Whiskey’s first book, County Island: True Tales From a Ranch Horse Turned Pet Pleasure Horse, left off, but can also be read on its own. Both books are available on Amazon Kindle (including Kindle Unlimited) and in paperback.

Cinch AZ Fall Championship and Pinnacle Circuit Prepares to Be Bigger Than Ever
Horse people want to show and are getting ready to haul from all over the country to be part of one of the largest Quarter Horse events of the year. With
the cancelation of the American Quarter Horse Congress in Ohio, record numbers of AQHA and NSBA exhibitors have changed their travel plans and are heading to Arizona’s already popular fall show this September. The Cinch AZ Fall Championship and Pinnacle Circuit promise to be a 10-day horse show spectacular running from September 25 through October 4th at WestWorld in Scottsdale. Show management had already expanded the Fall Championship to include a second circuit in response to the pent-up demand of exhibitors who sat home for months in COVID lockdowns. Once The Congress and its coveted futurities were cancelled, AzQHA CEO Doug Huls worked creatively to adjust the schedule to add a full slate of NSBA Futurities with generous added money. Sponsors enthusiastically jumped in, ensuring the shows will be a highlight of the year. The format has exhibitors showing 2 times to 3 judges during the Fall Championship and showing once to 4 judges for the Pinnacle Circuit. Cow horses and reiners will show 2 times to 2 judges during the Pinnacle Circuit. There are Circuit Awards for each, along with over-all high point and best of show awards. The majority of classes will be held indoors with 4 climate controlled arena. Youth classes have been split into 4 divisions, offering more opportunities for youth of all ages and levels. A Small Fry 9 & Under (walk/trot) division has been added for the first time and the kids will show once. Youth 11 & Under will show 2 times during the Fall Championship and 1 time during the Pinnacle Circuit. The 11 & Under classes are AQHA approved. Buckles will be awarded to Champions in both Small Fry and 11 & Under classes, along with ribbons for 1st through 9th. These youngsters will be even more stoked about showing as the High Point Small Fry and the High Point 11 & Under Champions will each receive a Az. Fall Championship Trophy. Moving on to the older kids, Youth 12-14 and 15-18 divisions will offer leveled classes. The youth classes will be held on the same days as the amateur and select divisions for those classes rather than in a separate youth pen. The expansive array of Futurities will certainly be a highlight of this year’s show. To date, over $73,000 in added money has been pledged by generous sponsors. A full slate of 102
NSBA Western Pleasure and Hunter Under Saddle Futurities and Maturities are on the schedule. Three Trail futurities and a Western Riding futurity round out the mix. Ranch Riding and Ranch Horse classes have become some of the most popular offerings at the Fall Championship. This year, new and returning awards await exhibitors. The Ranch Horse Challenge Awards are back with High Point Champions in L1 Open Ranch, Open Ranch, Amateur and Select Amateur Ranch all receiving $500 and a buckle. Points will be calculated over all 10 judges over both circuits. Farnam is the sponsor of the $5,000 added 3 & 4 Year Old Ranch Horse Futurity. It will be a simple lead change class. In addition to Futurity Champion awards, the top three 3 Year Olds will receive separate awards. SEPTEMBER 2020
Cow horse exhibitors have a lot to be enthusiastic about with 2 full slates of NRCHA classes and a total of $3,800 in added money during the Pinnacle Circuit. Additionally, many of the best cow horses in the country will be competing in the $10,000 Added Rogers Heaven Sent Ranch NRCHA Futurity. Amateur cow horse exhibitors have a shot of big money too in the $5,000 Added Non Pro Derby. Even more exceptional awards and prizes are on the line. Superior Saddlery saddles will be awarded to the High Point Non Pro champions in L1, L2 and L3. High point champs in Youth Horsemanship 15-18, L3 Amateur and L3 Select Amateur Horsemanship will be carrying home a new Bob’s Custom saddle award. Best of Show awards for All around and Ranch and Cattle divisions in Open, Amateur and Youth. Buckles, Rod Patrick Ostrich Boots, Cinch Jean and Shirt Certificates and Professional’s Choice Bob Avila Collection gift certificates will be awarded. Keeping the show lively, the Prize Patrol will be roaming the grounds with a dizzying array of give aways. Gift certificates, electronics, hats, boots, supplements and more will be handed out to winners of fun games and challenges. Arizona Quarter Horse Association will be hosting its 4th annual scholarship show and IEA competition on Sunday the 4th. Youth members can compete for scholarship funds in Horsemanship and Reining classes. The unique format has riders paired with horses they have never ridden to show the extent of their skill and horse knowledge. There will also be a scholarship interview process with $1,000 awards for several exceptional youth. Funds are held by AzQHA until the youth goes to college or other higher education. This allows them to accumulate winnings year after year. Horse shows have had to adapt to new realities like every industry. Show management is working closely with the City of Scottsdale and WestWorld to ensure all COVID-19 safety protocols are maintained. It is fortunate that outdoor facilities and stall areas at WestWorld are well spaced to naturally promote social distancing. Additionally, the four voluminous, climate control arenas are ideal for minimizing risk. Exhibitors will use the HorseShow Tracker for entries and result, eliminating almost all need to spend time in the show office. Show Management will also be upholding all local mask ordinances that are in effect at the time of the show. It is important to note that due to public gathering restrictions, spectators will not be allowed at this year’s show. Only exhibitors, trainers and family will be on site.
