The 2021 American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame Induction and Reunion Celebration is coming home to the American Quarter Horse Association and the American Quarter Horse Foundation’s headquarters in Amarillo, Texas. The celebration is slated for Friday and Saturday, August 13-14. Through a multi-day celebration, rich with events honoring previous and current inductees, the occasion will center on the memories of the people and horses who blazed the trail in our industry and the long-steeped history of the American Quarter Horse.

During this memorable celebration, the American Quarter Horse family will honor inductees through moving video tributes and acceptance speeches and dedication of inductee exhibits, giving everyone the chance to reflect on the impact the inductees have had on the American Quarter Horse industry. Induction into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame is the highest industry honor that can be bestowed upon a human or equine. Those chosen for induction are recognized for their lifetime of accomplishments and service. Ticket information and a full schedule of events will be released at a later date. For more information, visit www.aqha.com/museum. Hall of Fame Classes of 2020 and 2021 - Six horses and five AQHA members were selected for induction into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame as part of the Classes of 2020 and 2021. Due to the pandemic, the 2020 Hall of Fame Induction was postponed to protect the health and safety of the inductees, their friends and family, and event staff. The horses are A Good Machine, a 1993 bay stallion; Dual Rey, a 1994 sorrel stallion; Esters Little Klu, a 1968 gray Thoroughbred mare; Mr Eye Opener, a 1990 gray stallion; Triple’s Image, a 1969 sorrel stallion; and Zan Parr Jack, a 1979 sorrel stallion. The individuals are AQHA Professional Horseman Bob Avila of Scottsdale, Arizona; racehorse trainer C. Dwayne “Sleepy” Gilbreath of Dennis, Texas; the late Past Executive Committee Member George Phillips of Jackson, Mississippi; AQHA Past President Johnny Trotter of Hereford, Texas; and AQHA Past President Dr. Glenn Blodgett of Guthrie, Texas. The American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum fulfills the Foundation’s mission by beautifully showcasing the hundreds of horses and people who have earned the distinction of becoming part of the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame. These inductees are chosen each year by a selection committee and inducted into the Hall of Fame during the annual Hall of Fame Induction.

Q - After a test-run last
COREY CUSHING INTERVIEW
June, the NRCHA has returned with a 3-year contract to hold the DT Horses Western Derby at WestWorld of Scottsdale. Why?
A - Let’s get started by saying that last year as tough as this was
with the pandemic and us being the first major show going into the 2020 season. We had heard rumors about small shows here and there. This was not only our first, but all of the equine industries, first premier event to finally let go and be out into the public since we had all been in lockdown. It was a last-minute decision and as much as we loved Paso Robles, California, they were not going to let us have a horse show. When I spoke to Brian Dygert, he had the dates available. The biggest concern was the heat, but the best thing about Westworld was that if you did get hot you could go ride in the air-conditioned areas that they offer. We were super excited to go there, me especially, but after more people got there and as the week went on, it was nothing but compliments and people saying, this is where the Derby needs to be.
Q - What can spectators expect to see at the event? A - I tell you what, there are so many great horses and so many
great riders out there. Whether it be in the Non-Pro, the Limited, the Intermediate and especially in the Open. These guys are going to come in Full Send mode. This is not just a friendly get together anymore. You are going to see the best Cowboys & Cowgirls compete not only for money, but for prizes. You know, this event is such, that it takes a lot of practice. It takes a lot of training and there is nothing more rewarding in my opinion. When it all comes together and you can put those perfect three runs together at the same time and walk away from it as a Champion, it is so rewarding and so humbling. There are so many ups and downs. What you can expect to see are the greatest horses competing at the highest level and the athletes showing great things as far as what they have to offer. Not only for the horse, but what these riders can do who are on them, and them both working together as a team.
Q - There is interest, in the future, to make the Saturday Night
Finals into a “Showcase Event” in Scottsdale suitable for broadcast and paid admission. What do you think about that concept?
A - It is something that definitely excites me. If we ever get a
point that we need to start charging because there are not enough seats available, I will not only give myself, but the whole board and Association a round of applause. It’s what we want this to be. We want this to be a spectator fun event where not only seeing the great horses, the cowboys & cowgirls, but also the great camaraderie, the people involved, how the Association is run and the pure excitement and enjoyment of being there. It’s a hot ticket!
Q - You are very active with NRCHA politically and were
unanimously re-elected as President of the organization. Why do it?
A - Because this is my life, this is something that I want to do.
Even though I grew up in the Reining, as the years went along and turning more into the Reined Cow Horse events this is truly my passion. I eat, live, sleep and drink COW HORSE, every single day! The ups and downs, good times, bad times, this is what I want 16
to do. For whatever reason the Board felt I was the best to be there in the Presidential spot. I feel like I am doing a good job. The best I possibly can. I have been credited and patted on the back for doing such a great job, but it can only be done when you are surrounded with great people. The committees, the boards, the office staff. So many more than can be mentioned here.
Q -– Winning the World’s Greatest Horseman Title twice is an
incredible accomplishment. How did you handle the pressure?
A - One event at a time. Honestly…..I mean that. It is so important
to get shown so true and good in all four events. But a person has got to remember in going there, that there might be time for touch ups here and there, or to say, let your horse know what is coming next. When the horses get to that point, they usually have a good idea, but maybe a small reminder, maybe warming him up different, maybe just the prep of - hey I have to saddle you and warm you up and we rope a steer, or we are just going down the fence. I might just trot you around? A horse has got to be mentally stable and mentally ready to handle that. Because, with so much time between each event, you won’t have a horse in the end. And we all know the old saying, it all comes down to the fence work……
Q - The World’s Greatest Horseman competition involves four events: herd work, reined work, steer stopping and cow work. What do you look for in a horse able to compete in all of the disciplines?
A - As far as competing in all four events, you look for a horse that is mentally comfortable with doing all four. The runs may not be 100% perfect, but if it’s not far from a couple of little adjustments to make them look really good. You must remember too, that going into that, if you don’t get shown as well as you would have liked to, there is still a couple more events to possibly still make a comeback, but it’s gotta work out right. Just having the complete confidence in your horse and the horses that I look for as it comes time to enter. Something that I expressed earlier, something I can get on and it’s, hey we are going to cut, or we are going down the fence, or we are going to rein, or rope. Whatever the case may be, they just understand it and they are confident in it, and even if they are not 100% perfect, that confidence is going to sell that more than what the freak movement would be.
Q -Who were some of the early influencers in your career? A - Definitely Benny Guitron. Noel Skinner, that’s who I grew up
riding with. He did not do a lot of cow horse back when I lived in Utah. As the years have gone on Don Murphy, Bob Avila and honestly bits and pieces from everyone. There is an endless list of people that I have gotten help from in one discipline to the next. Just good quality camaraderie, good quality people. It may work good on this horse, or this is something you can use later on. The influence in my life are who I listed, plus anyone I have asked advice from. Many of them still help me break it down and continue to help me to this day!
MAY 2021
Q -Many people can train horses, but only a few can really show them. You excel at both. What tips can you share on showing horses?
A - The bottom line, and I have expressed this to all of my Non-
games. You have to remember that these horses can come out and act fresh. But is it a fresh because they just want something to do because they are created to be such a working horse? Or is it because they are feeling good in the middle of a hot day? I don’t think so.
Pros, my assistants and I even tell myself this is, when it comes Q - Do you have a routine? time to show, when we are getting ready to show is, “Just make it a good picture.” Make sure that you can go from loping off at A - Honestly, it just depends on the day. What I need to work on the gate to start your Reining pattern, to when it’s time to do your first, what is the priority. We think it through day to day. My team, back up at the end, even if it’s may not be perfect, make it sellable they give me all the freedom in the world to get done what I need as a picture. Knowing what your horse has available to offer you, to get done. I also feel it is very it’s your job on how to bring it important to have family time. out. When there are numerous Whether it be the weekend, or horses involved, I think you have if something is going on and I to break it down with that same need to leave early and go and thing in mind. But you must keep get the kids from school, or if we in mind, that it’s one horse at a have football practice, hockey time. Think about just that horse, practice or just having a play how am I going to show him, how date with the kids. It’s important I am going to sell the picture, as to spend time with them on that. Does this horse Something as little as, we get to need just a good 20 minutes of a show and I say, “hey guys, I am just walking around? Sometimes going to stay at a friend’s place that can do more than 3 hours and I am going to work a couple of long trotting just to get him of horse, so you guys go in and tired. Because I think on some set up the stalls.” It’s just not horses, I think it only makes them going and throwing down a few more amped up. So, everyone is aware, that way no one is we do, there are so many quiet moments and some very explosive. caught off guard or caught by surprise and we are 100% ready for That is not unlike other disciplines in separate categories. Just like what that next day brings. Even if it is a couple days ahead of the in Cutting and Reining. It needs to look so on fire and then so calm horse showing, or if it is the day that horse is showing we are ready and cool. As long as you can sell that and your horse can sell that, for whatever is thrown out at us. When I go to leave, I usually take it’s only going to help you on your goal. two to three guys. I always have someone at the ranch to take care of all the horses that we leave back at home. When I am gone, if Q -What time do you get started in the morning? there isn’t a rider here, we get them out to walk or get turned out every day. It’s a good way for the horses to get some down time. A - Ha, ha. Well, this past week we started at 5am every single It gives some time to focus on the ones at the show, we know it’s morning. Because I love first thing in the morning when the sun is handled at home. And they have to understand too, how I want coming up. It’s when I have my best work. Normal operating hours things done, how I want it to be, what I expect when I get home. are about half days, just 12 hours. Ha ha. But usually it’s 6:30 in It’s a lot. The team, I would have to say, is just as important as me the morning, and to 3 to 4:30 in the afternoons. In the afternoons, being here and riding every single day. Without them, and as busy it may be riding a couple that just need some extra attention, In the as I am, you need to know that everything is handled if I am home morning it’s a focus on the Futurity horses, Derby horse, whatever or not. is coming up. It is what’s the priority. What is happening, what’s building, what we need to get ready for. Closer to Summer, the Q -- To perform and win at your level, one must have a team. Your mornings will be as early as 3 or 4am till 10 or 11am because it will wife Kristen and family take this very seriously. How large is your get so hot. Of course, the covered arena and fans definitely helps team? a lot. It all just depends on the day that time of the year and what the horse can handle. If I am tired, I not only have to watch out for A - She is a huge part! I could not agree with you more! 110% I my horses, but I also must watch out for myself too. I have to make totally agree with you. OK let’s get this straight, Kristen is more of a sure I can last all through the Summer. day when I eat dinner, I am ready to go to bed. There are countless hours where Kristen stays up late at night on the computer. I have woken up in the middle of the night and see the light on in the office and she’s in there doing entries or getting this ready, or that ready or getting things ready for the kids and it may be for school, or an after-school project. There is a lot more to it than say being the trainer’s wife so to speak. Just taking care of entries, knowing the horses that is a lot. She is an outstanding mother. She is constantly making sure that the kids are taken care of in their best interest, as well as making sure that I am ready for the show, especially on the paperwork side. I have a pretty good idea, but it’s pretty funny when I walk into the office, whomever it is will say “Kristen filled out your entries this time didn’t she.” It’s pretty neat that my wife is the best. Maybe it’s after dinner or watching tv and something is bothering you, it’s so nice to have someone that understands what we do and just being able to go over the work, if something is bothering me from that day or whatever. She points out the obvious, even if I don’t want to hear it at the time, I make her tell me and it’s tough for her to tell me because it may make me upset but it’s only in a way that she wants to help me. To feel more achievement, get better results and it always comes from a great place in her heart. It’s tough to take and I can always tell if something is on her mind and I make her tell me because she is right even if I don’t want to hear it. Not only is Kristen an owner of this business, she sees it every day. She sits up there and watches, not just me, she watches a lot of people. Good runs, bad runs, whatever. She can sit there and say, “Hey this or that, what you are doing with your hands, or your approach here, or this is the picture you are presenting, and this is the way it looks.” Whatever the case may be, she gets it 110%!
Q - How do you keep your horses shod and sound? A - Great farriers and great vets! On the veterinarian side Dr.
would not be sponsors if I did not fully believe that they are the best, and I used these products before they were my sponsors. I take this very seriously. My sponsors are: Nutrena Feed, Cinch Jeans, Santa Cruz Animal Health Supplements and Horse Care Products, Bex Sunglasses, Classic Equine Boots and Equipment, Handmade Exotics Belts, Jeff Smith Custom Saddles, Traditional Rawhide Braiders, Bloomer Trailers, Rios of Mercedes Boots, Western Legacy Custom Hats, EZ All Grooming Products, & South Point Casino and Hotel. I am very proud and honored that they are part of my program. They all play and big part and it’s really something special. It only helps me in what I do, and I try and help them succeed and I work hard to best represent them, and I cannot Thank them enough.
Q - Family is a large part of your life. How do you balance being in the horse business with family life?
A - Honestly, if Kristen called me and said, “I need the boys picked up
Bryan Buchanan and Dr. Joe Carter. On the farrier side Jason Johnson and Eric Boulding. Just the overall look, the overall health, the feeding program I have got. We all have soundness issues. It seems like the better places you keep horses are safer, but they can hurt themselves anywhere. Whether they get hurt or not I always want my horses to look and feel great! It is a constant mindset as far as how is that horse working, what’s he going to do that day, how is his overall condition? And older bridle horse, or a futurity horse, if I have been gone a couple of weeks I am not going to jump on and jump right back into it like I have been here every day. For one, I feel like it causes stress. This horse has been on a break and now all of a sudden, it’s 100% full blown. They may not be in the best shape mentally or physically. You can almost create more damage than good when you get into something like that. Honestly, it’s just common sense. Say I am gone a few weeks to the Snaffle Bit Futurity, it’s basically 3 weeks from start to finish. When I get back home it’s 3 or 4 days of just legging the horses back up. Knock the fresh off of them, piddle around with some stuff to get them mentally thinking about what’s to come. Other horses, depending on how long I have been gone, if the shoer has missed them or whatever, that can cause them a lot of stress. Suspensories, tendons, ligaments, etc. Making sure they stay on a routine and a solid 6-week program to get ready for a show. I prefer to have the horses shod about a week before or more. That 20
way they all can be adjusted to the new shoes, that they have good form and are able to last the entire show for the optimal time. They have these new shoes and are they ready? They are going into the most important time of their career. The key is to have them peak at the right time. My sponsors are part of my program because I believe in them. It is 100% that they have the best products, or they would not be on my team! Everything from Nutrena, the feed balances my horses. Some get fed more than others, and the supplements. For instance, protection of the horse. Polo wraps, splint boots, they all help especially with what we ask these horses to do. Whether it is a light day or full-on intense days. In the show pen or training at home these horses are athletes, and overall protection is very important. It would be like asking a football player to go play his best game with no shoulder pads on. It’s going to be a wreck. These horses not only need to be physically fit, but they need to be dressed appropriately for what they are going to do. They need to be taken care of, with us making sure they are 100% sound. If it’s in the practice pen or at the show. They need to feel their best so that they can perform their best! My sponsors products are a key part of my program, I can’t say it enough. They
today” or they want to come and ride. I do it. Family is so important. My family understand that even though I love this I can stop and help my wife, spend time with my kids. I honestly do not call this a job, but they understand it’s me going to work and riding horses because I truly love it. They know how important it is from the day they were born, and it has been a huge part of their life. It’s easier for them to understand opposed to some people that look at us like we are crazy. We try and take one or two family trips a year. Something as simple as going to the movies. Over the last weekend Kristen and Capri went and saw the new baby Monroe that Kristen’s sister just had. I got to spend the weekend with the boys. They came over with me on Saturday and they got to hang out at the ranch. It was just good quality time. Caleb wants to be a big part of it and wants to be out here all of the time. Lincoln, he’s into it if it’s the thing to do. While they are here, they are good friends with all of the guys. They help everyone out doing random things with all the guys. Now Capri, she has me wrapped around her little finger! It’s something I would never trade, I just try and manage it the best I can. Try and get done what is the most important thing that day and have the time for them. I am in a little bit better position than some folks in that I can just take off and leave whenever I need to or feel the need to. But also knowing, and Kristen knows this too, this is our livelihood. These horses do not get better unless I am here. Yes, I do have a great team that can fill in, but it’s just quality time spent on their back. There is not a “every three days I am going to leave an extra hour early to go home and spend time with my family”. It’s simple, when I can, when I get tired or when I feel that it is important. Like if something is bothering them, or they need some good family time with dad, we try and separate that stuff. The kids all look forward to that.

Non Pro Limited class at the DT Horses Western Derby in Scottsdale Non Pro Limited competitors at the DT Horses Western Derby in Scottsdale, Arizona, will ride for more money than ever at the June 2 through 12, 2021, event. The National Reined Cow Horse Association Board of Directors voted to add money to the Non Pro Limited Derby and the Non Pro Limited horse show class at the premier event.
This year, $10,000 is added to the ever-growing and popular Non Pro Limited class. Riders compete in rein work and box a cow in this introductory class to the reined cow horse. “The Non Pro Limited class offers riders of all experience and comfort levels the opportunity to find a home in reined cow horse sport,” said NRCHA Executive Director Anna Morrison. “It is often the first stop for riders new to NRCHA competition, as it allows a rider and their horse the chance to work a cow but not go down the fence. This class has proven to be a major area of growth for NRCHA and has become very competitive. earnings for the boxing, they cannot have earned more than $750 in a down the fence class. In the Derby, the Non Pro Limited will see an increase of $1,000 more than last year’s purse to a total of $3,000-added. In the Non Pro Limited Derby, riders can show 4-, 5- or 6-year-old horses in the snaffle bit. The Derby includes a herd work, rein work and cow work portion to award a composite score winner in the Non Pro Limited division. The newly-named DT Horses Western Derby will be held at WestWorld of Scottsdale for the second year, with DT Horses, Inc, supporting the event as the title sponsor for the first of its threeyear commitment. With a full slate of horse show classes, the DT Horses Western Derby is set to be another huge event, especially with the $100,000 added to the Open 4- and 5-year-old Derby. The CD Survivor Open Bridle Spectacular, sponsored by Holy Cow Performance Horses, includes $25,000 in added-money to the top bridle horse at the event. In addition, $25,000 is added to the Non Pro Derby, in addition to the money previously stated in the Non Pro Limited classes. The increase was voted on by the NRCHA Board of Directors last year. Q - Why did you start DT Horses and what was the plan and the goals?
A - When I rodeoed professionally,
DEAN TUFTIN INTERVIEW
I saw the need to raise the right kind of horses that were real top end Rodeo horses. That’s when I started my focus on Team Roping horses, and that is what I specialized in. As I was rodeoing, I would be in common areas of the Country and sometimes look for horses, or try horses for myself, my partner, and friends. Nine times out of ten the horses were not the quality that we were looking for. They weren’t broke good enough, sometimes they had been roped on and they were good rope horses, but they didn’t have steering or brakes. So, people would rope on them and they ended up as rope horses because they were rejects from reining, cow horse, cutters and sometimes off the ranch. More often the ones that were successful were the ones where somebody spent some time getting them really broke. You could just feel it in the horse. So, my focus was to create a program, raise my own horses that I thought were true athletes and were not rejects. We have a process where we start them and get them super broke, we took our time, and we did all the right things to give the horse the best opportunity to be successful. That is really how we started. That was back in the early 2000’s. I started the business with my Mother-in-Law. She had a barrel racing horse that went to the National Finals. So, my job right off the get-go was to try and find matching mares for that stallion. And we did, but by year two he had broken his leg. At that point we were stuck without a stallion and we had all these mares. We fast forward it a little bit and bred the mares around, then bought the first couple of stallions and within a few years we started to win some AQHA World Championships in roping. It was pretty fast! We found kind of a magic combination in what we were doing. The type of stallion I found was key. I found him through Carol Rose and my mares that I was breeding. I think we have 10 or 12 AQHA Championships now. Horses that were mostly grown & trained 100% on my ranch. We have had three PRCA/AQHA Horses of the Year, three runner-up Superhorses at the AQHA, we have had two Senior All-Around in the AQHA. The AQHA World people know who we are, but in Scottsdale Arizona they know us for roping. We expanded that with the addition of Hickory Holly Time. We started breeding him and we also started adding the cowhorse operation to the roping operation. That was around 2011, and we had our first finalist in the Snaffle Bit around 2011. So that has been going on about a decade now. We have won several runner-up’s, we won the World’s Greatest Horseman, we have been Reserve Champion at the Derby, at the Snaffle Bit. We have definitely put our stamp on the Quarter Horse industry with our horses. To make a long story short, we went 28
from a mom and pa operation where I was riding the horses and training them, into several trainers. We have upwards of about 130 horses right now. We have half of the operation, all of the horses in training, here in Scottsdale and all of the mares, babies and stallions are in Weatherford Texas. Our operation is really big right now, with everything from a twoyear-old trained, on up, right here in Scottsdale. We breed about 25 to 30 babies a year at our peak. Being a roper and trainer myself, I really did not have any deadlines on the horses. I would train them until I saw fit. The first few we shipped off were very, very successful.
Q -- Bret Paulick on Illbeyourhickleberry, out of your stallion
Hickory Holly Time won the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Non-Pro in 2020. How did that make you feel?
A - Last year was very exciting for us at the
NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity. Not only was Bret’s success huge for us, but we had five Hickory Holly Time’s in the Top 25 in the Open Finals. So out of 300 horse, five of the Top 25 were from our stallion. In the year previous it was his first group of colts. The first year we won it but lost in a tie breaker on the fence. We had a six-point lead going into the fence work. It has been a couple of really exciting years with his babies, and we are looking forward to more of that success going forward.
Q - Hickory Holly Time won the World’s
Greatest Horseman in 2018, after a Championship show career and now is standing for you at Oswood Stallion Station. How is that working out?
A - We are really happy to be partners with
Oswood’s, they have done a tremendous job breeding and shipping semen for us all throughout the World. We have bred horses from Australia to Italy, to Brazil, to Canada and here in the United States. We have bred a lot of mares over the last five years. It has been very successful, and now we have launched his baby 1910 who is his most successful baby until this point, out of the great Lil Miss Shiney Chex. She is the top cow horse producing mare of all time now. We own her as well. We are breeding 1910 this year (his first year), so we have a junior stallion under Hickory Holly Time as well.
Q - You have three beautiful stallions: Hickory Holly Time,
Nineteen Ten, and Metallic CD, and a broodmare band of 18 fancy horses. What do you look for when matching horses for your breeding program?
A - I was always a big stickler with my mares. Every mare that we
bred when we started out, I rode. I knew how they moved, how they thought, how they performed. It felt like that gave me a real insight
MAY 2021
into how to breed them, not just how they were on paper but how they really were. I rode everything on my ranch, so I tried to expand it as much as I could by bringing in mares that were performed on. Maybe I saw them at a show, or had the opportunity to buy them, or maybe leased an embryo or something like that. Generally, it was always to breed to the very best mares that we could. We have
“Three years? I’ll step up if you move to Scottsdale. They needed my sponsorship to do it and they needed it overnight.” worked hard to hold that true as much as we can. I really look for how a mare moves, how a mare thinks, the type of performer they are as an individual. Because I feel that 75% of that baby is the mare. We start with trying to find those matches - sometimes you hit, sometimes you miss, but sometimes you really hit! With Lil Miss Shiney Chex we have been super successful with Hickory Holly Time crossing on her, but she has proven she can cross on other studs and the foals proved to be successful as well. We had the high seller two years ago at the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Sale with a foal by Hickory Holly Time out of a mare name Cat Mist. Cat Mist also was a producer of SJR Diamond Mist which Corey rode and won the World’s Greatest Horseman on in 2018. Those type of crosses are quite easy. Your hope is that you cross a World Champion mare on a World Champion stallion and you hope for the best, but sometimes you do not get the performer you are looking for, but it sure ups the odds.
Q - You stepped up as the major sponsor with naming rights
to the upcoming DT Horses Western Derby at WestWorld and that support was critical to securing a three-year contract with Scottsdale and attracted other sponsors and stakeholders to contribute. Why contribute as the major sponsor at this time?
A - I felt like Westworld was the perfect facility for a major
guys can bring some of their other horses, maybe their three-yearolds and they can ride them in all the other arenas. That’s going to bode well for people bringing more horses to this show. It’s going to be big this year! It’s going to really expand. Paso Robles was too far for the eastern people to travel to, and it was truly not the facility that Westworld is. Scottsdale is the best, that is one of the main reasons we moved our operation here. We actually moved down here in 2017 full time. Years ago we had a house here. So, we would come down here periodically. I had young kids in elementary school, so we would come at Christmas, or Spring Break. And over time when we came, we did not want to leave. We loved it here! I have a lot of friends in the roping industry here and when I roped professionally, we actually lived here one-year full time. We loved it! But when our kids got into school and for business reasons, we ended up moving back to Oregon. But, the whole time I missed it and my family missed it. We ended up moving full time and it has been a wonderful, wonderful move for us because we love it here.
Q - With the resources invested here one could have a ranch anyplace in the world. Why did you choose Rio Verde?
A - The weather for me is a big thing, and I am a big team roper.
I competed at the Wrangler Jeans Showdown in 1992 for Canada in the Team Roping. That was one of the first times I had been here, and I didn’t want to leave. It was like, this is amazing. All of the people were horse people and it just felt like a community here that I wanted to be part of. It took years to get back here, but we love the move. We love the weather! This is a great place to train horses. People always worry about the heat, but we do not have the humidity. We have nine of the best months you can have of anywhere to train horses. It’s very predictable, so you can plan your day. I was in Texas yesterday, it can be beautiful, then a nice storm the next day, then a humid hot mess and not a bunch of fun. I love Arizona, and I like to play golf too. For me, where can you find a place that is great to live in, low humidity, no bugs! The winters are just tremendous here. It’s the best! That’s why everyone from the North West, everyone from Canada, that’s why they come here. For this great weather. That’s why I am here. We are in a little bubble; my wife and I talk about the North Scottsdale bubble and that is where we live and where we are raising our kids. I have two teenage daughters; one is about to go to Texas for college this Fall. I have to tell them, it’s not all this nice, like it is here. You are going to have weather, you are going to have crazy people, crazy freeways, all this other stuff. We are in a very fortunate spot being where we are here. We love it!
Q - What is the best way for someone looking to compete in NRCHA events to get started?
A - The very best thing is that there is so much information now
cowhorse show. Unfortunately, those spots had been taken for years because there were only four majors that they had. The opportunity with the Derby coming up, we had some options. Other places had their hat in the ring, but really what happened was that it was almost the luck of COVID last year, where it ended up Arizona was the only place that we could have it. So, they ended up moving it here and everyone ended up here and overwhelmingly understood how great it was here in Scottsdale. It ended up not being so much of what I did as much as they just discovered the great place that we have right here at Westworld with the City of Scottsdale. It is a perfect place for this, it is the perfect match. It is a nice geographical spot right in between the West Coast and Texas, so I feel like it’s just going to grow like gangbusters these next few years. Westworld is also a wonderful place because you have all these different buildings under air conditioning, so these
that you can get off of the internet or YouTube and social media. But it’s really to find that person that you can trust, whether it’s a professional trainer, or it does not have to be a professional trainer, it just has to be a horse person. A horseman. Really get involved that way. People really lack general horsemanship. The best thing anyone can do first is to learn general horsemanship. It does not matter what it is that you are doing - roping, cow horse. The best people to learn from are great horsemen. Surround yourself with great people, fun people, and great horsemen, and that is the quickest way get involved. All of our horses, all our colts, we start working them on the ground. Clinton Anderson is right down at my other arena here. He stays with me periodically. Most of my guys here do “The Method” on the young colts and we feel that sets those colts apart because they are using the thinking side of their brain. They are soft on the ground. If they are soft on the ground, that usually transfers to their back. They are not scared of you, they are working with you from day one.

ANNA MORRISON INTERVIEW
Q - Congratulations on becoming the new NRCHA Executive Director. What are the challenges for the organization going forward?
A - NRCHA is very lucky in that we are experiencing a tremendous amount of growth.
Because of this, we are faced with the best kind of challenge to have: how to fit more entries into our show schedules. Much of our growth is due to NRCHA’s reputation as a fun, family-friendly event, and we want to make sure that we are preserving the great atmosphere our events are known for as we accommodate our growth.
Q - What did you learn working for AQHA Internationally? A - Serving AQHA’s international membership taught me a number of valuable lessons,
including how to balance the needs of a very diverse membership. This is important whether you are serving members from multiple international regions or multiple domestic regions – or both, as we are lucky to do at NRCHA! Being able to listen and respond to needs that are often drastically different is part of what makes us successful as an NRCHA team, and I’m grateful for the ways in which my work at AQHA prepared me for the work we do here.
Q -NRCHA is seeking to expand their reach offering a free membership. How do you feel about that?
A - The NRCHA Free Ride program is among the most forward-thinking membership
programs in our industry, and I only wish I could take credit for initiating it! This program has been a major contributing factor in the growth NRCHA has experienced over the past several years, and we are excited about continuing to demonstrate our value to our newest members as they enjoy their Free Ride year with us.
Q - Taylor Sheridan, thru Yellowstone, introduced Cow Horse to an audience of millions in last years episodes. What impact has that exposure had on the sport?
A - We could not be more grateful to Taylor for highlighting our sport through
Yellowstone, which has become a true cultural phenomenon. His passion for our cattle and equine industries, including competitive horse sport, has shone through in his work, and his willingness to highlight NRCHA has exposed our sport to exponentially more people than we could have reached on our own. We can’t wait to see what Season 4 of Yellowstone has in store for fans of the show and fans of NRCHA!
Q - What is exciting about the DT Western Derby moving venues and being held at Westworld for 2021 to 2023?
A - Last year brought about an immense amount of change for our world, and one
change that hit very close to home was the move of the Western Derby from Paso Robles, California, to Scottsdale, Arizona. The feedback we received from our exhibitors about the quality of the venue made it clear that we would be coming back to WestWorld of Scottsdale for 2021. Our move to Scottsdale wouldn’t be possible without the incredible support we received from our sponsors, and most notably from Dean Tuftin’s, DT Horses LLC, our new title sponsor for the DT Horses Western Derby.
Q - Scottsdale is encouraging stakeholders to turn future (2022 & beyond) Saturday night
performances into a big event. One worthy of a paid-gate, and broadcast that showcases the NRCHA disciplines as real salute to the West’s Most Western Town, Arizona, and America. What do you think of the idea?
A - We’re incredibly supportive of showcasing our sport through special performances and
events that are open to the public. We look forward to looking at creative ways to do this next year, and even though 2021 is still presenting some challenges, we do invite spectators to join us in a responsible and socially distanced way to enjoy our DT Horses Western Derby Open Finals at noon on Sunday, June 13. Cave Creek Equine adds Hallmarq Standing
Equine sMRI to Help Improve Lameness Diagnosis We are pleased to tell you that together with our highquality products and equipment, we now will be offering Hallmarq’s Standing Equine MRI system (sMRI) which will bring the same diagnostic capability that human medicine offers to equine clinical practice, with the equine patient at the forefront of every design decision.
For more information contact Cave Creek Equine Surgical & Imaging Center at (623) 581-5508, or visit cavecreekequine.com
Cave Creek Equine’s newest Hallmarq sMRI provides a definitive diagnosis, better treatment, and ultimate support. By visualizing slices through tissue, sMRI can quickly and precisely localize damage to both bone and soft tissues without the need for anesthesia!! Diagnostic in over 90% of cases, Standing Equine MRI (sMRI) identifies the specific cause of lameness! SMRI provides clinicians better guidance for treatment: More Accurate Diagnosis, Quick & Affordable Answers, A Clear Picture of Chronic Lameness, Scan Multiple Regions, Visualize Tissues & Densities, Effectively Guide Treatment To help vets quickly and safely diagnose the cause of equine lameness, Hallmarq Veterinary Imaging addition of Standing Equine Leg CT (slCT) to its product range, increasing access to advanced imaging for all equine vet practices. Hallmarq is introducing the new slCT after achieving success imaging standing sedated horses in collaboration with their UK-based clinical trial sites. Hallmarq Veterinary Imaging pioneered the development of standing MRI for horses and the new standing CT scanner uses a simple and safe design, with a unique low, flat platform for quick and easy entry and exit of the standing sedated horse. The system uses a novel dual-concentric ring design which enables the detector plate to remain very close to the region of interest, thereby improving image quality. Using slCT ensures equine practices have access to 3D imaging in the evaluation of their lameness cases. Hallmarq is one of the few companies to incorporate motion correction technology to better ensure high quality, clear images in the standing patient. This technology is often considered out of reach for many clinics and horse owners. However, Hallmarq considers the total cost of ownership in its design decisions, providing an affordable solution 42
to most clinics. Their unique financial models and low start-up costs negate the need for up front capital expenditure and their flexible monthly payment options take seasonality into account. For any horse owner, the treat, rest, repeat loop of lameness diagnosis is both costly and time consuming. Early use of advanced imaging to pinpoint the exact cause of the problem minimises the overall cost associated with getting horses back on track. Hallmarq has capitalized on over 20 years of experience with their unique Standing Equine MRI (sMRI) to create this additional tool for equine vets to fully evaluate and diagnose bony disease in the equine lower limb, including 3D visualization of fractures. CT combines hundreds of x-rays to create a 3D digital image, which can then be viewed as thin slices from any direction, eliminating overlapping structures and revealing minute detail in bone and cartilage. slCT complements their sMRI which highlights soft tissue and metabolic changes and together they provide an even more powerful diagnostic aid.

By Leslie Potter Lexington, Ky. – Oliver Townend completed a hat trick this year at the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event presented by MARS Equestrian™, adding a third consecutive win at a venue that the British eventer describes as “the most special in the world.” In 2018 and 2019, Townend took the top spot in the CCI5*-L with Cooley Master Class, but this year it was Ballaghmor
Oliver Townend and Boyd Martin Take the Wins at the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event and USEF CCI5*-L National Championship Class, the 14-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding owned by Karyn Shuter, Angela Hislop, and Val Ryan, taking the win. “All I had to do was do my job on my horse,” said Townend. “Today he felt in incredible shape. $1,000 Medina Spirit Gives Baffert A Record Seventh Set Of Roses
The roar of even the smaller crowd of 51,838 beneath the Twin Spires at Churchill Downs sounded louder than ever, after the global pandemic forced the delayed 2020 edition to be held without spectators on Sept. 5. Returning to it’s rightful place on the first Saturday in May, the end result was the same: Hall of Famers Bob Baffert and
John Velazquez teamed up to win the Run for the Roses. In this 147th edition, the horse was the bargain buy Medina Spirit ($26.20), owned by Derby first-timer Amr bin Fareer bin Mohammed bin Zedan. The son of Protonico cost just $1,000 as a yearling, and Zedan purchased him for $35,000 as a 2-year-old.

Gail Rice, breeder of Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit
Medina Spirit grabbed the lead at the start from post position eight, set all the fractions, and fended off challenges from Mandaloun, Hot Rod Charlie, and the favored, previously undefeated champion Essential Quality through the length of the stretch to win by about a halflength. He ran 1 1/4 miles over Churchill Downs’ fast main track in 2:01.02. “That little horse has got a heart,” Baffert said. “(Velazquez) told me last night, ‘Don’t underestimate this horse, he’s better than you think, Bob. Don’t worry, we’ll get the job done.’” The victory was worth $1,860,000 and increased Medina Spirit’s earnings to $2,175,200 with a record of 6-3-3-0. Medina Spirit was bred in Florida by Gail Rice, mother of Eclipse Award finalist Taylor Rice (apprentice jockey) and mother-in-law to top jockey Jose Ortiz, out of the Brilliant Speed mare Mongolian Changa. The mare failed to produce milk when Medina Spirit was first born, and Rice had to turn to her only other broodmare, Scribbling Sarah, for assistance. The young Medina Spirit thrived, and his own mom started producing milk several hours later. Unfortunately, Rice’s divorce forced the sale of Medina Spirit as a yearling. He brought the bottomdollar bid of $1,000 at the OBS Winter Mixed sale in early 2019, and she had no choice but to let him go. “I kept telling people, ‘This horse can run!’” Rice said. “Just his body and his leg, and the intelligent attitude he had; I always thought he was special.”
What benefits do you see from holding the NRCHA DT Horses Western Derby Event at WestWorld of Scottsdale? Al Dunning
“The NRCHA Derby is a major event that is exciting for contestants and spectators alike! Scottsdale is a town everyone loves to visit because of the great WestWorld Facility, wonderful places to stay, and a variety of excellent evening dining choices. This is a showcase for Arizona horses and trainers, as this area continues to grow as an equine training and showing destination. Having the NRCHA DT Horses Derby is a feather in Scottsdale’s hat at a time of the year when few facilities in the country could comfortably handle a large event in a temperature controlled, high quality environment.”

Expensive Hobby Inducted into the
American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 2007 Inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 2007. “Other horses have been just as talented – maybe even better – but you’ve never seen one with so much strength. He would just pile-drive his back end into the dirt,” said Al Dunning, who trained and showed Expensive Hobby for most of the gelding’s life.
Expensive Hobby was born in 1971 and was sired by Hobby Horse and out of Jan’s Helen, by AQHA Champion Stormy’s Sugar. Mehl Lawson, the sculptor who created the Dogwood bronze and the National Reining Horse Association’s bronze trophy, started the buckskin gelding. Lawson was showing “Hobby” in hackamore classes when Al Dunning, and Arizona trainer, bought the horse for his “youth kid,” Georganna Stewart of California. Stewart qualified Hobby for the 1976 AJQHA World Championship Show, but otherwise left the showing to Dunning. According to a book on reining, co-written by Dunning and Pat Close, Hobby won 29 of 32 hackamore classes, including Del Mar and the Phoenix A to Z show. In the bridle classes, the gelding won the stock horse championships at the Santa Barbara National, at the Phoenix A to Z three times and at Del Mar five times. The secret recipe for all this success was keeping Expensive Hobby mentally fresh and physically fit. Dunning trotted the gelding innumerable miles across the desert landscape. The trainer started cutting on Expensive Hobby, a real test of patience for a horse used to chasing cows down the fence. After a nine-year reining career, Expensive Hobby helped teach Dunning’s daughter to cut. The buckskin appeared on Dunning’s tack catalog and was on the cover of Dunning’s reining book, the second edition, published by Western Horseman publishing. Expensive Hobby was finally retired from his show career and spent his days on Dunning’s Almosta Ranch in Scottsdale, Arizona. He died in 1996, and was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 2007. 54

DT HORSES Western Derby Rolls into WestWorld
The National Reined Cow Horse Association returns to WestWorld of Scottsdale for the second year for the June 2-13, 2021, DT Horses Western Derby. With a full slate of horse show classes, the DT Horses Western Derby is set to be another huge event for the NRCHA, especially with the $80,000 added to the Open 4- and 5-year-old Derby. It is already a banner year for the reined cow horse industry having held a successful Celebration of Champions World Championship Show in Fort Worth, Texas, and an entry record-breaking Stallion Stakes in Las Vegas, Nevada. This year, the Derby has a title sponsor in Scottsdale, Arizona, based DT Horses, LLC, owned by Dean and Leslie Tuftin. “We couldn’t be more grateful for Dean’s support of the NRCHA through his sponsorship of the DT Horses Western Derby,” said Anna Morrison, NRCHA executive director. “Dean’s impact on our association has been felt not only through his generous support of events like the Derby and World’s Greatest Horseman, but also through the outstanding horses he sends to our arenas and the innovative ideas he brings to the table. Partners like Dean are vital to the continued success and growth of cow horse sport.” DT Horses made a three-year commitment to the event. Based in north Scottsdale, DT Horses is home to elite rope horse facilities while also having close ties to the reined cow horse industry. Tuftin owns 2010 stallion Hickory Holly Time (One Time Pepto x Hickorys Holly Cee x Doc’s Hickory), NRCHA 2018 World’s Greatest Horseman champion, 2015 NRCHA Open Hackamore World Champion, 2014 NRCHA Open Derby Champion and 2014 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity® Intermediate Open Champion. Nineteen Ten (Hickory Holly Time x Lil Miss Shiney Chex x Shining Spark), a 2016 stallion with lifetime earnings of $117,877, is also one of DT Horses reined cow horse stars. The 13-day show includes a new event, the CD Survivor Super Spectacular, which will be held following the ever-popular Open 56
Bridle Spectacular on Thursday, June 10. Annually, the CD Survivor Memorial Spectacular, sponsored by Holy Cow Performance Horses, includes $25,000 in added-money to the top bridle horse at the event and the Super Spectacular adds an additional $5,000. This year, the CD Survivor Super Spectacular offers Open and Non Pro Spectacular exhibitors the chance to rope in a steer-stopping like event that resembles the four-event format of the NRCHA’s World’s Greatest Horseman competition. Non Pro Limited competitors at the DT Horses Western Derby will ride for more money than ever at the event. The NRCHA Board of Directors voted to add money to the Non Pro Limited Derby and the Non Pro Limited horse show class at the premier event. This year, $10,000 is added to the ever-growing and popular Non Pro Limited class. Riders compete in rein work and box a cow in this introductory class to the reined cow horse. “The Non Pro Limited class offers riders of all experience and comfort levels the opportunity to find a home in reined cow horse sport,” said Morrison. “It is often the first stop for riders new to NRCHA competition, as it allows a rider and their horse the chance to work a cow but not go down the fence. This class has proven to be a major area of growth for NRCHA and has become very competitive. The Board feels strongly about adding significant money to reflect that growth and reward the exhibitors and horses in this division.” While Non Pro Limited riders do not have restrictions in earnings for the boxing, they cannot have earned more than $750 in a down the fence class. Follow @thenrcha on Instagram and The National Reined Cow Horse Association on Facebook for daily updates from the event, as well as follow along with draws, scores and results at www. nrcha.com/scoring/. The Western Derby will be an exciting event! Based in Pilot Point, Texas, the National Reined Cow Horse Association was formed in 1949 in California, with the goal of preserving and educating the public about the rich history of this traditional horsemanship. The NRCHA is responsible for promoting the sport and ensuring high standards of competition and continuing to work to keep the Vaquero tradition alive in today’s equine industry. The NRCHA also supports numerous affiliate clubs across the United States, Europe and abroad. These groups serve as the association’s backbone, holding many NRCHA-sanctioned competitions and events each year. For more information on these events and reined cow horse, visit www.nrcha.com.

NRCHA Stallion Stakes - Open Champion Winning $43,789.40
Erin Taormino and Hazardouz Materials, owned by Linda Mars, were the Open Champions. Photo by Primo Morales Six set of finalists put on a show worthy of the Las Vegas lights on Saturday, April 3, at the South Point Arena & Equestrian Center for the 2021 National Reined Cow Horse Association Stallion Stakes Open and Non Pro Finals! When the last cow was circled Erin Taormino and Hazardouz Materials, owned by Linda Mars, were the Open Champions, and Hope Mills and A Gritty Kitty took home the Non Pro Championship. Though there were minimal bodies in the stands due to COVID-19 restrictions in place in the state of Nevada, every seat emptied when cow crew boss Lloyd Faria carried the American flag to John Wayne’s classic “America, Why I Love Her.” NRCHA member Lexi Kastanis sang the National Anthem to kick of the Finals and that uplifted spirit carried into the Non Pro, and then Open, rein work. The night wrapped with the crowd favorite fence work. The top three from each division—Non Pro, Intermediate Non Pro and Novice Non Pro as well as Open, Intermediate Open and Novice Open—re-entered the arena to learn who was taking home top titles. In addition to awarding the horse, rider and horse’s owner, the NRCHA Stallion Stakes pays an incentive to the stallion owner that subscribed to the NRHA Subscribed Stallion Program. The program is open to any breed stallion and stallion nominator must be NRCHA members in good standing. Stallion owners can annually nominate that stud’s foal crop so that it can be eligible for the incentive that pays as a portion of the Stakes event’s added money. Winning $43,789.40 as your 2021 NRCHA Stallion Stakes Derby Open Champion is Erin Taormino riding Linda Mars’ 2016 stallion Hazardouz Material (Metallic Cat x Scooters Daisy Dukes x Dual Smart Rey). The red roan and the Lipan, Texas, NRCHA professional scored a whopping 666.5 composite score to best the reserve horse and rider team by a half-point. “I kept telling myself to work with what [cow] they kick out; work with what you get and that’s what I did,” she said of her fence run. “That cow was good and my horse felt phenomenal.” 68
Hope Mills rode A Gritty Kitty to the NRCHA Stallion Stakes Non Pro Championship.. Photo by Primo Morales Receiving the win was emotional for Taormino, whose son joined her in the saddle for her dirt floor interview with Russell Dilday after the event. She was brought to tears discussing her support system. “I couldn’t do it without them, they’re amazing people. They’re the reason I can do this,” Taormino said through tears. “My family hasn’t been able to come down from Canada [because of COVID-19] my friends, my family, I have the best support system in the world.” Friday, April 2, Taormino rode the stallion to a 218.5 in the herd work. In the Finals rein work a 224 and a matching 224 down the fence carried the win. There were big scores during the four sets of cow work, but it was Hazardouz Material who saved a show for near to the end of the night, with his go in the fourth set. The Open Stallion Stakes Champion was awarded a Bob’s Custom Saddle and a Gist buckle from the NRCHA, a straw hat from Western Legacy, a gift certificate for product from Platinum Performance and an UltraCruz prize pack from Santa Cruz Animal Health. The Stallion Stakes champion sire, Metallic Cat, receives $3,500 from the Subscribed Stallion Incentive and a C.R. Morrison NRCHA trophy. In reserve was Saddling At Sunrise (WR This Cats Smart x Sunshine Ingredient x Mr Sun O Lena), a 2016 stallion owned by the Burnett Ranches LLC, winning $32, 263.66 for the title with Kelby Phillips, of Weatherford, Texas, in the saddle. Their composite score of 666 (Herd 219 /Rein 221.5 /Cow 225.5) included the high cow score of the night. Phillips was reserve and third place in the Finals. The Reserve Champion received a Gist buckle from the NRCHA, a $300 gift certificate from Farnam for product, an UltraCruz prize pack from Santa Cruz Animal Health and a pair of DyNo Turn fleece bell boots from the NRCHA. The sire of the reserve champion, WR This Cats Smart, receives $2,000 from the Subscribed Stallion Program incentive. Hope Mills riding A Gritty Kitty (Chiquita Cat x Scooters Daisy Dukes x Dual Smart Rey) topped a deep Non Pro field of talented horses and riders to capture the 2021 NRCHA Stallion Stakes Non Pro Derby Champion title. Mills and the 2017 mare scored a 653.5 (Herd 217/Rein 216.5/Cow 220) for the win. Having only purchased continued on page 70

the mare right before the Celebration of Champions in February, Mills brought her to the Stakes as a trial run. To say A Gritty Kitty passed the test is an understatement. “This is our first big horse show together, so I am super happy that everything worked out,” Mills said. “She is super special because she gives me so much
and tries so hard. We are still trying to get meshed together. My expectations weren’t high because we are getting to know each other. She just gave it all to me.” Coincidently, A Gritty Kitty was shown by Erin Taormino as a 3-year-old, and is a half-sister
to the Open Champion, sharing a dam in Scooters Daisy Dukes. Mills has a lot more confidence going into their next premier NRCHA event, the DT Horses Western Derby in June, she said. The Non Pro Champion is awarded $8,207.55 and receives a custom Bob’s Saddle and Gist buckle from the NRCHA, a straw hat from Western Legacy,

The National Reined Cow Horse Association Stallion Stakes features 4- and 5-yearolds by NRCHA Subscribed Stallions competing in snaffle bits and hackamores. The competition includes many of the top Snaffle Bit Futurity® horses from the previous year, as well as those who might not have been ready for the Futurity, but who are now able to perform competitively. For our Non Pro Limited riders entered in the derby event, this includes their 6-yearold mounts. The Subscribed Stallion Program is open to any breed stallion and the stallion nominator’s must be NRCHA members in good standing. Stallion owners can annually nominate that stud’s foal crop so that it can be eligible for the incentive that pays as a portion of the Stakes event’s added money. Oliver Townend and Boyd Martin Take the Wins
Oliver Townend completed a hat trick this year at the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event presented by MARS Equestrian™, adding a third consecutive win at a venue that the British eventer describes as “the most special in the world.” In 2018 and 2019, Townend took the top spot in the CCI5*-L with Cooley Master Class, but this year it was Ballaghmor Class, the 14-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding owned by Karyn Shuter, Angela Hislop, and Val Ryan, taking the win.

AQHA Executive Vice President Craig Huffhines AQHA Executive Announces Resignation Vice President Craig Huffhines announced his resignation, and AQHA Chief Legal Counsel Chad Pierce is named interim executive vice president.
On April 27, the American Quarter Horse Association announced that AQHA Executive Vice President Craig Huffhines is leaving the Association to pursue an opportunity in the equine and livestock industry. “It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the American Quarter Horse Association as executive vice president,” said Huffhines. “I am proud of my staff, the AQHA Past Presidents, AQHA Executive Committee and
80
AQHA Board of Directors, whom I served over the past six years. What we have accomplished together during my tenure is quite remarkable. Some of these accomplishments include navigating business during a worldwide pandemic, instituting welfare reform standards for the horse, stewarding a major information technology challenge, providing remote service capabilities for membership services, assembling a talented and passionate leadership team, and creating financial stability and sustainability, all which position AQHA as a modern
service provider for the equine industry. AQHA’s staff and leadership team are poised for good things to come with AQHA business and membership transactions in an upward trend.” "We will miss Craig and his influence and leadership at the Association,” said AQHA President Norman K. Luba. “Craig navigated the Association through a monumental database conversion and remote service platform that allowed us to continue working during the pandemic. Over the years, he has compiled a strong team of staff

with talents and professionalism that will continue to propel AQHA into the future. Though we will miss him, the AQHA Executive Committee and I have full faith in Interim Executive Vice President Chad Pierce to maintain the precedent set by Craig. We will work quickly to find the right person to fill the role and wish Craig and his family the best in his new endeavor.” Pierce has been with AQHA for more than 12 years as the Association’s chief legal counsel. Prior to his tenure with AQHA, Pierce was on staff with the Underwood Law Firm in Amarillo, where he served as the lead attorney for AQHA support beginning in 2003. He has successfully navigated countless equine welfare cases for the Association to set a standard to protect the American Quarter Horse.

New Yearling Sale Planned for 2021 The Run For A Million
A new, select yearling sale organizers say will feature high-end reining-bred yearlings and a focus on transparency for buyers is planned for this year’s The Run For A Million horse show in Las Vegas, Nevada. Called the Gala Select Breeders Sale, the event will be limited to 50 yearlings out of dams who have either won or produced the winners at
least $50,000. It will be held Saturday, August 21 at the South Point Equestrian Center. Sale producer Amanday Brumley, who also produces The Run For A Million, said a major goal of the sale is to provide consigners a platform that is able to highlight the quality of a select group of high-end horses that, in many cases, might be more likely
to sell privately rather than go through a public auction. She said consignments could come from large, well-known ranches as well as smaller operations that only have a small number of mares that meet the criteria. The consignment application deadline is May 21. “It’s about let’s understand what the quality of these mare’s
produce [is] and, then what the transparency [is] that needs to be done to ensure that these buyers are as comfortable as they possibly can be in spending a lot of money on these horses,” she said. The sale will be part of the festivities at The Run For A Million, which will once again feature a milliondollar invitational for reiners, a $100,000 Open Shootout, a fence work challenge for cow horses as well as events for freestyle, rookie and non-pro reiners. Gala Select Breeders Sale Transparency - The Gala Select Breeders Sale will feature a number of transparency measures – including evaluation of X-rays and the yearlings themselves by a panel of veterinarians – to increase buyer confidence. In order to be considered for the Gala Select Breeders Sale, yearlings must have a set of X-rays sent in to sale officials. The X-rays, which must have been taken within 10 days of application, will be reviewed by a panel of veterinarians in order to be accepted into the sale. “In the contract, there’s a list of X-rays that are required upon application, which include all four fetlocks, knees, front feet, hocks and stifles,” Brumley said. “And I have a panel of five veterinarians all reviewing these X-rays.” Every yearling also will be evaluated by veterinarians at the South Point two days before the sale.

The duo is back together. Kaleb Driggers and Junior Nogueira, who separated in May 2020, have joined forces again. The Driggers-Nogueira reunion began at RFD-TV's The American Semi-finals, and they've been moving forward since. They will be back in action Wednesday and Thursday in slack at the Guymon (Okla.) Pioneer Days Rodeo. The ProRodeo Tour stop runs April 30 through May 2 and will be broadcast live on The Cowboy Channel and streamed on the PRCA on Cowboy Channel Plus App. "I'm happy to be back with Kaleb, and we are working hard to get everything back together," Nogueira said. "We know the competition is so tough. Everybody ropes great, and I know if I do my job and focus on what I'm doing, we will be OK."
Nogueira is fourth in the heeling PRCA | RAM World Standings, while Driggers is 14th in heading. Nogueira received a huge boost in the standings when he teamed with Dustin Egusquiza to earn $21,706 at the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo in Kissimmee, Fla, April 9-10. "That was my first time at the RAM Finals, and it was an amazing rodeo, and that money I won there helped a lot," Nogueira said. "Kaleb and I placed third in the average last weekend in Clovis, and we just want to get back in rhythm." Nogueira roped with Cody Snow from late May of last season until March this season. They qualified for the 2020 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and finished 12th in their respective heeler and header world standings. When Nogueira departed, Snow joined Wesley Thorp, whom Driggers had been roping with. In 2019, Snow teamed with Thorp to win the average at the NFR. The duo won Round 7 and placed in six rounds to finish with 43.8 seconds on nine head, and Thorp won the team roping heeling world title. "Cody and Wesley also wanted to get back together, so everything worked out pretty good for everybody," Nogueira said. In 2016, Nogueira became the first Brazilian world champion in PRCA history when he won the all-around title after earning $231,728. He finished second in heeling that season with $230,284. Driggers and Nogueira tied the team roping world record with a 3.3-second run in Round 9 of the 2017 NFR. They also have won a total of six rounds at the Finals since 2017 – Rounds 1 and 9 in 2017, Round 8 in 2018, and Rounds 8 (split the win), 9 and 10 in 2019.

We are hopeful that restrictions will ease up more as we move closer to the dates so that our Induction Weekend this year will look very similar to events of the past.” The Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo is scheduled for July 14-17. The rodeo at the Norris Penrose Event Center in Colorado Springs was postponed due to the pandemic in 2020. The rodeo, which paid out more than $280,000 in 2019, draws the best cowboys and cowgirls in North America. “Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo is extremely proud to be considered the PRCA’s hometown rodeo,” said Mike McCoy, president of the PPOB Rodeo. “And as such, we welcome the ProRodeo Hall of Fame and its inductees to the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo to be our guests to celebrate their huge milestone of being inducted into the Hall.” The golf tournament will have breakfast and registration at 6:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. Lunch and awards will follow at 12:30 p.m. More information, including hotel info, ticket sales and details for the golf tournament fundraiser, is available at https://bit.ly/3nfY8U1.

Hill Lands Double USTRC
Championship Titles After Clinching the #15.5 Shootout
Bobby Joe Hill of Hill Rodeo Cattle was one of four ropers to take top honors in the #16.5 Shootout during the Cinch USTRC National Finals—Hill and Joseph Harrison splitting the win with brothers Kreece and Tyson Thompson. Fast forward several hours and he would head back to the Winner's Circle at the John Justin Arena at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, to recap his runs with Colton Brittain in the #15.5 Shootout. Hill and Brittain were third high callback and laid down a 7.10 second run in the shortgo to finish with a 28.74 on four head worth $33,000, Gist Buckles, Resistol Hats and Horse Power Boots. After roping with Hill, Brittain rode right back in the box with Jason Burson at second high call, but they went out with a no-time. High call did the same. From behind the Priefert Sports desk Hill and Brittain shared some lighthearted banter with host Dru Stewart as well as the full story on what happened prior to their third steer in the outdoor pavilion arena. Aboard the slick black gelding he borrowed from Clay Smith, Hill found himself high centered on the back of the Priefert box. "When you are horseback it's a lot higher than you think," Hill laughed. "Mr. Smith, being the nice guy that he is, is just leaning on the panel with his arms crossed while I'm hollering for help. Almost like this had happened before. I told Colton afterwards that we were fixing to go podcast and tell everyone about this. It was kind of a joke, but it turned out I was right." Once grounded Hill loped him in a circle to make sure he was on all four and backed into the box and they laid down their second fastest run of the roping with a 7.09. The episode didn't phase the 22-year-old heeler from Rockwall, Texas. "I never thought about it again," said Brittain, who despite a no-time in the shortgo finished ninth in the Average with Burson— the division surprisingly paying several teams on three head. 88

New Tax Plan for Farms
See More Reviews at www.askmichelleshelton.com/michelle-shelton/reviews-2//
FEBRUARY 2021
83
WASHINGTON, April 28, 2021 — The American Families Plan includes critical tax reform to ensure that the wealthy pay their fair share of taxes in order to finance essential investments in workers and families, including childcare, nutrition, higher education and more. One of those reforms is a change in the way capital gains are treated in our tax system so that, for people making over $1 million, the tax system no longer favors income from wealth over income from work. The plan won’t raise taxes on anyone making less than $400,000 a year. Part of this plan to make sure the wealthy pay their fair share is a proposal to close the “stepped-up basis” loophole for wealthy estates so that enormous fortunes do not completely escape taxation. Under the proposal, unrealized capital gains (those that have never been previously taxed) are taxed at death above $2 million in gains per couple. But this won’t affect family farms that stay in the family. Under this proposal, estimates indicate more than 98% of farm estates will not owe any tax at transfer, provided the farm stays in the family. The tax the remaining less than 2% would owe, would be on their non-farm assets. The President recognizes the importance of agriculture and family farms to the American economy and way of life. He also recognizes the risks and economic challenges unique to agriculture, family farms and ranching operations across America. The Biden Administration is committed to American agriculture, family farms, ranches and the rural way of life. The American Families Plan protects family farms and ranches in two key ways: No capital gains taxes at death for family farms. This plan includes a special protection for family-owned farms and businesses. It defers any tax liability on family farms as long as the farm remains family-owned and operated. No tax is due if the farm stays in the family. No one should have to sell a family farm they inherit to pay taxes and the President’s tax reform guarantees that. $2 million exclusion from increased capital gains for all married couples. This plan also excludes the first $2 million of gains per couple ($2.5 million if the farm also includes the family home) from capital gains tax and heirs continue to get step up in basis on those first $2 million in gains. If an heir decides to sell the family farm, the first $2 million in gains is tax free. How the President’s Capital Gains Reforms Affect Family Farms: A married couple with $900,000 of farm gains and $200,000 of nonfarm gains passes the farm onto their children. No capital gains taxes are owed, even if they sell the farm because the $1.1 million in gains are below the $2 million per-couple exemption. A married couple with $3.0 million of farm gains and $250,000 of nonfarm housing gains passes the farm onto their children. No taxes due as long as the children keep the family farm. The President’s capital gains reforms are a key part of building a tax code that rewards work, and not wealth. The American Jobs Plan and the American Families Plan are once-in-a-generation investments in our nation’s future. The American Jobs Plan will create millions of good jobs, rebuild our country’s physical infrastructure and workforce, and spark innovation and manufacturing here at home. The American Families Plan invests $1.8 trillion in our children and our families—helping families cover the basic expenses that so many struggle with now, lowering health insurance premiums, cutting child poverty, and producing a larger, more productive, and healthier workforce in the years ahead. Together, these plans reinvest in the future of American families, American workers, and the American economy.

USEF Announces Spectator Protocols for USEF-Licensed Competitions
US Equestrian has updated its COVID-19 Action Plan for Licensed Competitions (Action Plan) to include protocols specific to allowing spectator attendance at a limited capacity beginning May 3, 2021. Last week, US Equestrian announced the maximum capacity for spectators at competitions in its April 14 communication. This follow-up announcement of the specific spectator protocols will provide competition organizers, licensed officials, and other stakeholders with sufficient time to prepare for a return of spectators beginning May 3, 2021. These protocols represent a first step in implementing responsible measures that allow the equestrian sport

community to begin to ease restrictions related to the pandemic. USEF realizes that the maximum capacity figures provided may not be appropriate for all venues. Therefore, due to size, configuration, or other factors, some competitions’ capacity limits may be far lower than the maximum numbers allowable under the USEF protocols. It is important to note that allowing spectators at USEF competitions remains a choice for competition organizers. In some instances, venue limitations or other restrictions may not accommodate the ability to safely allow spectators. USEF will support any organizer’s decision to restrict further or prohibit spectator access. As more and more Americans become vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus, USEF is optimistic it will be able to further ease restrictions in the coming months. It is critical that everyone continues to adhere to the Action Plan and its requirements in the interim.

The WPRA Chief Operating Officer (COO) is responsible for all the hands on operational aspects of the WPRA activities and is a critical partner to the WPRA President in terms of growing and ensuring a healthy and viable not for profit membership based business. In addition, the COO leads the office team, headquartered in Colorado Springs, handling the day-today operations to be efficient, productive, and effective. As the Board Executive Secretary, in conjunction with the President, will help facilitate special teleconference and in-person board meetings as well as help facilitate other duties of the WPRA Board of Directors including but not limited to what is set forth in the official rulebook. “The WPRA is excited to have Darla Lindt join our team,” said Heidi Schmidt, WPRA Vice President. “Darla brings to the table a vast knowledge of business from many diverse areas and we cannot wait to see what contributions she is able to make. “The hiring process, when replacing a trusted and valued employee such as Janet Cropper, was a long and very well thought out one. Again, we are excited to welcome Darla to the WPRA team, and look forward to working with her to help the association flourish.” Lindt is a resident of Colorado Springs and prior to joining the WPRA was a branch owner of an insurance agency specializing in cyber insurance and farm/ ranch policies. She served as the Executive Director at the National Cyber Exchange (NCX), a nonprofit member organization. Her other background includes being one of the first employees of a Nutri-System franchise owner, who opened the Colorado Springs market in the late 80s and early 90s.

Jumps To The Top Of The Steeplechase World In the world of Thoroughbred racing, famous jockeys are commonplace in every horsehousehold. In the U.S., there’s “Big Money” Mike Smith of Zenyatta and Arrogate fame. There’s three-time consecutive Eclipse Awardwinning Champion Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., who many jokingly believe could win a race on a donkey—riding backwards. And, of course, internationally, there is Lanfranco “Frankie” Dettori, who is only slightly better known than his most successful equine partner, the recently retired Breeders’ Cup Turf and double Arc-winning mare, Enable.
The female side of jockeydom has been mostly relegated to U.S. historical figures. There was Diane Crump, the first and Julie Krone, the winningest. More recently, Canadian Chantal Sutherland combined successful riding and modeling careers and, in the U.S., Rosie Napravnik became famous for her last ride, winning the Breeders’ Cup Distaff on Untapable in 2014…while newly pregnant with her first child. History is getting an update.

By: Laura Lemon Courtesy Chronicle of the Horse Debbie McDonald’s beloved Grand Prix partner Brentina has died at In The Irons Farm in Santa Barbara, California. She was 30. The chestnut Hanoverian mare (Brentano II—Lieselotte, Lungau) and McDonald were the first Americans to win the FEI World Cup Final in dressage in 2003. Owned by Peggy and the late E. Parry
Brentina, U.S. Dressage Superhorse and FEI World Cup Final Winner, Dies Thomas, “Mama” blossomed into a staple and international powerhouse for U.S. dressage. She earned double gold at the 1999 Winnipeg Pan American Games, a team silver and bronze at the 2002 and 2006 FEI World Equestrian Games (as well as individual fourth in
2002), and a team bronze and individual fourth-placed finish in the 2004 Athens Olympics. Brentina famously brought the audience to their feet in the 2005 Las Vegas World Cup Final when she performed her freestyle to Commodores’ “Brick House” and Aretha

Franklin’s “Respect.” The moment became McDonald’s memory of a lifetime and earned her a third-placed finish. She was named the Farnam/Platform USEF Horse of the Year that year. Mama returned to Las Vegas and retired at the Thomas & Mack Arena in 2009. She was later inducted into the U.S. Dressage Federation’s Hall of Fame. The Young Adult “Brentina Cup” Program is named in her honor and supports up-and-coming dressage riders. In a statement, McDonald thanked In The Irons Farm owners Christi and Kate Sulzbac, veterinarians Dr. Rick Mitchell and Dr. Kristi Timm, mentor Klaus Balkenhol, and longtime groom Ruben Palomera. “Without Brentina and the Thomas family, I would not be in the position I am now,” McDonald said. “Thank you, Brentina, for all you have done. Hope you are running the fields, eating as much as you want, and that Parry is feeding you lots of bananas! You were my horse of a lifetime; no other can compare.”

Bull rider Joe Frost retires due to injury
Courtesy of PRCA Bull rider Joe Frost, a five-time National Finals Rodeo qualifier, announced his retirement due to injury. The Randlett, Utah, native, who suffers from blood clots, made the NFR five consecutive years (2014-18) and earned $1.2 million in the PRCA. "This hasn't been a fun decision," Frost, 28, told rodeo reporter Kendra Santos recently. "I knew the answer, I just wasn't excited about it. But riding bulls is risky enough without being on blood thinners. And I need to be on them indefinitely. My biggest goal in life is to be a good husband and father. My bull riding chapter has to close, but I'm really excited about what's next in my life, too." Frost is the older brother of bull rider Josh Frost, who was fifth in the 2021 PRCA | RAM World Standings as of April 20, and second cousin of the late and legendary Lane Frost.

The Bureau of Land Management Celebrates 75th Birthday
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is celebrating 75 years by inviting everyone to reimagine your public lands. For over seven decades, the BLM has led the way in public land management – in 1946, President Truman merged the General Land Office and the Grazing Service to create the BLM. Today, the BLM proudly manages about 245 million acres of public landscapes for all Americans.
102
“For the last 75 years, the BLM has been tasked to manage our nation’s lands for the benefit of all Americans,” said Laura Daniel-Davis, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Management. “As we look toward the future, public lands will continue to play a key role in our efforts to battle climate change while supporting local communities and economies. I look forward
to working with the BLM to ensure those public lands are around for many generations to come.” As the premier federal land management agency, the BLM oversees more land, approximately one-tenth of America’s land base, and more subsurface mineral estate, about 700 million acres, than any other government agency. “As a multiple-use agency, it’s important to remember
MAY 2021
that the BLM manages public lands for everyone,” said Nada Wolff Culver, BLM Deputy Director, Policy and Programs, exercising the delegated authority of the BLM director. “Whether you are finding peace and solitude on the aweinspiring landscapes managed by BLM or relying on federal grazing permits to support your ranching enterprise, our public lands are an important part of American’s lives.
