PRCA, TETON RIDGE ANNOUNCE PIVOTAL PARTNERSHIP TETON RIDGE BECOMES PRESENTING SPONSOR OF THE NFR
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (October 28, 2021) – The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association®, and Teton Ridge today announced a multi-year deal for Teton Ridge to become the presenting sponsor of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. Teton Ridge is a brand dedicated to promoting and preserving iconic western culture. Since 1985, Las Vegas has played host to the NFR, except for 2020 when the NFR was moved to Arlington, Texas, because of COVID-19 restrictions in place in Las Vegas. The NFR is a culmination of more than 600 PRCA-sanctioned events within the regular season. Las Vegas Events, the special events coordinator for the rodeo, projects 17,000 people in attendance at every performance at the Thomas & Mack Center, or 170,000 total. The total estimated economic impact of the NFR was more than $175 million in 2019 according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. "This is great to partner with Teton Ridge as the presenting sponsor of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, the richest and most prestigious rodeo in the world," PRCA CEO Tom Glause said. "It's extremely pleasing when you can partner with an organization whose beliefs align with ours. We look forward to this being a great relationship moving forward." Emphasizing the same commitment to excellence that is exhibited in all Teton Ridge's integrations, the dedicated westernpreservation brand will place a special focus on elevating the PRCA World Champion crowning ceremony. "A PRCA world title received at the NFR is one of the most treasured achievements in rodeo," Teton Ridge CEO Jonathan Katz said. "Celebrating champions and the hard work that goes into rising to the top levels of each rodeo discipline is at the core of Teton Ridge. Aligning with PRCA and LVE as part of this iconic year-end event, we want to join them in honoring western sports and the tremendous professionals competing for world titles in a very prestigious way." The partnership comes on the heels of Teton Ridge's recent move to bring The American under the brand's umbrella and elevate the richest single-day rodeo in the world to new levels in March 2022 in Arlington, Texas, including an unmatched total purse of more than $3 million, non-stop rodeo action, live music, entertainment and more. The industry-leading event is the centerpiece of the brand's western sports portfolio. 18
Adding the NFR partnership was a natural next step for Teton Ridge and further illustrates the significance placed on celebrating excellence at the top levels of the rodeo world. Q & A with Doug Huls AzQHA CEO / Sun Circuit
Q - During COVID you steered Sun Circuit clear of the hazards and had two great years in 2020 and 2021. The event and related experiences for the exhibitor has steadily grown. What is driving the growth of Sun Circuit. A - The Sun Circuit has grown because it is a fun show. It is very, very competitive, but at the same time there is not the feeling of that tension that “I’ve gotta win” like at the World Show, or the NRHA Futurity has. Many people come just to enjoy horse-showing and there is not another really big event with that energy out there. Exhibitors want to have fun, and they can, and they can be super competitive if they want to at the same time, and at the same event. You can work hard to win at the Sun Circuit, but still have fun. Our show is one of the very few shows in the Country where you can have all of the top folks from; CowHorse, Reining , All-Around, Roping and Pleasure horse all on the Showgrounds at the same time. The camaraderie is what we offer, packaged in a snapshot event that features every aspect of the industry all showing at the same place and time. You get to see a lot of old friends that you would not see at other horse shows like at the AQHA World. Where they come in for the Reining and then leave, they are not there (for the most part) for the entire event. I remember when I was still showing, I would go all year without seeing Benny Guitron or Bob Avila (when he lived in California) until Sun Circuit. You may not see Corey Cushing, even if you live in the same state, until Sun Circuit. All of them are on the Showgrounds at the same time here at Westworld, so you get to see all the top riders and old friends. That is a big piece of why it is fun and what grows that camaraderie that we have. The Sun Circuit has a good energy. We have to pay attention to that energy, and then you also have to work hard to create that energy. 22
Q - You’ve built a strong team to produce the event yet suffered a big loss this year with the passing of Dorn Parkinson. How are you moving forward without him? A - Dorn had been preparing us for his departure a long time. He very much had been preparing me and had often said to me that, “I will not be doing this all the time”. We of course did not expect him to pass away, but he always had been planning an exit strategy, because he knew he was not going to be there forever. - So he built that into the program right from the start. Q - What were the key things Dorn brought to the table that were the most valuable for you?
qualifying from AQHA. The one thing that Dorn made sure that I knew, was that this will be successful if you run it like a business. Q - How important has WestWorld of Scottsdale become for your event? A - Westworld and Scottsdale are huge in that, other than the New Ocala location, there is no facility that is located in such a nice area. North Scottsdale is primo! Other than Ocala there is no place located in that quality of a geographical area. Then, with the expansion of Westworld, having the North Hall and the climate controlled arenas was a drastic change. Our numbers have been going up since 2011, but between changing the event dates to March and the addition of the North Hall area, the numbers have continued to grow. We have had unprecedented growth every year.
Q - The North Hall arenas addition and the moving the event dates to March, was a real leap of faith for you and AzQHA to pull the trigger on implementing.
A - Absolutely! In a group with a board, there is a lot of going back and forth. Westworld wanted to move the dates and I presented that to the board a few years earlier and it got shot down. After 2 or 3 years of poor Doug Huls and Brian Dygert WestWorld of Scottsdale GM weather, when I presented it the second time, A - Dorn was a numbers guy. He mena couple of trainers said “this is the time, tored me on understanding the budgets we think we need to do this”. I said to the and that to be successful you have to run board, “I think we can capitalize on this” it as a business. That was the ONE thing and they agreed. When we voted on it, it he ingrained into my head, and to have a sure was a scary time, but they supported budget. That in order for the business to be the recommendation and it has worked out successful you have increase stall counts, very well. Every year we have a Bond payyou have to increase entries, etc. You have ment to the City of Scottsdale whether we to increase your revenue sources and at have an event or not. It was a huge leap of the same time manage your expenses. faith to make that commitment financially, Those are all pieces that go together. Him but AzQHA wanted to grow alongside Westmaking me understand this, that if you run world and the City of Scottsdale. this like a business and your marketing is to increase the revenue streams you will be Q - You pioneered placing arenas in the successful, and then you can sustain and North Hall for the benefit of the exhibitor, at continue on. When you look at other Assignificant expense. sociations that do not run it as a business, A - The building has a great feel. I have they are looking at how they are going to always said that. When you ride in there, make it. Especially between COVID and no the ceiling, the design, I don’t know if it was NOVEMBER 2021
done intentionally because it was built as a multi use building. Some buildings just do not have that feel, but this building really has a good feel, and that has been a big, big plus. Being able to put the sand down in the East Courtyard, and having an arena there too with the extra warm-up area has really helped our event. Because that is one of our biggest problems now, believe it or not, there is just no enough warm-up space, as big as it is. We have played around with different arena arrangements, we have learned as we go, we have made some mistakes. Now with the new layout that is 3 arenas inside the North Hall and the East Coutyard as a 4th arena (all contained within the North Hall area) plus the warm-up that was added to the Equidome area on the East side when the improvements were done, has been tremendous for us! All of those things together are what really makes this work.
porary infrastructure to get more stalls, more RV’s and to accommodate as many people as possible. There may be a couple of things we can do for more arena space as we continue to grow. It becomes more challenging each year, that is for sure. It is a GOOD challenge for us!

Q - You moved Cutting to Sun Circuit in the warm-up area on the East side of the EquiDome cover and the New Horse Sale. Both of these New added events kick off the showA - The Cutting guys love it in that area, it has worked out so well. The only thing is there is really no good viewing area for spectators right there, but the horsemen love it!
Q - Scottsdale reports that Sun Circuit is the largest Equestrian contributor of revenue and benefit to WestWorld in 2020 & 2021. Is there still room for growth? A - The Sun Circuit can grow more, but we have been selling out of RV spots, we can make room for more stalls, but we are little land locked on arenas. There can be some growth, but it will be limited until we can tackle some of the areas where we are locked in due to restraints that are based on simply what Westworld has to offer. Each year, we have already been bringing in tem-

NRHA Markel Futurity Sales New Website and App for 2021
Researching, bidding, and buying a horse at the National Reining Horse Association Markel Futurity Sales just got easier. The Futurity Sales Task Force has unveiled a new and interactive website and app for the Sales, which are slated for December 2 at the NRHA Futurity & Adequan® North American Affiliate Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla.
it quick and easy to buy online,” Honeywell shared. Honeywell noted that the new website and app are just the latest changes made by the Futurity Sales Task Force to continue upping the game and maintain the Sales’ position as the preeminent sale for reining horses. “The feedback from our consignors has been incredible. They are excited about the increased marketing potential the new platform offers,” she said. Registration is simple. Visit the website at auctions. nrha.com Click “Login,” which can be found at the top of the page. Registered users can then enter their username and password. New users will have to click the “Sign Up Now” link. Fill in your personal information. Registering to bid is equally simple. Login to your account. Click “Register to Bid.” Fill in your information and a credit card for verification. The credit card will be authorized for $5,000, but the card will not be charged. Online buyers will be contacted after the sale to see how they want to pay; the card will not be automatically charged. Honeywell strongly urges all prospective buyers to complete the registration process early, including credit card preauthorization. “We do suggest doing this prior to the Sales in case buyers have any issues we need to help them with. Of course, people can just register by supplying their name and email address to start watching the horses,” she said. To view the consigned horses, visit auctions.nrha.com Find the NRHA Futurity Sales app on the App Store or Google Play. The NRHA Markel Futurity Sales will also be live-streamed on the new site, and there is are plenty of new features to make researching and sharing favorite horses simpler. “I think my favorite feature of the new website and app is that the horses’ photos, videos, and pedigree are all on one page. This makes it quick and easy for buyers to see all the information easily on their phone, tablet or computer,” noted NRHA Senior Manager of ReinerSuite and Futurity Sales. “My other favorite feature is the app for your phone. Most people always have a phone handy. The app makes it easy to look at sale horses on the phone or bring up a horse quickly to show it to someone else.” The website and app boast cool features such as push notifications, the ability to mark favorite horses, and more. “For example, if a buyer ‘watches’ a lot, it will notify them five lots before it sells so they don’t miss it. SHERIDAN INTERVIEW BY TRACY WAGER NOVEMBER 2021

TAYLOR SHERIDAN INTERVIEW BY TRACY WAGER
Q - Yellowstone – did you expect it to be as big a hit as the series
has become? A - I knew from the beginning that it had the potential, it relied upon my execution. It relied upon a lot of things, but yes, I did. I knew it had the potential to be the biggest thing on TV, and it is, now. But what happened over the past two years, our numbers after Season 3 were a massive 10.5 million viewers worldwide with the season finale. But then what happened was COVID. Then all of the city kids found it. They discovered it in New York, in L.A. and it became hip to be a cowboy again. Which was the goal. But now it has become such a juggernaut. Season 4 of Yellowstone is the most purchased show of any TV show on iTunes, and it isn’t even out yet! Those are pre-orders. I feel like, there is no telling what the numbers will be when this airs in a few weeks. I am really anxious to see. Real curious to see. The goal was to have it bigger than the “Who shot JR on Dallas.”
Q - When you wrote the part of Rip, did you realize going into it he would galvanize such a large fan base? A - No. I knew the character was iconic, and sort of this throwback to the black hat with the good heart. I did not even know at the time that I was going to write this romance between Rip and Beth that seems to have just enamored the audience. I had this unique opportunity to avoid all of the cliches that we see in these romances and let these two hideously flawed people be the perfect couple. It has been a lot of fun to explore that. ‘
a big guy, but there is also a quiet intensity to him that perfect for the character. I did not even read him for it, I just offered it to him. When I told him about the part, he wanted to do it. In my business, which is largely dominated by people that have come from two places, and both are these massive urban areas. Many times, they say that “The Western is dead,” but it’s dead because people do not know that World. Its authenticity is the most important element of it and the audience knows when it is fake. Even an audience that is not made up of equine enthusiasts, they still know. I strive to make everything real. I figure if it looks real, it will be dramatic. I don’t try to make things look dramatic; I try to make things look real. That is the reason I spend so much time with these actors at what I call Cowboy Camp. They are on horseback 8 hours a day, and we are trying to get them as comfortable as possible, so I can utilize them to do things on horseback. The more comfortable they are, the more I can film it, the more that I can show the World.
Q - Why did Kevin Costner support you in playing
Q - I think that everyone can relate to being flawed and still find the that perfect someone else that is flawed, can they?A - 100%, I mean show me the perfect person. Q - Cole Hauser had not worked with you prior - Why did you choose Cole Hauser for the part?
46
A - No, but I was a big admirer of his work for a long time. He is
John Dutton? A - He was really intrigued by this World. When he read the script, he really responded to it. This is a genre he is familiar with. He has done a few Westerns, and he was fortunate that all of the Westerns he was in were very well done. A couple of them, he directed himself. He enjoys this World, and thru this lens. He had never seen something about a modern-day ranch, albeit highly dramatized and fictionalized, but he had never seen this World presented this way before. He splits his time between California, and he has a ranch in Colorado, so it is a World that he knows. He also wanted to be a part of something like this that was physical. We were very excited to have him. We had met before and had tried to find a couple of projects to do together. When I sent him this script, and he read it, he was in.
NOVEMBER 2021
Q - When we first meet at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center, back in 2010, you were the best on horseback of any of the celebrities that rode there. How did you learn to ride? A - I grew up on a ranch and rode my whole life. The funny thing is, I didn’t really like it that much when I was a kid. We had to do it. I worked on some ranches during the Summers, and you know, when you are 14, 16, 18 years old and getting a horse job is not that exciting. When I graduated from High School, I don’t know that I got on a horse again until I was in my late 20’s, when I would go up to Wyoming. I bounced around up there, pulled some pack trips, and again, it was a job. It wasn’t really until I discovered Reining that I really fell in love with it, the riding. I enjoyed the horses, but it was Reining that made me fall in love with the horses.
Q - Back than it were tough times for you
making it in LA on the acting pay from Sons of Anarchy – and you walked away and really struggled. Then, boom you hit it big! Biggest swing for anyone we’ve ever seen, the real comeback-kid story American’s love. How does that make you feel? A - The journey was so difficult. I had met my wife, and we had fallen in love, and we were moving to Wyoming. I was trying to buy this little place in Wyoming when I was re-negotiating my deal with Sons of Anarchy for Season 3, and they offered me really poor money. Like not enough to be able to buy a $300,000 house in Star Valley, Wyoming. They said, “Look, you are right.” I still remember when their attorney said, “You do deserve more, but we are not going to pay you more because we don’t have to. You are just a Journeyman, that is all you are ever going to be. So, take your licks and be quiet”. I realized right then that they are right, and how can I raise my son in this town and tell him he could be whatever he wants to be, but I am going to miss his Soccer practice because I am going to a Windex commercial audition, or whatever the case may be. So, I decided I was done telling other people’s stories, I was going to tell my own, and I quit and started writing. It was two years before I sold a script, and we were down to our last nickel. In fact, I had gotten a job up in Wyoming at the headwaters of Grovont as the wrangler to wrangle all of the horses for this Dude ranch. They didn’t allow kids in the employee housing, so my wife and my baby were going to have to stay in a trailer park in Pinedale. Which, as you can image, none of us were happy about. We were pretty desperate, so I sold all of my horses, we got moved out of our house and into a crummy
apartment. My wife took jobs, and I took any job that I could get, as far as anything! Mow lawns, do anything. I taught acting classes, I did everything I could and then finally I sold “Hell or High Water”. The day it sold I had $800.00 in my bank account and rent was coming up.
Q - You really did it, looking back on that time, and knowing that
you said how you would write your way out of trouble, it sounded rather far-fetched, Hollywood is so tough – and you’ve done it now over, and over. Back then, what did you think your chances were of hitting it big? A - What I believed was what I had worked for as an actor. I had read, I don’t know how many scripts over my career, 500 or a 1,000? I could not remember 5 that were great stories. Now, I wasn’t Brad Pitt, so I wasn’t getting the scripts he was reading, but I sat down one day and said, “I have no idea how to do this, but I know how not to do it. Because I have been reading bad scripts my entire career”. So, I decided to tell a story about something I cared about. To be honest, to be very disciplined and economical, don’t explain things with the dialogue, explain things with the vista of what I am seeing and then just let the characters talk about it. It is really that simple. Hell or High Water for me, was a story about where I lived in West Texas as a kid. It was on fire, everybody was selling everything they had, as far as horses and cattle because there was no food. All the auction houses even closed down. They would not even take any more cattle. It was watching this way of life, that seemed like a constant to Me die. So, Hell or High Water was for the love of Texas, and an homage to a way of life that seemed like it was disappearing.
Q - You are premiering Y:1883 on
November 19, right after Yellowstone, and Mayor of Kingstown with Jeremy Renner, truly one of my favorite actors, on November 26th, again, right after Yellowstone. A real double, double-header! Wow, imagine the pressure as an artist, producer, and businessmanHow will you maintain control with all of your obligations? A - I do it very different that anyone else does it and Paramount lets me. I don’t know how to make a TV show, I know how to make an independent movie, because that’s what I had made. What I did, was make Yellowstone like I made a movie. I wrote all the scripts and then we went and filmed it. Then I cut it together and then we aired it. By Paramount trusting me, and letting me just treat it like that, without committees and all these things and notes and whatever. They said, “Just go make it good Taylor.” Which is what I did. It streamlined the process. Mayor was quite difficult because it shot in Canada. I just keep my head down and keep working, if I look up it gets to be too daunting. So, I just keep my head down and work.

TAYLOR SHERIDAN INTERVIEW
Q - Yellowstone has opened the door for more Western, and
equestrian exposure in movies, television, videos, movies and online. Since Paramount’s production of Urban Cowboy and CBS’s production of Dallas in 1978 (the year Bridle & Bit began), there has never been a bigger impact made in this genre of television than with Yellowstone. You’re actually shaping how people perceive our Western culture on a global scale. You are the man responsible for defining and sharing that culture. How does that make you feel? A - Well, that was the goal. Look, I was alive when Urban Cowboy came out and when Dallas was a hit. I was a kid, but I remember it. We had been wearing Cowboy hats and boots always because I lived in Texas, but then they popped up everywhere! But Urban Cowboy, even the name denotes it, it had nothing to do with Cowboy’s. It’s about a guy that is going to ride a mechanical bull in a bar in Houston. Dallas was about a rich oil family. No one had ever made a story of Cowboys; you saw it just like I did. In 2010 I was with Tom Foran, he is a good friend of mine, and the horse market and everything else just collapsed, it felt like that era was ending. I wanted to do something to revive it. If you think about horses, it is really the only sport that you can do with your kids. You can drive them to soccer, you can watch them do motor-cross, you can take your daughter to Taylor & Jeff Bridges gymnastics, or dance or your kid to baseball, or whatever. But you can’t do it with them. This you can do with them! I think it is so important to have things that you can do with your family. I ride a lot of Cutting horses now, because my wife likes to show the Cutters. I said, “Ok, I’ll get a Cutter too.” My son loves to rope, so I said, “Ok, I’ll get a rope horse.” We do these things together! So, I wanted to do everything I could to show the real world and shift the wrong thinking about what a Cowboy really is to what the Western Lifestyle really is. To make it cool, not trendy, because it is cool! Nothing is cooler than going out at 4:30 in the morning and gathering 300 head of cattle. There is just nothing cooler!
Q - Just imagine a kid from a little town in Texas grows up to hit
it big in Hollywood and comes back to buy the Four-Sixes Ranch and you did it! Now it will be the landscape for a new series with Paramount, called the Four Sixes. Please share a little insight as to what that series will be about. A - It is very possible, yes. If I can figure out the story. It must benefit the Ranch and it has to benefit the audience. I have no idea what it will be about, look I had no idea what 1883 would be about until it came to me! The Network said, “We want you 48
to do another show.” I said, “OK. “They wanted to do a spin-off of Yellowstone, and I did not want to do a spin-off. I said, “Look, let me do the origins story. If we do the story of these folks going West, that is an interesting story! Let’s tell that story.” So, that is what we did. I told them that, and they bought it! Then they called and asked, “When are we getting the script?” I said, I don’t know, I haven’t figured it out yet. I can’t write it until I know what it is! Then one day it hit me. I was actually talking with Sam Elliott and the whole thing hit me. Then I met the actress that is playing one of the leads in it, and then the structure made sense to me. Then I wrote it and that is how it is with all of my scripts. Until I understand how the thing ends, and the reason I am telling the story, I cannot begin it.
Q - The Last
Cowboy Season 2 is on CMT starting November 12th. We are excited about that because it is part of what you said previously about keeping the lifestyle alive. How do you feel about that? A - It is a funny thing about that, I don’t even get paid for it really. It is such a labor of love, and it’s done exactly what I wanted it too! It has brought an excitement to the Horse Shows again. It has increased interest. Call any trainer, call anyone. I was speaking to Gary at the NRHA, call him and he is going to tell you how many more members they have now. We Taylor & Nicole Sheridan have more people just going to Horse Shows. Just showing up to watch. I believe it is the future, which is why I keep adding so much money to these events and getting media attention, is because the future of this is as a spectator sport. Watching The Run for A Million, and you were there too, there is not a more exciting hour of athletics on the planet!
Q -You fixed all the problems with the horse showsA - I made it for the audience! I did not make it for the riders. I gave
the riders an opportunity to win a whole lot of money, because that’s their job! They are professional riders. But I make the horse show for the people sitting in the stands. Because at the end of the day that is what I am, I am a showman, and I am putting on a show! I just did an aged event in Cutting, it was a Derby called the Brazos Bash. It is the highest paying 4, 5, 6 and 7 year old event of the year. It had the highest attendance it ever had. And, I treated it just like I treat The Run for A Million, it was a rock concert and people

SLIDERS’ NIGHT OUT
Presented by Toyon Ranch Celebrates 20 Years of the Reining Horse Foundation
The Reining Horse Foundation is set to once again host Sliders’ Night Out presented by Toyon Ranch, the premier night on the social and charitable calendar of the reining community, on December 1 at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City, Okla.
“Reiners are ready to gather and celebrate two decades of impact by the Reining Horse Foundation and to honor inductees into the National Reining Horse Association Hall of Fame and recipients of the NRHA Lifetime Achievement Award,” said Leslie Baker, executive director of the RHF. “We didn’t hold Sliders’ Night Out in 2020, so it feels like there is extra excitement this year, which is the third in this format.” “We have so many donors who have stepped up to make Sliders’ Night Out special,” said Rick Clark, chairperson of the RHF Board of Directors Development Committee and also NRHA President. “Toyon Ranch’s John and Nancy Tague are in their third year as presenting donors. We have several first-time Hall of Fame Table Hosts along with dozens of other committed partners who make this a night to remember. The event raises important funding to support the RHF mission, and I personally get excited that each year Sliders’ Night Out keeps reiners celebrating the history of our sport.” Inducted into the NRHA Hall of Fame will be the late Doug Carpenter and Jose Vazquez for the class of 2021 and the late Sally Brown and the late Jerry Kimmel for the class of 2020. The program also is set to recognize Charles Vaughan and Mike Carrier with the 2021 and 2020 NRHA Dale Wilkinson Lifetime Achievement Awards respectively. In 2021, Sliders’ Night Out will include a limited live auction. Sure to be popular is an embryo from the top-producing mare Wind Her Up Chic (Smart Chic Olena x Wind Her Up Doc), donated by RHF President Tim Anderson & Kim Niven. The 2003 bay mare has LTE of $100,000 and has produced foals earning $622,000. Bidders can also watch for a private rein-
ing clinic for up to eight people with NRHA Professional Mirjam Stillo at Rancho Los Vaqueros in Pilot Point, Texas. The day will include lunch and conclude with a reception, including food and beverage. The total package is made possible by Gary and Debbie Conway, Mirjam and Andrea Stillo, and Nancy and John Tague and must be scheduled in 2022. Additional auction items will be announced closer to the event. Since 2018, Sliders’ Night Out has been the single largest annual fundraiser for RHF, which serves as the charitable arm of the NRHA. Through major underwriters and Hall of Fame table hosts, dollars are raised in support of the RHF mission of caring for and honoring the reining community. Core programs include the Dale Wilkinson Memorial Crisis Fund, youth scholarships and leadership development through the National Reining Horse Youth Association, and perpetuation of the sport’s history through the NRHA Hall of Fame. Donors of every level are important. They come from individuals, corporations, ranches, training barns, foundations and groups of reiners joining forces to support the event. Early Platinum Donors are Tim & Kim Niven, Ian & Kristen Cantacuzene, Rick Clark, and Jamie Walters. James Turpen is a Gold Donor. To date, Silver Donors include Mark & Julie Blake, Booth Ranches, Mike & Bryan Hancock, Markel/Frank & Susan Costantini., Mike & Beth McFarlin, Rich & Cartmill Insurance, and the Williams Family Fund by Fidelity Charitable. Baker said additional donor commitments are anticipated and welcomed. These top-level donors plus many Hall of Fame Table Hosts make it possible for all NRHA Hall of Fame inductees to attend the event as honored guests. All Hall of Fame members are invited to be a part of the program again this year. Advance reservations are encouraged to ensure a chance to be in attendance at Sliders’ Night Out and enjoy the chef-prepared dinner and celebration. The benefit is held in conjunction with the NRHA Futurity & Adequan® North American Affiliate Championship Show. Individual tickets are available. To make reservations, contact Leslie Baker, RHF, (405) 9467400, ext. 106 or email rhf@nrha.com.

Brian Bell Surpasses $2 Million in NRHA Earnings
With more than $8,000 in earnings at the All-American Quarter Horse Congress, National Reining Horse Association Professional Brian Bell has unofficially surpassed the two million dollars in NRHA lifetime earnings. Bell, of Pilot Point, Texas, first became an NRHA Million Dollar Rider in 2013 following the NRHA Futurity, where he qualified two horses back to the Level 4 Open finals. “I first got started around the time Bill Horn became NRHA’s first Million Dollar Rider, and that made me want to have that 58
success, too,” Bell shared. “The first million was the hardest. I’ve learned so much since then and can do a better job now.” That knowledge made it possible for Bell to earn his second million in less than eight years. In 2020, he won his biggest check to date when he piloted Gunnabebigtime (Gunnatrashya x Big Time Jazzy) to the NRHA Futurity Open Level 4 Reserve Championship for $113,033. With Turn Down For What
(Einsteins Revolution x My Way Marla), Bell finished fourth at the 2015 NRHA Futurity. The pair then finished as the National Reining Breeders Classic Level 4 Open Reserve Champions in 2017. Recent performances with standout athletes including Mr Royal Hollywood, Cee Mr Stop, Mr Hollywood Cee, Mr Boaz, and Ruf Steppin have all helped propel Bell’s lifetime earnings upwards. “Most of the credit has to go to

the good horses I’ve gotten to ride; the ones that want to do the job for you,” he said. “I also thank the owners who have had faith in me and have given me nice horses to ride.” Bell started his reining career at 18 years old. He moved into the professional ranks in 1995 and quickly made his mark there as well winning several major event titles. He has successfully competed at the highest levels of reining competition, including USET Reining Championship finals, the NRHA Futurity, NRHA Derby, NRBC, All American Quarter Horse Congress and AQHA World Show.

WHY IS THOMAS TULL IN THE HORSE BUSINESS?
Why is Thomas Tull spending millions on horses, a small fortune on trainers, and buying events like the American Rodeo? Even the wealthiest in the stable are stunned to see they are no match at sponsorship of events, or at the auction if Thomas Tull wants that horse. The whole scene is interesting to watch as those that for so long have used their millionaire fortunes and power to compete, with an advantage, now find themselves competing with billionaire funding, and a fella with a plan. What is Mr. Tull’s end game? It is pure speculation to guess that the most logical outcome is an initial public offering for the conglomerate he creates in the horse world. The organization is expected to include divisions for: apparel, horse breeding and showing, special events, media, and significant real estate holdings all of which are rolled into one large holding company to take public, many years from now. The Thomas Tull story is one of the American dream.
Raised in a small community in upstate New York, Tull and his two young sisters watched as their single mom worked two jobs. Recognizing the need, he jumped into work to help pay the bills from mowing lawns to shoveling snow. Besides excelling in sports, his intellectual curiosity, and interest in science served him well at school. He had an urge to turn his dreams into something he did. And, at an early age decided he wanted to work for himself. Right out of school, in the early 90’s while living in an economically challenged area he spotted that a local repair shop was going out of business. Unable to even change the oil, or repair a car himself, he eyed it as a possible business he could run. He discovered most of the tools and equipment were about to be repossessed. So, he found out who held the notes and approached them with the premise that they could auction the stuff for pennies on the dollar or, keep it all together and let him try and make a go of it and they did. In almost every case, the repair shop, laundromat, tax centers, and movies he has entered businesses he knew little or nothing about. Instead, he understood people, their behavior, their needs and wants and recognized how those enterprises could better serve their customers
Tull plays base guitar in the Ghost Hounds. They have a sound that harks back to the fundamentals of rock ’n’ roll, and blues as a storytelling medium.
Opening act for the Rolling Stones, ZZ Top, and Bob Segar.

Thomas Tull likes simple propositions. He is a self-made billionaire, (3.4), executing a proven business model that deploys technology solutions to problems he encounters in businesses. He is the founder, and Chief Executive Officer of the private holding company Tulco LLC. Tulco focuses on streamlining bulky, old-fashioned industries through technology. Their aim is to transform industries using the power of data science and artificial intelligence. They search for industries with static business models that afford them the opportunity to take part ownership in companies that can scale into a larger Thomas and Alba Tull form utilizing their skill sets and proprietary technologies. NOVEMBER 2021
Thomas and his wife Alba extended their wealth into The Tull Family Foundation which empowers people and communities to innovate and thrive. The foundation creates opportunity for change and transforms lives in under-funded communities. It achieves these goals thru focus on education, conservation, and medical and scientific research.

RODEO FANS TO ENJOY A VARIETY OF ON-SITE ENTERTAINMENT PRIOR TO AND FOLLOWING THE NFR PERFORMANCES
When rodeo fans arrive at the Thomas & Mack Center for the return of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo they will have multiple entertainment options to enjoy prior to and following each rodeo performance. Known as the richest and most prestigious rodeo in the world, the Wrangler NFR runs from Thursday, Dec. 2 through Saturday, Dec. 11. For ease of travel, rodeo fans have the option of utilizing the complimentary NFR Express Shuttle Bus service from 23 sponsor hotel properties and The Cowboy Channel Cowboy Christmas. Upon arrival, fans will be greeted with rodeo-themed areas extending both outside the arena and within the confines of the building. On the outer grounds of the Thomas & Mack Center, the ProRodeo Zone will greet fans with PRCA sponsor-activation tents and live music. As fans move toward the entrance, they will pass through the Fan Zone, an area that includes additional sponsor tents, the official ProRodeo and Wrangler NFR merchandise trailer, food and beverage options, video screens and tables for attendees to congregate. Further enhancing the fan experience, two outdoor video boards on the face of the arena will broadcast Wrangler NFR moments, highlight videos, interactive content and contestant interviews. When rodeo fans enter the building, one of the arena’s highlights is the 36,000-square-foot hospitality area at the northwest 74
end of the arena. Rebranded and re-energized for 2021, the area is now called Aces High – Saloon & Exhibit. The area will feature a saloon and a 2,500-square-foot, glass-enclosed balcony with Strip views. The Cowboy Channel will host Western Sports Roundup at 4 p.m., the NFR Pre-Show starting at 5 p.m. and the NFR PostShow immediately following the end of the performance each night. An additional highlight will be an all-encompassing exhibit detailing the 35-year history of the NFR in Las Vegas. Access to Aces High – Saloon & Exhibit is available to all fans with a Wrangler NFR ticket for that evening’s performance and also will feature the live broadcast of the rodeo each night, including a large-screen projection. Meanwhile, on the arena’s southeast side opposite Aces High, fans can enjoy all the activities and amenities of the returning Cowboy Corral, which takes over the adjacent Cox Pavilion with live music, a huge bar and plenty of space to sit and relax or kick up your heels. The live entertainment will include The Brit Stokes Band and additional talent from Cowboy Revival each night prior to the Wrangler NFR starting at 4:30 p.m. Following the NFR, the Cowboy Corral will stay jumping with The Brit Stokes Band returning to the stage. Sitting right outside of Cowboy Corral is the Bull & Barrel Saloon, featuring its own bar and food service and the Hall of Champions with tributes to former NFR champions.

AQHA and the OKC Fairgrounds Extend Long-term Partnership
The American Quarter Horse Association and the OKC Fairgrounds have agreed to a 10-year contract covering 2022-2031 to host the AQHYA World Championship Show, presented by Ford; Farnam AQHA World Championship Show; and AQHA Select World Championship Show, presented by Adequan® (polysulfated glycosaminoglycan). Oklahoma City has hosted the AQHA World Championship Show since 1976, AQHYA World Championship Show since 2008 and AQHA Select World Championship Show since 2020. The OKC Fairgrounds has also showcased AQHA’s Battle In the Saddle and AQHA Central Level 1 Championships over the years. “We are excited to continue our partnership with the OKC Fairgrounds,” said Chad Pierce, AQHA interim executive vice president. “Our partnership spans more than 40 years, and during that time, we have built a strong relationship with Oklahoma City officials and the OKC Fairgrounds staff. Oklahoma State Fair Inc. President & CEO Timothy O’Toole; Vice President, OKC Fairgrounds Events & Operation Bill Allen; and their staff understand the importance of providing an exceptional facility to host our prestigious events each year. Their team works hard to accommodate the needs of our members and their American Quarter Horses. Exhibitors take great pride in entering the Gateway of Champions
to compete for top honors and a coveted AQHA gold globe.” Over the next few years, the OKC Fairgrounds is implementing several facility improvements, including a new coliseum, which will enhance the experience AQHA provides to its members during these world-class events. Since 2005, more than $120 million has been invested in the equine facilities at the OKC Fairgrounds, and they continue to look at ways to enhance the horse show experience for both exhibitors and spectators, alike. “The partnership we have enjoyed with AQHA over the past 40+ years has been extremely beneficial for all concerned,” said O’Toole. “Their Association has been actively involved with the planning and development process for the equine renovations at the OKC Fairgrounds. The City of Oklahoma City, the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber, the Oklahoma City Convention and Visitors Bureau, and our organization deeply value our long-term partnership with AQHA.” About AQHA
Founded in 1940, the American Quarter Horse Association is the largest equine breed registry in the world. With headquarters in Amarillo, Texas, AQHA has a membership of more than 226,000 people worldwide. The OKC Fairgrounds is a 435-acre “21st Century Tourism Destination” that is owned by the City of Oklahoma City and managed through a longterm management agreement by Oklahoma State Fair Inc. The OKC Fairgrounds is home to the annual Oklahoma State Fair, held each September. Learn more at www.okcfairgrounds.com.

Teton Ridge and PBR plan ultimate western sports weekend in Arlington Texas next March
Fort Worth Business News Staff October 28, 2021
In a landmark partnership between Teton Ridge and Professional Bull Riders, the two iconic Western lifestyle brands have announced a reunion between The American, the richest single-day rodeo in the world, and the premier bull riding league. In 2022, the two leading properties will again team up to host the ultimate weekend in Western sports by bringing The American and the 2022 PBR Global Cup USA to Arlington and AT&T Stadium on March 5-6. The American and PBR last united for a historic weekend of Western sports at AT&T Stadium in 2018. Throughout the weekend, PBR set a record for the highest-attended, single-day event in its league history, hosting more than 46,000 fans inside AT&T Stadium, a news release said. The partnership with Professional Bull Riders follows Teton Ridge’s recent move to bring The American under the brand’s umbrella and elevate it to new levels in March 2022, including an unmatched total purse of more than $3 million, non-stop rodeo action, live music, entertainment and more. “In just nine short years since its inception, The American payout earnings rival that of the Kentucky Derby,” said Teton Ridge Vice Chairman Randy Bernard. “This revolutionizing event is the first rodeo in the world that gives the underdog the opportunity to win more money in just one day than they could accumulate in a lifetime rodeoing. Reuniting with PBR
will extend this already engaging iconic experience for fans into a great weekend showcasing athleticism and talent in western sports.” “PBR is committed to transforming the western sports industry, and by partnering with Teton Ridge to reunite with The American, we will continue providing more competitive and high-earning opportunities for the industry’s hard-working athletes, and further reach new audiences by bringing them the cowboy culture in never-before-seen ways,” said Sean Gleason, CEO and Commissioner, PBR. “After the PBR Global Cup spotlights bull riding’s top riders from around the globe, rallying competitors and fans in the name of national pride, The American will culminate the high-adrenaline weekend by awarding life-changing prize money to dozens of cowboys and cowgirls. We envision bringing fans a weekend of western sports like never before.” Over the course of qualifier events across the country, competitors for The American will be vying for what could be the biggest single-day paycheck of their careers. Founded in 2014 and hosted annually at the home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, The American is a true open competition in format. The high-profile event brings together top professional rodeo athletes and honest, hardworking cowboys and cowgirls in a winner-take-all showdown to crown the world’s finest champions, the news release said. The American features competitors in all eight rodeo disciplines: barrel racing, breakaway roping, steer wrestling, team roping (heading and heeling), tie down roping, bare-
back riding, saddle bronc riding and bull riding. Each qualifier who makes it to the 2022 finals will be eligible for their discipline’s $100,000 prize money and will also have their shot at the bonus millions. Teton Ridge also recently announced that for the first time in the event’s history, women’s breakaway ropers will also be eligible for the $2 million added bonus. Regarded as the “Olympics of bull riding,” the 2022 PBR Global Cup USA will feature five nations and six teams battling it out for national pride and the title of “Toughest Nation on Dirt.” Teams from Australia, Brazil, Canada and Mexico will attempt to upset host nation Team USA, which will be represented by Team Eagles and all Native American Team Wolves. The PBR Global Cup, first held in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, in 2017, debuted in the United States in Texas at AT&T Stadium in 2019. Team USA made history at the most recent iteration of the event in 2020, becoming the first nation to win the international team event on home soil. PBR has a decade-long history of events at AT&T Stadium, welcoming the Iron Cowboy Major from 2010-2018, before hosting the PBR Global Cup in 2019 and 2020, and the first-ever PBR World Finals held outside of Las Vegas in 2020. Tickets for The American and 2022 PBR Global Cup USA go on sale Friday, Nov. 5 at 10 a.m. CDT. They can be purchased at the AT&T Stadium Box Office, online at https://attstadium. com/ or https://seatgeek.com/ or via phone to PBR Customer Service at (800) 732-1727.
6666 Ranch Increases Support of the National Reined Cow Horse Association in Multi-Year Agreement Longtime National Reined Cow Horse Association supporter and stallion sponsor 6666 Ranch bolstered their commitment to the reined cow horse industry in a multi-year agreement that names the famed Texas ranch as a Corporate Partner of the ever-growing association. The working cattle ranch that also houses many of the cow horse industry’s leading sires elevated their status with the association on the heels of renewed involvement in the working ranch cowboy membership drive.
“We were thrilled to host the 2021 Cowboy Clinic at the historic 6666 Ranch in June,” said Anna Morrison, NRCHA executive director. “While there, we had the opportunity to see first-hand the leading role that Dr. Blodgett and the 6666 Ranch family take in connecting working ranch cowboys to the traditional horsemanship and competitive sport of reined cow horse.” The partnership between the 6666 Ranch and the NRCHA is now new, but rather has deep roots. The ranch stands NRCHA Million
Dollar Sires Bet Hesa Cat (by High Brow Cat) and WR This Cats Smart (by High Brow Cat). The ranch is also breeder of competitive reined cow horse stallion Quahadi (by Bet Hesa Cat), owned by Burnett Ranches LLC and shown by NRCHA Million Dollar Rider Boyd Rice to more than $55,000 in earnings, who will be featured in the upcoming invitational fence challenge at The Run For A Million in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ranch-bred, raised and trained horses have successfully competed in the NRCHA, and of late, Saddling At Sunrise (by WR This Cats Smart and out of ranch-bred mare Sunshine Ingredient) has carried Rice to the Open Novice Horse Champion title at the 2021 Tres Osos Cow Horse Derby and NRCHA Million Dollar Rider Kelby Phillips to the 2021 NRCHA Stallion Stakes Reserve Championship. Resident trainer and NRCHA professional Terry Riddle has shown ranch-owned stallion South Wichita (by Bet Hesa Cat and out of ranch-bred Gins Last) to third in the 2018 Limited Open and sixth in the Intermediate Open at the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity®.

Bradish and Weber Repeat Their Wins at the 2021 USEF Advanced Single Horse and Four-In-Hand National Championships
by Leslie Potter/US Equestrian Communications Department
Two of last year’s combined driving national champions successfully defended their titles this week at the Garden State Combined Driving Event. Taylor Bradish (Windsor, S.C.) secured the 2021 USEF Advanced Single Horse National Championship, and Chester Weber (Ocala, Fla.) took home his 18th USEF Advanced Four-in-Hand National Championship. Bradish drove Katydid Duchess, a 2009 Welsh Pony cross mare owned by Jennifer Matheson. After posting the second-best score in the dressage phase, Bradish and Duchess showcased their skill in the marathon, finishing with the top score in that phase on Saturday. A solid cones round on Sunday gave them a final score of 142.47 and a second USEF National Championship in the division. Bradish came into the weekend with a recent ankle injury, which she says made her question whether she’d be able to compete at all. But she credits a fit and ready horse with her successful outing, despite the challenges. “She was awesome all weekend,” said Bradish. “I was happy with some of the [marathon] obstacles, not with all of them—I made some mistakes. It’s a difficult course for us because we don’t have hills in South Carolina where we’re from, so being here in hilly New Jersey was a little bit difficult, but she handled it. She’s super fit which is great. I was quite happy with the cones. It was slippery with all the rain, and I slid into two balls, but I was very close to making the time. It was definitely a nail-biter!” Bradish is aiming toward qualifying for and competing in the FEI 92
World Championship next year in France with Duchess and returning to the National Championship in 2022 to keep the streak going. “It feels really good [to defend the title],” Bradish adds. “I’m very pleased with the horse; she just keeps getting better and better. I feel like, even from last year, I would have beat myself this year. She just keeps getting better and better every show.” Chester Weber Weber has been the dominant force in the four-in-hand in the U.S. for years, and he kept his legacy going this weekend. With his team of KWPN geldings Amadeus, First Edition, Ideaal, Julius V, along with Reno, a gelding of unknown breeding, Weber started the weekend strong with an impressive 37.67 score in the dressage phase. He held his lead through the marathon, and although he was bested by eventual reserve champion, James Fairclough, in the cones phase, Weber’s final score of 145.47 was good enough to maintain the overall lead and take home the championship. Weber stayed close to home over the past year, focused on working with younger and newer horses to his program with this championship serving as his goal event for the season. When asked how it feels to win an 18th National Championship, he said, “It feels a little better than the 17th one! “One of our big goals for the program is national titles, so we prioritize that every year and yet again, we were able to get this done,” he added. “Driving has deep roots in New Jersey. It’s where I was introduced to combined driving and it’s nice to be back in the Garden State and competing there. Jimmy and I had some good sport and both of us tried our best.” Looking ahead, Weber is aiming for a successful outing at the Live Oak International at his home base in Ocala, Fla., next March. After that, he hopes to compete for the 2022 FEI Four-In-Hand World Championship in Italy.

The Backstory…
“When you lose a child, you lose yourself.”
THE SOUL OF A MAN may or may not be his story; it is, however, his soul. In an eight-part docudrama in print, Jim attempts to redeem himself with the God of his youth. As he reunites with him, together they weave an entertaining, thought-provoking, intriguing, and heart-wrenching tale filled with emotion, pain, love, hate, anger, guilt, and regret. Challenging both fact and fiction, each battling for supremacy. All with one goal in mind: to help all those less fortunate children of the world, not only to survive but to thrive in the world God has chosen to place them. Jim hopes to accomplish this goal by using the proceeds from this docudrama to provide the means and guidance to these children’s caregivers and heartbroken parents. Praying that they may find peace and happiness in their own lives while willingly accepting the task that God has assigned to them. Ever hopeful that the journey helps him find some semblance of peace in his own restless soul. Wanting to believe that maybe, just maybe . . .

Slade Wood has been named the Resistol Rookie of the Year in the All-Around and Steer Roping. He finished the 2021 ProRodeo regular season with $54,430, which was good enough for fourth in the steer roping PRCA | RAM World Standings. He is set to compete in the National Finals Steer Roping in Mulvane, Kan., Nov. 12-13.
RESISTOL ROOKIE
ALL-AROUND COWBOY & STEER ROPER: SLADE WOOD
Resistol Rookie of the Year & Resistol Rookie All-Around and Steer Roper of the Year Name: Slade Wood Hometown: New Ulm, Texas
Biggest moment of the 2021 season? Slade: Taking second place at the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo was probably the biggest and best moment of this season for me. When did you realize you could win Rookie of the Year? Slade: Coming into the year I had planned on just steer roping and not entering any other events. Then I started having success in the steer roping and things took off for me in my rookie year. I decided to try team roping, I won a little money there, and it secured the all-around for me as well.
RESISTOL ROOKIE BAREBACK RIDER OF THE YEAR: COLE FRANKS Cole Franks set big goals for himself during his rookie season, but he never imagined he’d accomplish all that he did in 2021. Franks was not only named the Resistol Rookie of the Year in the bareback riding, but he qualified for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Dec 2-11. He will head into the NFR 12th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $77,393. Resistol Rookie Bareback Rider of the Year Name: Cole Franks Hometown: Clarendon, Texas Biggest moment of the 2021 season? Cole: I think my win in Dodge City, (Kan.) was the best moment for me. I came out and won the rodeo and also set the arena record. When did you realize you could win Rookie of the Year? Cole: When I first bought my PRCA card I knew I could do it. I think winning the long round at San Angelo, (Texas) is what really started it all. That win put me in the No.1 spot and everything went well after that.

LANE FROST
DOCUMENTARY RELEASES OFFICIAL TRAILER
Late legendary bull rider and ProRodeo Hall of Famer Lane Frost is the subject of a new documentary by Fort Worth based production company Tough Draw. The feature length film LANE: Life | Legend | Legacy will focus on Frost’s faith, various challenges the young cowboy faced and most importantly, why 32 years after his death in Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days, he is still one of the most celebrated figures in Western culture. Tough Draw founders, Brad Hughes and James Trawick, along with producers Chris Juen and Chad Gundersen of the acclaimed series The Chosen and Out of Order Studios began production on the documentary in March 2020 and secured interviews with Lane’s parents Clyde and Elsie Frost as well as some of the most iconic names in bull riding and the rodeo community including Tuff Hedeman, ProRodeo Hall of Fame bull rider and Lane’s best friend, Don Gay, iconic champion bull rider and rodeo legend and country music star Cody Johnson.
JOSH FROST NAMED 2021 LINDERMAN AWARD WINNER The PRCA Linderman Award is one of the most prestigious awards in ProRodeo. It recognizes a cowboy who won at least $1,000 in three events, and those events must include at least one roughstock and one timed event.
The 2021 Linderman Award winner is Randlett, Utah, cowboy Josh Frost. This past season Frost earned $130,192 in bull riding, $4,110 in tie-down roping, and another $1,070 in the steer wrestling. He said it’s an award he holds near and dear to his heart. “It means a lot to me, I think it’s the most cowboy award we have in the sport of ProRodeo,” said Frost, a two-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier. “You have to complete on both ends of the arena in roughstock and timed events, so it’s an award that is hard to qualify for and especially hard to win.” Frost now has won back-to-back Linderman awards. His first came in 2019, then the honor was not awarded in 2020. He said it’s an award he shoots for every season, but it was more difficult than ever in 2021. “Every year I set out with the goal of being in the running for the Linderman Award,” Frost said. “This year was a little different, I had a big goal of trying to be the PRCA World Champion Bull Rider this year. I went to as many rodeos as anybody, so I was on the road a lot and didn’t get to do as much as I wanted to do in the other events. “The plan was to get qualified for the Linderman those first two weeks of June. The tie-down roping went well, I won one check in the steer wrestling, but I was $300 short. But in August I entered a couple of the steer wrestling events and I finally ended up pulling my last check and getting qualified.” Frost is the second member of his family to capture the distinguished Linderman Award, his older brother, Joe, 27, captured the award in 2014. Kyle Whitaker holds the PRCA record for most Linderman Awards won with 10 in his ProRodeo career. 98

The Top 15 breakaway ropers will compete for prize money of $200,000 during the twoday, 10-round performance that will be produced by the PRCA in conjunction with Group W Productions. “The continued success and growth of breakaway rop-

The ladies of the WPRA have worked hard this year and traveled many miles to make their dreams come true in Las Vegas as they compete for a world title alongside the National Finals Rodeo.” The performances will be at 1 p.m. (PST) each day, with five rounds Dec. 6 and five rounds Dec. 7. Tickets go on sale Friday, Oct. 22 at 10 a.m. (PT). Ticket information may be found at https://am.ticketmaster.com/ boydgaming/wrangler-nfbr. The 2020 National Finals Breakaway Roping took place at Globe Life Field in Arlington in conjunction with the NFR. “Dr Katz spent over a half hour on the phone with me. When is the last time anyone has heard of a doctor doing that. He is one cool dude.” - Steve N. “My wife, Debbie and I, work with Dr Steven Katz. He is the most compassionate and caring doctor I have ever had the privilege of working with. When I first called the practice to speak with someone about medical issues with our family, Dr Katz spent over a half hour on the phone with me. When is the last time anyone has heard of a doctor doing that. He is one cool dude. The entire staff and doctors at NPG are a cut above any other physicians I have come across. We really appreciate the quality of care they all provide.” - Steve N.

“Considering seeing a Naturopathy Dr? I wasn't sure what to expect either. From the staff to the Doctors, my experience over the last 5 years has been nothing but exceptional. I have foot drop and HAD chronic backpain. I no longer medicate with drugs thanks to this practice of fine individuals. I am able to hike miles and miles and enjoy intense Mountain biking. Thank you, Dr. Steven Katz.” - Scott S.
“I had an extended recovery period after an emergency surgery and I was unable to ride. In April 2019 I went on a trail ride with my family and strained my hip flexor. In search of options, I started physical therapy which only brought limited relief. In Feb. I started prolotherapy and spinal manipulation with Dr. Cronin, and now am pain free and am back to riding! My husband has just started prolotherapy and chiropractic adjustments and is quite pleased after just one treatment! Our daughter is also receiving spinal manipulation from Dr. Cronin. We are so appreciative of what Dr. Cronin brings for health and pain relief as an alternative to traditional medical treatments!” Thank you, Melinda Carter

U.S. Jumping Teams Finishes FEI Jumping Nations Cup™ Youth Final with Strong Performances and Gold Medal for U.S.
The U.S. Jumping Team fielded two teams at the FEI Jumping Nations Cup™ Youth Final in Kronenberg, the Netherlands, with both junior and young rider athletes experiencing international team competition in a championship atmosphere. The U.S. Junior Jumping Team took top honors, earning team gold in the FEI Jumping Nations Cup CSIOJ competition, while the U.S. Young Rider Jumping Team took sixth in the FEI Jumping Nations Cup CSIOY competition. Both teams were led by Chef d’Equipe Anne Kursinski.
Competition began with a qualification round on Wednesday, September 22, for both teams, with the junior team jumping at 1.40m height and the young riders contesting a 1.45m track. The U.S. Junior Jumping Team qualified for the second and final round of competition in third place in CSIOJ team competition, with strong performances from Viriginia Bonnie (Upperville, Va.) and Efodea, an 11-year-old KWPN mare owned by Nina Bonnie, Ansgar Holtgers Jr. (Wellington, Fla.) and Elina, and a 12-year-old KPWN mare owned by Gut Einhaus, LLC, Caroline Mawhinney (Woodside, Calif.) and Stella Levista, her own 13-year-old Hanoverian mare, and Zayna Rizvi (Wellington, Fla.) and Excellent, an 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Peacock Ridge LLC. The team finished on a total score of four but would begin with a clean slate of zero for the second round of competition on Saturday. The U.S. Young Rider Team also qualified for the second round of competition in the CSIOY, finishing in sixth place after the first day. The team of Tali Dejong (Golden, Colo.) and Heavenly Star, her nine-year-old KWPN mare, Riley Delbecq (Duck Key, Fla.) and Julesraimus de Barisy, her own 12-year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding, Mimi Gochman (New York, N.Y.) and Celina BH, an 11-year-old Holsteiner mare owned by Gochman Sport Horses, and Caelinn Leahy (Maple Park, Ill.) and Cold Play 31, a 12-year-old Westphalian gelding owned by Steven Schaefer, each had highlights in their rounds. The U.S. Junior Jumping Team returned for the second round on Saturday, September 25, in firing fashion, with Mawhinney and Bonnie both securing clear rounds for the team and Holtgers Jr. and Rizvi only adding four faults to their individual scores. Dropping one of the four-fault tallies, the team finished the competition on final team score of four, securing a first-place finish. Spain took second place with a total score of five, with Belgium earning the bronze, also with a total score of five. Of their podium success, 110
Kursinski commented noted that the team’s performance and learning from the experience will be beneficial for the continued development of the program pipeline. “The Juniors were extremely motivated and focused. It was really a great experience for them. We qualified in the top sixth and on Saturday, they all came back and were very strong. It was great to watch,” said Kursinski. “They rode well, the horses jumped well, and the best thing is truly experiencing the team experience. At home it’s always individual, but to represent the United States internationally, you really feel it. There were 12 international teams and for them to be out there representing their country and feeling proud of their accomplishments reinforces the model that we’ve seen work for our program. For the future success, it’s about getting them started earlier and into this international environment.” The U.S. Young Rider Jumping Team returned on Saturday looking to improve on their performance from Wednesday. The team finished on a final score of nine, for sixth place in the CSIOY team competition, and saw Gochman ride to fault-free rounds across both team competition classes. Dejong and Heavenly Star finished on a total score of four, while Delbecq and Julesraimus de Barisy added a single rail and one time fault to their second-round total. Leahy and Coldplay 31 had three down for 12 faults and were the drop score for the team. Germany finished in first place on zero faults, with France taking second on four. Sweden earned the bronze with eight faults to round out the top three placings. “Overall, this team was great, and we just missed the podium by a time fault. It was a tremendous experience for all of them, especially to learn how to deal with their nerves – and there will continue to be learnings from it,” added Kursinski. “Across the board, they’re all taking home an understanding of what they must work on and continue to improve. It’s a wonderful experience and the competition was very strong, and that’s a part of why we invest in bringing future talent to these competitions and why it’s so important for them to experience the successes during the week too.” Gochman and Celina BH delivered all clear rounds throughout their week of competition and captured top honors in the Ashford Farm Grand Prix CSIOY in impressive fashion, crossing through the jump-off timers in 42.08 seconds for the win, nearly two seconds faster than the second-place finisher. Holtgers Jr. and Conblue, a 11-year-old Oldenburg Springpferd gelding, took second place in the Emmers Equestrian Park Grand Prix CSIOJ, with the pair finishing in 42.65 seconds, just narrowly behind Aurelia Guisson and No Limit vh Legita Hof Z of Belgium who took the win. Rizvi and Excellent, rounded out the top five in the class, adding four faults in their jump-off round and finishing with a time of 42.67 seconds.

NRHA Ceases Negotiations with FEI
The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) and the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) collaborated for more than 20 years to showcase and expand the sport of reining worldwide while creating historic memories valued by many.
Unfortunately, countless impediments throughout the relationship – legal, cultural, structural, and financial in nature – presented numerous hurdles over that time, and include recent FEI actions. Therefore, the NRHA leadership made the decision not to move forward with a new FEI agreement. Although it was announced that FEI had terminated the original agreement in 2020, a new Memorandum of Understanding
between the two organizations was approved by the FEI Board of Directors in June 2021. The NRHA Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and Task Force members were comfortable with that agreement, which would have created a framework for a limited group of international championships. Then, an entirely different agreement was drafted and submitted to NRHA on September 15, 2021. “We are unsure of what led up to this development, and why NRHA was not consulted,” noted NRHA President Rick Clark. “At this time, the Executive Committee, with the support of the NRHA Board of Directors, has made the decision to not move forward with a new agreement with FEI.”
NRHA Commissioner Gary Carpenter expanded on Clark’s statement. “NRHA has worked diligently over the past two years to collaboratively negotiate a new agreement and made it a top priority for the association. Through our Executive Committee, Board, FEI Task Force, and staff, we remained fully committed to working closely with the FEI, and were excited for what the future held,” he said. “Unfortunately, a lack of direct and clear communication from FEI has been one of the biggest hurdles. We have constantly seen the goal post move further out of reach, to the point where a relationship is no longer feasible or beneficial to our members.” Both Clark and Carpenter noted there is no ill will towards the FEI, its leadership, staff, and members. “We are thankful for everything the FEI has done for reining and the reining horse over the years, and proud that reining was able to contribute excitement in the form of an alternative discipline in the FEI World Equestrian Games™. We hope that in the future we may be able to work together in some capacity,” Clark shared.
APHA joins forces with National Ranch and Stock Horse Alliance
We are excited to announce a new partnership with the National Ranch and Stock Horse Alliance (NRSHA). With the popularity of ranch horse events continuing to grow, the alliance will be a winwin for both organizations. APHA has offered ranch horse classes for several years and is a natural fit to join forces with NRSHA. As a partner in NRSHA, APHA members will have the opportunity to qualify for the NRSHA National Championship Show by competing at APHA-approved shows that offer all of the four core ranch classes: ranch trail, ranch reining, ranch cow work and ranch riding or ranch pleasure.
“Because Paint Horses are so important to the ranching community, I am incredibly excited for APHA to be a part of a great group of associations dedicated to the ranch horse,” said APHA Senior Director of Judges Dave Dellin. “APHA looks forward to the continued support and expansion of our ranch competitions.” Qualifying for the 2022 NRSHA National Championship Show is underway. To earn an invitation, riders must compete at three NRSHA-partner events between March 1, 2021, and February 28, 2022. Any APHAapproved event offering the four core ranch classes during the qualifying period counts toward NRSHA qualification. For more details about qualifying requirements for the NRSHA National Championship Show please visit https://ranchhorse.net/national_show.asp. “Ranch horse events are one of the fastest growing aspects of the equine industry,” said NRSHA President Charles Pellham. “We are pleased APHA is joining forces with the Alliance and look forward to APHA members competing at the NRSHA National Championship Show.” 112

(Credit: SherryCervi.com)| The Teton Ridge Foundation, the philanthropic wing of the emerging brand, Teton Ridge, is perpetuating the legacy of western performance sports by supporting youth barrel racers and encouraging their involvement with Sherry Cervi Youth Championships. Visionary entrepreneur Thomas Tull formed Teton Ridge to promote and preserve America’s iconic western culture and heritage by investing in western performance sports, athletes, events, breeding and land conservation. The foundation’s commitment to the Sherry Cervi Youth Championships will not only support the organization’s goal to increase participation in the sport of barrel racing but provide scholarships for higher education. Sherry Cervi Youth Championships was founded in 2008 by legendary barrel racer Sherry Cervi. The Championships consist of three races throughout Arizona, Minnesota and California. “I started the Sherry Cervi Youth Championships to support the next generation of future champions and to give back to the industry that has given me so much,” said Cervi. “The Teton Ridge Foundation shares the same passion for our youth and the western lifestyle. I am honored and very grateful for their generosity and support of both the races and the scholarship program.” Sherry Cervi Youth Championships offers education scholarships to graduating high school seniors. The awardee amounts range from $500 to $5,000 and may be used at the college, university, or trade school of the student’s choice. “We are grateful to be able to transform the lives of young barrel racers by helping Sherry Cervi Youth Championships provide youth a pathway to pursue higher education, participate in a western sport and experience competition,” said John Sanislow, operations manager of Teton Ridge. “Sherry is a role model and mentor for western athletes of all ages.” Teton Ridge operates a philanthropic foundation that provides invaluable funding for land stewardship, fosters community by preserving the American West’s cultural heritage, and ensures the future of ranching and riding sports. tion and the Texas Paint Horse Breeders Association. Exhibitors, including Open riders and non-pros, had the opportunity to show in a multitude of reining classes at this year’s show. The 3-Year-Old Reining Challenge (NRHA Levels 1 – 4) had $2,000 added for the Open as well as an additional $2,000 for the nonpro exhibitors while the 4, 5, 6, & 7-Year-Old Reining Challenge (NRHA Levels 1 – 4) had $25,500 added for the Open as well as an additional $25,500 added for the non-pro exhibitors. Each class also offered a $1,000 added Texas-Bred Incentive which paid the top three placing horses foaled in Texas. The 2021 APHA World Championship Show also featured NRHA All-Breed classes, giving exhibitors the opportunity to show other horses that may not be registered APHA. These classes flourished with additional money added or jackpot money included. The purses in these classes ranged from $500 to $2,000-added which ultimately allowed Open, nonpros, limited, Youth and rookie riders to all walk away with winning money. Exhibitor Raeanna Thayn from Tioga, Texas, had a rewarding World Show where she and her horse RosesWhiz walked away with $10,000 in earnings. “I am so proud of my mare,” said Raeanna. “This was my first time showing in the derby at the Paint World Show outside of the world title classes. I was super excited to see how much added money there was! It is a great incentive for reiners to bring their higher level derby horses to the show and to grow reining in APHA. The quality of horses and the amount of people in the derby was super impressive this year.” 1

This year, my goal was to do a CCI2*-L with him, so Virginia seemed like a really good one because I love the terrain and I think it is a good baseline fitness place to introduce them to the level.” Martin returned home on Monday from the FEI WBFSH Eventing World Breeding Championship for Young Horses in France, but quickly became reacquainted with her mounts leading into the national championship. She said that it showed the quality of her horses and her team.

2021 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity
®
Champion is Zak 34 and Justin Wright
Courtesy of National Reined Cow Horse Association
The 2021 National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity® Finals on Saturday, October 23, at the Will Rogers Coliseum in Fort Worth, Texas,
might go down as the loudest and the most intense in many years. A clear front runner didn’t emerge until the last set of cow work. When Darren Moore called out an incredible judge’s score of 226 for Zak 34 and NRCHA Million Dollar
Rider Justin Wright’s fence run, it was clear who was adding Open Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion to his résumé. “I’ve had dreams of this for as long as I can remember. It’s consumed my life to win the Snaffle Bit Futurity,” said Wright of Santa Maria, California. “It’s emotional, but it’s just it’s everything I’ve ever dreamed of.” Wright has been close before, taking the Open Reserve Champion title in 2018 aboard Scooter Kat. This year he had three Open Futurity Finalists in the field of 30 horses. The cream of that crop was “Zak.” From that moment, Wright says that the journey to bring Zak to the Futurity had a different feeling than his past attempts.“It was a perfect storm,” Wright said as he reflected on the Finals. He and Zak rode to a 670 (H:221/ R:223/C:226) on their way to the title and $125,000. With Melissa’s son Seth’s memory tied to the horse, the emotion of accomplishing his lifelong goal, and the exhaustion of completing the marathon that is the Futurity, Wright was overwhelmed after the win. However, he was quick to share the credit.
“I’ve got the best team at home. There are guys that aren’t there [training with me anymore], Russell [Probert] and Nick [Howard] that have gone on to do their own programs, but they’ve all contributed so hard,” he said. “Jared’s [Jones] is there now, Lilla Bell and the Lloyds. We have a great team and I couldn’t do without them. My family is awesome. My mom came out; three kids and Gloria are here, and you know, they’ve made everything so easy. My crew and my family have done twice as much work as I have to get here.” Wright follows his brother, 1985 Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion Greg Wright, into the NRCHA history books with the win. 138
