Sarah Dawson & Selvarey
2020 Metallic Cat NRCHA Snaffle Bit Open Champions
Courtesy International Horse Press
The atmosphere on Open Snaffle Bit Futurity finals night inside Will Rogers Coliseum was nothing short of adrenaline-charged as fans were treated to one dynamic performance after another at the $1.3 million National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity, presented by Metallic Cat.
The crowning of Open, Cinch Intermediate Open and Limited Open champions represented the dreams of owners, breeders and trainers coming to fruition. In typical reined cow horse fashion it all came down to the fence work. Open Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion Selvarey ridden by Sarah Dawson 2020 Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Champion The leaderboard was stacked as Open finals fence work began. Madeleine Claire Fountain's Ricato Suave (Metallic Cat x Hip Hip Sue Rey x Dual Rey) and Clay Volmer held down the No. 1 spot with a 440.5 (223 herd/ 217.5 rein), but Sarah Dawson and both of the great horses she made the finals on were hot on his heels. Dawson ranked second, trailing by one point, with Smart Chic An Tari (219 herd/ 220 rein) owned by Aaron Ranch. She was sitting third on Sheri Jamieson's mare Selvarey (216 herd/ 220.5 rein) with a 436.5. Last out in the second set it was SnapDragons (Gunnatrashya x Catnaps x High Brow Cat), ridden by Zane Davis for Shane Law, that took command of the lead with a scalding 222 down the fence and the resulting 656.5 composite (215.5 herd/ 219 rein). Ricato Suave (Metallic Cat x Hip Hip Sue Rey x Dual Rey) and Volmer were first up in the third set, posting a 216 to join SnapDragons and Davis at the top of the leaderboard with a 656.5. 14
Chris, Hadley Grace & Sarah Dawson NOVEMBER 2020
No. 26 of 28 in the draw, it was Dawson and Selvarey who rose to the challenge, executing their fence run to perfection. Selvarey and Dawson were rewarded with a score of 224 by the judges. Dawson's resulting 660 composite on Selvarey cinched the 2020 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity championship by a three and one half point margin for earnings of $125,000. SnapDragons and Davis shared the reserve championship with Ricato Suave and Volmer, each of whom earned $80,000. Surrounded by friends and family, including her 6-month-old daughter Hadley Grace and her husband Chris, Dawson explained how the win was quite special considering that Selvarey's dam Shine Smarter, by WR This Cats Smart, was her first Open Snaffle Bit Futurity finalist. Selvarey is a Dual Rey daughter and is a product of Dawson's parents Richard and Cheryl Winters' breeding program. Dawson describes the mare as having been exceptional from the start. “She’s been such an easy mare to train, she tries really hard and she hates to take a wrong step. She’s a dream to train, she’s awesome," said Dawson. The humble champion not only credited her horse, but also her spouse and fellow NRCHA Professional, Chris, for his role in her win. "My husband, Chris, he’s just such a support system to me," she said. "We ride and train horses together all day long and if it weren’t for him and having his eyeballs on me all the time I wouldn’t be where I am today." Of her stellar finals performance Dawson explained that her mindset was simply to put forth a solid effort. "Winning it wasn’t on my radar at all," said Dawson. "I was just trying to put a clean, smooth run together and get as big a check as we can at that point. It comes together when you least expect it." The Open Futurity champion was awarded top-notch prizes.

Bob Tallman named 2020 Legend of ProRodeo
ProRodeo Hall of Fame announcer Bob Tallman has been named the 2020 Legend of ProRodeo. Tallman will be honored at the Wrangler Gold Buckle Gala on Nov. 30 at Billy Bob’s Texas in Fort Worth. “I’ve been the host of the Legend of ProRodeo event three or four times, and I asked
(ProRodeo Hall of Fame director) Kent Sturman, ‘Is there somebody older than me who might not be in good health that is more deserving?’” Tallman said. “I have been so over awarded in 50 years, and in one week I got the call to work the (2020 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo), then I passed my real estate test and then I got a call from Kent Sturman. It was a Triple Crown week.

“I’m going to give the credit to the selection committees. I’m going to give the credit to the Lord. As long as I can be humble enough to accept by those who chose this and I can be an example for others who will receive it (Legend of ProRodeo) in the future and that I can walk the walk and talk the talk and set the example in receiving it for the younger people

coming up in the world, I accept it.” During a career that has spanned more than five decades, Tallman has announced more than 15,000 rodeo performances in the U.S., Mexico, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Tallman’s gravel-laced baritone and story-telling prowess are legendary in ProRodeo. In 2020, Tallman will work his record 26th NFR at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, Dec. 3-12. Tallman was named the 2019 PRCA Announcer of the Year for the 10th time and was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2004. “When you think of legends in professional rodeo, Bob Tallman has to come to mind,” Sturman said. “He is one of the best rodeo announcers of all time. He is a wealth of information and stories. He has seen it all in our sport and has worked tirelessly to inform the fans, give back to our industry and help to make the sport better than when he started. He was an obvious choice for the 2020 Legend of ProRodeo.” Born Oct. 25, 1947, in Winnemucca, Nev., Tallman tried his hand as a rodeo competitor, but he quickly discovered his forte was behind a microphone, as evidenced by his first PRCA Announcer of the Year Award in 1982. Tallman’s career began in Fallon, Nev., when he told a rodeo producer he thought he could do a better job than the announcer was doing. The producer told him to give it a try. Tallman earned $100 for that first job and has never looked back. “This (Legend of ProRodeo honor) was never on my radar,” Tallman said. “Any time you try in life to set yourself up for things like this, God doesn’t like that.

One of the all-time leading dams in the history of the sport of cutting has died.
Autumn Boon, the mother of more than $1.9 million in earners, died Monday, Sept. 28, due to agerelated laminitis, reported Kyle Manion, of Manion Ranch. “It is with a heavy heart we report the loss of one of the best horses the cutting industry has ever known,” said Manion, who managed the mare for owner Karen Freeman. Show & Breeding Career With lifetime earnings of $258,185, Autumn Boon’s wins included back-to-back editions of the NCHA Super Stakes: the 1998 Open Championship and 1999 Classic Open Champion. Upon retiring from her illustrious show career, her life as a brilliant producer began. Many of her offspring are now household names, and she has proven to be a mare capable of producing both

great stallions and mares. “Boonie” ranked as the third all-time leading cutting dam, trailing only her mother — Royal Blue Boon — and Stylish Play Lena, according to the 2020 EquiStat Broodmare Statistics. Her top three money earners also carry the distinction of being successful sires: Equi-Stat Elite $5 Million Sire Im Countin Checks

possible remedy, it was decided by her veterinarian, owner, and us, that out of respect and love for her, euthanization was our only option. The timing was very important to us also, as we wanted to spare her the pain of a long, inevitable decline. While the decision was soul crushing, we all knew that waiting would only serve us, and not her.” On her last day, Manion said the mare was “still bright, in good spirits and being the ‘Cookie Monster’ that she was, enjoying her favorite treats.” The 26-year-old daughter of Dual Pep and out of Royal Blue Boon (by Boon Bar) was owned by Karen Freeman and had been managed by Manion Ranch for the past 20 years. “She was like family. Very affectionate. Just an all-around package, and we all loved her very much,” Manion said. “We were privileged to manage Autumn Boon, and honored that Karen Freeman placed her confidence in us for so many years.”

Jason had the privilege to work for Million Dollar Rider Corey Cushing for three and half years. There he started his show career allowing him the opportunity to show his first futurity horse; in 2012 he finished as a finalist. His last stop was Caldwell, Idaho when a position with Million Dollar Rider Jake Telford became available. Jason spent three and a half years with Jake learning and excelling in the show pen. It was in 2015 when Jason stood out and earned over $38,000 making him Equi Stats Limited Open Rider of the year. Jason’s wife Kailey now oversees the barn management all while caring for their sons, Carder and Cobey. She was raised on her family’s ranch in Arizona where she grew up riding and competing. Her love for horses and cattle along with her mind for business are an important asset to Jason’s program. In the Fall of 2020, Jason moved his business to Arizona and is currently training out of Lamont Cross in Scottsdale. Jason and Kailey are in the process of building a facility and are looking forward to what this next step will bring for their family and business.

DEBBIE COOPER FREE RANCH RIDING CLINIC
Q - What can folks expect to learn at your Ranch Riding Clinic during the No Bling Show at HorseShoe Park in Queen Creek on December 4th? A - We will work on the technicalities of the ins and outs of Ranch Riding through a Judge’s perspective. We will cover the insider tips and an easy and fool proof way to up your scores. Q - Why has Ranch Riding become the “flavor of the day” in the western show pen? A - Because it’s FUN! Bottom line, people are enjoying it and having fun - a good time. Q - What kind of horses are suitable for Ranch Riding? A- A horse that has had an education in Reining or Working Cowhorse is a good start. That way they already have the basics and all you need to do is teach them the transitions needed for Each Riding. Q - In Ranch Riding classes what is the desirable look for attire? A - It is a modern but authentic Western look. Classic pieces like a vest, wild rag, chinks, button down shirt. It is part of the overall look that maters and authentically modern Western is a good description. Tastefully coordinated with the horse and tack. The overall look must be pleasing to the eye, and not a distraction from the horse. Part of the beauty of this class is there is general no bling, but all Western! Q - Describe the type of saddle one should have for Ranch Riding classes. A - Any quality Western Saddle works in Ranch Riding. It is about function and fit first and foremost. The saddle must fit the horse and rider. Q - As one, what guidance can you offer young people that wish to be world champions? A - To find a mentor or trainer that has and is successful, that they admire and has the experience and success in Ranch Riding competition. Be prepared to make the commitment, time and devotion to actualize the goal and become successful.

KAREN GRAHAM FREE HORSEMANSHIP CLINIC
Q - What can folks expect to learn at your Horsemanship Clinic during the No Bling Show at HorseShoe Park in Queen Creek on December 4th. A- I hope to teach riders to be better horseman, in whatever phase they need. Horsemanship isn’t just about how you sit in the saddle. Q - There isn’t much you haven’t seen in the horse business. What is one piece of advice you can share with the up and comers not to do? A - Never lose yourself to what other people say or do. Be who you are. Trends will always come and go and people with them. You probably came into this business with a love of horses - Do not ever lose that! Q - People have a hard time keeping their horses shod correctly, how do you do it? A - That’s the million dollar question, corrective shoeing is usually the downfall. You cannot change how a horse is built. Pay attention to how their hooves land on the flat normal ground. They should land flat, and not roll off either side. Shoe them accordingly to their angle. Shoeing properly is the single most important factor to success. Q - What is your favorite part of the horse business? A - Absolutely the horses are my favorite part of this business. They are truly God’s gift. They have saved me so many times in my life. Whenever you get down, just ride a horse! Nothing is better! Q - Back-in-the-day, trainers had large stables of customers, now-adays it’s trended toward just a few clients, per trainer. Why is that? A - I think stables might be smaller these days because the costs are so much higher. It makes better sense to only ride what you can manage. In today’s competitions the intensity is draining. The more you have, the less time each horse gets. People demand results, so less is easier. Q - Are woman getting a fair-shot with the judges, or do men have an advantage? A - I think it is equal. There are great trainers in every division. There are so many female judges now, I don’t feel men vs. women is even a question. As a judge myself, I can say I look at horses. It’s all about the performance on that day. Tomorrow is a new day, so never give up! 36

JASON GRIMSHAW
FREE BOXING-COWHORSE CLINIC Q - What is it about. Boxing, please share what it is? A - Boxing is a non pro and youth cow horse event. after the rider completes the reining pattern one cow is put into the arena for them to hold on the end fence for 50 seconds. In that 50 seconds the rider and horse are to control the cow by moving it, stopping it, and turning it. the score is reflected on form, control and degree of difficulty. Q - What kind of horses are good for Boxing? A- Horses that are quick, athletic and cowy are typically best suited for the boxing. Q - These performance horses you train, can you share how many minutes a training session lasts? A - The length of a training session depends solely on the individual being worked .there is no set time for a horses training they all learn at there own pace however horses that try hard to learn and retain the exercises for this event usually have a shorter training session. Q - For folks looking to take lessons, how does that work? A - We are very fortunate in AZ to have good trainers and horseman all over the state. an easy way to find a trainer close to where you live is to contact the AZ quarter horse association. they can provide a list of trainers for you to contact that specialize in your desired discipline.Â

INTERVIEW
AzQHA CEO DOUG HULS Q - The AzQHA is hosting a No Bling Show Dec. 5th-6th. What does No Bling mean? A - No Bling indicates exhibitors are not required to wear any fancy show clothes ordinary Western Wear is acceptable as long as it meets requirements of a long sleeve collared shirt, boots and hat or helmet. AzQHA invites all to attend no matter an exhibitor’s skill level or experience. Q - At the show are FREE clinics on Friday Dec. 4th with four great trainers, from Arizona. Is it open for folks of all breeds and disciplines? A - Absolutely everyone is welcome to attend. These will be demonstration only, meaning attendees are not horseback or handling a horse. Q - Is this event for all breeds and levels of ability? A - Yes, All breed and Rookie classes are available. Exhibitors of all levels are welcome to attend. Q - Who can benefit most by exhibiting at this event? A - A wealth of knowledge will be available at the event as well as a welcoming environment. Any equine enthusiast can gain valuable experience at this show. Q - Do you have to be a member in any organization or pay a fee if you are not going to show? A - You do not have to be a member of an organization unless you show in the AQHA classes. AQHA requires membership to show in their classes. We encourage all attendees to join AzQHA. Joining will keep them informed of all AzQHA has to offer. Q - There will 3 AQHA judges, how does this benefit the beginner or novice rider that is NEW to showing, or may have a green horse? A - Exhibitors in most classes will get to show their horses twice and receive three judges opinions of their performance. Three opinions will provide valuable knowledge to exhibitors in evaluating their performances. In pattern classes, the beginning or novice rider will be able to view each judges score sheets to determine how they scored on each maneuver. Q - This event is in Queen Creek at the Horseshoe Park, and is the first time AzQHA will be holding an event there. Tell us about that decision? A - Horseshoe Park has much to offer AzQHA events with their covered arenas and many outdoor arenas. Everyone should have plenty of room to work their horses and socialize. AzQHA is thrilled to offer this fun and welcoming event. Q - How concerned are you about COVID for Sun Circuit? A - Most of my concern lies in government decisions and policies as we approach March. I have attended several horse shows since the beginning of the pandemic, in my opinion, with traditional shows mostly occurring in outdoor arenas or very large indoor arenas with small audiences it is relatively easy for exhibitors to social distance and maintain safety protocols. 38

Doug Hulls Bio Huls grew up in Iowa as a kid with a passion for horses. His family didn’t own horses, but any time there was an event anywhere around that had horses, he begged a ride from someone just so he could have some small involvement. That’s all it took. He was hooked. Huls saved $375 from shoveling driveways and raking leaves and borrowed another $375 from his mom – with interest – and bought his first horse when he was 12. His brother had a place with acreage where he kept it, and Huls rode his bike a few miles down a gravel road every day to take care of it. From those early days, he built one experience on top of another to forge a career centered around his passion. After attending Iowa State for two years, Huls moved to Texas in 1985 and landed at El Centro ranch. He apprenticed with trainers there, and worked with greats such as Steve Heckaman and Tom Chown, building a solid reputation for hard work. After several years he moved on to Colorado, and eventually to Arizona in 1990. Huls built a busy and successful training operation, and became an American Quarter Horse Association judge in1996. In 2011, Huls took over producing the Arizona Sun Circuit, where his experience as an exhibitor, trainer and judge continue to influence every decision he makes. He views his transition from being inside the rings to behind the scenes as one that progressed naturally.
AzQHA
In 2013, the AZQHA took over the show dates of the Scottsdale Classic and, with Huls in charge, built a new show that targeting all levels of exhibitors. It inherited many traits of the Sun Circuit while not becoming intimidating. The Arizona Fall Championship quickly took its place as favored destination on show schedules. It is well known for its expansive line of tremendous awards for all

RYAN & ANDREA KAIL FREE SHOWMANSHIP CLINIC
Kail Quarter Horses is dedicated to providing exceptional training to horses and non pros, creating a fun and successful horse show experience.
Ryan grew up surrounded by amazing horsemen and horsewomen; parents Bob and Debbie Kail and Grandfather Greg Whalen have all been incredibly talented and successful horse trainers. They’ve passed on their immense knowledge and experience in the training and care of these amazing animals! Ryan combined their knowledge with that of incredible family friends to create his own style that worked for his horses. Ryan won five AQHA World Championships in the Halter division as well as one in the Roping. He continued showing successfully while winning a Reserve World Championship title in Youth Showmanship At Halter as well as a Congress Championship title in Youth Horsemanship. When Ryan decided to try his hand at roping it was Don Murphy and the entire Murphy family who passed on their expertise to guide Ryan to a World Championship in Amateur Heading. As Ryan honed in on his training techniques and learned more about the All Around and Working Horse industry, Ryan knew his true calling was to help youth and amateur riders enhance their skills and show at the highest levels. In 2008, Ryan turned professional and began living his dream. Ryan obtained his judge’s cards in both AQHA and NRHA competition, which has allowed him to stay ahead of industry trends and give back to the industry that has shaped him. Andrea has been extremely blessed to have learned from some truly amazing trainers. She began her training under the guidance of Tommy Sheets who helped Andrea ride Zippo LTD and their 1st Congress Championship at just 10 years of age in the 11 & Under Trail. The duo went on to earn several more Congress Championships and Year End High Point awards before being sent onto Jason Martin and Charlie Cole for further guidance. levels, creative giveaways, and overall fun and welcoming atmosphere. The show has also fulfilled its mission of bringing more Arizona exhibitors to a world- class show. Huls predicts a good future for the big shows with strong continued involvement. The AZQHA’s mission extends beyond horse shows to promoting the interests of breeders and ranchers, honoring the past and supporting the future, as well as growing a range of activities. Huls will be working on expanding those goals and providing opportunities for clinics, education and special events. He also envisions developing greater relationships
wonderful trainers as well as amazing people, and thanks to them Andrea was able to meet her amazing husband, Ryan. Under the guidance of Jason and Charlie, Andrea and LT went on to set a record for most classes won by one horse, one rider at the Congress in a single year, winning every class they entered in 1998: 12-14 Showmanship, Western Pleasure, Horsemanship, Trail, and Western Riding. Jason won the Sr. Trail and Andrea won the 12-14 All Around as well as the 18 and Under All-Around. Due to the Andrea living far away from her horses, she began a new chapter that allowed them to be closer under the guidance of Vicky Holt. In that program she earned multiple Congress Championships, a World Championship in Trail (winning the prelims and finals under all 5 cards) a Reserve World Championship in Western Riding, and a Bronze in Horsemanship!! LT was a once in a lifetime horse who now holds a place in the NSBA hall of fame. Ryan and Andrea work diligently to provide you the best prepared horse so when the time comes to show, you will be ready to achieve success. Ryan and Andrea’s training styles compliment each other to make the perfect training team for both the horse and rider. Ryan and Andrea have found great success in the Open arena while their clients have found huge success in the Youth, Amateur, Select and Novice arenas. FEI Includes Reining in NEW Rider’s Safety Helmet Rule
All dressage and reining riders competing internationally must wear approved protective headgear from 1 January, 2021.
AQHA Presents PRCA Horse of the Year Awards
The new rule – adopted at the FEI’s 2019 General Assembly in Moscow last month – effectively removes each discipline’s jurisdiction over helmets.
Under new FEI [international horse sports’ governing body] rules, helmets must be worn by anyone mounted on a horse at any time on any showground. Reining is covered by the ruling but not vaulting, which isn’t considered ‘riding’. Originally, an allencompassing helmet rule for all riders was proposed for January 2020. Advocating a year’s delay, some delegates said it would enable manufacturers to produce helmets that comply with safety standards but maintain the traditional ‘look’. During his unmatched ProRodeo career, Trevor Brazile
Brazile, the King of the Cowboys, has won a PRCA-record 25 gold buckles – a record 14 in all-around (2002-04, 2006-15 and 2018); three in tie-down roping (2007, 2009-10); one in team roping (2010); and seven in steer roping (2006-07, 2011, 2013-15 and 2019). Brazile enters his 23rd Clem McSpadden National Finals Steer Roping at the Kansas Star Arena in Mulvane, Nov. 6-7, not only chasing another gold buckle, but another milestone. The Decatur, Texas, cowboy is $12,865 away from reaching the $7 million mark in career earnings – no one else has broken $3.6 million in ProRodeo. "I think reaching a mark like that is just there to motivate the next generation, not only of cowboys but rodeo committees and (PRCA) administration to know that has been done in rodeo, and it will get easier each year to do that if everything keeps on the

same trajectory, " said Brazile, 43. To fathom how impressive the $7 million mark is, the next cowboy on PRCA's career earnings list is ProRodeo Hall of Famer Cody Ohl at $3,510,941. "I was in Colorado Springs (Colo.) when (ProRodeo Hall of Famer) Roy Cooper had passed the $2 million mark (in career earnings), and they were doing a photo shoot for the cover of the PSN," Brazile said. "I was
rodeoing with Roy at the time, and I was thinking how cool that was that someone did that doing what we love to do in rodeo. Man, rodeo has been really, really good to me." Before the 2018 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, Brazile announced he was cutting back on his rodeo schedule to spend more time with his family. Brazile is still competing at the highest level in steer roping. The reigning world champion is

fourth in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $48,387. He trails leader Cole Patterson by $6,211. Brazile's seven steer roping gold buckles are second on the all-time list behind only ProRodeo Hall of Famer Guy Allen's 18. Brazile also has 35 NFSR go-round wins, second to Allen's 48. Brazile also is the top career money winner at the NFSR with $628,208.
"Just like everybody else I want to have a good (NFSR)," Brazile said. "Everybody there is capable. It is just who executes those two nights. That's probably the biggest difference in the steer roping finals than the NFR is there are five rounds each night versus one round each night. If that's your night you have the potential not only to win one round but win multiple rounds. That's the good thing. The bad thing is the opposite is also true. You really need to be hitting on all cylinders when you get there." To read more about Brazile approaching the $7 million mark, check out the latest edition of ProRodeo Sports News.

TANNER TOMLINSON RALLIED TO BE TEAM ROPING HEADER ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
BAREBACK RIDING ROOKIE OF THE YEAR COLE REINER QUALIFIES FOR NFR
Less than $1,000 was the deciding factor in who would win the PRCA | Resistol Rookie of the Year for team roping heading. Texas cowboy Tanner Tomlinson came out ahead in the home stretch when he and partner Brady Norman won the Buffalo (Texas) PRCA Pro Rodeo for $1,336, Sept. 19.
"It's a big accomplishment, and you only get one shot at it," said Tomlinson, 20. "It means a lot to me and was one of the goals I can mark off my list." Britt Smith had an early lead thanks to the $4,502 he won at the Fort Worth (Texas) Stock Show & Rodeo in February, just before COVID-19 put all ProRodeo competition on hold. But Tomlinson rallied later in the season to finish No. 1 in the rookie standings with $22,534. "I didn't get into San Antonio and Britt Smith had a big lead on me and I was a couple thousand back, but I started really looking at it (the rookie standings) when we were in Filer, Idaho, (Sept. 3-6)," Tomlinson said. "We placed at a few more and I got within $1,000 of Britt, and that's when I realized how much it meant, when I was that close to closing the gap." Tomlinson and Norman shook off the rust from the COVID-19 hiatus by winning the Coleman (Texas) PRCA Rodeo for $2,733, June 13. They earned $1,648 by tying for fourth in the first round at the Spanish Fork (Utah) Fiesta Days Rodeo, July 24 and won the Wyoming State Fair & Rodeo in Douglas for $1,757, Aug. 14. "I went home for a few days and practiced and got my roping back right," Tomlinson said. "Then, at Spanish Fork we did well in the first round, and that was a big deal for me. It got my hopes back up and I was back in the zone and roped good for the rest of the year. Spanish Fork is what got me on the ball." A few weeks later, Tomlinson and Norman scored their biggest check of the season at the Magic Valley Stampede in Filer, $3,032 for placing third. The pair are off to a strong start in the 2021 season, earning $2,143 by placing second at the Waller County Fair & Rodeo, in Hempstead, Texas, Oct. 3. "Hopefully they won't cancel San Antonio and Houston so I can start off strong and try to make my first NFR this year," Tomlinson said. The rookie of the year for every ProRodeo event except bull riding was basically a done deal when the regular season ended, but nothing is official until the season's audit is complete. Check ProRodeo.com in the coming weeks as each of this year's top rookies share their thoughts on winning this once-in-a-lifetime award. 58
Not only did Cole Reiner qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, but he also finished atop the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings in bareback riding by a margin of $31,309. "Honestly, it was kind of relieving since it's usually a close race and there were great guys in it this year," Reiner said. "This is something they will announce for the rest of my career. It's a big accomplishment, and a lot of people have won it and gone on to be successful." He'll enter the Wrangler NFR in the No. 12 position with $45,043. "Winning Rookie of the Year is a pretty big deal, it was my original goal this year," said Reiner, 22. "The amount of rookies of the year who make the NFR is pretty high. That is a cool accomplishment and a big confidence booster going into this first NFR." Of all Reiner's accomplishments in 2020, doing well at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo and the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo are among his proudest accomplishments. He won $6,580 in Fort Worth and $5,750 in San Antonio. "Going out and winning a lot in Fort Worth and San Antonio was a big deal since you're new and don't know where you're at with your riding ability," Reiner said. "So to compete against those guys and do well there got my confidence up and got me feeling like I belonged more." The Kaycee, Wyo., cowboy first realized the Wrangler NFR was a realistic goal early in the season when Amy Wilson interviewed him for The Cowboy Channel in San Antonio. "I hadn't realized how much I won and that I was in the top 10 in the world standings right there, and she started talking about possibly the NFR and that was the first time it was a real thought," Reiner said. "It was a goal, but I was mostly worried about the Rookie of the Year race, and I was already winning it by like $15,000, so I sat down after San Antonio and re-looked at what this year could possibly be, and even then, $20,000 won't get you anywhere in the PRCA on a regular year. It was going to be $80,000 to $100,000 to make the NFR, but then COVID hit, so $20,000 was a good amount of money to have." Of course, it wasn't all smooth sailing for Reiner. "There was a little bit there before August when I was falling out of the Top 15 and was 20th in the world, but then I got on a roll and solidified my spot after the Riggin Rally (in Darby, Mont.)," Reiner said. Reiner picked up $2,050 in Darby, and a few weeks later he finished the regular season by earning $4,680 at the Gold Buckle Beer ProRodeo Tour Finale in Rapid City, S.D. "In Rapid City, when Boyd (Polhamus) announced I made my first NFR, that was a cool moment for sure," Reiner said.

Endocrine-disrupting
chemicals linked to equine metabolic syndrome, study shows
Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in a horse's environment may play a role in the development of equine metabolic syndrome (EMS). This finding, made by Morris Animal Foundation-funded researchers at The University of Minnesota, could explain some of the variability in EMS severity that can't be explained by other commonly measured factors, such as diet, exercise and season. The study was published in Chemosphere.
"This is a pivotal piece of a very complicated jigsaw puzzle. There are a lot of horse owners out there who are very diligent about providing their horses fantastic care, but the horse is still diagnosed," said Dr. Molly McCue, Professor and interim Associate Dean of Research in the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Minnesota. "It's important to be aware that these chemicals contribute to the problem, so we can look for ways to reduce horses' exposure to them."
The team studied more than 300 horses from 32 farms in the United States and Canada. They focused on Welsh ponies and Morgan horses, as these breeds are more likely to develop EMS than others. The team collected data on the horses' lifestyles, including diet, exercise and past illnesses, as well as their farm location. Researchers also examined plasma from the horses and looked for EDCs that have effects on receptors in the horse (estrogen [EEQ] and aryl hydrocarbon [TEQ] receptors). Simultaneously, they determined whether an individual horse had blood test results consistent with an EMS profile (including insulin and glucose at rest and following a sugar challenge). The team then analyzed the results to look for correlations between plasma EDC concentration and these variables. The team concluded that accumulation of EDCs may explain some environmental variance seen in horses with EMS, but the precise role and dose response to EDCs in horses with EMS is not clear at this time. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals usually are human-made substances, found in products such as pesticides, plastics and personal care products. They are heavily prevalent in the environment and can mimic a body's hormones, blocking real ones from doing their jobs. Because of this, they are known to produce harmful effects in humans and wildlife. Horses likely come into contact with EDCs through their food. Equine metabolic syndrome, which has no cure, is characterized by endocrine abnormalities in horses and ponies. Affected horses and ponies have a tendency to develop pockets of fat and/or become obese, and they have altered insulin dynamics. EMS also is one of the most common causes of laminitis, a painful and very debilitating inflammation of tissue in a horse's hooves, leading to reduced performance, and in severe cases necessitating euthanasia. "The more we know about a disease, especially a devastating and incurable disease like EMS, the more we can find innovative ways to prevent it," said Dr. Kelly Diehl, Morris Animal Foundation Interim Vice President of Scientific Programs. "While EDCs are difficult to avoid at the moment, the information from this study will greatly improve veterinarians' ability to predict the disease and provide opportunities to prevent it." This is the first study to examine associations between EDCs and disease in domestic animals. Dr. McCue said it remains to be seen how significant the association is, but hopes future studies will further scientific understanding and help advance veterinary care for horses. 60
First cloned Przewalski’s horse brings hope for species revival
The San Diego Zoo Global (SDZG) announced last month the birth of the world’s first cloned Przewalski’s horse at Timber Creek Veterinary Hospital in Texas. The foal, born to a surrogate mother, was cloned from a male Przewalski’s horse whose DNA was cryopreserved 40 years ago at the SDZG Frozen Zoo, according to an SDZG release. SDZG and ViaGen Equine (a division of ViaGen Pets and Equine) collaborated on the effort with assistance from Revive & Restore, a wildlife conservation organization that promotes the use of biotechnology in conservation practices. “This birth expands the opportunity for [the] genetic rescue of endangered wild species,” says Ryan Phelan, executive director of Revive & Restore, in the release. “Advanced reproductive technologies, including cloning, can save species by allowing us to restore genetic diversity that would have otherwise been lost in time.”
The foal, named Kurt in honor of Kurt Benirshke, MD, one of the founders of the SDZG Frozen Zoo and conservation research program, will eventually be transferred to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park to be integrated into a breeding herd of his species, according to the release. “The cells of hundreds of Przewalski’s horses reside in the Frozen Zoo, and form the basis for new opportunities in applying scientific research to preserve species into the future,” says Oliver Ryder, PhD, director of genetics at SDZG. Once extinct in the wild, Przewalski’s horses have survived the past 40 years almost entirely in zoos around the world. All of the surviving horses are related to 12 Przewalski’s horses born in the wild. Intensive breeding programs have helped to revive and re-introduce the species back into the native grasslands of China and Mongolia, but genetic diversity losses have occurred, says SDZG. “This colt is expected to be one of the most genetically important individuals of his species,” said SDZG’s Chief Life Sciences Officer Bob Wiese, PhD, adding that he and his team are hopeful that the Przewalski’s foal will bring genetic variation for the future of this species. Timber Creek Veterinary Hospital has worked with ViaGen Equine for more than 15 years, foaling hundreds of cloned horses for clients around the world, says SDZG. “This Przewalski’s foal was produced using our proven equine cloning techniques,” said Blake Russell, president of ViaGen Equine. “Thanks to the Timber Creek team, this special foal is off to a great start.”

Report on United States and China Agricultural Trade
Washington, DC – The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) today issued a report highlighting the progress made to date in implementing the agricultural provisions in the U.S.-China Phase One Economic and Trade Agreement, which is delivering historic results for American agriculture. Since the Agreement entered into force, the United States and China have addressed a multitude of structural barriers in China that had been impeding exports of U.S. food and agricultural products. To date, China has implemented at least 50 of the 57 technical commitments under the Phase One Agreement. These structural changes will benefit American farmers for decades to come. China also has substantially ramped up its purchases of U.S. agricultural products. To date,
62
China has purchased over $23 billion in agricultural products, approximately 71% of its target under the Phase One Agreement. Highlights outlined in the report include: Corn: Outstanding sales of U.S. corn to China are at an all-time high of 8.7 million tons. Soybeans: U.S. soybeans sales for marketing year 2021 are off to the strongest start in history, with outstanding sales to China double 2017 levels. Sorghum: U.S. exports of sorghum to China from January to August 2020 totaled $617 million, up from $561 million for the same period in 2017. Pork: U.S. pork exports to China hit an all-time record in just the first five months of 2020. Beef: U.S. beef and beef products exports to China through August 2020 are already more than triple the total for 2017.
In addition to these products, USDA expects 2020 sales to China to hit record or near-record levels for numerous other U.S. agricultural products including pet food, alfalfa hay, pecans, peanuts, and prepared foods. “This China Phase One Agreement is proof President Trump’s negotiating strategy is working. While it took China a long time to realize President Trump was serious, this deal is a huge success for the entire economy. This agreement finally levels the playing field for U.S. agriculture and is a bonanza for America’s farmers, ranchers, and producers,” said U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue. “Being able to participate in this market in a more fair and equitable way has generated more sales that are supporting higher prices and strengthening the rural economy.” “President Trump delivered on
NOVEMBER 2020
his promise to confront China’s unfair trade practices and expand market opportunities for U.S. agriculture through the Phase One Agreement. Since the Agreement entered into force eight months ago, we have seen remarkable improvements in our agricultural trade relationship with China, which will benefit our farmers and ranchers for years to come,” said U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer. USTR and USDA continue to work closely with the Chinese government to ensure that the Phase One Agreement is fully and properly implemented, so that access for U.S. food and agricultural products into the Chinese market can continue to expand moving forward. For more information, please read the Interim Report on the Economic and Trade Agreement between the U.S. and China.

Banner Trouble at the Snaffle Bit
During the NRCHA Hackamore Classic Finals at the Snaffle Bit Futurity held in Fort Worth this past week, an unexpected complication occurred — a banner hanging in the arena threw the majority of the equine contestants off their game. A black and yellow banner for the TV show Yellowstone seemingly spooked all but two horses, many taking zeros in the competition (which was eventually re-run). Luckily the unforeseen distraction didn't cost any of the contestant the prize money. Taylor Sheridan, the co-creator and producer of Paramount's hit series Yellowstone, who was

Tamie Smith and Elliot-V Win the 2020 USEF CCI3*-L Eventing National Championship at Galway Downs International by Leslie Potter/US Equestrian Communications Department
Temecula, Calif. – California eventer Tamie Smith had a big victory on home turf at the 2020 Galway Downs International on Halloween weekend, winning the USEF CCI3*-L Eventing National Championship with Elliot-V, 11-yearold Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Smith’s student, Luisa Southworth.

Smith took over the ride on Elliot-V when Southworth left for college, and he’s become an exceptional horse at the Intermediate level. “We did our first intermediate here last fall,” said Smith. “I did my second intermediate at the CCI3*-S at Woodside three weeks ago to get him qualified for this weekend. He was great there and then he was just super here this weekend.” Smith and Elliot-V took a narrow early lead with a 29.8 in dressage, putting them just barely ahead of Asia Vedder (Carpenteria, Calif.) and Isi, who scored a 29.9. But Smith held her lead with a double clear cross-country and just 0.4 time faults in show jumping. For 2020, Clayton Fredericks took over the task of designing the cross-country course at Galway, and it suited Elliot-V well.
70
“It was an awesome, super galloping course,” said Smith. “A little bit twisty here and there, but it was great. Clayton and [course builder] Bert Wood did a great job on the design. I was first out, so we weren’t sure how the time was going to be, but that horse has such a ginormous gallop stride that it was great.” Vedder and Isi, her own 10-year-old Thoroughbred/Holsteiner gelding, maintained their second-place standing through all three phases, with only 1.2 time penalties from cross-country day and 4 jumping and 0.4 time penalties in show jumping. Andrea Baxter (Paso Robles, Calif) and her 10-year-old Holsteiner/Thoroughbred gelding, Laguna Seca, rounded out the top three in the USEF CCI3*-L National Championship, finishing fifth overall in the division with a score of 44.0. The National Young Riders Championship for the John H. Fritz Trophy is awarded to the highest placed US citizen in the USEF National Young Rider Eventing Championships, which is open to riders ages 16 through 21. For 2020, Charlotte Babbitt (South Lake Tahoe, Calif.) took home the John H. Fritz Trophy with her own Dutch Warmblood gelding, 2 A.M. Sophie Click (Snoqualmie, Wash.) was Reserve Champion with her own and Amy Click’s nineyear-old Holsteiner gelding, Quidproquo. This year’s event marked the first time that the USEF CCI3* National Championship has been held on the West Coast, and after a challenging 2020 season marked by event cancellations and unexpected changes, a successful event was a welcome occurrence. “Galway Downs really pulled out all the stops to make it an amazing National Championship,” said Smith. “We’re grateful that they really stepped up to the plate. I can see the competition growing into a great event. It was really fun because it’s my hometown and it’s the West Coast, and I really wanted it to run the way it did for the east coasters coming out here to show that we have great events out here. It was super to have the support.”

with her hometown partner, Kutter Kortis. The duo roped four steers in 34.10 seconds to take home $33,360 and Edens' split was enough to maintain the leaderboard. "Usually every time we rope together, we win a little," Edens, who also split $10,800 with Kortis in the #10.5 Shootout at the 2019 US Finals in Oklahoma City, said. Edens, 18, has quickly made a name for herself as one of the most talented breakaway ropers going down the road as the sport continues to expand horizons on what seems like a daily basis. When she earned $53,200 at the 2019 Komatsu Equipment Days of '47 Cowboy Games & Rodeo presented by Zions Bank in Salt Lake City, the first year they added the event, even she didn't anticipate how quickly breakaway would progress over the next 18 months. While roping calves is her specialty, she comes by turning steers honestly. "My dad wants me to team rope more than I'd prefer," Edens, who is the daughter of 2007 Wrangler National Finals qualifier, Tommy Edens, said. "I don't practice [team roping] as much as I would like, but I do seem to just grab onto it."

Teen roping phenom Josie Conner rises above the devastation en route to WCRA’s Women’s Rodeo World Championship
BY: KENDRA SANTOS
Don’t talk to Josie Conner about being devastated by life’s little letdowns. She and her parents, Jade and Wendi, had their house and barn demolished by Hurricane Laura—a Category-4 storm that basically wiped out Lake Charles, Louisiana, and tied the Last Island Hurricane of 1856 as the strongest on record to make landfall in The Pelican State—in the early morning hours of August 27. Despite Laura’s deadly destruction, and the area flooding that followed courtesy of Hurricane Delta in early October, 17-year-old Josie’s been on one of the biggest fall rodeo rolls in the entire sport.
“We were evacuated, and left home (in rural Iowa, Louisiana, 10 minutes east of Lake Charles) a few days before Laura hit,” said Josie, who’s recently racked up $36,000 in breakaway roping earnings. “The Guy Ranch (home to cowgirl kingpin Lari Dee Guy) in Abilene, Texas, is nine hours from here, and that’s been our second home. That’s where we went for about three weeks to wait out the hurricanes that were happening here in Louisiana. (The Conner-Guy connection goes back to another current Guy Ranch resident, Hope Thompson, who lived with the Conner family for several years while attending McNeese State University in Lake Charles.) “When we packed up our clothes to leave, they were only expecting a Category-2 storm. We had no idea a Category 4 was coming. It took awhile to get word on how badly our place was hit. Then family started sending us pictures. Our house was totaled from the front side. The brick columns went through the front of the house, and a lot of the shingles on the roof were lost. We returned home to water damage and mold. The winds were so high from the hurricanes that we think tornadoes hit here, too. It’s crazy how one thing will look perfectly normal, when the thing that used to be right next to it is now gone. But losing our house and our barn was nothing next to Lake Charles looking like a war zone.” On the bright side, besides two twisted I-beams, their indoor arena is still standing. So Conner has been able to stay practiced up, which made this winning streak possible. The Conners are already working to replace the barn, and plan to rebuild their home on a different part of the property. On the foundation of hard work as a family, Josie and sorrel sidekick Tonka’s recent rodeo highlights reel includes the average win and reserve Cowboys Professional Rodeo Association year-end championship at the October 9-10 finals in Giddings, Texas, for about $4,000; the win at the Oklahoma’s Richest Open Breakaway Roping on October 17 at the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, Oklahoma, which was worth $11,500; and the cochampionship with Alex Flautt at last weekend’s inaugural San Angelo (Texas) Roping Fiesta Women’s Invitational Breakaway Roping for about $8,000. When the San Angelo Roping Fiesta committee got wind of the Conner family’s staggering losses at home, they generously offered $500 in travel money, which covered high school junior Josie’s entry fees. Including money she won there at the Cody Ohl junior ropings, the teen roping phenom left San Angelo about $13,000 richer. These recent windfall wins could not have happened at a better time for the Conner family, which are three huge-hearted members of the rodeo family. Jade Conner was recently called out on social media for his good deeds in helping young people he doesn’t even know at rodeo events. For those who don’t remember his rodeo history, Jade was a Top 15 tie-down roper riding into the regular-season finish line in 2003, the fall their only child was born. When Wendi had late-pregnancy issues, Jade pulled up and went home to be with her. He put his family first, and finished 17th 80
and just short of his only shot at a National Finals Rodeo back number. He never left his girls again. The first-ever Wrangler National Finals Breakaway Roping will be held December 8-10 at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, in conjunction with the 2020 NFR. Having just turned 17 on October 2, Josie is too young to be eligible to compete at the $200,000 NFBR. But two of her cowgirl heroes—Guy and Thompson—will be there. Guy and Thompson are also on the roster alongside Josie at the historic $750,000 Women’s Rodeo World Championship, which is right around the corner—November 8-12 at Will Rogers Coliseum in Fort Worth, with the top six in breakaway roping, team roping and barrel racing advancing to the performances at the 2020 Professional Bull Riders World Finals at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. The top four women on the World Champions Rodeo Alliance leaderboard in each event advance to the last-perf Main Event in Fort Worth, and Guy leads the lady headers, while JJ Hampton, Josie, Kelsie Chace and Thompson are ranked first through fourth in the breakaway roping, respectively. “2020 has been tough on everyone, including my family,” Josie said. “But so much good has come from the bad, and to see how our rodeo family has pitched in and pulled together after all the devastation down here has been amazing. A lot of history is happening right now. The WCRA has done wonders for the breakaway roping and all women in rodeo, and I’m thankful and proud to be a part of it.”
Coming Full Circle: A Look at the NFR Through the Years as it Returns to Texas for 2020
On the eve of the National Finals Rodeo coming to Texas, where it was first held in 1959, we take at look back the evolution of the "Super Bowl of Rodeo" — with help from rodeo greats such as Joe Beaver, Trevor Brazile, and Kaycee Feild.
The first NFR was held in 1959 in Dallas, where it remained until 1961. Los Angeles took over as host to the Finals, from 1962-1964, before it moved to Oklahoma City. OKC served as host through 1984, and from there, it moved to the CIty of Lights. Las Vegas has been of the National Finals Rodeo ever since, growing the event into more than just the grand finale of the PRCA season but also an extravaganza of shows, expos, and flashy parties in Vegas fashion. The NFR is now a bucket list event for rodeo fans and a meaningful milestone for the athletes, who dream from childhood of one day getting to nod their heads in those iconic yellow bucking chutes.

they considered taking her to the National Finals that year, but thought she might not be ready for the big stage In 2019, Jacob was out with an injury for three months, so Justin, Will and Cody Harmon rode Baby. She responded well, carrying the three men, plus Dixon, to the pay window several times, including big wins in Salinas, Calif. “People started asking where she came from,” Sam said. Now, in her second full year of rodeo competition, Dixon says she’s won over $130,000 in the last two years. Equine products are often overlooked for steer wrestling horses, Sam thinks. Some of the steer wrestlers are big men, and it’s not a natural movement for a horse when the wrestler hangs off the side. It can cause horses to have sore backs. “Here we are, hanging off the side of them, and that puts a major strain on their back. Ever since we’ve been using 5 Star pads, we’ve never had a problem.” Sam had a horse at home with back concerns, and he switched products. “I got a 5 Star pad and since then I’ve never had any back problems” with the horse. He has a few 5 Star saddle pads that he customized with certain neon colors that will be put into use at the 2020 National Finals, but they’re a surprise. “We’re waiting till the Finals to bust them out. When we do, they’ll be very noticeable.” He and his wife Allison’s kids: daughters Bailey, Hadlie and Reiny, use the boots, pads, and breast collars. “I’ve always believed that 5 Star (products) were above and beyond.” At the 2019 NFR, Baby came out of nowhere. She was the backup horse for Will, and when things weren’t clicking for him, he decided to ride her in the eighth round. Dixon and the guys were a bit worried; she had been seasoned, but they were concerned that she wasn’t quite ready. There was no need to worry. Will was3.6 seconds that round to win it, and he rode her in the ninth and tenth rounds, placing in the tenth.

USET Foundation Awards HallidaySharp with Jacqueline B. Mars National Competition & Training Grant
Jacqueline Mars The United States Equestrian Team Foundation has awarded the Jacqueline B. Mars National Competition & Training Grant to Liz Halliday-Sharp, and her mount, Cooley Quicksilver, a 9-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding owned by The Monster Partnership. As the recipient of the grant, Halliday-Sharp, who is an athlete on US Equestrian’s Eventing High Performance Pre-Elite Training List, will receive $10,000 to support her trip from Lexington, Kentucky, to Temecula, California, to compete in the CCI4*-L at the Galway Downs International Three-Day Event on October 2831, 2020. “It’s very, very exciting, and it makes a big difference to the A piece of fast food history was just served up in Santa Ynez, where a 554-acre ranch once owned by late McDonald’s owner Ray Kroc has listed for $29 million. Kroc bought the property for $600,000 in the 1960s, according to Curbed, and spent years turning the scenic land into a research and development facility and a vacation spot for himself and other McDonald’s executives. At the time, he dubbed the retreat “The J & R Double Arch Ranch,” which stood for Jane, his wife at the time, and Ray, himself. It’s an expensive sport, and you don’t get a lot of prize money. [This] really makes it all possible. “I think next year, we’ll start to think about five-star competition for [Cooley Quicksilver],” Halliday-Sharp continued. “I very much hope he’ll be considered for the Olympic Games, and that’s part of our reasoning for going to Galway.” Each year, the Jacqueline B. Mars Grant is awarded to eventing riders who have been identified and recommended by the USEF eventing selectors, with an impressive record and the potential to represent the United States in future international competition. Halliday-Sharp, who has not yet represented the U.S. at an Olympic Games or international championship, received this select
distinction following a strong performance as part of the 2019 FEI Eventing Nations Cup Team at the Military Boekelo CCIO4*-L (the Netherlands). According to Erik Duvander, US Equestrian’s Performance Director for eventing, it will be important for Cooley Quicksilver and Halliday-Sharp to receive the opportunity to produce a competitive performance, as the pair trend toward joining the Elite list. Thanks to the Jacqueline B. Mars Grant, Halliday-Sharp and Cooley Quicksilver can continue their training with the goal of representing the United States in future international competitions. Four eventing athletes have been awarded partial grants to provide financial support for their travel to CCI4*-L competitions in the fall of 2020. The recipients of the Land Rover/USEF National Competition Grants are: Boyd Martin (Cochranville, Pa.) and Luke 140, a 9-year-old

According to the listing agent, the property was purchased in 1990 by Nature’s Plus vitamin mogul Gerald Kessler. Kroc franchised his first McDonald’s restaurant in 1955 and eventually bought the original McDonald’s brothers out of the business six years later, rapidly expanding the fast food chain into an empire in the following decades. He also owned the San Diego Padres for a decade and had amassed a fortune of roughly $600 million by the time he died in 1984. Maria Temmel, Maurie McGuire and Scott Westlotorn of Coldwell Baner Realty hold the listing.

Sale manager Sarah Kieckhefer and Bret Davis of the K4 Ranch hold 4-year-old high seller Blaze N Glory Booger.
Despite the pandemic this year, the annual Legacy Ranch Horse Sale on Sept. 19 in Prescott, Ariz., attracted record crowds. A 4-year-old palomino roan sold to Straight A Cattle Company of Arizona for $27,500 and a 6-year-old sorrel gelding out of a National Finals Rodeo tie-down roping mare sold for $25,000.
The annual sale offers 35 head of proven ranch horses, many of which are also arena prospects and already team roping both ends, plus a few colts and broodmares. In 2020, geldings averaged $13,068 per head with mares bringing an average of $12,000. The sale was webcast on Visworks. com with photos and videos available on RanchHorseSale.com. Bids were taken in person, online and by telephone. The Legacy sale is a unique collaboration of three historic Arizona ranches. The K4 Ranch, Campwood Cattle Company, and Diamond A Ranch still operate on old traditions in northern Arizona’s roughest country. The horses they raise carry the brands of outfits with a collective 300-plus years of daily ranch work in vast, harsh

The high-selling horse was K4 Ranch’s 4-year-old gelding Blaze N Glory Booger, by Booger’s Cross Bell out of Driftin Strawberry. The Kieckhefer family began raising horses in the 1940s and run 3,000 mother cows on K4 holdings in California and southern Arizona. ProRodeo Hall-of-Famer Chuck Sheppard ran the program for decades, and the ranch stood Driftwood Ike for 17 years. The high seller boasts Cee Booger Red on both sides, and

his dam is a granddaughter of Orphan Drift. Cee Booger Red packs the mixture of Three Bars, Chicaro and Clabber. The K4 has also been breeding former AQHA Superhorse and Dual Pep son Popular Resortfigure to Driftwood mares. The second-high-selling horse, Boogersgonnabefamous, is a grandson of Popular Resortfigure out of the Cee Booger Red mare on whom Rick Kieckhefer roped calves on at the National Finals Rodeo. The McCraine family’s Campwood outfit includes the

And the Diamond A — the largest ranch in Arizona — combines Cholla Livestock with K4 holdings to run 6,000 head of mother cows. The Diamond A has 10 full-time cowboys and a remuda of 75 saddle horses, 30 broodmares and three stallions. Legacy sale horses carry the bloodlines of generations of horses with cow sense, intelligence, and athletic ability. Fittingly, the auction is annually held in conjunction with Olsen’s Arizona Equifest — a weekend of barrel racing and roping, vendor booths, entertainment, clinics, and demonstrations at Prescott Rodeo Grounds.

Farmers to Families Food Box Program Surpasses 100 Million Boxes Delivered
(Washington, D.C., September 29, 2020) – U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced today that more than 100 million food boxes have been distributed in support of American farmers and families affected by the COVID-19 pandemic through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Farmers to Families Food Box Program. Earlier this month, the Department announced it had entered into contracts with 50 entities for the third round of food box deliveries, which include contracts to purchase up to $1 billion authorized by President Donald J. Trump. “It is incredible to think that in a little more than five months, this food box program has gone from an idea to a reality that has provided more than 100 million boxes of nutritious foods to people in need and along the way has helped to keep farmers and ranchers in business and allowed Americans working in our nation’s food supply chain to get back to work,” said Secretary Perdue. “I have been meeting with food banks and recipients across the country and it’s been heartening to hear all the positive feedback on how the program has saved businesses and fed Americans in need. We are now into the third round of deliveries and we’re working harder than ever to continue to build on the success of the program.” “With 100 million Farmers to Families Food Boxes delivered, we have utilized critical funding authorized by President Trump to continue connecting our great American farmers to millions of food insecure families. I am proud of this Administration’s mission to keep our most vulnerable families fed and support American family farms in the process,” said Advisor to the President, Ivanka Trump. You may view the Farmers to Families Food Box Program video or click on the image below to watch a highlight video of USDA’s Farmers to Families Food Box Program in action across the United States:

In this third round of purchases, USDA is purchasing combination boxes to ensure all recipient organizations have access to fresh produce, dairy products, fluid milk and meat products. USDA has issued contracts to 50 entities for the third round of the USDA Farmers to Families Food Box Program in order to continue supplying nutritious foods to Americans in need and supporting farmers, ranchers and distributors in the food supply chain. These contract awards are a result of the third round of Farmers to Families Food Box program announced on July 24, 2020, and President Trump’s announcement on August 24 that up to an additional $1 billion was being made available for deliveries through October 31, 2020. A full list of approved suppliers will be posted on the Farmers to Families Food Box Program webpage. Coverage in this round of the program allocates food boxes to states based on the internal need of the state with the goal of providing coverage to entities in every county in the country. Eligibility for the third round was open to entities who could meet the government’s requirements and specifications and whose proposals illustrated coverage of opportunity zones and addressed costs incurred delivering product into the hands of recipients, among other factors. Fewer boxes will be delivered under this round due to the shift in combination boxes; however, the number of pounds of food being delivered is on par with previous rounds. USDA initially used basic ordering agreements (BOA) for this round to have greater flexibility to ensure contracted entities provide adequate coverage throughout the states and territories. A BOA is not a contract but is a written understanding, negotiated between USDA and a company establishing terms for future contracts during a specific period, and described what will be provided and how future orders will be priced, issued and delivered under the contract.

Gloria Crawford sits atop her horse,
a Morgan breed named Equinox Ebony Knight.
Horse & Rider, inducted into Dressage Foundation Century Club honoring senior horseback A 72-year-old Waterford woman and her 29-yearold horse have been inducted into a national club that honors senior horseback riders.
Gloria Crawford and her horse, a Morgan breed named Equinox Ebony Knight, will join 430 other riders across the nation as members of the The Dressage Foundation's Century Club. To become a member, the ages of the rider and their horse must total 100-years or more and they must compete in a dressage test. Dressage is a specific type of horseback riding competition in which the rider performs a set of predetermined maneuvers.
Crawford, a retired legal secretary, has been in love with horses ever since she was a child, she said. But it wasn’t until the age of 52 that she was able to carry out the lifelong dream of owning one. “I was the little girl who played with horse figurines instead of dolls, and whenever we would pass a horse in a field driving, I would have to stop and watch,” Crawford said. “At 52-years-old, I found myself wondering if I was too old for this. And then I thought, if I don't grab this chance while I can, I’ll regret it the rest of my life.” Crawford rides about two to three times a week, having had both knees replaced in order to keep up the sport into her 70s. She continues to take lessons with Ebony, who she said is still enjoying learning new tricks and maneuvers in his golden years. “It’s a pretty big deal to be inducted into the Century Club,” Kim Robbins, equestrian enrichment trainer at Meadowland Farm in Davison, where Ebony is stabled, said. “The horse has to be pretty old and it says a lot about the people taking care of those horses to get them to that age to show and compete still.” and “It’s really exciting (to be inducted), I never thought I would have a horse, let alone be of an age to ride one in the Century Club and to ride a horse I’ve known all these years,” Crawford said.
