Robert Redford, Bruce Springsteen Team for Documentary ‘The Mustangs: America’s Wild Horses’

"The Mustangs: An American Story" takes audiences on an odyssey throughout America to places few people have seen or even know about. There are more than 80,000 wild horses on our federal lands and more than 50,000 in holding facilities. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Philipps says, "The wild horse is so ingrained in the American imagination that even for those who have never seen one know what it stands for: fierce independence, unbridled freedom, the bedrock ideals of the nation. From car ads to high school mascots, the wild horse - popularly known as the mustang - is the enduring icon of America. But in modern times it has become entangled in controversy and bureaucracy, and now its future is in question." Whether you are a horse person or not, this film will make you fall in love with America all over again. “The Mustangs: America’s Wild Horses” tells the story about America’s wild horses from their turbulent history to their uncertain future. The feature-length documentary takes audiences on an odyssey throughout America to places that few people have seen, with more than 80,000 wild horses on public lands and more than 50,000 in government corrals. The film, which has been acquired by Virgil Films, will be released theatrically on Oct. 15, then followed by a TVOD release. Redford is an executive producer, and Springsteen contributes to the film’s soundtrack, which also features music from Willie Nelson and Emmylou Harris, 16

and the original song “Never Gonna Tame You,” performed by Blanco Brown and written by 12-time Oscar-nominated songwriter Diane Warren, who also serves as a co-producer on the film. “America’s wild horses are fighting their last stand,” said Redford. “Increasing competition for our natural resources threatens our wilderness areas, our wild horses and other wildlife

species. Horses are interwoven into the very fabric of what is America. What threatens them threatens us all.” One of the film’s prominent storylines focuses on mustangs being paired with veterans with PTSD, as the doc highlights the work of Operation Wild Horse. Penske Media Corporation’s Vice Chairman, Gerry Byrne, who is a Marine Corps Vietnam Veteran and prominent

OCTOBER 2021

veterans’ activist, applauds the film, stating: “‘The Mustangs’ highlights the importance of addressing the pressures of PTSD and the ‘hidden wounds of war’. I commend the film for showcasing the work of veterans who are making a difference.” The deal to acquire the film’s worldwide rights was made by Virgil President Joe Amodei and the film’s codirector and producer Steven Latham, who co-directed with Conrad Stanley and produced via his Steven Latham Productions. (Latham is repped by Molly Fenton at Cohen & Gardner). Springsteen’s wife and daughter, Patti Scialfa Springsteen, and USA Olympic equestrian silver medalist, Jessica Springsteen, are executive producers. Cinematography is by Brian Pratt. “As we constantly look to the need to protect our planet and it’s habitants it goes without saying that the wild Mustang who roam free should be a part of that effort,” says Virgil’s Amodei. “This beautifully shot film brings the story home like no other.” Latham adds, “America’s wild horses represent freedom, strength and resilience. This film takes audiences on an exciting journey; a journey that we as filmmakers went on, to understand the challenges the Mustang faces to thrive in a changing world.” “The Mustangs: America’s Wild Horses” will be released theatrically in October, and then launched on TVOD in late November. Next month, the film is premiering at the Newport Beach Film Festival, the Heartland International Film Festival, the Edmonton International Film Festival and Film Fest 919.

NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity® Open Finalist Field Expands in 2021

The 2021 National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity® will be the largest entry field for the 3-year-old event in recent history, and with those added numbers comes an increase in the cap on the total number of finalists brought back in the Open division. As of August 1, there are 300 Open entries in the premier 3-year-old event in the Western performance horse industry. In 2019, the field hit a decade-high of 274 entries. The event will be held again in Fort Worth, Texas, October 7 through 23, and will also feature an increase in the number of Finalist horse and rider teams showing under the lights in the Will Rogers Coliseum. “The Board is in tune with the changes we are experiencing as our events grow, and they feel the way we approach our finals should be responsive to that growth, too,” said Anna Morrison, NRCHA executive director. “When discussing changes to the finalist structure for the 2022 Derbies and Snaffle Bit Futurity®, it became clear that the time to make the change for the Futurity was now.” The NRCHA Board of Directors voted to increase the finalist cap to 30 in the Open, Intermediate Open and Limited Open

26

divisions at this year’s Snaffle Bit Futurity. There will be a maximum of 30 finalist contestants, plus ties, showing in the Finals, which are scheduled to run October 21-23. All other aspects of the Snaffle Bit Futurity finalist calculation detailed in the NRCHA Rule Book, rule 10.6.4, will remain the same. “We’re pleased to be able to recognize additional horses in the finals, and even happier to say that despite the change happening so late in the season the Board is able to commit that 2630th place in the Open Finals will receive a $5,000 payout,” explained Morrison. Adding horse and rider pairs to the Finals will only increase the thrill of watching the best in the reined cow horse industry compete. The NRCHA membership has increased in 2021, reflecting in increased entries at all premier NRCHA events: 15% at the NRCHA Stallion Stakes and 20% at the DT Horses Western Derby and 33% at the Dom Conicelli Memorial Eastern Derby, presented by MARS Equestrian™. Tickets for the 2021 event will go on sale in September. Visit www.NRCHA.com to access information.

‘Cry Macho’ Star Clint Eastwood Admits to Being Nervous About Riding Horses in New Movie

Clint Eastwood’s Cry Macho debuted Sept. 17, marking the Eastwood’s first western movie since 1992’s Unforgiven. Eastwood directed the movie in addition to starring in it. And it’s all about a former rodeo star who tries to reunite a boy and his father. Naturally, the plot involves horses. And the 91-year-old star admitted riding a horse in Cry Macho caused some nerves on set. Not only because of his age, but also because Eastwood’s horse riding is a little rusty: he hasn’t been on a horse since filming Unforgiven three decades ago.

Clint Eastwood’s ‘Cry Macho’ has been decades in the making Cry Macho has been decades in the making. The western is based on a 1975 N. Richard Nash novel of the same name. And producer Al Ruddy approached Eastwood to develop it into a film in 1988. But the actor/director turned down starring in it. “I’m too young for this,” Eastwood told the Los Angeles Times of his reaction to Ruddy’s pitch. “Let me direct and we’ll get Robert Mitchum, an older dude.” Eastwood’s idea to direct Cry Macho with Mitchum as the star didn’t pan out. And over the years, the movie was almost made by a few other filmmakers. Arnold Schwarzenegger was also interested in starring in it, before and after he served as governor of California. But Cry Macho didn’t come to fruition until Eastwood was old enough to star as Mike Milo. Eastwood said he always tried to come back to the story over the years until it finally worked out. “I always thought I’d go back and look at that. It was something I had to grow into,” he said. “One day, I just felt it was time to revisit it. It’s fun when something’s your age, when you don’t have to work at being older.” Cry Macho was filmed during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. This posed new challenges for the Hollywood veteran. Outside of keeping the set COVID safe, Eastwood also had to tackle doing his own stunts. He’s 91, so there aren’t many. But 34

he still performed them nonetheless. In one Cry Macho scene, Eastwood punches someone. And he threw that punch himself. “It might not be as good as I’ve thrown in the past but it was fun to do it,” he said. And then, there was the horses. A former rodeo star needs to look visibly comfortable on horseback. Eastwood said there were nerves on set the day he got back in the saddle. “The wrangler was worried,” he said. “She was saying, ‘Be careful, be careful now.’ She was scared I’d end up on my rear end. But if you treat the horse like a buddy, he’ll take care of you.” “I never thought of acting as an intellectual sport,” he said. “You don’t want to overthink something. You want it to be emotional.” “If you think about it too much, you can take it apart to the point where you don’t like it anymore,” Eastwood added. “If you think about it four different ways, you forget what dragged you into it in the first place. It’s like somebody throwing a fast pitch across the plate. Just swing at it, step in, and go.”

Dwight Yokum

Cry Macho. – Clint Eastwood stars as a onetime rodeo star and washed-up horse breeder, in 1978, takes a job from an ex-boss, played by Dwight Yokum, to bring the man's young son home and away from his alcoholic mum. Crossing rural Mexico on their back way to Texas, the unlikely pair faces an unexpectedly challenging journey, during which the world-weary horseman may find his own sense of redemption through teaching the boy what it means to be a good man. THE SOUL OF A MAN may or may not be his story; it is, however, his soul. In an eight-part docudrama in print, Jim attempts to redeem himself with the God of his youth. As he reunites with him, together they weave an entertaining, thought-provoking, intriguing, and heart-wrenching tale filled with emotion, pain, love, hate, anger, guilt, and regret. Challenging both fact and fiction, each battling for supremacy. All with one goal in mind: to help all those less fortunate children of the world, not only to survive but to thrive in the world God has chosen to place them. Jim hopes to accomplish this goal by using the proceeds from this docudrama to provide the means and guidance to these children’s caregivers and heartbroken parents. Praying that they may find peace and happiness in their own lives while willingly accepting the task that God has assigned to them. Ever hopeful that the journey helps him find some semblance of peace in his own restless soul. Wanting to believe that maybe, just maybe . . .

NETFLIX’s How to Be a Cowboy Dale Brisby is the star of the show. He describes himself as a “legendary bull riding gypsy”.

On September 1st, Netflix released How to Be a Cowboy Season 1, a series on real-life cowboys in the United States. Someone who is acquainted with the cowboy culture only through Western cinema, it comes as a shock to see that there are people out there whose profession is a cowboy. The six-episode series is based on Dale Brisby, who owns a ranch in Texas. He works along with his brother Leroy and friend, Cheech. Dale also has employed interns Donnie and Jorden and teach them how to be a cowboy and a cowgirl.

The first thing that comes to mind while watching this show is that how cool it is to be a cowboy. But then the next thing you think is that it is equally tough to be one. Watching people fall off from the back of the bull or a horse will make you nervous as if it is your turn next. As each episode of How to Be a Cowboy Season 1 passes, the more you want to watch what happens next. It begins with us being introduced to Dale and his comrades. Just like it takes a village to raise a child, it also takes several people to run a ranch. How to Be a Cowboy Season 1 transmits the message of how hard it is to own a ranch, be a cowboy and teach others how to become one. This can be best understood by Dale handling the maverick bull, which gets auctioned off later. Meanwhile, Dale also runs his business and has a social media presence, which makes it all more interesting. In one of the episodes, Dale rides an ‘Aqua Bull’, a term given by Cheech to a fake bull ridden on water. As How to Be a Cowboy Season 1 moves forward, even the viewers get to learn different terminology and words used in the cowboy world. For example, there are three ways to throw a rope on a bull. The first one is called a head loop, the second is a heel shot, and the third is a Houlihan. We see Leroy practice throwing ropes while he and Dale prepare for a cowboy challenge. It is quite interesting to see Netflix delving into a more diverse form of entertainment. Rather than producing the same old fictional 36

Leroy Gibbons is another cast member of ‘How to be a Cowboy’ and is in fact Dale Brisby’s brother. He is a rancher, recording artist, and countryman through and through. Unlike his brother, Leroy has a subtle sense of humour and seems to be quite reserved, but aside from this their goals regarding the future of cowboys align perfectly. shows or films, the streaming company has started to create a lot more docudramas. Such series are informative, entertaining and at the same time uses real-life people who are experts in their field. Moreover, How to Be a Cowboy Season 1 is extremely fun to watch. The continuous banter between Dale, Leroy and Cheech is hilarious. But they are all supportive of each other and Donnie and Jorden. The best part about the series (at least for me) was watching Jorden conquer a space that is filled with men. We can see the tremendous growth in Jorden, from the first time she rides a bull on-screen till the end. Dale and Leroy’s sister Dancey comes in like a storm and steals your heart right away. Honestly, I am a fan of her, even though, I don’t know anything about being a cowgirl. Another thing that you can appreciate is that every single person is hardworking and willing to become better and better in what they do, especially Donnie. He might also remind you of Clint Eastwood at times with that rugged cowboy style. From the bulls to the horses and the fancy saddles, cowboy hats, belts, boots and vests, everything about How to Be a Cowboy Season 1 is exactly how you would expect it to be. Yet, it is full of surprises. This Netflix series is absolutely worth the watch and even a great show for binge-watching.

MARECELO GUZMAN INTERVIEW

Q - You have announced a new offering called “The No Bucking Program” for colt starting. In Western and English Performance training, how does this serve the horse? A - The no bucking program is my signature way to start horses in a safe and humane way that prevents bucking and bad habits from the ground up, using the best of English and Western. I believe that we always need to reward the horse when they are doing right but also identify the little attitudes that could eventually turn in to a bad habit and put ourselves in danger. I spend a lot of time teaching my horses on the lead line and working in open spaces developing the horses mind and body, getting them used to other horses and objects before I even try to put a saddle on. This way we prevent the horses from learning to buck from the ground and this nobucking from the ground is the key to no-bucking when riding. Green horses are like a blank page where we start to write the guidelines for the rest of their lives. Colt starting is like preschool for humans, that’s why I like to start horses when they are young between 2 and 3 years old. The NO BUCKING PROGRAM focuses in ground manners, forward motion, rhythm, contact and acceptance of the aids, impulsion and straightness which are the basic skills that makes a horse collected in the long term. Q - How does this help the rider or owner? A - Our highest goal is to have sound and happy horses that will make their owners happy allowing them to enjoy well behaved and safe horses. A horse started under our program will help the owners save money in vet bills and even in human doctor bills! A horse that is well started will reduce the chances of accidents when handling them from the ground and will promote the safety under the saddle. When another professional or nonprofessional sends us a 2yo or 3yo, they will save a lot of effort, time and patience. A green untouched horse that graduates from our colt starting program will be a horse that’s ready to start his sport career, a horse that is ready for ‘’university’’ and prepared to be taken in any direction. Q - Is a “No Buck” technique safer for the horse and rider? A - Of course it is! Most horses that have been allowed to buck when young will keep bucking for the rest of their lives putting in 42

danger the rider’s life along with their own lives. Our “No-bucking” program consists in teaching the horse not to buck and most importantly in the safe and gentle way that our horses can be handled from the ground making a big difference on the owner’s safety reflecting also on the relationship they will have with their horses once they ride him. Q - Why is this program important? A - This program is very important to us not just because we take care of our horse’s and their owner’s safety, but also because since I love to start the horses myself, I want to make sure that they don’t buck because I can’t risk getting hurt. Most colt starters are young and unexperienced riders that haven’t finished they’re riding learning process, they are still green under the saddle, unbalanced physically and emotionally and are afraid to allow the forward motion on the horse to happen which effects tremendously on the horse’s rhythm, contact and control. The riders that make it to certain level call themselves trainers and don’t want to start horses anymore putting unexperienced riders on unexperienced horses creating a unvirtuous circle that decreases the chances of having a safe and well trained horse that can express their full potential in a safe way. The No Bucking Program allows the horse to express its full potential under the saddle of a professional that has been starting horses since 2002 and showing horses in 3 continents, which ensures that the first rides will be done in the right way. This shortens the process of learning and allows the horse to show its full potential without learning bad habits. Q - Where do you train out of? A - We train at Four Peaks Ranch, right on the corner of Rio Verde Dr with 160th St. in Scottsdale AZ. Q - Tell us about the location and facilityA - The ranch is right beside the main road and has an amazing and breathtaking view to the mountains. Our barn is insulated, has a misting system and fans for the summer as well as big turn outs. The boarding has high quality alfalfa and bedding, horses get cleaned twice a day and the staff is very friendly and professional. We do night checks and make sure that our horses are always happy and comfortable.

Miller Wins ProRodeo Tour Finale

Punches Ticket to Las Vegas Looking from the outside in on the final weekend of the 2021 rodeo season, many might have been inclined to think WPRA World Champion Nellie Miller would be a nervous wreck knowing it all came down to her success at the ProRodeo Tour Finale at California Rodeo Salinas. After all, she entered the weekend just $29 out of the Top 15, but as a true champion, she wasn’t nervous but confident.

“We started at the beginning of the year wanting to get there after they announced it would be in Salinas,” Miller, of Cottonwood, California, said regarding the new Tour Finale location. “I knew I wanted to try to make it there. I got a late start to the season, so I thought at the end of the year that would come in handy, and it definitely worked out that way.” Yes it did. It is always good to have an ace in the hole when trying to make it to Las Vegas for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. For Miller, she actually had two aces in the hole for the weekend: one being her horse, Rafter W Minnie Reba “Sister” and the other being her familiarity with the setup at Salinas. “It definitely helps. When you have that much experience in an arena, I feel like it just helps when you are under a pressure situation,” said the 2017 world titlist. “I had a lot of confidence in my horse, as I knew she would do well there, and it was peace of mind to be in an arena I am Nellie Miller so comfortable with.” Photo by Fernando Sam-Sin Miller and Sister rounded the cloverleaf pattern during the first performance, stopping the clock in a time of 16.42 seconds, a round won by Katie Jo Halbert in 16.16. Miller finished fourth, good for $1,260. She and Sister sped things up in the second round, stopping the clock in a rodeo-best 16.03-second run, outdistancing two-time WPRA World Champion and past Salinas champion Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi by 3-100ths of a second. Miller added another $2,070 for that run. “I was up the first night, and I think the first crack out of the hat you are just trying to get a feel for it again. (On) the second run, she had a day off in between and was just really feeling good, plus she had one run under her belt there already,” Miller said about the lightning quick time in the second round. “I feel she just gets stronger with every run and she really did that night. It was a lot of fun.” 44

Miller easily advanced to the semifinal round, finishing second in the average with a two-run time of 32.45, again behind Halbert with a 32.39. Miller added another $1,800 to her standings. Miller – who is very familiar with the sudden-death formats in ProRodeo having won the Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo in 2020 as well as RodeoHouston in 2018 and 2019 – had positioned herself and Sister for a big day during the finals on Sunday in Salinas. “She is so confident herself that it helps me be confident in her,” said Miller about her 13-year-old blue roan mare. “I have had a lot of success with the back-to-back, showdown-type formats, and I am pretty comfortable with that at this point as we have done it a number of times. You know your horse and what she is capable of, and I just had a lot of confidence going into that final round.” The duo didn’t disappoint, finishing third in the semifinal round in a time of 16.29 seconds, good for $2,771; they were behind Cheyenne Wimberley and Steely Steiner, who posted identical times of 16.20. With one run left, Miller and Sister again brought their A-game, stopping the clock in 16.15 seconds outrunning Wimberley by 3-100ths. “The format in Salinas as the Tour Finale definitely mattered to me,” said Miller, the mother of two daughters. “In years past when I made the Tour Finale and it was in Puyallup (Washington), I don’t think I ever won a check there, so when they announced it would be in Salinas, I was jumping for joy. I just knew my horse would like it there and I had a good chance of doing well there. It is always a relief when it is somewhere that you feel that good about.” Not only did Miller win the barrel racing title in Salinas for the second time in her career, but she also picked up another $10,000 bringing her weekend haul to $17,901. Not only did she move inside the top 15, she shot all the way to No. 8 in the world with a shot at another world title. “When I won it in 2016, that was our first big win ever,” Miller said of her start with Sister in Salinas. “So it was exciting to be in that position and exciting for different reasons this year. I always think the Salinas win in 2016 is what started it all for me. It got the ball rolling for Sister and I as it was one of our first big wins together. “I think it just shows how consistent she is and how consistent she has stayed over the last five or six years. I didn’t necessarily think I would still be running her, but she has just held up so well and she takes care of herself. She just keeps coming back strong, so as long as she feels good it makes my job easy.”

Derrick Begay Headed to the NFR

Cory Petska misses NFR

after Win with Derrick Begay in Salinas SALINAS, Calif. – Any chance team roping heeler Cory Petska had of making the 2021 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo hinged on his run Saturday. Petska and his partner/header Derrick Begay had to win the second round of the ProRodeo Rodeo Tour Finale at California Rodeo Salinas. 50

Petska entered the ProRodeo Tour Finale 16th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $56,148. He trailed Caleb Hendrix, who is in the No. 15 spot in the world standings, by $1,652. Petska and Begay won the round and they earned $2,300 each for their victory. Begay entered the ProRodeo Tour Finale 11th in the world standings with $68,593. “I had to win Saturday and I just wanted to make sure I made a good catch,” Petska said. “I wanted to win some money and just do the best job I could. I wasn’t worried about the NFR. If I make it, I make it if I don’t, I don’t.”

“This was a huge win today,” Begay said. “We just went out there and made our run and now it is out of our hands. We did all we could. Our year ended today.” Unfortunately for Begay and Petska, Petska roped a leg in the first round Thursday, which knocked them out of semifinal consideration. In Salinas, Petska was riding Raymond, a horse he borrowed from his uncle team roping heeler Monty Joe Petska, a 14-time NFR qualifier (1985-86, 1988-92, 1996-97, 1999-2001, 2003-2004). “I rode that horse a few years ago and won Hermiston, Ore., on him,” Cory said. “From

OCTOBER 2021

Pendleton (Ore.) I drove home to Bancroft, Wis., because we are shipping cattle. I wasn’t going to drive from Wisconsin to Salinas and my uncle only lives 60 miles from Salinas. I was mad at myself that I roped a leg in the first round. I should be in a better position than I am. The situation that I was in at least I came through and did my job.” Petska has qualified for the NFR 15 times (2003-11, 201318), highlighted by him winning the PRCA Team Roping Heeler World Championship in 2017 with header Erich Rogers. “We did what we had to do, and we will see how it goes,” said Begay about qualifying for the NFR with Petska.

Last PBR World Finals in Las Vegas

PBR (Professional Bull Riders) today announced that bull riding’s most prestigious event, the PBR World Finals, will move to Fort Worth, Texas, and Dickies Arena starting in 2022 as part of a comprehensive schedule restructure for its premier series. The new PBR Unleash The Beast regular season will span from JanuaryMay, culminating with a seven-day championship festival, spanning two weekends of bull riding and fan activities, in Fort Worth. The changes will go into effect immediately after the 2021 PBR World Finals which will conclude the current season in Las Vegas, Nevada, at T-Mobile Arena Nov. 3-7.

“We were excited to host the 2020 PBR World Finals in Texas, and we are proud to now welcome the most intense bull riding competition with the most engaged fans back to the Lone Star State in the 2022 season," said Governor Greg Abbott. "Fort Worth is the Modern West, and there is no better place for the PBR World Finals to call their new long-term home. I congratulate the PBR, the City of Fort Worth, and Mayor Mattie Parker on this world champion partnership that will showcase Texas as the premier sports-entertainment destination, spur continuing tourism and travel, and bring new jobs to Fort Worth and beyond." "This has been an incredible team effort with PBR, Governor Abbott, our Fort Worth Sports Commission and so many others,” Mayor Mattie Parker said. “Fort Worth is the gold standard for public-private partnerships and we are marshaling all our resources to roll out the red carpet for the PBR World Finals." “This is a historic win for Fort Worth. Powered by Dickies Arena and a community committed to hospitality, we are excited to announce this latest, significant sports event for our city. Welcoming the PBR World Finals beginning in 2022 shows how Fort Worth is attracting the most exciting and important events in professional sports,” said Jason Sands, director of the Fort Worth Sports Commission, a division of Visit Fort Worth. This year the Sports Commission welcomed more than 40 events worth more than $100 million in economic impact. “These landmark changes give the PBR season greater continuity and allow the league to hold our crown jewel, the World Finals, in the heart of cowboy country surrounded by exciting fan entertainment activities,” said Sean Gleason, PBR CEO and Commissioner. “PBR World Finals will now have a two-week presence throughout Fort Worth, making the Metroplex the mustvisit, sports-entertainment destination, every May. We are ecstatic to work with our incredible partners in Fort Worth, as we usher in a 58

new era adding to the rich history of our World Finals and continue to bring new programming to Fort Worth. We look forward to the many opportunities to grow the PBR World Finals and sport as a whole here in Texas.” The schedule changes follow PBR’s announcement in June of a landmark joint venture with Stockyards Heritage Development Co. and ASM Global to bring dozens of annual new western sports, music and entertainment events to Cowtown Coliseum and the historic Stockyards District. The inaugural PBR World Finals in Fort Worth will be held from May 13-22, 2022 at Dickies Arena, headlining an action-packed two weeks of activities across Fort Worth. Harkening back to a past format of the World Finals, reminiscent of when the yearend event was split between Mandalay Bay and Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, the first three rounds of the 2022 PBR World Finals will be held May 13-15, with the final five rounds held from May 19-22. “Dickies Arena is proud to welcome the World Finals to Texas and celebrate 30 years of PBR in our new state-of-the-art facility. We are excited to host PBR in another national capacity and look forward to showcasing the city of Fort Worth to PBR fans from across North America,” said Matt Homan, president and general manager of Dickies Arena. In addition to Dickies Arena, the league will also bring World Finals-related events and programming to Cowtown Coliseum, Fort Worth Convention Center and the Will Rogers Complex in Fort Worth, and the flagship PBR Bar at Texas Live!, boasting a 7,000 square-foot balcony overlooking Arlington Backyard, one of the region’s top concert venues, in nearby Arlington. PBR has held its annual championship in Las Vegas since the sport was founded, with the exception of 2020 when the World Finals were held in Arlington, Texas due to the ongoing COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. The PBR will continue to visit Las Vegas with significant, to be announced events. “We would like to thank the City of Las Vegas for being such an incredible host to the PBR World Finals for nearly three decades,” said Gleason. “While we are excited about the move to Texas, Las Vegas will continue to hold marquee PBR events, which will be announced in the coming months.” The 2022 PBR season will now span January-May, with subsequent seasons starting in 2023 lasting from November-May. The 2022 campaign will include a minimum of 20 elite Unleash The Beast events, stopping in stalwart venues in cities such as Madison Square Garden in New York City, STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, Paycom Center in Oklahoma City and MetraPark in Billings, Montana. Ticketing information for the 2022 PBR World Finals in Fort Worth and regular season Unleash The Beast events, in addition to a complete season schedule, will be announced in the coming weeks.

Statement from Maricopa County Supervisor Steve Chucri It’s hard to believe I have been involved in Arizona politics now for 28 years. When I first ran for Maricopa County Supervisor in 2012, I campaigned to bring civility, innovation and most importantly, a business mindset to government making it “Best in Class”. We got off to a wonderful start and have had many successes. Successes that I will always be proud to have played a role in.

Unfortunately, the political landscape changed for the worst this year. The environment is wrought with toxicity - and all civility and decorum no longer seem to have a place. The fixation with the 2020 election results and aftermath have Steve Chucri gotten out of control. In recent days it has come to light that I was secretly recorded in conversations regarding differences with some of my colleagues about an audit of the 2020 election. The comments I made were during a very turbulent time. My colleagues have every right to be both angry and disappointed with me. I should not have made such statements and offer my colleagues heartfelt apologies. I do not want to perpetuate the very problem I ran to eliminate several years ago. While I have had my differences with my colleagues, I have known them to be good, honorable and ethical men. The picture some individuals are trying to paint about a cover-up, scam and other nonsense about my colleagues and myself is simply false. There was no cover-up, the election was not stolen. Biden won. While my comments were critical, it doesn’t change the fact I have had the pleasure and honor to serve with these fine men and the dedicated employees of Maricopa County. It has also been my honor to represent my District 2 constituents for 9 years. It is time for me to step aside and let the County and my colleagues meet the true potential of being the 4th largest and fastest growing County in America. Effective November 5, 2021 I will resign my office. Sincerely, Steve Chucri, District 2 Maricopa County Board of Supervisors www.maricopa.gov/steve

2021 NRHA Futurity & Adequan® North American Affiliate Championships November 25 - December 4 Andrea Fappani’s victory at the 2020 National Reining Horse Association Futurity on All Bettss Are Off was more than memorable; it was historic. Dedication and generosity from a committed group of NRHA members determined to raise the stakes at the world’s biggest reining resulted in the

$250,000 WINNER largest championship payments in the event’s history. Not only did the Open Level 4 Champion receive $250,000, the CINCH Non Pro Champion took home $60,000, and added money for

the Adequan® North American Affiliate Championships was doubled. Because the Futurity Challenge investors have pledged a five-year

Andrea Fappani

commitment, the Level 4 Open Champion payout is ensured to not decrease over that time. “The members of the Task Force aspire to enhance participation at all levels of reining by building the NRHA Futurity and Adequan® NAAC to the show of a lifetime,” Clark concluded. The guaranteed payouts in the MS Diamonds TX Level 4 Open Finals have been further expanded. In 2021, the Level 4 Open Reserve Champion will take home $150,000, while the third-place winner will receive a check for $100,000. There will also be substantial increases in the payout for fourth through tenth places in the Level 4 Open Finals. Those boosts, as well as the doubled added money for Adequan® NAACs and the secured $60,000 for the L4 Non Pro Champion that will continue in 2021, are funded by NRHA’s monetary commitment. The Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Gelding Incentive receives added-money support from Adequan® to reward those 3-year-old geldings entered in the Futurity and the versatile Stock Horse of Texas association aligns with the NRCHA to benefit both groups of members.

Supporting the reined cow horse industry through growth in purses as well as growth in all member groups is one of the cornerstones of NRCHA’s mission. To that end, the association and the Stock Horse of Texas agreed on an alliance to support each other’s member bases. The Stock Horse of Texas (SHTX) caters to versatile competitors with a focus on fundamental cow work. It began as a grassroots organization that now includes affiliate groups in multiple states and members that reach across the country. Together, the NRCHA and SHTX pledged to work together to develop programs to attract enthusiasts to compete in reined cow horse. 70

“Stock Horse of Texas is excited to partner with NRCHA. There are some members that show in both associations and we are excited to watch the growth in the Western performance industry through this alliance,” said Jill Dunkel, SHTX executive director. “Ranching and cow horse go hand-in-hand, and our membership has a solid footing in both. The NRCHA and SHTX complement each other and we can’t wait to see where this partnership goes in the future.” SHTX will work to align with NRCHA’s Rule Book in order to allow concurrent class entry at events. Competitor cross-over between associations will be highlighted when SHTX World Champions are invited to the NRCHA Celebration of Champions. At the 2021 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity, presented by Metallic Cat, the Open Gelding Incentive will receive support from Adequan, an American Regent company. Adequan is pledging $7,500 in added money. This Gelding-only incentive kicked off in 2020. The gelding must be registered with its breed association as a gelding in order to qualify. For more than 30 years, Adequanhas been administered by veterinarians to help horses of every discipline and level. For more information on entering the Gelding Incentive, contact the NRCHA.

NRHA Our Condolences—

Peter Phinny

NRHA is saddened to learn of the passing of Peter Phinny on August 13, 2021. We send condolences to his family and friends. With a love of horses sparked in childhood, nothing pleased Peter more than to be with his own, especially Mr Melody Jac, Brennas Kid and Bootlegger—three of several reining horses that inspired him to write “Training the Reined Horse.” This book, published in 1977, represents a combination of his two passions—writing and western horses. . The family has designated

Peter Phinny the Reining Horse Foundation for gifts in Peter’s memory.

Wrangler National Finals Rodeo Payout Record $13.3 million

The ProRodeo Cowboys Association® and Las Vegas Events announced today that the 2021 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo will see an increase in the payout at the world’s largest rodeo in December. The Wrangler NFR, which returns to the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas Dec. 2-11, will have a record-setting competition payout of $10,257,048. This amount includes guaranteed prize money of $1.2 million for all NFR qualifiers and $9,057,048 in competition prize money.

Between 2015 and 2020, the NFR paid out a total of $10 million – $8.8 million in competition prize money and $1.2 million in guaranteed prize money to qualifiers. The increase will see round winners take home $26,997 per round and average winners earn $69,234. Each go-round will pay a total of $87,087, while the average total will pay $261,261 per event. The stock contractor pay – which is 30% of the contestant payout – is increased to $3,077,114. Known as the richest and most prestigious rodeo in the world, the Wrangler NFR attracts the top 15 contestants in bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing and bull riding to compete for a share of the increased purse and the coveted PRCA Gold Buckle. In 2019, the event had a total attendance of 168,289 over the 10 days of competition at the Thomas & Mack Center and has sold out more than 330 consecutive performances in Las Vegas. Jr. NFR Canceled for 2022 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (September 21, 2021) – The PRCA’s Jr. NFR will not be held in 2022. This announcement was made by the PRCA as part of a sweeping decision to not offer Jr. Rodeo memberships or future Jr. NFR qualifiers after the conclusion of the 2021 season.

U.S. Jumping Teams Finishes FEI Jumping Nations Cup™ Youth Final with and Gold Medal for U.S. Junior Team

Kronenberg, The Netherlands – The U.S. Jumping Team fielded two teams at the FEI Jumping Nations Cup™ Youth Final in Kronenberg, the Netherlands, with both junior and young rider athletes experiencing international team competition in a championship atmosphere. The U.S. Junior Jumping Team took top honors, earning team gold in the FEI Jumping Nations Cup CSIOJ competition, while the U.S. Young Rider Jumping Team took sixth in the FEI Jumping Nations Cup CSIOY competition. Both teams were led by Chef d’Equipe Anne Kursinski.

Competition began with a qualification round on Wednesday, September 22, for both teams, with the junior team jumping at 1.40m height and the young riders contesting a 1.45m track. The U.S. Junior Jumping Team qualified for the second and final round of competition in third place in CSIOJ team competition, with strong performances from Viriginia Bonnie (Upperville, Va.) and Efodea, an 11-yearold KWPN mare owned by Nina Bonnie, Ansgar Holtgers Jr. (Wellington, Fla.) and Elina, and a 12-year-old KPWN mare owned by Gut Einhaus, LLC, Caroline Mawhinney (Woodside, Calif.) and Stella Levista, her own 13-year-old Hanoverian mare, and Zayna Rizvi (Wellington, Fla.) and Excellent, an 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Peacock Ridge LLC. The team finished on a total score of four but would begin with a clean slate of zero for the second round of competition on Saturday. The U.S. Young Rider Team also qualified for the second round of competition in the CSIOY, finishing in sixth place after the first day. The team of Tali Dejong (Golden, Colo.) and Heavenly Star, her nine-year-old KWPN mare, Riley Delbecq (Duck Key, Fla.) and Julesraimus de Barisy, her own 12-year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding, Mimi Gochman (New York, N.Y.) and Celina BH, an 11-year-old Holsteiner mare owned by Gochman Sport Horses, and Caelinn Leahy (Maple Park, Ill.) and Cold Play 31, a 12-year-old Westphalian gelding owned by Steven Schaefer, each had highlights in their rounds. The U.S. Junior Jumping Team returned for the second round on Saturday, September 25, in firing fashion, with Mawhinney and Bonnie both securing clear rounds for the team and Holtgers Jr. and Rizvi only adding four faults to their individual scores. Dropping one of the four-fault tallies, the team finished the competition on final team score of four, securing a first-place finish. Spain took second place with a total score of five, with Belgium earning the bronze, also with a total score of five. Of their podium success, Kursinski commented noted that the team’s performance and learning from the experience will be beneficial for the continued develop-

78

ment of the program pipeline. “The Juniors were extremely motivated and focused. It was really a great experience for them. We qualified in the top sixth and on Saturday, they all came back and were very strong. It was great to watch,” said Kursinski. “They rode well, the horses jumped well, and the best thing is truly experiencing the team experience. At home it’s always individual, but to represent the United States internationally, you really feel it. There were 12 international teams and for them to be out there representing their country and feeling proud of their accomplishments reinforces the model that we’ve seen work for our program. For the future success, it’s about getting them started earlier and into this international environment.” The U.S. Young Rider Jumping Team returned on Saturday looking to improve on their performance from Wednesday. The team finished on a final score of nine, for sixth place in the CSIOY team competition, and saw Gochman ride to fault-free rounds across both team competition classes. Dejong and Heavenly Star finished on a total score of four, while Delbecq and Julesraimus de Barisy added a single rail and one time fault to their second-round total. Leahy and Coldplay 31 had three down for 12 faults and were the drop score for the team. Germany finished in first place on zero faults, with France taking second on four. Sweden earned the bronze with eight faults to round out the top three placings. “Overall, this team was great, and we just missed the podium by a time fault. It was a tremendous experience for all of them, especially to learn how to deal with their nerves – and there will continue to be learnings from it,” added Kursinski. “Across the board, they’re all taking home an understanding of what they must work on and continue to improve. It’s a wonderful experience and the competition was very strong, and that’s a part of why we invest in bringing future talent to these competitions and why it’s so important for them to experience the successes during the week too.” Gochman and Celina BH delivered all clear rounds throughout their week of competition and captured top honors in the Ashford Farm Grand Prix CSIOY in impressive fashion, crossing through the jump-off timers in 42.08 seconds for the win, nearly two seconds faster than the second-place finisher. Holtgers Jr. and Conblue, a 11-year-old Oldenburg Springpferd gelding, took second place in the Emmers Equestrian Park Grand Prix CSIOJ, with the pair finishing in 42.65 seconds, just narrowly behind Aurelia Guisson and No Limit vh Legita Hof Z of Belgium who took the win. Rizvi and Excellent, rounded out the top five in the class, adding four faults in their jump-off round and finishing with a time of 42.67 seconds.

TETON RIDGE DONATES $50K TO JCCF COLORADO – The Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund, a charity of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, has been gifted $50,000 from the Teton Ridge Foundation, the philanthropic wing of the newly created western brand, Teton Ridge.

Visionary entrepreneur, Thomas Tull formed Teton Ridge to preserve the traditions and values of America’s iconic western culture and heritage

by investing in western performance sports, athletes, events, branding and land conservation. The Justin Cowboy Crisis

Fund was established by the Justin Boot Company, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association in 1989 to provide financial assistance to athletes injured through their participation in professional rodeo activities. The donation from the Teton Ridge Foundation will assist the organization in relieving injured riders of financial stress from living expenses, physical therapy and more. “With no guaranteed salaries or injured reserve provisions in the sport of rodeo, professional athletes often feel financial hardship when they sustain serious, sidelining injuries,” said Tom Glause, Interim CEO and COO of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. “Teton Ridge Foundation’s contribution will help us continue to be a hand up for rodeo athletes and their families.” To date, more than $9 million has been awarded through the JCCF to more than 1,200 injured rodeo athletes and their families.

About the Teton Ridge Foundation The Teton Ridge Foundation serves as the philanthropic wing of the Teton Ridge Brand. The Foundation will provide invaluable funding for land stewardship, while helping foster community, working to preserve the American West’s cultural heritage, and serving as a champion of riding sports and the ranching way of life. $282,722 Season Winnings

STETSON WRIGHT

With an $8,860 payday at the Washington State Fair Pro Rodeo in Puyallup, Stetson Wright did more than add another all-around title to his resume. The Milford, Utah, cowboy made ProRodeo history by becoming the winningest

regular-season all-around money earner with $282,722 in saddle bronc riding and bull riding. ProRodeo legend Trevor Brazile held the record, earning $218,852 in the regular season all-around standings in 2015. Brazile’s money total

was initially reported to be $282,242, but that figure was incorrect because it included the money he earned at the 2015 National Finals Steer Roping. “I guess it’s going pretty good,” Wright said of his outstanding season. “I guess I never think about the money won, and never records too. I just think gold buckles. So, it’s pretty awesome to hear that.” Brazile, who won a PRCA record 26 world championships and earned more than $7 million in career earnings, is an inspiration to many cowboys on the rodeo trail, Wright included. “To have my name in the same sentence as Trevor Brazile is pretty awesome,” Wright said. “And to break a record that the 26-time world champion set is pretty special, too. “ At just 22 years old, Wright is already setting records and claiming NFR titles. In 2019, he became the first rookie to win the all-around world title. In 2020, he added gold buckles in the all-around competition and bull riding. Some of those accolades stand out more than others, and Wright said this is one of them. “This earnings record ranks up there, especially because Trevor Brazile held the record,” Wright said. One might think Wright’s fame and recognition would change his mindset, but he said he likes to stay in the present, always focusing on his next ride. “I don’t pay too much attention to anything I’ve done in the past or what I can do in the future,” Wright said. “I just focus on staying on my bull and horse every day. That’s all I can control, and I guess everything else will come if I do my job.” 1

“Dr Katz spent over a half hour on the phone with me. When is the last time anyone has heard of a doctor doing that. He is one cool dude.” - Steve N. “My wife, Debbie and I, work with Dr Steven Katz. He is the most compassionate and caring doctor I have ever had the privilege of working with. When I first called the practice to speak with someone about medical issues with our family, Dr Katz spent over a half hour on the phone with me. When is the last time anyone has heard of a doctor doing that. He is one cool dude. The entire staff and doctors at NPG are a cut above any other physicians I have come across. We really appreciate the quality of care they all provide.” - Steve N.

I have foot drop and HAD chronic backpain. I no longer medicate with drugs thanks to this practice of fine individuals. I am able to hike miles and miles and enjoy intense Mountain biking. Thank you, Dr. Steven Katz.” - Scott S.

“I had an extended recovery period after an emergency surgery and I was unable to ride. In April 2019 I went on a trail ride with my family and strained my hip flexor. In search of options, I started physical therapy which only brought limited relief. In Feb. I started prolotherapy and spinal manipulation with Dr. Cronin, and now am pain free and am back to riding! My husband has just started prolotherapy and chiropractic adjustments and is quite pleased after just one treatment! Our daughter is also receiving spinal manipulation from Dr. Cronin. We are so appreciative of what Dr. Cronin brings for health and pain relief as an alternative to traditional medical treatments!” Thank you, Melinda Carter

JB with Dale Brisby Mauney told ProRodeo.com that he suffered a lacerated kidney on Sept. 9 after a 90-point ride at the Tri-State Rodeo in Fort Madison, Iowa. He posted on social media he would be sidelined for six weeks. “I didn’t make a very good dismount and I ended up landing right in front of him,” said Mauney, 34. “He stepped on me right underneath my vest at my beltline, but I got up and walked out of the arena. I was fine until about 2 or 3 in the morning on Friday then decided I should probably get checked out. It ended up being a lacerated kidney.” As of 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, Mauney remained hospitalized in Iowa City, Iowa. Mauney is hoping to be released from the hospital by noon. He may be sidelined for a while but still has his sights set on returning if he qualifies for the Wrangler NFR, which will be Dec. 2-11 in Las Vegas. He is sixth in the world standings with $112,299.75. “With how my run has been going lately, I do believe I’m just going to try and get healthy for the NFR,” Mauney said. “That’s still a long way away, so we will see what happens.”

He took home $5,244 with the round win to put the finishing touches on yet another impressive Xtreme Bulls Tour season where he finished with $102,517. "These are some of our biggest events of the year, and most of the time if you do well in them, chances are you're doing well in the world, as well," said Kimzey, 27. "Winning the Xtreme Bulls Tour title is always something that I put in the forefront of my goals when I sit down for the year. They pay a lot of money and they're a ton of fun." Before tonight, the last time Kimzey had won a PRCA Xtreme Bulls Tour was 2019. That year he would go on to win his sixth world title. He says it's not a coincidence between leading the PRCA | RAM World Standings and winning the tour title. "If you come in and win a Division 1 Xtreme Bulls you know you're doing something right," Kimzey said. "There's still a lot of rodeo and there's work left to be done, but the sights are set on Las Vegas." Entering the final two weeks of the regular season Kimzey is firmly holding onto the No. 1 spot in the world standings, $62,191 ahead of No. 2 Stetson Wright, who this week became the youngest cowboy in PRCA history to earn $1 million in his career. Kimzey says from here on out it's about staying consistent and getting through the remainder of the year healthy. "Right now, it's kind of on cruise control, a lot of us are beat up right now," Kimzey said. "We are ready for a break. It's been a long season. But right now, it's who can block that out and go do their job day in and day out. We are out here grinding it out, stick it out and making a living."

Mapes received a specially designed plaque, and half-page advertisement in the magazine Art of the West, valued at $1,780, courtesy of Art of the West. Mapes discovered her love for

horses and the outdoors at a young age on visits to her grandparents’ ranch. Through high school and college, her passion for horses and the western way of life grew. Horses became the subjects that filled her sketchbooks, but until she visited Santa Fe, New Mexico, on her honeymoon, she didn’t consider her art as anything more than a hobby. With encouragement from her horse trainer husband, Mapes developed her ability to express, first in clay and later in paint, the things that touched her heart. For more than 30 years, Mapes has made her home in a rural ranch community, training her eye, honing her craft and working cattle. Today, her work travels from her studio in southeastern Colorado across the United States, while her work for the National Cutting Horse Association takes her sculpture around the world. America’s Horse in Art The American Quarter Horse Foundation hosted an online auction on August 14 for the 2021 America’s Horse in Art Show & Sale. Pieces are still available to purchase through October 16. To purchase a piece to add to your collection, visit www.aqha.com/artshow. All purchased art work will remain on display at the Museum through the end of the exhibit. For more information on the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum, visit www. aqha.com/museum.

New Plan to Rebuild BLM Announces plans to restore national headquarters to Washington, D.C.; Western headquarters will be expanded

WASHINGTON — Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland today outlined steps that the Department plans to take to rebuild and strengthen the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) following years of transition and upheaval among the workforce. These changes, which will be done in coordination with Congress, will improve the function of the bureau, help provide clarity for the BLM’s more than 7,000 employees across the country, maintain and increase access for stakeholders, and enable the bureau to better serve the American public and fulfill its mission as the steward of nearly one-

fifth of the nation’s public lands. In a meeting with BLM employees today, Secretary Haaland announced her intention to restore the BLM national headquarters to Washington, D.C., ensuring the bureau has a presence in the nation’s capital. Under this plan, the BLM’s current presence in Grand Junction, Colo., will grow and expand as the bureau’s official Western headquarters. This office will reinforce western perspectives in decision-making and have an important role to play in the bureau’s clean energy, outdoor recreation, conservation, and scientific missions, among other important work as a leadership center in the West. “The Bureau of Land Management is critical to the nation’s efforts to address the climate crisis, expand public access to our public lands, and preserve our nation’s shared outdoor heritage. It is imperative that the bureau have the appropriate structure and resources to serve the American public,” said Secretary Haaland. “There’s no doubt that the BLM should have a leadership presence in Washington, D.C. – like all the other land management agencies – to ensure that it has access to the policy-, budget-, and decisionmaking levers to best carry out its mission. In addition, the BLM’s robust presence in Colorado and across the West will continue to grow.” “The past several years have been incredibly disruptive to the organization, to our public servants, and to their families. As we move forward, my priority is to revitalize and rebuild the BLM so that it can meet the pressing challenges of our time, and to look out for our employees’ well-being,” added Secretary Haaland. “I look forward to continuing to work with Congress, Tribes, elected officials and the many stakeholders who care about the stewardship of our shared public lands and healthy communities." The Department intends to locate the Bureau Director and other key leadership positions in the national headquarters where they can ensure coordination with Congress, other federal agencies, and stakeholders that visit Washington, D.C. Additional senior personnel will operate from the Western headquarters, as part of the more than 95 percent of BLM employees that are already located outside of Washington, D.C. The Secretary’s vision for the BLM comes after substantive engagement with employees, Tribal consultations, and meetings with local, state, and federal leaders. The Secretary visited Grand Junction in July, and pledged to provide clarity and direction. Additional logistics and planning will occur in the months to come in close coordination with BLM employees, Congress, Tribes, and elected leaders. The Department plans to take a number of additional steps, in coordination with leaders in Congress, to ensure that the BLM is best positioned to serve the American public. This includes establishing a new BLM Foundation – as authorized in legislation – to support the bureau’s efforts and to help build new partnerships. The BLM will strengthen the government-to-government relationship with Indian Tribes by supporting Tribal Liaisons in each state.
